Hot heads and sizzling tails, it’s Shrimp Boil time again!
T
he smell of succulent shrimp, the lure of cold beer on a hot summer evening and the exciting sounds of live music will soon fill the air at the Texas City-La Marque Chamber’s annual Shrimp Boil. The Shrimp Boil will start at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20 at Nessler Park, 1700 5th Avenue N., in Texas City.
Young, old and everyone in between agree, the Shrimp Boil is a night to relax and have a good time while visiting with friends, colleagues and neighbors. The Shrimp Boil is a favorite tradition of the community that has been held for more than 40 years, and it draws a crowd of almost 1,000 people every year. The event starts at 6 p.m. and will end at 10 p.m. Live bands will perform in the Rotary Pavilion, and there are plenty of shady trees and tables waiting for you and your group. The kids will have plenty of fun, too. There will be a Kids Zone sponsored by ACU of Texas with face painting and much more. Back by popular demand, Kevin Bogard and

“Just bring an appetite and an ear for good music and be ready to have a great time.” PAGE MICHEL, chamber president team from Marathon will prepare spicy Jambalaya. It will have that true Cajun taste as James Bergeron and crew prepare the Shrimp and fixins’. Entertainment for the evening is The Line Up. Most native Galvestonians remember the first time they saw The Line Up. Newcomers will love their sound. Led by founding member Willy Gonzales, The Line Up was formed almost 30 years ago as a five-piece ensemble. “We were all from different bands, it really was an all-star lineup,” Gon-
“The shrimp boats are coming, their sails are in sight. Shrimp boats are coming, there’s dancin’ tonight.” JO STAFFORD, “SHRIMP BOATS” 1951 zales said. “In fact, that is how we got the name.” Assembled as the house band of Hennessy’s, a popular local nightspot at the time, the
band soon began to land gigs outside the club and reverted to a three-piece for performances. “We have been a three-piece ever since,”
Gonzales said. Although band members changed a few times, current bassist Stacy Cook SHRIMP BOIL » PAGE 2

has been with The Line Up since 1996, and Jeff Pennington, lead guitarist, has been with the band for more than 25 years. With each band member’s unique background and talent, The Line Up is a cross-section of cultures and genres. “There is not one type of music that anyone in this band likes enough to play all the time,” Gonzales said. “We like the stuff that is timeless, and we play it all.” Advance tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the chamber office and at Texas First Bank on Palmer Hwy. Tickets are $30 per person at the event. The ticket price includes a shrimp dinner with corn, potatoes, jambalaya,
water, soft drinks and live musical entertainment. Beer will be available for purchase. Hot dog meals will be available for kids for $5, including chips, cookie and a drink. Special thanks to the Texas City Rotary Club for preparing the hot dog meals! “We look forward to seeing everyone at the Shrimp Boil,” said Page Michel, chamber president. “Just bring an appetite and an ear for good music and be ready to have a great time.” Get tickets and plan to enjoy this “end of summer” event. In the event of rain, the Shrimp Boil will move inside the Doyle Convention Center.
