BLUE The theme of this year’s charette was blue. As a class we decided to have a “blue rave” in which we all participated in different ways. My particular contribution was an instillation using xeroxed news stories on water pollution, which I then installed onto the wall and flooded with blue light. The interesting and conceptual ground of the project was the fact that the xerox machine distorted the information, much the way we do when polluting the environment. The blue bags of water projected over the instillation gave an ire glow of water that further added to the aesthetics.



This particular space for my instillation had pros and cons. The atmosphere connoted pollution, and the dark loud environment coupled well with the concept. Unfortunately the rest of the environment was so distracting that no one was able to understand what my installation was about. Due to the fact that it was dark and foggy, the readability was limited. This did hinder the concept. Had I time to do the installation over I would probably have a voice over of statistics on water pollution, and list rates of animals endangered by the water pollution. I felt particularly strong about this subject after a research paper I did on the “love canal.� Addressing social topics is an interest of mine. I would like my work to always mean something.




We set up our room with the intent of having everyone in the Art and Architecture Building come into our room. We had various blue foods along with blue themes throughout the setting. In order to establish an atmosphere there where videos projected while a fog machine and music were playing. This was a way for us to collaborate and be creative while still having fun.

In order to spread the word about the rave we all made posters to throw out at the start. This was a guerilla tactic to draw attention to our event. Although posters are always a great way to spread awareness, we should have considered hanging some up as well. This was successful in the fact that had we not had posters less people would have attended our event.

RAVE / BLUE We printed our posters on blue paper and threw them off the balconies. We should have thrown them in small sections instead of dumping them all over at once. When they were falling, they clumped together so we did not get the coverage that we were after. One thing that we did notice is that people did pick up the posters from the ground. That act in it’s self was evidence that the spread of awareness was successful.

The character development for Avatar was very intricate as the characters were rounded out in fragments which tied their stories together. By showing parallels in the relationships between the characters, the audience was able to engage in the narrative. The sequencing also relates back to the character development, and through a fragmented series of events leads the viewer forward. This also helps to keep track of all elements involved in the plot.

The sound in Avatar is very unique in the fact that the chirp of birds and bugs amerce the viewer into the themes of nature. This reiterates the concept of preservation and conservation. The ability to relate to current themes within society is a key concept in narratives. Reaching a young audience that will be able to relate and make a difference is the target audience in this film.



The 365 show that AIGA held in Knoxville had some very unique design pieces. Innovative and refreshing, these pieces all had a unique quality to them that reflected the creativity and ingenuity of the designer. All of the pieces were constructed in the appropriate context to the items displayed. The Charles Luck book, showcasing the stone company had an old time feel that felt reliable and trustworthy. The unique liberties that the designer took allowed an intimate peek into the companies inner workings, which created an interactive environment for the viewer. This gave a personal feel to the book and made the company more assessable to the client. The One Degree poster had the same effectiveness delivered in a different manner that captured the attention of the intended audience. Clean, cleaver, and to the point, the one degree of attitude does just what it claims; give a little attitude without being obvious or trite. The imagery along with the careful consideration to color is what makes the poster so successful. The smart branding has a way of getting to the point and yet does not scream. The negative space is carefully illustrated to move the viewer through the various systems of hierarchy, without becoming boring. These are two vary different examples of design that do the same job; they communicate beautifully.

Light Experiments



Expanding Horizons Team Missouri Position Expanding Horizons position during the 2009 competition was to create a home that created a sense of expansion and space that was beyond the 800 sq. feet, manipulating the space to create the illusion of surface area. The unfortunate aspect of there limiting design, only using one “pod” created an architectural barrier, placed them 18th in architecture. The use of outside landscape was also poorly crafted and placed, but the concept was strong. I think in retrospect that Team Missouri should have used multiple modular spaces to allow themselves more freedom in the design of the space. By allowing such limitations the concept was not fully realized. Promise To create a “large” comfortable living space that is almost completely automated via Chameleon. The week point it there promise was there lack of delivery. They promised the illusion of space but did not deliver. Also I think that the Chameleon system should have had more emphasis in there campaign.

