Coffee for a cause Photo from Stacey Wohl
Staff members of Cause Café gather outside the front entrance. The cafe opens this Saturday, May 7. BY VICTORIA ESPINOZA Morning routines for residents in Huntington are about to get a little sweeter. Fort Salonga’s Cause Café is the newest coffee shop working to bring jobs to young adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities. Stacey Wohl, founder and co-
owner of the café, has run the Our Coffee with a Cause coffee brand business with her two children, Brittney and Logan, since it was founded in 2012. Cause Café will sell its coffee, as well as breakfast foods, sandwiches and more. Brittney and Logan, who both have autism, were named co-owners of the business in November
2015, and will both be working at the coffee shop. The shop is a crucial resource for young adults with disabilities, the owner said. “I started talking to other parents and they had no job opportunities for their young adults with autism,” she said in an interview on Tuesday. Although programs are set up for internships to work with
nearby businesses, Wohl said they don’t translate into actual jobs. “They fall off the cliff at about 22 years of age,” she said. Aside from the kitchen staff and the counter manager, Wohl said every other employee at Cause Café is working with some form of a disability.

Starting this week, the second level of the south parking garage at the Huntington Long Island Rail Road station will be closed for the completion of a waterproofing project. According to the town, waterproofing is the last phase of the garage’s rehabilitation, which began last year. Waterproofing was completed on the upper levels before work was suspended due to the winter weather. A town statement said it is estimated
that the second level will be closed for about five weeks; after that, work will be done on the stair tower and handicap ramps, and then comes the detail work, which includes pavement markings on the third, fourth, and fifth levels. Parking should be available in the surface parking lot on the west side of New York Avenue at Railroad Street, according to the statement. — VICTORIA ESPINOZA

Two incumbents will compete with a former district director of world languages for seats on the board of education. Residents cast their votes on Tuesday, May 17, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. File photo at left, rest from candidates
From left, Bill Dwyer, Bari Fehrs, and Carmen kasper.
Three candidates fight for two seats in H’ton By Alex Petroski Two incumbents will square off against a former administrator in the race for two seats on the Huntington board of education. Bari Fehrs is running for her second term while Bill Dwyer is seeking his third victory. Carmen Kasper, who served as the district’s director of world languages for 14 years before retiring in June 2015, is challenging the pair.
Carmen Kasper
“The hardest thing about making that decision [to retire] was that I was not going to work with students any more,” Kasper said in an email. But by running for the board, “I could still work for them, serve them the best I could, and serve
them to the best of my knowledge by being a trustee, making decisions that would help to improve their education.” Kasper has lived in Huntington for 10 years. She has spent her life as an educator, teaching English in Peru and Spanish in Copiague school district. She earned a degree in education from SUNY Old Westbury and a master’s degree from Hofstra University in teaching English as a second language.
Bari Fehrs
Fehrs, a 27-year Huntington resident, was elected to the school board in 2013. She was on the board’s Safety Committee, Health and Wellness Committee, Shared Decision Making Committee and Policy Committee during her first term. Fehrs said she is proud of several accomplishments in her first term, like the
board restoring a full-day kindergarten program, which was previously cut, without piercing the state-mandated cap on tax levy increases; expanding academic and extracurricular programs; and enhancing technological infrastructure. “I look forward to the opportunity to serve another term as a school board trustee, to continue the excellence in education that the Huntington community has come to expect while being fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of this district,” she said in an email.
Bill Dwyer
Bill Dwyer was first elected in 2008. He left the board in 2011 after his first term, and was elected again in 2013. He served as president of the board for three school years. “I am proud of the work we have done in adding programs and services, all within
the realm of responsible budgeting,” Dwyer said in an email. “I have made positive contributions to the school district during my time on the board and would be honored to continue my service.” Dwyer has a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He started his own health publishing company called Rocket Science Publishing, which produces patient education materials to help in chronic disease management. He currently works for an educational technology company. Polls will be open on May 17 to vote on the district’s $123 million budget and select two board members. There is another item on the ballot: the release of $2.4 million from the district’s capital reserves for infrastructure upgrades related to handicap accessibility.

