Huntington passes smoking ban on athletic fields By Wenhao Ma It’s official: You can no longer smoke on any athletic field in the Town of Huntington. The town board unanimously passed legislation at an Aug. 16 meeting to prohibit smoking on athletic fields across Huntington. Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) originally brought up the resolution in June and was supported by Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport). “I am pleased that we have passed a common-sense measure to limit exposure to secondhand smoke at our athletic fields,” Cuthbertson said in an email. Smoking in town parks and beaches has been banned for years — but athletic fields have not been specifically addressed in town laws. The new legislation, according to Spencer’s office, is a response to residents who have expressed concerns about being exposed to secondhand smoke at sporting events. “Our youth, parents and coaches all deserve to breathe air free from secondhand smoke when visiting local sports fields,” Spencer said in an email. “This is critical to protecting the health of our residents and I applaud Councilman Cuthbertson and the rest of the town board for moving quickly to close this apparent loophole in the smoking policy.” According to the legislation, no person shall smoke a tobacco product, herbal product, marijuana, cigarette, electronic

cigarette, pipe, cigar, vapors, e-liquids or other legal marijuana derivatives in an outdoor playground or athletic field that is town-owned property. Spencer thanked Cuthbertson for drafting the new legislation, which he called “a bold step” in helping to reduce the rate of smoking among the youth and ensuring clean air for all who visit the town’s sports fields. “Everything counts,” Spencer said in a statement. “Even a child becoming conditioned to see cigarettes out in public or out at a ball field has an impact. [The legislation] is something that in the long term will save lives.” Daniel Stratton was one of the concerned residents, and he said he brought the proposed code amendment to Cuthbertson’s attention. “I noticed some of my children’s coaches leaving the dugout to smoke a cigarette just outside the fence of the field,” Stratton said in an email. “Aside from this being an obviously unhealthy behavior to model for the children, it seemed very counterintuitive when we are trying to get our children outside to be active and healthy.” Stratton, who is a former health teacher, said he started researching laws and regulations for smoking at athletic fields and that is how he got involved with Cuthbertson. “I discovered [there] was already a ban at Huntington beaches and playgrounds and I saw that this was spearheaded by Councilman Cuthbertson. So I contacted

“This new regulation extends my nosmoking legislation to include playgrounds, beaches and athletic fields,” Cuthbertson confirmed.

Gun control group targets North Shore congressman By Victoria espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com An anti-gun advocacy group put a North Shore lawmaker in its crosshairs over the weekend when members protested outside his office. Gays Against Guns — a nonprofit organization made up of lesbian, gay and transgender people and others who believe in a ban of high-capacity magazine guns and assault weapons, stricter background checks and online gun sales — held a protest in Smithtown over the weekend. The group said they chose to rally in front of the office of U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) because they believe he is a “puppet” for the NRA and hasn’t worked enough to create legislation that effectively limits the use of guns. Zeldin said protestors are not focusing on the real issue, which is preventing terrorists from getting firearms without limiting Americans’ constitutional rights. Duncan Osborne, a member of Gays Against Guns, said he believes Zeldin doesn’t have an interest in regulating firearms. He also criticized Zeldin’s Protect America Act of 2015. The bill would grant the attorney general authority to deny firearms and explosives to individuals who are engaged in terrorist activities or where there is a reasonable belief that an individual may use a firearm or explosive in connection with terrorism. “His piece of legislation is little more than a Band-Aid,” Osborne said in a phone interview. “He has made no serious effort

His bill was a joke to make Republicans look like they’re doing something on gun regulation when in fact it is nearly impossible to implement.” Zeldin said the issue is being influenced by politics. “It’s unfortunate that the Democratic Party and their most loyal supporters are politicizing this issue and [the] bill to keep

firearms and explosives out of the hands of terrorists,” he said in an email, according to spokesperson Jennifer DiSiena. When Zeldin first introduced the bill last year, he said the legislation would “help prevent terrorists from purchasing firearms or explosives, while putting in place safeguards to ensure that the rights of law abiding Americans are protected.”

