The students eagerly waited to cut their hair for a worthy cause while the room buzzed with music, pizza, smoothies, an auction and the countless surprised faces of the brave people who lost inches of hair to raise money and awareness for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

“Hey, free haircut!” one student joked.

According to St. Baldrick’s official website, the event, which took place on March 6, raised $75,304.50 by the end. During the event, students played all kinds of volunteering roles to join the fight against cancer.

“It’s a great cause,” said David Malinovsky, an 11th-grade Commack High School student who had his head shaved.

“It’s one of the most special things that we can do besides giving money.”

Even some of the female students hopped into the chairs to get their hair cut significantly shorter. Some female students even decided to have their entire head shaved for the cause.

“My uncle recently died of cancer,” said Carrie Fishbane, a 12th-grade student who had her entire head shaved.

“I’m doing this in memory of him.”

Others decided not to lose their precious locks but to still help out in other ways.

“I think it’d be fair for a change if everyone else had no hair,” says Kyle Critelli, a 10th-grade student.

Critelli volunteered to sweep hair from the gymnasium floor. Other students got involved by selling food, drinks and merchandise that would all benefit the students.

Even nonstudents from the community got involved in the effort. Tara Forrest, a professional hairdresser with 17 years of experience, has been volunteering to cut hair for St. Baldrick events for three years.

“My whole family does it,” Forrest said with excitement, Forrest said she was first inspired to donate her time and effort after one of her young son’s classmates was diagnosed with kidney cancer. She told her son Michael that his classmate’s remission is credited to “people like us that raise money.”

With that inspiration, Michael, who is now in second grade, has helped to raise roughly $10,000 through St. Baldrick’s within three years.

But the Forrest family was not the only one to let a personal situation inspire them to participate in charity work.

Lee Tunick, a math teacher from Commack High School, became the advisor for Yodel Kadodel, an extracurricular club at the school that raises awareness and money for cancer research with various activities throughout the year.

The club has been running a St. Baldrick event for the past six years. Since then, roughly $450,000 has been raised.

“I have a friend whose daughter is sick,” said Tunick. “You feel so helpless from one parent to another. You want to do something to help if you can.”

Kings Park advocates converge for anti-drug forum

A grassroots advocacy group from Kings Park continued its quest to keep kids away from drugs last week with an informative forum flanked by a starstudded list of guest speakers.

Students attending William T. Rogers Middle School in Kings Park joined their parents at the school gym Wednesday night, March 4, in welcoming the speakers who assembled for the annual preventing destructive decisions forum.

Hosted by Kings Park In the kNOw (KPITK), a grassroots drug outreach and prevention organization, the forum served as an opportunity for parents and their children to become better educated on the perils of alcohol and drug addiction.

Opening the event, a member of the school faculty addressed parents and students who sat opposite a large stage and offered words of encouragement for the young members of the audience.

“Hopefully we can impress upon you tonight how much we love you and how much your families love you and the importance of the actions that you take at this level while you’re here with us at the middle school,” said the one faculty member, before introducing the night’s speakers.

The first speaker at the podium was Kim Revere, a volunteer for KPITK

since 2007 and a mother of four. She described getting involved with the organization because of the growing drug problem gripping our communities and the difficulties she faced at home with her 27-year-old son, who at the time was struggling with heroin addiction.

“What Kings Park In the kNOw does is we try to bring educational programs into the schools and into the community to keep parents educated and educate kids as to what the trends are and try to have kids make positive decisions in their lives,” Revere said. “This town is growing and kids are dying. My son has been to rehab nine times; he is finally on the right track. He’s 27 years old and I will not trust him until the day I die. No matter how good he does. I don’t want another parent to live with that pain,” she added.

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) was also in attendance and drew from his 25-year background in law enforcement to discuss the lasting impact that narcotics have on local communities.

“I used to say you put the police radio on the counter and when it went off 90 percent of those calls coming out of there are drug or alcohol related,” Trotta said. “Whether it be domestic abuse, a car accident, a robbery or a theft, people break into houses to get stuff to sell to

get drugs. They’re not going to be paying their mortgage with it.”

Trotta also delivered an overview of Suffolk County’s Social Host Law and New York State’s 911 Good Samaritan Law passed in 2011, which according to the legislator is a “great law” that states that if you are in a situation involving illicit substances and someone with you is in immediate danger that you should “call 911, and you will not be arrested” through implication.

