Hurricane Sandy left many homes in shambles, including 182 Shore Road in Mount Sinai. The storm flooded the property, which stands near Satterly Landing, four years ago. The owner sold the parcel to New York Rising, which is a home recover program that Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) initially established to help homeowners affected by Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

Town of Brookhaven purchased the piece of land last October-November and will allow nature to take over, as the space is not suitable for construction or reconstruction of a home. “[There] will always be a problem with flooding, so we’re just going to incorporate it into Satterly [Landing],” said Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point). Brookhaven is also evaluating another property on the block that has been around for two decades, examining it because of issues with its structure.

Flanagan puts force behind synthetic drug fight By Phil Corso

Lawmakers are stepping up in the fight against synthetic drugs, and one North Shore official said it was a major milestone in a personal initiative to combat abuse. State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) joined with Senate Majority Coalition leaders and the Independent Democratic Conference leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) to help pass a package of bills that aims to prevent the abuse of deadly synthetic drugs. In a statement, Flanagan said the drugs have become more prevalent across Long Island because their effects are similar to other known hallucinogens or narcotics. But their chemical structures, Flanagan said, are slightly altered, making it more difficult to restrict them. “The spread of synthetic drugs is affecting every community and will continue to destroy lives unless more preventive action is taken,” Flanagan said. “For five years, I have sponsored legislation that has passed the Senate on numerous occasions so that we can hold criminals accountable for the creation of new and dangerous drugs that evade our current laws. It is past time for the Assembly to join us and help put an end to synthetic drugs today.” If the Senate bill passes, the state

would zero in on the sale of the synthetic drugs known as K2, Alpha-PVP and others similar to them, by creating criminal penalties for possession and sale. The Department of Health would have to maintain an electronic database of known synthetic cannabinoids, listing their compounds, a description of products and their street names, lawmakers said. The legislation would also amend the Controlled Substances Act to add analogous drugs, Flanagan said. With support from the Senate Majority Coalition and Klein, who heads the Independent Democratic Conference, lawmakers released a report called “The State of Synthetics: A Review of the Synthetic Cannabinoid Drug Problem in New York and Solutions on Ending the Epidemic” earlier this year. The report found that New York taxpayers fronted roughly $22.7 million to respond to what Flanagan called a public health crisis in 2015. “We must KO K2 from upstate to downstate, and the Senate will send a strong message that synthetic drugs will not be tolerated in our state,” Klein said. “My analog bill will ensure that New York keeps ahead of the chemists’ curve and will ban chemicals that mimic controlled substances as they are tweaked, so the law can no longer be subverted. Now, the Assembly must take action to protect the citizens of New York State.”

and convert to natural gas, while also reconfiguring the interior, adding a vehicle exhaust removal system, replacing the emergency generator and making the building fully compliant for individuals with disabilities, among other improvements to the facility. They also plan on reconstructing the entrance of that building and adding bunkrooms to cut down on response time. “Nowadays, with traffic what it is, it takes a long time to get in your car and get all the way to the firehouse, followed [by getting] on that truck,” said David Sterne, spokesperson for the fire department. “It takes a long time for that truck to get through traffic and get where it needs to get.” Upgrading to natural gas may cost the around $300,000, but Sterne said “natural gas is a more efficient and a cheaper way to go for the future.” The goal isn’t simply to update the 28-year-old building but to also make the facility sustainable for the future and safe for firefighters. The building hasn’t been updated since somewhere between 1988 and 1990. Safety is a major concern in Station 2, as firefighters don’t have enough space to put on their gear between the fire trucks. Sterne said this is especially hazardous when a driver is leaving, as the truck could injure a firefighter who is gearing up to respond to a call. Fire departments are required to have at least 6.5 feet between each truck and four feet between the truck and the wall where the vehicles are stored. Currently, firefighters have around one foot of space to suit up. Safety concerns in the station sparked this project and evolved into tending to the department’s needs in both facilities. Station 2 requires around $2.3 million to construct a 5,000 square foot storage facility to house fire trucks and other equipment, replace the septic system, renovate the interior and update the front exterior of the station. The department also wants to install a new fire alarm system and replace the emergency generator.

