Echo Avenue in Sound Beach is getting a makeover. Brookhaven Town officials presented plans for a revitalization project along the busy street at the Sound Beach Civic Association meeting on Monday. Handicap-accessible sidewalks, new curbs, decorative lighting and ornamental trees are set to line the approximate .3-mile stretch between New York Avenue and North Country Road in the near future, as leaders seek to beautify and make the area safer for pedestrians. Old meets new at Miller Place’s reLove Amanda Stein’s refurbished home décor shop opens By Julianne CuBa

Miller Place is getting some extra love this spring with the opening of Long Island native Amanda Stein’s shop, reLove, paint boutique. The store, located at 87 North Country Road in Miller Place, held its grand opening on April 11 and features Stein’s own refurbished and painted furniture, along with home décor and homemade jewelry from other local artists, as well as CeCe Caldwell’s Paints, an eco-friendly line of natural chalk and clay paints. Miller Place residents may recognize Stein’s work from Facebook, as the wife and mother started posting pictures of her original furniture and custom-painted signs on the social media site about a year ago. Stein, who has lived in Miller Place for about a year and a half, said her love of interior design stems from her grandmother, who collected antiques, and that she began painting furniture after she moved out of her parents’ house. After leaving her career in real estate to look after her two children — Ella, 5, and Adam Jr., 4 — Stein said she wanted to take her passion and

turn it into a business. “It was one year ago that I started reLove from my house as a stay-at-home mom,” she said. “I always painted furniture for years and years, and all my friends kept telling me I should sell it. So I started with a Facebook page. It was literally overnight [that] it took off.” Stein said she started the page with

just seven pieces of furniture, but that number quickly grew as she began marketing all over social media. Within a few months, Stein said she was getting booked with custom jobs and selling out of her furniture and signs. “I did all of this from my two-car garage,” she added in an email.

Historic home reopens

The tours, which are offered at 172 Hallock Landing Road on Saturdays from April through December, 1 to 3 p.m., showcase 15 rooms with information from the 1700s through the 20th century. One of the rooms focuses on radio history, Aurucci-Stiefel said. The famed RCA Corp., headed by David Sarnoff and based in New York City, had a radio transmitting station in the hamlet. “We’re proud to feature Rocky Point’s history in this house,” Aurucci-Stiefel said. “Each room features original artifacts and photograph collections.” — Julianne Cuba

After being closed for the winter, tours have resumed at the Noah Hallock Homestead in Rocky Point, on Hallock Landing Road. The Rocky Point Historical Society acquired the property two years ago. Noah Hallock built the homestead in 1721 and eight generations of his descendants lived in the house until 1964, said Natalie Aurucci-Stiefel, president of the historical society. Noah and his wife, Bethia, had three sons: Noah II, Josiah and William. All three sons were born in the house their father built and served in the military as Patriots during the Revolutionary War. The elder Noah, who died in 1773 at age 77, was buried beside his wife, who died in 1766, in the family’s cemetery, located on a hill behind the homestead. Bethia’s grave is the oldest in the Hallock family cemetery. In 1964, another local family purchased the home, and lived there for

Teaming up to reduce teen driving fatalities Rocky Point High School’s SADD Club is working to reduce the number of teen driving-related crashes and save lives through its participation in the “Teen Crashes GTG” campaign. The school kicked off its participation in the campaign by creating slogans that promoted safe teen driving and chalked them onto the high school walkway. During the week, students attended an assembly on the dangers of drunk driving presented by Suffolk County Assis-

The Brookhaven town board presented certificates of congratulations to the 2014 members of the year, outgoing officers and members with years of service milestones, including former town Councilman Gene Gerrard who was honored for his 50 years of dedicated service to the department.

“I thank the members of the Mount Sinai fire department for their years of faithful service to the community,” Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) said. “These dedicated fire fighters put their lives on the line every day and I thank them for the sacrifices they make to keep us safe.” Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said, “I especially want to congratulate and thank former Councilman Gene Gerrard for his many years of service to the Mount Sinai community and the Town of Brookhaven.”

