Emma S. Clark Memorial Library has helped with the dilemma of forgetting to bring a book to the beach.

Emma Clark has hosted a Little Free Library at West Meadow Beach in July and August since 2016, to inspire beachgoers to read, share and reuse, according to a press release from the library.

This “Take a Book or Leave a Book” concept is one that embodies recycling and community. The structure was made from reclaimed materials and is maintained by library teen volunteers. It is located under the pavilion at the beach. There is no need to live in Three Village to share in this give and take project, as long as you are a visitor of the beach. These books are donated by the public and are not owned by Emma Clark. The Little Free Library books should not be returned to the library’s building located at 120 Main St. in Setauket.

Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich attended the installation on June 24 to show his support of this outreach service to the community.

“The Little Free Library at West Meadow Beach is just a great opportunity to put books into people’s hands,” he said. “I love the community spirit embodied in those little structures and knowing that favorite books can be shared among neighbors in this way. By the way, when you’re there check out the bottom of the little library case — it was constructed from an old wooden library chair.”

Little Free Libraries have become an international phenomenon since their inception in 2010, and Little Free Library was established as a nonprofit organization in 2012 in Wisconsin. According to the official Little Free Library website, there are over 100,000 registered book-sharing boxes worldwide. Emma Clark’s Little Free Library at West Meadow Beach is registered on www. littlefreelibrary.org and can be found on the site’s official map of all Little Free Libraries across the United States and over 100 countries worldwide.

Port Jefferson Fire Department hosts Fourth of July parade

BY RAYMOND JANIS EDITOR1@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Amid picturesque weather, a convoy of fire trucks, tractors, music and dance groups and assorted vehicles marched through the streets of Port Jefferson for this year’s annual Fourth of July parade.

Hosted by the local fire department, the procession included a large collection of first responders. Joining PJFD were fire departments and ambulance corps representing Terryville,

Setauket, Mount Sinai and Centereach, among many others.

Also in attendance were dance groups that twirled and danced between fire units. In a strong display of patriotism, various community groups, volunteer organizations and hospital employees made appearances as well.

Hundreds of spectators lined the village blocks to watch the spectacle as it unfolded during the late morning. The parade lasted nearly two hours in its entirety.

The paradoxical Founding Father who left an imprint on Long Island

BY RICH ACRITELLI DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM As we put the Fourth of July festivities behind us, it is important that we keep in mind what this day celebrates: The signing of the Declaration of Independence, primarily authored by Thomas Jefferson, whose legacy continually evolves.

Jefferson was born April 13, 1743, in Shadwell in the Colony of Virginia into a privileged family supported by the labor of slaves.

His father was a planter and a surveyor.

Jefferson later inherited his father’s land and slaves and began a lifelong project to construct his well-known estate, Monticello. But Jefferson was destined for a higher calling and was thrust into public life, where he would shape the course of American history.

Jefferson was a tall young man, but also awkward and reserved. He demonstrated, however, an early penchant for writing, a skill that served him well as he climbed the ranks of the Virginia House of Burgesses and later the Continental Congress.

Colonial leaders quickly grasped Jefferson’s compositional brilliance, but also observed he said very little. John Adams, who had worked closely with Jefferson in the Continental Congress, once said, “During the whole time I sat with him in Congress, I never heard him utter three sentences together.” Jefferson was a man of the written — not spoken — word.

While serving in Congress in 1776, Jefferson captured the spirit of his era and produced the Declaration of Independence, a radical pronouncement of America’s uniqueness from the rest of the world, justifying why it was necessary for the 13 American colonies to break off from Great Britain.

Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Millennia of human conflict and conquest had emphasized man’s separateness in the eyes of his fellow man. America is the only society in history predicated on the notion of human equality, the only place on Earth that had the audacity to proclaim that humans can harmoniously coexist regardless of their religion or race or ethnic background or any other criterion.

While Jefferson presented Americans this challenge, it is worth noting that he did not embody the ideals of the Declaration in his own life. Jefferson was a slaveholder, his place in society secured by the labor of slaves.

As we reflect upon the Declaration, it is questionable whether its author even believed

in its principles. Despite the conflict between his head and his heart, Jefferson’s words impact us to this day.

Inspiring generations on Long Island

Jefferson’s patriotic fervor was felt undoubtedly here on Long Island. Most notably, the great Long Island patriot William Floyd had joined the revolutionary cause, becoming the only Suffolk County resident to sign the Declaration of Independence. Floyd served in the Suffolk County Militia and was a representative to the Continental Congress. He risked his life and property to resist British authority.

Setauket native Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge is another local hero of the American Revolution.

Tallmadge is best known for his reconnaissance efforts, collecting information from the Setauket Culper Spy Ring.

During a daring raid in 1780, Tallmadge landed near Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai with a contingent of American soldiers. Undetected, they marched to Smith’s Point, attacked, and took this British supply base at Carmans River and the Great South Bay. Under orders from Gen. George Washington, Tallmadge destroyed large quantities of hay that was stored in Coram.

