Nicholas Corleto has worked in the Miller Place School District since 2010 as a high school Chemistry Teacher. He is known as a great motivator of students, inspiring them to always strive for new heights in their studies and in life. One of Mr. Corleto’s professional highlights with the district was his development of a groundbreaking scientific computing course with Brookhaven National Lab to introduce students to the fundamental mathemat ical and computer programming techniques employed by scientists, using programming examples from scientists at Brookhaven National Labs. Mr. Corleto is a veteran who has served as a reservist in the United States Air Force, giving support during Operation Endur ing Freedom and Operation Noble Eagle.

Matt Nicoletti grew up in the Miller Place community and is a 2007 graduate of Miller Place High School. He studied English Education at SUNY Oneonta and spent his summers at Eastern Suffolk BOCES as a Teacher’s Assistant for students with special needs. Upon graduating college, Mr. Nicoletti returned to Miller Place to assume a temporary district position, which led to his full-time district employment the following year. Over the decade of his career with us, Mr. Nicoletti has earned the respect and admiration of his students and faculty colleagues. This past year, Mr. Nicoletti was a driving force in the fundraising efforts to build the Chris Prendergast Memorial Garden at North Country Road Middle School. A man of many talents and interests, Mr. Nicoletti also directed the MPHS drama production this past year.

These talented individuals have already made significant impacts on Miller Place stu dents and the Miller Place/Sound Beach communities. They bring with them a wealth of experience, great enthusiasm and long-standing relationships with our students and staff that will allow them to seamlessly move into their new roles.

Diana Tufaro has been part of the Miller Place School District for over 14 years, begin ning her tenure in the District as an AIS and Special Education Teacher at Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School. After earning her Master’s degree in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages), Ms. Tufaro became the District’s ENL Teacher, serving our ELL population in all four buildings. She was appointed as the Dean of Students at Miller Place High School in 2016, after completing her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. As an administrator, Ms. Tufaro has provided professional development to her colleagues, has served as a member on several school-based committees, and has been an adviser to the National Honor Society, Yearbook and Student Government clubs. Ms. Tufa ro is a member of New York State Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, the New York State Association for Bilingual Education and the New York State Association of World Language Administrators.

Evan Curran began teaching in Miller Place in 2007. He has been a fourth and fifth grade teacher during his 15 years at Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School and was ap pointed as the K-5 STEAM Lead Teacher in 2018. Mr. Curran was named a New York State STEM Master Teacher in 2019. During his time at LADSBS, he has served on the School Improvement Team, written elementary math curriculum, and presented multiple local and statewide professional development sessions on the Best Practices for Classroom Instruc tion. Mr. Curran has served on statewide committees to write content for the New York State Math Assessments, while also serving as a regional scoring leader. Mr. Curran started the Math Olympiad program at LADSBS in 2015, launched the first Miller Place STEAM Night in 2017, and, last year, organized the first Virtual Suffolk County Math Tournament for 30 schools across Suffolk County.

Search engines, data analytics and effective profiles are just a few terms social media companies use when collecting our personal data for targeted advertisements. The days of newspaper advertisements, TV commercials and door-to-door sales are fading. The new form of marketing, used by social media platforms to mine our data, is putting our personal information at risk of identity theft and other forms of cybercrime.

My daughter recently had her Instagram account hacked. It took over a month to resolve the issue. In that time the hackers stole her personal information and used it to sell cryptocurrency. Many social media users are being extorted by hackers to pay ransom money to get their accounts back. In Newsday’s recent interview with Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison, he highlighted an important part of

And currently, Suffolk County is in the midst of a data breach that has closed down all county computerCybermedianetworking. titans, including the billionaire owners of Google, YouTube, Waze, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, need to be held accountable when it comes to protecting the public. Consumers may seem like grains of sand in their datamining operations, but there needs to be limits on how much information a company can mine. California, Maine and the European Union have instituted restrictions on data mining, including opting in when asked for a person’s personal data to be sold to a third party instead of automatically having one’s personal information be taken. It’s time New York State does the same.