FJC’s Got Mail

Second-grade students in Jan Pilkington-Kaler and Cheryl Fusco’s class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School learned about the postal service industry and world locations in a fun, interactive way this spring. As part of the unit on mail and maps, the class received letters, packages and postcards from around the world. The

students used the information located on and within the packages as they explored the postal service, letter writing process, proper way to address envelopes and the world’s geography. To visually represent their research, the students charted, tallied and graphed where the mail was from on a large display outside their classroom.

The Mount Sinai girls’ lacrosse team finished an undefeated season in Division II with a 10-5 win over Rocky Point Saturday, while also squashing the Eagles’ hopes of a postseason appearance. Rocky Point led by two early on, but the Mount Sinai Mustangs rallied and continued to answer back until the team took control of the game to earn a firstround bye with a 15-1 overall mark and 14-0 conference showing. “We lost a nonleague game to St Anthony’s earlier [in the season], and with a playoff loss last season, we’ve only lost two games in the last three years,” Mount Sinai head coach Al Bertolone said. “Right now, there’s a culture that’s developed. They really believe in themselves, they believe in the plan and I’ve got winners in each grade level, so every year, the next group has taken over.” The Mustangs struck first when senior co-captain Kasey Mitchell found the back of the cage 30 seconds in to get her team on the scoreboard. Rocky Point freshman Madison Sanchez answered back three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, and Rocky Point eighth-grader Brianna Carrasquillo scored the next two goals. First she snagged a rebound off the pipe from a penalty attempt and buried her

shot to retake the lead, and fired again five minutes later for the score with an assist from sophomore attack Christina Ferrara, to put her team out in front, 3-1. “We really should have focused on the ground balls and the draws,” Carrasquillo said. “Our offense was good early on, but we needed to continue that.” Mount Sinai’s Pirreca rocketed a shot between the pipes, and freshman attack Meaghan Tyrrell found the back of the cage next to retie the game, 3-3. Mount Sinai continued to score, and this time, it was senior Jessica Demeo’s turn. She scored off an assist from Mitchell, but the lead didn’t last for long, as Rocky Point’s Brianna Lamereux sent her shot home with 7:57 left in the first to bring the score to 4-4. Mount Sinai freshman Camryn Harloff answered the call to put her team out front 5-4, and give the team an advantage that would last for the rest of the game. With 25 seconds left in the half, Mitchell fired a shot from the right side that hit the back of the net and gave her team a 6-4 lead heading into the halftime break. “We knew they were going to play a full 50 minutes — they’re a complete team and it’s no accident that they’re number one in the league,” Rocky Point head coach Dan Spallina said. “They’ve got great leadership; just look at the talent they have up and down their roster.” Seven minutes into the second half, Demeo scored again for her second goal of the game. According to Rocky Point’s Sanchez, in order to have a chance against a powerhouse like Mount Sinai, her team would

had to contain two of the team’s top players. “We knew about Sydney Pirreca and Kasey Mitchell, and in order to win, we had to stop them,” she said. “But we couldn’t.” Pirreca hit the scoreboard next off an assist from Tyrrell to surge ahead 8-4 with 12 minutes left to play, and Demeo split the pipes for her hat trick goal, to put her team out front 9-4 with just under 11 minutes left. “It’s all about team chemistry,” Demeo said. “As good as the players are that we have [individually], the only thing that matters is the team. We do so much together off the lacrosse field and that really makes us better.” Rocky Point wouldn’t go quietly, and freshman Christina Bellissimo found the net to trim the deficit to 9-5. Pirreca shot the ball to the back of the cage a final time for a hat trick of her own, and put the game away, 10-5. From there, Mount Sinai burned time off the clock until the game was over. As the No. 1 seed, the Mustangs will open the postseason at home on Wednesday May 20. Pirreca said her team will continue to do what it’s done all season, which she credits as the reason why her team went undefeated. “[We] work hard and we work as a team,”