Cold Spring Harbor has three candidates for school board By Victoria Espinoza
photos from candidates
Lizabeth squicciarni, above, and amelia Walsh Brogan, below, are running for school board. George schwertl did not return messages seeking a photo.
Cold Spring Harbor has three competitors vying for two seats on the board of education, including one incumbent and two newcomers. Lloyd Harbor residents George Schwertl, a member of the Cold Spring Harbor Library board; and Lizabeth Squicciarni, a member of the Citizen Faculty Association, a parentteacher association at the CSH Junior/Senior High School, are going up against Vice President Amelia Walsh Brogan, who is seeking a third term.
Amelia Walsh Brogan
Brogan, current vice president, has served the board for the past six years as a trustee, president and vice president. She also serves on the Audit Committee, Policy Committee and Contract Committee. In a letter to the district, Brogan
said among her recent accomplishments was working to find a new superintendent. “I was active in the search and appointment of our new superintendent of schools,” she said. “My continued commitment to academic excellence, future innovations and desire to build on our successes were imperative in my decision-making process.” Brogan also said that during her tenure the board has maintained its AAA bond rating and adopted well-balanced budgets that were below the state-mandated tax levy increase cap that maintained student co-curricular and athletic programs and expanded some educational programs.
George Schwertl
Schwertl, who has four children currently enrolled in the district, said he is impressed and proud of the education they are receiving and knows
“how important education is to our families and the community,” in a letter to the district. Aside from serving on the library board, Schwertl is involved with the Ronald McDonald House, a nonprofit that raises money to improve the health and well-being of children. “I have a strong commitment to our community, having lived in Suffolk my entire life,” he said. “I am a strong advocate of our teachers and believe in the power of education, sports, music and extracurricular activities to prepare students for college and help make them the best they can be.” Schwertl also said he promises an open door policy if elected, and to be a strong voice for the community and children.
Lizabeth Squicciarni
Squicciarni, an eight-year Lloyd Harbor resident, has served as co-vice president and secretary
on the CFA board and is a member of both the Cold Spring Harbor Education Foundation and the Central Parents Council. She said she would like to carry on the success the district has already established. “Like many residents in our community, my husband and I decided to move to the Cold Spring Harbor school district because of its impressive reputation and consistent ranking among the top-rated districts in the country,” she said in a district letter. “We have not been disappointed … I would like the opportunity to keep moving our district forward.” Aside from district work, Squicciarni is a New York State certified emergency medical technician and volunteers with the Fair Harbor Fire Department on Fire Island. “I believe my background gives me the unique ability to see issues from all perspectives,” she said.
The vice president is up against two Lloyd Harbor residents in the race for two school board seats. Voters can cast their ballots on Tuesday, May 17, at the Cold Spring Harbor Junior/Senior High School.

Crushed Olive’s new tenant is a real people cheeser By Alex PeTroSki The Crushed Olive in Huntington has long been a destination for residents with an adventurous palate — now it is a haven for cheese lovers as well. Huntington’s Patrick Ambrosio, 59, opened Le Bon Fromage in April. Located inside specialty olive oil shop The Crushed Olive, Le Bon Fromage features local and international fresh, cut-to-order, artisan cheeses. Ambrosio is the resident professional cheesemonger, a title he has held for about 20 years. “I always wanted to do something like this here,” he said in an interview last week. “I’m excited to bring some good cheese to the Huntington community.” Ambrosio grew up in East Northport. By the time he was 30, he attended culinary school and spent time living in California, working as a chef at a winery and a cheesemonger at a restaurant. All the while, Ambrosio said opening a business like Le Bon Fromage was in the back of his mind. He decided to give it a shot for a number of reasons, most important of which was to be able to spend more time with his wife, Gale, and his 7-year-old son, Ethan. Ambrosio said he understands cheese, especially those with foreign names and unusual smells or textures that can be intimidating for eaters. He said his goal is to be approachable and informative.
cause café Continued from page A1 “I wanted a retail place where people saw the young adults with special needs and they were visible in the community,” Wohl said. “There are some companies who hire the disabled, but they are behind the scenes. [Here] they are right alongside with typical individuals in the community, doing some of the same jobs. They are involved in every aspect from the beginning.” The founder said she is hoping to inspire other businesses to hire the disabled, and also expand this store into a chain, to create as many job opportunities as possible. “I could open up 10 stores right now with the amount of people that want a job,” Wohl said. “I have parents calling me every day all the time, emailing, Facebook, calling. There are no jobs for kids with special needs.” According to Disability Statistics, in 2014,