Personality Being from Missouri, the team used sincerity as there selling personality, with a very down to earth design, while attempting to interweave competence through technology. Again more emphasis should have been placed on their technology. They had something very viable to promote and instead I felt like the emphasis was placed on the idea of expansion that was not delivered. Audience Their audience seemed to be fairly general, not specifically targeted to any certain group. I would say that the main point of there design is to target to middle class couples or singles from 30-60. More clarity could have been placed on this group although they ranked 11th in market viability.


The identity and signs somewhat communicated the concept, but it communicated through poor design. Overall the web site has it’s moments of pleasant moments but overall I would say that this was not Team Missouri’s strong point. The identity seemed to be forced at times with tacky drop shadows and warping text. Poorly designed graphics were also incorporated into the web site. The logo seemed to fit, but was static and uncreative. Also there were a variety of logos graphics and signs that cluttered the overall concept. Being a school that has competed four times, I am surprised that their design was not more elaborate and conceptualized. They ranked 19th in both engineering and comfort which was odd for the fact that they are seasoned veterans. Rolling Stones

Redrawing a logo was our first assignment to prepare us for logo iterations with our solar branding project. This was fun but also interesting because it forced us to learn the difficulties of logo design. This exercise truly made me appreciate the hard work that it takes to design a logo. I chose the Rolling Stones logo because they are one of my favorite bands. There logo is difficult to draw, but it was worth it.

The start of logo play began with the idea of using photography from the light experiments. After vectoring a few images, there started to be a feel of circularity. This idea of a circular object translated into spacial patterns. Although circularity was the most obvious place to start, there needed to be a feel of energy and a connection to the space. By working through some of these design elements, there became an array of beautiful imagery. The one thing to remember about logo design is the time and iteration involved. Without trial and error there is no way to design effectively.

Patterns are an important part of logo development. I became really fascinated with the idea of a person sitting on nothing. This development led to a mass amount of pattern design.

Patterns moving through space was a major focus of mine through out the project. These patterns became important to my work while I was iterating logo type. I felt that the logo type should express a rhythmic pattern, that illustrated the versatility of my process. Instead, my logo types became static and less indicative of the concept I was trying to achieve. The free flowing forms that worked so well in the patterns of my designs some how became obstructed with the formalities of type.

The concept of using the house design as a logo was also interesting. The Solar house has “duel” cores which interact with each other. The black and white version of the floor plans created a beautiful negative space. Using the idea of space or lack there of was a direction that I considered taking when designing the logo.

Using math was also a consideration when branding the house. The symbol for zero energy is a mathematical symbol for absolute zero. Also the idea of the house only touching in four places was also interesting. The house was also divided into 5x1 which subtracted equals four. The play with numbers was cleaver but lacked the personal qualities of the house. The house seemed to start taking on a more organic personality, which lead to further exploration into the sitting figure. These all seemed like great designs, but did not seem to connect with the house. The activity in the figure seemed too “gym� like and almost took on a separate branding project all together.


After considering both mathematical and organic, I tried to find a way to fuse them together. Reflecting what I had done with logo type I tried to incorporate the mathematical structure while referring back to the more organic circle.

Based on the idea of mathematical principles, I revisited an old design of mine. I reversed the image out, trying to illustrate movement in space and the harmony of numbers. This design was interesting but did not convey the concept.



Renaming the house was also a consideration to take into account when branding the solar house. Vim, which means life, was a suggestion that was brought up. Unfortunately the word vim was virtually unrecognizable to most people. The logos that came from the idea of vim were very successful, but conveying the concept is too important to ignore.

At this point in my process of the logo design I started considering combining ideas in order to push the design further conceptually. I used the ideas that I generated from the iterations of Vim and applied them to Living Light. This was interesting in the fact that not only did it generate an appealing shape, it also allowed further expression into the idea of sitting on air. Earlier in my phases of iteration I was working with the idea of people living in an invisible way. The concept of living light became very literal at that moment in my process. Applying that concept to the versatility of “Liv� became much more diverse and expressive.

When considering logos I decided to try to incorporate the 24 hour diagram. This was a challenge but the diagram I had made was the exact shape of the PV tubes used to supply the solar house with energy. The step seemed logical but the application was unsuccessful. In retrospect the old 24 hour diagram I had created seemed to be too static for the concept behind the house. I created a new diagram to take on a more circular fashion and illustrate movement. The new diagram seemed to have the motion I was looking for but lacked the integrity to be a logo.

