Dear Horned Frog Fans: What a historic year for TCU! Horned Frog teams reached new levels of excellence on the field and in the classroom, while alumni and fans set attendance records at Football, Baseball, Volleyball, Swimming/Diving and Soccer games. The Frog Club established a new mark in fundraising for athletics scholarships and the Lettermen’s Association surpassed 1,000 members and had a record 30 percent participation rate – nearly three times the national average. ESPN’s “College GameDay” came to our campus for the first time. The City of Fort Worth dyed the Trinity River purple. The City of Omaha adopted Baseball as its hometown favorite during the College World Series. Add it all up, and TCU Athletics unquestionably is on the rise. That success starts in the classroom as TCU student-athletes posted a 2.98 departmental cumulative grade point average in the Spring 2010 semester, the highest since TCU started reporting scores in Fall 1998. Fifty-three percent of the student-athletes had GPAs above 3.0, including 24 percent at 3.5 or higher. Most importantly, 83 Horned Frogs graduated during the 2009-10 academic year, while one former student-athlete was named a recipient of the NCAA Degree Completion Award. Overall, 15 of the 20 programs had GPAs of 3.0 or better, two more than a year ago. Sixteen were above the 2.9 mark. On the field, Horned Frog teams made history. Football, Baseball and Rifle finished the season in the national top 6. Reaching as high as No. 4 in the polls, Football broke into the Bowl Championship Series for the first time ever and reached the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Baseball finished with its highest-ever ranking of No. 3 after winning the Fort Worth Regional, the Super Regional in Austin against the Texas Longhorns and playing in the College World Series in Omaha for the first time in program history. The team won three games in its side of the bracket and was nine innings away from the championship series. Rifle won the NCAA championship to give TCU its first team title since 1983. TCU was the only school in the nation to have a team play in the BCS, win a game at the CWS and win a national championship. Those teams were not our only titlists. Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Women’s Basketball and Men’s Swimming all were crowned champions of the Mountain West Conference. All told, 15 of the 20 athletics programs placed teams or individuals in the NCAA postseason, including Cross Country, Women’s Golf, Men’s Golf, Volleyball and both squads for the indoor and outdoor track teams. TCU hosted two NCAA events on campus — the Fort Worth Regional in Baseball and the NCAA Championships in Rifle. These events were successful and the student-athletes from those teams were very appreciative of the many additional hours of work from both the staff and volunteers who made it possible for them to compete for the championships at their home venues. Thanks to you, overall athletic contributions in the fiscal year 2009-10 totaled more than $8.1 million with an all-time high of $4.45 million of that designated to the Frog Club “Scholarships for Champions” program. As summer comes to an end, the Jane Justin Fieldhouse at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium is being completed, while final plans are made for the renovation of Amon G. Carter Stadium. The project is the result of a three-year study by the TCU Athletics Stadium Committee, headed by Board of Trustees Vice Chair Clarence Scharbauer III, which worked with sports design/architecture firm HKS, marketing groups ISG and CSL, as well as the TCU Physical Plant and TCU coaches, to develop concepts. The Amon G. Carter Foundation’s lead gift of $15 million in 2009 created momentum for a fund-raising effort that began in February. Some 35 donors contributed $105.7 million before construction started. The TCU Board of Trustees approved the project in July. In the coming days, you will learn more about this historic undertaking. program’s first-ever overall NCAA Championship. The Horned Frogs defeated Alaska-Fairbanks, 4,675 to 4,653, erasing a sixpoint deficit entering the last day of competition. With five shooters earning All-America honors, TCU became the first allfemale team to win the title in the coed sport’s 31-year history. It was TCU’s first team NCAA championship since 1983.

