Now in its 35th year, Leadership Mainland is a regionally renowned professional development program. Each year’s class is comprised of dedicated and
emerging leaders, representing a variety of business sectors.
From February to November, day-long sessions are held on subjects, such as city and county government, the petrochemical industry, economic development and tourism, media, social services and the Port of Texas City. The sessions introduce participants to key civic leaders that may aid them in their career growth.
The class is comprised of approximately 25 individuals and is led by former graduates of Leadership Mainland. There is a time commitment of about one day per month for nine months.

The Golden Division has been a big part of the Chamber’s history since 1987. The membership consists of residents who are retired, handicapped or not gainfully employed. Members assist at Chamber events through volunteer service and have the opportunity to serve the community by the use of their years of experience and expertise. YP of the Mainland is for rising professionals ages 21 to 45 in the local business community. It is designed to engage young professionals and provide opportunities to make business connections while also learning about the Chamber and the value of involvement.
By attending YP events, atendees can develop leadership skills, learn from peers, boost their resume, discover new job options, find volunteer opportunities, become inspired and make friends.

For more than 30 years, this event has connected industrial suppliers and contractors with the major petrochemical facilities in Texas City. The focus of the trade show is to give companies, suppliers and key purchasing officers networking opportunities with decision-makers at the community’s major industrial sites. More than 90 exhibitors and hundreds of attendees interact at this trade show.
The Women in Leadership Awards was launched to recognize women who are vital to the success of our local organizations. Categories include Large Business, Small Business, Woman-Owned Business, Education Sector, Volunter/Nonprofit and Young Professional. The winner is announced at a luncheon.
This family-oriented festival features a variety of activities, entertainment, food and fun, including a barbecue cook-off, arts and crafts vendors, a children’s fishing tournament, a pumpkin patch and decorating, mutton bustin’ and more. Popular music artists provide free concerts, and the night ends with a spectacular fireworks show.
The Chamber’s Advocacy Task Force maintains a rapport with legislators and governing bodies on the local, state and national levels. Members take input from local businesses and provide feedback to elected leaders who represent our needs and interests. Activities include Legislative Priorities surveys, the biannual Galveston County Day at the Capitol and a Legislative Update Luncheon after each session ends.
“Level Up” is a series of business education workshops held throughout the year. These informative workshops offer affordable, local training options. Led by business experts in a variety of fields, these workshops will help members build up their business and their bottom line.
The Chamber hosts several luncheons throughout the year, bringing together elected officials and industry leaders to share their expertise with the business community. Featured topics include State of the Cities and County, the State of Industry, Emergency Preparedness and Women in Leadership.
The group keeps nonprofits informed and empowered to create a positive public policy environment that best supports nonprofits in advancing their missions.
This regionally renowned tournament is the Texas City-La Marque Chamber’s largest fundraiser. It features more than 500 golfers, dozens of incredible hospitality tents and excellent network-building opportunities. More than 100 volunteers make it successful each year. Proceeds enable the Chamber to continue its many programs for community betterment.
These are the members you see at ribbon cuttings and grand openings who volunteer their time to help with Chamber events. They are the smiling faces you see taking time to make this community a better place. They are servant leaders for the community and have a supportive presence. Chamber members value their event assistance and mentoring.

Texas City’s history dates back to the infancy of the Republic of Texas. During the 10 years of the Republic from 1836 to 1846, multiple land grants were made to newly independent Texans to start homesteads. Shortly after, the close proximity to Galveston, of course, opened opportunities for pirates and privateers to live in a more secluded setting along Galveston Bay. Jean Lafitte’s Lieutenant James Campbell established a homestead in Texas City near what is known today as Campbell’s Bayou. Most people know Texas City partially for its pivotal role within the energy industry. This history stretches back more than 130 years, when brothers from Minnesota bought a mass of land in Texas City with the intention of developing a port. This began a long period of strong economic growth in the energy industry, allowing Texas City to become a crown jewel in energy production along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Texas City invites locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the history and past events that shaped the city. There are multiple opportunities to do so, including the Texas City Museum located in downtown 6th Street. The Texas City Museum is full of local history on the 1947 disaster, the birth of the U.S. Air Force, the petroleum industry and a huge display of miniature trains by the Galveston County Model Railroad Club. Bay Street Park is home to a relatively unknown piece of national history, a monument dedicated to the United States 1st Aero Squadron. In 1913, President Taft deployed the squadron to Texas City in response to the aggressive measures taken by Mexican Revolutionaries along the Texas Border. This piece of military history placed Texas City as the birthplace of what has become known as the United States Air Force. Texas City offers a distinct and diverse history that has helped shape the community into what it is today.