According to Congress’ website, the bill was referred to the House Judiciary Committee in Dec. 2015, and then referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations in Jan. 2016. The bill currently has 14 Republican co-sponsors. Gays Against Guns also criticized Zeldin’s connections to the NRA, calling him a puppet for the organization, and the NRA his puppet master. “We don’t think he belongs in Congress,” Osborne said. “He has no interest in regulating firearms.” New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, another nonprofit organization that participated in the protest, agreed Zeldin should leave office. “They’ve got to go if we’re ever going to pass the kind of meaningful gun regulation,” Executive Director of NYAGV Leah Gunn Barrett said in a statement. DiSiena said Zeldin is fighting to support and protect his constituents. “His positions are not for sale to anyone,” DiSiena said in an email. “If these disrupters want to actually keep Americans safe, they would work with Congressman Zeldin as opposed to launching highly partisan protests against him. These groups should unite behind Congressman Zeldin’s efforts if their genuine intentions are to keep terrorists from being able to purchase firearms.” According to GovTrack, Zeldin was among the highest 10 percent of House Republicans joining bipartisan bills in 2015 and supporting progressive ideology.

Governor says he’ll sue over dumping in local waters By DonnA newMAn Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is threatening to sue. State lawmakers have joined forces across the aisle to issue a demand to both the federal government and the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the dumping of dredged sludge in the Long Island Sound at two existing sites. At Sunken Meadow State Park Aug. 4, New York office-holders from multiple levels of government presented a united front. Gov. Cuomo (D) warned U.S. President Barack Obama (D) and the EPA that a plan to create a third disposal site poses a “major” threat to the ecologically vital habitat and blocks progress to end openwater dumping in Long Island’s waters. He and Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) wrote letters to Obama, EPA Administrator Regina McCarthy and more. The dredging of Connecticut harbors and rivers, meant to deepen waterways to allow ships clear passage, produces sludge that is being open dumped in the Long Island Sound, according to Englebright’s office. Local environmentalists are also concerned with the practice being used long-term. “We are grateful for the strong support of Governor Cuomo and our local state legislators in opposing this ill-conceived plan

and putting the federal government on notice that the Long Island Sound is off limits for the dumping of dredge spoils,” George Hoffman of the Setauket Harbor Task Force, a North Shore group that works for clean water in Setauket and Port Jefferson harbors, said in a statement. Should the federal agency continue its plan to allow dumping of dredge spoils in eastern Long Island Sound, New York State will pursue legal action against the EPA, Cuomo said. In 2005, the EPA struck an accord with the governors of New York and Connecticut to reduce or limit the disposal of dredged material in the Sound by examining alternative placement practices. Two sites— Western Long Island Sound and Central Long Island Sound — were designated on Long Island to be used for that purpose. On April 27, the EPA proposed the designation of a dredged material disposal site in the Eastern region of Long Island Sound, a third dumping location that would continue open-water dumping of dredge waste in the Eastern Long Island Sound for as long as 30 years. The two sites open now are set to close Dec. 23. Englebright doesn’t see the latest proposal as a step in the right direction — according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, approximately 22.6 million cubic yards of dredging will be done over the next 30 years.

new york State lawmakers band together to stop Long Island Sound dumping. “Federal, state and local governments have spent billions of taxpayer dollars to clean up the Long Island Sound and significant progress has been made … continued dredge dumping will make the task of cleaning up the sound so much more difficult,” he said. The EPA has maintained that dredging is a necessary part of keeping the sound passable for ships. “Dredging is needed to ensure safe navigation in the sound,” EPA spokesman John Martin said in an email. “The EPA has not

made a final decision, but we believe the proposal strikes an appropriate balance between the need for dredging to maintain safe and efficient navigation and our desired outcome to restore and protect Long Island Sound.” He referred to the Sound as a nationally significant estuary that has seen the return of dolphins and humpback whales during the past year, thanks to cleanup efforts. New York State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) agreed that the state has made significant investments to repair decades of damage. “Real progress is being made, which makes the EPA’s recent proposal to expand the number of dredged material sites in the sound even more difficult to comprehend,” he said. “I fully support using whatever resources the state has at its disposal to fight the EPA’s plan and protect the long-term health of the sound.” Cuomo stressed his intentions to take action to protect Long Island’s waters if the EPA fails to comply with lawmakers’ requests. “If EPA ignores New York’s objections and finalizes its rule to permanently designate an open water disposal site in eastern Long Island Sound,” Cuomo said, “ I will take all necessary steps to challenge the rule and stop it from being implemented.” Victoria Espinoza, Desirée Keegan and Alex Petroski contributed reporting.

