Stony Brook’s B-Section streets new again By Phil Corso

Stony Brook has many brand new boulevards, thanks to Brookhaven bureaucrats, and residents are abuzz. The Brookhaven Town Highway Department finished a long-anticipated road improvement project in Stony Brook last week in the area known as the B-Section, repaving 19 roads and making the neighborhood safer. Residents living in the community celebrated the milestone after more than two decades of wear and tear. “It is a pleasure driving through the community now,” said Dr. Jay Orlikoff, who lives in the neighborhood. “The last time these roads were repaved was about 25 years ago, and it was tough to get in and out of the community. This time it was very well done and the courtesy of the workers in how they directed traffic was extremely helpful.” Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro (R) said the 19 Stony Brook roads have been near the top of his department’s list for more than a year, but budget constraints have limited his repaving initiatives. But as of the end of last week, the 19 roads — including Balfour Lane, Ballad Lane, Ballad Place, Barker Court, Barker Drive, Barnwell Lane, Beaverdale Lane, Bendix Lane, Bently Lane, Birdseye Circle, Blackwell

Court, Blackwell Lane, Blueberry Lane, Bonnie Lane, Botany Lane, Bucknell Lane, Bunting Lane, Burgess Lane and Buxmont Lane — have new surfaces and are safer routes. “They were in terrible condition. These were roads that, quite frankly, I wish I could have gotten to last year,” he said. “Unfortunately, as you can imagine, everything is budget-driven. There’s a finite amount of money.” The highway superintendent said he has about 3,350 miles of road to maintain throughout Brookhaven on an annual basis, and more than $100 million worth of roadwork on his to-do list at any given time. But there is only roughly $17 million in funds available to complete the work. “I’m trying to work my way through these roads, and one of the things I’ve tried to do with people is create a reasonable expectation,” Losquadro said. “There are three- to five-year plans of how we need to get where we need to be, and I’m working toward that. A project like this, that can cost between threequarters of a million dollars and $1 million, is just an extensive project.” For the better part of a week, Brookhaven road crews took to the B-Section to rebuild concrete curbs, drainage and paving components on the 19 roads. Residents waited patiently over several days of mill-

ing work and the end result, the superintendent said, was a safer Stony Brook. “It is very gratifying to hear the positive feedback we have been receiving from residents in this community,” Losquadro said. “This is one more project I can check off our to-do list. The Highway Department will keep on pace to complete many more roads throughout this paving season.” Looking ahead, Losquadro said he had

another big project coming up, budget permitting, in the same vicinity near both Spyglass Lane and Buccaneer Lane, where he said roads are in terrible condition. “We need to get in there and get that done,” he said. “With the budgetary constraints, I have to be honest with you, I can spend my entire allotment without a problem. But the residents throughout this town deserve attention. We try to do the worst first.”

Michael Cosel is remembered as a staunch advocate for special education throughout the three Village school district and beyond.

Cosel’s efforts in the community did not in any way impact his dedication as a family man. Daughter Paige mentioned Cosel’s humor and generosity as the traits that she would remember most. “As a father and a grandfather he was playful and generous,” she said. Ronne Cosel had similar memories of the family man.

“He always had time to have dinner with us,” she said. Along with his advocacy efforts, Cosel was a custom builder of single-family homes. In his spare time he liked to travel, scuba dive, sail and ski. His wife even said she shared nearly 400 dives with her late husband over the years. “I would have probably stayed home,” she said. “He was an adventurer.”

Fostering friendships with Setauket seniors Spirits were high last Thursday when 25 fifth-grade students from Adrienne D’Onofrio’s Setauket Elementary school class enjoyed a farewell lunch at Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. Over the course of the school year, the students have partnered with Jefferson’s Ferry’s Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing residents, enjoying companionship, crafting, cooking, learning and fun. Well-loved by students and residents alike, the Intergenerational Program was conceived 10 years ago by Setauket Elementary teacher Ellen Young, who is now retired but is still active in the program, with Jefferson Ferry Director of Therapeutic Recreation Jennifer Barrett. Generally, a dozen or so residents engage with the children in small groups during monthly visits. “You can’t even imagine how much the children look forward to seeing the residents at our visits,” D’Onofrio said. “It has really made an impact on both the students and the residents. Together they’ve written poems, played games, built candy houses, and cooked up a Thanksgiving feast. It’s been a great year.” The farewell luncheon is always an emotional and memorable event, with barely a dry eye among the adults in attendance. The children get all dressed up, parents are invited, and a lunch is served in the rotunda at Jefferson’s Ferry’s main building. This year the children read aloud letters to the residents and performed Randy Newman’s song, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” “The students and the residents become very close over the course of the year,” said Barrett. “We attended the school’s talent show and the kids ended up cheering for us. It made our residents feel loved and very special. We’ve also had numerous students return over the years, either to visit their friends or give community service. It’s very gratifying and a win-win for everyone.”

