Winter Weather Briefing What Has Changed?

Timing: Timing of precipitation is slower than previous briefing – looking to start after 6 PM in east central Kansas, north central – Sat. Night Expected Weather: Light freezing rain will remain in SE Kansas through today. Light freezing drizzle possible tonight east central Kansas. Widespread freezing rain spreads north across the area Sat afternoon-Sun afternoon. Temperatures on Sunday: Models are trending a few degrees colder near freezing = Ice accumulations north and west of I-35 Sunday National Weather Service – Topeka, KS


Winter Weather Briefing Key Points…Ice Storm

Timing: Late Tonight – Sunday Evening Expected Weather: Widespread freezing rain spreads north across the entire area Sat night. Best chances for accumulating Ice Saturday night – Sunday afternoon. Freezing rain changing to rain Sunday from south to north.  Ice Amounts: Most areas .50” to upwards of 1” of ice accumulation by Sunday evening  Winds: NNE Winds 5 to 12 mph through the entire event

 Will this happen? HIGH Confidence All areas will see freezing rain from this event. Much of north central, northeast, and east central Kansas will see 0.50” - up to 1” of ice accumulation. This IS going to occur.

 Air Temperatures warming: LOW Confidence How fast do air temperatures rise to above freezing on Sunday and Sunday night? This will have a huge impact on whether some areas (especially north of I-70) could see additional heavy ice accumulations National Weather Service – Topeka, KS


Winter Weather Briefing Impacts

 Potential for damage to trees/powerlines from heavy ice accumulations of .50 to 1”.  At least scattered to perhaps numerous power outages.

Extremely hazardous travel conditions especially on bridges/overpasses any untreated roadways.

 Beginning after 6 PM tonight southeast of I-35 but impacting all areas Saturday through the day Sunday.  All areas of the NWS Topeka service area  Potential exists for .50 to 1 inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain…some areas could see more depending on air temperatures Sunday-Sunday night.