Patrick Ambrosio stands with his cheeses inside The Crushed olive in Huntington. “That’s the fun part of cheese, you take people on a little journey with it,” the cheesemonger said. “I very much believe in the products I represent. I’ve been doing this for close to 20 years now. I live in Huntington and I kind of want to bring that to Huntington.” Ambrosio acknowledged apprehension
34.6 percent of Americans between the ages of 21-36 were employed. In New York, out of about 1.1 million residents with disabilities, only about 351,000 were employed. The United States Census Bureau said between 2008 and 2010, individuals with disabilities accounted for 9.4 million, or 6 percent, of the approximate 155.9 million employed citizens. In terms of what this coffee shop will offer to residents’ palettes, the choices are international and diverse. “I always wanted to go to France, so France came to me,” Wohl said of the theme of the shop and many of the items on the menu. She said the store is highlighting some products that “you can’t really find unless you go to Provence,” seeing as many items have been imported straight from that region in France. Andrew Popkin, sous-chef at Cause Café, said that the menu features all homemade items that are both healthy and delicious. Popkin said the menu will have weekly sea-
from shoppers who are becoming more and more concerned with what they are feeding their families. “There’s a whole growing market of people who don’t care if it’s a little bit more [money]; they want to know how it’s produced,” he said. “I do have some organic
cheeses but while most of them may not be organic, they’re produced to a standard that is better, almost.” That’s not to say Le Bon Fromage’s prices are hard to swallow. Ambrosio’s goal is to offer styles and flavors that are not necessarily the norm for the American consumer. His favorite, though he said it’s difficult to choose just one, is the French Comté Marcel Petite. “I’ve tried to put a good cross section of cheeses together,” Ambrosio said. Le Bon Fromage also offers various salamis from American producers. The response to Le Bon Fromage during its short run has been positive, if reviews on the shop’s Facebook page are to be believed. One shopper called it “an amazing gem in the heart of Huntington village.” Another complimented Ambrosio, saying, “You won’t find a more knowledgeable purveyor of cheese.” The cheese expert said he takes care to make sure customers enjoy every part of shopping at Le Bon Fromage. “I think a big part of it is you have to provide an interesting and good shopping experience for people, and that’s intangible. You don’t take [that] home and you don’t eat it, but that’s part of the experience too.” Le Bon Fromage and The Crushed Olive are located at 278 Main St. in Huntington.

DWI crash pins elderly man against front of McDonald’s By elana glowatz An elderly man had one fracture and a broken bone after being hit by a car in an alleged drunk driving incident Monday afternoon. According to police, the injured pedestrian, 89-year-old Dix Hills resident Louis Anania, was leaving a McDonald’s restaurant on West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington shortly after 4 p.m. when a westbound Toyota turned left toward the parking lot in front of an eastbound Chevrolet, causing a collision that sent the Chevy off the roadway and into Anania. The man was temporarily pinned between the car and the front of the building. The Suffolk County Police Department said Anania was treated at Huntington Hospital for a broken collarbone and an open leg fracture. An open fracture occurs when bone protrudes through a victim’s skin, or when a wound goes deep enough to expose bone. Police arrested 56-year-old Daryl Richardson, a female Huntington Station resident and the Toyota’s driver, for allegedly driving while intoxicated after she was treated for non-lifethreatening injuries at Huntington Hospital. Harborfields Walk for a Wish coordinators with students from Harborfields smile at the high school.
Tornadoes have been making wishes come true for 10 years For the 10th consecutive year, on April 16, Harborfields school district hosted its annual Walk for a Wish fundraising event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The well-attended event raised more than $22,000 to grant the wishes of 14-year-old Joseph, a child from Huntington Station who struggles with congenital heart defects, and two other Make-A-Wish children.
“Granting wishes to children at Make-AWish is an important event for the Harborfields community because we are encouraging children to be empathetic and supportive of other children,” said Walk for a Wish coordinator and Thomas J. Lahey teacher Diane Brown. “Our students are actively involved in this community service project, making it a meaningful experience.”
Leading up to the Walk for a Wish event, students held bake sales and garage sales to raise money for this annual charity. This year marked the most funds raised prior to the walk. Sponsored jointly by the Walk for a Wish Committee of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, the Acts of Kindness Committee at Washington Drive Primary School and the
schools’ PTAs, more than 900 students, faculty, community members and Harborfields athletes rallied together to walk the track at Harborfields High School. Throughout the past 10 years, the event has raised more than $150,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Harborfields community is responsible for granting the wishes of approximately 20 children.
Huntington preschoolers dive into first aid lessons Members of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad brought an ambulance and a first responder vehicle to the YMCA last Friday to give preschool children the opportunity to see Emergency Medical Services up close. The purpose of the visit was to explain to the children that an ambulance is nothing to be afraid of and that an ambulance coming to their home or school is to help someone who is sick or injured.
The children were allowed to go into the ambulance to see the equipment used to treat victims and to meet some of the members who respond to emergencies. It is important to teach young children that there is nothing to fear when an ambulance arrives. Children should be taught at an early age how to call 911 when help is needed. Many times a young child who has called for help has saved the life of a relative who suffered a medical emergency.
Submission is easy and publication is free.