Texas City’s attractions offer something for everyone, whether you are seeking unmatched angling opportunities on Galveston Bay, unique shopping opportunities without the congestion of malls, or relaxing along the shores of the largest man-made lagoon Lago Mar, Texas City has something for you.
The Texas City Dike is the longest man-made fishing pier in the world, stretching 5.3 miles into Galveston Bay. The dike is one of the most popular boat launch and fishing areas on the entire Texas Gulf Coast due to its location, ease of access and great amenities, including close proximity to bait camps, fish cleaning stations, picnic shelters and more. On the adjacent levee system, there are kiteboarding, windsurfing and other extreme water and air sports.
The 12-acre Lago Mar crystal clear lagoon is the largest in Texas and a unique staycation destination. Guests can lounge on white-sand beaches, swim in azure waters or dine lagoon-side. This development is home to a 12-acre lagoon, which is the largest man-made lagoon in the state of Texas. Residents and visitors can partake in activities, including lounging on Caribbean-quality sand, paddle boarding, personal watercraft rentals or even sailing.
The lagoon holds multiple events year-round that include summer concerts, spring break festivals, Oktoberfest and a Christmas light display.
This large, nearly 50-acre park at the foot of the Texas City Dike, contains multiple activities, including a pavilion, Rainbow Park, amphitheater, splash park, hike and bike trails, bike rentals, a butterfly garden, soccer fields, football fields, large lake, disc golf course and other activities.
The City of Texas City has rezoned 6th Street as a Revitalization District in order to further the goal of developing this historic street into a regional entertainment destination. In just a few years, there has been a remarkable transformation, including new streets and sidewalks, vintage-style light posts, esplanades, trees, unique signage and decorative festoon lighting.
Residents of Galveston County and the Greater Houston Area are realizing the value and potential 6th Street brings. The downtown area has attracted residents and visitors to new businesses, entertainment venues and special events.
Enjoy the beauty of art throughout Texas City with more than 50 bronze statues and sculptures adorning many of the city parks, buildings and trails, nine fountains throughout the area and several stunning murals.
Texas City has welcomed local artists from both Galveston County and the Greater Houston Area with an annual Art Festival, which takes place in April. The Art Walk welcomes vendors to display their products for locals and visitors. Downtown merchants stay open during the evening, adding amenities for Art Walk attendees to explore 6th Street.

Texas Parks and Wildlife, and Sweet Treats operate from Gulfway Plaza, too.

Revitalization efforts on the city’s historic east side continue. Renovation of 401 Laurel is complete, and the building is home to Art of Coffee, a locally owned coffee and art gallery concept with several locations across Bay Area Houston. Significant streetscape improvements are to be completed in early 2023. These Improvements will make the area more walkable, bikeable, and pedestrian friendly.

Downtown La Marque, dubbed the Renaissance District, stretches down Laurel Street from Bayou
Road to Yupon Drive and First Street to state Highway 3. Longtime businesses including Albrecht Construction, Alex’s Air, Benito’s Mexican Restaurant and Crescent Electric continue to thrive in the Renaissance District and new businesses, including Small Events and El Lugar Event Center, are building their business downtown.
La Marque
Economic Development Corporation works to attract more businesses, restaurants and beautification efforts to the area. Improving the Renaissance District is a priority for the City of La Marque, including planting trees, creating pocket parks and hosting community events.