The public is welcome to attend and share the day with all of the volunteers who join in honoring the veterans for this Memorial Day Event. Flags will be placed between 9:30-10:30 am. Volunteers and the public are welcome to attend the Patriotic Ceremony that will begin at 11:00 am in the Cemetery Assembly Area. Each branch of the U.S. Military will be attending and will take part in the ceremony. Weather permitting there will be a fly over at 11:30 am. Light refreshments will be served in the Cemetery Assembly Area. Fred Bryant feels even more personally involved with the event this year as he explains, “My son Frederick Bryant Jr. recently honorably discharged as a U.S. Army Ranger. Fred was awarded the Bronze star for his service in Afghanistan. He followed in the footsteps of my father, Art, a veteran of WWII. I am proud and overwhelmed by his commitment.”

For its opening weekend, reLove offered free paint samples to everyone who came in and a $50 dollar raffle for the store. “A couple of people took the [paint] samples home and they immediately painted a piece of furniture with it and sent me pictures of the furniture they painted, which was very cool,” Stein said. Dolores Spyowicz, of Country Charm in NYC, who has items for sale at the shop, said she met Stein through a painting group on Facebook and the two became good friends. She said reLove’s owner is a hard worker with a “beautiful vision.” “I thought that being in a store in such a wonderful, beautiful neighborhood,

my pieces would get more attention, and I’d be helping her out as well,” Spyowicz said. “I just thought it would be a wonderful opportunity.” In addition to being a “one-stop shop” for customers who paint and refurnish furniture, Stein said reLove will host several workshops — from painting basics to parent and child craft nights to bride’s night out. Stein also said reLove will maintain an eco-friendly and socially responsible business. “It’s all eco-friendly,” she said. “The paint line that I sell, there are absolutely no chemicals in the paint.” Stein said she’s thrilled to be following her dream as a business owner in beautiful and historic Miller Place. “It’s been a wonderful thing because I’ve had a lot of positive feedback.”

Praise for taking action now

still a complex issue, and we commend our representatives for not just standing by. The Suffolk County Legislature unanimously approved a pilot program on Tuesday that would provide 30 new GPS tracking devices for family court judges to assign to offenders with an order of protection against them. The program would also allow victims of domestic violence — if they so choose — to wear their own tracking devices so they may be alerted if an offender is near them. The legislation is the latest brought forth by Legislator Kara Hahn (DSetauket) and continues to strengthen county laws relating to domestic violence. While some may question the use of tracking devices, giving the discretion to judges allows us to evaluate each case on an individual basis. That would hopefully limit the GPS system to the most dangerous of-

If you haven’t yet read The Post and Courier’s “Till death do us part” series of stories on domestic violence in South Carolina, which won a Pulitzer Prize this year, you should. The opening paragraph sets the tone for the series with a shocking statistic: “More than 300 women were shot, stabbed, strangled, beaten, bludgeoned or burned to death over the past decade by men in South Carolina, dying at a rate of one every 12 days while the state does little to stem the carnage from domestic abuse.” It goes on to say that while “state officials have long lamented the high death toll for women, lawmakers have put little money into prevention programs and have resisted efforts to toughen penalties for abusers.” The piece is both disturbing and eye-opening, and while South Carolina is different from both New York and the smaller communities of Suffolk County, domestic violence is

fenders and prevent us from violating anyone’s constitutional rights. And 30 devices is a small number when looking at the bigger picture — in 2013, there were more than 1,500 violations of orders of protection in

Suffolk County. If assigned appropriately, carefully and conservatively, the devices could help give domestic violence victims a new sense of safety and freedom to live their lives.