Huntington falls short of win over Comsewogue Girls’ lacrosse team falls to 3-7 in Division II By Bill landon Despite four yellow cards that forced Comsewogue to play a team member down in the final minutes of the game, the Warriors were able to wind down the clock and hold on to a 9-8 win over the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team in a must-win Division II away game Monday to keep their playoff hopes alive. “We’re [5-6 in Division II], but our record doesn’t show how good we can play,” Comsewogue sophomore Hannah Dorney said. “We’ve had [six] one-goal games and we knew this game would be close.” Huntington (now 3-8 overall) broke the ice two minutes in when senior attack Emma DeGennaro found the cage unassisted, but Comsewogue’s Dorney dished the ball to junior midfielder Jamie Fischer on a cross, and she too buried her shot to tie the game minutes later. At the 12-minute mark, freshman attack Julia Fernandes scored next to put the Warriors ahead 2-1, but the advantage continued to change sides. The Blue Devils put away the next two goals, with junior midfielder Ryann Gaffney scoring first, and DeGennaro following with her second goal of the game, to put her team ahead 3-2. Seconds later, Dorney got the call and hit her mark to again even the score. With 18 seconds remaining in the first half, junior attack Julia Tuohy took matters into her own hands and darted from behind the net, firing a shot that put the Warriors out-front

First, senior attack and midfielder Katie Reilly served one up to sophomore midfielder Emma Greenhill, who drove her shot home; and Reilly, with her 4-3 heading into the halftime break. Tuohy said her team lost a tough game third assist of the afternoon, followed with two years ago to Huntington, a 15-1 loss, and a pass to Gaffney, who scored the goal that gave her team the lead again, 7-6. were thirsty for revenge. “Coming in I knew it was going to be an “The game was close — another one-goal game for us — but this time, we won,” she important game,” Gaffney said. “We stepped said of her team that has now been a part of up to the plate and I’m proud of how our team six one-goal games this season. “We were a played. Miller Place dominated over visiting ElwoodJohn Glenn amid pouring rain Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers outscored their opponent 9-1 after 25 minutes of play in Division II girls’ lacrosse action, and despite the Knights scoring six goals in the second half, Miller Place was able to extinguish the rally and put the game away 17-7 to improve to 8-3 in the league and secure a solid playoff position. The Panthers spread the scoring around in the first half, but senior Kristin Roberto led the way, as the midfielder and captain scored twice. Attacks Olivia Angelo, Julia Burns, Loren Librizzi and Allison Turturro each found the cage, as did midfielder Danielle Plunkett. The two other co-captains, junior midfielder Arianna Esposito and senior midfielder Alyssa Parrella, also split the pipes to dominate the game early. Senior captain Amelia Biancardi scored the lone goal of the first half for the Knights 12 minutes into the contest. To combat the deficit, Elwood-John Glenn head coach Janine Bright made a change in her team’s strategy for the second half. Bright said she knew Miller Place was a formidable opponent and that her team would have to fight from whistle to whistle for any chance of winning. “We have to play a full 25 minute half — not just show up for six minutes in the first half, seven minutes in the second half — we have to play the entire game with full intensity from start to finish,” Bright said. “If we did that, today’s score could’ve been very different.” Parrella opened the second half by lighting up the scoreboard with two quick goals — the first off an assist by Plunkett and then a solo shot for her hat trick goal, putting her team
out front 11-1. Miller Place head coach Thomas Carro said the leadership from his team’s captains is the reason for the team’s success this season. “I think we’re peaking at the right time, and the girls are firing on all cylinders right now,” Carro said. “Their positive attitude on and off the field is just contagious. The girls are starting to believe in themselves and as a result of that, they can play with anybody this season.” Biancardi, from a free position shot, scored again to make it a nine-point game with 16:03 left to play, but Parrella, unassisted, buried another one two minutes later to reopen the gap. Biancardi answered back at the 11:45 mark with a hat trick goal of her own, to bring the score to 12-3. “In previous years, we’ve played them closer, but they played amazing today,” Biancardi said. “They have so much speed on that team and you could see the difference.” After another Panthers goal, Biancardi struck again after circling the cage and slipping an underhand shot in for the score. On the Knights’ next possession, Biancardi fed the ball to Madisyn Hausch, who found the net as momentum began to shift. “[The Knights] have a couple of really good players who are not afraid to take it to cage,” Roberto said. “We had to step up and put pressure on them because they can score. We couldn’t take them lightly at all.” Victoria Tsangaris drove one home from the free position, followed by Hausch’s second goal a minute later, to shave the Panthers’ lead to 13-7, but the Panthers capped off the game by scoring four more goals. The loss drops John Glenn falls to 4-6. On winning the three remaining games to make the post season, Biancardi said, “We definitely have a chance in our next two games — we play Hampton Bays and East Hampton,” Biancardi said. “But then we finish with Comsewogue, and that one’s going to be tough. But if we play our best, who knows?”