La Marque is experiencing a housing boom with a 31 percent growth rate from 2010 to 2020. New home construction continues the subdivisions of Borondo Pines, Saltgrass Crossing, Delany Cove, Painted Meadows and Trails at Woodhaven Lakes. But, the growth isn’t only on the west side of town.
The east side of La Marque is home to established neighborhoods with big lots and tree-lined streets. There were 250 recent home starts in La Marque on the east side alone. Residential lots that have sat undeveloped for decades are transforming into beautiful new homes.
Prospective homeowners have a wide range of home styles to choose from across the city, including bay houses, subdivision living with three-car garages, bungalows and even historic, sprawling ranches.
Trails at Woodhaven Lakes is the newest development in La Marque and will feature a single-family neighborhood along with active senior cottages and a resortstyle assisted living facility. The 83-acre development aims to provide a blend of different housing types designed to allow family members of different generations to live near each other.
Residents will enjoy 20 acres of lakes and green space, with more than 1.5 miles of off-street trails, pocket parks, barbecue and picnic areas, and a splash pad. There will be approximately 246 single-family homes, 22 “cottages” geared toward active adults, and a 9-acre, 160-unit, resort-style retirement community all within the same development.
A 3.5-acre commercial reserve on the corner of Delany and Texas Avenue will be able to accommodate a future restaurant, retail, medical or other commercial uses as the rooftops continue to grow exponentially in this area.
The development will bring about 70 full-time jobs to the City of La Marque, ranging from managerial positions to nurses, caretakers, maintenance personnel, cooks, and the like. No medical procedures will be performed in this community, as it is not a nursing home. The developer hopes and complete construction in 2023. Texas City’s quality of life and advantageous position has primed the area for population growth. The recent census numbers shows that Texas City has eclipsed the 50,000-population mark, growing at a rate that is the second fastest in Galveston County. It is no secret that the Houston region continues to rapidly grow south along Interstate 45, putting Texas City directly in line for further population expansion.
The city welcomes prospective homebuyers to browse
the range of home styles in order to fit their needs. The community offers higher-end homes, complete with boat houses on private canals, quality single-family homes with unmatched amenities, multiple-acre homestead properties and historical homes.
New residents looking for quality schools, walkable neighborhoods and quality houses, Texas City has you covered. Four new residential subdivisions offer all of these and even more for prospective residents.
Cobblestone and Central Park Square are two new singlefamily neighborhoods being developed north of Mainland City Centre. Both neighborhoods are being built by reputable national builders that include Arizona-based Meritage Homes and Houston-based Colina Homes. Along Texas Highway 3, Pearlbrook and Marlow Lake are new communities being built out by College Stationbased Stylecraft Homes, and Arkansas-based Rausch Coleman Homes.
New single-family developments include the well-known Lago Mar subdivision located along Interstate 45. The community encompasses 2,033 acres and, upon completion, will add 4,000 homes to Texas City.
Lago Mar provides homeowners with a traditional sense of neighborhood, wellplanned amenities and a location that offers quality schools and proximity to employment, retail and entertainment centers.

Lago Mar is a master planned community, complete with golf cart trails, a man-made lagoon with a beach, and future opportunities for a grocer alongside a boardwalk that will be complete with unique shopping and dining options.
The Texas City and La Marque areas are experiencing a boom in both population and economic growth, and 2023 is only going to bring bigger and better things for businesses, residents, and for the region’s many visitors.
Texas City’s Sixth Street Revitalization District features new streets and sidewalks, vintage-style light posts, esplanades, trees, unique signage and awnings adding to the pre-1950s charm envisioned for the area. The city is working to draw new businesses to the district, as well as actively pursuing new restaurants to come to the area. There are several opportunities with city-owned properties as well as private properties, and the city is offering development incentives for potential businesses.
