Three Village schools calling out Cuomo Administrators want aid answers

The Village of Old Field is looking to do some ecological spring cleaning. Flax Pond, a 146-acre tidal wetland on the North Shore, is in dire need of dredging before it deteriorates into an environmental disaster, nearby residents and advocates have contested. The pond’s last dredge was in 1947. Residents’ names have been flooding a petition touting more than 210 signatures to date calling for action at the inlet there. John Robinson, who lives near the water with his wife Fredelle and is at the mercy of the declining water quality there, has been helping circulate that petition and said the buildup of sand within the inlet has prevented the pond from properly emptying at low tide. He said he fears the region is just one major storm away from forcing the inlet to close off completely, which would have devastating effects on the ecosystem there, as the inlet acts as a marine nursery for the Long Island Sound. “We have been watching the pond deteriorate over the last quarter of a century,” he said. “I’ve seen really major changes in the vegetation, the depth and the sea life. There are a lot of things going on, but one key aspect of this is the loss of adequate outflow.”

Stony Brook university runs a lab on the waterfront at Flax Pond and researchers there say they worry about the deteriorating water quality there and its impact on the wildlife.

Fredelle Robinson, an avid fisher and nature lover, said the negative impacts were both aesthetic and environmental. Not only is the wildlife changing, but her waterfront home could be at risk if the water does not drain, she said. “I used to stand in the inlet at night and fish. We could hear the striped bass and their tails flopping in the water,” she said. “You just don’t hear that anymore. Saltwater marshes all over are under stress and this is just another example.”

Flax Pond has not been dredged since 1947 and residents living nearby are noticing a change in the tides since major storms battered the inlet.

Old Field Mayor Michael Levine and the board of trustees also called on legislators from the county, state and town levels to join with Stony Brook University and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to see the pond dredged and protect the fin and shellfish populations known to once thrive there. A throng of concerned citizens, elected officials and Stony Brook University researchers gathered at the Childs Mansion near the inlet Sunday for a lecture sponsored by the Friends of Flax Pond to explore ways to address the clogging. State Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) has been at the forefront of the Friends of Flax Pond’s efforts to address the deterioration on the water and spoke at the group’s Sunday panel. He said there were many factors that went into the best course of action for both the inlet and the surrounding community, all of which needed to be ironed out before taxpayer dollars get thrown into the mix. “While we’re searching for

money to do something to make sure the inlet doesn’t close, we’re also searching for answers to the questions of how to actually write a description of what we’d like to have done,” Englebright said. “We don’t have a scope of work yet that is well defined.” Nancy Grant, program director with the 12-year-old grassroots Friends of Flax Pond group, said the large mound of sand in the middle of the inlet has gotten worse with each passing year. And if not addressed, the saltwater pond could potentially revert back to a freshwater body, which it has not been for nearly 200 years, she said. “Flax Pond serves as a buffer to that whole area as far as flooding is concerned. It has also been supporting a lot of the health of the Long Island Sound,” Grant said. “It absorbs the crashing of the waves. There are homes at risk. There are species at risk.” Grant’s group hosts a lecture series each winter and also sponsors various environmental workshops in conjunction FLAX continued on page A8

The Chabad at Stony Brook will cohost a fascinating evening on March 19 with Dan Alon, one of five Israeli athletes who survived, 42 years ago, what is commonly known as the Munich Massacre. The event will be held at the Charles B. Wang Center Theater at Stony Brook University. Alon authored a book on his harrowing experience in Munich and its lasting effect on his life, titled “Munich Memoir.” In the summer of 1972, Palestinian terrorist group Black September killed 11 Israelis who had traveled to Munich to participate in the international Olympic games. A German police officer was also among the victims. Born and raised in Tel Aviv in 1945, Alon, a married father of three, enjoyed a career as managing director of a plastics packaging company. As Israel’s champion fencer for many years — he began fencing at the age of 12 — Alon participated in several international competitions.