Rounding out the forum were presentations from Thomas’ Hope founder and drug prevention advocate Linda Ventura, and Kym Laube, executive director of Human Understanding and Growth Services.

Ventura lost her son Thomas to drug addiction in March 2012, when he died from a heroin overdose. Since then she’s been making routine trips to Albany to push for change in the area of addiction treatment services and to better define how we should combat drug use in New York State. On the one-year anniversary of her son’s death, she launched Thomas’ Hope, a nonprofit foundation that promotes drug awareness, prevention and advocacy.

use grows in popularity throughout Long Island and across the country.

Through the HUGS program she actively seeks to promote social growth among children and adolescents through leadership programs and retreats and allow them to bond and have fun in the absence of drugs and alcohol.

“All of our activities are meant to have kids feel like they are a part of something and a part of something bigger,” Laube said. “So, that we become just as fun of an activity as maybe some of the other high risk choices that are out there.”

Taking time to address the night’s event, Laube reminded parents and students that while beneficial, the real challenge presented to prevention experts and lecturers who engage with an audience is the impact of their messaging over the long term. In order for lasting change to occur, a large community effort is important and necessary, according to Laube.

“We know that unless we begin to have consistent messaging all throughout, that it’s just one night of information,” said Laube. “So what we encourage communities to do is to really begin to bring about that community-level change and to have events regularly and often, and have parenting sessions and get better programs in schools for kids so it moves beyond just this one-shot event.”

However, the district did have a wish list of items it would like to pursue if it happens to get a state aid windfall once the runs are received.

An important thing on that list is the addition of a social worker, as the district currently has only one. It would also like to add elementary librarians to three schools, further reduce class size and even possibly reduce the tax

burden, Eagen said.

Both the Board of Education and the Kings Park parents in the audience said they were largely pleased with the district’s proposed budget.

The last installment is expected to take place on April 14. By then both the district and parents hope state aid runs will be available as they near the end of budget season.

Police said she possessed a credit card that was not hers, and was also found in possession of heroin.

Senate strengthens sex offender laws by baRbaRa donlon

Nine bills that aim to close loopholes in state laws protecting children and communities from sex offenders await action from the State Assembly, as the State Senate approved the bills last month.

State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) sponsored seven of the nine bills that address critical issues regarding the safety of children.

One of the bills would require the schools to notify parents about sex offenders living within the district.

Another bill co-sponsored by Senator Michael Venditto (R-Massapequa) addresses a New York State Court of Appeals ruling relating to Nassau County.

In that case, the court sided with a sex offender who completed his parole and moved within 500 feet of a Nassau County school. His actions complied with state law but violated a local residency restriction. The new bill enables local municipalities to respond to the needs of their community and create laws relating to sex offenders. Communities would be allowed to put additional restrictions in place, as long as they are not less restrictive than state laws.

“I think the timing on this is important, we don’t want gaps,” Flanagan said in a phone interview.

Another bill reduces the amount of time it takes to determine a convicted sex offender’s risk level, in an effort to make sure they are not released into the community without being designated, among other requirements.

An offender can be labeled a level one, two or three. It is important for a risk determination to be made, as it determines if the offender has a low, moderate or high risk of repeating the offense again, and it dictates how many years an offender must register with the state. Also, some laws apply to certain levels of offenders but not others.

According to the New York Sate Sex Offender Registry, as of March 9, Suffolk County is home to 535 level-one, 305 level-two and 170 level-three offenders. There are currently 12 offenders without any risk designation. In Suffolk County, the sex offender recidivism rate dropped 100 percent from six cases in 2011 and 2012 to zero cases to date.

Another bill would fix a loophole that allowed sex offenders to spend significant periods of time at a residence other than the primary one registered with the state. The bill amends the definition of a residence and requires the offender to register any location at which he or she spends two or more days a week.

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (RMelville) also signed on to sponsor the State Assembly version of the bill that prohibits levels one, two and three sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of any school in the state. The Senate has already approved the bill.

Lupinacci said he is pushing for not only this bill but all of them to be approved, as the safety of children is what matters most.

