Cops nab suspect in Kings Park shooting By phil corSo

A Middle Island man was arrested over the weekend and charged in connection with an armed robbery in Kings Park that left one victim with a bullet wound to the leg, the Suffolk County Police Department said. Gaven Benson, 16, was a guest in Amal Cummings’ home on Old Dock Road in Kings Park on July 1 to help her move when police said he pointed a gun and demanded money from both Cummings and her friend, 29-year-old Brentwood man Henry Wro-

bel, to which Cummings complied. The teen then shot Wrobel once in the leg and fled at around 11:15 p.m., cops said. Wrobel was treated at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and later released, Suffolk County police said. Police said Benson was arrested on Northbridge Drive in Coram at about 4:45 p.m. on July 3 after a police investigation and charged with assault, robbery, attempted robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. His attorney could not be reached for comment.

Medical building breaks ground in Village of The Branch

The 15,100-square-foot facility is considered a landmark project of Whitetop Mountain, the Long Island-based commercial real estate firm behind the project. BY PHIL CORSO

Development has begun in the Village of The Branch community of Smithtown, paving the way for a new medical facility unlike any other in the township. Long Island-based developer Whitetop Mountain Professional Properties and Islandia-based contractor Stalco Construction announced they had broken ground earlier this week on a new 15,100-square-foot medical and research building at 226 Middle Country Road worth roughly $5 million. The new facility will soon be home to two tenants,

North Shore-LIJ Health System’s diagnostic imaging center and the headquarters and product research and development facilities of MIDI, a medical, life sciences and home health care product development consulting firm. “We are excited to begin the development of the new building, which will complement other medical services facilities already established in the area,” said Christopher Montalbano, Whitetop principal. Fellow Whitetop principal Gregory Montalbano said the building was a key move for his group that should usher in state-of-the-art services in Smithtown.

“226 Middle Country Rd. is the cornerstone of Whitetop Mountain’s strategy of developing properties for the medical services and product research and development industries,” Gregory Montalbano said. “Our firm focuses on building a portfolio of real estate facilities designed specifically for health care, research and professional services tenants in the greater New York region.” The structure will house state-of-theart medical services and research and development facilities. The foundation will feature reinforced-concrete footings and foundation walls. The building will have a

steel structural system and six-inch metal frame exterior walls with brick veneer as well as colonial-looking trim to reflect the heritage of the neighborhood, the developer behind the project said. “The architecture of the new one-story building will reflect the colonial feel of the historic Village of The Branch neighborhood, which dates back to the late 1600s,” said Alan Nahmias, president of Stalco. “The building’s façade will feature brick face, columns and other ornamental architectural elements prevalent in the landmark structures neighboring the new development.”

Kings Park BOE gets new blood By Phil COrsO

The Kings Park board of education swore in its newest members this week at a reorganization meeting. Newcomer Kevin Johnston and incumbent Diane Nally were sworn in alongside Pam DeFord, who will serve another term as Kings Park BOE president. Back in April, voters ousted Vice President Charlie Leo (1,108 votes) and voted in Nally (1,821) and Johnston (1,886) for the two open seats on the district’s board of education. Johnston previously served as an English teacher at Kings Park High School, but retired in June and said he is hoping to take his newfound time and put it toward helping the community by serving on the board. Johnston said he had inside experience he can bring to the board, as he not only lives in the community, but also taught within the district for 34 years. Some of his main priorities in his newfound position, he said, include working on technology improvements and lowering class size. He also said he hopes to look for other sources of funding, including an alumni committee and grant funding. Nally has held her trustee position for three years and said she would use this new term to accomplish what she referred to as “unfinished business.” The trustee has been very vocal about the need for a librarian at the district’s two elementary schools. Currently, there is no librarian at Park View and Fort Salonga elementary schools, and that is something Nally said she would like to change with another term. Some of the most pressing issues facing the board this year, she said, include lowering class sizes on the elementary and secondary levels and making sure public education has a vocal advocate moving forward.

