The Former Elabree Estate This display case represents a time capsule containing many items found hidden within the walls, floors and ceilings of the former Elabree home. It was many years ago, 1941 to be exact. The land was mosquito infested and Ocean Drive was merely a dirt road. But the Elarbee family found something special with this land off Vero’s beach. It was on this beautiful land that they built their cozy and comfortable Florida cottage. After over 60 years of persevering the harsh Atlantic Ocean, including several hurricanes, the home had seen better days. It was ready to be replaced by another dream. This display case represents a time capsule containing many items found hidden within the walls, floors, and ceilings of the Elarbee home. For example, the large weather beaten board at the center, with its original heavy duty brass hinges, was part of a lid for a water well. The red brick is a remnant of the fireplace that provided warmth during the winter cold. The newspaper clippings found inside the walls tells you interesting stories from a bygone era just before World War II. The interior walls and ceilings of the home were laden with pecky cypress. This wood was saved during demolition, planed, sanded, and beautifully stained to be reused by Helmet House Construction in their new Showcase home. It can now be found adorning the ceilings of its patios and balconies. Even though the once beautiful Elarbee estate no longer exists, a piece of its history survives still today.

Enjoy a short stroll to Jaycee Beach with a boardwalk, cafĂŠ, playground, and barbecue areas with picnic tables.

Just a a short distance away on Ocean Drive, there are upscale shops and restaurants. Vero Beach offers a year round calendar of events, festivals and other activities, as well as a lively cultural scene, including the Riverside Theatre for the performing arts and Vero Beach Museum of Art. A tropical climate, excellent community, few high rise buildings, no traffic, and gorgeous wide white sand beaches make the area unique. Large metropolitan cities such as Miami, Palm Beach, and Orlando are also an enjoyable distance away

The villa is a five bedroom, seven-and-a-half bath residence with a distinctive “South Florida” appearance. The four-car garage faces a formal motor court with pavers complementary to the old Chicago brickwork.

The secluded private entrance is six feet wide and 11 feet tall, all wood and completely handcrafted. The arched header is antique wood finished with stone molding surrounds.

ero Beach is buzzing over the Villa di Splendore, a new Mediterranean-style home on Ocean Drive. Controversial for its decidedly “South Florida” architectural style and hefty $5.8 million selling price, the 9,477-square-foot residence is directly on the beachfront next to the Village Spires. It is the first of six residences to be built on the site in a similar architectural style. A peek into this mysterious home reveals five bedrooms, seven-and-a-half baths, a private covered terrace and plenty of balconies. The imposing Tuscan-influenced exterior, with its handcrafted barreled clay roof, contains hand-chiseled Cantera stone, tumbled travertine and slate tile accents. Beautiful unquestionably, but hardly typical of your traditional Vero Beach home. Jan Jelmby, the owner of Helmet House Construction, initially had another vision of what he wanted for the five-acre property he purchased 12 years ago. The previous owner had built small estate homes that were referred to as “cottages” when they were constructed during the early 1930s. “We actually found a time capsule when we tore down the first house,” Jelmby recalls. “We found newspapers from 1931. Just think. It was a time when Ocean Drive was a dirt road and very secluded. “Originally, I tried to get the city to approve new cottages, 16 of them. The planning committee was in favor of the idea, but it was turned down by the City Council. They called it cluster housing, when in my view it was a little village.” Having his original concept rejected was frustrating, yet today Jelmby admits that the Villa di Splendore and other homes yet to be built are more exciting. It's just that it was hard to take at the time. “There I stood with that beautiful piece of property and no plan for it,” he says. “So I decided to go out of town to see what other builders were doing.” That took him to Naples where he and

his wife attended a concert held in a large estate home. From the moment they arrived they were impressed — and not just by the music. “My wife and I returned to Vero Beach enthused, saying that this is the type of architectural design we want.” With only .65 acres of narrow oceanfront land to work with and a 13-story condominium next door, Jelmby and architect Randall Stofft faced more than the usual number of challenges when they sat down to come up with a concept simi-

The custom-designed wet bars, archways and barrel-and-groin vaulted ceilings in the club room were created in Helmet House’s own millwork shop.

lar to the house Jelmby had seen in Naples. There’s no question that they were successful in their mission. But to what extent you like it depends on your feelings about the ornate style of architecture often referred to as the “Boca look.” Five Mediterranean-style homes have yet to be built on Jelmby’s oceanfront enclave. With names such as Villa di Bellezza, Villa di Magnificenza, Villa di Grandezza, Villa di Eleganza and Villa di

Tranquillita, they epitomize a design style that has become prevalent to the south of us, as massive growth transforms Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and other cities. Whether they will also become the new look of Vero Beach is something that the residents of Indian River County will have to decide with their votes – and their wallets – as South Florida continues its ` march north.