TBR News Media’s Police Blotter has been temporarily suspended due to a possible cyber intrusion to the Suffolk County government website that supplies us with the latest police incidents. A spokeswoman for Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said the system will remain offline while they verify and assess the ongoing situation. We hope to be back next week.

As we transition to this cyber form of marketing, the question needs to be asked: “Who is protecting our personal information?”Shouldwe be concerned that Apple admitted to listening in on conversations, which they say was due to accidental triggers mainly on Apple pods and watches; or the increase in impulse buying due to analytic target marketing; or the issue of our information ending up on the dark web due to the proliferation of data mining; or the cyber scams targeting senior citizens; or perhaps the recent call from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores, due to security concerns with China and the recent discovery that the app tracks every keystroke made by its users including passwords and credit card numbers? The problem is that not enough is being done to protect our personal data. Social media platforms need to be more accountable in protecting our privacy, especially when it comes to cybercrime targeting our children.

In a recent letter to state Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), I expressed my concerns with the issue of data privacy and social media platforms. As we have experienced with the opioid epidemic crisis, if big corporations and government don’t work together to protect consumers, it can have a devastating effect.

With an unrestrained focus on accumulating our information including our name, address, phone number, email address, age, birthday, occupation, where you shop, etc., media platforms continue to mine our data to sell to third party companies that influence our day-to-day decisions on the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the car we buy and more.

Schaefer also presented a map that loosely follows the proposal of Coram resident Logan Mazer. On the whole, the Mazer map was viewed favorably during the public hearings. However, this proposal was ultimately shot down by another 3-5 vote, with the same committee members voting for and against it.

There is still an opportunity to stand up and ﬁght to keep our communities together. Redistricting affects political power, what issues policy and lawmakers prioritize, and whether issues affecting our diverse communities are represented or excluded. When those responsible for drawing district maps do so to favor one political party, the potential for fair representation suffers. We must take action to keep together our communities in Stony Brook, the Setaukets, Port Jefferson Station, Terryville, Port Jefferson and other villages together as they are now.

The Republican proposal literally tears apart the 5th Legislative District as we know it, separating it into three different county legislative districts. Stony Brook and western Setauket would be shifted from the 5th to the 13th District, represented by Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga); the southern portion of the district would be shifted to the 4th District represented by Legislator Nick Caracappa (R-Selden); and the eastern portion of the district including portions of Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station would shift into the 6th District which extends to Wading River, and is currently represented by Sarah Anker

Following a contentious virtual meeting on Monday, Sept. 12, the Brookhaven Redistricting Committee failed to reach a compromise on a proposed map, sending the redistricting process to the Brookhaven Town Council.

The committee voted on three maps during the meeting, none of which received the six votes necessary to adopt an ofﬁcial proposal. There was signiﬁcant controversy leading up to this meeting. Despite this, all eight members and the committee’s mapmaker, David Schaefer, were present.

I am a member of the knighted Mick JaggerElton John-Paul McCartney generation (where did I go wrong?). It was Jagger who summarized our thoughts when he tweeted, “For my whole life Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, has always been there.” And now she isn’t. The second Elizabethan era is over.

The new King Charles III, her son aged 73, caught the moment when he said in a statement, “I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

What of King Charles III, who represents continuity and has made a promising start to his reign. An often unfairly misunderstood man, he has been ahead of his time on environmental matters, wildlife preservation and climate change. His views on architecture were more controversial if personal. On a different level, his image was severely dented by the disastrous marriage to Diana, with whom he had William — now heir to the throne as Prince of Wales — and current-U.S. resident Harry. Charles married longtime flame Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005 and she is now queen consort. Time has gradually healed the British public’s disdain toward them both.

It was like a “JFK” or “9/11” rememberwhere-you-were moment when the news broke Thursday, just after 1:30 p.m. EST: “Queen Elizabeth II has died.” For this Brit expat, it was a big shock even though she was 96 years old. Only two days before, she had held the “kissing the hands” ceremony with new prime minister, Liz Truss (C).

