Potential of solar farm leads Brookhaven to take action By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com In response to a proposed solar farm in Shoreham, members of the Brookhaven Town Board urge state legislators to not only stand with them in opposition, but grant them “a seat at the table” to have their voices heard and taken seriously. Since it was first submitted last June, National Grid and NextEra Energy Resources’ proposal to build a large-scale solar energy facility on the wooded property that surrounds the abandoned Shoreham nuclear power plant, and clear 350 acres of the 800acre land made up of cliffs, rolling hills and a variety of wildlife species, has sparked an outpouring of local opposition, from elected officials to environmentalists, civic associations, teachers and parents in the community. Those against it share the belief that “renewable energy is important but not

at the expense of another section of the environment.” As recently as Feb. 27, the Shoreham-Wading River school board voted unanimously against endorsing the project, despite a considerable financial offer from National Grid, which owns the Shoreham site, and NextEra. According to the companies, the proposal, developed in response to a PSEG Long Island request to help New York meet Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) renewable energy goals, would generate upwards of 72 megawatts of solar energy, provide power for more than 13,000 homes, and create between 125 and 175 construction jobs and millions of dollars in tax benefits. It’s currently being considered by LIPA, which would purchase the electricity generated by the joint companies for a period of 20 years under the contract, and New York State. Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R), a leader in the charge against the solar farm, said he thinks the companies involved are making a mistake, and wants it to be known that Brookhaven is going to do everything it can to prevent it from happening and protect the environment. In addition to the proposed site falling within Shoreham’s A-10 residential zoning code — the most restrictive in Brookhaven — which was put in place more than 25 years ago to specifically protect the “coastal forest preserve,” he said, the proposal directly violates Brookhaven’s solar code adopted last year that opposes cutting down trees or removing native forests to build solar farms or facilities. “You can build [solar arrays] on clear

However, the supervisor got word that National Grid and NextEra could get around the zoning restrictions and potentially strip

away any of Brookhaven’s say in the matter under Article X of the Public Service Law — a provision allowing “an applicant seeking approval to site a major electric generating facility to obtain a final decision from the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment, waiving all local zoning requirements, if the Siting Board finds them to be burdensome in terms of technology and costs.” The Siting Board is composed of five members appointed by the governor. The town board sprang into action, writ-

Shoreham-Wading River school board member Michael Fucito, at center with a commemorative dedication statue, was congratulated by the board on his retirement.

Shoreham-Wading River says goodbye to its ‘rock’ By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com At the end of last week’s ShorehamWading River school board meeting, it bid farewell to its “rock of reason” — a member who’s devoted 27 years to bettering the district and the lives of its students. In announcing the retirement and resignation of Michael Fucito, 79, who first joined the school board in 1977, board

president John Zukowski said Fucito had an incredible commitment to the community and had always been prepared for every meeting, leaving the job with the same dedication he started with. “When we get this job, we’re all sent out for this training [in Albany] and they tell you how to be a board member,” Zukowski said. “What they ought to do [instead] is say, ‘go follow Mike Fucito around for a

He married his wife Joan in 1960 and together they had three daughters, all of whom went through the school district. Fucito decided to join the board, and served for two terms from 1977 until 1993 and then from 2006 until last week, because he felt it was his responsibility to give back to the community and improve the district as best he could. During his tenure, he was a mover and shaker when it came to building maintenance, budget and overall safety for the students, serving on the main board of liaisons on the safety committee formed in the late 70s and 80s, when the muchopposed Shoreham nuclear power plant stood in East Shoreham. The safety committee, consisting of concerned residents, board members and teachers, was formed to discuss the district’s evacuation plans in the event of a serious nuclear accident at the plant, in the wake of the Three Mile Island accident.

