Northport community leaders gathered at village hall last Friday to discuss joint efforts to fight the community’s ongoing battle with drug addiction and substance abuse.

Recovery, Awareness, and Prevention Week concluded on Oct. 30, after more than a week of events focused on teaching the Northport community the dangers of drugs and promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Darryl St. George, co-advisor of the school district’s Students Against Destructive Decisions and a teacher at Northport High School, spoke of the responsibility he feels to help the students he sees every day. He is also an Afghanistan combat veteran.

“Annually, we lose 43,000 people to drug overdoses,” St. George said. “That’s more than the combination we lose to firearms and car accidents.

I felt as a teacher working with young people, I was on the front lines again.”

St. George said that programs like Narcan training — training in administering

Narcan, a drug that thwarts opioid overdoses — and RAP Week are starting to make a big difference.

“It often feels as though we’re fighting a losing battle, but now we have more than 50 people who know how to save a life,” St. George said. “We took more than 40 pounds of drugs off the street with the drug take-back program. That is something really meaningful and positive. We’re going to continue the fight.”

Northport Village Police Chief Bill Ricca spoke about Northport Village Police Department’s involvement with the drug epidemic. He pointed to heroin as the main drug the community is having a problem with.

“It’s cheap, and the stigma of using needles is really gone, because people can ingest this or snort it,” Ricca said.

Since 2009, there has been a 97 percent increase in drug offenses in the village, an 88 percent increase in marijuana usages and a 76 percent increase in people driving while ability impaired, according to Ricca.

He said in the past three years, the department has become more proactive at combating the drug problem in three specific ways.

The first is taking a more active role in the village by not only focusing on arresting individuals using drugs, but also those selling drugs. The department has joined forces with outside agencies such as the Suffolk County Police Department. This helps Northport Village share resources and intelligence.

And finally, the local police force has partnered with civic

and school groups, such as Students Against Destructive Decisions, with the hopes of educating students and parents about the dangers of drugs.

Ricca said since the department started this three-pronged attack, marijuana offenses have flattened and drug offenses have slowed by a third.

“We are facing a nationwide epidemic,” said Dr. Scott Coyne, chief surgeon and medical director of the Suffolk County Police Department.

Coyne said the department has been actively involved in the

drug take-back program, as well as Narcan training sessions. He said county police have saved almost 400 people using Narcan in the last three years.

Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) said these types of programs are important for the youth of the community.

“It’s more than education and awareness,” Spencer said. “It’s about impacting young people on their level and giving a message about what’s important to them, and that’s why these programs are so successful.”

LaunchPad to shoot for innovative jobs Merging of educators, tech companies and students

LaunchPad Huntington is sponsoring a conversation between technology companies, educators and students in the hopes that it will spark creative collaborations and future Long Island-based jobs.

The conference will be both a showcase of emerging technologies and services and an in-depth panel discussion with education and industry leaders working to prepare students and adults for new employment opportunities.

The event, dubbed a STEAM Innovation Conference will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at LaunchPad’s Huntington office from 3:30 to 8 p.m.

Phil Rugile, director of LaunchPad Huntington, said the conference is meant to combine science and the arts, to “merge two different parts of the brain.”

“My hope is to get a conversation started in media, education and business communities,” he said. “We need people to start thinking outside the box.”

The event starts with a 90-minute opening for public school students to browse exhibits set up by technology companies. A solar energy company and a virtual reality company are some of the businesses that will showcase exhibits at the conference.

Originally this conference was designed to target professors and their curricula to produce more innovative thinkers.

Following the exhibits, there will be a networking hour, complete with dinner and music, where businesses and educators are encouraged to bounce ideas off each other.

The final part of the conference is a discussion by a panel of experts.

Kenneth White, manager of Office of Educational Programs at Brookhaven National Laboratory, will moderate the talk. Panelists will include Victoria Hong, associate chairperson and assistant professor for the St. Joseph’s College Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Andrew Grefig, director of curriculum and content at Teq and Nancy Richner, museum education director at the Hofstra University Museum.