Blue Devils field hockey regroups for new season A new season will bring about a new look for the Huntington varsity field hockey team. Practice sessions commenced on Aug. 22., with head coach Kathy Wright continuing to lead Huntington this fall, and Allison Conlon moving up from the head coach of the junior varsity squad to assistant coach of the varsity team. After losing many of their top players to graduation last June, the team looks to returners to keep the program moving forward. The Blue Devils finished 7-7 in Suffolk Division II play last year and were 7-8 overall. Wright and Conlon have lots of work ahead as they go about assembling the 2016 team, with the hopes of improving upon those records. All-County stars Irina DeSimone and Emma DeGennaro, All-Conference standout Kelly Palladino and All-Division player Cara Sorrentino are all headed to college, along with fellow Class of 2016 teammates Meghan Plant, Sarah Fernandez, Kelsey Jamison, Victoria Martin and Jaclyn Schultz. DeSimone tallied three goals and five assists at her forward position. DeGennaro officially played defense, but she really covered the field from one end line to the other. The now-former Blue Devil had three goals and two assists. Palladino also played strong defense and she even managed to score a goal. Sorrentino starred at goalie, recording 103

saves. Plant was another bright light for the Blue Devils, notching a team-high eight goals as one of Huntington’s top forwards. Last year’s roster included 15 underclassmen, who are all eligible to return. The veterans are led by incoming senior Liz Berejka, who scored four goals and added four assists. Fellow incoming seniors Grace Curran and Jessica-Rose Greene are both standout offensive returners. Curran scored six goals, and Greene had three goals and an assist last fall. Incoming senior Michaela Carnesi had two goals and an assist last year, while incoming junior Lindsay McKenna also scored a goal. Alexa Cassar, another incoming senior, added an assist. Rising sophomore Morgan Minicozzi is expected to be one of Huntington’s mainstays on defense. Incoming senior Ashley Wright, along with Curran and McKenna should give the Blue Devils a formidable midfield line. Two of Huntington’s losses last fall were by one goal, and three others were by two. The Blue Devils’ offense scored 30 goals, with many coming from its powerful forward line. The varsity coaches will look to last year’s junior varsity team for some answers, and hopefully fill the shoes of the big players of las year. That junior varsity squad compiled a 14-1 record under Conlon, who moved into the varsity assistant position

for the current year when former assistant coach Marissa Bergmann decided to coach soccer at the middle school level. That Blue Devils team came within one goal of finishing unbeaten, and knowing her previous team so well, Conlon will be able to point Wright in the right direction to form a successful team for this upcoming season. Captained by Sarah Agrillo, Abby Fernandez and Sydney Van den Valentyn, Huntington’s 19-player junior varsity team shutout 10 opponents. The team’s lone loss came to Smithtown East, 1-0. Van den Valentyn finished with 12 goals and three assists, and Megan Byrnes tallied seven goals and seven assists. The two talents contributed to the team’s aboveaverage offense from the forward position. Anna Wickey tallied seven goals and six assists from her link position; Agrillo was a defensive star; Holly Wright was an exceptional link; and Phoebe Walther, Emily Stevens and Lianna DeChiaro also played key roles on the team. The Huntington varsity team will host scrimmages against Harborfields and Walt Whitman before embarking on a series of 14 games against Smithtown East, Copiague, North Babylon, Riverhead, Newfield, Eastport-South Manor and West Babylon. A nonleague crossover game will be played at Bay Shore. —Huntington AtHletics

Letter to the editor

A closer look at the US Constitution

File photo

A professor and student at Stony Brook University School of Medicine look at a medical scan.