Student Harry Rosenzweig wrote a note to resident Jim Ardolino. “I want to thank you so much for playing spoons with me that Thursday we came in April. You made me realize that my hair is way too long and that I can’t see with [it] in my eyes! I got it cut that weekend and I saw the world in a new way! The stories you told about how athletic your childhood was were so awesome and interesting. Thank you for being the coolest resident ever.” Another student, Julianna Lorber, said that, “I’ve had such an amazing experience coming to see all of the residents. ... Thank you for always making me leave with a smile on my face.” Mary Bafundi, a 95-year-old Jefferson’s Ferry resident, has participated in the Intergenerational Program since she moved into Assisted Living more than five years ago. Today Mary lives in Skilled Nursing, but pilots her electric power chair to keep up with her young friends. She’s helped plant flowers with the children, baked with them, attended their talent shows and told them her stories. As the oldest of 13 children, Mary spent most of her life first tending to her siblings and then her own children. Joining Mary in the program are residents Giselle McGann, Dorothy Catania, Jim Ardolino, David Wooster, Nina Sloan, Betty Bangert and Lisa Goldschmidt. In addition to Henry and Julianna, D’Onofrio’s students are: Ashley Bunici, Hazel Cash, Jean Chung, Faith Curth, Melaina Gargano, Toni Amber Hemmerick, Kaitlyn Hernandez, Kristopher Furnari, Maia Le Lay, David Liang, Giani Mascolo, Conor Matthews, Julian McGrath, Mark O’Brien, Samuel Ribeiro-DiCanio, Lindsay Rodgers, Ben Sheline, Sohum Singh, Hannah Toirac, Melissa Vivenzio and Dylan Zummo. - Phil Corso

Baymen to town: no more restrictions by erika karp

Local fishermen came out to Brookhaven Town Hall last Thursday to let officials know they oppose Supervisor Ed Romaine’s push to limit horseshoe crab harvesting. Earlier that week, Romaine (R) announced he and the town board would consider urging the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which regulates the industry, to ban horseshoe crab harvesting within 500 feet of town-owned property in an effort to protect the crab population and allow them a safe place to mate. Romaine moved to table the idea after hearing the baymen’s concerns. The 450-million-year-old species are used for bait and in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries, as their blue blood is used to detect bacterial contamination in products. At a May 19 press conference, officials said if the crab population shrinks, other species — like those that eat the crabs’ eggs —

could be negatively affected. Stony Brook’s West Meadow Beach and Mount Sinai Harbor already have harvesting plans in place, and a ban would broaden the restriction area. However, the fishermen said the restriction was not based on any facts and the horseshoe crab population is not declining. In addition, they said further regulation would affect their livelihoods. Ron Bellucci Jr., of Sound Beach, said horseshoe crab harvesting is a vital part of his income. He added that he knows the crabs are important to the larger ecosystem, which he is a part of as well. “I’m just a man, but I’m a vital part of the food chain and I think I’m at the top,” he said. According to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, a partnership between East Coast states to protect fisheries, a 2013 assessment of the horsecrab population showed a decrease in the New York and New England regions, while crabs have increased in the southern states — North Carolina through Florida

— and remained stable from New Jersey through coastal Virginia. David Klopfenstein, of the North Shore Baymen’s Association, urged the board to speak

with the DEC before supporting a ban. He said there was a lot of misinformation regarding a very complex issue that is already being controlled.

“It’s also the most well-managed fisheries that we have up and down the East Coast,” he said. The DEC did not immediately comment on the issue.

