North Shore native ready to ‘ruin’ truTV Shoreham-Wading River theater program helps propel Smithtown-born resident to very own television series By Giselle Barkley

Adam Conover never used to ruin anything. More than one year later, that is exactly what Conover will do every Tuesday during “Adam Ruins Everything,” a new show on truTV. Conover, a Smithtown native who grew up on the North Shore, hosts the comedy show, which blends comedy, history and science to entertain and enlighten viewers about common misconceptions in society. The show touches upon various topics including giving, security, crime scene investigations, childhood, sex and more. His first episode covers giving and touches upon the history of engagement rings, why shoe companies that give away free shoes are harmful and the reality of food pantries. But for Conover, creating a show wasn’t something he just set out to do. Everything simply fell into place. Once Conover reached middle school and high school, he became more interested in drama and theater. His mother, Stony Brook

native Margaret Conover, said she remembers her son being a handful as a child, saying that it was hard to keep him focused on a task. But his Shoreham-Wading River High School’s theater program was one of the few things that grabbed and maintained his attention. Conover got his first acting break after a teacher selected him for one of the star roles in the school’s production of “The Clumsy Custard Horror Show.” Conover, who now lives in Los Angeles, said his overall experience in his high school’s theater program made an impression on him as it gave him a glimpse into working in a performing arts career. “I think the biggest thing I took out of it was that ... it was like a real theater program,” Conover said in a phone interview. “We’re not just kids putting on a show. We are putting on a real show with a real audience that has expectations and the show has to be good.” Adam Conover’s father, David Conover, of Stony Brook, said he remembers his son TRUTV continued on page a5

Skygazers are in for a special treat this weekend — for the first time in 33 years, there will be a supermoon eclipse. A supermoon occurs when a full moon reaches the point in its orbit that is closest to Earth, known as its perigee, which happens a handful of times a year. The proximity — of about 222,000 miles — makes the moon look brighter, and it appears about 14 percent larger. The supermoon on Sept. 27 and 28 will coincide with a total lunar eclipse, which occurs when the moon passes through Earth’s shadow, covering its surface in a red tint. That red tint occurs because of the refraction of light through Earth’s atmosphere on its way to the moon. According to NASA, a supermoon eclipse is a rare event. It has happened only five times since the beginning of the 20th century — in 1910, 1928, 1946, 1964 and 1982 — and those who miss it this weekend will not have another chance to catch it until 2033. As a bonus, it will also be a harvest moon, which is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox on Sept. 23. On the East Coast, a partial eclipse will begin at 9:07 p.m. on Sept. 27, according to NASA, with the total eclipse beginning at 10:11 p.m. It will last a little

more than an hour before returning to a partial eclipse. The full event will end at 12:27 a.m. on Sept. 28. At the time the partial eclipse begins for New York viewers, the moon will be about 26 degrees above the horizon, in the east southeast direction. It will gradually move higher and southward in the sky, so that at the time the partial eclipse ends after midnight, the moon will be about 50 degrees above the horizon to the south. — Elana Glowatz

Centereach policeman is arrested for in hit-and-run By Phil Corso

A Suffolk County cop turned himself in this week after allegedly injuring a Nesconset motorcyclist in a hit-and-run crash in Ronkonkoma, authorities said. Detectives were investigating the Sunday night crash on Portion Road just east of Avenue B, where cops said 40-yearold Charles Giardinello’s motorcycle was struck by a westbound pickup truck trying to make a left turn into a parking lot around 7:23 p.m., before it fled the scene northbound on Avenue B. By Tuesday morning, Centereach native Thomas O’Neill, 44, submitted to the Suffolk County Police Department and was charged with leaving the scene of an inci-

dent resulting in serious physical injury — a class E felony. Giardinello, a Nesconset resident, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital after the crash and was listed in critical condition. O’Neill works as a Suffolk County Police Officer with the Community Response Bureau and has been with the department since 2003, earning $144,399 last year in salary and overtime, SCPD said in a statement. He was off duty at the time of the crash and was suspended without pay. He could not be reached for comment. Yacht club ships out name By Elana Glowatz

After almost 40 years on Port Jefferson Harbor, an area yacht club has changed its name. The Setauket Yacht Club will now formally be called Port Jefferson Yacht Club, paying tribute to the area that has been its home since 1977.