The petrochemical sector has long been the cornerstone of Texas City’s economy and will continue to be in the foreseeable future. The industrial sector of Texas City is buzzing with activity, with Marathon initiating a major upgrade and expansion of facilities of $200 million over the next few years. Pipeline companies have added new pipelines in the area as well as upgraded current pipelines. NextDecade has announced an LNG plant to be located in Texas City on Shoal Point with more than $2 billion in value. Gulf Coast Ammonia LLC is constructing a worldscale anhydrous ammonia production facility in Texas City. The facility will have a production capacity of approximately 1.3 million tons of ammonia per year, and is expected to be operational by 2023. With investment on existing refineries, expansions and new projects, local petrochemical partners continue to create value and add jobs to a thriving economy. The newest addition to Texas City includes a $1 billion investment made by Gulf Coast Ammonia and Air Products on an anhydrous ammonia facility. When operational in 2023, the facility will account for about 9 percent of the global supply of ammonia. Recently, Ineos made a $5 billion investment in Texas City with the acquisition of the former BP Chemical Facility off of FM 519. This facility produces styrene monomer, which is a raw material used in automotives, households, electronics even construction.
During the summer of 2021, Oiltanking and ReGen III Corporation signed a letter of intent to develop a re-refinery on Oiltanking’s Galveston County site along Texas Highway 146. This facility will allow for the reuse of used lubricating oils, furthering sustainable development in the petrochemical industry.
The Texas City Economic Development Corporation has begun work on a conceptual plan for a community park located at 718 6th Street. It currently serves as a food truck park, but local leadership felt the need to research new amenities to serve residents and visitors. Future plans are looking into the feasibility for a farmers market to meet the demand for fresh locally grown produce, an entertainment venue for special events, dedicated space for food trucks and an area to incorporate interactive public art.
The Emmett F. Lowry flyover area is nearly complete and once finished it will revitalize a gateway into the city of Texas City. With a total of 14.3 miles of I-45 frontage property, the city of La Marque anticipates that the expansion will have a vast positive impact for the city, putting long-established businesses on display and enticing new businesses to the city. The city and EDC teamed up with landscape architects to create a true sense of place along the miles of frontage that stretch through La Marque.
The Texas City Commission approved a Planned Unit Development for the Southlake Subdivision that will undergo construction off of FM 646. The development will encompass approximately 438 acres and will build out to nearly 1,200 single-family homes. Southlake will add to the portfolio of quality single-family residential developments that continues to be attracted to Texas City.

These facilities generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually for the local economy in payroll, property and sales taxes, and charitable contributions, as well as thousands of man-hours for local volunteer programs.
In addition to their significance to the local economy, these facilities workday and night to produce chemicals that serve as building blocks to everyday products. From gasoline to diesel fuel, home heating oil to jet fuel, the chemicals refined in these facilities are used in the creation of plastics, clothing, medicine, computers and more.

These everyday products likely were produced using a performance-enhancing ingredient manufactured at Ashland’s Texas City plant. Ashland’s commitment to quality is only surpassed by its drive to operate a facility that is in full compliance with all environmental and safety regulations.
The Texas City plant began production in 1968 as GAF, then ISP Corporation assumed the plant in 1989. ISP was purchased in August 2011 by Ashland and celebrated 50 years of operations in 2018.
Headquartered in Houston, Texas, BWC Terminals is a premier provider of bulk liquid storage and logistics services to refiners, manufacturers and distributors of bulk liquids in North America. The company consists of 18 sites with about 13 million barrels of storage capacity. Gulf Coast Ammonia, an agricultural and commodity chemical manufacturing company, and Air Products, a world-leading industrial gases company, are constructing a world-class industrial facility in the Texas City industrial complex which will include the production of anhydrous ammonia, hydrogen and nitrogen using industry-leading technology, materials and enhanced safety features.
Gulf Coast Ammonia will produce the anhydrous ammonia to meet domestic and global demands for fertilizer and specialty chemicals. The anhydrous ammonia will be transported from the Advario Texas City marine facility in the Texas City industrial complex by refrigerated marine gas carriers and barges to be used primarily in the production of nitrogen-based fertilizers to improve crop production and yields to feed the world’s growing population.
