Ice Storm Warning issued from 9am Friday until Midnight Sunday What is the hazard? •

A prolonged freezing rain event.

Location •

Freezing rain will likely impact all of north central, northeast and east central Kansas.

Timing and Duration 

 

Across east central Kansas (or roughly south and east of a line from Emporia, to Topeka, to Lawrence) light freezing rain/drizzle is forecast to begin by late Friday morning and continue off an on through Saturday. The more intense portion of the winter storm is likely to occur Saturday night through Sunday morning. Across northeast and north central Kansas, off and on light freezing rain/drizzle is expected Friday night and Saturday with the more intense portion of the winter storm likely to occur Saturday night and Sunday. Portions of north central Kansas and along the Nebraska state line may continue to see freezing rain or mixed precipitation into Monday morning.

Forecast Confidence •

The greatest uncertainty is in temperatures and how fast they may warm above freezing on Sunday. Temps will likely be VERY close to freezing and a degree or two either side will have a large influence on ice accumulations. Hazardous Travel Conditions Unlikely

High Confidence in Ice Storm This Weekend

Overview The main impacts from this ice storm are likely to be dangerous travel conditions and the potential for prolonged power outages due to down trees and power lines. An ice storm warning has been posted until midnight Sunday with parts of north central Kansas not starting until noon Saturday. The intensity of the freezing rain is expected to be light Friday and Friday night, with minor ice accumulations expected over mainly east central Kansas. The freezing rain intensity, and severity of the ice storm, is forecast to increase by Saturday afternoon with the most likely timing for significant icing to occur Saturday night and Sunday.

Today and Tonight:  East central Kansas (or roughly south and east of a line from Emporia to Topeka to Lawrence) is area most likely to see freezing rain/drizzle.  Freezing rain/drizzle is expected to be light with minor accumulations of ice.  Travel could be difficult with it hard to recognize ice on the roads.

Saturday:  Freezing rain intensity should begin to increase across east central Kansas by Saturday afternoon.  The more intense freezing rain is expected to develop over southern Kansas and spread north through the day.  Travel across east central Kansas will become more dangerous by the late afternoon.

Saturday night and Sunday:  This is when the ice storm is forecast to be at its greatest intensity.  There could be significant accumulations of ice leading to downed trees limbs and power lines.  Travel could become be very dangerous.