TBR

According to a press release from Port Jefferson Village, the yacht club’s members overwhelmingly approved the name change. The announcement came about a week ahead of the Village Cup Regatta, an annual boat race between the village and John T. Mather Memorial Hospital — in which the yacht club participates — which was held on Sept. 12 at Port Jefferson Harbor. “We have been a part of the Port Jeff community for many years and it was time for us to embrace our ties with the local residents, businesses and the wonderful harbor,” yacht club Commodore John Ciarelli said. “We feel a special bond to the village and wanted to reflect that in our name.” Since moving from Setauket to Port Jefferson, the club, which was founded in 1959, has been based on Surf Avenue Pass Way, behind the Port Jefferson Village Center off East Broadway. It offers a summer sailing program and services such as launches to moorings. According to the village press release, the renaming also coincides with a new type of membership program for special activities, aimed at people who need a place to store smaller watercraft like kayaks, canoes or paddle boards. “We want to be the portal for the enjoyment of the harbor for the greater

I like the fact that he doesn’t care about the cost of losing his votes if it’s an issue that’s very important to him if [his opinion] is unpopular.” Members of the museum said they agreed with Folk. Deirdre Doherty, director of development for the museum, said that Zeldin’s desire to improve the Long Island economy is not only genuine but will also assist businesses like the museum. “Museums go beyond just offering a cultural experience,” Doherty said. “They really have socially impactful programs. We educate over 12,000 students a year. So if the local businesses are healthy, then we can be healthy.” Regina Miano, special events manager of the museum, said she thought Zeldin’s event was also a good way for Three Villagers to interact with Zeldin saying, “it was great to have him as a new congressman … to be here and speak at the museum … to introduce himself to people that have probably never spoken to him, [it was great].” Zeldin also highlighted the importance of meet-and-greets with the voters such as these where residents can meet the political figures that are in charge of addressing their concerns and needs. “Accessibility is important because as an elected representative, constituents need to know that the person they elect to office is representing their passion,” Zeldin said in an interview before the breakfast. “At the same time the elected official needs to be out in the public to listen so that he or she is as tuned in as possible to the top priorities of people elected to serve.”

He’s new to D.C. but not to some of the North Shore’s most pressing issues. Representative Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) addressed people from Three Village businesses and organizations early Wednesday morning, Sept. 16, in his Meet Congressman Zeldin breakfast in the Gillespie meeting room in the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages. The meeting gave Zeldin the opportunity to discuss his past several months in office after he was sworn in back in January and to address issues he said he wants to tackle during his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Some of the more pressing issues, he said, included affordability, supporting local business owners and enhancing the quality of life for Long Islanders of the First Congressional District. “We’re losing a lot of our friends and our family as our families get split apart moving down to North Carolina and South Carolina and Florida because they can’t afford to get by here,” Zeldin said while discussing Long Island’s cost of living and its impact on community members. He added that some small business owners have experienced or are going through tough times as they struggle between paying their employees and paying their sales tax or other bills associated with their businesses. “There needs to be a fundamental recalibration and better understanding from different levels of government, as to how a small business is able to grow and create new jobs,” Zeldin said as a suggestion to help businesses stay afloat and create more jobs in the community. He admitted that one piece of legislation would not be enough to address every business owner’s concerns or needs. As he continued discussing businesses and Long Island’s economy, Zeldin also voiced his opinion on President Barack Obama’s (D) $15 minimum wage proposal, saying that the increase is not nearly sufficient for Long Island residents — especially those who own homes and raise their families. Long Island’s veteran population and education issues were also a topic of debate as Zeldin discussed his past eight months in Congress. One of Zeldin’s first pieces of legislation to pass kept the government from financially penalizing states if schools wanted to withdraw from the controversial Common Core Learning Standards. Throughout the breakfast, Zeldin emphasized that he is not the type of politician who will turn away from a difficult issue or decision. He acknowledged that making tough decisions may cost him votes, but he will support what he believes to be right for his community. The statement left those in attendance very pleased. “I really feel like he listens to the issues that are going on at hand,” said Elizabeth Folk, owner and licensed acupuncturist and massage therapist at Hand on Health and Wellness in Stony