The Terry Road resident told police that someone called her, saying they were from the IRS and demanded funds in an amount under $1,000.

Screaming match A man drove up in front of another man in a car in Nesconset on March 5 around 10:25 p.m. and began yelling and threatening the victim verbally, police said. There were no arrests.

Windows damaged A 47-year-old Saint James woman was arrested on March 7 at her home and charged with second-degree criminal trespass after police said she entered a 2nd Avenue home and damaged two basement windows at 7 a.m. that day, police said.

Best Buy bracelet thief sought in Huntington Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police 2nd Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the man who stole items from a store in Huntington Station.

A man entered Best Buy, located at 148 Walt Whitman Rd., on Feb. 12, 2015 at 5:41 p.m. and placed a Fitbit bracelet in his jacket and attempted to leave the store. The man was stopped by security, but refused to hand over the bracelet.

He then fled the store in a black Nissan Altima, NY license plate GSR6696.

St. Joseph’s CYO team advances to Elite Eight The St. Joseph’s sixth-grade boys’ travel basketball team is headed to the Elite Eight, vying to make the Final Four on the road to the Long Island championship.

After coming in second place in its league during the regular season, the team advanced in the first round of the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic Youth Organization playoffs with a 32-31 victory over St. Raymond’s of East Rockaway.

In the team’s typical, hard-nosed fashion it displayed throughout the regular season, the boys played tight defense the rest of the way to seal the victory.

With the win, the team improved its record to 10-3 and will face St. Bernard’s of Levittown on March 14 in the quarterfinals.

When the season began, there were 52 teams in the division. As of now, St. Joseph’s is among eight teams left looking to earn the Long Island championship title.

Ottaviano and sophomore guard Christiana de Borja each tallied seven, and senior forward Alex Werbitsky added six.

Junior forward Leanne Corso led the way in scoring for Commack with 12 points, Schultz and freshman forward Lauren Maline followed with six points apiece, and freshman guard Casey Hearns tacked on five.

Lavey said that at the start of the season he thought there were five or six teams that were better than his, but felt his team’s success was due to the girls’ everyday effort, dedication and grit.

“Keep in mind we won the first [playoff] game [against Hauppauge] at the buzzer — they missed a layup, otherwise we would’ve been out in the first round,” he said. “So it’s a tribute to these girls that we somehow did it, and stayed alive.”

Commack senior forward Casey Keenan said it took a lot of hard work and dedication — and countless hours in the gym — to win the Cougars’ firstever Suffolk title.

“It’s not the easiest thing getting up on Saturday mornings for practice,” she said. “Our girls came to the gym and worked hard from the start of practice to the end, every time. We treated practice like a game and we never let up.”

Smithtown kids learn about life 350 years ago

Students in grades three through five at Smithtown Elementary School recently recognized the 350th year of Smithtown’s existence by welcoming Smithtown town historian Brad Harris.

Students worked on comparative projects to show what life was like for children their age 350 years ago. Special area sections integrated this theme through literature, games, art and music projects. Several local events to commemorate Smithtown’s 350 years of existence are being planned by the Smithtown Historical Society, the Town of Smithtown and other local organizations running through the end of the year.

Smithtown CSD students will continue to be active participants in the celebration through future events and projects.

Smithtown High School West seniors John Compitello and Rachel Rock and Smithtown High School East senior Olivia Winkeler have all advanced to the finalist round in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. All three are now in the running to be named National Merit Scholarship winners.

A variety of information is available for National Merit Scholarship Corporation selectors to evaluate the finalists, including academic record, school curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership and the finalist’s essay.

Each finalist competes for a $2,500 scholarship, as well as corporate and college-sponsored merit scholarships.

Only 7,600 students in the country will be named National Merit Scholarships winners this spring.

Compitello is currently enrolled in AP English literature, AP calculus BC, AP government, AP chemistry, AP physics with calculus and AP economics. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Italian Honor Society, English Honor Society and president of the Math Honor Society and has captained the Quiz Bowl and Science Olympiad teams. He intends to major

in computer science with a possible dual major in math or physics.

Rock will have completed 10 AP-level classes as well as a myriad of honors classes and college-level German upon graduation. She has been a four-year member of the Symphonic Band playing marimba. She is a member of the German Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and English Honor Society and plans to major in cellular/molecular biology or neuroscience. Recently, she broke the women’s Guinness World Record for planking.