On Aug. 29, 1972, he competed successfully in Munich, beating many opponents. On the morning of Sept. 5, the horror began with the kidnapping of Israeli athletes, culminating in cold-blooded murder. Alon miraculously escaped; after the attack, the games continued as scheduled. After a failed rescue effort, he was assigned the morbid task of reentering the Israeli compound and gathering the belongings of his murdered comrades. Shortly afterward, on the eve before the Jewish New Year, Alon flew back to Israel with 11 coffins draped in Israeli flags. He quit fencing. Alon still maintains contact with the families of the fallen athletes. For more information about Alon’s upcoming lecture at the Wang Center or to purchase tickets, please visit ChabadSB.com/Munich72 or contact Rabbi Motti Grossbaum at 631-4632912 or RabbiMotti@ChabadSB.com.

Gov. Cuomo overstepping executive power: 3V BOE By AndreA Moore PAldy

A resolution by the Three Village School Board declaring that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s efforts to tie increases in school aid to education reform is unconstitutional drew resounding applause and brought people at its most recent meeting. “The Constitution of the State of New York does not grant the governor control over the funding, nor the establishment of educational policy,” Board President Bill Connors read. Such authority, he said, belongs to the Board of Regents and the State Education Department. The board’s resolution, which expresses the sentiment that the governor is depriving the state’s children of their constitutional right to public education, demands that Cuomo relinquish power to the Board of Regents and the SED and adequately fund public schools. In a break from protocol that frustrated school officials across the state last month, Cuomo did not release estimates for funding to individual districts in his executive budget. Instead, he gave a range of increases, contingent upon acceptance of his reforms. If the state legislature adopts his proposals, he would increase funding

statewide by 4.8 percent, but failure to pass would mean that funding would increase by only 1.7 percent. Some of Cuomo’s more controversial reforms include increasing the timeline from three to five years for teachers to achieve tenure, having student assessments comprise half of a teacher’s annual professional performance review and increasing the cap on the state’s charter schools. Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Jeff Carlson has prepared a forecast of the 2015-16 school district budget despite not knowing the amount of state funding. “It will not be a bad year compared to previous years,” he said in a preliminary budget presentation last Wednesday. “We will not have to make any cuts to the budget in order to comply with the cap.” This does not mean, however, that there will not be changes for other reasons, he added. The cap on the tax levy increase will be set for 2.9 percent, he said. The figures for the preliminary budget assume a 2 percent increase in state aid. It’s an estimate that includes the governor’s minimum increase as well as funds restored from the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) — money taken from districts’ aid packages to supplement

the state budget. Though Three Village does not expect full restoration of GEA money for the coming school year, Carlson said it has been working with state Senator John Flanagan (R-Northport) to have the law repealed. Three Village has lost $5.2 million to the GEA this year, Carlson said. The district will still see a reduction of some expenses for the coming year, he said. In addition to about $3.5 million in decreased contributions to retirement systems, the district’s health insurance rates will drop by about 5 percent, saving more than $1 million. Increased revenue is expected from other areas, including tuition from non-residents attending the district’s special education programs and the Three Village Academy. This year’s tuition revenue — $66,000 per student — was about $1.2 million, Carlson said. There also are plans to reduce the money used from the district’s reserve accounts, he said. The assistant superintendent for business services also hopes to balance class sizes at the elementary level and possibly add electives at the secondary level. If Three Village gets more state aid than budgeted, it can either provide additional funding for the priorities he mentioned, lower the tax levy or decide

on a combination of both. The state promises residents another tax freeze credit if districts stay within the cap and implement a Government Efficiency Plan to save 1 percent of the tax levy. Three Village will not have trouble achieving either, Carlson said.