Floyd and Tallmadge are just two of the many local examples of service and sacrifice that occurred on Long Island during the revolutionary period. These figures fought to form a new nation, a nation that was first articulated by Jefferson.

Stony Brook resident keeps on running

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A familiar runner jogging along Stony Brook roads stands out from the others.

“My claim to fame is that I’m still running at 85,” Steven Fuchs said.

The Stony Brook resident said he has been running for more than 40 years, and earlier this year he traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, for the USATF 2022 Masters 5 Km Championships, where he placed first in the men’s 85-and-over category, finishing the race in 45 minutes, 31 seconds.

He was modest about the win.

“I was very excited about it,” he said. “It was great fun, but there’s not many people running anymore at my age.”

His daughter Dorothy O’Brien on the other hand was impressed.

“It’s pretty amazing,” she said. “I think it’s inspiring.”

Fuchs said runners who register trace their running history to find out what times they have achieved in past races. The grandfather of five said he believes this deters some from the national race because they aren’t inspired to travel when they see others signed up who have run faster in other races. However, he said it’s always fun to travel, get together with fellow runners and talk about their love of the sport.

Fuchs said when he was younger he was always competitive, and he recommended the sport as well as the races to others.

“It’s great exercise, and I enjoy it,” he said.

“People who are runners are wonderful people.”

Not one to slow down, Fuchs is still involved in real estate investment, which has been his decadeslong career.

To keep moving, he said, “is a great lesson in life.” And his advice is to “pick an activity that you can continue with.”

In the past, he played tennis but had problems with one of his shoulders, and he said he’s been lucky that his knees have held up so he can

Restaurant manager Ann Tipley said she was standing at the front counter when it happened, and the car stopped a few feet from her. She said it was scary to witness.

“Fortunately, no one got hurt,” she said. “It was just a big mess.”

The door has already been replaced, and Tipley said they are currently waiting for the glass for the door.

The Setauket Fire Department and police officers responded to the incident, and the driver and passenger of the SUV remained on the scene.

Staff members quickly cleaned up the broken glass, and the restaurant remained open for business.

“What I like particularly about running is that I don’t have to get a foursome together to play golf, or I don’t have to get a partner to play doubles in tennis,” he said. “I just put on my sneakers at 2 or 3 in the afternoon and run all by myself.”

He tries to do so daily to West Meadow Beach and back home, and is no stranger to the local races. His first race was one in the 1970s that started at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library.

Through the decades, he has participated in local races, including Soles for All Souls organized by All Souls Episcopal Church in Stony Brook, the Smithtown Running of the Bull, Lt. Michael P. Murphy Run Around the Lake in Ronkonkoma as well as several in Sayville.

While he sticks now to 5K races, when he was younger he said he ran longer ones, including the 10K, which is approximately 6.2 miles, and half marathons.

“As I get older, the distances tend to get shorter,” the runner said.

He’s learned with training that a runner has to take it easy at times.

“You can’t knock your brains out every time you go out to train,” Fuchs said. “I just jog around very slowly, and where I put my effort is the day of the race. That’s my real work day.”

His secrets to keeping fit through the years

include running and eating right. He also doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol.

“For me it has worked,” he said. “I’m lucky.”

He recommends running for those looking to stay in shape and his advice is to get the right shoes.

“You’re not necessarily in competition all the time,” he said. “You can go at your own pace. You can do it when you want to do it.”

Fuchs recommends the races as a good opportunity to get together with those who share the same interest, and he plans to travel to the national championships in 2023.

“I fully expect to be back again next year,” he said.

and James Madison all visited the local area, a place that had sacrificed much and contributed greatly to the independence movement.

Jefferson and Madison traveled extensively throughout New York state and New England, eager to meet their new countrymen. Both leaders stayed in Center Moriches, where they met with Floyd near his estate. All his life, Jefferson had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Intrigued by the various Native American dialects and cultures, he met with several tribes in eastern Long Island.

Jefferson notably encountered the Unkechaug [Patchogue] Indian Nation. Because most of this tribe spoke English, Jefferson successfully transcribed many parts of their language. His research has helped keep alive cultural studies into one of the two remaining Native American groups here on Long Island today.

From Drowned Meadow to Port Jefferson

Jefferson’s influence can also be felt through the history of Port Jefferson, formerly known as Drowned Meadow. This now-bustling village was first settled in 1682, located within the heart

of Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven.

In 1836, the people of Drowned Meadow renamed their community in Jefferson’s honor.

During his address to Congress in 1806, Jefferson highlighted the importance of connecting the United States through infrastructure programs. He said that “new channels of communication will be opened between the States; the lines of separation will disappear, their interests will be identified, and their union cemented by new and indissoluble ties.”