“He was always an incredibly conscientious, hardworking, reflective guy and that’s what you want in a board member,” said Ed Weiss, a former board member and Fucito’s longtime friend. “You’re there to help kids and that’s the way he worked.” He didn’t quite anticipate his early March resignation. He planned on finishing out the rest of the school year before retiring and moving from Wading River to his summer home in Wells, Vermont, but his house ended up selling in just three days. Board trustee William McGrath, who’s worked alongside Fucito on the board for nine years, said his friend’s early resignation is New York’s loss and Vermont’s gain. “Mike is the epitome of what a trustee should strive to be,” McGrath said. “He’s always prepared ... he’s always willing to serve, go the extra mile, sit through the ardor of every different committee and always comes out with his same smile … He has been the glue that has held this district together for an awful long time.” Upon receiving a plaque presented by the board, Fucito humbly stated his accomplishments weren’t a one-person effort, and said it takes a whole board to work to get something done. “It has been my pleasure to serve the community all these years and I also have a great deal of respect for each of the members I’ve served with,” he said. “I wasn’t on the board to try to be a superhero or anything, I just tried to work with the staff and see how we could improve the situation for the students.”

A Mad Science scientist demonstrates different experiments to students.

Students in the Miller Avenue School in the Shoreham-Wading River school district explored the wonders of science during an assembly on March 7. During the interactive program, a scientist from Mad Science of Long Island dazzled the students with science experiments, including ones related to combustion, acids and foam. The program aimed to engage students in science as they prepare for their school’s annual science fair on March 9. Mad Science is a leading science enrichment provider on Long Island that delivers hands-on, unique science experiences for children that are as entertaining as they are educational. Its franchises around the world bring innovative programs to help educate children about science through after-school programs, preschool programs, in-class workshops, camps, birthday parties and special events. Mad Science supports scientific literacy in children. It has invested in research and development for over 25 years, and continues to do so.

Throughout the program, readers shared original poems, pieces by famous poets and spoke about their interest in each of the selections. After each reading, the audience generated positive feedback in the form of finger snapping.

67th annual parade makes way down 25A Photos by Bob Savage

On March 12, the Friends of St. Patrick held Rocky Point and Miller Place’s 67th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. Green and gold were seen down Route 25A to Broadway, as residents from all over the North Shore braved the cold to take part in this year’s festivities. Clockwise from top right, the Miller Place Fire Department led the way; while children watched on; locals showed off their holiday spirit; children played with silly string; and the royal court of queen Jessica Wooley of Rocky Point and her ladies in waiting, sister Michelle Wooley, and AnnaMaria Jacobsen of Mount Sinai wave to the crowd; and bands performed.

SportS Mount Sinai’s historic season ends with LIC loss By Bill landon It seemed as though the stars were aligned as Mount Sinai traveled to SUNY Old Westbury March 11 to take on Elmont in the Class A Long Island championship. The Mustangs’ road to the championship began with the team sharing the League VI title with ShorehamWading River, the only team to top it during the regular season. Then, Mount Sinai picked off Bayport-Blue Point in the quarterfinals, defeated Sayville in the semifinals and outscored Harborfields for the program’s first Suffolk County championship title.

Shoreham Solar Continued from page A3 ing and submitting a letter to nine state senators and assemblymen requesting that the law be amended to allow local municipalities to serve as mandatory parties to the proposed facility “application proceeding.” “To allow the overriding of local zoning without allowing the local community a significant voice in these proceedings is wrong,” reads the end of the letter, which was signed by Romaine, Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station), Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point), Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden), Councilman Michael Loguercio (R-Ridge), Councilman Neil Foley (R-Blue Point) and Councilman Daniel Panico (R-Center Moriches).