A 23-year-old man from East Moriches charged with raping a Stony Brook woman in 2012 pleaded guilty on Feb. 26 via court conference in Riverhead and faces hard time in prison, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said. Patrick O’Sullivan attacked the house-sitting woman after entering the house through an unlocked door on the night of Nov. 20, 2012, armed with a loaded rifle and disguised with a mask, Spota said. The man fired his weapon twice, restrained her with duct tape and sexually assaulted her. In court on Feb. 26, O’Sullivan pleaded guilty to rape, criminal sexual act, burglary, sexual abuse and conspiracy. The conspiracy charge, Spota said, stemmed from an attempt while incarcerated to hire a hit man to kill his victim and another person he believed would testify against him. Pols: Keep federal antidrug program funded By BarBara Donlon

President Barack Obama is calling for a budget cut to a federal antidrug program, but Suffolk County elected officials say that’s not the way to win Long Island’s ongoing battle with drug abuse. Obama’s budget proposal would cut funding for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program by about $50 million to $193 million. The program provides federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies resources to better assess drug trafficking patterns in the region. It also facilitates information sharing between various levels of law enforcement and health officials, as well as funds enforcement initiatives and drug use prevention and treatment measures. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-New York) strongly opposes the president’s proposed cut, as drug addiction is on the rise. Instead, he wants to increase funding to the program by $100 million. “President Obama’s budget outlines a lot of critical priorities for this nation, but I simply do not agree with his plan to cut critical drug trafficking funding, as heroin use continues to rise and kill our youth,” Schumer said in a press release. According to the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, the price of heroin has decreased over the years and a bundle of the drug can be purchased for $80, while smaller quanti-

ties cost around $7, making for a cheaper high. According to Suffolk County Police Department, a bundle is comprised of 10 decks — or little sleeves of the drug. In 2011, 4.2 million Americans aged 12 or older had used heroin at least once, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. They estimate that 23 percent of individuals who use heroin become addicted. Lisa Ganz, a clinical supervisor at Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, said last month they treated more than 800 patients with drug addictions. She said the number is a few hundred shy of their all time monthly high, which they reached in 2014. “We know Long Island has been hit really hard with the opiate crisis, especially heroin,” Ganz said. Ganz said those who use drugs aren’t bad people, but they make bad decisions, which forces them down a path of addiction. She classified drug addiction as a progressive disease and said she does not want to see a program that works to get drugs off the street cut back. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) commented on the proposed cut by acknowledging the opiate and heroin crisis among young people. He said the county has created a multi-pronged approach to addressing the problem and said he appreciates Schumer’s support to “address this public health crisis.” Northport Village Police Chief Ric

Bruckenthal said he has seen a significant increase in heroin use due to a crackdown and greater regulation over prescription opiates, making heroin, by comparison, a cheaper and easier drug to obtain. Officers in the village are trained in administering Narcan, a prescription medicine that reverses an opioid overdose, such as heroin. Bruckenthal said Narcan has saved several lives, but even after being saved, not everyone gets on the road to recovery. That sentiment was echoed by U.S. Representative Steve Israel (D-Huntington) in a statement this week. He said a decrease in funding is not what the Island needs. “As I work with my colleagues to pass critical spending bills I will support increasing HIDTA (High Intensity Drug

Trafficking Areas) program funding because New York families cannot face this dangerous epidemic without it,” Israel said. The congressman went on to say to many families continue to be hurt by what some have termed the prescription drug and heroin epidemic on Long Island. He said funding should be used to combat the epidemic and to also keep the children in the community safe. Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) said he looks forward to working with Congress and concerned local residents to ensure the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program is adequately funded. “With the growing drug crisis on Long Island, we must remain ever vigilant in stopping drug abuse, while properly educating our youth,” Zeldin said.

HISTORY CLOSE AT HAND

Pat Windrow Klein’s art lives on in Three Village by beverly C. Tyler

Patricia Windrow Klein, a good friend, a consummate artist, and an enthusiastic and dedicated community champion died two years ago today, March 5, at the Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, VA. Pat and her husband Howard Klein had moved to Front Royal in 1991 after living in Setauket since the early 1950s. I first knew of Pat in 1955 when she was already becoming involved in activities in Setauket and took part in the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Brookhaven Town on the Setauket School field. Pat and Howard were members of the Three Village Bicentennial Committee, 1974 through 1976. During 1974, when the committee was deciding on the various projects to be undertaken, Pat and Howard suggested that they would take on the monumental project of writing a guide to the proposed Town of Brookhaven Historic Districts in the Three Village area. The 176-page book, completed and published in 1976 as the Three Village Guidebook: The Setaukets, Poquott, Old Field & Stony Brook, was one of the major factors in the establishment of historic district legislation in the Town of Brookhaven. Pat Windrow illustrated the book, and she and Howard chose the photographs and provided the layout of the book. Pat’s