A North Shore lawmaker and former Suffolk County detective has his sights set on the Suffolk County Police Department. County Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) took to the Legislature this week to introduce a procedural motion that would establish a special committee to watch over the county’s law enforcement operations. If enacted, the committee would investigate and oversee different aspects of the county police department, the legislator said. Trotta has been an outspoken critic of the police department, recently calling for the demotion of former police chief, James Burke, after his resignation amid being charged with civil rights violations and obstructing an investigation. In a statement, Trotta said there was enough evidence to support his proposed need for a committee overseeing operations of the department. “As a result of the recent allegations of wrongdoings by top officials in the Suffolk County Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, I felt compelled to sponsor this measure to review all aspects of law enforcement operations in Suffolk County,” Trotta said. The lawmaker said the special committee would be comprised of six members of the Legislature who would be tasked with reviewing the operations, procedures and practices of the entire police department as well as the district attorney’s office and the sheriff’s office. The committee would also investigate allegations of favoritism, the lack of adequate rules and procedures and the failure to comply with laws already on the books relating to internal affairs investigations in the police department, Trotta said. The Suffolk County Police Department did not respond to requests seeking comment. “As a retired Suffolk County detective who was assigned to the FBI’s Long Island task force for 10 years and now as a legislator, I feel it is incumbent upon me to try to rectify the situation created by a few bad apples in various departments,” Trotta said. The county Legislature scheduled a review of the procedural motion at its public safety committee meeting today, Feb. 4, at 9:30 a.m. If put into effect, the committee would be empowered to administer oaths and affirmations, and to compel the attendance of witnesses and the production of books and papers related to the review and investigation. It will have subpoena power with approval of the Legislature and will hold meetings and hearings as needed. In addition, the committee is authorized to hire the necessary staff to conduct its investigation, subject to appropriations by the Legislature, according to Trotta’s statement. File photo

Before topping Islip 77-69, the Rocky Point boys’ basketball team fell in the last minute of a League V matchup against Amityville last Thursday night. The Eagles led most of the way, but let the lead go when it mattered most, losing, 73-68. Harry Lynch sparked the Eagles’ offense, helping to keep his team out in front 11-8 at the 3:40 mark of the first quarter. The senior guard drove the lane with reckless abandon, as he fought his way to the rim and helped stretch his team’s lead to 21-17 by the end of the first eight minutes. Amityville picked away at the deficit, drawing within three points in the second quarter, but Lynch scored his 14th point as time ran out, and the Eagles took a 29-25 advantage into the halftime break. The matchup grew physical, which led to multiple penalties, but Rocky Point failed to convert most opportunities at the free-throw line. The Warriors battled back to take their first lead of the game, 37-35, at the 3:47 mark of the third quarter. Lynch went to the charity stripe shooting two and split the appearance to help his team close within one point, and Rocky Point senior Colin Kotarski went to the line shooting two next, and nailed

both, as the Eagles retook the lead. After a Warriors field goal that flipped the score, Rocky Point senior Ben Collesidis, with a defensive pick, took the ball down the stretch and converted his opportunity into points to again turn the tables for both teams, giving the Eagles a 40-39 edge. With the teams knotted at 43-43 late in the third quarter, Lynch nailed a clutch 3-pointer, and teammate Mason Cline, also a senior, did the same. At the end of the quarter, Rocky Point led 49-43. With both teams finding their 3-point rhythm, Amityville answered the Eagles with a Joshua Serrano trifecta to make it a 3-point game. Cline had his own answer for his opponent though, as he swished his fourth trey of the game. The clock wound down, and both teams traded points at the charity stripe. Kotarski was fouled while shooting and tacked on two points for a 60-55 Eagles lead with just over three minutes left in regulation, but Amityville hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 left to play, for a 67-65 lead. Another free-throw point made it a 3-point game, again. Lynch went to the line shooting a 1-and-1 opportunity and sank both to help his team draw within one point, but with less than 30 seconds left, Serrano made two more appearances at the stripe and cashed in on all four attempts, to put the game out of reach. Lynch topped the score sheet with 27 BASKETBALL continued on page A10