Art Deco A vertically oriented design includes flat roofs and metal window casements. Neoclassical Neoclassical homes exist in incarnations from onestory cottages to multilevel manses. Bungalow A forerunner of the craftsman style, you'll find rustic exteriors and sheltered-feeling interiors. Prairie Originated by Frank Lloyd Wright, this style can be house boxy or lowslung. Cape Cod A true classic, Cape Cod homes have gabled roofs and unornamented fronts. Pueblo Flat roofs, straightedge window frames, and earth-colored walls typify Pueblos. Colonial An offshoot of the Cape Cod style, it features a rectangular design and secondfloor bedrooms.

Queen Anne Emerging in the Victorian era, the style features inventive floor plans and decorative chimneys. Contemporary Unmistakably modern, this style has odd-sized windows and little ornamentation. Ranch Ranch homes are set apart by pitched-roof construction, built-in garages, and picture windows. Craftsman Full- or partial-width porches are framed by tapered columns and overhanging eaves. Regency The style borrows the Georgian's classic lines, yet eschews ornamentation. Creole A front wall recedes to form a first-story porch and a second-story balcony. Saltbox Its sharply sloping gable roof resembles old-time boxes used for storing salt. Dutch Colonial German settlers originated this style, which features a broad, barn-like roof. Second Empire This Victorian style features mansard roofs with dormer windows. Federal This style arose amid a renewed interest in Greek and
Roman culture. Shed A subset of the Modern style, Shed houses are asymmetric with sloping roofs. French Provincial Balance and symmetry define the French Provincial style, which has a steep hip roof. Shingle An American style that echoes Queen Anne, it has unadorned doors and large porches. Georgian With paired chimneys and a decorative crown, this style was named after English royalty. Shotgun Tradition says that a shotgun blast can trace a straight path from the front to back door. Gothic Revival English romanticism influenced this style, marked by Gothic windows and vaulted roofs. Spanish Eclectic This style has details from Moorish, Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. Greek Revival Entryway columns and a front door surrounded by rectangular windows are characteristic. Split Level A Modern style, Split levels sequester living activities, such as sleeping and socializing.
International The International style exposes functional building elements, including elevator shafts. Stick Decorative horizontal, vertical, or diagonal boards are typical of this Victorian style. Italianate This style has symmetrical bay windows in front, small chimneys, and tall windows. Tudor Tudors have half-timbering on bay windows and upper floors, and steep cross gables. Monterey The Monterey style updates the New England Colonial style with an Adobe brick exterior. Victorian Built during the rise of the machine age, Victorian architecture incorporated decorative details such as patterned shingles. National Rooted in Native American dwellings, the National style is rectangular with sidegabled roofs. 7KH DERYH LQIRUPDWLRQ LV SURYLGHG E\ 7KH 1DWLRQDO $VVRFLDWLRQ RI 5HDOWRUV Š

