Swimmer of the Year
Special to Treasure Coast Newspapers
When the swim season began, Darby Goodwin had a clear picture of how she wanted it to end. The Pine School junior envisioned herself on the podium at the state swim meet, where she would bend low so a medal could be placed around her neck. Goodwin’s dream became reality when she reached the podium not once, but twice, at the Class 1A FHSAA Finals in November. Goodwin earned the silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke after taking the bronze in the 200 individual medley. She also was part of two relay teams that reached the state meet and advanced to the consolation finals. For her achievements, Goodwin has been named the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers 2013 All-Area Girls Swimmer of the Year. “I don’t think there’s any one thing that stands out, just the whole year with my team was memorable,” she said “We all swam great times and had so much fun. State was just the best part when it all came together and I placed on the podium in both my events.” Goodwin had placed third in the 100 backstroke as a sophomore, which gave her a guidepost of the kind of performance she would need to get back. That event proved to be her strength during the postseason. She opened the three-week sprint
Sebastian River junior Stats: Jordan took 19th place in the 100 backstroke at the State 3A meet.
SARA LACUSKY
Martin County junior Stats: Lacusky finished seventh in the 100 free, sixth in 100 breaststroke, was on the fifth-place 200 free relay team and 11th-place 400 free relay team at the State 3A meet.
CAROLINE SCHIRMER
The 2013 All-Area Girls Swimming team was compiled by Aimee Ford Foster.
DARBY GOODWIN
The Pine School junior Stats: Goodwin came in second in the 200-yard individual medley, won the 100 backstroke and was on the second-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams at the District 10-1A meet. At the Region 4-1A meet, she took second in the 200 IM, second in the 200 back and was on the sixth-place 200 medley and 400 relays. She finished second in the 100 back, third in the 200 IM and was on the 10th-place 200 medley and 11th-place 400 free relays at the State 1A meet. Coach Pat Toner: “Every time she went in the water, she improved her time, every single time. That’s pretty unusual. She’s got a mindset, like ‘I have to have this time.’ And she gets there. She’s very, very dedicated, hardworking and extremely mentally sound.”
to the state meet by winning the District 10-1A championship in the backstroke. “Because I placed third last year, I knew I had a chance to make the podium,” she said. “I wanted to do that. But I also set pretty high goals for my times, which I achieved. I’m pretty happy about that.” Goodwin, who mostly trains with the St. Andrew’s Aquatics swim club in Boca Raton, received all-America consideration in both
her events. Although she still is more than a second off being an automatic allAmerican in the IM (2:04.24), she narrowly missed that status in the backstroke. She touched the wall in 55.82 seconds at the state meet. She needs 55.57 to be an automatic AllAmerican. “She’s very, very close,” Pine School coach Pat Toner said. “To get the automatic times for those things is very difficult.” Toner was impressed Goodwin shaved seconds off her times every time she got in the pool this season. “I know I can go faster than I went,” she said. “But I’m happy with the state meet.” Goodwin, like most elite swimmers, is in the pool all year. She competed at the 2013 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships last week in North Carolina. She will continue chasing faster times. “I want to swim at a Division I college and it’s all about your time in the end,” she said. “The high school season, for me, is about the experience. It’s the most fun part of swimming, being with your friends and getting to race all around the state. It’s just about the fun. Colleges see your times the whole year.”

Lincoln Park Academy senior Stats: O’Keefe came in 23rd in the 100 breaststroke at the State 2A meet.

Coach of the Year
SCOTT BARLOW
Sebastian River, eighth year This year: Sebastian River won its second consecutive regional title. Senior Micaela Martinelli (200-yard freestyle) and Amanda Brocksmith (100 breaststroke) won individual titles at the regional meet. Sebastian River took third place in a competitive district meet and advanced five individuals, plus a relay team, to the state meet. Quotable: “I was a little nervous about losing my seniors that did so well last year and wondering if the girls would be able to step up and they all did. They came together as a team. I knew they had it in them, but I wasn’t sure they could pull it off. It was a pleasant surprise.”