Port Jefferson has always been known for the industriousness of its people, as a productive and forward-looking community. Look no further than its shipbuilding history or The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry to see how infrastructure investments from the past keep us connected to this day.

Port Jefferson is one of 30 towns and counties across the United States that have been named in Jefferson’s honor. Jefferson surely appreciated Long Island — its natural beauty, its indigenous cultures and the local patriots who provided necessary intelligence to gain tactical advantages over the British forces.

Suffolk County Health Department announces first case of Monkeypox

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced July 1 the first individual confirmed orthopoxvirus, or monkeypox, case in Suffolk County. The person, who was seen by a local health care provider, is following isolation protocols from home. Testing for orthopoxvirus was conducted at the New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center Laboratory.

Suffolk County health officials are communicating with the individual and will contact persons who may have been exposed. The case is one of 96 currently confirmed orthopoxvirus cases in New York State and approximately 400 in the United States to date.

“While the current risk to the general public is low, we urge the public as well as health care providers in Suffolk County to be aware that this rare virus has been found in the region and to know the signs and symptoms and manner of transmission of the monkeypox virus,” said Suffolk County Health Commissioner Gregson Pigott.

Anyone with a rash that looks like monkeypox should talk to their healthcare provider, even if they don’t think they had contact with someone who has monkeypox.

The New York State Department of Health has alerted New York health care providers so they have information regarding reporting and case testing.

Recent monkeypox cases in the region have involved a rash in the genital region and may include other symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and pain when swallowing, before or after the rash appearance. Most infections last two to four weeks.

Alternatives to recharge basins must be considered for new developments

BY JONATHAN KORNREICH Numerous residents and organizations within my council district have expressed concerns to my office regarding the Winmar Homes application to develop the southeast corner of Pond Path and Upper Sheep Pasture Road in East Setauket. The current proposal is for an eight-lot residential subdivision on 6.63 acres, along with a recharge basin and the construction of a cul-de-sac into the development from Upper Sheep Pasture Road.

Setauket is one of the oldest areas in the Town of Brookhaven with historic sites from the American Revolutionary War time period and older. Directly across the street from the Selleck property is the Merritt-Hawkins House — at 512 Pond Path, East Setauket — a town-owned property and one of the earliest homes in Setauket, originally belonging to the Hawkins family. The property was designated a Brookhaven landmark in April 2005 and was added to the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places in August 2007. Immediately adjacent to the Merritt-Hawkins House is Nassakeag Elementary School. The Selleck property is one of the oldest farms in the area and, together with MerrittHawkins House, formed the Merritt-Hawkins Homestead, a significant part of our local history.

several requests relating to this property, including an appeal to save the old Selleck farmhouse or clustering the houses to make room for open space preservation. The most urgent of these requests, however, and the one which has spurred the greatest alarm within the community, is the proposed siting of a recharge basin, or sump, on the highly visible corner of Upper Sheep Pasture Road and Pond Path.

Historically, the creation of sumps like this has been a common approach, resulting in over 1,300 sumps throughout the Town of Brookhaven. In addition to being a maintenance burden on the Highway Department and a consistent source of complaints from residents, these recharge basins do little to remediate the water being funneled back into our aquifers, especially with respect to the removal of nitrogen and other substances.

Other solutions to stormwater management are available. The practice of Low Impact Development incorporates an “all of the above” strategy which includes rain gardens, bioswales, permeable surfaces and dry wells, elements which are meant to recreate and enhance natural processes. By reducing the movement of water across paved surfaces, these elements assist in the prevention and capture of surface contaminants before they flow back into a sump, whose sole function is to get water back underground as quickly as possible.

nuanced approach which is sensitive to each site’s specific topography, soil composition and other factors. I will continue to advocate for the adoption of this more thoughtful approach, both on the Selleck site and as a part of the town’s planning process going forward.

Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine [R] has been highly supportive of this approach and has facilitated discussions with professionals in Town Hall to explore other options. There is no question that a sump is only one of several modalities for managing stormwater runoff, and we are hoping that more time is set aside to study this issue and develop a strategy that all

stakeholders will be comfortable with.

The town Planning Board is an independent body, and members of the Town Council cannot exert undue influence over their deliberations, but I cannot remain silent while the wishes of the community I represent are overlooked. My hope is that the developer and the Planning Board will come together to create a site plan which is mutually acceptable to all stakeholders, including the residents.

Norman Goodman, distinguished sociology professor, dies at 88

Norman Goodman, a distinguished teaching and service professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Sociology who enjoyed a 56-year career at Stony Brook University, died June 26 at the age of 88.

Goodman, a member of the university’s founding generation who began teaching sociology at Stony Brook in 1964, was honored in August 2021 by the University Senate, which officially designated the Senate Conference Room in Psychology B as the Norman Goodman Senate Conference Room.