The Mustangs kept with Elmont, but found themselves trailing by 16 points late in the third quarter. Mount Sinai put on a late-game push, but fell short in the game’s final minutes, as the team’s season came to an end with a 58-51 loss. “My girls never gave up, and I’m proud of them,” Mount Sinai head coach Michael Pappalardo said. “We were down 16 points — we could’ve folded up shop, but we didn’t. At the end of the day I love my kids and I’ve got their backs. They’re awesome.” Mount Sinai’s Gabriella Sartori drove the lane early and often, as the sophomore put up points that helped the Mustangs tie the game 6-6 midway through the opening quarter. Elmont showed why it’s Nassau’s best this season though, scoring six uncontested points to take a 14-8 edge at the end of eight minutes. After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Mount Sinai senior captain Victoria Johnson scored a three-point play, and sophomore Brooke Cergol banked two points before Sartori swished a field goal of her own to go along with a pair of free throws, but the advantage was still in Elmont’s favor, 24-17, after two quarters of play. “We said that they’re going to get comfortable [with their halftime lead] so we mixed it up a little, but I give it to Elmont,” Pappalardo said. “I know my girls are legit and anybody can play at any time. We were down a little bit early, but I knew we’d come back.” After Elmont scored for a nine-point lead two minutes into the second half, Mount Sinai senior Veronica Venezia swished a shot from beyond the arc to shave the deficit to 28-20. Cergol hit her first triple of the game, as did Johnson, who also hit a field goal, but Mount Sinai still trailed 42-28 heading into the final eight minutes.

Junior Olivia Williams banked her second basket of the game, Johnson added another and went 4-for-4 from the free-

OpiniOn Editorial

Letters to the editor

Giving credit where credit’s due

Participant at politician training workshop

Talking the talk vs. walking the walk One thing members of both political parties can agree on is the 2016 presidential election birthed a new generation of activism in our country. While healthy conversations and debates can be beneficial to stimulate new ideas, the surge of ugly disputes playing out in front of town hall meetings and on social media does nothing but draw attention to the actions of the protesters instead of the issues at hand. That’s why our editorial staff supports endeavors like the workshop in Huntington this past weekend attended by more than 100 Long Islanders, designed to train those who wish to become politicians in the future. The meeting had people from various backgrounds and age groups ready to take on a more active role in forming the policies that shape our society. As our electorate becomes more diverse so should our elected officials, and events like these should certainly help in that effort. Our editorial staff finds it encouraging such workshops exist and that so many people took advantage of this one. While numerous people say how they think things should be done, most don’t put words into action. Of course, we also realize not everyone is destined to become a politician. Hopefully workshops like the one in Huntington will inspire those who feel they are not cut out for the job to at least become a more active citizen. No matter what one’s calling is in life, politician or not, we can all have a say in what goes on in Washington — conduct candidate research, vote, contact representatives. This also comes into play with local governments where it’s as simple as attending a town hall meeting and voicing concerns to a policymaker. When it comes to making our country even greater, it’s the responsibility of all citizens and those on both ends of the political spectrum. Our hope is we’ll see more workshops like the one that took place in Huntington this past weekend and more people making their ideas heard in a positive way.

In response to a March 9 article in The Village Beacon Record titled “County purchase will expand Cordwood Landing park”: It was with great pleasure that the news of the acquisition of the 5.4-acre parcel next to Cordwood Landing Nature Preserve was received by the residents of Miller Place. This parcel was in imminent danger of development and had a sevenlot subdivision approved on it less than a year ago. I live across the street from the parcel, in the house I was brought up in, in the house that my grandfather built. I knew this as a farm field and through the years watched it develop into a wooded area. I am also one of the founding members of The Friends of Cordwood Landing, an ad hoc group to promote the preservation of the parcel. We are gratified and thankful that Suffolk County is acquiring the property, but being so involved in the efforts of the preservation of this property one develops a different understanding and perception of the

File photo by Erika Karp

process that was missed in your March 9 article. That is the role the Town of Brookhaven took in the process. While the Miller Place Civic Association president mentioned them, it was really the Town of Brookhaven, specifically Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner, that deserves the credit for the preservation of this parcel. They were the ones that kept the acquisition alive through the years and gave the residents hope that something could be worked out. On the other hand, our county Legislator Sarah Anker derailed the acquisition on more

than one occasion because of the animosity she created with the seller. Luckily, the town official and staff stayed to course and put it together when all seemed lost. Also, while the county is “buying” the parcel, the acquisition is really a joint effort with the Town of Brookhaven. The town is paying 30 percent of the total price for this preservation. While press releases and articles have been written, the real preserver of the property is Brookhaven. Thank you.