Air Products will build, own and operate hydrogen and nitrogen gas feedstock and utility facilities to serve the ammonia production facility. It also will operate
the ammonia plant for Gulf Coast Ammonia. Separately, Air Products will extend its established Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline system – the world’s largest – to provide hydrogen to the facilities and other Texas City-area industries.
Advario North America will operate the marine storage terminal. The integrated project is a $1.1 billion combined investment, generating an estimated 1,000 construction jobs at the peak of the two-year construction period that began in 2022, and an estimated 45 new permanent operations jobs for the greater Galveston County area. Startup is expected in second quarter of 2023.

The INEOS Styrolution Texas City site sits inside the fence line of the INEOS Aromatics Chemical facility in the expansive Texas City industrial complex. Texas City produces roughly 1 billion pounds of styrene monomer annually that is used as a raw material for a number of styrenics products in industries such as automotive, electronics, household goods and construction products.
After its construction and startup in 1968, the site underwent numerous expansions and upgrades, with the most recent being a significant technology upgrade in 2013. This positions Texas City to be a strong player in the global styrene monomer industry. With about 76 employees on site, INEOS Styrolution Texas City delivers strong performance in production, quality and safety, health and environmental compliance.
Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) is a leading, integrated, downstream energy company headquartered in Findlay, Ohio. The company operates the nation’s largest refining system. MPC’s marketing system includes branded locations across the United States, including Marathon brand retail outlets. MPC also owns the general partner and majority limited partner interest in MPLX LP, a midstream company that owns and operates gathering, processing, and fractionation assets, as well as crude oil and light product transportation and logistics infrastructure.
MPC’s Galveston Bay refinery (GBR) is in Texas City, Texas, on Galveston Bay, off the entrance to the Houston Ship Channel. In 2018, Galveston Bay merged with MPC’s former Texas City refinery into a single world class refining complex with a crude oil refining capacity of 593,000 barrels per calendar day (bpcd).
The refinery can process a wide variety of crude oils into gasoline, distillates, aromatics, heavy fuel oil, dry gas, fuel-grade coke, refinery-grade propylene, chemical-grade propylene and sulfur. Products are distributed via pipeline, barge, transport truck, rail and ocean tanker. The refinery has access to the export market and multiple options to sell refined products.
Approximately 1,550 Marathon employees and between 1,500 to 4,500 contractors, depending on project and maintenance activities, work daily at the site, making the refinery the largest private sector employee in Galveston County.
The refinery began operation in 1934 as a Pan American Oil refinery and was later purchased by AMOCO. In 1998, refinery ownership changed as AMOCO merged with BP. Since purchasing the facility in 2013, MPC has made significant upgrades, improving the refinery’s process safety and environmental performance. The first gallon of gasoline was produced at the site in the 1930s. During World War II, the U.S. government provided funds that resulted in the construction of three new units to provide fuel for allied forces. The site continued to grow after the war and, by the 1960s, had a capacity of 240,000 barrels of crude per day. During the next decade, a wastewater facility was built as part of a modernization project. Further expansions and investments continued from the 1980s to 2000s aimed at improving capability, reducing emissions and producing cleaner fuels.
GBR’s demonstrated commitment in community awareness, emergency response, pollution prevention and security earned the site the Texas Chemical Council Excellence in Caring for Texas Award from 2009 to 2014 and the Behavior-Based Safety Program certification from the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies in 2014. The Houston Business Roundtable Safety Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance in Promoting and Improving Contractor Safety has been awarded to GBR since 2010. The American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers recognized the site with the Safety Meritorious Award in 2013 and the Elite Silver Award in 2015. The Elite Silver Award is a very special honor, recognizing the top five percent in the industry that have attained top industry safety performance for the application year and demonstrated excellent program innovations and leadership over time. In 2021, GBR received the Solenis Sustainability Award as the global winner for reducing water consumption.

Oxbow Energy Solutions operates a dry bulk marine terminal in Texas City that handles petroleum coke from several major refineries. The marine terminal has handled products such as petroleum coke and fertilizer. Oxbow’s experience in bulk materials handling on land, water and within production facilities has earned it a well-deserved reputation for safety, efficiency and environmental stewardship. In addition, Oxbow is a world leader in the making and logistics of petroleum coke. Since 1984, Oxbow has continually invested in its operations based in Texas City and looks forward to many more years of successful growth.
