Martin County, fourth year This season: Martin County had another outstanding season, losing only one match during the regular season, winning the Kegel High School Challenge and District 12 titles and finishing second at the FHSAA Finals. It is the fourth consecutive year that Martin County placed in the top three at state. Quotable: “I guess the biggest thing from the season is the Baker 300 (rolled in the state tournament). It had never happened before at the state tournament and no one can ever take that away from us. This team, the last three years, has had records that no one else will break. I think this team set the bar high for the rest of the teams in the state.”

Shelly Goodwin caps stellar high school career by helping Martin County roll first 300 game in state finals history By Jon Santucci

Bowler of the Year

Special to Treasure Coast Newspapers

STUART — Martin County High School’s girls bowling team was on the precipice of history at the Florida High School Athletic Association state finals, and senior Shelly Goodwin had a chance to add another highlight to her impressive career résumé. As she had the previous three years, Goodwin succeeded. She threw three consecutive strikes to complete the first ever 300 game in Baker competition in the FHSAA Finals. “I told myself that, ‘I came here to do this. This is what I’ve been practicing for. All I have to do is throw three strikes. I do it all the time.’ Before the first one I was kind of shaking and freaking out,” Goodwin said. “I threw a great shot and then it felt like I was bowling any other game. “Everybody asks me if I was nervous on the last two strikes, but after the first one the adrenaline kicked in so much. Everybody says sometimes things go in slow motion and, honestly, it felt like it was all in slow motion watching all the pins go down. It was such an amazing feeling.” Goodwin finished the season with an average of 216.84 pins per game. For her efforts, Goodwin is the All-Area Girls Bowler of the Year for the third year in a row.

SHELLY GOODWIN

Martin County senior Stats: Goodwin, who is the All-Area Bowler for the third consecutive year, had a season average of 216.84 pins per game, won the individual title at the Kegel High School Challenge and finished fifth individually at the state tournament. Goodwin helped guide Martin County to the District 12 championship and a second-place finish at the FHSAA Finals. Coach Tom Baral: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a girl like her or a team like this before, and I don’t think you’ll see one for a long time. I’ve not seen anyone like her — I really haven’t. I’ve traveled to watch Team USA and watched some key bowlers and she’s the total package. She has everything in place.”

“She’s the best high school bowler I’ve ever seen,” Martin County coach Tom Baral said. “Her sheer determination and dedication, you know people don’t see the time she puts in. People think they’re natural, but it’s work year after year.” While Goodwin has maintained her high level of play each season, she is a much different bowler than she was as a freshman. Goodwin

worked a lot on her approach, hand release and speed control. She had a much higher strike percentage this season than she had in the past. Goodwin arguably is the most consistent bowler in the area. Baral said a good high school bowler can come within three boards (each 1 inch wide) of hitting a target — Goodwin comes within a board and a half. “She reads lanes faster, adjusts better and throws hard,” Baral said. “She is the entire package. There’s not (just) one thing she does well, she does everything well. “She out-averaged every boy on the team this year. To be able to bowl on that level, to compete against male bowlers, again that’s all about her ability to focus on the target and hit that target consistently.” Goodwin said her lone frustration was during the FHSAA Finals. The Tigers were the runners-up to state champion Oviedo, and Goodwin finished fifth overall in the individual bracket. Goodwin, who will try out for Team USA in January in Las Vegas, has visited several colleges, but said she still has not made a choice. “Any team that gets her is just going to be unbelievably happy,” Baral said. “She’s not intimated, which is nice. She doesn’t care who’s bowling against her. She’s totally focused.”
