If there was one thing that Antonnette Boothe proved this season, it’s that she knows how to find the end zone — no matter which side of the line of scrimmage she’s playing. The Fort Pierce Westwood quarterback/linebacker accounted for 27 touchdowns, including five interceptions returned for scores, to lead the Panthers to an undefeated regular season and the District 20 championship, the first in the brief history of the program. The sophomore was instrumental when Westwood (11-1) beat St. Cloud 6-0 in a first-round play-in game in the state playoffs, becoming the first area team to win a playoff game. Boothe engineered the only score of the game when she tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Madison Taylor. For her role in Westwood’s unprecedented season, Boothe has been named the 2014 Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers Flag Football Player of the Year. “It means a lot,” Boothe said. “When our coach (Michael Harrelson) told me, I was excited. I was telling everybody. When I told my mom and dad, they told me they were proud of me.” Like many of the athletes who take up flag football, Boothe grew up playing tackle football with her brothers. She also plays volleyball and basketball at Westwood. Boothe was a starter on the basketball team, helping it to its first district championship
Player of the Year
ANTONNETTE BOOTHE
Fort Pierce Westwood sophomore quarterback/ linebacker Notable: Boothe blossomed while leading the Panthers to an undefeated regular season, the first district championship in school history and a regional tournament win. She rushed for more than 1,000 yards and threw for close to 400, accounting for 22 offensive touchdowns. She also was a defensive mainstay with 15 interceptions. Boothe returned five of those for TDs. Coach Michael Harrelson: “She’s just a natural athlete. I think she’s grown up playing sports with her brother and the neighborhood kids. We just needed to put her in the right place and that’s what we did as a linebacker who roams. We kept her at quarterback because she knows how to get into the end zone. She has a lot of heart and a big desire to win.”
since 2000 and into the Class 6A regional semifinals before being eliminated from postseason play. She said she spends more time working at basketball, but she still plays football with her brothers. And Boothe had a plan when she joined the flag football team as a freshman. “I wanted to be the quarterback at first, then I wanted to be a receiver,” Boothe said. “But they let me be the quarterback, because they thought I could be the best person in that
position. “Coach saw that I could throw real far and get the ball there. As soon as he saw me throw, he said, ‘You’ve got the potential.’ ” Despite having the arm, Boothe is more of a runner than a thrower. She passed for about 400 yards this season but rushed for more than 1,000, which made her the leading rusher in the area. Harrelson did not have her exact yardage numbers. “If the pass is real far, I don’t like to throw it,” Boothe said. “But once coach told me to forget about that, and to just focus on the positive, it helped. But I prefer to run the ball.” She takes no credit for her success, or that of the team, deferring to Harrelson, whose nickname is “Bama.” “It’s just Bama,” she said. “He’s got all the plays. If I don’t see it, I just run.” As good as she was with the ball in her hands, Boothe actually prefers to play defense. She plays linebacker and had 15 interceptions. “It’s easier,” she said. “You don’t have to worry about scoring. As soon as we were on offense, my heart would start pounding because I’d be so nervous.” Boothe said she felt the pressure as Westwood swept through the regular season without losing. “It made it harder, but it made us want to win even more because we didn’t want to lose,” she said. “Winning the (play-in game) was amazing because I didn’t think we could win, but I wanted to win. All of us had our heads in the game, and it played out so good. “It was a lot of fun.”
Fort Pierce Westwood, third year This season: Guided Westwood to a perfect 8-0 regular season, giving up only six points in those games. The Panthers then shut out both their opponents in the District 20 tournament to win the first championship in school history. That milestone achievement was followed by another, when Westwood became the first area team to win a play-in game. The Panthers fell one win short of making the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Quotable: “It’s been a real special year for me. We’ve been talking about this since the day I started the job, about goals. That first year we won the district unofficially. So then we talked about setting goals and getting a banner for the gym in flag football. We did that — we won the district.”