Admired not only for his dedication to his students and his field but also for his passion and advocacy, Goodman, a sociologically oriented social psychologist, was the first person in SUNY to be awarded two distinguished professorships — one for service and one for teaching. He was one of the early members of the Department of Sociology, and was active in shaping it from the beginning. Goodman chaired the department for 20 years (from 1973 to 1989, and again from 2000 to 2004), during which time he sought to recruit others to the department. Thanks to his years of service at Stony Brook and his active engagement in the university, Goodman advised the department

Arthur W. Gureck

Artie W. Gureck, 89, of Highland Beach, Florida, and formerly of Stony Brook, passed away peacefully at home on June 22 with his family by his side.

Artie was born on Oct. 1, 1932, in Hempstead, New York. He was the son of Arthur B. and Adeline (Seebeck) Gureck.

Artie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Arlyne, his four children and their spouses (Cindi and Jim Klecak, Artie and Pattie Gureck, Bryan Gureck and Tasso Chriss, Tom and Tanya Gureck), seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Longtime residents of Stony Brook, Artie and Arlyne were snowbirds for 23 years and became permanent residents of Highland Beach in 2020.

Artie spent his career with Jonwal Construction Company in St. James and was president of the company when he retired.

A kind and generous man, Artie found many ways to support his community. He served in the Coast Guard during the Korean War, ushered and served on the Vestry at St. James Church and was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. Artie was a member of the Stony Brook Fire Department and actively participated in the department into his 80s. He served as a firefighter, first responder on the rescue

based on his institutional memory and firsthand knowledge of the procedures and policies.

Goodman also served as president of the Arts and Sciences Senate, twice president of the University Faculty Senate, served as vice president for the senate for three terms, and edited the SUNY University Senate Bulletin for more than 20 years. He was also active in the Executive Committee and Committee on Academic Planning and Resource Allocation, among others.

“During his over half-century of leadership at Stony Brook University, Norm helped several generations of faculty, staff, and students understand the importance of university governance,” said Nancy Tomes, SUNY distinguished professor of History and University Senate president from 20182020. “During my term as president of the University Senate, he inspired me and challenged me to do the best job I could.

Although we sometimes disagreed, we did so with deep appreciation for the other’s point of view. Norm was my mentor and my friend. I will miss him greatly.”

Frederick Walter, president of the University Senate from 2010-2014, said that Goodman was a significant presence and a “fount of knowledge” about the university and its governance. “Norm was adamant that the staff were as important to the university as squad, captain of the Hook and Ladder Company and commissioner.

Artie enjoyed golfing and boating, and was a longstanding member of the Stony Brook Yacht Club. He loved spending time with his family. He was a loving and devoted husband to Arlyne, and their love and strong bond were an inspiration to all.

He was a wonderful and supportive father, grandfather, great grandfather, father-inlaw and uncle. Artie’s grandchildren always looked forward to seeing and playing with “Pop” when they were younger and admired him even more when they became adults.

Artie touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 14 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 188 S. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, Florida.

Jeffrey A. Morris

Jeffrey A. Morris, of Setauket, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 29.

Born in Sayville in 1940, he resided in Setauket for the past 46 years. He was a loving husband to Madeline, a devoted father to Christopher and Nicole and a beloved grandfather to Alex and Matthew.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Kenneth Morris, and brother, Peter Morris all of Sayville.

A 45-year banking career included working at European American Bank formerly Federation Bank and Trust and Franklin National Bank.

An Eagle Scout, he was an active volunteer throughout his life serving on the Boards of Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts of America, The American Heart Association, Nassau Chapter and past Board President of the Long Island Advocacy Center for 25 years. He was a tireless fundraising committee chairman for numerous hospitals, charities and not for profit organizations. He served on the Town of Brookhaven’s Advisory Committee for the Handicapped and the Town of Huntington’s Business Advisory Council. In his retirement, he volunteered preparing tax returns for senior citizens through AARP at the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library and served as local coordinator for the Three Village area providing tax counseling for the elderly.

Goodman once said that he was particularly proud of his role in facilitating Stony Brook’s transition to a major, internationally renowned institution of higher education and being a major player in the effort to ensure that campus policies and practices are established through a process of shared governance.

Goodman was the author/co-author/coeditor of 10 books, including four textbooks in Introductory Sociology and two textbooks in Marriage and the Family. Goodman also served on the SUNY Distinguished Academy Board from its conception until his retirement last year.

“Norm was an inspiring figure, an impressive stalwart with a tremendous legacy,” said Nkiru Nzegwu, chair of the board of the SUNY Distinguished Academy and a distinguished professor at Binghamton University. “His thoughtful comments moved discussions forward, and his willingness to always speak his mind displayed his deep and abiding commitment to the Distinguished Academy both as an organization that represents the best of SUNY faculty and campuses, and one with an abiding mission of excellence that served the State as a whole.” was a member of the first Men’s Double Championship Team of the Port Jefferson Country Club’s Richard O’Rourke Memorial Tournament for two consecutive years.