Winkeler is enrolled in Advanced Placement biology, physics, world history and U.S. history courses, as well as college-level Spanish. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the English Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and, as an oboist, Tri-M Music Honor Society. She plays tennis and plans to major in premed with an interest in psychology and neurosurgery.

Winkeler is also a member of the Nissequogue Volunteer Fire Department.

About 1.4 million juniors entered this year’s National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT, an initial screen for program entrants. About 50,000, or less than 1 percent, of the nation’s graduating high school seniors qualify for recognition.

Keeping with tradition since 2011, Kings Park held its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 7 — the first Saturday of March.

Main Street in Kings Park was lined in a stream of green, with the sound of bagpipes and drums reverberating in the air. Margaret Kirby Foley and James Kirby were named grand marshals of the parade this year, making the sister and brother the first two people to be named grand marshals,

In its short history, the parade has grown from a community celebration to a Long Island tradition, with residents from other towns attending, like Cami Leon of Commack, “I’ve been here three years in a row now,” Leon said. “I like it because it’s small, and it’s cute.

They throw candy so that the kids can run for something, and it’s not too big, which is nice.”

The parade this year featured 120 organizations that marched, from schools to the NYPD and various fire departments.

Protecting against sex offenders it’s easy to unite behind protecting our communities against sex offenders. That’s why we support recent measures in the New York State Senate to close loopholes in current laws to do just that, and we urge the Assembly to sign on to them.

The package of nine bills would enact a range of measures that would allow public authorities to more closely monitor the whereabouts of registered sex offenders. one measure would, as part of their residency requirements, mandate they report not only their addresses but also any location at which they spend more than two days a week.

Another law would allow local municipalities to enact their own restrictions on sex offenders, as long as they are not less restrictive than state laws already on the books.

The push is a direct response to a recent New York State Court of Appeals ruling that sided with a registered sex offender who had completed his parole and moved within 500 feet of a Nassau County school — an action that complied with state law but violated a local residency restriction.

The package of laws would do other things, too, like require level two and level three sex offenders to disclose their employment and residency on the state registry and mandate that schools distribute information to parents about offenders living in the district. it would also prohibit level two and level three offenders from living within 1,500 feet of their victim’s residence.

State Sen. John Flanagan (r-east Northport) put it well this week: “There’s no reason to wait.”

While we realize these types of restrictions may just push out sex offenders to other communities — maybe not making us the best neighbors — we’re okay with a “not-in-my-backyard” stance on this issue.

When you consider the types of crimes sex offenders commit, it’s hard to rationalize wanting to give high-risk sex offenders some breathing room. Given the number of sexual assaults that go unreported year after year, this could at least help us defend against the offenders about whom we do know.

The streets of Smithtown have had their fair share of snow over the last several weeks.

Enforce snow codes To The ediTor: on March 1, the very day that islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was sworn in, i received a mass email from her office, detailing the enforcement of the codes regarding snow emergencies in her town.

This probably occurred because i live near the islip town line, but after reading, it showed how much of an enforcement difference can occur, even between our adjacent towns.

For example, while Smithtown homeowners and businesses obviously haven’t been required to shovel their sidewalks since this year’s initial snowstorm of Jan. 26, Chapter 47A-17 of the islip Town code specifically requires

homeowners to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks and business owners to also keep storm drains and fire hydrants clear or face stiff fines.

Yet, year after year, Smithtown town codes either do not contain these provisions or they continue to ignore their enforcement.

Since this year’s first snowstorm, essentially nothing has been done to compel homeowners and businesses — aside from those on Main Street — to comply. Now, more than six weeks later, even on other main through streets like Smithtown Boulevard, Southern Boulevard, route 111 and the brand new sidewalks along route 347, basically no sidewalk snow removal has taken place.

When i contacted the NYS department of Transportation

about this, they told me that the Smithtown highway department is responsible for the route 347 sidewalks. i then spoke to robert Murphy, deputy superintendent of highways, who said that the doT is responsible for state roads and felt that also included their new sidewalks.

Smithtown has recently been depicted on News 12 as one of the most dangerous areas on Long island to walk for pedestrians.