Corner Animal Hospital is conveniently located at 124 Woods Corner Road in Setauket at the Southeast corner of the intersection of 25A and Nicolls Road. This building was previously the Corner Bookshop, a small business owned and operated by the Mullens for 35 years. The transformation to the Corner Animal Hospital occurred in 2000 which filled a void left when one of Stony Brook’s first veterinarians, Wendel Moore closed his practice. There are three veterinarians at Corner Animal Hospital. It is owned by Judith Lombardi-Daniels and Dorothy Hayes, a native Long Islander from Farmingville. Sarah Reed joined their team five years ago. A three-doctor practice ensures your pet can be seen seven days a week and enables your pets’ care to be managed by three University of Pennsylvania-trained veterinarians with many years of combined experience. The practice stresses the importance of preventative care with annual physical exams for your dogs and cats. Vaccination protocols are individualized to suit each pet’s needs. Parasite protection for heartworm, fleas and especially ticks is recommended since Lyme disease is so prevalent on Long Island. Microchip implants are available for permanent identification. Surgical services are available for spays, neuters, tumor removals, bladder and intestinal surgeries as well as X-rays and dental cleanings. Special services like ultrasounds and endoscopy are performed by board-certified specialists at the hospital. Boarding is available for pets featuring a private yard with astroturf for your pet to play and runs with skylights for protection from inclement weather. Corner Animal Hospital is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. The hospital helps support local groups and offers volunteer opportunities for aspiring students interested in careers in veterinary medicine. One exceptional volunteer who started at age 13 is graduating this year from Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine! The practice is open seven days a week to serve the community. Business hours are Monday–Thursday 9–6:30, Friday and Saturday 9–4 and Sunday 9–1. A dedicated staff member is on premises during business hours and is just a phone call away to assist you. Peaceful protests are an American tradition ‘I spent my boyhood behind the barbed wire fences of American internment camps and that part of my life is something that I wanted to share with more people.’ — Star trek actor and Social advocate GeorGe takei By Rich AcRitelli

Our nation has lately been rocked by protests that are springing up around the country in response to perceived unequal treatment, mostly at the hands of law enforcement. But these sorts of movements are nothing new — Americans of all colors and creeds have a history of protesting the government and bringing about positive change. Since the first European explorers and settlers made their way to this continent, Native Americans have experienced some of the greatest hardships. While there are some positive stories in American history, like that of Sioux runner Billy Mills winning the gold medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics for the 10,000-meter race, such stories were rare. The reservation system was built on poverty and has historically had high rates of suicide, depression, alcoholism and drug abuse. During the 1970s, major tribal groups banded together to protest for enhanced rights from the government. From briefly occupying Alcatraz Island in San Francisco to taking over the Bureau of Indian Affairs building in Washington, D.C., it was their goal to work with the government to better the lives of Native Americans. After Japan’s Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, the fearful U.S. government removed Japanese-Americans from their daily lives on the West Coast. Loyal people who paid taxes, were productive citizens and had their children learn about the Constitution were viewed as enemy combatants. More than 110,000 citizens were forced into internment camps from California to Arkansas. From 1942 to

1946, the Japanese were imprisoned and had all of their rights stripped from them. Ironically, some of the most valiant U.S. soldiers who had served in the bloody fighting in Italy’s mountainous terrain during World War II were JapaneseAmericans. With their loved ones imprisoned at home, the soldiers were highly decorated and even wounded fighting against the Nazis. But unlike other historic groups that fought back against injustice, the Japanese Americans did not mount any movement of criticism against their internment, and there was no public or political sympathy for them. It was some 40 years later when Congress finally listened to several weeks of testimony that described the horrors of internment. In 1988, the government formally apologized for the wrongdoing and compensated affected citizens with reparations. Once World War II ended, black soldiers who defended their country arrived home to a government that was still unwilling to fully grant equal rights to them. Some African Americans who fought with distinction in the European and Pacific theaters were lynched in their uniforms when they returned home, a report that sickened President Harry S. Truman. In 1948, he desegregated the armed forces. But racism was not over — since the end of the Civil War, black citizens had to contend with unfair treatment, such as poll taxes to keep them from voting and the resentment and violence of the Ku Klux Klan. Black Americans responded fully during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s, including with the civil disobedience under Martin Luther King Jr.

long island residents hold a rally to call for justice for crime victims in the huntington area, most of them hispanic.