A powerful partnership Two major power players in the field of medical help and research have come together to form a new partnership. Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Mount Sinai Health System, of New York City, have joined together to create more academic research opportunities to streamline and expand clinical care initiatives. While they are not the first school of medicine to connect with a health system on Long Island — Hofstra University’s School of Medicine works with Northwell Health — this certainly means new breakthroughs are on the horizon in Suffolk County. Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, senior vice president for Health Sciences at Stony Brook University said that each institution will be bringing its biggest strengths to the table, thus making each other stronger. Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine has strong biomedical, clinical research and health policy expertise, while Stony Brook University boasts programs with advanced mathematics, high-performance computing, and physical and chemical science departments. Combining math and science programs together will help students become well rounded, and open up the possibility for new programs. A press release said Stony Brook students will also be able to gain experience in areas of medicine that the university doesn’t currently offer, like observing and learning from heart transplants and other pilot programs. And students from either institution are now welcome to take classes at the other. But this liaison is going beyond students. Kaushansky said this partnership will improve patient care at both Stony Brook University Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital by allowing patients to easily seek services from either hospital. This is a great endeavor that should be encouraged and supported by the community. Not only does this teaming help students get a more in-depth education and give professors more opportunities for expanded lessons, it will in turn help the residents of the North Shore by improving the care that the local hospital can offer through the new discoveries and breakthroughs the new partnership will make.

We may never know whether Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump meant to incite violence against a duly elected U.S. president with his comment about the “Second Amendment people.” However, his statement during the same rally, where he warned the audience that if Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were to become president she would appoint liberal Supreme Court justices who would “gut” the Second Amendment and take “your guns away” again, shows that he has no idea how our government works. Hillary Clinton could appoint very liberal justices, and it would have no effect on the Second Amendment, or any amendment for that matter, for two reasons. First, any nominee to the Supreme Court must be approved by the Senate. I guess Mr. Trump must be assuming that the Democrats are going to win the Senate, and therefore approve any nominees Clinton nominates. That works for me. Second — and more importantly — he does not seem to know how the U.S. Constitution

File photo

is structured. I guess he still has not read it. Article V of the U. S. Constitution spells out how it can be amended: For an amendment to be proposed or repealed, it requires two-thirds of each of the federal legislative bodies — House and Senate — to vote in the affirmative. Once that has happened, it then requires two-thirds of the state legislatures of the 50 states to vote in the affirmative. Because any amendment can be blocked by a mere 13 states withholding approval, amendments do not come easily. In fact, only 27 amendments have been ratified since the Constitution became effective, and 10 of those occurred

almost immediately — as The Bill of Rights. The difficulty required to change an amendment ought to give us pause, for our Founding Fathers went out of their way to be sure the rights protected by the Constitution could not be easily stripped away. Whether our next president supports or does not support gun control, he or she must make sure that these rules are followed. But then, it does seem that Mr. Trump thinks and behaves as if he is running for emperor, not president. But some of us know better.

Ernestine Franco Sound Beach

The ‘empress’ Clinton has no clothes Like Khizr Kahn, Patricia Smith, the mother of Benghazi victim Sean Smith, spoke at one of the major-party conventions. “I blame Hillary Clinton for the death of my son,” she said. “In an email to her daughter shortly after the attack, Hillary Clinton blamed it on terrorism. But when I saw her at Sean’s coffin ceremony, she looked me squarely in the eye and told me a video was responsible. If Hillary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency?” I would encourage you to Google the essay of legendary columnist William Safire in the Jan. 8, 1996 edition of The New York Times in which he describes Clinton as a congenital liar. “She is in the longtime habit of lying; and she has never been called to account for lying herself or in suborning lying in her aides and friends.” Twenty years later, a tired, old leopard has not changed its spots. In November 2015, Clinton said “every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.” When asked if this included the many women accusing her husband of sexual assault, she smiled and said, “Everybody should be believed until they are disbe-

Patricia Smith speaks at the 2016 Republican National Convention. lieved based on evidence.” Upon hearing these remarks, Juanita Broaddrick shared her pain. “I was 35 years old when Bill Clinton, Arkansas attorney general, raped me and Hillary tried to silence me. I am now 73 and it never goes away.” Before voting in November, Google feminist Camille Paglia’s March 2015 interview on YouTube, where she described\s Clinton as “a complete fraud,” and “a woman that has enabled the debredations and exploitation of women.” She observed Clinton hitch her wagon to her husband after she failed the bar exam in Washington D.C., and said, “she’s had no real career other than riding on the coattails of her horn-dog husband.”