He once rode a motorcycle across the United States from Colorado back to Long Island. He lived a full, honest and fruitful life. A good friend to many, he described himself as a curmudgeon by nature although he fought against it all his life. He will be missed by many.

Mary E. Moeller

The family of Mary E. Moeller, who passed away on March 23, will hold a memorial at the Setauket Neighborhood House on July 8 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she spent the greater part of her life in Setauket, a community she loved. Besides raising her four children, she retired from Abraham & Straus and went on to spend 27 years working at the circulation desk at Emma S. Clark Library. She was active in the Three Village Historical Society, St. James Lutheran Church, the Board of Elections, and the local food bank. She shared her cooking, baking and sewing skills with friends and strangers alike.

Capt. Brian A. McAllister, chairman emeritus of McAllister Towing, dies at 89

SUBMITTED BY MCALLISTER TOWING Capt. Brian A. McAllister, a distinguished and visionary leader of the maritime industry, died in New York on June 29 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosemary; his sons, Buckley and Eric; and four grandchildren.

A 1956 engineering graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College, Capt. McAllister went on to obtain a chief engineer’s license before changing careers to work as a deck officer. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as Lt. Junior Grade and was executive officer on the USS Lake County (LST 80). In 2017, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by his alma mater.

He was proud to be a member of the fourth generation of the family maritime company which had been founded in 1864, McAllister Towing. The company owns Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry.

A repeated pattern of disaster, opportunity, and personal strength of character enabled Capt. McAllister to expand the company.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he established operations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Bonaire, Panama, and Peru.

Later in his career, he expanded the business to Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. This growth was driven by a mixture of navigational know-how, technological innovation, a cadre of excellent mariners, and a passion for investing in the transportation industry. He rarely boarded a vessel he didn’t love.

The 1970s and 1980s were also characterized by long years of labor strife.

The sharp downturn in the price of oil in the 1980s dramatically changed the competitive landscape throughout the industry. Hundreds of incidents of violence between union and non-union seamen were reported during this period. Capt. McAllister kept the company running by personally commanding vessels and piloting ship operations in New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk.

In the 1990s, he was involved in acrimonious litigation over control of the company. In 1998, he became the first sole owner of McAllister Towing since its founding in a transaction that spun off its foreign subsidiaries. He used this reorganization as an impetus to completely rebuild the fleet. Under his leadership, the company designed and constructed numerous tugboats and ferries equipped with technologies such as flanking rudders, Z-drives, low emission engines, advanced fire-fighting, and emergency response, some

Late in life, the boy who went to college to play basketball discovered the beauty and importance of maritime history. In 2005, he supported the publication of an awardwinning title, “Tugboats of New York,” by George Matteson. In 2015, he participated in writing the book “McAllister Towing, 150 Years of Family Business.” In 2016, he was featured in “Heroes of the Harbor” by Marian Betancourt. In 2018, he was thanked

by Jennifer Egan for providing background for her book, “Manhattan Beach.”

Capt. McAllister served on numerous boards including the South Street Seaport Museum, the Maritime Association of New York/New Jersey, the National Maritime Historical Society, the American Bureau of Shipping, and the American Steamship Owners Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association. He was the recipient of many awards and honors including the 2012 National Maritime Historical Society Distinguished Service Medal, the 2013 Seamen’s Church Institute Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2015 Massachusetts Maritime Academy Maritime Person of the Year, a 2015 induction into the International Maritime Hall of Fame, and a 2017 Honorary Doctorate of Science from the State University of New York.

In his commencement speech to the 2017 graduates of SUNY Maritime, McAllister told the graduates that the secret to his success had been a good education, the willingness to take on new challenges, and the luck of having many friends to help him to seize opportunities.

He encouraged the Class of 2017 that some of the greatest assets to help advance their careers would be their classmates. He further counseled them with his enduring motto: “And keep the flag flying.”

In post-Roe America, locality is the mentality

“All politics is local.” This expression rings truer today than ever before.

The Framers of the U.S. Constitution envisioned a system of federalism for the United States — one in which the national government was assigned a select number of well-defined powers, with all other powers not delegated by the Constitution reserved to the states. Over the course of American history, however, more and more powers have been delegated to the federal government.

Right now, we are witnessing a turning point in a century-long power struggle between the federal government and the states.

Democratic presidents such as Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson incrementally augmented the size of the federal government and expanded the scope of its powers. After a century of concentrating power in Washington, the U.S. Supreme Court is now undoing that legacy, returning decisionmaking authority to lower levels of government.

Two recent SCOTUS opinions have dramatically altered the balance of power in this country. The court ruled in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. In New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, the court overruled New York State’s proper-cause licensing requirement for concealed carry of a handgun, making it harder for New York and other states to regulate concealed carry.