As a young man, Cesar Chavez realized that massive inequalities plagued the Latino pickers in the California fields. After spending two years in the military, Chavez began his life’s mission to help the migrant workers, who had little voice in their society. His earliest efforts of aiding others were to ensure that Hispanic people had support dealing with police discrimination, violence, tax problems and immigration issues. Chavez’s social work was also geared toward gaining respect from the California government to help the thousands of workers who strenuously labored in the fields. He extensively traveled in that state to gauge the needs of the workers. During the 1960s, his labor movement reached the impoverished vegetable and fruit pickers. Through nonviolent protests, Chavez and his followers asked Americans not to buy the products that they were harvesting in order to put pressure on the large businesses and farms to be fairer with their wages and labor practices. At various points dur-

ing the movement, Chavez fasted several times to bring attention to the economic, social and political needs of the workers and citizens he represented. By the 1970s, the pickers’ movement achieved success, with many of the farmhands gaining union contracts. The United Farm Workers Union earned the right to collectively bargain. It is an American right to protest unfair treatment at the hands of the local, state and federal government. While many inequalities still exist in our society, past movements have demonstrated that peaceful protests for change do work. Change has and always will come to this nation, but it cannot be positive if won through violence against people or property. PEOPLE North Shore graduates celebrate

Graduation season is upon us. Poquott resident and Ward Melville alumni, Alex Stubberfield, graduated from Virginia Tech with a master’s in both philosophy and public and international affairs. In the fall, he will continue his academic career at Virginia Tech to pursue a doctorate of philosophy in the Department of Political Science’s “ASPECT” program — Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical and Cultural Thought. Al DeStefano, another graduate of Ward Melville High School, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy Class of 2015 at West Point over the weekend. He was an avid leader of the WMHS lacrosse team and continued that success throughout his academic years and is off to Fort Benning in Georgia now that he has capped off his higher education pursuit.

International award for WMHS scientist

Ward Melville High School senior Niyati Desai was named a second-place finalist in the physics category of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held May 10-15 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Desai, a member of Ward Melville’s InSTAR® science research program, presented her work alongside over 1,700 student scientists from 75 countries, regions and territories. Her project used graphene to develop a new type of transistor that can be a hundred times smaller than current silicon-based versions. This pioneering work is expected to lead to a new generation of super-small electronic devices that are far more sophisticated and efficient than our current technology allows. ISEF is a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP) and the world’s largest international precollege science competition. High school students showcase their independent research as they compete for approximately $4 million in prizes. The Intel ISEF is the premier global science competition for students in grades 9–12.

Three Village appoints new assistant principals The Three Village school district has appointed Tanya Hurowitz and Merrilleen Heidrich as assistant principal of Arrowhead and W.S. Mount Elementary Schools, respectively. Both professionals will begin their work in the district on July 1. Hurowitz, a nearly 20-year veteran educator, is a familiar face in the district, having worked at the elementary level from September 2000 through June 2008. She is currently the assistant principal of Woodhull Elementary School in the William Floyd School District. During her previous work in Three Village, Hurowitz worked as a

summer reading teacher, third-grade teacher and assistant principal at Nassakeag Elementary School. Heidrich has worked in the educational field since 1996 and is currently working at Sunrise Drive Elementary School in the Sayville school district as AIS math teacher and special education summer school principal.

Ward Melville baseball is swinging for the fences After completing the regular season with a 19-2 overall record and 16-2 mark in League I play, the No. 2 Ward Melville baseball team is hoping to power past East Islip, to take on the winner of the Connetquot/Smithtown East series in the Suffolk County Class AA finals. After bypassing the qualifying round, the Patriots, with the help of starting pitcher Joe Barbieri, edged out and shut out No. 6 East Islip, 1-0, in the first of a three-game series. The team traveled to its opponent on Wednesday, but results were not available by press time. Should Ward Melville lose, the team will host East Islip today, at home at 4 p.m. File photos by Desirée Keegan

Boys’ Lacrosse The Ward Melville boys’ lacrosse team may have something special to celebrate this season. After an early exit at the hands of West Islip in the playoff quarterfinals last season, the Patriots have pushed all the way through the bracket to the Suffolk County Class A finals. First, No. 4 Ward Melville beat out Riverhead and Half Hollow Hills East, before narrowly upsetting No. 1-seeded Northport 11-10 Friday, to move on to play No. 2 Smithtown East. The results of Wednesday’s culmination of the Suffolk playoffs was not available by press time, but should the Patriots win, they’ll be back on track to make another run at states. The last time the team won the state Class A title was the 2012-13 season, which was the team’s first win since 2000.