Stony Brook hospital zones in on Zika virus By Phil Corso & ViCtoria EsPinoza

North Shore hospitals are taking preventative steps to ensure patients know how to combat the Zika virus. The World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a “public health emergency of international concern” this week, just days after three Long Island patients tested positive for the virus. The Centers for Disease Control issued a travel alert for anyone going to regions including South America and Latin America, and Stony Brook Medicine officials said they were making sure to educate their patients about the symptoms and steps to take if diagnosed with the viral infection that is being spread through mosquitoes. “There is a true concern, and although the virus itself causes a benign viral infection that most people won’t even feel sick, the larger concern is that we have seen an increase of microcephalus in children born to women who had that infection during pregnancy,” said Dr. Bettina Fries, chief at the division of infectious diseases at Stony Brook Medicine. Denise Naval, director of infection, prevention and control at Huntington Hospital, said that while there is currently no treatment for the virus, there are several precautions a person can take to fight off the mosquito-related Zika. Naval said the virus is closely related to Yellow Fever, the West Nile Virus and the Dengue virus, which are all also spread through mosquito bites. She said the Zika virus is spread from the Aedes mosquito,

specifically. There are two types of Aedes species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, but only the former currently carries Zika with it and it is not native to Long Island, she said. It’s most common in tropical areas of the world. The latter does not currently carry the virus and is found in certain parts of the United States, including Long Island, she said. Naval also said Zika can not only be transmitted from a mosquito to a human, but also vice versa — from a human to a mosquito. “Only 20 percent of people will get symptoms,” Naval said in a phone interview. “Eighty percent of people infected won’t even know they are.” According to the CDC, symptoms from the Zika virus include a fever, rash, joint pain, headaches and more. Once infected, the CDC says patients must get rest, drink fluids to prevent dehydration, and take medicine such as acetaminophen to relieve fever and pain. “Pregnant women, in any point of their pregnancy, or those who are attempting to become pregnant, should consider postponing any travel to areas where Zika is present,” said David Garry, director of maternal fetal medicine and professor at the department of obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive medicine at Stony Brook Medicine. “For any pregnant women who might have traveled to a geographical area where Zika virus transmission is occurring, and is either symptomatic or asymptomatic but suspected of having been

the zika virus is carried by a specific type of mosquito.

infected, should contact their OBGYN for further evaluation.” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced that the New York State Department of Health, in conjunction with the CDC, would offer free blood test screenings for individuals who have traveled to areas where the Zika virus is going on. “We’re working closely with the CDC and local health departments to address potential cases of Zika Virus, and by offering free testing we are helping to stay ahead of this disease and protect the public health,” Cuomo said in a press release. Naval said if anyone must travel to the tropic regions, where Zika is a prob-

lem, there are some key precautions they can take. “Make sure to use bug spray with DEET; stay indoors with air conditioning if you can because insects prefer heat; and wear long sleeves and long pants,” she said. Aside from a warning for all travelers to avoid these tropic areas, there is also an extra precaution for pregnant women, as there is an added risk for a child whose mother has the Zika virus while pregnant. The baby can be born with microcephaly, a neurodevelopmental disorder where a baby is born with a smaller head than usual, or other neurological and autoimmune complications, officials said.

points, while Cline banked 19 and Kotarski added 14. The Eagles hit 65 percent of their free throws on the night, while Amityville neared 80 percent. “We were winning the whole way,” Rocky Point head coach James Jordan said. “We missed a lot of foul shots and that cost us the game. We play Islip on Monday. We’ve got to do a better job at rebounding and that’s a team we have to beat.” Although snow pushed the game to Tuesday, the boys finished the regular season with a strong showing, improving their league record to 7-5 to have a better playoff seed. Lynch was 18-for-22 from the freethrow line and had 28 points to lead Rocky Point to the win over Islip. Kotarski added 16 points and Cline tacked on 10. Rocky Point will head into the postseason later this week, but bracket information was unavailable before press time. Photo by Bill Landon

Laddie A. Decker students learn science from slime

After completing their holiday vacation reading of “Phineas L. MacGuire… Gets Slimed!,” by Frances O’Roark Dowell, fourth-grade students in Miller Place school district’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School celebrated the story of main character Phineas and his quest to become the best fourth-grade scientist ever by performing science experiments of their own. Students split into two groups and participated in four stations of interactive activities. Throughout the day, students made slime and completed a series of scientific tasks that included using microscopes to examine various enclosed mold spores. The fourth-graders also played a game of “Science Jeopardy!” to test their knowledge and understanding of the book.

Quantum Chaos places second Rocky Point High School’s Quantum Chaos robotics team earned a secondplace finish at the Fresh Meadows West Qualifier competition and also received the Judges Award trophy in recognition of the team’s effort, performance and dynamics. The 2015-16 game in Fresh Meadows is modeled after rescue situations faced by mountain explorers all over the globe. Played by two alliances of two robots each, robots scored points by “resetting” rescue beacons, delivering rescue climbers to a shelter, parking on a mountain and parking in the rescue

beacon repair zone or floor goal. The team, comprised of freshmen through seniors, has been meeting since September and began building its robot in November. The completed robot had to meet a specific size and build limitations and be designed to accomplish specific tasks within two and a half minutes in a defined 12-inch by 12-inch arena. The school’s team members include Ian Holland, Bryant Liu, Allen Lui, Juan Marin, Kyle Markland, Preston Nichols and Connor Reilly. Quantum Chaos is led by coaches Mark Moorman and Jackie Hawson.