“We’re constantly losing kids to Brooklyn and New York City,” Rugile said. “Let’s change the conversation. We need to provide opportunities.”

The sweet taste of success

Three East Northport sisters held their 11th annual Halloween bake sale fundraiser to benefit the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry in Northport — breaking their donation record by a thousand dollars.

Sisters Dylan, Zoe and Kyra Perles have been running the bake sale together for more than a decade, with the help of their parents, friends

and neighbors. This year they raised $2,300, topping last year’s $1,285.

The girls and their friends take weeks to prepare for the event, hanging flyers throughout the community and putting signs in neighbors’ mailboxes.

But the few nights before the fundraiser is when everything really comes together.

“We had more than 30 people in the house last night making cupcakes until 2 a.m.” Zoe said.

The sisters said they were looking up new ideas for cupcake designs throughout the night.

The first year this event began it was just the three of them and a few of their family friends. But the fundraiser has grown in volunteers each year.

“My friends ask me when we are going to start getting ready every year,” Zoe said. “They get so excited to help out.”

The girls said they see at least 100 people at the bake sale

every year, and as the day goes on it becomes impossible to park on their street because it’s quickly populated by people coming to the sale.

Kyra said her favorite part of the day is watching the moneybox fill up.

“I really like helping people,” she said. “It feels nice not to just do things for yourself.”

Dylan echoed the sentiment.

“My favorite part is when we bring the money to the Northport food pantry,” she said. “We go and everyone gets so excited, and then we help them package all the food.”

Aside from baked goods — which include frosted sugar cookies, pumpkin bread, blueberry muffins, pumpkin Rice Krispies treats and more — there is also a make your own cupcake station and a popcorn machine.

Local businesses also donate to the bake sale, including Copenhagen Bakery, Stop & Shop and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The girls originally wanted to have a lemonade stand 11 years ago to raise money for the food pantry, but their mom convinced them to have a Halloween bake sale instead.

On Friday morning, store officials marked the grand opening of the grocery’s newest Huntington location — on Wall Street where Waldbaums once was.

Employees were all smiles as Fred Myers, the store’s manager, cut a ceremonial ribbon to celebrate the business’s opening.

He thanked the staff for helping prepare the store for its first day.

To foster a love of reading, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, in the Harborfields Central School District, invited parents to share in some quality reading time with their child during the school’s annual

Read-In event on Oct. 23.

In the allotted half hour, parents and students scattered around the TJL campus and selected a comfortable location to read together. Parents brought along some of their child’s favor-

ite storybooks and a blanket to sit on while they enjoyed the fall weather outside or chose to read indoors. In groups, students and parents took turns reading aloud and showcasing the colorful illustrations in the book.

Florence Marie Pufahl, of Huntington and Shelter Island, formerly of Locust Valley, died peacefully on Oct. 23 at the Mary Ann Tully Hospice Care Inn. She was 93.

Born on Jan. 17, 1922, in Queens Village, the second of Anna and James Green’s four daughters, she is remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her extensive family. She was a friend and confidante to countless people she touched in her storied life, especially her late husband Joseph.

Florence was predeceased by her husband Joe in 2011, and daughter Kathy in 2003.

She is survived by her three sons: John (Cheryl) of Lloyd Harbor, Joseph (Sandra) of Cutchogue and Robert (Helen) of Huntington Bay; grandchildren Christopher Pufahl, Lauren (Devin) Kinney, Jessica (Don) Jones, Kristen (Brad) Schreck, Daniel (Lauren) Pufahl, Kevin (Jayne) Cande, Tyler Cande, Torie Cande, Kyle Lehman and Colleen Lehman; and

Following a funeral mass at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Huntington, she was buried alongside her husband and daughter in Our Lady of the Isle Cemetery on Shelter Island.

He vowed that he would work hard for the voters.

“To the people of Suffolk County: I want to thank you for the confidence you placed in me and this incredible team of legislators. I can guarantee you we will repay that confidence by working hard every single day to make progress on the issues that matter to you and to your families. We may celebrate a little bit tonight, but that work begins tomorrow.”