A major will not decide the fate of your career
Editorial
Your turn BY RYAn DeVITo You are not defined by your college major. High school students often struggle under the pressure of not only choosing a college but also pre-selecting a major that will lead to a certain career. Fortunately, there is no definite pathway to most jobs. A college major is simply a medium for greater exploration of something. With few exceptions, college curricula are designed to expose students to a wide variety of coursework. The major itself can constitute as little as one quarter of a student’s credits over the course of their college career. Those credit hours are focused on one particular field of interest that may or may not have any bearing on a student’s future career goals. I majored in political science in college. Instead of viewing my college experience as a means for securing a job after graduation, I approached college as an opportunity to learn widely. Political science was, and still is, interesting to me, so I chose to focus my studies in that field. However, I never had any intention of pursuing any of the assumed paths of a political science major: law school, political campaigning or lobbying. Political science formed the foundation of my college education, but it in no way defines who I am or where I hope to take my career. My story isn’t uncommon, either. College graduates nationwide are increasingly departing from their college majors to pursue jobs that are sometimes com-

There is no college major that fits some yet-to-exist jobs, so students’ success is not bound by what they study. pletely unrelated. After all, the modern economy is constantly changing and the opportunity to discover new passions and interests is ever expanding. High school students may be surprised to learn how little bearing a college major has on a lifetime trajectory. Medical doctors are often examples of how your college major can be unrelated to your endgame. An increasing number of medical students have undergraduate degrees that are outside of the sciences, and many medical schools look for candidates with nonscience backgrounds. Why? Because medical schools want to produce wellrounded doctors who can better connect with their patients. This is an age when people need to be adaptable. Essentially gone are the days when you could graduate from college and assume that a lifetime job would be waiting for you. Instead, today’s college students need to be versatile and innovative. Not only is the job landscape constantly changing, but so are your personal interests. In a widely referenced statistic, the average young person today changes careers more than three times in their lifetime. That’s careers, not jobs. A college major should allow you to feed a passion. Selecting a
major based on career prospects is a losing proposition. And what really matters is not your major but your drive. The research of economists Stacy Dale and Alan Krueger suggests that college major is much less important than the student’s inherent ability, motivation and ambition. Studying art history or horticulture are not death sentences for your future. Just the opposite is true if you are motivated to search out the opportunities you want. Also, every experience can be translated into a desirable job skill. From interpersonal communication to organization to management, any major can be effectively pitched to be a desirable package for potential employers. High school and college students shouldn’t feel as though their future is at stake when they choose a major. Rather, they should think about how they can use their academic interests to reach their goals. There is no set path. With some inventiveness and innovation, today’s students can create opportunity regardless of what they study in college. Ryan DeVito is a Miller Place native and a graduate of SUNY Geneseo. Farm workers’ advocates are preparing to march 200 miles up to Albany in the name of better labor conditions, and we think lawmakers should listen. A group called the Rural Migrant Ministry organized the annual March for Farm Worker Justice, which sets off on May 15 this year, as part of its lobbying efforts for better working and living conditions, overtime pay and more for farm workers across the region. One member of that group described farm workers as “living in fear” of the “strongholds” farmers have on them, and the group has accused state Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) of failing to address their concerns since becoming majority leader. But an anonymous website, nyfarmworkerprotectionbill.com provided the farmers’ perspective. “RMM and others have recruited various celebrities and foodies to support the bill, as well as downstate and New York City legislators, most of whom have never even been to a farm,” the site said. “We believe these individuals have been misled and have not done the proper research to find out the truth about farms, growers, farmworkers and the challenges we face to bring fresh food to as many tables as possible.” We understand there are different angles to this debate, but we also firmly believe workers of any type, whether they are legally employed or paid off-the-books, should be allotted some basic rights that lawmakers must find ways to put in placew. We are calling on our elected officials to engage stakeholders in this debate and hold a public hearing in which all parties can contribute to the dialogue. There can be no mutual understanding without communication, and there appears to be a disconnect between farmers and their workers, or even between legislators and the agricultural sector. If everyone sits down together and has a respectful discussion, they may find fertile ground for compromise.