Football made history in 2009, tying a 74-year-old mark for most wins in a season (12) and reaching the Bowl Championship Series for the first time. The program dominated its non-conference slate, highlighted by road victories against Atlantic Coast Conference foes Virginia and Clemson. The team was equally dominant in league play, going a perfect 8-0 in the Mountain West Conference for the second time in four seasons and outscoring its MWC rivals 349-90. The Frogs climbed as high as No. 3 in the polls and were the first choice of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl as the highest-ranked non-automatic BCS qualifier. The team finished the campaign with its best end-of-season ranking (sixth) since the 1930s and its second consecutive top-10 finish. Under Coach Gary Patterson, the Frogs have been ranked in the final poll six of nine seasons. 2009 was the fifth campaign of at least 11 victories in the last seven years and the sixth season of double-digit wins in the last eight. For a second straight year, the defense was ranked No. 1 in the nation in fewest rushing yards allowed and fewest first downs allowed per game. It was the fourth time in 10 years TCU was ranked No. 1 in total defense. The offense rolled to school records in points scored (498), total yards (5,937) and touchdowns (59). 7

Baseball produced its most successful run in program history in 2010. It dominated the Mountain West Conference, clinching its fifth-consecutive regular-season championship and fourth MWC Tournament title in five years. The Frogs made a seventh-straight appearance in the NCAA postseason and hosted the Fort Worth Regional for a second time as the No. 1 seed. The Frogs swept the regional with wins over Lamar, Arizona and Baylor to set up a Super Regional rematch with national No. 2 seed Texas in Austin. With overpowering pitching and clutch hitting, TCU conquered the Longhorns in three games to advance to the College World Series for the first time. The team won three games in Omaha, including a dramatic 11-7 victory over Florida State in an elimination game to earn the label â&#x20AC;&#x153;the darling of Omaha,â&#x20AC;? according to the Omaha World-Herald. With 54 victories, the club established a new mark for wins in a season and was ranked No. 3 in the nation by all the major polls, the highest-ever ranking in TCU Baseball history. 9

In c o mp eti t i on The TCU Horned Frogs’ 2009-10 season produced nationally ranked programs in Football, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Rifle and Equestrian. From Football’s trip to the Fiesta Bowl to Baseball’s trip to the College World Series, the Frogs offered plenty to cheer about. In all, Horned Frog student-athletes earned 51 All-America honors and 108 All-Mountain West Conference selections, plus nine relay teams. Raisi ng t heir Game s Fifteen of TCU’s 20 programs were represented in the postseason in 2009-10 by teams or individuals. Football played in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the program’s first appearance in the Bowl Championship Series and the 11th bowl trip in 12 seasons. Rifle captured the NCAA Championship at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum to become TCU’s first team NCAA champions since 1983. Volleyball made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Baseball was a No. 1 seed and Regional host for the second time ever as it won all three games at Lupton Stadium en route to a win at the Super Regionals in Austin and eventually to the College World Series in Omaha, where it won three games over seven days. Women’s Tennis reached the NCAAs for the seventh straight time, while the men’s team made the tournament for the 19th time in 20 years. Women’s Basketball returned to the Big Dance for the ninth time in 10 years. The streak for Women’s Golf reached 15, while Men’s Golf made it 21 in a row. 21

Football Won the Mountain West Conference title and made its first BCS appearance with a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Horned Frogs played in their 11th bowl game in the last 12 seasons.

volleyball Capped the most successful season in its program history by reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time. TCU defeated Rice in an opening-round match before falling to national runner-up Texas in the second round.

Women’s Basketball Won its first Mountain West Conference regular-season championship and reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in 10 seasons.

Men’s Swimming & Diving The men’s swimming and diving team won the Mountain West Conference dual-meet title. Edgar Crespo finished 27th in the 100-breaststroke at the 2010 NCAA Championships. He became just the second Horned Frog swimmer since 1997 to participate at the NCAA Championships.

Rifle Won the NCAA championship in a competition hosted by TCU for the second straight year. The Horned Frogs became the first all-female squad to win the national title. TCU also captured the smallbore national championship, while freshman Sarah Scherer was the individual champion in smallbore. Erin Lorenzen was named Most Outstanding Performer at the NCAA Championships.

Women’s Golf Made its 15th consecutive postseason appearance. TCU tied for 19th at the NCAA Championships and is one of only seven programs nationally to finish in the top 20 each of the last four seasons.