3 kayakers rescued: SCPD Strong winds left three kayakers lost and adrift on Tuesday before emergency responders brought them to shore, the Suffolk County Police Department said. Michael Fisher, 16, his brother Matthew Fisher, 20, and Kevin Nobs, 16, all of East Northport, were a little more than one mile north of Crab Meadow Beach in Fort Salonga when police said winds picked up and brought them out into the Long Island Sound — too far for them to paddle back to shore. Nobs’ kayak had overturned while Matthew Fisher jumped out of his kayak to attempt to swim to shore, police said. The three had become separated in the exchange and were floating as two lifeguards at Crab Meadow Beach grabbed their long boards and jumped into the water to try and save them. They were, however, unsuccessful. Marine Bureau Police officers Paul Carnival and Keith Walters responded to the incident and rescued all three kayakers along with the two lifeguards who tried to save them. The kayakers did not require medical attention, police said. - Phil COrsO

O’Connor challenges Bellone for executive spot Suffolk Republicans select candidate with experience serving as town councilman, building commissioner By Victoria Espinoza

The Suffolk County executive race is on. County Republicans have selected Jim O’Connor to challenge Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) in November. And in his words, O’Connor said he could not be more honored to represent his party in the pivotal race. “John Jay LaValle [chairman of the Suffolk County Republican Committee] called me up and asked me if I would be interested in the position, and I said of course,” he said. “Why wouldn’t you be interested in that position?” O’Connor, now a resident of Great River, is a partner in the Manhattan law firm of Maroney O’Connor LLP. He has a long resume of working in local government, starting in the Town of North Hempstead in 1998 as an elected councilman, where he served until 2001. From 2006-08, O’Connor was appointed building commissioner for North Hempstead. He had a very brief run at the Nassau county executive spot in 2001 — for approximately 48 hours, to be exact — before the Nassau Republicans chose to back candidate Bruce Bent instead.

TBR

O’Connor’s opponent, Bellone, also garnered similar public service accolades before assuming office at the county level in 2011. Bellone served on the Babylon Town Board for four years, starting in 1997, and was then elected supervisor of Babylon Township in 2001. Since being voted into office, Bellone said he was proud of passing three consecutive balanced budgets under the tax cap, securing a $383 million investment in clean water infrastructure — the largest of the county in 40 years — and negotiating labor contracts that make new employees more affordable and requires new employees to contribute to health care costs. “We must continue to move Suffolk County forward,” Bellone said in an email through a spokesperson. “While we have made a lot of progress there is so much work left to do.” Specifics of moving Suffolk County forward, Bellone said, include continuing to hold the line on taxes, creating new jobs, growing the economy and keeping young people on Long Island. Bellone also said he is interested in utilizing better the many assets that Suffolk

County has, including Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. If re-elected, he said he wants to make sure the county is leveraging those assets to create innovation jobs. But O’Connor said he found flaws in the way that Bellone has handled the financial aspects of the county. “The attitude is, ‘Let’s put off tomorrow what we could do today,’ and that

is hurting my children and my children’s children, in terms of the amount of debt that will fall on their shoulders,” O’Connor said in a phone interview. Under an O’Connor administration, there would be an implementation of a Suffolk County debt management plan, which would start the process of a debt ceiling, much like what has been done in Washington D.C., O’Connor told Times EXECUTIVE RACE continued on page A8

Beacon Record Newspapers in an exclusive interview. “It’s a simple concept,” he said. “Let’s look at the county’s existing revenue streams and compare it to the county’s maturing debt in an effort to retire, or reduce, the interest payments that will burden future generations of Suffolk residents.” Suffolk County has $180 million of structural deficit and more than $1.5 billion in cumulative debt, according to O’Connor, who said these factors have led the New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, a Democrat, to say that the county is in fiscal distress. O’Connor said he wants to stand up for the taxpayers of the county. According to Bellone, when he first entered office, Suffolk County’s finances were in free fall, with a deficit of more than $400 million. He has since cut the deficit significantly by shrinking the government by more than 10 percent. “I know that Suffolk County taxpayers are overburdened,” Bellone said. “That’s why I am committed to staying under

the property tax cap at the same time as I cut my own salary and volunteered to be the first employee in the history of Suffolk County to directly contribute to their health care.” Keith Davies, campaign manager for Bellone, said his candidate was the right choice for residents to continue moving Suffolk County forward: “Steve Bellone has a proven record of protecting our tax dollars and our quality of life. He’s balanced three consecutive budgets, kept taxes under the tax cap and protected our drinking water by investing in our clean water infrastructure.” The Suffolk County Republicans, however, said they believed O’Connor would lead the county in a better direction. In a statement, LaValle said O’Connor’s reputation from both Democrats and Republicans from North Hempstead is what drew him to asking him to fight for the position. “He’s a guy that is very well respected of course by Republicans in the area, but also by many Democrats,” LaValle said. “In this day and age of almost political hate, here is a guy where not only Republicans but prominent Democrats were speaking very highly of him. That stuck with me.”