Though Bellone was the clear winner early on, O’Connor said he was proud of his campaign.

“I think we talked about the issues that need to be talked about here on Long Island,” he said.

Despite the results, the challenger enjoyed himself: “I love this. … In America we run for office, we put our ideas forward and we let the people decide.”

In the Suffolk County Legislature, incumbents from Huntington towns won re-election, In the 13th District, Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) beat Kings Park Democrat Rich Macellaro, with more than 70 percent of the total.

In Huntington, Legislator Steve Stern (D-Dix Hills) won his final term in the 16th District against Republican attorney Tom McNally, with 60 percent of the vote.

“We understand what’s on the minds of our constituents, we listen to our constituents and we deliver for our constituents,” Stern said.

Also, Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) took the 18th District against his challenger from the right, Grant Lally, after garnering 56 percent of the votes.

“It’s exhilarating,” a joyous Spencer said. “It really is. After two years of hard work and six-month campaign, to really have the people recognize I’m giving my heart and soul to try to support us means a lot to me.”

Town board incumbents Gene Cook (I) and Susan Berland (D) were returned to the board after a four-way race with 27 percent and 24 percent of the vote, respectively.

Democratic challenger Keith Barrett and Republican challenger Jennifer Thompson just fell short, each garnering about 22 percent of the vote.

“I can’t wait until tomorrow,” Cook said Tuesday night.

“I felt good throughout today because I’m always honest and I think I’ve shown that in the last four years.”

Berland said she was “proud and humbled” to be re-elected.

“I just want to keep doing good things for the people of the town and making the town the best place it can possibly be,” she said.

Despite coming in third, Barrett was happy with the effort he put into his campaign.

“I gave it my all,” Barrett said. “I am proud of what my team accomplished. We ran a very clean race.”

Barrett also said he would consider running again in two years, since he came up only several hundred votes short of Berland.

“I would think about it,” Barrett said. “You never know.

It was quite an experience, a lot of fun and very exciting.”

Thompson took to Facebook to share a statement on her loss.

“It wasn’t my time but I am grateful for every single day that has been part of this experience and every single one of you who helped me along the way,” Thompson said. She also congratulated her running mate Cook and said he will continue to serve this community well.

There are lessons on Election Day

Our government was designed to have some give-and-take. We have a mostly two-party system and two houses of Congress because the parties and the houses ideally check each other.

The House ensures proportional representation based upon population while the Senate, with each state getting two votes, makes sure the little guy can be heard even in a room of big guys. And the Republicans and the Democrats, in a well-balanced Congress, keep each other on their toes.

That’s why the spread between Republicans and Democrats in our North Shore legislative bodies makes us uncomfortable.

In Suffolk County, we have a large majority of Democrats in the Legislature, and the same imbalance exists on the Huntington Town Board. In Brookhaven and Smithtown towns, the Republicans have the overwhelming majority.

That disproportion will be worse come January, when Councilwoman Valerie Cartright will be the only Democrat on the seven-member Brookhaven Town Board. Her lone colleague on the left, Councilwoman Connie Kepert, was ousted by a Republican on Election Day.

One of the reasons our newspaper endorsed Cartright was our desire to preserve the Democratic minority on the board. This wasn’t because we particularly dislike any of the Republican board members or think they are irresponsible, but our government was designed to have shared control, to bring multiple viewpoints. Differ-

ing opinions foster compromise and prevent leaders from having absolute power to enact whatever laws they wish. A minority party is a watchdog.

Similarly, we endorsed Councilman Gene Cook for re-election in Huntington in part because he is the only nonDemocratic member, and in that role he keeps the others in check. He will

remain in such a position next year.

We hope our majority party leaders, from the Suffolk County Legislature to the town boards, keep in mind that even though they may not agree with minority colleagues, those people serve an important purpose — and we hope they will do their best to reach across the aisle, even though they don’t really have to.

From Red Planet suspense to Cold War chill

ovember movies are a reminder of what the medium of film can be.

My wife and I recently saw “The Martian” and “Bridge of Spies.”