Check out the full story on Wednesday’s playoff finals on our website at www.tbrnewsmedia.com.

editoriAL

Safe bet for safe spots Thanks to legislation introduced by Suffolk County Legislator tom Muratore (r-ronkonkoma), the county could be the next municipality in the nation to create safe spots — public locations where residents can exchange goods and conduct private sales. Similar safe havens have been created throughout the United States — in Georgia, Missouri and Connecticut, for example — in response to crimes committed against people using websites like Craigslist to buy and sell goods. While the majority of Craigslist transactions occur without incident, there is always the chance of someone taking advantage of the situation, whether it be robbing the other person in the transaction or physically harming them in some way. We applaud Muratore, a former Suffolk County police officer, for looking into this simple solution to deter unscrupulous individuals from harming others. But if the county does move forward with this idea, we hope the locations will be in active places; be monitored by surveillance; be heavily signed, notifying visitors that it is a safe spot and is being monitored; and provide residents with safety tips for engaging in such exchanges in an effort to be even more proactive than reactive. As Muratore said, “technology is changing the way people are doing business,” and we have to change with it.

Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, as well as the start of barbecue season.

Stay safe at the BBQ to the editor: Whatever happened to the good old days when the worst things we had to fear on Memorial day were traffic jams and indigestion? this year, it was all about food poisoning by the nasty e. coli, Salmonella and Listeria bugs lurking in hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken nuggets at millions of backyard

With many thanks to the editor: on Thursday, May 14, our family gathered at Minnesauke elementary School to watch our youngest daughter and her fellow sixth-graders perform in their last concert before moving up to P.J. Gelinas Jr. high School. We were very excited but not at all prepared for the medical emergency that would strike as the concert began. We wanted to extend our sincere and humble thanks to the many people who assisted us that evening. Luck was on our side as fellow concert attendees watching

barbecues. the USdA Meat and Poultry hotline’s advice is to grill meat and chicken products longer and hotter. they fail to caution that hightemperature grilling forms lots of cancer-causing compounds. do we really need to choose between food poisoning and cancer? Luckily, enterprising food manufacturers and processors have met this challenge head-on by developing a great

variety of healthful, delicious, convenient plant-based veggie burgers, veggie dogs and soy nuggets. these wholesome foods don’t harbor nasty bugs or cancer-causing compounds. they don’t even carry cholesterol, saturated fats, drugs or pesticides. their children that evening included several eMS workers, dr. Andrew Wackett and Setauket assistant fire chief Scott Gressin. They all came to our aid while missing most, if not all, of their own children’s performances. We felt our emergency was immediately under control due to their swift action. Appreciation for the professionalism in a situation like this is of course expected. however, words cannot express the gratitude we feel with the outpouring of selfless support from the Minnesauke community that night. Principal Brian Biscari, choral

director Susan Aupperlee and band director Mark Portugal — you all took care of our children as your own that night. We will never be able to adequately thank you. The outpouring of support and offerings of help have been staggering from friends and fellowMinne parents since that night. Thankfully, we can report all of us will be attending moving up ceremonies at Minnesauke and Gelinas in just a few weeks and are looking forward to a bit less eventful concerts in the future. Laughing off a coach’s catchphrase malaise

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com

boys’ baseball team I coached recently lost a game in such an excruciating fashion that I couldn’t rely on all the standby coach catchphrases. “We’ll get ’em next time,” would fall flat, especially when we had them for the taking. We were up by two runs and were in complete control of the game

until the final outs. “Hey, this one’s on me.” That’s nice and can work in deflecting any possible blame, but the kids generally don’t buy into it. If they believe it, it also sets a dangerous precedent for future losses. “Hey, coach,” they might ask at the end of another game. “This one’s clearly not on you, right? Isn’t it Johnny’s fault?” Those final three outs never happened. What made the game even more difficult to swallow was that the other team didn’t put a single ball in play in their final at bat. Four walks, a hit batter and a few wild pitches later, we were done. We trudged to left field for the postgame analysis and pep talk. “Hey,” I said. “Look, uh, this is one game, right?” I could see it in their eyes: “Weak and feeble, coach. You’re going to have to do better than that.” “You know, we did a lot right this game.”

