ADVANCED MANUFACTURING MACHINE GUIDE

WELCOME

DANIEL O'CONNOR HEAD OF CONTENT

Hello and thanks for picking up the 2020 TCT Buyers’ Guide, which is chock full of the latest and greatest additive equipment.

Estate agents coined the phrase, ‘Location, Location, Location,’ to describe the three most essential factors in buying a home as early as 1926. During his speech at the TCT Hall of Fame inauguration, Prof Gideon Levy said the three most critical factors in purchasing a 3D printer were ‘application, application, application.’ Before you consider purchasing a machine, you will likely have a specific application in mind; if not, the choice in front of you may appear dumbfounding. Do you need quick, rough, and ready prototypes? Are you looking to create dimensionally accurate tooling? Are you planning to manufacture end-use parts? Perhaps you want to go full ‘pan-industrial’ and do all of the above. There will likely be a technology for your needs but understanding which can prove challenging. Whereas TCT Magazine puts application discovery front and centre, this Buyers’ Guide is designed with machinery discovery in mind. The guide arms you with the basic facts of a wide range of machinery from companies participating in the initiative. Getting those basics right, it turns out, is pretty essential. Believe it or not, we’ve heard more than one story of a machine being purchased and then not fitting through the office door! With details on machine size, build envelope, speed, and more from a wide range of machinery, this guide should eliminate any potential hiccups and set you on the path to adoption.

OPEN UP NEW ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING APPLICATIONS The German family-owned company ARBURG is one of the world‘s leading manufacturers of plastic processing machines. As well as ALLROUNDER injection moulding machines, its portfolio includes the freeformer and ARBURG Plastic Freeforming (APF), both of which were developed inhouse. This open system, which operates on the basis of standard granulates, has become very well established on the market.

016

In 2019 ARBURG presents the latest technological progresses that open up completely new applications. A new freeformer gives an outlook on how fibrereinforced components can be produced in future using ARBURG Plastic Freeforming (APF). Since its market introduction in 2019, the freeformer 300-3X has proven very popular It enables the processing of three components to produce resilient and

complex functional parts in a hard/soft combination. This is unique to date within the industry. The APF process is suitable for the additive manufacturing of prototypes and industrial functional components in particular. With the freeformer 200-3X for two components and the freeformer 300-3X for three components, ARBURG covers a wide range of applications. Custom-made plastic parts for consumer goods, medical implants and spare parts made from the original material are only three of the many areas for which the Freeformer is predestined. The open system offers great geometric and material freedom. Users can apply their own original materials and optimise droplet size as well as process regulation. The ARBURG material database documents qualified standard granulates such as ABS (Terluran GP 35), PA10 (Grilamid TR XE 4010), PC (Makrolon 2805), TPE-U (Elastollan C78 A15) and PP (Braskem CP 393) as well as special plastics for particular applications such as a PC approved for aerospace use (Lexan 940). The range of qualified materials is continuously being expanded.

The freeformers are in great demand for applications in medical technology, including for use within the human body. They are suitable for additive manufacturing of individual orthotics, implants made from original biocompatible material and models for surgical preparation. The system can process for example medical PLLA (Purasorb PL18) to produce facial and cranial implants or TPE (Medalist MD 12130H) to create individual customized ventilation masks. In the ARBURG Prototyping Center (APC) at the German headquarters in Lossburg, several freeformers produce benchmark parts for prospective customers. Further machines are used for the same purpose at the company‘s subsidiaries throughout the world. Preliminary trials can be conducted to determine whether the freeformer is actually suitable for the desired part, material and application.

Printer

The printer extrudes bound metal rods to shape “green” parts — similar to how an FFF printer works. This eliminates the safety requirements often associated with laser-based metal 3D printing which use loose powder and enables new features like closedcell infill for lightweight strength. Debinder

The debinder removes primary binder and prepares parts for sintering. This is the only solvent debind equipment designed specificall y for office-friendly metal 3D printing. With singlechamber proces sing, parts go in dry and come out dry and require no manual intervention mid-cycle.

Furnace

Fully-automated and sized to fit through an office door, the furnace delivers industrial-strength sintering in an office-friendly package. Built-in temperature profiles tuned to every build and material ensure uniform heating and cooling without the residual stresses introduced in laser-based systems.

The Form 3 is equipped for nonstop printing, with sensors that monitor printer conditions and allow you to start a print anywhere, anytime. With user-replaceable components, the Form 3 reduces the need for replacement printer shipments, ensuring maximum uptime.

Within the Form 3L, two LPUs work simultaneously along an optimized print path. Cross-compatible resin cartridges and user-replaceable components ensure the professional quality, ease of use, and reliability Formlabs printers are known for.

Formlabs entered the industry eight years ago with the first powerful, affordable stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer and has since sold the most professional SLA 3D printers in the world. In 2019, Formlabs introduced two new printers, the Form 3 and Form 3L. The Form 3 and Form 3L, a vast materials library, and automated post-processing will continue to help businesses bring products to market faster, take more design risks, and ultimately create better products.

SPEE3D IS FOCUSED ON MAKING MANUFACTURING EASIER. MANUFACTURING IN METAL IS TRADITIONALLY VERY COMPLEX, EXPENSIVE AND INFLEXIBLE WHICH PREVENTS INNOVATION AND ENCOURAGES WASTE.

