Jensen Beach High School’s Danny Hartley is the 2013 All-Area Boys Co-Athlete of the Year.

Double gold champions Danny Hartley and Andrew Wojcik rise to the top, winning two golds each at the state meet By Aimee Ford Foster Special to Treasure Coast Newspapers

Throughout their high school careers, Danny Hartley and Andrew Wojcik have been counted among the elite swimmers on the Treasure Coast. This year, the seniors proved to be among the best in the wider pool of talent in the state — and definitely among the very best swimmers of all time from the area. Jensen Beach High School’s Hartley and Sebastian River’s Wojcik, each won two gold medals at the Class 3A FHSAA state championship meet in November. Hartley won the 50- Andrew yard freestyle and 100 Wojcik butterfly. Wojcik captured championships in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Each is the first swimmer from his school to win a state championship. They also are the first area swimmers to earn two gold medals at the state meet since 2000, when Martin County’s Chris Fowler became the third area swimmer to double dip into state gold. For their achievements, Hartley and Wojcik have been named the All-Area Boys Swimming and Diving Co-Athletes of the Year. Hartley was the 2012 all-area winner while attending Martin County. “I guess hard work does pay off in the end,” Hartley said. “I just trust my coach and keep training. Everybody wants to win state championships. It’s a dream come true.” Hartley was blazingly fast in both events, earning automatic all-American status in each. He carved nearly a second off his time in the 50 free from the regional to the state meet, which he won in 20.73 seconds. He dropped an eye-catching 3.28 seconds off his time in the 100 fly to win in 49.57 seconds. “It was the best swim meet of my life,” said Hartley, who spent two

years at Martin County attending the culinary program but said he returned to Jensen Beach to graduate with his lifelong friends. “But districts were amazing because the guys won for the first time.” Hartley had no idea he could win the 50 free, but thought he had a chance in the butterfly despite being seeded sixth. “You really can’t go by the psych sheets because everyone goes faster at state,” he said. “I did feel I had a chance in the fly. The 50 is just a crapshoot. It’s so fast. There’s no time to mess up ... at first I was shocked. I couldn’t believe the scoreboard. It was amazing.” Wojcik’s ascension is, perhaps, the more surprising. Although he medaled as a sophomore, Wojcik missed the podium last year. This year, he was seeded 18th in the 200 IM, which was his first individual swim of the day. He cut significant time in the prelims, though, and when he touched the wall of the finals in 1:53.17, it was nearly eight seconds faster than his regional time. “That was probably the high point of this high school season,” he said. “I didn’t even think I had a chance of getting on the podium. In the breast, I thought I had a chance. I was seeded (18th) in the IM and came out first.” He dropped 4.11 seconds off his breaststroke time to earn the win in 56.77. “It was a great relief to me, because I haven’t dropped times in both those races in forever,” Wojcik said. “In the breast, it’s been like three year and the IM was like a year.” Both times were fast enough to earn all-American consideration. “I wasn’t panicked (about his seeding),” coach Scott Barlow said. “It’s not uncommon to see five, six, seven second drops in the IM and three in the breaststroke. … He was waiting for a big meet.” Wojcik’s first swim in the finals was with the 200 medley relay, which placed first to give him his first medal of the day. He said that