The second portion of branding the solar house was to develop a language to treat the project. We started by deciding the best way to communicate in our own language, and then came together to use the same language. Once a color scheme had been established, we were able to focus our energy into the redesign of the diagrams. These diagrams needed to speak clear visually while still maintaining the overall aesthetics of the project. Everyone seemed to have a different way to interpret the same information. The information design that came from this process was clearly vital to our abilities as designers.

The wiring connection diagram was not included in the final project board. The diagram seemed redundant with the provided information already in existence. In retrospect, the wiring connection diagram might be able to be applied to the outside signs of the solar house. The clear and elementary way the information is presented seems very applicable for signs.

The process of working through the mechanical engineering diagram was very interesting. This gave me the chance to harmonize the information given instead of generating information. I enjoyed redesigning the diagrams because it gave me the chance to use my analytical perspective and apply it to a design that had to communicate the information clearly while still maintaining the aesthetics of the project.

The work of the UT SD team grows out of UT•zero’s long term commitment to develop Net-zero Energy Buildings that improve the quality of architecture and the building envelope in the 21st century for the State of Tennessee and beyond by focusing on stainability, energy, health and safety, and economy. In keeping with the original intent of UT•zero, our goal is to develop a modular house based on prefabricated components that will enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of both new and existing buildings. UT•zero was initiated as a project to study the integration of technology, energy efficient construction, and environmental sustainability with the intent to share knowledge with the region by engaging and educating academia, local businesses and builders, the industry and governmental constituencies, and the public.The UT SD Team embraces these goals as it seeks to compete with the best institutions from around the world.

The ut Solar Decathlon House will be based on three design principles: functionality, integration, and robustness. Functionality, the ability of a design to operate, is crucial to design considerations because of its influence on future technologies and research in the field of energy efficient homes. Seamlessly integrating systems is critical to the overall success of a functioning energy efficient house and should be considered in the initial design. Successful designs include optimizing electrical, mechanical, and architectural systems to enhance total house efficiency. The ut Solar Decathlon House will include an advanced control system that facilitates inter-communication between systems in an effort to autonomously control the efficiencies ofactive heating and cooling systems. Finally, the third engineering design precept, robustness, will ensure functionality over a wide range of operating conditions.

The ut•zero Prototype is a student-built project at ut that seeks opportunities for cross-disciplinary design education, and has enabled faculty and students from the Departments of Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design to collaborate through research, design, and construction of a prototype home of the future.

Our team combines the areas of architecture, engineering, interior design, and communications to develop and disseminate new concepts, prototypes, products, and methodologies for energy-efficient construction and integrated building design at the macro (building design and systems) and micro (components and materials) scales. The team will supplement regional resources with global expertise, with the provision that the design will always be guided by the ethic of appropriate technology, utilizing common systems when adequate and innovative or complex systems only when necessary. ut’s Solar Decathlon project will be based on the three technological design principles: functionality, integration, and robustness. As part of the branding for the solar decathlon we had to create a web site to compliment the branding. This gave us a chance to explore layout, and to further define the personality of the brand. The first web site I created was a little generic so in order to establish more personality I reworked the concept in order to further define my brand.

UT-Zero Mission Statement

The work of the UT SD team grows out of UT•zero’s long term commitment to develop Net-zero Energy Buildings that improve the quality of architecture and the building envelope in the 21st century for the State of Tennessee and beyond by focusing on stainability, energy, health and safety, and economy. In keeping with the original intent of UT•zero, our goal is to develop a modular house based on prefabricated components that will enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of both new and existing buildings. UT•zero was initiated as a project to study the integration of technology, energy efficient construction, and environmental sustainability with the intent to share knowledge with the region by engaging and educating academia, local businesses and builders, the industry and governmental constituencies, and the public.The UT SD Team embraces these goals as it seeks to compete with the best institutions from around the world.

Future The UT•zero Prototype is a student-built project at UT that seeks opportunities for cross-disciplinary design education, and has enabled faculty and students from the Departments of Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design to collaborate through research, design, and construction of a prototype home of the future.