Thomas Cramer Miller Place

Congressman Lee Zeldin, truthfully I can’t believe the things I’m reading on Facebook, Twitter and even this very newspaper about Congressman Lee Zeldin. The things being said about him are ludicrous to put it lightly; calling this veteran a coward — and other names I don’t feel comfortable putting into writing. This is insane. Congressman Zeldin is a hardworking, fair representative who is always willing to work with members of any party, including Democrats. He’s done so much for our district in just over the two years he’s been in office, which is why he was overwhelmingly re-elected, by a pretty sizable margin. That’s a clear indication that he is doing something right. I myself am not heavily involved in politics, but even I can name a few of his accomplishments around our area, like getting funding for Hospital Road Bridge, promoting the Fire Island to Montauk Point Project and especially his work helping veterans receive better access to health care. I’ve heard the phrase “liberal obstructionist” thrown around a bit, and I think it’s very fitting. These people are committed to

File photo by Kevin Redding

obstructing Congressman Zeldin at public events, in an attempt to promote their own liberal agenda. Instead of trying to obstruct events, it would be far better served if they tried to find common ground with our representative. Congressman Zeldin wants to work with everyone, including those who don’t always agree with him. Speaking of which, he and his office met, face to face, with hundreds of people at his mobile office

hours just last week — they stayed well after the scheduled time to accommodate all. I hope these protesters were able to come and speak with him to make real progress. To the liberal obstructionists, I say this: Wise up and work with, not against, Lee Zeldin. He’s our member of Congress, and we need him to succeed if Long Island is to keep moving forward.

OpiniOn American humor is the best medicine

I

was making a supermarket list the other day. It had the usual items: eggs, milk, cereal and yogurt. Then it occurred to me that we could use a box of low-fat, high-fiber humor. Yes, I know Nestlé, Keebler and Procter & Gamble don’t make boxes of such guffaw and giggleinducing goods. Sure, they have cute animals who endorse their products, offering us a pleasant image while we shovel the latest sugarfilled calorie bomb into our mouths, feeding addictions By Daniel Dunaief that satisfy our taste buds even if they push out our stomachs. But what we need these days, particularly as we confront our differences

D. None of the above

regularly, is a shared laugh. Americans may be innovators, we may have significant military might and we may be a beacon of democracy, most of the time, but we also have a long and comforting history of humor. Back when my father was terminally ill many years ago, I recall sitting with him in a living room with dark wallpaper, watching “The Court Jester” with Danny Kaye. As Kaye was struggling to remember where the pellet with the poison was, my father broke into a smile, laughing through a scene he’d watched dozens of times. Laughter, as the saying goes, is the best medicine. After all, actor Tom Hanks was in the TV show “Bosom Buddies” and the game show “Make Me Laugh.” He took serious roles later and has become the go-to guy for dramas like “Bridge of Spies,” but he attracted attention in his early years by dressing as a woman to live in a cheaper apartment building. He was even the star of the forgettable comedy “Bachelor Party.”

Sure, these days “Saturday Night Live” is making some people laugh. Even White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer appreciated Melissa McCarthy’s anger-ridden impersonation of him. Now, President Trump doesn’t seem to be doing much laughing. I suppose it’s tough to laugh on Twitter, unless you’re fond of the LOL or that emoji with the hands on the face. How much coverage would a presidential tweet about an intentional act from Kellyanne Conway get? Remember back in the 1980s when, in the midst of the Cold War, Ronald Reagan would assure us that we could sleep well at night because he clearly did. If he wasn’t especially worried, and he wasn’t looking harried the way his predecessor did, surely we could sleep well? After all, resting and relaxing were a part of life, even during the Cold War. He smiled, he waved and he had everything under control, offering an easy laugh during tough times. Trump has reason to smile. No matter what The New York Times,

