Progression is an inevitability in a rapidly changing world. As we progress on personal levels, our work reflects this progression. This is a compilation of three months of work. A period of growth and depth, this is a look into my progression.

CHOICE

PAPER OR PLASTIC?

This was a project based on choice. What we appear to choose, as apposed to what we actually choose. This was a conundrum in the fact that although we seem to have the world at our feet some how we wind up confused and disoriented. Is this a problem of choice? Or do we find a way to have it all?

This broadcast really hit home for me. Not only did it capture the essence of what life feels like for the average student of our generation; this broadcast embodies the human condition "emotion." As much as we all try and fight our emotions, they are essential to the functioning of our world. Choice is not made by logic alone, but by a sensitive connection between human experience/ emotion and our logical left brain. Without sensitivity to these miniscule details we loose ourselves in a sea of overflowing information, that is being processed countless times throughout the day. The only way to overcome this overwhelming wave of choices is to fine tune yourself to say enough is enough. Decide!

The most intriguing aspect of this particular subject is the primal biological response that influences the most mundane of choices, and can often become critical in retrospect. The most fascinating details of the human race are wrapped up in our own individual experiences. Those experiences sway our judgement on a daily basis and make us unique individuals. The reason why people are so entranced by narrative/ "The Meta How," is because we love the unique perspective of someone else. This is all biological in a sense. I do not believe in nature vs nurture, nor do I believe that people are predisposition to be a certain way. These two ultimate debates are non-debatable because they need each other to coexist. This is why the coffee experiment was so intriguing. The experiment explored people on a biological and personal level at the same time. How brilliant!

This discussion of choice has lead me to reflect on how I make conscious and unconscious choices through out my personal and professional career. I realize that I may be over thinking some of my decisions when I know in my gut what to do. So in retrospect I think I will go with my primal instinct as most of mankind does, and quit being so over analytical. Also, this has made a good point of how important it is to research your audience, know full and well the connotations of items, and how they are placed into context. As a Graphic Designer choice is essential. Choice is all we have.

My life saver! The preference menu is an intricate part of loving your software. This shortcut to preferences was the best idea Adobe has ever had! I saved so much time by utilizing this shortcut key that over the semester I saved time by setting my preferences back and forth in order to accomplish my goals. From file handling to cursors, this is a do it all way to effectively control your work flow. I spent hours last semester just searching for items through the lists. Now it is safe to say that shortcuts are your friend, and my best friend. This was one of the most helpful advantages this semester in creating a cohesive work flow.

Does your lens have flair?

photos by Can Birand

An important part of the semester in production was learning how to properly use the software we use on a daily basis. There are so many ways in which you can correct a photograph. Lens flair was one of the most interesting. There are three ways in which you can correct lens flair on a photograph. My personal preference is always to go with a smart object option. This allows a certain amount of versatility that the other options do not offer. Needless to say I will no longer be using the warp tool to try and correct an angle.

As with lens flair, so is true with color correction. There are so many different ways to correct color in Photoshop, but there are very few ways to accomplish this effectively. A strong emphasis was placed on using the info panel to correct colors numerically. This process almost becomes second nature and I can never see myself correcting from levels again. This was a definite growth in my understanding of Photoshop. I was always a bit reluctant to work in Photoshop, seeing as how I am primarily an Illustrator user, but knowledge is power. Now I see the importance of being able to use Photoshop as a designer, and not as a snapshot tourist trying to get the red eye out.

Photoshop has the unique ability to be impressive and frustrating at the same time. Unlike other software programs that are limiting, Photoshop can open up such a wide range of options that are difficult to remember. This is why notes are so important! Thanks to my short hand abilities I was able to conquer the wide range of options simply by referring to my notes. Although memorization is an important process in mastering a program, organization takes precedence. Although time and practice are the only ways to becoming a true master.

Blending Modes

Blending modes can be complicated., but there is a system. I found that the most similar are grouped together, normally from darkest to lightest. I am a firm believer in trying most of them to find the best fit. Some surprising outcomes have occurred from blending modes that I would not have pursued had I not taken advantage of the options. This is the one area of Photoshop that does not overwhelm you with too many options. I find that each has a unique property which can either be dramatic or subtle. Some very interesting occurrences in my photography have come from layering the blending modes. Although they may appear sometimes to make little difference, in the long run its the little things that count.

This particular assignment was brought on by two articles that we had to reed. Then we cataloged our facebook friends and created a map out of that information. As simple as the assignment appeared to be, the complexity compiled quickly.