Still, as President Joe Biden (D) and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement, “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was more than a monarch. She defined an era.”

The queen’s death Sept. 8 in Balmoral, Scotland, has been covered extensively by the media. Briefly, she was born in Mayfair, London, on April 21, 1926; married Philip, Duke of Edinburgh — her pillar of strength — on Nov. 20, 1947; became queen of the U.K. and other Commonwealth realms on Feb. 6, 1952, also head of the Church of England; was a working mother with four children including Charles; and owned a string of corgi dogs and racehorses through the years.

I saw her in person twice, both during my management spells at Midland Bank, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, in the 1970s and ‘80s. The first occasion was when she visited the neighboring headquarters of the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind. Imagine my surprise when I was walking to my car after work and, with nobody else around, she passed by me in the royal vehicle with no motorcade or security guards in sight. I swear she gave a little regal wave. The next time was when she presented prizes at the South of England Show in Ardingly, where the bank’s meet-and-greet pavilion gave us a ringside view. There was a majestic aura that seeped from her as she beguiled everybody at the agricultural showground — as she did elsewhere in a long lifetime of public service.

It is not widely appreciated that Charles founded the Prince’s Trust. For a while I was a trust business counselor in Ashford, Kent, and can attest to the value of the scheme for young entrepreneurs. Another factoid is that he has been patron of The Goon Show Preservation Society. Personal reflections? My first big memory was in relation to the death of Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, in 1952 while she was on a trip to Kenya, East Africa. I was in Mrs. Vidler’s class at Polegate Primary School, East Sussex, and you could hear the proverbial pin drop when we were told “the king is dead.” A dark February Wednesday morning became even darker. In our childhood grief, we had no idea nor cared that the queen’s first prime minister was Winston Churchill. She was only 25 when ascending the throne.

The coronation did not take place until June 2, 1953, but what a glorious affair it was with celebrations in every city, town and village. Some 20 million viewers were able to watch the glittering, expensive ceremony from Westminster Abbey live on television, with many households — including ours — buying their first TVs, in

The fire department invited community members, firefighters from neighboring towns and Rocky Point High School student-musicians for an evening of solemn remembrance of the lives lost 21 years ago.

Throughout the evening RPFD firefighters, including Chief of Department Fred Hess, took to the podium to thank the attendees for their support. In their speeches, they expressed gratitude and admiration for the many servicemen, servicewomen and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice on that tragic day in history.

To mark the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Rocky Point Fire Department held a commemorative ceremony at its dedicated 9/11 Memorial Garden on the evening of Sept. 11.

It has been touching to have received from local friends “deepest and sincere condolences” for my loss as though I was a member of the Royal Family myself. A mark, I know, of the respect held here for Queen Elizabeth II, the Anglophile feelings she generated and an acknowledgment of what being British means to me.

Night of the Proms, Prime Minister’s Questions, meeting Princess Diana, being able to travel anywhere in the world where my origins, language and culture are at the minimum accepted and respected, not having to know the names of those appointed on merit from within the judiciary to serve on the nation’s Supreme Court, ﬁsh and chips, compassion never better expressed than by Ralph McTell’s brilliant comment on homelessness in “Streets of London,” a respect for history and its anachronistic imposition of a system of government where the head of state has been loved and respected by all. Finally, and above all else for all of my life — Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, acknowledged simply as “The Queen” throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the world.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear: I am a registered Independent, having no allegiance to either the Republican or Democratic parties. What I do stand for is the truth.

Her letter of Sept. 8, [“Biden fails at uniting nation”] was wrongheaded, and clearly misunderstands what he said. The president accused only MAGA Republicans of being a danger to democracy, not all Republicans. As a Brit with 42 years on the clock in the U.S., I have become used to those looking on me with bemusement or suspicion for not taking citizenship but tolerated for my strange British sense of humor nevertheless.

