Here’s the thing about The Pine School forward Reid Mortell. He’s not really a forward. Yes, he scored 33 goals this season and 134 goals in his career. Yes, he scored 11 goals in helping the Knights come within a few minutes of the first Final Four berth in school history. Yes, he is the player every Pine School opponent prepared to play against. But, no, Mortell’s not really a forward. He’s a defender. Holy Cross, the college he has verbally committed to, and Southern Methodist University, the college that has been in hot pursuit of him, want him to play on the backline. Mortell primarily plays defense or midfield for his club team — unless they need a late goal. Even when he made Pine School’s varsity team as a seventh grader, he was an outside midfielder. That’s what made his impressive senior season so, well, impressive. Mortell scored 33 goals and added 14 assists for 80 points in 22 games and is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers 2014 All-Area Boys Soccer Player of the Year. “It’s not very different playing up top, but it’s still a big change from my club team,” Mortell said. “It’s tough to get back to playing in the back sometimes, but I think I’ve been able to balance it pretty evenly for a while. “In high school, I try to use a lot of
Player of the Year
REID MORTELL
The Pine School senior forward Statistics: Mortell tied for the Treasure Coast lead with 33 goals, added 14 assists and was second in the area with 80 points. Mortell scored 11 goals in the postseason and helped lead Pine School to the Region 3-1A championship game. A two-time first-team all-area selection, Mortell finished his career with a school record 134 goals. Coach Nathan Washer: “His speed is a big part of it. He is electric quick. He is that fast and he’s good at keeping the ball at his feet. He is very strong on the ball, and he’s mentally very strong. I’ve never come across someone who can finish like him. If he gets a chance, he puts it away. That finishing makes the difference.”
speed to play forward.” That’s another part of Mortell’s story. He has been blessed with great speed and a deft scoring touch. And everyone knows what’s coming. After six years of high school soccer — and being a first-team all-area pick the past two years — there are few secrets as to who Pine School is going to rely on. “Because he’s been starting for us for six years, everybody knows that you have to stop No. 20 (Mortell),” Pine School coach Nathan Washer said. “It’s impressive because he still
gets it done.” Mortell’s postseason success included two goals and an assist against Holy Trinity in the District 10-1A championship game and both goals — including the winner in overtime — in a 2-1 win against Lakeland Christian in the Region 3-1A quarterfinal. Washer said every successful team needs a player that can “unlock a defense, be different and special” to succeed in the offseason. Mortell provided that for the Knights. “I try to stick to my game for the most part, but if I had to pick it up, I would do whatever I had to do to help the team,” Mortell said. “I made the one overtime goal to get through to the second round. “I know the team looked up to me, and when they did, I had to try to do that little extra bit.” Mortell is the all-time leading scorer in Pine School history and has set the bar very high for any player who comes after him. But he is more excited about being part of a team that advanced to the Region 3-1A championship game than any personal accolades. “To be honest, it’s not really important,” Mortell said. “I don’t like to pay attention to it. It’s cool to have it on the résumé, but it’s never been about that for me. I’m trying to do whatever I can do to win games. “If my name goes on a wall or in the paper, that’s fine. In a little bit I can look back and say, ‘That’s pretty cool,’ but right now it hasn’t sunk in.”
The Pine School, eighth year This season: Pine School went 16-5-2, was the District 10-1A runner-up and lost to Lake Worth-Trinity Christian in the Region 3-1A championship game. The Knights lost three one-goal games to Melbourne-Holy Trinity, but upset both Lakeland Christian and Holy Trinity in the regional playoffs. Quotable: “Last year, we were really hurt by injuries, but this year we not only got a year, older — because we were a young team — but we also had a very injury-free season. It, obviously, helps to keep healthy and keep them together, and we got great senior leadership in Reid Mortell. He was not only a fantastic player, but he was a real example for the younger guys as far as his work ethic. Obviously, beating Holy Trinity was a huge mental mountain to overcome. It’s hard to think we were 25 minutes from the Final Four, but we had a very good season.”
