The Chamber will host the Women in Leadership Awards on Wednesday, May 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Chandelier Reception Hall this year to recognize and honor women who are vital to the success of local organizations.

Honorees will be recognized for integrity, passion, humility and empathy, and for fostering collaborations, being a servant leader, uplifting others and adding value to others.

Six award recipients will be honored from Chamber members of Large Business, Small Business, Woman-Owned Business, Education, Non-Profit/Volunteer and Young Professional categories.

The WILA Luncheon is an elegant event, including a delicious catered lunch, and you are invited. Enjoy watching video highlights from the finalists and get inspiration for leadership at your own business or organization.

Leadership Mainland held its first session in March at the Courtyard by Marriott – Galveston Island. The group spent the day doing team-building exercises and participated in personal and professional development activities led by professional facilitator Kent Hutchison. Everyone learned effective skills on how to be a successful leader in the workplace and community.

Next, the Leadership class will travel to the State Capitol in Austin to focus on state government and hear from state representatives about legislative priorities.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS INDUSTRY AFTER HOURS

The Young Professionals Network group met March 21 and heard Ami Cotharn, Chief Operating Officer, MSN and RN at Coast Health & Wellness, Jon Snow, mentor/volunteer at Higher Up Texas, and Lyndell Drummond, Mentee at Higher Up Texas, about mentorship.

The topic was “The Importance of Mentorship.”

Cotharn and Snow had the chance to speak about their experiences with mentoring people in their places of work. The Young Professionals group also had the privilege to hear from Drummond, mentee of Jon Snow. The group went around the room and asked the panelists questions about how to start a mentee/mentor relationship.

Advario hosted an amazing after-hours member to member event on Thursday, March 9 at Showboat Pavilion on Sixth street in Texas City.

A great crowd of community members attended to network and have fun. Everyone enjoyed delicious appetizers from Robinette & Company Catering and special thanks to Del Papa Distributing Company for providing cold drinks.

The Women in Business networking group met March 9 and heard from guest speaker Doreen Hughes, Realtor at Coldwell Banker/TGRE.

The theme was “Engagement Through Public Speaking” and was sponsored by Eastman. Thank you to Gus’ for proving the lunches for this sold-out event.

Hughes spoke of the importance of knowing how to speak in front of a crowd and how to speak to people one-onone. She gave great advice to the entire group of women. The group had the chance to ask

her questions about how they can better improve themselves in all areas of public speaking.

The next Women in Business luncheon will be held April 13 at the Chamber. The theme will be “Engagement Through Self-Care and Mental Health” and guests will hear from Tammy Cupit, PhD, Rn-BC and Director of Nursing Science and Innovation at UTMB Health. Culpit also will touch on the very important subject of Impostor Syndrome and how it can affect anyone.

GALVESTON COUNTY DAY AT THE CAPITOL

On March 1, teams of threeto-four people from Galveston County government offices and chamber members from Texas City-La Marque, Galveston, Santa Fe and League City visited members of the Texas legislature, including the House and Senate, in Austin.

All 130 representatives of Galveston County were recognized on the House and Senate floor. All the teams met with the Texas legislatures

about projects that need state support to implement. The projects include topics such as coastal protection and port improvements. The teams also delivered the Galveston County’s legislative agenda booklet, gift bag and an invitation to Saengerrunde Hall for a legislative reception.