We must then ask how many years are the homeowners, businesses and the highway department going to ignore their fellow residents’ safety by compelling them to walk on icy streets because they refuse to shovel their sidewalks? ronald Gendron Smithtown

People, can we all get along?

odney King once asked, “People ... can we all get along?” That was in the days after police who had beaten him after a high-speed chase were acquitted for brutality, leading to the murderous 1992 Los Angeles riots.

The answer to his question, almost 24 years later, is still “no.” Sure, we get along in some places. And yet, at the University

of Oklahoma, a group of white students on their way to a dance were chanting about how African-Americans — using a reprehensible word — would never join their fraternity.

After a video surfaced, the fraternity quickly cut ties, kicking out that chapter. People marched in protest, while the university president said he couldn’t sleep.

Our country is filled with contradictions. We have our first African-American president.

We recently remembered the 50th anniversary of the Selma march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where police brutally beat marchers determined to express their frustration with an unfair voting system.

Someone forgot to tell those giddy college kids who we really are. Their chants and attitudes strike at something humans have battled throughout our history.

It’s a question of who is “in” and who is “out.” What they were saying, and the racist way they said it, was that they would

never admit someone that was different from them. Why is it so important to have an “out” group — people to hate, to reject and to ridicule?

On some level, I understand why the disenfranchised might hate the empowered. The people who have no say in government, who feel cut off from power, who have nothing to lose are sometimes the ones who lead a revolution. They see the unequal distribution of wealth and power and demand changes.

But kids dressed in tuxedoes and gowns attending college?

Maybe this speaks to our education system, not only at the University of Oklahoma but across the country. Maybe we spend too much time preparing for standardized tests and not enough time understanding who we are, where we come from and what we represent.

Yes, democracy is difficult and complicated. At the same time that we are guaranteed free speech through the First

Amendment, we can’t shout “fire” in a crowded theater and we can’t urge discrimination and violence against a particular group just because it sounds funny to a group of kids on a bus on the way to a dance.

Maybe technology is making these ugly moments more visible. If someone didn’t have a cellphone on that bus, those kids would have gone to the dance, had their fun, said and chanted whatever was on their minds, and gone about their lives.

There’s plenty of lessons in this ugly moment. Some of the kids on that bus might not have thought it was amusing and might not have chanted. Sitting on the bus, however, and saying nothing becomes guilt by association. The short video I saw shows one particular fellow who seemed to be leading the charge, smiling, gesticulating and enjoying each use of this totally abhorrent word.

Should someone have confronted him? Was there someone sitting on that bus who thought,

“Wait, this is just so wrong?” Not to blame the media, but every outlet these days, including movies, pushes limits. I’m still stunned by some of the unexpected turns in the awful spy comedy movie “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”

That’s not an excuse. We are what we think, how we act and what we say. Maybe it’s time children asked themselves the question our parents’ generation asked whenever we got out of line: “Who do we think we are?”

A technological magic carpet ride to the past

Apple has been much in the news of late, introducing its “Dick Tracy” watch along with other sophisticated new products, and we have gotten used to the idea that the tech company has revolutionized our world. But then one little incident drove home for me the miracle wrought by Apple and its Silicon Valley colleagues. We marvel anew. Here is an example.

I was chatting with a friend, who confessed that she had lots of jobs to do and was not doing any of them because she was just being lazy. Since I have known her for a long time and am secure in the belief that she will forgive my little idiosyncrasies, I began to sing the lyrics of a song her lament brought to mind. The words go like this: Lazy bones, sleepin’ in the sun, How you ’spect to get your day’s work done?

You’ll never get your day’s work done, Sleepin’ in the noonday sun.

She immediately perked up and asked where that song came from, a movie or a show? I thought a moment, then told her the song came from my mother, who also had a habit of just bursting into song whenever the circumstances triggered a melody. (You see where I got it — must be a special gene.)

I’d heard her sing that song many times as she worked. So where did she get it, this lazy, contagious

melody suited to a crooner like Bing Crosby or Perry Como? My friend was persistent, encouraging me to think of the song’s origin.