“Who cares,” their sullen, downcast eyes indicated. “We lost.” “OK, well, we can’t win them all.” I didn’t even need to look at them to know what they were thinking. I was thinking it, too, as the words came dribbling out of my mouth. “Seriously? You’re going with that?” “Boys, I know you all did your best.” Their eyes moved to their parents, as if they were saying telepathically: “Get me out of here, I want to go home.” “Hey,” I said, a small smirk on my face. “Guys, who saw Joey’s slide at second today? Was that the ugliest thing you’ve ever seen?” Joey had wandered too far from second and would have been out if the pitcher had thrown the ball to the second baseman. When the second baseman had to move a few feet from the base, Joey dove back

head first and landed flat on his chest, a yard short of the base. He crawled on his hands and knees across the dirt to the base, arriving just in time to beat the second baseman’s tag. “That was funny,” several of them seemed to say. Joey, you see, is a bit sensitive so that comment could have been dangerous. Even he, however, offered a small smile. It was an absurd moment to savor. And, fortunately for us, he was safe, so laughing about it was probably safe. In that final, fateful, painful inning, the first pitcher walked two and hit a batter, sending the tying run to second and the winning run to first. I brought in a tall relief pitcher who promptly walked another two batters. A wild pitch later, the game was over. “Fred, do you know why I put you in there at the end of the game?” I asked. “Because you believed in me?” he offered hopefully.

Hanging on to all your parts

M

y mother adamantly refused to let the pediatrician remove my tonsils several decades ago. She certainly respected his expertise, having chosen him carefully after an extended search when she knew she was pregnant. But she was not going to agree with his recommended course of action despite my chronic tonsillitis. “Do you have clinical evidence that children who have had their tonsils removed get sick less often?” she demanded of

him. “No,” he responded slowly, “only anecdotal evidence. You know the tonsils have no known function and are not necessary, and hers are very large.” “Hmmph,” was my mother’s rejoinder, “not known to you doctors.” So, as you might expect, I grew up with my tonsils and still have them to this day. They are large enough to inspire each new physician who looks in my throat to exclaim over both their size and their existence in a member of my generation, but whatever role they may play in the human body, they are still playing in mine. My mother and my father had two strongly-held beliefs: First that there were no superfluous parts to the miraculous human body and, second, that optional surgery was not an option. I am sure they were encouraged in those beliefs by the death of an only child of dear friends during an optional tonsillectomy. Do I know if they were right? All I can offer is that history shows the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. That is why I felt a

burst of glee when I came across a recent article in The New York Times Science section headlined, “Saving the Appendix.” They stopped removing tonsils as simply a matter of course many years ago, but here was further affirmation of the parental dicta. “Five small studies from Europe, involving a total of 1000 patients, indicate that antibiotics can cure some patients with appendicitis; about 70 percent of those who took the pills did not require surgery,” according to Gina Kolata, author of the article. As well, patients who had an appendectomy after first trying antibiotics did not face any more complications than those who went directly to surgery. This, of course, flies in the face of traditional exhortations about rushing to remove the inflamed appendix before it bursts, potentially with dangerous results. While these studies suggest that surgery can be avoided altogether in treating appendicitis, a large-scale clinical trial must be held for verification — and one is in the planning. When

patients who had already had an appendectomy were asked if they would have been willing to try antibiotics first, nearly threequarters responded “yes.” The appendix is “a tiny, wormshaped tube that hangs off the right side of the colon,” Kolata said, and no one knows what it does or why it can suddenly act up. Nor does anyone know why it also can get better on its own, even without antibiotics. And antibiotics actually have been used in the past to treat an inflamed appendix. According to The Times, during the Cold War in the 1950s, when American sailors spent at least six months on nuclear submarines that were prohibited from surfacing, patients with appendicitis were given antibiotics and no deaths or complications were reported. To use antibiotics would, of course, eliminate the need for surgery and hospitalization where appendicitis is diagnosed, which would be both cheaper and safer. But even if it revolutionized traditional treatment, using antibiotics would not immediately answer

‘OK, well, we can’t win them all.’ “Well, sure, but the real reason is that you’re much taller than me.” Again, I was reaching for the absurd. No one looked at their parents. “Yeah, you see, it’s not right for a 12-year-old boy to be taller than his coach. I needed to cut you down to size.” The grin spread quickly across his face, as well as those of the other four boys who look down on me. No, it wasn’t in the playbook, but it worked.