Clinton’s many lies regarding her personal email server are well documented. Anyone needing a refresher watch or read FBI Director James Comey’s responses to Congressman Trey Gowdy’s questions at the recent hearing. Comey confirmed Mrs. Clinton sent and received classified emails, used more than one device, did not turn over all work-related emails and her lawyers did not read the 30,000 messages they deleted on her behalf. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell felt the need to prevent her campaign from pinning her use of a private email server on him. He said: “The truth is, she was using her private server for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did as Secretary of State.” Although I respect that many people of good will support Clinton, Safire’s essay rings very true today. The empress has no clothes and this is not pleasant to look at. Perhaps that explains why Clinton has not held a press conference since Dec. 5, 2015.

It’s summertime and the boating is easy

OPINION Out of control and loving it

A

s we count down the days of summer on our hands and feet and we prepare for yet another tour around the academic merrygo-round, some of us are squeezing in leisure activities that become increasingly harder to do amidst trigonometry tests, English exams, soccer practices and musical rehearsals. Some summer revelers go to amusement parks, where their bodies travel in direcBy Daniel Dunaief tions that defy the typical linear motion from our beds to our cars to our offices. What is it about those moments when we fly around the corner of a roller coaster, or when we tilt back and forth in a machine that moves

D. None of the above

incredibly quickly that people fi nd so thrilling? Is it the feeling of our stomachs moving inside our bodies, the moment when we experience something completely new and more akin to that which another animal, like a bird, might feel — or is it something more basic? The answers depend on who you are and what you consider fun. I think, however, at the base of these wild rides is something we share in different degrees and circumstances. We enjoy the moment between when we exercise what we feel is the usual level of control over our lives, and that instant which balances between thrill and terror when we give up control. Yes, I know there are people who crave control to such a degree that almost all the decisions they make seem rooted in the power to influence each element or variable in their lives. To return to a scene from childhood, they are holding a crayon in their hand and carefully staying within the lines of life’s coloring book.

Maybe I wasn’t enough of an artist, or maybe I just enjoyed the entropy that comes from my universe which always seems to be moving toward a greater state of disorder, but those undirected marks outside the lines always seemed so liberating. The lines were the equivalent of someone instructing me to, “Do this, stay here, do that.” My squiggly and nonrepresentational lines were enshrined in my response: “No, thanks.” Recently, my son, brother and I went sailing in a strong wind. My brother, who captained the small boat, delighted at the sudden surge of speed as we flew across Port Jefferson Harbor. We were flying through the water at speeds that rivaled nearby motorboats, leaving behind a bubbly, foamy water trail. After several trips back and forth, the wind picked up enough strength that it submerged half of the boat. We heeled so far that my brother and son were heading toward the water. Still planted on the higher side of the boat, I reached

for my son’s life jacket and held on, trying to use our combined weight to keep us from capsizing. Seconds before we reached that tipping point, however, my brother let the sails out, dumping the wind and righting the ship just in time. While the outing was enjoyable up to that point, it reached a whole new level of excitement, especially for my son, who couldn’t wait to tell his cousins about how we started to tip. Naturally, their reaction was to put on their bathing suits, grab their life jackets and head for the boat. So, what is it about those outof-control moments that are so enjoyable, particularly in the retelling? Maybe, it’s just that — for the precise instant when gravity seems optional, when our routine experiences aren’t enough to allow us to predict the future with certainty the way we can with so many other things — anything is possible. And our minds, like our bodies, jump into the excitement of the unknown.
