Longevity means something when it comes to the business community. Doors opened more than 150 years ago when Topeka was putting down its roots still remain open today, forming the bedrock on which hundreds of subsequent entrepreneurs have built. From hammers to dry cleaning, fresh produce to automobiles or any number of other products and services, these businesses — the stalwarts and the newer ventures — have contributed to the capital city’s economy and growth.

The Jayhawk Hotel and Theatre opened in downtown Topeka in 1926, with vaudeville acts as the main draw. The hotel — with its luxurious feature of air conditioning — cost between $750,000 and $1 million to build. The theater closed in 1976. The hotel portion eventually became an office building and was renamed Jayhawk Tower in 1982.

The 500 block of Kansas Avenue has always been considered prime Topeka real estate. The southwest corner of S.W. 5th St. and S. Kansas Ave. is the original site of the Topeka Bank, founded by Cyrus K. Holliday, one of the city’s founders. The New England Building was constructed at the corner in 1910. Today, Topeka Tower, on the east and home to the Top of the Tower restaurant and other tenants, and the administrative office for the Kansas Department for Children and Families, on the west, flank the block’s south end at S.W. 6th Ave. — “Topeka at 150: Celebrating the Sesquicentennial of the Capital City of Kansas”

In 1950, Mildred and Earl Reser decided to try their hand at making potato salad in quantity in the kitchen of their Oregon farmhouse and selling it under the brand “Mrs. Reser’s Salads.” Their effort laid the groundwork for Reser’s Fine Foods Inc., one of the nation’s premier manufacturers of refrigerated food brands for restaurants and supermarkets. Reser’s employs more than 3,000 at nearly 20 facilities in the United States and Mexico, including a distribution center in Topeka.

North Topeka’s first mill was opened in 1870. By 1925, four mills were in the capital city: Page Milling Co., Inter-Ocean Mills and Kaw Milling Co., all of which processed flour, and Forbes Milling, which milled corn. Also in operation in North Topeka was Life O’ Wheat Co., which in 1924 received 1.5 million bushels of wheat.

In its early day, Topeka was home to four major railways that opened the Midwest to travelers and commerce: Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway Co., which would eventually become the Rock Island system; Missouri Pacific; Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway; and Union Pacific. In 1995, Santa Fe merged with Burlington Northern, becoming Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Corp. The company has since changed its name to BNSF Railway Co.

The first bricks used in Topeka were made by Leonard W. Horne in the spring of 1856 near the Kansas River. The bricks were used to build three houses: one on the east side of S.W. Topeka Blvd. between S.W. 3rd and S.W. 4th streets; another on the southwest corner of S. Kansas Avenue and S.W. 2nd St.; and a larger dwelling on S.W. 6th Ave. west of S. Kansas Ave.

25 YEARS WHERE GREAT EVENTS CREATE LIFETIME EXPERIENCES
785-582-4771 The first electric company in Topeka was formed in 1881 under the name of inventor Charles Francis Brush, of Cleveland, who perfected the arc lamp and the power source to run it. On Nov. 25, 1881, the Brush Electric Co. had a public demonstration at the Daily Commonwealth newspaper office. Copper cables were strung between the newspaper office and the plant next door. Sixteen arc lamps were placed around the pressroom. When the engineer threw the switch, the lights came on. The arc lamps used for the demonstration were distributed at different downtown street locations and drew much attention. In March 1882, the Brush Electric Co. contracted with the city to erect seven wooden towers to display the arc lamps. The first tower was built at S.W. 10th Ave. and S.W. Jackson St., and its lights were turned on July 27, 1882. The illumination was said to resemble the light of the moon.

Established in Topeka in 1902, the Topeka-based Smith Automobile Co. produced quality cars that motorists drove all over the country, including to the top of Pike’s Peak in Colorado in October 1908. Smith cars were costly at nearly $2,800, about $67,000 in today’s dollars. Every part that went into making the vehicles was made at the factory near S.E. 10th Ave. and S.E. Jefferson St. The company likely sold 1,000 to 1,200 cars before it closed in 1911, and only a few exist today. The Kansas Historical Society has a 1908 Great Smith car given to the museum in 1947 by Clement Smith, a co-founder of the company, shortly before he died.