The one interconnecting theme of both of these decisions is that the federal government is yielding much of its power to the states, putting greater pressure on state and local governments to make decisions on behalf of the people.

No longer are the days of FDR, who saw the federal government as the vehicle to drive the national economy with his New Deal.

No longer are the days of LBJ, whose Great Society program sought to eliminate poverty and racial disparities using the federal government as its engine. In this post-Roe America, the power of the federal government is waning, taken out of its hands and placed in the hands of the states.

There are some possible benefits to the decentralization of federal power. For starters, this may reduce voter polarization and division in the United States. With fewer decision-making powers, the stakes will be reduced for congressional and presidential elections.

While national security and interstate commerce will always be the domain of the federal government, a host of domestic issues may soon return to the states, meaning state and local elections may soon carry much greater weight.

As power shifts away from the federal government and into our backyards, local residents must maintain an active interest in their state and local legislatures as these bodies will be deciding upon the issues that matter the most. Citizens can — and should — stay informed by reading their local newspapers, where information on these matters is most accessible. And they should remember to write letters to the editor because this remains a tried-and-true method to reach and persuade one’s fellow citizens.

Roe v. Wade has been overturned, and this is just the beginning. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, former Vice President Mike Pence [R], and other Republicans have been very clear about their desire to impose a federal ban on abortion and eliminate more rights resting on the same legal principle as Roe: contraception, samesex relationships, and marriage and interracial marriage.

Beyond social issues, this court has upheld racial gerrymandering and voter suppression and has signaled it will allow state legislatures to overturn election results.

Some New York Republican voters might say, “This is great. Democrats will never win nationally again. I don’t have to worry that my wife — or daughter or niece — will die from an untreated ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage here, since we’re a blue state. Besides, if the GOP goes too far, the people will vote them out.”

Here is a warning: If the Republican Party achieves its implicit goal of singleparty minority rule in the U.S., it will not turn out well for Republican voters either. Under single-party rule, every red state law will become a federal law. Once the rule of law is fully gone, what makes you think any Republican could ever be voted out? What makes you imagine Republican primaries will be free and fair? In de facto single-party systems — like China, Russia, and increasingly Turkey and Hungary — the law is irrelevant. All that matters is loyalty to the faction that is currently in power. A recent Republican TV ad with violent imagery (“hunting RINOs”) illustrates the threat of internal GOP purges.

Along with the vivid testimony at the Jan. 6 hearings about the coordinated criminal scheme to nullify the 2020 election, this ruling proves it is no longer exaggeration to say the Republican Party is now a theocratic fascist movement, with judges lying to get confirmed, elected officials plotting a coup to stay in power, and voters willing to embrace delusions, reject democracy and use violence to get their way.

The coup failed but the U.S. did not have an orderly transfer of power in 2021, a shocking first in modern American history.

No patriotic American should vote for any candidate who supported subverting the 2020 election — as GOP gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin did. No self-respecting woman should vote for any Republican unless the party changes course. Catholic and Jewish

conservatives should open their eyes to the hard-core bigoted base of the party they are aligning with. Once they don’t need your votes, the evangelical Christian right will purge you from the movement.

The Democratic Party certainly has its flaws, but Democratic voters and politicians have consistently supported the rule of law, voting rights and democratic norms. Democrats concede when they lose elections. They strive to persuade more voters, not overturn elections by “finding” nonexistent votes.

If moderate Republicans won’t save democracy for the rest of us, they should at least be smart and save democracy for their future selves and families.

Otherwise, this is just the beginning of an inevitable slide into theocratic fascism.

Anarchy is on the rise

I would like to clarify our recent Three Village school vote. The school budget passed by only 66 votes in spite of a gross advantage of the school union sending massive mailings to families full of their propaganda. I hardly call that an endorsement.

I am thinking along the lines of enough of spewing the “battleground” of torches of divisiveness, hatred and bias for the well-being of our community and the health of our country.

It is becoming very apparent that we are experiencing anarchy at every level: in our finance and economy, at the border, in the classroom, in agriculture and food supply, gas prices. [Do you remember when gas was $1.79 a gallon? Former President Trump [R] had the insight to fill the reserves with cheap gas, which are now depleted.]

I’m sure many of us are realizing that nothing makes sense. Since the Biden administration [D] has taken over there has been an “anti-American” movement.

They are uninterested in carrying out the basic functions of legitimate government required for the protection of the rights of “We, the American citizen” — in other words, the enforcement of criminal law and the protection of the sovereignty of the United States.

Enough of this administrative state circumventing our Constitution and their polymorphous lawmaking that benefit themselves and many laws that are not enforced.

Andrew Pollack, a father who lost his daughter in the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, created a website: securemyschoolnow.com. As a result of his tragedy, he has helped many and speaks with common sense on three important issues: background checks — some 50% of mass gun shooters were seeing mental

health care providers, enforce the gun laws and protect the schools.

Yes, “our children deserve better.”