OBITUARIES

Christopher Risotto Christopher Risotto, 39, lived for his family and friends. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for them, including making the ultimate sacrifice for his family on Aug. 29, in the face of a terrible disease. He was the loving husband of Kelly (Cantara); father of Abigail and Jacob; son of Dr. Thomas and Stephanie; brother of Thomas (Valerie) and Elizabeth (Cory); grandson of Marie Risotto and Ruth Sagerman; son-in-law of Bruce and Sandra Cantara; brother-in-law of Nicholas (Michelle) Cantara; and uncle of Brady, Cooper, Joshua, Joseph, Brian, Gabby, James and Christian. Risotto was loved by many more whose lives he forever touched and improved.

He was diagnosed this spring with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease some consider to be one of the most horrendous known to man. He fought as hard and long as he could. Now, his family continues the fight, in hopes that one day a diagnosis of ALS is not a death sentence. Please visit webgny.alsa.org/site/tr/ walks/greaternewyork to help fight for Risotto and others with ALS by donating to the ALS Association. The association funds research and clinical trials in search of a cure, and provides family and medical support for those battling ALS. Rocky Point High School freshman Bryant Michael Liu has been named one of 30 finalists in the 2015 Broadcom MASTERS middle school science competition and was the only honoree from Long Island. Liu will now compete in the final round in Silicon Valley, Calif., in early October. During this event, he will present his original research project to judges and the public, and will compete in hands-on STEM challenge activities with fellow finalists. Liu was selected for this honor based on his 2014-15 science fair project — The Effects of Pretreatment on the Release of Simple Sugars from Plant Fallen Leaves — which he completed as part of the middle school’s science research program last school year. Miller Place freshman forward Abbey Curcio races Centereach senior Karly Sauve for the ball.

One goal was all that kept the Miller Place girls’ soccer team from topping Centereach Tuesday in nonleague action, as the Panthers fell, 1-0. After some back-and-forth action and some saved shots by Miller Place senior goalkeeper and co-captain Danielle Bambola, Centereach senior forward Ryan Schubert was able to sneak one by her off a penalty kick that just crossed the line into the front left corner of the net. Momentum shifted the Cougars’ way after the goal, leading to more opportunities, but the team couldn’t capitalize, resulting in a 1-0 score after the first 40 minutes.

“In the first half, I obviously didn’t have as clean of a save as I should have, and it hurt us, but in the second half I wasn’t afraid of the adrenaline coming in,” Bambola said. “The first half we could’ve picked it up a little more, but in the second half we came out hard-working and determined. We might have lost, but it was a close game and we worked really hard.” Both teams pressed the defense and had multiple shots on goal, but it was a goalkeeper battle between Bambola and junior co-captain Annalie Buscarino, who made diving and jumping saves to keep the score unchanged. “We possessed pretty well,” Centereach sophomore sweeper Amanda Fabris said. “I think we stayed together well as a pack and filled in the gaps when we needed to.” Despite the loss, Miller Place freshman forward Abbey Curcio was proud of her team’s effort. “I think we can finish a little bit better,