painting of the Gamecock Cottage graced the cover of the first edition and her 1985 painting of the “Stilt House on the Creek” is the cover art for the 1986 second edition and the 2002 third edition, which is still in print. Bob Dezafra, a neighbor and friend of Pat and Howard commented, “The guidebook was a bicentennial gift to the community by Pat and Howard. It was a truly huge job and continues to be a community resource of lasting value.” Pat Windrow’s contributions to the community also included her artwork. Many of her paintings adorn the walls of homes throughout the area, and her many murals are in schools and banks and other buildings in Setauket and Stony Brook. Barbara Russell commented that Pat painted murals for homeowners and many of them are still on the walls of their homes. One of Pat’s most beautiful murals is a bird’s eye view of the area looking north from Port Jefferson to Stony Brook. The mural, on the west wall of the HSBC Bank in East Setauket, was painted for the Tinker Bank in July 1955 — cleaned, renovated and sky repainted in June 1987. It was a real labor of love. Pat also did a number of pen and ink drawings, including a wonderful and evocative image of Kate Wheeler Strong painted when she was in her 90s. Pat

traveled all over the Three Village area painting wonderful images of both the working and natural environments of Setauket, Stony Brook and many other places on Long Island. One of her favorite locations was around West Meadow Beach and West Meadow Creek. In the middle of the winter she would be sitting in the spacious rear-end of her Checker car at the beach, capturing the colors and textures of the landscape. Pat was an activist in the community for many years. I can still hear her strong, definite voice coming through at community and school board meetings. She was generous with both her time and talent,

producing wonderfully illustrated maps of Setauket and Stony Brook and illustrating guides for the historical society and other organizations, and she once did a wonderful chalk mural on the sidewalks in East Setauket. I hope that anyone who remembers Pat Windrow Klein will respond to this article with their own remembrances sent to the Village Times Herald. Her obituary is at www.cartwrightfuneralhome.com. Her own website, with her biography and many of her paintings can be found at www.windrowgalleries.com Beverly Tyler is the Three Village Historical Society historian.

with Stony Brook University, which works out of a lab directly on the inlet. Steve Abrams, manager of the lab, described Flax Pond as one of the most pristine marshes on all of Long Island. He said a dredging was necessary in order to sustain marine life at the inlet. “It has been really important for studying plants and animals in a relatively natural state. But over the last number of years, serious storms have changed things,” he said. “Tides don’t drain the way they should. It would be unfortunate if species there lost their place to live and it would be less than de-

sirable for research.” Shawn Nuzzo, president of the Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook, said Flax Pond was an example of what the Long Island Sound faces as a whole and includes factors beyond the small Village of Old Field. He said old-fashioned power plants, like one in nearby Port Jefferson, dump warm water into the sound, which translates directly into the Flax inlet. He cited recent legislation out of the Town of Brookhaven requiring improved wastewater standards in the Carmans River on the South Shore and said similar action was needed on the north end. “We must take a hard look at how we are going to stop this loop if we intend on preserving our waterways for future generations,” Nuzzo said.

Photos from Ron Matz

Clockwise from left, Steven Matz hurls a pitch from the mound during spring training; Matz currently boasts a 2.25 era with 135 strikeouts over 24 starts in the Mets’ minor leagues; and Matz, a left-handed pitcher, is known for his fastball.

Ex-Patriot Steven Matz continues to turn heads

Current Mets pitcher is receiving a lot of hype this year for his performance over 24 starts in the minors By Clayton Collier

By night, he is catching catfish and snappers with teammates in the plentiful Florida waters, but by day, he is reeling in national attention with his electric fastball. The break on his secondary pitches is no fish story either. So is the life of Steven Matz at New York Mets Spring Training camp in Port St. Lucie. A second-round pick for Mets in the 2009 MLB Amateur Player Draft, the Stony Brook native is fresh off a season in which he made 24 starts between the Single-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton Mets, ending the year with a 2.25 ERA and 135 strikeouts. Listed at No. 33 on both Baseball America’s and Baseball Prospectus’ Top 100 prospects, Matz is now beginning to garner the hype originally expected when he was drafted more than five years ago.