The Port of Texas City is one of the area’s oldest existing industries and serves as the foundation for Texas City and La Marque’s ability to compete in the global marketplace. The port provides dockside support as well as rail service for the petrochemical industries that call the area home. Founded in 1893, the port serves as a shining example of private commerce and is ranked the largest privately owned port in the United States and the fifth largest in Texas. The port is recognized around the globe as one of the best port sites anywhere and serves more than 4,000 vessels, deep draft and inland barge every year via its berths.
The port also provides seamless rail connection to two Class
1 railroads by means of its switching terminal, the Texas City Terminal Railway Company. Through the port, the City of Texas City was aided in its growth primarily through the foresight of company founders who took almost 5,000 acres of property for the construction of the city as plans for the original port were laid out.
The futuristic vision continues today as the port, with its sister operations of the Texas City Terminal Railway Company, maintain the latest dock facilities, equipment and innovative infrastructure to meet the requirements and demands of the global marketplace. The Valero Texas City Refinery has the capacity to process about 260,000 barrels of crude oil and other feed stocks each day, and employs more than 460 employees. The refinery’s primary products include gasoline, ultra-low-sulfur diesel, liquefied petroleum gases and aviation fuels.
Safety, environmental responsibility and community support are among Valero’s guiding principles. The refinery has one of the best safety and environmental performance records in the nation and has been a leader in OSHA’s Volunteer Protection Program, proudly maintaining STAR status, the highest of rankings in the program, since 2003.
Valero Texas City employees continued their legacy of giving in 2022 by pledging more than $715,000 to the United Way of Galveston County Mainland, ranking as the largest contributor in the area. The Dickinson Independent School District offers families a diverse, fast-growing community with a small-town atmosphere that is within easy access of big-town amenities. The district includes 14 campuses which cover 61 square miles, including the City of Dickinson, the unincorporated communities of Bacliff and San Leon, as well as portions of the cities of League City and Texas City.
Dickinson ISD is known as “Gator Nation,” with Big Al as the mascot of all district campuses, which proudly wear the colors of blue and white. New students move into Dickinson ISD each year with enrollment increasing by approximately 3,000 students over the past 10 years. As of October 2022, enrollment is up by more than 400 students from the same time last year. Demographic reports project the district will continue to experience fast growth in the coming years.
More than $460 million has been invested in district facilities over the past 23 years through six voter-approved bond issues. The most recently approved bond referendum in November 2020 is providing the district’s third junior high campus, Dickinson Junior High, which is under construction just off FM 2004 in Texas City on the southern end of the Dickinson ISD district boundaries.
When the junior high opens in August 2023, the district will realign grade levels to accommodate full-day pre-kindergarten districtwide to qualifying students. The realignment will include grades Pre-K to 3rd in elementary school, grades 4-5 in middle school, grades 6-8 in junior high and grades 9-12 in high school.
Also included in the 2020 bond referendum are additions and renovations to the Transportation Center, the Agricultural Center and the Technology Center; parking lot replacement and drainage work at Hughes Road Elementary; security and safety improvements; and replacement of the running track at McAdams Junior High.
Dickinson ISD offers students in grades 5-8 interested in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics the opportunity to attend the district’s STEAM Academy. The STEAM Academy, which opened in phases starting in August 2016, now serves several hundred students who applied for the program from throughout the school district.
Dickinson ISD also has a robust Career and Technical Education program for students to master the skills needed for a successful transition from high school into post-secondary education and/or into industry. The district currently offers 25 different industry certifications in 10 different career areas and the list continues to grow. Safety and security of students and staff is always a top priority in Dickinson ISD. There is an increased focus on mental health and social emotional learning throughout Dickinson ISD with the opening of the Gator Wellness Center. This center provides a holistic approach dedicated to the mental and emotional wellness of students, families, and staff. As the State of Texas continues to raise the standards of education, we are proud that our students and teachers in Texas City ISD are working hard to meet and exceed those standards. Texas City ISD’s current Academic Rating from the Texas Education Agency is a B. Texas City ISD received a perfect score on the most recent TEA First Financial Rating System of Texas earning a Superior Rating.