- I felt that the comments that I received at comp stage where the main reason for my redirection. In the beginning I was having issues with type and how to best illustrate my concept threw font. Upon reviewing at comp I realized that I needed a new direction, so I took the basic concept from my first map and moved forward into a complete redesign. - At first I hated the idea of adding photos to my awesomely graphic work. I finally came around to embracing the idea about two o'clock in the morning! I feel that overall the photos were successful because I tried to put my concept behind the way the photos were viewed. - Working within the project boundaries was limiting at first and then I came to the realization that was one less item on the list that I had to consider. Also, I feel that boundaries were more realistic. Lets face it, there are few design firms that are not going to provide you with some kind of structure. Clients typically don't give free rein. - I feel that the overall aesthetic was the most successful in my map. I really enjoy my layout, and feel that it has an element of playfulness. I do however need to redirect my attention to the type. Although I find the font choice to be well suiting, the legibility of the font is of great concern. I think in retrospect I would have chosen a brighter color to contrast the type from the image/background.

I feel very conflicted by these articles. Both articles make legitimate points, but the underlying factor is how we all feel on an individual level. It is unfair to say that Facebook is better than Google. Different, not better. I have trouble even associating the two networks. When I think Google I automatically think research. Where as Facebook is more of a personal outlet. Upon further examination into this conundrum I started looking through my own Facebook. The intricate details were most surprising, because as a technologically drowned society we all seem to have the innate ability to filter out such information. What I discovered was how personally in tune to the audience Facebook appears. I had just purchased some online bar products for work via Facebook's add suggestions. Then I read the articles. I could never fathom the idea that an online search engine would be able to tailor adds specifically for me. I started to look at my adds more, only to discover that my entire life's loves were being peddled to me on the sides of my Facebook. Everything from my bar tending, to graphic design was being specifically advertised just for me. At the rate that technology in society is progressing, there is no wonder why a majority of the populous tends to be apprehensive. I, myself have been very sketchy with the whole idea of our lives become completely digital. On the other hand, the whole point of continuing our advancements in such industries is to perpetuate the electronic cycle that we all have come to know and love. People in general are fascinated by each other. We can not help but turn our heads to look at an accident as we drive by, nor can we seem to resist the latest gossip. As Tony would say " story telling is the META-HOW." The best way to get your concept across is to have the idea touch the viewer on a personal note while still maintaining a broad perspective. Facebook has achieved this to a certain degree, but there will always be the successors. Watch out Facebook, here comes twitter!

This was a collaborative assignment in which we all were paired together to create an oxymoron to letterpress and make post cards. This was by far my favorite collaborative assignment because I enjoy letterpress so much. On the flip side this was also challenging in the fact that the letterpress is so limiting. This is one of the great and awful truths to letterpress. Finding a font was also an issue. In letterpress there are only so many letters to work with, and since we were all participating in the activity, type and workspace was limited as well. I feel that letterpress really opens you up to a world of possibilities by having those restraints. One of the joys of design is solving problems, and letterpress is nothing but design issues. Sesxy

When we first started our letterpress assignment we were looking for creative letter forms. As it turns out we found some, just not quite what we had in mind. The “FL” at a glance looks like an “A,” so we tried it. Unfortunately once we had the type set, we realized that it was an “FL.” Again, the letterpress can be tricky, but new discoveries are made every day.

Kerning

I have never looked at font as much as I did after the kerning project. I knew what bad kerning was but I must have filtered out how much of it was present in our every day lives. As I walked the streets of my town I began to realize that there were very few places that actually had properly kerned fonts. Everywhere I looked It seemed that the “R’s” were touching, or the “K’s” were not properly spaced. I began to pay attention to the rhythm that type makes. What makes a type face feel a certain way is the spacing in between the type and not the type itself. This made me reflect on a point during last semester when we were discussing the importance of negative space. Now I truly know what negative space can do.

Bit map font is one of the best experiences of my life! I could probably design bit map fonts for years and never get board. I did run into some challenges over this. Bit map font can be tricky if not carefully measured. I discovered that what may work for certain letters will not necessarily work for the entire system. This is why I found it helpful to design the hardest letters first. After discovering this trick, coming up with several fonts was easy. None the less a good challenge is always entertaining. I started designing the font on this page and realized that the complexities were overwhelming. I also never realized how versatile bit map font can be. The applications are endless. I also felt like designing bit map fonts has lead me to a greater appreciation for typographers in general. Although I could argue that designers are typographers, but that is a whole different battle.

This particular font was used as an application for bit map. I made a service announcement for Feeding America by using bread to spell out the message. I felt that the concept worked well with the application, and the intention behind the message. Upon further examination I went back to the type face and made a few minor adjustments. Overall I felt that this particular project was very successful.