PEOPLE Trotta parties at Sons of Italy festival

Suffolk County legislators Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) and Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset), Smithtown Supervisor Pat Vecchio (R), NYS Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick (R-St. James), Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy (R) and other representatives and members of the Sons of Italy came out to celebrate the second annual Heritage and Cultural Festival on the grounds of the Smithtown Historical Society on June 27. There was something for everyone, including music, craft vendors, cultural presentations, children’s activities and a food court. “This is a terrific event and Lou Gallo and his festival committee did a great job in organizing this day,” Trotta said.

Commack student chosen to represent state at National Science Camp Chantel Yang (Commack High School) is representing New York State as a delegate to the 2015 National Youth Science Camp. She is joining the top science students from across the nation and around the world for an acclaimed honors science leadership program taking place this month in Washington, D.C. The NYSC is a month-long summer honors program held at Camp Pocahontas, located in the West Virginia mountains. Program delegates study with and attend guest lectures by first-rate scientists from across the country and meet science policy makers. A luncheon is hosted by West Virginia senator, Joe Manchin (D). The featured speaker is Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health and the leader of the Human Genome Project. The delegates will also engage in outdoor activities, including hiking and camping, rock climbing and mountain biking. The camp experience concludes with a trip to the nation’s capital, where delegates will tour the city’s museums and landmarks. Delegates will also have the opportunity to meet their state’s senators. Congratulations to Chantel Yang for being chosen to participate in this nationwide program!

Legislator Kennedy to host blood drive Today, July 9, Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) in conjunction with Brookhaven Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Centereach) and New York Blood Center is hosting a blood drive at the Lake Grove Recreation Center from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. The blood banks are low, and it is of the utmost importance to refill the blood banks. This blood drive is part of Kennedy’s long series of blood drives in an effort to replenish Suffolk County’s blood banks.

“It is really important to give blood, you never know when you may be the person in need of life saving blood, so I urge everyone in the community to come out on Thursday and give two pints, a few minutes can save a life,” said Kennedy. The Lake Grove Recreation Center is located at 980 Hawkins Ave. For more information about this blood drive contact Kennedy’s office at 631-854-3735.

After a month of increased algal blooms, reduced water quality data and two of the most severe fish kills that the county has ever experienced, Long Island scientists, elected officials and agency heads have decided that it is past time — yet about time — to address the issue of harmful nitrogen pollution in our waterways. Hosted by the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, a forum on water pollution in Suffolk County was held at Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Center on June 23 to identify the core causes of nitrogen pollution and brainstorm functional, cost-effective technological solutions. In his welcome address, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) emphasized the gravity of the nitrogen pollution problem. “This problem wasn’t created overnight, and it won’t be solved overnight,” he said. “Big challenges like this won’t be solved in election cycles.” However, he mentioned that he has noticed signs of progress. “To see this group all coming together, saying we’re going to work to solve this problem, gives me great hope and optimism that we have actually turned the corner and we are now on the road to addressing our water quality issues in a real way.” At the forefront of the technical and technological sides of this progress are panelists Walter Dawydiak, director of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Amanda Ludlow, a scientist at Roux Associates Inc., Theresa McGovern, a water resources engineer at VHB and Harold Walker, a professor of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University. Dawydiak identified unsewered septic flow as the main source of the nitrogen problem. “Nitrogen, which we expected to level off, is not leveling off,” he said. He noted that 85 percent of unsewered septic flow originates from residential areas. “The elephant in the room is us,” he continued. “It’s the residential flow.” He referred to the issue as a “nonpoint source pollution problem,” and said that a change in health department standards for residential wastewater treatment — for the first time in 40 years — could mitigate the problem by regulating the installation, operation, and maintenance of septic systems. He referred to this proposed set of regulations as an example of policy driving the technology to where it needs to be. “We need better technology in this area,” Walker said. “If we’re going to solve this problem, we need to expand the tool box that we have available...we need to think about systems operating effectively