A call for more investment in scientific research

ruce Stillman is still very determined even if he sounds frustrated. I interviewed the CEO of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory last week when the research institution released, for the first time, a set of numbers indicating the positive economic impact of CSHL on Long Island. While proud of an institution that has produced eight Nobel Prize winners, Stillman sounded a theme I hear regu-

larly when I interview scientists at CSHL, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University: The country isn’t investing enough in research. “The reduction in federal funding means we do have to support the institution through philanthropy more than we’ve been doing in the past,” Stillman said. “Hopefully, Congress will realize they should reverse the dramatic reduction in funding in the federal budgets. It doesn’t make any sense.” Indeed, investments in research around the country make sense on many levels. For starters, many of us have unfortunate direct experience with a deadly disease like cancer, which slowly tears through a person’s body. We have also witnessed friends who have demonstrated spectacular courage and determination in the face of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or other neurodegenerative diseases. Inspired by our friends and neighbors, we walk, run or do triathlons and we spend time in church, synagogues and mosques

praying for them and for strangers battling the same affliction. Scientists aren’t just looking for ways to lessen the symptoms or ease the pain — they’re also working to find signs of the disease before they appear. Angelina Jolie raised awareness of the potential benefits of preventing problems when she elected to have several surgeries. As their doctors would rush to tell them, people shouldn’t have surgeries just because a famous actress did. Places like CSHL can provide the kind of knowledge that provides information that empowers informed decisions. “There’s a lot of misinformation on the Internet,” Stillman said. “What the scientific community is trying to do is to make sure the information about genomics and medicine is correct and [people aren’t relying on information] out there that is misleading.” Beyond the applied science part, however, researchers who are doing basic science often wind up making critical discoveries. By only funding those

projects that might have a direct impact on human health, can and will be too self-limiting. What we learn can and often does help us. On the other side of that scale, what we don’t know can’t have any impact. And then there’s the financial benefit. Research often has a multiplier effect, creating jobs, bringing in revenue and supporting the local economy. “Everybody knows, including politicians, that science is an economic driver,” Stillman said. “If you take away public research funding, you’re basically giving up.” Stillman said that what’s gone on in the last 15 years in the United States “bucks the trend since World War II, when the U.S. was invested and was a world leader in research.” Stillman himself, who was born in Australia, has won numerous awards and runs his own DNA lab, said he came to this country because of American leadership in research, but now “things are changing rapidly. People like me will not come to

I don’t know about you, but as soon as the weather turns beautiful, my dearest friends shake the winter cobwebs out of their systems and call to see if they can visit. The number of calls increases with the rising temperature as we move into summer. I only slightly attribute that to my scintillating personality. I know the real impetus for visiting

is this beautiful place we live in. They all have bona fide reasons to come here. They have meetings, conferences, cultural events, doctor appointments, dentist appointments and so forth that bring them out from the big city or from other states, or even from the other coast. In the meantime, they get to enjoy the shoreline, the beaches, the docks, and the shops, restaurants and art galleries in the villages, and I get to enjoy them. They all bring me something. And I’m not talking about the candy, flowers or wine that are house gifts. They bring me stories about their lives in other places, about their children’s successes and their grandchildren’s brilliance. They bring me news of friends we have in common, so I can catch up on who is doing what. They bring me memories of places and events we’ve shared, for they are usually longtime friends and, therefore, witnesses to my life. And they bring me laughter about outrageous mo-

ments we have known and tears for those whom we have lost. Most knew my husband, even my father and mother and my brother and sister, all of whom are long gone from this world but who live on in our recollections and in the stories we exchange. And we worry together over friends who are not doing so well and about each other. We also plan for the future: plays we will get tickets for, meals we will share, museum exhibits that are not to be missed, concerts we will hear, perhaps even trips we will take together. At this time in our lives, we are free enough of familial responsibilities to dare make such plans. We talk of books we have read, movies we have enjoyed, and experiences we recommend. In so doing, we broaden each other’s lives. We even exchange the names and symbols of equities we have heard promising forecasts about and interesting personal interviews we have caught on television. We are often fear-

As the day goes on, we might even lay bare some of our worries or shortcomings, offering encouragement to each other in the process, recalling triumphs that belie the worries. We might share recipes, including the men among us, and we brag about all the vegetables we have eaten in the previous 24 hours and how we cooked them. They share stories about other friends, eventually introducing them and broadening our circle. Each newcomer brings some of the same interests, but also new subjects we might never have thought about, much less learned

How do I know that? My father grew up on a dairy farm and shared that vital information with me, explaining how I could distinguish a Guernsey from a Jersey cow, which comes from another of the Channel Islands.
