Dandelion
BY SHANE ALFANO MINNESAUKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADE2
Before it’s white
It’s the gorgeous yellow
Does it change
Can you guess Yup
It changes from Gorgeous yellow
To white
Do you know what that means It’s soft
You blow it
And twirl it around
Then, the dandelion says Thank you
For spreading it’s seeds!

A message from the publisher
When I was 8 years old, my family went on a summer vacation to a small town about an hour north of New York City called Central Valley.
One night we went downtown for ice cream at the drugstore and were surprised to find the streets empty. When we walked to the firehouse, we saw the dispatcher sitting outside on a chair that was leaning against the building.
“Where is everyone?” I asked.
“Over at the Joneses,” he replied, indicating a house with a tilt of his head. “They just got one of them new television sets. Whole town’s watching Milton Berle.”
The idea of an empty town sparked my imagination, so I wrote an article about it and submitted it to the community newspaper.
How thrilled I was when the story appeared on the front page!
Imagine, then, how thrilled I am years later to be able to make it possible for other students to be published. I hope you enjoy seeing your words (and art) in print as much as I did. And still do.

Sways like it’s waving to you
The gown it wears
All the time
In the fall
It prefers to wear Red, orange And brown
When it’s winter
It goes to bed

The cows are flying around
Dogs are eating oatmeal
Chickens are watching movies

How did it happen?
No one really knows.

Clouds can Fly
Up in the Sky

The Proud American Flag
BY ALIX MULLANY NASSAKEAG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADE 5The Moonlight shines on the threading of Old Glory, Every string is lined with hope and togetherness, It reigns over the rounded hills, waving in beauty, Proudness fills my heart as it skips a beat, It’s unity looks out toward our great land, As if the victory was repeated in our history once again, Like the battle that was roaring And the bombs that were once whistling, I can imagine the flag waving in passion through the almost endless fight, As if the fire from the bombs dissipated, And Old Glory remained swishing and swaying gracefully, Possibility rings out to the world in the past, present and future, Soaking in honor and dazzling in greatness, Justice will glimmer and give the world peace, The great American flag and its Glory, The image disappeared leaving me taken aback saying to myself, “Our children will smile at the tale of this glorious evening, At midnight with this breathtaking sight, When we all remember the brawl for our freedom and independence, We see Old Glory, And we see the light.”

My Life-Changing Flag
BY ERIK BJORNEBY NASSAKEAG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADE 5It means freedom
It means patriotism
It is honor
It is love
And it means that I can grow up to be whatever I want
So it also means responsibility
Which not only comes with privilege
But is a privilege itself
And every day I grow from that privilege
The flag has raised me in a way it has made me the person that I am today
And I will continue to grow and thrive from the freedom this flag has provided
It has made me braver and stronger than I ever thought I could be
To the untrained eye it’s just a flag
To the trained eye it’s a super power with limitless imagination
And I just happen to have a trained eye
It symbolizes the ingenuity of our country
It has a purpose and meaning both mentally and spiritually
And last but not least, it is a way of life
And that is what the flag means to me