His father, Ron Matz, said he believes the attention is a positive. “I kind of like the hype, my wife hates it,” he said. “Every time he gets an article in the paper I show her and she’s like ‘enough already, let him just do his thing.’ It’s been really cool, though.” Former All-Star Mets pitcher Frank Viola, who has coached the left-handed pitcher during much of his professional career, said the 23-year-old has all the tools necessary to be a successful pitcher. “His delivery is fantastic, his work ethic is second to none, his attitude is fantastic,” the 1988 American League Cy Young award winner said. “He’s got all the intangibles that nobody teaches. It has to be learned, and he has.” Viola said Matz has little left to accomplish before we see him in Queens inside Citi Field stadium.

“I love starting and starting is what I “He’s opened up a lot of eyes over the last couple years,” he said. “It’s go- want to do,” Matz said. “But if they need me ing to continue as long as he keeps on in the major leagues to be a reliever, that is doing what he is doing. All he needs is something I would definitely do.” With a logjam of pitchers trying to crack some quality experience at the TripleA level and a spot to open up in the big the rotation, the deck is stacked against leagues and he’ll take care of the rest.” Matz breaking camp with the team, but Matz’s road to this point has not been a nonetheless, he said he is trying to show straight line. In 2010, an MRI revealed an the organization what he has to offer, while 80 percent tear in the ulnar collateral liga- learning from veterans on the squad. “I’m going to try to show them everyment of Matz’s throwing arm, requiring thing I have and try to force my way there,” Tommy John surgery. A number of setbacks led to an almost he said. “But at the same time I am trying to two and a half year recovery from the proce- learn as much as I can and get better from dure. Viola said Triple-A week, and Matz will continue to do what he can to showcase his abilities. Matz’s parents, will prove to be a good final test for Matz. “There are a lot of ex-major leaguers in along with a group of about 20 friends and the Pacific Coast League, and they are very family, will head down to Port St. Lucie this good hitters,” he said. “He is going to have to weekend to see him pitch. In the meantime, Matz says he doesn’t continue to learn to pitch.” Matz is being groomed by the Mets as pay too much attention to the hype. OPINION EDITORIAL

Residents show off their fresh cuts for a good cause.

Together we can make a difference

Important causes are only successful when a whole community stands behind them, which is why we are calling on our readers to participate in the upcoming head-shaving events for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support research into childhood cancers. That participation can be shedding locks or just opening a wallet — either will make a difference. According to the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the most common cancers overall are breast, prostate, lung and colon or rectal cancer. But the most common childhood cancers are types such as leukemia, lymphoma, brain cancer and bone cancer. The institute estimated that almost 2,000 U.S. children and adolescents younger than 19 died of cancer in 2014. While childhood cancers are not as prevalent as others and the mortality rate is not off the charts, each case tugs at us for many reasons: There’s no one we love more than our children; kids are innocent, and some may not even be able to understand their own suffering; and there are few losses more tragic than those of lives that had been bursting with potential and dreams unfulfilled. There are small things we as residents can do to help ease that suffering, even if it is in the slightest of ways. That is why we hope readers of this newspaper will find some way to participate in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s cause. For more information about events in your area, see page A8.

The spoils of a Suffolk County East End Drug Task Force-led heroin bust, unveiled by Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota at a press conference in Riverhead last year.