These two new films offer viewers a chance to think, instead of just reacting to exploding robots or people with sudden super powers.

“The Martian,” starring Matt Damon, is about how astronaut Mark Watney, who is stuck on Mars, tries to communicate with people worlds away and to survive until a rescue mission can return for him. Oh, come on, people if you’ve seen even one preview, you know that much. Anyway, Damon doesn’t spend the entire movie flexing his muscles, shooting guns and running away from would-be assassins — he reserves those actions for the series of Bourne films. He figures out how to use the limited resources on Mars to survive. While it’s difficult to blend the possibilities of real science with an explanation of what he’s doing to an audience that might not follow everything, the film does an excellent job keeping up the suspense while giving us a Martian MacGyver.

Damon’s portrayal, and the reaction of his body to an extended stay alone on Mars, is compelling.

At one point, he describes how he

has to ration his food, going from eating three meals a day to eating one meal every three days. By flipping back and forth from Earth to an Ares capsule to Mars, the movie keeps the action, suspense and drama going without turning the movie into a one-man show.

The scenes with the staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory were especially satisfying, offering a look at some of the ways the hardworking analysts, engineers and scientists on Earth make it possible for humans — and satellites — to perform extraordinary tasks.

The scene shifts from the work Watney is doing on Mars to the tireless efforts of the JPL staff make it clear how much science like this is a team effort. As an aside, several scientists on Long Island have worked at a range of NASA facilities, developing technology for use on Mars rovers or working to understand the effects of extended exposure to radiation on the human body.

Meanwhile back in the late 1950s in “Bridge of Spies,” Brooklyn lawyer Jim Donovan, played

by Tom Hanks, is assigned the unenviable task of defending Russian spy Rudolf Abel. The film captures the clash of duty to our country that surged through the ranks of attorneys, police officers and judges, with a duty to our Constitution which had — and often still has — a much more challenging set of rules to follow.

Donovan takes risks by defending Abel. The movie doesn’t address what secrets Abel might have been revealing, and it doesn’t need to. What it does offer, however, is a compassionate look at a soldier in a war for information during a period of heightened tension between two countries capable of destroying the world.

portrayal of Abel as a prisoner of war is captivating. The audience can see how Donovan might have made the transition from doing his duty and ensuring a legal defense for this spy to feeling a greater responsibility for a man who was a devoted soldier, albeit in a war against his own country.

The characters, performances and situations in “The Martian” and “Bridge of Spies” stay with the viewers well after walking out of the theaters. Too bad Oscar voting season doesn’t come more often in a year.

Horror has its continued fascination

here is a fascination with stories about the Holocaust.

Maybe it has to do with trying to understand pure evil.

Maybe it is an exploration of the depths of man’s inhumanity toward man. Maybe it’s a terror that could happen again, to anyone who is somehow chosen to be a victim, and that could be any one of us. And just when one thinks, “Enough, I don’t have to read or see any more of these stories,” another one comes along, bringing its own compelling detail — and

the fascination continues.

Elsewhere in this newspaper, in the Arts & Lifestyles section, there is an article about a film, recently shown at Suffolk County Community College, telling the story of a different Holocaust survivor. I’m writing today about Thomas Blatt, who died this past Tuesday at the age of 88, and who was one of those escapees from the Sobibor extermination camp after a massive revolt by the prisoners.

I had never heard of this particular death camp, nor of an uprising there, and so I read his obit with interest.

Blatt was 15 and his brother just 10 when they were taken from their largely Jewish village in the Lublin district of Poland, along with their parents and neighbors, and put into a ghetto by the Nazis in 1942. From there, they were deported to Sobibor, where Blatt’s family was gassed immediately after arrival. For some reason, Thomas, who was fair and blue-eyed, was pulled out of line by one of the guards and given odd jobs to do, thus being spared his fam-

ily’s fate. His jobs included fixing fences, burning documents, cutting the hair of women before they were herded into the gas chambers and sorting the victims’ belongings.

“I recognized my mother’s clothes and I realized my parents were no longer alive,” Blatt said.