for as long as possible, with little or no maintenance. That’s the challenge.” Ludlow said she agreed, and emphasized the importance of implementing systems that treat nitrogen and other pollutants, like pharmaceuticals and hormones, on the 360,000 homes, which are currently on old systems. “Focus on technologies that affect all the constituents in our wastewater,” she said. McGovern stressed that a holistic yet specific approach to wastewater management would make these improvements possible. “We need to be consistent and science-based with the targets, yet still allow some flexibility,” she said. She suggested setting a universal — instead of concentration-based — limit on amount of nitrogen allowed to remain in wastewater, while allowing households that consistently perform under that limit increased wastewater flow. Of course, implementing new technologies and creating new oversight boards costs money. During the second panel discussion regarding funding proposals, David Calone, president of Jove Equity Partners LLC and co-chair of Suffolk Planning Commission, suggested using Hurricane Sandy recovery money to build watersheds to improve storm-water drainage and prevent sewage from entering waterways. Dorian Dale, director of sustainability and chief recovery officer for Suffolk County, noted that, though the $16 million of Sandy relief money would cover some of the cost for improvements, it could not provide the minimum $8 billion necessary to address 360,000 septic systems. He expressed that changing the tax on drinking water from a base price to one that reflects household usage could help close this gap. Calone brought up the possibility of reaching out for federal funding, putting in sewers to promote economic development, expanding the role of the Community Preservation Fund to cover nitrogen leaching issues, and increasing the cap on private activity bonds to spur work on water quality issues. “Involving the private sector is where we’ve shown a lot of leadership on Long Island,” said Anna Throne-Holst, Southampton Town supervisor. “It has to be a public/private partnership.” The panelists were optimistic about Suffolk County’s ability to undertake this project. “The last sewer project, 40 years ago, was rife with cesspool corruption,” Dale said. “I don’t think anybody’s going to have time for the shenanigans of the past.” Throne-Holst expressed her faith that the public will remain informed and engaged on this issue throughout the duration of the changes. “The public education process is well underway,” she said. “People are well aware of what a crisis this is.”

The Phillies organization declined requests for comment, pending Fanti’s signing becoming official this week. Fanti said on Twitter Monday night that he was “ready for this challenge” of taking on professional competition, which is obviously a step up from the high school competition that he’s used to, and the college competition that he bypassed. Being selected in the MLB Draft, especially in the 31st round or later is far from a guarantee that an opportunity will present itself for a young player in the Big Leagues. However, New York Mets legends Mike Piazza and Keith Hernandez were both selected far later in their respective drafts than Fanti. Lefthanded pitcher Kenny Rogers had stints with both the Mets and Yankees, and he was selected in the 39th round. Some other notable 31st round picks include pitchers Scott Erickson [1990] and Pedro Feliciano [1995], who both played for the Mets and Yankees in their careers. Erickson went in the 31st round in his fourth time being in the MLB draft. Sean Gillmartin, a southpaw currently on the Mets’ roster, was selected in the 31st round of the 2008 draft, although he was again drafted in the first round of the 2011 draft. A few Major League all-stars also got their start in the Gulf Coast League over

the last decade. Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman and Pittsburgh Pirates centerfielder and 2013 National League MVP Andrew McCutchen each played full seasons in the GCL. After the Grand Slam Challenge game in June, before he had made his decision, Fanti said how different it would be playing alongside strangers as opposed to his teammates from Hauppauge, who became his best friends. Fanti will have no trouble making friends in the Phillies organization if he pitches for them anywhere near the way he did in high school.