International Collaboration

Drawings by CiCi Tu

Drawings by CiCi Tu

This was a whirl wind in the semester. A group of visiting graphic design students from China came to visit and collaborate. There were some difficulties however. Communication was a major barrier but we seemed to move pas that, although we were not completely successful. We did get to know them all very well. The cultural exposure was the most interesting portion of this project. We were assigned to make a video on the importance of communication and information sharing, which was ironic in the sense that we were doing just that. By spending time with them we better understood how to communicate on a broad sense. Although our video did not accomplish this goal, it was a definite learning experience which I have tried to further build upon.

Brian Storming

We had several ideas from the start. Body language was our first idea since that seemed the most universal. The idea of shadows moving on a wall, ambiguous and symbolic was a great idea. Unfortunately that idea never came to fruition. We also had the idea of using food to symbolize sharing, which was KuKu’s idea, but another group was already using food to communicate their idea. We wanted to be totally original, and in that sense we accomplished our goals. We eventually settled on the idea of light as a symbol for information. We used a tennis ball as a spot to track light, but with the time constraint and lack of knowledge we ended up with “Light Rock.”

Although visually beautiful, there was one major portion of our film that went horribly wrong. LIGHT ROCK! It could have tide the concept together perfectly, but unfortunately was communicating the wrong message. We did have major issues when shooting this video, and as far as learning experiences go for the year; this one was the biggest. We were trying to stay broad so that our message would be trans cultural, and lost the meaning of our project. Out of any group, we defiantly learned the value of information sharing.

To de stress KuKu and I played with my neon ink. It is a great way to get frustrations out, and she had never just played with a medium. She said that in her country people see things for what they are, and here people see things for what they could be.

Responding to a Box When moving through the reading I found many points of interest to expand upon. The fact that boxes and packaging, as we now know them today, were not in play until the twentieth century is shocking. I felt as though the chapter needed something else. As I moved through the text every aspect of the box was addressed in some form or fashion. Everything from art, to the history of corrugated paper was discussed. Math has always been a point of interest for me, and I was surprised at the fact that the chapter did not discuss the mathematical principles involved in boxes. After all, boxes depend on math. Plus there are so many unique and interesting properties pertaining to boxes. Squares have always been a fascination of mine, so I found this the perfect opportunity to put some of my painstaking math skills to use. I decided that a cube would be the perfect form of the box, and plus there are so many properties of cubes that are graphically interesting. Plus necessity is the mother of invention, and without precise mathematical measurements there would be no box. The Hannah Higgans project a lot of fun for me. I was able to intertwine design with math and that is always a good time. I have always been particularly fascinated with the idea of numbers working in systems, so this is my ode to squares.

RESUMES I was really struggling at a certain point with my resume, and then I finally stepped back from it and realized that I had a dot and line to deal with. I took out my process book from 251 and found a dot line that I liked, and applied my resume information to the composition.

My machine For my machine project for Can I reflected on my joys of bit map typography. Seeing as how bit map is the simplest form of design, and it is mechanical in nature, I felt it necessary to continue on with my experimentation into the world of bit map. I wanted to make a machine that could be constructed in video format as well, so this was the perfect project to apply.

The Coin My entire life I have had issues making decisions. I, in recent years, have developed a way around making those decisions. Instead of using reason and logic, I flip a coin. My machine only seemed fitting that the graphics generated are as random and concise as possible. The coin fit perfect in this sense. Completely random but with limitations, the bit map design was born.

Process When considering creating a machine one must consider all elements of the aesthetic nature. Several concepts came to mind when formatting the machine. Ultimately I decided to move in a direction that was most interesting to my visual pallet. Bit map has always been a pleasing choice, and I quite enjoy the technical aspects of bit map design. Plus, when one is considering a rudimentary machine that deals with graphics, the first and most simple of all elements are ones and zeros. This gave me a platform to work from, and build on. My next step was to design a method or list of rules that would create a different out come through generating. I decided on the flip of a coin, quite literally. This is how my process came to fruition.

Explanation The intention of this machine is to generate bit map graphics in a random order so that that an indecisive designer can create designs without having to think. The benefit behind this machine is not to create a way to cheat a designer out of work, but rather to inspire a designer to create. There are many ways in which a designer can become creatively blocked and this graphics generator allows a creative outlet for the designer to release from the turmoil of making decisions.

My sixteen page signature was a building experience. Not only did it encompass everything we learned in typography for the year, it covered the essence of design. My iterations are so numerous that they could not possibly be contained in this process book alone, but I still felt the need to address the issue none the less. After six versions of my book on the Art and Architecture Building I have learned everything from body copy to colophons. I did have some registration issues but was able to resolve that by printing. If I take nothing else from this project, I will take the value of printing. Without printing a copy there is no way to assure that the layouts are how they should be. I discovered a lot about printing in general. Especially how to print effectively.