Six months after he arrived, there was an uprising and mass escape from the camp, with some 300 prisoners running for their lives. Only some 60 managed to survive the war, including Blatt; the other escapees were hunted down and executed by the Nazis.

There had been about 150 Ukrainian guards and 15 German SS officers at the camp, and many of them were killed in the escape.

The site was knocked down and bulldozed by the Germans, who were trying to hide the death camp and the event. Blatt hid for almost a year until the advancing Russian troops pushed back the German army from Poland, despite having been shot in the jaw by a Polish farmer during the escape.

Blatt eventually emigrated to Israel in 1958 and the United States a year later, ultimately

settling in Santa Barbara, Calif., where he lived with his family and owned three electronics stores. Years after he had arrived in America, he was asked to testify at the trial of alleged camp guard, John Demjanjuk, a retired autoworker who had been living in Ohio. Blatt wasn’t able to identify the accused, but he became a prominent witness for the prosecution with his many details about the brutality unleashed on the prisoners by all the Ukrainian guards.

Demjanjuk was found guilty but died before his appeal could be heard.

“I never escaped from Sobibor,” Blatt said. “I’m still there — in my dreams and in everything. My point of reference is always Sobibor.” Described as “quiet and modest,” by a longtime friend, “Blatt suffered from recurrent nightmares and depression, and said, “Witnessing genocide is overwhelming; writing about it is soul shattering.” But according to his friend, he never harbored malice toward the Germans, the Ukrainians or those Poles

who were anti-Semitic in his lifetime. He urged others to do the same. He worked tirelessly, traveling back and forth to Poland, to preserve the site of one of the few uprisings by Jewish inmates against Nazi guards during World War II. Blatt was haunted by regret all his life for the last words he said to his mother just before they were separated at the death camp. “And you didn’t let me drink all the milk yesterday. You wanted to save some for today.” He fervently wished he could have instead hugged her and told her how much he loved her. Blatt, who wrote two books on the horrors of Sobibor, is survived by his three children, six grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Tornadoes take it to finals Boys’ soccer

The Harborfields boy’s soccer team is moving on to the Suffolk County Class A finals after the No. 2-seeded Tornadoes defeated No. 3 Islip in the semifinals on Tuesday, 2-1.

Almost 20 minutes into the first half, midfielder Brian Root scored on a header off a direct free kick taken by midfielder Ben Barnes.

In the second half, Islip scored the equalizer with a goal from Connor Sharpe.

With three minutes left in regulation, midfielder Owen Lamerson scored with a cross into the top right corner, after receiving a cross pass at the 20-yard line.

Harborfields head coach Daniel Greening said this win was a total team effort.

“The boys played well and won the 50/50 balls, which really determined the

course of the game,” Greening said in an email. “I think that was the difference between yesterday and when we played them last. This time, we challenged them and didn’t let them get as many chances to turn on us and go to goal. The boys adjusted really well and it was a pleasure to watch.”

Most of Harborfields’ student body came out to support the boys — packing the stands.

“I really think we beat Islip this time because of the pack of over 150 fans shouting and supporting us,” Lamerson said.

The team had a two-week break between winning the League V title and its first playoff game, and Root said it made the team a bit nervous going in, “but we knew what we had to do,” he said.

Root added that a pregame speech given by goalkeeper Will Merhige hyped the team up.

The last time Harborfields played Islip, the Tornadoes came up very short, losing by four goals.

“We played the ball to feet and we were calm and smart on the ball,” midfielder Gerard Espinoza, said.

Espinoza also said his team played to its opponent’s weaknesses.

“We knew they were quick, so we passed with two to three touches max, and capitalized on their weaknesses, which were free kicks and corner kicks,” he said.

Root echoed the sentiment that the Tornadoes played much quicker this time around.

“We benefited from our fans,” Root

said. “The fact that it was the last home game for the seniors made the game a lot more emotional. This game really demonstrated that we have what it takes to move further.”

Lamerson said he feels confident going forward.

“This team will accept nothing but a state title,” he said.

The Tornadoes will host No. 5 Amityville today at Dowling College at 4 p.m.