Men’s Golf Reached the NCAA postseason for a 21st consecutive season. The Horned Frogs were third at the South Central Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field Women’s indoor track and field placed 28th at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the third-highest finish in program history. The TCU men and women combined to break two school records while Neidra Covington, Kristal Juarez, Whitney Gipson and Festus Kigen earned All-America honors.

Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field The Horned Frogs sent 25 student-athletes and all four relays to the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Overall, eight student-athletes and the men’s 4x400 represented the Horned Frogs at the final round of the NCAA Championships. Neidra Covington paced TCU with All-America honors in the long jump and triple jump.

Women’s Tennis Won the Mountain West Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAAs for the seventh straight season. Nina Munch-Soegaard participated in the NCAA Singles Championships, while Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuohimaa reached the Sweet 16 in doubles.

Men’s Tennis Won the Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship to reach the NCAA postseason for the 19th time in 20 seasons. Emanuel Brighiu and Christopher Price represented the Horned Frogs at the NCAA Doubles Championships.

Baseball Won the Mountain West Conference championship for the fifth consecutive season, representing all five years it has been in the league. The Horned Frogs hosted and won an NCAA Regional for the second straight year before winning a Super Regional series at Texas en route to their first trip to the College World Series.

They posted a departmental cumulative grade-point average of 2.98 in the Spring 2010 semester, the highest since TCU started reporting scores in Fall 1998. Seventy-four Frogs made the Deanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s List. Most importantly, 83 student-athletes graduated during the 2009-10 academic year.

The departmental cumulative grade-point average for Spring 2010 was 2.980. In Fall 2009, it was 2.975. The all-sport GPA for Spring 2010 was 2.965, while it was 2.905 in Fall 2009.

Fifty-three percent of the student-athletes had GPAs over 3.000 in the Spring 2010 semester, including 24 percent at 3.5 or higher.

•

Twenty-four student-athletes posted a 4.0 GPA in the Spring 2010 semester, while 27 achieved the mark in Fall 2009. Fifty-one Frogs made the Dean’s List in the Spring 2010 semester. Forty-eight made the list in Fall 2009.

Fifteen of 20 athletics programs carry GPAs over 3.0, and 16 are above the 2.9 mark.

Eighty-three TCU student-athletes (30 in December, 53 in May) graduated during the 2009-10 academic year.

One former TCU student-athlete was named a recipient of the NCAA Degree Completion Award for 2009-10.

Based on the 2008-09 data, the TCU Athletic Department’s APR was the highest in six years of reporting at 980. For six consecutive years, the overall departmental rolling APR score has risen and is now at a 973.

in the community Members of the baseball team helped raise awareness for breast cancer by hosting the first-ever TCU Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Baseball Clinic in February. Players instructed about 50 guests in learning about the game and trying their hand at throwing pitches, taking batting practice and other practice routines. The players also answered audience questions about the team and hosted a breast cancer awareness day at the ballpark.The effort helped raise $1,000 for cancer research (opposite page), which was donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. TCU student-athletes care about the community and make a point to get involved. Other Frog teams visited more than 30 schools and hospitals,built houses through Habitat for Humanity and participated in Fort Worth area shoe and clothing drives.

2009-10 highlights •

The TCU Athletics Department and Score a Goal in the Classroom combined efforts to host the annual Reading Frogs event in February at the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility. Thousands of books were given away by nearly 100 TCU student-athletes to about 1,000 elementary and middle-school students from Fort Worth and surrounding communities.

Student-athletes from multiple teams raised awareness for Project Purple - an initiative that allows needy children the opportunity to attend TCU home athletic events.

frog nation rising If there is one lesson to be learned from the 2009 football season, it’s that the city of Fort Worth can’t have enough purple light bulbs. Mere hours before TCU’s home game against Utah in November, city workers scrambled to find every conceivable way to bathe Cowtown in the Frogs’ home colors. Mission accomplished. From downtown buildings to a section of the Trinity River to Mayor Mike Moncrief’s wardrobe, Fort Worth embraced TCU in nearly every way. Burnett Plaza (shown), Will Rogers Memorial Center, sections of Lancaster Drive and other places rigged up displays of purple passion. The fervor started in earnest during the second week of November when Moncrief proclaimed that Friday as “Go Purple Day.” Two weeks later, he issued another proclamation and vowed that the city would show similar support for the Frogs next season. “This university and this team have put Fort Worth in the national spotlight,” he told the local media. “That spotlight is going to benefit everyone.” The excitement spread to private businesses, including Chesapeake Energy, which turned the top of its downtown building purple. The day after Thanksgiving, the mayor also ordered that a fork of the Trinity River be dyed purple and renamed Horned Frog River (opposite page). City workers sprayed “Go Frogs” on the river bank (opposite page). “From this day until the end of the 2009-2010 TCU football season, truly purple fever runs through it — our city, our citizenry and our river.”