The U.S. Capitol has protection, all politicians and Hollywood elite have protection, athletes have protection, airports, political conventions. Why not our schools? NYC schools have it right: metal detectors, one-way locked entrances and security.

Here’s another of one of many senseless “operation chaos” situations: A deliberate humanitarian crisis at the border with an overwhelming flow of illegals — no vaccines or masks, sex trafficking, drug cartels with tons of fentanyl coming into our country killing many American citizens.

Protecting our schools and protecting our border go hand in hand. American Marxism has infiltrated our country in all areas and this is why anarchy is on the rise. To quote Trump, “Politicians are all talk, no action.” Our dilemma now is any action taken is not for “America.”

A matter of freedom of religion among other issues

Your June 30 editorial [“A giant step backward for womankind”] is terrific. I’d just like to expand on a few of your points. You question whether the Supreme Court allowed religion to motivate them and say that people from various religious backgrounds debate when life begins.

This is a crucial point. Judaism says that life begins with birth — not conception, abortion is not murder, the life of the mother is saved when the fetus threatens her physical or emotional well-being and a fetus resulting from rape or incest may be aborted. Other religions have other views and should be respected.

This matter is one of freedom of religion among other issues. In a free and pluralistic society, each woman should make her own decision. Politicians and courts should stay out of it.

Your editorial urges people to vote for candidates that will support freedom of abortion. I would point out that our Congressman Lee Zeldin [R-NY1], now running for state governor, has supported anti-abortion legislation which takes away a woman’s right to choose. He also would endanger us by applauding the Supreme Court striking down the 100-year-old New York law limiting guns. Finally, as an acolyte of former President Donald Trump [R], Zeldin voted against certifying the election. For all these reasons, he must not be our governor.

Modern messages for a modern reality

read bumper stickers, buttons, fortune cookies and messages on T-shirts. They are a form of poetry that captures a moment, an approach, an attitude, and a message in fewer words than some of the soupier birthday cards.

Like birthday cards, sometimes these messages work, are amusing, evoke a reaction, or make me laugh for intentional and unintentional reasons.

In the modern world, in which so many interactions seem less than optimal or contrary to the intentions, I D. None have some suggested messages that reflect of the above the current state of

— Please don’t interrupt. I’m in the middle of looking busy. When I started working many

years ago, someone told me to balance between looking busy and being under control. She suggested I walk quickly and purposefully, even if just to the bathroom, to suggest that I’m too busy to tackle something new that might involve lots of administrative work.

— Yes, I am talking to you. Those of you old enough to have seen the Robert De Niro film “Raging Bull” will understand this one instantly. This message captures the prevalence of confrontations.

— I have no idea what’s good. I don’t eat here.

Diners often ask waiters and waitresses, “what’s good.” More often than not, they tell people what’s popular dishes or their specials. The subtext here is that some of them don’t, can’t or wouldn’t eat where you’re eating, especially after spending considerable time in the kitchen.

— Everything and nothing is special today.

Keeping with the dining theme, while blending in some grade inflation, waiters could provide something philosophical for their diners to consume.

— I believe in building suspense. The

assignment, the job, or even the entree may be later than someone wanted. This message could suggest the tardiness was deliberate and was designed to enhance appreciation and add drama. So, you’re welcome.

— Sure, you can ask. I like the buttons people wear at Yankees games that encourage fans to ask a question. On a day when these customer service professionals are feeling tired or hung over, they could don messages that encourage people to move along or to figure out how to drive home to Pennsylvania from the Bronx on their own.

— How can I appear to help you? Life is all about optics. Yes, we should be helping and yes, people are paid to help each other, in person, on phone and on the Internet. Sometimes, the person (or artificial intelligence programs) that is offering assistance isn’t delivering much.

— I brought my own questions, thanks. I would love it if a politician wore this button to a debate.

On one level, it could suggest the candidate has questions that are hopefully substantive for his or her opponent. On the other, it could be an honest

way of acknowledging the disconnect between a question about the environment and an answer about the person’s commitment to family.

— What can you do for me? This is a way of turning the tables, literally, on a hostile or inappropriate customer. It also discourages people from asking too much of someone who is not eager to deliver.

— Is there anything else I can’t do for you? I’ve been on numerous calls with people who haven’t done anything, particularly when dealing with traveling details, who then ask if there’s anything else they can help me with. When they haven’t helped me with the first question, it’s hard to imagine they can help with a second. A more honest message might suggest that they also anticipate not being able to provide any help with a second problem or question.

— What did you get me for my birthday? People often want, or expect, something, even from strangers, on their birthday. They don’t often consider that the person from whom they expect service, help or extra treatment had a birthday they likely missed.

Remember that bit about pledging our sacred Honor?

Are you worried about what’s going to happen to our country?”

This question was posed to me by a younger person I know. He was clearly worried by current events, and with good reason. Our nation is facing a number of serious problems, and, in fact, so is most of the rest of the world.