Funding the fight against drugs TO THE EDITOR: The Village Times Herald made a very reasoned, if perhaps understated case, for not reducing federal funding being used in the fight against drugs. Heroin overdose deaths on Long Island soared from 61 in 2010 to 144 in 2013. One hundred of those fatalities were right here in Suffolk County. Kids are dying, and as upscale, suburban neighborhoods are learning, this epidemic knows neither color nor class. While too many behave as if there’s no real problem, several local school districts — Three Village, Mount Sinai and Comsewogue — should be congratulated for taking a proactive approach to the threat. They brought in a powerful speaker, Michael DeLeon, to introduce his very effective Steered Straight Program to assembly audiences. Mr. DeLeon’s compelling personal story, along

with those told by the young recovering addicts who are part of his presentation, left teachers, students and parents tremendously affected. So kudos to the above mentioned administrations, moms, dads and staff members who were able to make available the money needed to bring such a bold, cutting-edge program to their children. If, out of the many hundreds of participants, the message made a positive difference in the behaviors of 100 “at-risk” kids, that’s a lot of young people kept from a life of misery and even death. With that in mind it should be awfully simple to properly prioritize government spending in a way that will more than make up for the $50 million President Obama plans to cut and the $100 million Senator Schumer wishes to add. And it won’t cost taxpayers any more money. Every year Schumer’s colleague, Senator Tom Coburn, comes up with a meticulously

footnoted list of wasteful spending. In 2014 he cited $25 billion in waste from 100 projects. Included were millions for (1) studying how monkeys gamble, (2) filming mountain lions running on treadmills, (3) synchronized swimming for sea monkeys, (4) Swedish massages for bunnies and (5) the renovation of a low-traffic airport serving high-end skiers. If our elected officials could shave just 1 percent of that $25 billion in pork and re-dedicate that dough to antidrug programs, they’d have $100 million more than Mr. Schumer and the Herald would like to see added to the fight. Monkey gambling, lions running, sea monkeys swimming, bunny massages and wealthy skiers not withstanding, shouldn’t our first concern be the health and safety of our children? Cut the ridiculous waste and fund programs like DeLeon’s.

Welcome to the domain of the Three Village Community Trust. Of the 15 historic districts in Brookhaven Town, five are within the Three Villages. Find out why they matter, how they’re protected and how you benefit. We hope you’ll add your voice, your skills and your energy to shaping the future for both conservation and preservation in our community. Read more about the

trust’s works in progress at the new-and-improved Threevillagecommunitytrust.org. And please join the trustees on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Setauket Neighborhood House, to learn more about what your local land trust does, how we do it and how you can get involved.

Celebrating the moment with the right cookie

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com

M

y wife makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. I recognize designating something as the “best” is subjective. Sometimes, it’s not what’s in them that counts, but who makes them; although it’s impossible to imagine a softer, more flavorful cookie.

I recently celebrated a birthday with those cookies and, in the moment that I ate them, I could have been five, eight, ten, or even 16 years younger. Maybe I was returning from a run in Central Park, delighted to catch the scent of those cookies as I reached the fourth floor of my five-story walk up. A few weeks before my birthday, my wife and I celebrated a wedding anniversary. While 15 years isn’t exactly a milestone, it’s one of those “0” or “5” numbers that we who live in a base-10 system recognize. When you’ve been married for more than a decade and have kids, you tend to focus much less on “how are we doing” than you do on “how are they doing.” The “they” refers to the small people who look so delightful and charming while sleeping, but who have figured out how to make us see red when they fight

with each other, argue with us, or chew through time by checking Instagram, looking at the latest scores, or needing one more snack before moving to the next activity. While we reflect on the relationship that started it all during anniversaries, we hope our spouses know what we’re thinking and what we need on our birthdays, even when we ourselves can’t come up with anything we’d like. And so it was recently, when my family arrived early at one of our birthday restaurants. We go to these places to celebrate the start of another year because they serve kid-friendly food and they and the other patrons are indifferent to a sudden shout, an unexpected move, or an argument. We were so early that, to borrow from Dr. Seuss, “We sat in the parking lot, we sat there, we two (plus our kids), and we said, ‘How we wish we had some-