Much of the Texas City Independent School District’s success is due to the fact that Texas City ISD recognizes the need for a cooperative effort among educators, students, parents and the community. Time and again, such a shared commitment has made a difference in the lives of Texas City students. Voters approved the passage of a $158.6 million bond referendum in November 2022.
The bond program includes two new replacement schools for La Marque High School and Calvin Vincent Early Childhood. The bond also includes renovations for fine arts and career and technical labs at Texas City High School. In addition, the bond includes district-wide initiatives: new STEM/Robotics Center, new Agriculture Bond and safety and security. Projects also include a new stadium for La Marque High School and renovations to the stadium at Texas City High School.
Throughout the years, Texas City ISD has received numerous academic commendations from the Texas Education Agency. Our schools also have been the recipient of many Distinctions from TEA. The honored Texas City ISD schools, students and staff achieve many local, state and national awards, including state award winning high school band, choir and
athletics, and numerous recognitions in UIL academic events. Our Career and Technology Education programs, including marketing and robotics have achieved success at local, state, national and/or world competitions. Texas City ISD was named a District of Distinction for four years in a row for our comprehensive art program. Texas City ISD continues to offer programming that meets the needs for our students and our community. We opened Galveston County’s first high school Industrial Trades Center (ITC) in 2017. Our ITC has 30,000 square foot of space for the following trades and certifications: Maritime (OSHA, NCCER); Construction Trades (OSHA, NCCER); Welding (OSHA, NCCER, AWS); Pipefitting (OSHA, NCCER); Instrumentation and Electrical (OSHA, NCCER); and Machinist (NCCER). Industry and community representatives worked very closely with
TCISD leaders to outline the programs in need and the partnerships required to bring this program to fruition. The Texas City-La Marque area and the Gulf Coast counties offer prime job markets for skilled workers in the manufacturing, petroleum and maritime industries. With the high number of skilled laborers approaching retirement age, and a lack of skilled workers to follow, high school graduates with certifications from the TCISD Industrial Trades Center will help fill the workforce shortage within these prosperous industries.
Texas City ISD educators are committed to the vision that together
we succeed. Realizing that not all children will come to school with the same needs and experiences, Texas City ISD staff provides the encouragement and motivation necessary for students to succeed. Special programs are available for gifted learners and second-language learners, as well as those who need extra academic assistance in order to succeed. On-line learning opportunities to recover course credits are offered through our REACH program for both Texas City and La Marque high schools. Texas City ISD has multiple programs that provide additional reading and math support to students. The district’s Gifted &
Talented program develops the intellectual and creative potential in K-12 students who indicate a need to go beyond the regular curriculum.
The academic program is essential to the success of all students. However, the importance and impact of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities must be noted. Many times it is a club, a job partnership, band, athletics, choir, dance team or cheerleading that motivates students to reach their potential. Texas City ISD acknowledges the importance of these activities in the development of the whole child and offers a myriad of opportunities.
More opportunities are provided to our students through the Texas City ISD Foundation for the Future, which promotes enrichment, innovation and excellence in education throughout the district. As Sixth Street continues to undergo redevelopment, residents of Galveston County and the Greater Houston Area are realizing the value and potential Sixth Street brings. The downtown area has attracted residents and visitors to new businesses, special events and entertainment venues, such as Terror Isle Adventures Escape Room. Over the coming months, Sixth Street will be home to several new entertainment and restaurant venues.
The 1867 Settlement Historic District, the only Reconstruction-era AfricanAmerican community in Galveston County, was established by a group of formerly enslaved African-American cowboys. While employed by the nearby Butler Ranch, land was purchased with money earned in part by driving cattle up the Chisholm Trail. The property includes a home with information and artifacts as well as steer statues and a windmill to replicate the original workings of the ranch.
