Front Cover: Dahlia Wall Light (D32), designed by Janne Kyttänen in 2005 — courtesy of Freedom of Creation, part of 3D Systems. Like the flower, Dahlia is a fascinating arrangement of petals, cohering to a compact and gentle semi-sphere. Light penetrates the narrow gaps between the petals, creating surprising effects on walls and ceilings, especially when several Dahlia lamps are mounted in a sequence. Dahlia is a striking decorative object and part of the collection at the Vitra Design Museum. €708.71 @ freedomofcreation.com
Curator’s Notes With the winter in full flow our gaze naturally turns to the festive period and the new year awaiting us. These times of joy and celebration are epitomized by the tradition of gift-giving. This collection brings you the hottest 40 3D printed gifts this season — from the useful to the purposely useless, from the most staggeringly complex to the most beautifully simple. Increasingly 3D printing is inspiring designers to push boundaries, change direction and experiment. In fact, I believe that 3D printing is as much an excuse for designers to do something different as it is the technology that enables the end product — in no way is this a bad thing, we all need an excuse to let loose once in a while. On these pages you will find all the details you need to get hold of some inspirational designs for your friends and family this Christmas, New Year and beyond. LIGHTING & INTERIORS
1597 by Freedom of Creation
The Design 1597 is based on the Fibonacci sequence of numbers appearing in nature all around us. 1597 is inspired by the coneflower and the growing pattern of its seeds. All the holes in this shade are arranged around the bulb, so no matter where you look at it, you can’t escape the beautiful rays of light it creates. 1597 can be mounted on the wall or on the ceiling. A strong decorative shape, that works well as a single light and in multiple sequence arrangements.

Tulip.MGX by Peter Jansen
The Design The Tulip.MGX takes its shape from intriguing organic forms — forms that are so far unknown and yet seem so familiar. Rather than centering on a translation from our visible world, this light object is a translation of the strange attractors and mathematical formulas used in chaos theory.
The Designer Peter Jansen was born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1956. The son of an inventor, he developed a unique way of looking at the world. After studying mathematics, physics and philosophy and working in education, he returned to his original interest in art, and taught himself to work with metal and wood. Among a select group of artists in the Netherlands, Peter used highly specialized software as a medium to create virtual objects and then transpose them, via rapid prototyping, to solid, three-dimensional sculptures. From mathematical point clouds of dots, he created new virtual worlds in which to explore the interrelation of movement and space. The shapes that resulted from this approach are sculptures that fit well in urban public spaces, office buildings and other interior areas, as well as in the open air. â‚Ź289 @ mgxbymaterialise.com
Sadly, Peter passed away in 2011, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy of design.

610 Table Lamp by Janne Kyttänen
The Design The coneflower, with its shape described by its uncountable pistils, has inspired the creation of the graceful 610 table lamp. It is named after one of the Fibonacci numbers, a sequence of numbers reflected in nature, for example by the arrangement of petals and seeds in flowers. The ovoid shade of 610 lamp with its nubby surface creates diffused light and adds an atmospheric accent to residential environments or elegant public spaces.

Quin Christmas Decoration by Bathsheba Grossman
The Design Christmas is coming and with it comes the fun of decorating your Christmas tree at home. Yes, it's that time of the year where you take the decoration box out of the closet to dress your tree. But aren't you tired of always seeing the same kind of decoration hanging on your tree year after year? Wouldn't it be great if you could give it some ‘designer’ touch? Since then Bathsheba has been making art using many computer-mediated processes but mainly 3D printing and subsurface, laser etching in glass.

AI.MGX by Assa Ashuach
The Design The AI.MGX stool is the first product to be designed using a combination of 3D tools and artificial intelligence. Produced by laser sintering, the chair consists of a cosmetic skin and intelligent soft and hard structures. Like the biological structure and mechanism of bone, the artificial intelligence software knows where to create sufficient support. The AI stool is an intelligent product that grows in free space with an artificial intelligence 'DNA' code. This code contains all of the information required to ensure that the object will transform perfectly from a virtual design into a 3D object that achieves the optimum strength or intelligent softness whilst maintaining the desired visual aesthetic.

Low Rocking Chair by Dirk Vander Kooij
The Design As with the Endless Flow Low Chair, it took 54 prototypes before optimum comfort the chair was achieved. After an intensive process of research and development into the engineering technique, Dirk is now capable of producing tight lines and rounding off curves. Thanks to this rounding off technique, the chair has a distinct similarity to a thoughtfully wound up ball of string. This can only be done with the "Endless" production technique.

Gaudi Chair by Bram Geenen
The Design Gaudi Chair was designed using the same method as Antoni Gaudi, who made models of hanging chains, which upside-down showed him the strongest shape for his churches. Additionally, to be able to determine the structure of the chair's backrest, a software script was used. The script was based on three steps: first the distribution of forces across the surface of the chair; secondly the direction of forces defined the direction of the ribs; finally the amount of force specified the height of a rib.

One_Shot.MGX by Patrick Jouin
The Design The One_Shot.MGX is a foldable stool which is manufactured by selective laser sintering as one complete piece; the stool emerges from the machine in its final form, complete with hinges that are concealed by the graceful structure of the stool itself. By virtue of gravity combined with a simple twist, an array of rods transforms, in one flowing movement, into a small, useful, strong seat.