Crafty ladies are such dolls By giSelle BArKley

The women of Crafters for a Cause usually help their students learn to paint, but this summer the ladies decided to help people outside of the classroom. Members Betty Baumach, Linda Hallock, Virginia “Jennie” Sweeney, Jane Del Prête, Kathy Sciacchitano and Martha Palermo recently donated a handmade dollhouse to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital to help fight breast cancer through its Fortunato Breast Health Center. The dollhouse will be raffled off at next year’s Families Walk & Run for Hope, an annual springtime fundraiser. The women started building the roughly 2-foot-tall dollhouse in June. According to Baumach, a Lake Grove resident who leads the group, which meets at the New Village Recreation Center in Centereach, the volunteers teach people various forms of painting year-round — except during the summer. “During the summer the teachers don’t teach,” Baumach said in a phone interview. “We still wanted to get together anyway so we said, ‘Oh, what could we do this summer to fill the time?’ so I suggested building a dollhouse.” Baumach got the idea to donate the house to the Port Jefferson hospital be-

cause she brought her sick aunt to Mather in the past. She had previously built five or six dollhouses, including this particular model of house, so drawing the plans was simple. Like all of Baumach’s dollhouse projects, it was made without a kit — the women designed and built each component by hand. Until it is raffled off, the dollhouse will reside in the office of Cindy Court, the hospital’s development coordinator. The eight-room house includes a living room, a dining room, a bedroom, a bathroom and a sewing room, among others. According to Court, the crafters

brought individual boxes of furniture to decorate the house the day they donated it to the hospital. “Each builder was responsible for decorating and furnishing one of the eight rooms,” Court said in an email. “They precisely [placed] each piece, down to the smallest detail.” The group didn’t plan on furnishing the dollhouse until Sweeney found furniture on sites like eBay and Craigslist. Baumach provided the materials to build the house and was responsible for its exterior. Court said the group used tongue depressors to make the roof shingles.

“I think it’s wonderful this group of women put so much time and love into this dollhouse and then donated it to Mather to help raise funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center,” Dr. Joseph Carrucciu, who specializes in radiology at the center, said in an email. While Crafters for a Cause enjoyed giving back to their community, it remains to be seen whether the dollhouse will become an annual effort. “I think this was a one-shot deal as far as dollhouses go,” Baumach said in a followup email interview. “But they are trying to convince me to do another next summer.”

but I we got a lot of good shots off,” Curcio said. “We just get unlucky sometimes. OPINION EDITORIAL

My deerest neighbors

At what point does a neighborhood nuisance become a problem that warrants lethal action? A few North Shore communities have been debating whether to legalize hunting deer in their residential areas, after complaints relating to an increase in their region’s deer population. Hunting advocates say the ticks deer carry have been transmitting Lyme disease to humans; the animals are eating their garden plants; and the deer are moving traffic hazards. As a result of the complaints, Huntington Town officials have given residents of Eaton’s Neck the green light — under certain restrictions — to hunt deer with longbows on their own properties. Officials in Belle Terre Village,

after receiving emotional pushback from many community members, did not take action on a similar proposed hunting law. The issue is still up in the air in Head of the Harbor, where officials recently floated a proposal to allow hunting there as well. There are many problems with allowing people to hunt deer in a residential location: It will not have the desired effect; it is an unreasonable and disproportionate response to nature; and there is great potential for negative consequences. It’s not a problem for nature to occur around Long Island, it’s merely a fact of life. We hear residents bemoan the loss of open space and cry out against development. Well, this isn’t “The Sims” life simulation video game — we can’t cherry pick the greenery and sprawling beaches, and kick out the deer. Or rather, we shouldn’t. There are nonlethal ways to patiently deal with the deer issue: Spray deer and tick repellant in your area; use tick repellant on yourself when you go out-

Communities across the North Shore are mulling over different ways to address an influx of deer.

side; check your body and clothes for ticks when you hang out in tall grass or woods; use plants that deer do not eat; and drive slowly on small back roads

that are surrounded by woods. Let’s not forget that hunting is dangerous in a residential area because accidents can — and do — happen.

National Voter Registration Day is a reminder to make sure the electorate participates in the democratic process.