The rework of the web site lead me to a more contemporary approach. Navigation away from a page has always been a issue for me when working with a web site, so this site is purely based in Java. All contents would stay on the page and act as a browser within the web site and would load automatically when clicked.

Future Our team combines the areas of architecture, engineering, interior design, and communications to develop and disseminate new concepts, prototypes, products, and methodologies for energy-efficient construction and integrated building design at the macro (building design and systems) and micro (components and materials) scales. The prototype it is meant to be the test facility for pre-testing construction methods, technologies, and the human workflow before deploying these technology and methods later in the Solar Decathlon house.After the competition it will continue as a test facility for numerous technologies, data acquisition, and as an exhibit space for sustainability on campus.


The Big Read

For Junior workshop we focused our energy on the Big Read. This was interesting because we were able to focus our energy on practical applications. Working on a strict deadline forced us to be creative quick. The concept was to get the people of Knoxville excited about reading. We chose a demographic of women 25-35. This enabled us to focus our energy more specifically so that we could better understand the concepts we were communicating.

My first step into iteration was the concept of taking a reed as a pun on the Big Read, while also referencing the marsh lands of Florida. This concept although cleaver, did not seem to communicate to the audience targeted. However beautiful the imagery of the reed was, unless someone has read the book the reed would not make sense.

By Hand As a group we decided that we wanted to use beautiful script hand writing. Unfortunately there are very few decent hand written fonts. When you can’t find a good hand font you are forced to create one. Out of the group Faith had the best hand writing so we went with her type. After some very serious Photoshop we came up with a final product.

Once we had developed our content, we had to consider the settings in which these pieces would be placed. Our focus was on places where women in our demographic reside. Grocery stores, health clinics and book stores were our focus. A Facebook survey lead us to these locations, so we ran with the idea.

Stereo Types & Self Portraits

I chose to go very personal for this project, and being a person of a meager background I found it necessary to address that aspect. My first piece was a statement about “white trash” and what it means to be considered white trash. I took stories from my childhood and placed them in the context of my piece. This allowed me to explore type as image. My second piece was an exploration of hiding my feelings. Everyone knows me as a very happy and bubbly person, which isn’t always the case. I do feel sad but I do not openly show my emotions.


Going to the grocery store was particularly embarrassing. Food Stamps looked like Monopoly money. “ I would like to buy boardwalk please.” The cashier would have to get the manager’ s keys in order to type in the special “ White Trash” code, while frowning in distain. My mother would hang her head in embarrassment as she handed over the colorful money that marked us as worthless. Then we would dash out of the store like thieves in the night, ashamed of what had just occurred. The “Free Lunch Line,” need I say more. Yes, my school segregated the students that received free lunches by placing them in a separate line for lunch. This line was always much shorter, of course. To make the situation painfully evident, the “f ree lunch kids” where issued bright yellow cards to punch at the end of the line. I hated lunch. New school shopping was always the best. Ten dollars could make or break your fashion statement, and at twenty-five cents a shirt I could go wild. A shopping spree at Good Will may not seem like much, but I defined myself through other people’ s fashions. That’ s where I learned to love the sport coat. A white T-shirt and a blazer was all that I needed. I was grateful for what I was able to buy. When we received our monthly supplies, back when they still gave government cheese, the other children didn’ t have a choice as to what they could wear. They were given cloths from the churches, and local clothing drives. I felt lucky to be able to choose. Choice has been an inspiration in my life. Choice has given me the power to drive myself to success. This idea of choice has a lot to do with the situations in which we find ourselves. I have observed every decision I don’ t want to make. This is where strong roll models come into play. Just because a roll model is strong, does not always mean that the person is positive. Seeing through “White Trash” eyes has leaded me to the path of knowledge. I know it’ s cheesy, but “ knowledge is power.” That statement has never been truer. Knowledge has this beautiful ability to provide choice. Choice is the major factor that molds the people we become. I have chosen to defy my label, and mold myself into the person I want to be, and will continue to become.





I decided to go back and readdress my self portraits and convey deeper meaning through image. I overlaid images of me as a child, which made the comment about hiding or masking feelings. This approach also gave the feeling of innocents and fear. I felt that this piece communicated more successfully then the prior pieces, because of the intimate nature of the photograph.
