Three Village Historical Society commemorates Flag Day

The Three Village Historical Society hosted its first annual Flag Retirement Ceremony to honor Flag Day on Tuesday evening. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” Over 100 years later, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.

Three Village residents gathered on Flag Day to dispose of many flags which are no longer serviceable. These flags have served as a reminder of our nation and those who have defended our freedom. The United States Flag Code states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” The ceremony was led by former Regent of the Anna Smith Strong Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and current TVHS

trustee Holly Brainard. She was joined by Boy Scouts of America Troops 355 and 70, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, who retired and raised a flag on the property, while Ward Melville High School Seniors played taps. Members from the Stony Brook and Setauket fire departments oversaw the flag burning that began with tattered flags presented by state Assemblyman Steve Englebright, county Legislator Kara Hahn and Town of Brookhaven Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich. —Photos by North Island Photography & Films