OPINION File photo

editoriAL

Watching our waters Summer is in full effect, and if there is one unifying trait that many of us share across this island, it is our attraction to the shorelines when the sun is shining. But let us float a reminder to our readers as we take to the water. it seems as if our newsroom has been flooded with reports of emergency responders braving the waves to save others. This week alone, we ran two serious aquatic accidents stemming from a rowboat colliding with another, much larger, vessel in Asharoken, and three kayakers who had to be rescued after being unable to get back to shore in Fort Salonga. These are prime examples of water-related mishaps we could easily avoid, if we took the proper precautions. So let’s wade through some simple solutions. The North Shore’s own dr. James Vosswinkel, of Stony Brook Medicine, said he and his team treat more patients with injuries related to drowning or boating accidents during the summer than any other time of year. Most of these accidents, he said in his warning, could have been blocked by the simplest of safety measures. to keep young children safe around the water, Long islanders can do things like designate someone to keep a constant vigilant eye on the young swimmers and install physical barriers or pool alarms to notify adults if kids accidentally fall in. For adults, doing things like never swimming alone, staying to predesignated areas of oceans or lakes, and never swimming under the influence of drugs or alcohol could do wonders to the rush of water-related incidents that wash through our news feeds. For boaters, avoiding things like drugs and alcohol should go without saying. taking advantage of the various boating safety courses being offered in our community could also be of great help. our own state Sen. Ken LaValle (r-Port Jefferson) has been pushing a free online boating course available through the state parks department website. Similar safety courses related to swimming and first aid are also available. our proximity to the water is one of our most coveted perks of living on an island in the summer, but with that also comes great responsibility. There are enough threats that are more or less are out of our hands, like shark sightings, riptides or even a Portuguese man-of-war sting. The least we can, and should, do as beachgoers and water lovers is take the necessary steps to make sure we can all enjoy these perks safely.

Local issues matter to the editor: i recently reread this post dated Nov. 10, 2014: “Just 36.4 percent of the voting-eligible population cast ballots as of last tuesday, continuing a steady decline in midterm voter participation that has spanned several decades. The results are dismal but not surprising — participation has been dropping since the 1964 election, when voter turnout was at nearly 49 percent.” if the author found those numbers alarming, i wonder how he or she would feel about a typical Smithtown voter turnout of 23 to 24 percent of the voting-eligible population. We live in a town of vibrant,

hard-working individuals that take pride in their properties and businesses. My friends include entrepreneurs, professionals, middle and upper management and just plain old-fashioned hard workers. i can’t understand why people who care so much in all those avenues of life show such apathy when it comes to voting and deciding who manages our local government services. i understand that the sheer number of votes in a national election can make you feel like your vote is meaningless; however, when it comes to local elections, your vote is much more significant. Combined with the fact that local elections determine your immediate quality of life, it seems almost foolish to leave these decisions in the

hands of so few. i write this in part because i am running for town Council this year; a good turnout ensures that whoever is elected receives a clear mandate from the people of Smithtown. i also hope that the voters will make the effort to learn where each candidate stands on the issues that are most important to them. Please find a way to vote. don’t let weather or a late night in the office deter you from what will ultimately affect the way you and future generations of our town live. Local issues matter. don’t let others decide for you.

The big matter of leaving our comfort zone

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

hen does what we do matter? More importantly, how do we handle the moments that matter? Each day, we go through so many activities that are so mundane as to require little to no concentration. We can walk to a deli, order a sandwich, nod at someone familiar on the street and engage in a conversation

with our boss on a cellphone. We have become incredibly adept at multitasking, making it so much easier not to focus on any one activity or even thought. We are not exactly grand masters of chess, thinking several moves ahead to gain an advantage over an ingenious opponent. We allow ourselves to wade through a pool of activities and decisions that are a collection of loose change jingling in our pockets. But then there are those days, hours or moments that turn the ordinary into something filled with so much electricity that the muscles in our legs that hold us up threaten to buckle. The thrilling and terrifying collide in our minds. Something real is at stake and the outcome isn’t predetermined, at least not as far as we know. We need these moments that matter, even if they make our mouths dry, send pinpricks to our fingers and make us feel as

if we can suddenly sense the rotation of the Earth. Why? How does leaving our comfort zone help? Well, for starters, it reminds us of who we are and what we want. Yes, she might say “no” and yes, we might not pass our driver’s test. So what? If this is what we want, the only mistake would be avoiding trying to get what we want because we might not get it. It’s easy to believe we are not ready or that we are not good enough. Why not roll up our sleeves and give it a shot? Maybe if we could convert all that energy and anxiety into something else, we’d feel empowered by big moments. Those pinpricks in our fingers might make them even faster and more nimble than we could imagine, allowing us to play the piano more efficiently than we ever have, while that racing heart and dry tongue could be just the kind of internal obstacles we need to overcome to

believe in ourselves. When these telltale signs return, they might become familiar companions on the road to something bigger and better. Butterflies feel strange in our stomachs because they give us the sensation we don’t get when we turn the ignition on for our car, when we pick up the phone and dial a number we know by heart or when we walk down a familiar hallway at work to hear our colleagues share views they have constantly offered for years. Maybe we need a few more butterflies in our lives. We need to feel something unusual and exciting, something bigger and brighter and something that shakes us up. Maybe we need to imagine seeing those butterflies outside of our stomachs and fluttering around us. While we take for granted that those butterflies are a sign of nerves, they are also an interesting choice. Butterflies fall in the same category as bunnies.

