VERO BEACH — Trey Peirce has come a long way since joining the first Gifford Middle School boys lacrosse team when he was in sixth grade. Seven years later, he helped lead the Vero Beach High School varsity squad to its best season in program history, earned recognition as the team’s first All-American and established himself as the area’s top player. Peirce, a senior defender, is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year. “We knew he was a cut above what we’ve experienced here before, but he really developed physically and emotionally this year and matured as a player,” Vero Beach coach Jon Moriarty said. “He got beyond a player trying to prove himself and just became a complete player. He was probably a little overly aggressive as a junior, but this year he was solid — still aggressive, but in a smarter way. “His physical ability was phenomenal, and once he realized his physical ability, he became a very confident, contained guy who caused an awful lot of problems for the other side without putting himself in the penalty box.” With Peirce guiding the defense, Vero Beach allowed only 5.4 goals per game this season, giving up doubledigit points in only three games and posting three shutouts. He led the team with 58 takeaways, while adding 34 ground balls and four goals. “This year, I really tried to work on my conditioning to make sure I was ready to play my best season,” Peirce said. “I knew it was my last season, and we all felt this year’s senior class could be the best ever at Vero Beach High School, so we wanted to make

Vero Beach senior defender Statistics: Led a defense that allowed only 5.4 goals per game, finished with 58 takeaways, 34 ground balls and 4 goals Coach Jon Moriarty: “He is just a phenomenal athlete and a phenomenal lacrosse player. He’s very smart. He’s learned how to anticipate being in the right place at the right time, and he has the skills to discourage guys from wanting to take the ball near him. He was the most dominant player in the area, and he was a big part of our success.”
this our best year yet.” Peirce did not sign to play anywhere in college, instead electing to attend his dream school and play club lacrosse at the University of Florida — which has no varsity men’s program. However, his abilities did not go unrecognized outside of Vero Beach. Peirce played in the Florida Senior Southern Region All-Star Game on May 23, and he was selected by the South Florida chapter of U.S. Lacrosse as an All-American — an announcement pending official release by the organization. He also was one of 96 seniors nationwide selected to play in the U.S. Lacrosse Champion All-American Showcase on July 24-26 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. “As a coach, it’s great to see a player achieve his potential and be recognized for it,” Moriarty said. Peirce, who comes from a family of lacrosse players, is humble about his own achievements, though, deflecting the attention to the accomplishments of the team, which finished 15-3 with losses to state semifinalist

Vero Beach, fifth year This season: Guided the Fighting Indians to their eighth consecutive district title en route to a 15-3 finish. The season, which included a marquee win against Jupiter, ended with a 12-11 overtime loss to eventual state semifinalist Benjamin. Quotable: “It was a very gratifying season. We had a group of kids who were outstanding in the classroom and on the playing field. They set the bar of hard work and success for our program. The most impressive thing was the ability of players to step in and play roles when circumstances deemed it necessary. It will be interesting to see if the next generation of players can sustain the level of play this group established.”

Benjamin, nationally-ranked Calvert Hall (Md.) and Creekside, a team many coaches expected to be among Florida’s top five this year. The highlight of the season was a 10-8 win over Jupiter, a team that beat the Indians twice last year, including a close game in the playoffs. The 2013 rematch was one in which Vero Beach was at its best in all aspects of the game, but the defense played especially well — Vero was one of only five teams to hold Jupiter to fewer than 10 goals this season. “That was one of our biggest accomplishments,” Peirce said. “The defense played outstanding. Every time the ball came on our side, we worked hard to get the ball back to the offense. “Everyone had the best game of their lives. It was pretty amazing.”