Unable to reply, I did what I have done thousands of times when I have been stumped for a fact or reference. I turned on my cellphone and searched the Web. Not sure how to ask for information, I simply typed in “song lazy bones” in Google and to my surprise, up came fully a dozen references to the song. I learned that it was part of the Tin Pan Alley genre, written in 1933 with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and music by Hoagy Carmichael. It was a major hit by Ted Lewis and Mildred Bailey when it was released, selling over a million copies around the world at a time when a million was really a million. No wonder my mother knew it.

The song, it seems, was written in 20 minutes. Carmichael related that Mercer had come over to his apartment and caught him

Inspired by the sight, Mercer told Carmichael he was going to write a song called “Lazy Bones.” Carmichael perked right up, the two men went over to the piano, Mercer threw out the first line, Carmichael started playing a melody — and 20 minutes later the famous song had emerged. How do I know all that?

It was written in Wikipedia, one of the selections offered by Google.

Better yet, as I considered the other listings, I saw one from YouTube, touched the screen to pull it in, and in five seconds was listening to and watching Dorothy Dandridge and Carmichael sitting alongside each other at the piano and singing “Lazy Bones” in 1941.

The song is irresistible. Mercer was a Southerner from Savannah, Ga., who resented what he called the phony southern vernacular lyrics written by those who had never been to the South. The popularity of the song has been attributed by some to the authenticity

So in a matter of seconds, I was transported back by YouTube to my mother’s kitchen, a young child enjoying the rich smell of the roasting chicken, watching her peeling the carrots and listening to her singing “Lazy Bones” all the while. She was probably then in her 30s, her hair was still brown and a starched apron was stretched around her trim figure.

Talk about “back to the future,” this was a magic carpet ride back to the past until the song ended.

Looking at the iPhone in the palm of my hand, I was stunned by the power of the experience. I can hardly wait to see the technological miracles still to come.

Although some called it a meaningless game whereby both teams, win or lose, play for the Long Island championship title, you couldn’t tell by the intensity on the court.

At stake was the bragging rights for the overall Suffolk County Section XI crown. The Commack girls’ basketball team controlled the game early, but it was Harborfields’ smothering defense that

made the difference in the game, as the Tornadoes took their first lead in the final seconds of the first quarter and never looked back to win 48-37. The game was played at Suffolk County Community College, Selden, on Friday, March 6.

Commack, the Suffolk County Class AA champion, will face Baldwin for the Long Island large school title, and Harborfields, the Class A champion, squares off against North Shore for the small school title. Both games will be held at LIU-Post on March 13, with the Tornadoes playing at 5 p.m. and Commack taking to the court at 7:30 p.m.

Commack assistant coach Glenn Lavey, the Cougars nabbed their first Suffolk County title in program history. Harborfields, on the other hand, is no stranger to going deep into the postseason, winning the Suffolk title last year and making it to the semifinal round at Hudson Valley Community College last season, where the Tornadoes were two wins away from a state title. This season, the girls first topped No. 1 ElwoodJohn Glenn for the Class A title, and followed it up with a win over Hampton Bays, for the small school champion title.

Lavey said that his team came to win, but he had benched two starters because of lingering injuries, and didn’t want to risk further injury before the Long Island title game.

Harborfields turned up the defensive heat, giving Commack few looks at the rim, and senior forward Donasja Scott was the difference in the game, as she was unstoppable down low.

“It starts with hard work and our coach always tells us that ‘will always beats skill,’” Scott said. “And we all work hard … really hard.”

Harborfields senior guard Helena Ottaviano took matters into her own hands with her team trailing 9-8 with 21 seconds left in the first quarter. With two shots at the foul line, she swished both to help her team edge ahead 10-9, and give the Tornadoes a lead they would not relinquish.

Commack threatened with 3:41 left in the third when Commack senior center Chelsea Schultz drained a 3-pointer to close within three, 27-24, but her team

would never get that close again.

The Tornadoes’ press stifled the Cougars’ offense, limiting them to few looks at the rim. Scott made her presence known as the guards fed her the ball, and Commack had no answer.

In the closing seconds of the third, Scott appeared at the charity stripe shooting 1– and-1, and nailed both as her team surged ahead 34-27. Scott was perfect from the foul line all evening, hitting six of her six free-throw attempts.

The senior forward was just as effective defensively. She stole the ball midway through the final quarter and threw it downcourt for a fast break. Harborfields missed the first shot and relied on Scott to score 2 points in the play she started.