Why not roll up our sleeves and give it a shot?

We like them. If we can somehow imagine them fluttering just outside us, circling a room or a field, we can breathe deeply in the moment. When we look back on any given year, we can gain a new appreciation and perspective on these opportunities. They may not only define a time, but they may also help remind us that our lives are not just about the ordinary — they are about embracing and conquering the moments that matter.

An incredible life of courage and humanity

between you and me by leah S. DuNaief

hen I come across a wonderful story, I like to share it with you, and so I will tell you today about a Briton named Nicholas Winton. You probably don’t recognize his name because he told no one about his extraordinary deeds, not even his wife. It was only after she found a scrapbook, in the attic of their home in 1988, that the world began to learn of his courage and humanity defying Hitler on the eve of World War II. Winton was a London stock-

broker in December 1938 and about to go to Switzerland on a ski vacation when a friend, who was aiding refugees in the newly annexed Czechoslovakia, urged him to come to Prague. There, Winton found huge numbers of refugees, who were trying to escape Hitler, living in “appalling conditions,” according to The New York Times obituary on July 2 that told of Winton’s life. There was little hope of escape for those on the run because other countries had closed their borders, especially to Jewish immigration, except for a unique effort that was mounted by Britain. Kindertransport was an attempt to rescue unaccompanied Jewish children up to the age of 17 if they had a host family willing to accept them. The Refugee Children’s Movement in Britain reached into Germany and Austria and according to The Times, some 10,000 children were saved before the war began. There was no equivalent effort made in Czechoslovakia, despite the clear danger evidenced by such horrors as Kristallnacht — the “Night of Broken Glass” —

that had shortly before Winton’s trip struck Jewish shops, homes and synagogues in Germany and Austria, As Winton said in a Times interview in 2001, “One saw the problem there, that a lot of these children were in danger, and you had to get them to what was called a safe haven, and there was no organization to do that.” That is what Winton did: He created an operation that worked with furious speed, racing against the murderous rampage of the Nazi war machine. The modest stockbroker, albeit from a blueblooded background, cleverly used every means at his disposal, including “dangers, bribes, forgery, secret contacts with the Gestapo, nine railroad trains, an avalanche of paperwork and a lot of money,” as described in the obit. The volunteers called themselves the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, Children’s Section and received aid from the Refugee Children’s Movement. They made appeals in newspaper ads, also church and synagogue bulletins, for host families and money in Britain, and in

Prague “cultivated the chief of the Gestapo, Karl Bömelburg — they called him ‘the criminal rat’ after his inspector’s rank of kriminalrat — and arranged for forged transit papers and bribes to be passed to key Nazi and Czech railway officials, who threatened to halt trains or seize the children unless they were paid off,” according to The Times. As word spread and desperate parents brought their children to a rented storefront office, the long lines attracted Gestapo attention. “Perilous confrontations were resolved with bribes,” according to The Times. When the money ran out, Winton used his own. Can you imagine the searing pain involved with giving up your children to strangers? “Winton’s Children” numbered 669 lives saved. The survivors include the film director Karel Reisz — “Saturday Night and “Sunday Morning” (1960), “Isadora” (1968) and “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” (1981) — and other celebrities. Today there are some 6,000 descendants. Winton was a most reluctant hero, not wishing to have his wife,

Sir Nicholas Winton was a most reluctant hero. Grete Gjelstrup, a Dane he married in 1948, tell anyone. She gave the scrapbook to a Holocaust historian, and then newspaper articles, books, television programs and movies ensued. He was showered with honors, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, astonished all the while at the fuss being made. Sir Nicholas Winton was the son of a merchant banker of German-Jewish origin who had converted to Christianity. He had grown up in a safe and comfortable world of privilege, yet readily risked it all to help others in dire peril. He would serve as a Royal Air Force officer in the war, and later worked for refugee organizations and a charity that assisted the elderly. For all his exceptional efforts, he was richly rewarded with a long life. He died last week at the age of 106.