national spotlight Following the Football team’s climb to No. 4 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings, ESPN’s “College Gameday” headed to Fort Worth in November for the first time ever to cover the Horned Frogs’ battle against Utah. With the Campus Commons as the backdrop, the popular Saturday morning show brought an estimated 4,000-plus people clamoring for seconds of camera time. The scene impressed analyst Kirk Herbstreit to the point that he declared the TCU campus “one of the best venues we’ve ever taken the show,” while show partner Lee Corso donned the SuperFrog costume head to predict a Frog victory. Corso would finish the year 2-0 backing the Frogs, as he also wore it when he picked TCU to beat BYU at Provo a month earlier. The Frogs also were selected by sports apparel giant NIKE to wear the company’s limited edition Pro Combat uniforms, showcasing high-tech design and engineering. The national exposure the team brought to the city was enough to prompt the Fort Worth chapter of the American Advertising Federation to present the program with the 2009 Dateline Award. In December, Fox Sports interviewed Gary Patterson live during the announcement of the Bowl Championship Series matchups. 34

TCU will host the 2010-11 AFC Champion for the week leading up to Super Bowl XLV. The team will use the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility and Cox Field, Morris Practice Fields and Amon G. Carter Stadium.

•

Sports Illustrated writer Austin Murphy featured the Football team in October. The four-page feature highlighted Coach Gary Patterson’s knack for turning offensive players in high school into defensive standouts at the college level.

•

In March, TCU agreed on a fiveyear partnership with WBAP 820 AM and 96.7 FM, beginning in the 2010-11 athletics campaign. It will make TCU one of the nation’s only schools to have its football games broadcast on both FM and AM frequencies.

•

Baseball was the subject of a seven-episode original series on the Mountain West Sports Network called “Reaching the Peak,” which shadowed the Frogs all the way to the College World Series. The team had a nationleading 24 appearances on national televsion, including 16 during the regular season on The Mtn. and eight on ESPN or ESPN2 during the NCAA Super Regionals and College World Series. On ESPN networks alone, the Frogs appeared in almost 30 hours of programming.

FROG CLUB scholarships for champions Monumental growth highlighted a historic 2009-10 year for the TCU Frog Club as it ushered in its 70th year. “Started in 1940 by a group of local businessmen who wanted to support TCU Athletics, the Frog Club continues to stand behind winning Horned Frog programs,” said TCU Frog Club Executive Director John Denton ‘85. While the group wants the Frogs to win on the field, it knows that carrying momentum into a studentathlete’s post-competition life is most important. The group raised an all-time record of $4.45 million for TCU Athletics scholarships, an 11 percent increase over the previous year. It is the third straight year to surpass the $4 million mark. The Frog Club also saw its membership swell to a new high of 4,596, including 1,158 new donors, a 34 percent increase from 2008-09. 36

Raised a record $1.566 million by the 80-person all-volunteer Membership Team. It was the group’s fourth consecutive year to best the $1 million mark. Frog Club financial contributions have increased by 90 percent over the last five years.

Added The Charles Coody Classic golf tournament to its event menu, with the 13th Annual Coody Classic, which contributes scholarship funds to benefit the Frog Club. Entering its 14th year, the Coody Classic becomes the Frog Club’s spring golf event and is named for the TCU alumnus, Men’s Golf letterman and 1971 Masters Champion.

Generated $205,000 through the 31st annual Horned Frog Classic golf tournament at Colonial Country Club for women’s and men’s golf scholarships.

