Vero Beach, second year This season: Vero Beach was the District 16-3A and Region 6-3A runner-up and finished third in the Class 3A state tournament. Vero Beach had two freshmen, Sarah Noonan and Mary Kate Hiller, and only one senior, Brittany Soucek, in its starting five. Quotable: “The addition of the two freshmen really helped with the depth of the team that was already strong — especially freshmen with extensive tournament experience and the knowledge of how to play at a high level. Once the season started, we did a better job of preparing and keeping our game sharp. We had no idea what to expect at state, but we did pretty well for ourselves. All the girls know they need to not put the clubs down if they want to go back to state.”
BETTINA ALMEIDA
Jensen Beach senior Stats: Almeida averaged 38.0 strokes per nine holes and 82.0 per 18 holes during the postseason.

The Pine School’s Shannon Aubert is the 2013 All-Area Girls Golfer of the Year.
HOBE SOUND — Pine School senior golfer Shannon Aubert describes her strategy as “pretty boring.” “I just try to go fairway, green, putt,” Aubert said matter-of-factly. Pretty boring works extremely well. Aubert was the Class 1A state champion — her second individual title in three years — and shot below par in every postseason round this year. For her outstanding season, Aubert is the All-Area Girls Golfer of the Year. “The year went pretty well,” said Aubert, who won the 2011 state title while playing for Windemere Prep. “I had some unexpected bumps in the road, but overall, it was really good. I was really glad to get the first title in school history. “It means something to win the first one, especially since the school is just starting out and it’s expanding and growing. It’s pretty cool to have that.” Pine School coach Arlen Bento Jr. said the thing that sets Aubert apart is her ball-striking. “There’s been some really good girl players come through Stuart,” Bento Jr. said. “You’ve got Alex Buelow, Megan McChrystal, Allie Bodemann, but I don’t recall any of them with her pure ball-striking skills. I haven’t seen putting skill and ballstriking skill like her’s; it’s just at another level.
Golfer of the Year
SHANNON AUBERT
Pine School senior Stats: Aubert won her second FHSAA Class 1A state championship, shooting 6-under-par 138 at the state tournament to earn her second individual title. Aubert averaged a sub-par 34.6 strokes per nine holes and averaged 67.5 strokes per 18 holes in four postseason rounds. Aubert has signed a national letter of intent to play at Stanford University. Coach Arlen Bento Jr.: “It’s been a pleasure to coach her. I have very rarely been around a player of her caliber. What stands out is the way she blended in with the program and the boys. She made everyone around her better. She is an extraordinary golfer and person and she putts as good as anyone I’ve ever seen. I’m sure she’ll have a great career at Stanford.”
“The thing with her is she’s so good with her teammates — her perspective and attitude are so good. She just wants to work hard. She has an aura about her that makes her special.” Aubert is an accomplished international junior golfer, which helped make competing at the high school level much easier. She shot a 9-under 63 at Gator Trace Golf Club in Fort Pierce in the District 19-1A tournament — a tournament in which no other golfer broke par.
ABBEY HUBER
“It’s obviously a good score, but that course is set up for her kind of game,” Bento Jr. said. “That score, honestly, didn’t shock me; I’ve watched her shoot 32 with the boys at Hobe Sound (Golf Club) all the time. The amazing thing about her score is that she didn’t even warm up. She just went out and played.” Aubert followed that up with a 3-under-par 69 in the Region 7-3A tournament to claim medalist honors. She was 6-under par in the twoday state tournament to win the state title. She actually tied Circle Christian’s Abbey Carlson at state, but Carlson was not eligible for the state title because she missed the district tournament. Aubert herself missed the 2012 postseason because of international obligations, which may be the only thing that prevented her from being a three-time individual state champion. “It’s a lot different (from international golf tournaments) and there are different things on the line, but no matter what, I just try to play my best,” said Aubert, who signed with Stanford University. “I think I probably approach state golf a lot more relaxed, where I might be a little more stressed out in other tournaments. “I’ve learned a lot from those tournaments. I’ve learned a lot from when I didn’t play well or when I had a bad experience. I learned how to avoid it for the next time. But you learn from those experiences and the more experiences you have, the better you play.”
Abbey Huber, a fivetime All-Area selection, died in a plane crash Dec. 8 while traveling to Jacksonville with her father and sister. She had won her division of the South Florida PGA’s Junior Tour Championship at Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club at Old Trail in Jupiter earlier that day. Laurel Pfahler