What does it mean to have a representative voice in government? What is an equitable distribution of public resources? How and where should we build, and to what end?

If trying to bully the vice president, Mike Pence [R], to violate the Constitution and decertify the vote of the Electoral College, I don’t know what is. If refusing to concede an election President Donald Trump [R] knew he lost isn’t anti-democratic, I don’t know what is. If broadcasting the Big Lie that the election was stolen isn’t anti-democratic, I don’t know what is. If instigating an insurrection designed to intimidate Congress into decertifying the election isn’t antidemocratic, I don’t know what is.

Numerous problems plague our policymakers in Washington, from national security, economic uncertainty, immigration policy, among many others. In the face of these seemingly unanswerable questions, we must remember that all politics is local. It is hard to believe that Susan Kerr and I heard the same speech by President [Joe] Biden [D].

I ﬁnd it appalling that Ms. Kerr, or anyone, misquotes or misrepresents what was actually said during the president’s speech. He speciﬁcally referred to MAGA Republicans as extremists and further stated, “Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans” represent MAGANowhereideals.in his entire speech did the president refer to, as quoted by Ms. Kerr, that “all Republicans of being prone to Bidenviolence.”askedthat the American people join in the defense of our democracy, our Constitution and the rule of law.

The ongoing intimidation of election officials by MAGA militias is reminiscent of the Brown Shirts of the early 1930s in Germany, and is a clear danger to democracy. Yes, our democracy is in grave danger brought about by one man and his MAGA enablers.Itistragic that the once-invaluable Republican Party has mostly supported this man. Instead of trying to deal with the real causes of dissatisfaction that have fueled the MAGA movement, most of the Republican Party has pandered to it while giving tax cuts to the rich. Millions of good Americans have been duped by this conman, who has done nothing to deal with their real pain. Now the very democracy which we celebrate and on which we all depend is threatened.

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden (D) and former President Donald Trump (R) presented disparate visions for the American future. Despite diametrically opposing messages, one theme uniﬁes these speeches: Americans stand at a crossroads in our history, and our trajectory is undecided.

In time, we will accumulate small wins. This formula can be scaled, meaning we can soon apply our takeaways from local politics to the higher levels of government.

On a national stage, two U.S presidents are in a tug-ofwar for the soul of our nation.

After a night filled with an early June rain in 1953, Evans and his brother awaited the moment to see the queen, whose coronation occurred 16 months after she became queen.

“What a remarkable lady she had been,” Gillian Evans added. “She said she would give herself to the nation for as long as she lived, and she did. Right up to the very, very last, which is wonderful.”

The Evans matriarch, 83, who is a retired diagnostic radiographer, is amazed at the effect the queen’s death is having on residents.

“It’s very alarming and tells you that something is odd,” Evans said.

“She had a really bad time when Princess Diana was killed,” said Philip Evans, who retired in 2000 as a general surgeon. “She was just pulled down by the power of the press. In legalese, ‘she was badly advised.’”

During the Platinum Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate the monarch’s 70 years on the throne, Clary Evans, a radiation oncologist who works at Northwell Health, her husband Tobias Janowitz, a scientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and their families got together with another English family to mark the occasion.

Now this person is not easy to find. In fact, there must be several unsuccessful trials before Mr. Right comes along. Ask your neighbors, your friends, your cousin, the hardware store, anyone who might help with a referral, but they may not want to share. Good luck!

Another memory involves my husband and me, shortly after we were married and had moved into our first apartment. Of course, we made noises, too, and otherwise let our presence be known. That was apartment living and somehow, we all survived it.

Gillian Evans, meanwhile, traveled with her family to visit her aunt, who, at the time, was the only one in her family who owned a television.

But unlike in the service, there was no one to call who would cheerfully arrive, fix the problem, then wish us a good day and leave. Oh, we could summon repair people to come, but when they left, we were less than cheerful. They had each gone off with a large chunk of our disposable income.