Updated the official Frog Club website, www.tcufrogclub.com, to make it easier for members and donors to give online. Upgrades enabled the Frog Club to receive more than $1.5 million in online gifts.

Welcomed more than 1,000 kids and families at annual Frog Club Palooza, where TCU coaches and student-athletes signed autographs, handed out posters and watched the band and cheerleaders perform. 37

The system was used to distribute thousands of tickets this year to the 2010 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the 2010 College World Series, NCAA Fort Worth Regional and Super Regional and other events. All donors and season ticket holders are assigned points based on several criteria, including annual Frog Club contributions, capital project gifts, cumulative athletic giving and season ticket loyalty. Lettermen’s association Tradition. Camaraderie. Teamwork. Achievement. The ideals embodied by TCU student-athletes live on in the Lettermen’s Association. With the theme “A Common Bond ... The Tradition Continues,” the Association exceeded participation and membership goals in 2009-10. The organization surpassed the milestone of 1,000 active members, which is an increase of 19 percent from the previous year. Membership spans more than 20 sports and nine decades, and no one epitomizes the Association more than its oldest active member M.E. Chappell ‘31 (right), who at 100 years old continues to pay dues and support TCU as a multi-sport season ticket holder. Amazingly, he has missed only one Association meeting in 70 years. The Association honored Mr. Chappell, a two-sport letterwinner, at its annual meeting in May. 40

JANE JUSTIN FIELD HOUSE The Jane and John S. Justin Foundation donated $1.5 million for a 5,000-square-foot field house at GarveyRosenthal Soccer Stadium. Opening August 2010, it will include home and visitor locker rooms, an officials locker room, a training room, offices, lounge area and wrap-around raised viewing terrace. Averaging a programrecord 1,504 spectators per contest, Soccer ranked No. 10 in the final NCAA Division I Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Soccer home attendance figures. 54

SCHOLLMAIER basketball complex SCREENS Decorative 20-footby-14-foot wind screens were added outside the Schollmaier Basketball Complex in June 2010 to face Stadium Drive.

TENNIS PRO SHOP renovation A $300,000 commitment by the Mary Potishman Lard Trust has helped upgrade the pro shop of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The shop, which is open to the public, features TCU apparel and tennis equipment.

Amon G. Carter stadium renovation

“magnificent in beauty and magnitude” When Amon G. Carter Stadium opened in 1930, awestruck onlookers called it “magnificent in its beauty and magnitude.” Its 1930s art deco style remains a hallmark of the venerable facility, which has seen the likes of Sam Baugh, Davey O’Brien, Jim Swink, Bob Lilly, LaDainian Tomlinson and others scramble over its surface. Following its 80th season, Amon G. Carter Stadium will undergo a $105 million renovation to its west side and north end to bring 21st century amenities to the venue, while preserving its vintage charm and retro look. From November 2010 to September 2011, the stadium’s upper deck and west and north stands will be reconstructed to their original height to ensure the stadium remains the Fort Worth landmark that it is today. New concourses, restrooms, concession areas, ramps and elevators will vastly improve the fan experience. The stadium will also feature 24 suites and space for up to 2,300 club seats, in addition to new scoreboards, new pressbox and more seating in the north end zone. Temporarily, the stadium will have reduced capacity of 40,000 for a full season of games in the 2011 season, but it can be expanded to more than 50,000. The stadium is scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2012. The project is the result of a four-year study by the TCU Athletics Stadium Committee, headed by Board of Trustees Vice Chair Clarence Scharbauer III. The committee worked with sports design/architecture firm HKS Sports & Entertainment Group, marketing groups ISG and CSL, the TCU Physical Plant and coaches, to develop concepts. The Amon G. Carter Foundation’s lead gift of $15 million in 2009 created momentum for a fund-raising effort that began in February 2010 and concluded in August. In a mere seven months, some 34 donors contributed $105.7 million to the project, which the TCU Board of Trustees approved in July. 56

plush carpet, bar and flatscreen televisions.

The $16-18 million facility will provide offices and locker rooms for the six Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Soccer and the Rifle and Equestrian teams, as well as coaches’ offices for Baseball.