OPINION EDITORIAL

Suffolk cop committee needs outsiders

The Suffolk County Police Department needs more oversight, but a committee entirely composed of Suffolk County legislators is not going to cut it. Rob Trotta, the Republican representative for the 13th Legislative District, called upon his experience in law enforcement when he proposed such a committee to investigate and oversee county police operations. There have been concerns after issues such as former police chief James Burke’s resignation last year amid charges of civil rights violations. Trotta is a former Suffolk County detective who once worked on the FBI’s Long Island task force. His idea would put six members of the Legislature on this committee to review police practices, as well as those in the district attorney’s office and the county sheriff’s office, and investigate allegations of

favoritism and other issues. While we support his notion of assembling an oversight committee to keep the county police department honest, we also prefer bringing in people from different backgrounds. There should be legislators involved on the committee, but we would limit it to only two members — one from the Legislature’s majority party and one from its minority. From there, we would add a local expert on ethics, one representative each from the police department, sheriff’s office and DA’s office, and perhaps a financial member such as Comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr. Bringing together these different brains and skill sets would bring more ideas to the table and help in problem-solving — diversity in opinions and backgrounds could

enhance the conversation. Having this sort of diverse membership would also help prevent abuse, as the committee Trotta has proposed will have the authority to subpoena and to administer oaths and affirmations. Not that we think our legislators

are necessarily untrustworthy, but putting that level of power into the hands of any one lone group is asking for trouble. We already have enough of that with people who have abused their authority — that’s why we’re in this position in the first place.

Where have all the Chinese flowers gone?

Between you and me By Leah S. Dunaief

C

news@tbrnewspapers.com

hinese New Year this week made me think of the Chinese people I had visited this past September, which in turn made me think of the vegetation growing out of

their heads, which then made me smile. We don’t usually think of the Chinese as being frivolous, but there they were, sporting plastic clips on their hair in the shape of vegetables, fruits and flowers. First I thought it was my imagination. Then I guessed it was some sort of fancy head covering. Finally I just stared. People — young people, older people — were walking past us matter-of-factly with flowers and weeds growing up out of their heads. Most had one or two; some had half a dozen. That was our first morning on the street outside our hotel in Shanghai. The fad moved with us as we traveled around the country. No one seemed to know how or where it started, although there was some speculation that it began in the southwestern

city of Chengdu, known for its laid-back lifestyle. And in a country in which the people are not particularly known for their individualism, they certainly did stand out on the streets. The plastic vegetation included clover, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, lavender, mushrooms, chilies, cherries, gourds and pine trees, according to an article about the fad that appeared in The New York Times at that time. The trend was ratcheted up when a popular Taiwanese singer, Jay Chou, and his wife were seen wearing bean sprouts in photographs on the Internet. They were “meng meng da.” meaning cute. Bean sprouts are still the most popular item, according to street vendors, who with their native entrepreneurial instincts, leapt into business on street corners

and in gift shops. The rapidly growing fad speaks to the power of the Internet in China to spread trends as well as ideas. “Some people think it’s cute, some think it’s just plain infantile,” one sales assistant was quoted by The Times as she was carefully arranging three flowers and a cherry stem on her friend’s head. The flower clips cost 500 renminbi each, or about 75 cents, unless one is a skillful bargainer in which case one can get perhaps three or four for the same money. Maybe the colorful plastic head gardens offer some respite from the unceasing gray pollution that covers the cities and towns in China. The greens could be seen as a wistful attempt at harmony with nature. For us, they were ready-made

I guessed it was some sort of fancy head covering. conversation pieces. We indicated our admiration to the wearers, and they smiled in appreciation. Quickly the ice was then broken and conversation, often in pantomime, proceeded from there. Taobao, which is a popular Chinese retail website, lists thousands of sellers of increasingly elaborate floral displays for one’s hair, although at this time of year, such ornamentation is probably taking second place to hats. And maybe not, since it was 64 degrees in Shanghai yesterday, warm enough for a garden to grow.