His question made me think back to some of the chaotic times I remember. Polarization is a painful word being used to describe the United States today, but there were other times Between in my short lifetime when our country was you and me seriously divided.

BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF I have an early memory of signs hanging in our apartment house elevator. “Impeach Truman,” they urged. I don’t think I knew what they meant, but people on the streets were heatedly saying the same thing. I

knew Truman was president, but I certainly did not know anything about impeachment, and I had never before heard of Douglas McArthur, who had been relieved of his command in the Far East for disagreeing with Truman over Korean War tactics. That was a time of polarization, and tensions were high, even in my neighborhood of New York City. The Chicago Tribune editorialized, “The American nation has never been in greater danger.”

Our country moved on.

Everyone who was alive in the 60s well remembers the torments of that decade.

Both Kennedy and Martin Luther King were assassinated, civil rights legislation drove friends apart, the Vietnam War caused endless demonstrations and riots, and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968 was a frightful militarized spectacle epitomizing the nation’s divisions and chaos. It seemed our nation was being torn apart. People wondered if the country would survive.

Our country moved on.

There was Watergate in the 70s and a president of the United States was forced to

Our country moved on.

You get the point. Severe problems have always periodically challenged America, our stability and our way of life. There have been those with evil intent and there have been true heroes. We have been challenged regularly, we have come together and we have moved on.

July 4th, we celebrated our independence, and the flag that belongs to all of us. In our small town America, up and down the Island, we paraded together, fire departments and police departments, conservatives and liberals, Blacks and whites and Latinos and Asians, gay and straight, lifers and choicers. We did so as Americans, proud of our nation despite its many faults, recognizing that we can make our country better even as we cheer the exceptionalism that makes immigrants risk and sometimes lose their lives to get here.

If you read through the Declaration of Independence, as I did this past weekend, you will see the values that bind us together. We must

not lose, in the struggles to find our way forward today, the respect in the ending sentence: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

Let us then start our healing not by putting power over country but by pledging to each other our sacred Honor. That will help unite us, to truly hear each other, and together we can move on. We always have, and together, we always will.

Ancestor began a new life on Long Island in 1700s

BY BEVERLY C. TYLER DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM William Bacon, my third great grandfather, left his home in the Midlands of England on June 12, 1794.

He booked passage on a ship out of Liverpool on June 22 and arrived at New York’s South Street Seaport on Aug. 23. He then traveled to Patchogue, Long Island, arriving on Aug. 28, 1794. Letters from his father and brothers between 1798 and 1824 and numerous trips I made to the villages of his youth provided the basis for this fictional letter to his father and mother.

In 1794, England was at war with France, as was most of Europe. The resultant curtailment of trade was having a very negative effect on the British economy. The impressment of American merchant ship crews by the British had brought America and England very close to war again. President George Washington was in his second term as the first president of the United States and had recently appointed Chief Justice John Jay to negotiate a treaty of commerce with England.

On Long Island, Selah Strong was again elected as president of the trustees of the Town of Brookhaven, a post he had held every year since 1780, three years before the end of the Revolutionary War. In Patchogue, the Blue Point Iron Works, run by a Mr. Smith, was in full operation and looking to England, especially the Midlands, for young men like William Bacon who came from a long line of lead miners and iron workers.

July 4, 1794 M. Matthew Bacon Alderwasley Parish of Wirksworth Derbyshire, England My Dearest Father & Mother, I am writing this letter at sea. We are twelve days out from Liverpool and expect

to arrive in New York before the end of next month. Today is Independence Day in America and as this is an American ship and crew, they celebrated the day with cannon fire and decorated the ship with flags. A special meal was prepared and the other passengers and I were included in the feast.

Sitting with these new friends and enjoying their hospitality, I realized for the first time how much I already miss home and family.

Last month, the day before I left, as I sat on the hillside above our home, I realized that there was a part of me that would stay there forever. The green hills of Alderwasley will remain forever in my memory as will your kind smile and patience with me as I prepared to undertake this journey.

My resolve in going has not diminished in spite of my love for my family, for my home, and for the gentle rolling hills I have so often walked. The position in Mr. Smith’s iron works I regard as a chance to flourish in a land of opportunity as many others have done before me. America also offers the chance to live free of the will of the Lord of the Manor. He has been good to you, and generous, but he owns the very hills and valleys where I was born and grew up. In America my opportunities are limitless.

Please write and tell me if any from Wirksworth or Alderwasley have volunteered for the cavalry or infantry and how the war goes. I will send you the prices of pig and bar iron in English money as well as the prices of beef and mutton in the same as soon as I can. If brother Samuel is still in Jamaica after

I arrive, ask him to come and see me when he goes through New York. The same for my brother Matthew if he comes to Philadelphia to trade as he plans.

I continue with great hope and anticipation and a deep sorrow at parting.