thing to do.’” My wife suggested we go to a batting cage. Our children, who practice softball and baseball through the year, groaned. Neither of them wanted to put on a helmet, find batting gloves and hit another ball at that moment. “It’s not for you,” my wife said, her eyes widening in a way that suggested they shouldn’t challenge her. “It’s for him,” she insisted, pointing to me. I wasn’t sure I needed to hit balls, either. The first batting cage was far too crowded. We found another one just a few miles down the road. I bought a few tokens, borrowed my daughter’s bat, dug in and took a few practice swings. The first contact between bat and ball was like a spark that traveled through my brain and back to my youth, to a time when hitting a baseball was the most exciting thing I could imagine in a day. I didn’t clobber every pitch and I

didn’t win a World Series, even in my mind. I just did what I tell my kids to do all the time: see the ball, hit the ball. I didn’t think about deadlines, responsibilities, or chores. There was no driveway to shovel or dishwasher to repair. There was only an approaching baseball and the tool in my hands to hit it. My wife stood at the entrance to the cage, pumping token after token into the machine, asking me just one question as a satisfied smile spread across her face: “Again?” Daniel Dunaief’s recent book, “The Other Parent,” may be purchased online from northshoreoflongisland.com/ebooks.

t started off simply enough. We were going to get a break from the wicked weather, get out of town and enjoy a little rest. I had fallen on black ice, hurt my back and this would be a chance to recover with no other responsibilities. Sounds innocent, right? So there I am, sitting on a deck outside my hotel room, propped up on some pillows, reading a good book, when my cell phone rings. “Hello, Lee, this is Harold.” It takes me a

moment to register that it is my next-door neighbor back home. “Lee, I just drove up my driveway, and I have to tell you that it sounds like you have a garden hose gushing inside your house. I know you are on vacation, but I thought I should call to tell you. Lee? Lee? Are you there?” I didn’t faint, but I considered it. Here I was, almost 2,000 miles away, and there is water gushing in my house because of cracked pipes. It took me some moments to pull my wits together, such as they were. So what does one do when one receives such a phone call? I offer this as a primer, and I will leave out the hysteria. In rapid succession, I called the plumber, another member of my household who was not home at the time but close by, my friend, another neighbor and the insurance company. After carefully taking down all the details, my insurance company called a restoration company, who came with giant fans to dry things out and a small instrument with twin

sensors to detect where there was water. And there was plenty of water—behind the walls, in the insulation, in the padding under the carpets, in the clothes closets and every other inch into which a droplet might fall. Then there were all the logistics to arrange: someone had to let in the restoration company and be available for them while they worked, someone had to authorize the work, someone had to sort through and mop up the wet and damp things in the rooms. And someone had to keep me informed of what was needed at any given moment. As the days went by, we ran up considerable phone time, and then we were scheduled to return. At that point, we were told two startling bits of information. First, I was assured that I shouldn’t be too shocked when I entered my house. After all, they had to strip the sheetrock, remove the ceilings, take off the light fixtures, transfer all the furnishings from the affected rooms into the

unaffected rooms, and generally rearrange my interior world. That was just part one. Part two was that it was snowing heavily in New York and flights were being cancelled all over the country. This was complication beyond the obvious. With my bad back, I was going to face the prospect of long delays in airport terminals and questionable departures. And the poor driver who was waiting in New York to pick us up and take us home! How long would he be stuck? Little did we, or he, know, he was about to spend the night at my house. Sleep over, you say? Yes, because when he finally drove down the driveway to my front door at 3 a.m. and lifted out the luggage, he discovered his car was stuck on the ice and he wasn’t leaving — at least not until after sunrise, when someone could be called to free him. Storms make for strange bedfellows, so to speak. So he slept uneasily in my most comfortable living room chair as

his wife called to check on him, in the night. And finally, a neighbor who is an early riser perceived the difficulty, got out his snow blower and enabled the driver’s escape. I will confess that, despite the gentle warnings, when I walked into my house and viewed my wall studs and ceiling beams and the general rearrangement of my favorite things, I almost lost it. Furthermore, my back was hurting and all I wanted was to brush my teeth and get into my own bed, which eventually did happen. So, what I can advise at this point, if you are planning a vacation, is to leave a key with one of your neighbors, along with the phone number of your plumber, and directions on how to find the shutoff for the water main. And upon your return, when people ask how your vacation was, just laugh.
