SEBASTIAN — Brandi Lucas thought the final time she walked away from a high school track meet, it would be with a medal — or two — draped around her neck. Instead, the Sebastian River High School senior limped off midway through the District 13-3A tournament with a season-ending hamstring injury — an injury that left Lucas and the Sharks coaching staff wondering what could have been. “The pole vault — I feel like I could have won (at the Class 3A Florida Finals),” Lucas said. “I felt like I had more in me. I was clearing high bars already. With higher poles, I could have had even more height. “It all fell away once I got hurt.” Lucas finished fourth in Class 3A in the pole vault in 2012, but Sebastian River coach Chris Jefferson said she actually was peaking this year in a different event before the injury. “When she was healthy, the hurdles were the thing she really bought into and excelled in,” Jefferson said. “She could have gone far in the hurdles.” Lucas scored points in many ways for the Sharks this season — including the pole vault, 100 meters, 100 and 200 hurdles, triple jump and high jump. She more than proved her excellence on the Treasure Coast before she got hurt. For her efforts, Lucas is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. year in a row Lucas has claimed the honor. “It was a great season,” said Lucas, who signed with the University of South Florida in April. “Even though I got hurt, I accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish. It was very important to be able to score a lot of points this year. I focused a lot on doing my events to help the team score more than anything. “It is such an individual sport, but I really take a lot of pride in my team and the team atmosphere.” Lucas set personal bests in the
Vero Beach, first year This season: Vero Beach won the District 8-4A title this season and finished fifth in Region 2-4A, despite missing key athletes because of injuries. The Indians had five individuals advance to the Florida Finals — more than any other team on the Treasure Coast. Vero Beach won the DSS District Prep and South Fork meets, as well as the Vero Beach and Astronaut invitationals. Quotable: “I though the first year went well. We had a bunch of newer girls and some veterans — and they were really important for some of the younger girls. Kayla Woulard and (Jeyland) Valentin really took over some of the practices, and made sure the kids got in the right frame of mind with the way they practiced. We really set the foundation and the standard for the future.”