The world needs elegant, simple, clean, flexible & reliable metal manufacturing and SPEE3D are here to deliver that. SPEE3D enable the most affordable additive manufacturing process in the world. SPEE3D 3D metal printers leverage cold spray technology for the production of industrial quality metal parts in just minutes, rather than days or weeks, at production costs.

070

SPEE3D printers make metal parts the fastest way possible. The patented process works by shooting metal powder through a jet engine nozzle at speeds up to Mach 3. The metal powder is deposited layer by layer upon a substrate intelligently controlled by a robotic arm. The sheer kinetic energy of the process causes the powder to bind together, forming a high-density part

without the need for heat to “melt” the metal. As a result, printed parts can safely be handled immediately after the build. SPEE3D technology suits the production of parts otherwise produced using sand or die casting with the added benefits of flexibility

and the ability to produce parts on-demand at the point of need. SPEE3D has just introduced a new product, ‘SPEE3Dcell’ which packages a 3D metal printer together with a heat treatment oven and a CNC 3 axis milling machine for post processing. This is everything

you need to go into production with the world’s most flexible production cell. Headquartered in Melbourne, Australian, SPEE3D is committed to helping manufacturers print their parts, their way, when they need them.

Thermwood Corporation, located in Southern Indiana and established in 1969, offers both three & five axis CNC machining centers ideally suited for the production, fabrication & trimming of wood, plastics, non-ferrous metals, composites and other advanced materials. These applications range from machining patterns and molds/plugs to trimming & machining production products for various industries such as woodworking, automotive, aerospace/aviation and defense industries. Thermwood is deeply involved in CNC technology and development, incorporating a high level of smart control technology in its products.

072

Thermwood has also developed a new product for the Additive Manufacturing industry. The Large Scale Additive Manufacturing system (LSAM) can perform both the “additive” and “subtractive” functions on the same machine. This approach, called “near net shape”, uses carbon or glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic material to quickly create a part that is nearly, but not exactly, the final net shape. The “subtractive” function then machines the part to

the exact final net shape. Thermwood’s LSAM system can use a variety of materials from low temperature to high temperature applications and is used for the production of large to very large tools, molds, masters, patterns, plugs and fixtures. A variety of industries including aerospace, automotive, marine, foundry, thermoforming and more can use the LSAM system. LSAM can print either horizontally or vertically, allowing for the printing of parts as long as the table.

Thermwood is a US based company with dealers and distributors worldwide. In addition to machine manufacturing and software development, Thermwood has a technical service organization that provides support, machine installation, training, retrofits, custom programming and production assistance. and one for the storage of filament spools.

THE FUTURE OF PRODUCTION LINES Zortrax Endureal is an industrial LPD Plus dual-extrusion 3D printer designed for processing of high-performance polymers. Its advanced thermal management capabilities qualify it as a 3rd generation machine according to a classification suggested by industry thought leaders like Manuel Garcia-Leiner.

084

The machine is a closed architecture with a printing chamber capable of sustaining temperatures high enough to achieve optimal mechanical properties in parts fabricated with challenging materials like PEEK and other high-temperature filaments. Advanced thermal management systems enable users to precisely define desired temperatures at each stage of the 3D printing process. To make that possible, the Endureal is divided into three thermally shielded zones: one for the printed model, one for the extruder and filament cables,

Multiple safety systems ensure seamless, fail-safe operation. The Endureal can detect overheating, power outages, malfunctioning components, or jammed filaments, and prevent failed prints in all such scenarios. Even things like humidity in the filaments’ compartment are constantly monitored and controlled. All this enables reliable, on-demand manufacturing of high-performance parts highly resistant to wear, abrasion, radiation, and a wide range of temperatures. Exactly as needed in high-tech industries.

RELIABLE 3D PRINTING SOLUTIONS Zortrax offers a wide range of thoroughly engineered additive manufacturing equipment. M300 DUAL The M300 Dual is an LPD Plus, polymerbased 3D printer which can work in either dual or single extrusion modes. In dualextrusion mode it interchangeably prints with two filaments: one for them model, and one for soluble support structures. In single extrusion the machine works exclusively with a model material. This way the printer can manufacture intricately designed parts with advanced internal geometries. INKSPIRE The Inkspire is an UV LCD resin 3D printer. It build models by solidifying photopolymers by displaying subsequent model’s layers on a high resolution LCD screen with a UV light source placed beneath it. The Inspire is meant for relatively small but very precise

prints. It is also very fast as the entire layer is solidified all at once. APOLLER The Apoller is an SVS (Smart Vapor Smoothing) post-processing device. It automatically removes visible layering from models printed on all FFF 3D printers by superficially melting their surfaces with MEK or acetone vapors. Each smoothing session lasts about 3 hours. The Apoller has an ATEX certificate of safety required for equipment meant for explosive atmospheres. ZORTRAX Zortrax is a well established manufacturer of 3D printers, printing materials, postprocessing devices, and software solutions. Founded in 2015, the company quickly became one of the top additive manufacturing brands. Zortrax machines are now working at world-leading organizations like Bosch and NASA.