Marr, Conron: The time to register for voting this November is now TO THE EdITOr: Tuesday, Sept. 22, was National Voter registration day, reminding those who are not registered to vote that they will need to have their registration form postmarked by Oct. 9 in order to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 3 elections. Absentee ballot applications must be postmarked by Oct. 27 and mailed to the Suffolk County Board of Elections at P.O. Box 700, Yaphank, NY 11980. Forms can be obtained at local libraries and post offices, or by calling the election board at 631-852-4500. does it make a difference if we don’t

vote? The state of New York was 49th — out of 51 — in voter turnout in last year’s midterms. And yet we all know of elections where one or two votes decided the winner. So your vote does count. Even if the count is not close, voting is one way of letting your public officials know your opinion. Sometimes it is the only way that makes a difference. Nancy Marr President League of Women Voters Brookhaven

TO THE EdITOr: I am writing for the Long Island for Bernie Sanders volunteer grassroots movement, which is supporting Bernie Sanders for president in both Suffolk and Nassau counties. This is to remind all registered voters who are not a registered democrat and want to vote for Bernie that you must be a registered democrat by Friday, Oct. 9. The County Board of Elections must have your completed email or paper form in its office by Oct. 9. This will enable you to vote in the April 19, 2016, New York State Presidential Primary. If you are not a registered democrat, you will not be

Think twice before hitting the reply-all button

o reply all, or not to reply all, that is the question. But, seriously, when is replying to everyone by email necessary? I know we live in a world where we share every thought that occurs to us because we can. Distributing our thoughts electronically to as many people as possible gives new meaning to the words “publish or perish.”

Still, something about replying all is the equivalent of spraying graffiti, with your initials on it, in my email box. I already get more than enough emails from all the stores that send me hundreds of discounts a day. With all these discounts, I feel like an idiot for paying the listed price for anything. But I digress. I know there are times when replying all is helpful. You see that the conference room is unavailable. Sharing the news will allow everyone to be more productive through the day. There might be a time when you need everyone on a list to know something, like not to park on a side street where the permitparking-only signs might be hard to see. But do all 100 of us on a long email distribution list really need to know that you, specifically, received the email? Not only do people tell us they got the message we all received, but some of them feel the need to embarrass themselves

in the process. A teacher asks all the parents in her six classes to confirm that they received her message. A reply-all message that says: “The Smiths received the email and couldn’t be more excited about the start of a new school year. Every morning, Johnny can’t wait to sit in your class,” is a surefire way to sabotage Johnny as he navigates through the middle school minefield. Then there are the simple emails that don’t require any reply, such as an email with the address of a field or a meeting. “Got it, Dan. We’ve been there so many times before.” Of course you know where it is — everyone knows where it is. The directions and the address for the GPS make it possible for everyone to get there. Seasonal greetings are not, repeat not, an opportunity to hit reply all, especially when the group includes people you’ve never met. An email that “wishes everyone a healthy and a happy start

to the new school year” is not an opportunity to echo the same, exact thoughts to strangers. “So do we” is not an appropriate reply-all response, nor is “Ditto for us” or “Same to everyone else” or “The Dunaiefs feel the same way.” Adding emojis doesn’t make the email message more personal. It’s like doodling next to your graffiti. Cut it out, people — we’re not all 12. I’m tempted, when these replyall messages come through, to write something snarky, but in a distribution list that includes people I don’t know, someone will undoubtedly take it the wrong way because, let’s face it, there’s always someone ready to take offense. Then there are the reply-all messages that seem to highlight a specialized talent or experience. Someone might, for example, be asking people to bring baked goods to a party, a meeting or a fundraiser. By indicating that you’ll bake miniature tarte tatin, crème brûlée or flourless chocolate soufflé, you seem to be brag-

Adding emojis doesn’t make the email message more personal. ging first and contributing to something a distant second. It reminds me of that old joke about an 80-year-old man who goes to a priest to confess that he spent a magical evening with two 25-year-old women. The priest, in shock, asks the gentleman how long it’s been since last confession. The man said, “Confession? I’ve never gone to confession. I’m not religious.” The skeptical priest replied, “So why are you telling me this?” “Are you kidding?” the man answered. “I’m telling everyone I know.” Daniel Dunaief’s recent book, “The Other Parent,” may be purchased online from www.tbrnewsmedia.com/ebooks.