This large, nearly 50-acre park at the foot of the Texas City Dike, contains multiple activities, including a pavilion, Rainbow Park (a specially designed playground to accommodate the disabled), amphitheater, splash park, hike and bike trails, bike rentals, a butterfly garden, soccer fields, football fields, large lake, disc golf course and other activities.
This challenging 18-hole championship course in Texas City sits on 200 acres along the bank of Moses Bayou. A new attraction is the Pitch-N-Putt golf course, which is designed to improve a person’s skill with pitching and putting but also serves as a great way for younger people to learn the fundamentals of the game. Bayou Golf Course is also home to many renown golf tournaments throughout the year.
Bayou Fest, held every October at Mac McGaffey Highland Bayou Park, is a free, family-friendly event that draws some 20,000-plus attendees, with a world-class barbecue cook-off, entertainment, concerts, food, a kids’ fishing tournament, mutton bustin’ and more.
The more than 40-acre Carlos Garza Sports Complex in Texas City houses a five-field softball star complex with ball fields for soccer, baseball and football. It hosts tournaments year-round and is the home of two youth football leagues. There is also a pavilion with a concession stand that can be rented out for games and tournaments.
The architecture and history of the early homes in Texas City can be appreciated at Heritage Square with the refurbished and restored Davison Home, Engineers Cottage, William Moore Home and the Wetzel house.
Lago Mar in Texas City is not just home to quality single-family homes but something much larger. This development is home to a 12-acre lagoon, which is the largest man-made lagoon in the state of Texas. Residents and visitors can partake in activities, including lounging on Caribbean-quality sand, paddle boarding, personal watercraft rentals or even sailing.
The lagoon holds multiple events year-round that include summer concerts, spring break festivals, Oktoberfest and a Christmas light display.
Texas City’s newest attraction is located just along FM 1764, formerly known as the Mall of the Mainland. This former big-box mall is being transformed into a mixed-use community attraction, offering options for all generations. New restaurants have been established that encompass barbecue, soul food, brunch, Italian cuisine and casual options. The new development boasts Texas’ largest entertainment venue known as Texas Entertainment Xperience. This attraction provides locals and visitors with family activities, such as go karts, virtual reality games, bowling and skating.
The Texas City Museum is full of local history on the 1947 disaster, the birth of the U.S. Air Force, the petroleum industry and a huge display of miniature trains by the Galveston County Model Railroad Club.
This all-weather range features 28 stations for all caliber rifles and 11 stations for handguns. It also includes two regulation skeet fields and one trap field.
From big box retailers to intimate boutiques, you can find almost anything you’d want to buy in Texas City and La Marque without leaving the city limits.
In La Marque, one of the prime commercial corners is the intersection
of Interstate 45 and FM 1764, where a 50-acre retail development is anchored by Sam’s Club and Walmart Supercenter, along with about 20 other local and national businesses and restaurants, including Jersey Mike’s. Gulfway Plaza houses several excellent businesses, including boutiques and restaurants.
Tanger Outlet Mall brought new life to Texas City commerce when it opened in 2012. With dozens of stores selling the latest fashions, accessories, shoes, home goods and more; it’s a beehive of shopping activity every day of the week.
For a more intimate Texas City shopping experience, residents and visitors in the know flock to Sixth Street, where a revitalization is underway. Brixmor Development Company revitalized the shopping center on the Southside of Palmer Hwy, anchored by Kroger’s, Harbor Freight, Conn’s Home Plus, Planet Fitness, Wingstop, Smoothie King, as well as Texas City’s own steakhouse, Gus’. In addition, Edifis Group has redeveloped the Palmer Plaza with new retail and restaurant additions such as H-E-B, Aldi, Ross Dress for Less and Chick-fil-A.
Mainland City Centre is a 750,000-square-foot, continuous commercial property that has been readapted into Galveston County’s premier family entertainment destination and city centre. Developed by Jerome Karam, this iconic piece of Texas City history has undergone a complete revitalization since joining the JMK5 Holdings portfolio in 2015.
