HONOR 2017 ROLL
Imagine the planning and dedication it takes to start a business. Think about the risk that’s involved, and the work and hard decisions that must be made to ensure success year after year. Consider the businesses that opened their doors in Topeka more than 150 years ago and remain the foundation on which the capital city’s economy is built today. And while you’re at it, tip your hat to the relative newcomers to the business scene, who have decided to follow their dreams while adding to the growth of the city.
Congratulations to Topeka’s Honor Roll. We believe in the
Strength of a good education.

UPS AND DOWNS During the late 1880s, Topeka passed through a boom period that ended in disaster. There was vast speculation on town lots. In 1889, the bubble burst, and many investors were ruined. However, during that period, the population of Topeka had doubled, and the city weathered the depression. Source: topekachamber.org

FOUNDING FATHERS Nine men met on Dec. 5, 1854, on the banks of the Kansas River at what is now S. Kansas Avenue and Crane Street. The men drew up an agreement that would become the foundation for the Topeka Association, an organization responsible for the establishment and early growth of Topeka. The nine men were Cyrus K. Holliday, F.W. Giles, Daniel H. Horne, George Davis, Enoch Chase, J.B. Chase, M.C. Dickey, Charles Robinson and L.G. Cleveland. The city of Topeka was incorporated Feb. 14, 1857, with Cyrus K. Holliday as mayor.

PAVING THE WAY
RAILROAD’S ROOTS
The headquarters of Koss Construction, a paving company founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1914, was in Des Moines, Iowa, until 1998. That year, the corporate office relocated to Topeka to be closer to construction projects and its maintenance shop in Pauline.
General offices and machine shops of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad system were established in Topeka in 1878. The railroad was founded by Cyrus K. Holliday, one of the nine men who met on Dec. 5, 1854, to establish the Topeka Association to promote the growth of Topeka. In 1995, Santa Fe merged with Burlington Northern, becoming the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation. The company has since changed its name to BNSF Railway Co.

Topeka Foundry & Iron Works Co., founded in 1876 by John Masching, is one of the sixth-oldest businesses in Topeka. In the early 1900s, Glenn Bybee, a former Capital Iron Works employee with knowledge of steel and fabrication, partnered with Masching to form the company, which employed 15 workers. On Jan. 1, 2017, the company merged with HME of Topeka and its 300-plus employees. Topeka Foundry & Iron Works Co. currently employs about 65 people. Source: topekafoundry.com

PILLAR OF EDUCATION
Washburn University, originally called Lincoln College, was established in 1865 by a charter issued by the state of Kansas and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas. The university was renamed in recognition of a $25,000 donation made by businessman Ichabod Washburn in 1868 that helped the then-struggling school survive. Today, Washburn is a public university with more than 7,500 students and more than 1,000 faculty and staff, in addition to more than 200 academic programs. Source: topekachamber.org; washburn.edu

VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Ellen S. Bowman Vail was instrumental in establishing Topeka’s first hospital and training school for nurses. She had lost her vision in 1878 from a prolonged illness, and during her recovery dreamed of a modern hospital that would serve area residents unable to pay for medical care. In 1882, Vail’s husband met with community leaders to discuss construction of a hospital. The result was Christ’s Hospital, which opened May 14, 1884, in the College Hill subdivision north of Washburn University.

FAMILY BUSINESS
Capital City Bank was established in 1892 at Richland as Neese Brothers Bank. In the early 1900s, the name was changed to Richland State Bank. Georgia Neese Gray began helping her father, Albert Neese, run the family business in 1930, and five years later became an assistant cashier. After her father’s death in 1937, she became president of the bank. In 1949, President Harry Truman named Gray the first female treasurer of the United States. In 1964, Richland State Bank changed its name to Capital City State Bank and Trust Company. Source: capcitybank.com

NEARING THE 60-YEAR MARK
Glen Spees and Frank Smith established Capital City Oil as a distributor for Cities Service in 1960. Twenty-five years later, Marvin Spees purchased the business from his father and Smith. At that time, the company had five employees at one location in Topeka. Today, Capital City Oil employs a team of experienced people; has branches in Manhattan, Wamego, Topeka, Lawrence and Kansas City, Kan.; and operates a fleet of delivery trucks with the ability to deliver up to 8,000 gallons of fuel. OVERFLOWING BANKS
Recalling a large flood in 1844, Indians warned early settlers not to build the city of Topeka on the banks of the Kansas River. In spring 1903, the Kansas River jumped it banks and flooded North Topeka, home to a number of large flour mills and lumberyards. Hundreds of citizens were stranded in their homes; 29 people drowned and property damage amounted to $4.28 million. Heavy rains in 1908, 1923 and 1935 created uneasiness among North Topeka residents, but dikes constructed a few years after the 1903 flood held back the water. However, in 1951, the Kansas River overflowed and flooded the area. As a result, the Morrell Meat Packing Plant closed, eliminating more than a thousand jobs. Source: topekachamber.org