CNN or other news organizations he hates write about him, the stock market loves his laissez-faire policies toward business and regulations. But Trump doesn’t seem pleased or to be riding a wave of good feelings and good humor. He needs to laugh with us as much as we need to laugh with each other. Of course, he needs to do his job, take his responsibilities seriously and do what he can to deliver on his promises. After all, even the world-is-coming-to-anend New York Times would have to write about more jobs and greater prosperity for America. Maybe, along the way, though, we could all use a good group giggle. The TV programmers understood the value of a guffaw long ago. They put talk show hosts on late at night because that’s when we need to chuckle the most, before we go to bed. Seinfeld, the cast of “Friends,” and many of our former acquaintances from sitcoms offer a comforting shield against the worries, anxieties and frowns that pester us during the day.

to enable him at least to see better. “You’d be howling, too, if you couldn’t see or hear,” they argue. Of course they have a point. But I am afraid, afraid of what Teddy’s reaction to the anesthetic might be, afraid to send him to a place of unfamiliarity, afraid to subject him to invasive procedure. To further complicate the picture, he has had a seizure. We saw the whole thing. It happened only 10 minutes after the last of our dinner company had left a few weeks ago. He was laying down on his side in his familiar station near the front door when suddenly his legs started flailing at the air, he began panting and saliva started to bubble from his mouth. All we could do was look on in horror for the short time that it lasted. When it was over he became uncharacteristically aggressive for a couple of minutes. Then his breathing slowly returned to normal, and he started walking from room to room. After perhaps 15 more minutes, while we watched with concern, he sauntered over to his food

bowl as if nothing had happened and began eating all his dinner, finishing up with a noisy slug of water. Finally he spun around, plopped down and looked at us as if to say, “Why are you following me?” We called the vet, who seemed much more sanguine than we were and assured us that this sometimes happens to pets, although it had not happened to any of our preceding three dogs. She put him on meds to prevent another seizure. What followed was a trial-and-error course of medication that alternately left Teddy so wobbly that he could barely step off the porch and caused him to sleep constantly, or wound him up so that he howled intermittently through the night, needing reassurance each time that we were there. It was like having a newborn baby in the house demanding multiple feedings. We’ve finally gotten the right medicines to the right level and life is almost back to normal, but the questions remain: What to do next, and when to do it?

A pet owner’s quandary

A

ging isn’t for sissies. We’ve all heard that line before and it also applies to our pets, our cats and dogs, our horses and so forth. Teddy is our only pet, a golden retriever with a square head, a pug nose, expressive brown eyes and an affable disposition. He has lived with us since he was 8 weeks, and in June he will turn 12. It’s hard for us to see him getting old. He is totally deaf now and only knows we are there when we touch him. By Leah S. Dunaief Then he will be startled as he whips his head around to see us and slowly wags his tail as if to say, “Oh, I know you, I’m safe with you.” He has serious cataracts that interfere with

Between you and me

his vision, and he is beginning to bump into the corners of furniture. He’s gone white around his muzzle, although the changeover from light blond isn’t so dramatic. And while he still can find his way back to the front door after he’s gone out, he occasionally wanders aimlessly inside the house. Sometimes he just sits and stares at a wall. Yet most of the time, he is his usual self, putting his head in each of our laps in turn as we sit in the living room and nuzzling us with love. Worst of all, for no reason we can discern, he will begin a chorus of howling. It’s a curious chain of sounds, starting at a high pitch and dropping down until it is wolverine, coming from deep in his throat. He throws his head back when he howls, much like the wolves I saw in the Oregon Zoo in Portland. Maybe it’s the equivalent of a primordial scream, or maybe he is communing with his ancestors, telling them he is on his way. It brings us to tears. My sons tell me we should have cataract surgery for him on one eye