OPINION Reading between the sporting lines S ome conversations need a decoder. “I hate you,” in middle school often means, “Why don’t you pay more attention to me? I think you’re pretty awesome and I don’t know how to tell you that directly.” Or, how about: “What you did isn’t so great. I could have done that.” Translation: “Damn, I wish I had thought of that. Where’d you get that idea?” “Johnny is so much worse at this than I am.” Translation: “Johnny may or not be much By Daniel Dunaief may worse than I am, but I can’t possibly be the worst one at wrapping holiday presents. Please, tell me that I’m not at the bottom of the barrel in this activity.”
D. None of the above
Parents have their own way of communicating with each other and/or speaking about their children. Most of the things we say, either to our spouses, to their teachers or to other parents, are direct and straightforward. I’ve had some recent conversations in sporting matters where the subtext is so obvious that I thought I’d share my own decoder. Me: “So, how do you think the team looks this year?” Superdad: “Well, my son has spent much of the offseason preparing for this.” Translation: “I poured thousands of dollars into training. He better do well and you all better notice it quickly, if you want to protect my son and the trainers from my wrath.” Then there was a recent discussion about various volleyball skill sets among our daughters. I was speaking with the mother of a girl who is so much taller than my daughter that she’d have to bend down to eat peanuts off the top of my daughter’s head. This other girl plays the frontline almost exclusively.
Me: “So your daughter Clara looked great in the front today.” Superdad: “Yeah, but she’s the best one on the team in the back line. She just never gets there, but she’s scary good back there, too.” Translation: “I probably wasn’t that good at sports when I was younger and I want my daughter to define awesome on this team. In fact, this team would probably be better if we either cloned my daughter and had her play every position or if we took a few of your daughters off the floor for some of the game, until my daughter was able to give us a big enough lead.” Bragging about our kids is inevitable, and probably helpful as a way to assure ourselves that there is a payoff for all the work of getting them to and from practices, rehearsals and other activities. There are those parents who feign disappointment in their children. Faker: “Oh, man, did you see that she only got two outs when she could have had a triple play? Now, that would have been something special.”
Translation: “She made the most incredible catch anyone has made this year and she would have had a triple play if your daughter hadn’t been studying the butterfly over in the bushes. Next time, maybe the team will be ready for that kind of play and your child can play a supporting role in my child’s greatness.” And then there are the parents who work to limit any praise for their children, warding off the evil eye. Me: “Wow, your son made a sensational running catch in the end zone. Congratulations.” Superstitious parent: “Yeah, I guess it was OK, but the throw from the quarterback and the blocking by the other boys was even more impressive.” Translation: “He’s OK, but don’t call too much attention to him.” And then there are the put-it-in-perspective parents: Me: “That was a tough game, no?” PP: “I suppose, but they get to go home to a comfortable house with supportive parents.” Translation: “Win or lose, life is good.”
Invitation to a special Celebration Party And to properly celebrate our A anniversary, we are giving a ‘Thank midst all the frenetic news on the political scene, there is one constant and enduring spot in our world. It is the hometown newspaper, and I am enormously proud to be its publisher and, 40 years ago, the one with the idea to start the venture “with the highest ideals of a free press.” Along with nine other stockholders and a tiny, dedicated staff, we came out with the first edition on April 8, 1976, and as one longtime reader commented recently, “When we saw the paper, we knew it was Thursday.” Now, we may have missed our Thursday publication day a couple of times in the last four decades, but those instances were only due to Nature’s fury or a holiday scheduling change, and we have never missed a week. This rock-solid local instituBy Leah S. Dunaief tion owes its strength to a couple of factors. One is the unfailing commitment of our staff, some of whose names may have changed over the years but whose legendary loyalty continues. We get the news out to the public, with accuracy and fairness, to our utmost professional abilities. Included in that news, of course, are the ads that local businesses depend on for their customers’ response. Second is the willingness of our community to support our paper. When we first started, we were told more than once, “You don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell” of succeeding. Sometimes, to soften the blow, they added for the benefit of our largely

The readers and advertisers, over the years, have faithfully supported us, even as we have helped them to understand what was happening in the community that was relevant to their lives.
