“Student-Athletes” to “Tourist-athletes”
he TCU women’s rifle team are not only true student-athletes in every sense of the phrase, but they have also become true tourist-athletes as well.
Over last few seasons, the Horned Frogs have traveled to every corner of the United States and have also flown outside the continental U.S. to Alaska for a match at UAAnchorage. Part of the well-rounded experience of being a Horned Frog shooter is the ability to see and learn about different parts of the country that one might never have had the chance to experience. When the matches are over and the scores are all tallied, TCU Head Coach Karen Monez enjoys taking the team to see the local sights from the beautiful beaches of Lake Tahoe to the mesmerizing views of Alaskan ice sculptures. This season, the Frogs will once again scatter across the country competing against the very best competition in the country. But once the match is over, the good times begin, and the best memories are those away from the firing range. 2

Their professors are leaders in their fields, and the academics are rigorous. A global perspective permeates TCU, and students have numerous opportunities to study abroad. With a 14:1 student/faculty ratio and a teacher-scholar model that results in close, mentoring relationships, TCU fosters discovery, creativity and leadership. It’s a culture that enables the search for meaning and success. A TCU education is more than the sum of semester hours - it’s an exciting living and learning experience that grows from the mission, “to educate individuals, to think and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community.” 6
T
TCU: Then and Now
CU was founded in 1873 by Addison and Randolph Clark in Thorp Spring, Texas, as AddRan Male and Female College. The school was changed to AddRan Christian University in 1889 followed by a location change to Waco in 1895.
In 1902, the name was once again changed to Texas Christian University and was relocated to downtown Fort Worth in 1910 when the college in Waco was burned. In 1911, TCU opened three new buildings on the present campus, which has been a part of the community for 98 years. Today, TCU encompasses 271 acres in a residential neighborhood five miles from the heart of downtown Fort Worth - a welcoming city with a vibrant mix of commerce, culture and entertainment. In recent years, TCU has invested over $360-million in new facilities in addition to upgrades to residence halls, classrooms and laboratories. Prior to the beginning of the 2008-09 academic campaign, TCU had completed or was in the midst of over $155-million in new buildings and renovations. Always on the cutting edge, TCU offers high-tech classrooms and wired/wireless networking throughout the campus to provide easy, secure access to information technology resources. WWW.GOFROGS.COM

Frog Pride What the Heck is a Horned Frog?
The scientific name for this Texas reptile is phrynosoma cornutum; in Greek, phrynos means “a toad” and soma means “body” - in Latin, cornutus means “horned.” Their primary diet is 80-to-100 red harvester ants per day. The typical Horned Frog is three-to-five inches long. Horned Frogs are cold-blooded animals that have an unusual pineal gland, resembling a “third eye” on the top of their head, which zoologists believe is part of their regulation system.
T
When angered or frightened, Horned Frogs can squirt a fine, foot-stream of blood from their eyes.
The Pride of the Purple
raditions run deep at TCU, and it begins with the Horned Frog. Some say the Horned Frog was chosen because the football practice field was overrun with the small, spiny lizards. Others say its feisty attitude simply matched the tough frontier spirit shown by TCU itself. Either way, every student-athlete that dons the Purple and White is proud to be called a Horned Frog.
The Horned Frog has been TCU’s mascot longer than TCU has been the University’s name. Four students helped make the decision in 1897, when AddRan Christian College (renamed TCU in 1902) was located in Waco. For over 100 years, the Horned Frog has been the calling sign of those that wander the campus of TCU. Other traditions at TCU include the school’s colors of Purple and White. The former represents royalty; the latter a clean game. Swaying while singing the alma mater is a must as is learning how to do the Horned Frog hand sign. (Make a peace sign; fold those two fingers and you have it!) Every student needs a little help sometimes so when they have a big test coming up, they walk straight to the center of campus to rub the nose of the Horned Frog sculpture. New students fresh to the TCU campus may not have any idea what Riff Ram Bah Zoo means now, but they’ll quickly discover that it’s one of the oldest and proudest cheers in the country. If there is one thing that every student will leave TCU with, it’s the pride of knowing that you are forever a HORNED FROG! 8
The Horned Frog was named the State Reptile of Texas.

The TCU Experience Prospects
Boosters
You are a prospect if you have started classes for the ninth grade. Before the ninth grade, you may become a prospect if a university provides you (or your family or friends) any financial aid or other benefit that is not usually provided to prospective student-athletes.
A "booster" is known in NCAA terms as a "representative of the institution's athletics interests." You become a booster if:
Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete (Prospect)?
How do I know if I’m being recruited?
There are several ways to be recruited: (1) a coach may provide you with an official paid visit to view the campus, (2) a coach may arrange an in-person, off-campus meeting with you (or your family), or (3) a coach or staff member may call you (or your family) on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment. Only coaches and athletic department staff can be involved in the recruiting process. Athletic representatives are prohibited from contacting a prospective student-athlete or members of his/her family by telephone, letter or in-person for the point of encouraging participation in athletics at TCU. Please contact the coaching staff if you know of a prospect that may have the interest and ability to participate in intercollegiate athletics at TCU. The coach can then take appropriate action.
What is Considered “Being Recruited?”
A prospect is considered recruited if a coach, staff member or representative of the institution’s athletic interest attempts to persuade a prospect (or family member) to enroll at their institution and participate in the athletics program. A student is considered “recruited” if any of the following actions are taken: (1) the institution provides the prospect with an “official visit” (i.e. expenses paid) to its campus; (2) a coach arranges for an in-person, off-campus (home or prospect’s school) encounter with the prospect; (3) transportation to campus by a coach or booster; and/or (4) receiving more than one telephone call from a coach for recruiting purposes.
What is a Contact?
A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent(s) or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletic representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of greeting. NOTE: At the Division I level, athletic representatives (boosters) may not contact you for the purpose of recruiting.
How/When May a Prospect be Contacted?
In all sports, a prospect may not be contacted in-person, off-campus until their senior year in high school. Prospects may not receive correspondence until their junior year in high school with the exception of men’s basketball (June 15th after sophomore year). University questionnaires/camp brochures may be sent prior to a prospect’s junior year.
When May a Prospect Visit an Institution?
Prospects may visit an institution’s campus at their own expense (“unofficial visit”) and receive complimentary passes to an athletic contest anytime except during “dead periods.” Check with the institution for dates. There is no limit to the number of times a prospect may visit a campus at his/her own expense. Prospects may receive an expense paid visit (“official visit”) only after they have begun classes for their senior year and have registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and submitted transcripts and test scores to the institution. Prospects are limited to a maximum of five official visits.
Who is a "booster"?
• you have ever been a member of any organization promoting TCU Athletics, • you have ever made any donation to the TCU Frog Club, TCU Athletics or any TCU booster group, • you have ever assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospective student-athletes, • you have ever assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families, • you have promoted TCU Athletics in any other manner. NCAA Bylaw 13.02.13.1 mandates that when you become a booster, you retain that identity for the rest of your life. As a representative of TCU's athletics interests, you are bound by NCAA rules. TCU is responsible for your actions.
The Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse
What is the Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse?
The NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse is an organization that works with the NCAA to determine a student’s eligibility for athletics partcipation in his or her first year of collegiate enrollment. Students who want to participate in college sports during their first year of enrollment must register with the Clearinghouse.
How do I register with the Clearinghouse?
Log on to www.ncaaclearinghouse.net and select prospective student-athletes. Complete the registration and print the transcript release form, sign it and give it to your high school guidance counselor. When you register, be sure to compete the amateurism questionnaire as well.
What can TCU Offer You to Attend?
You (or your family) may not receive any benefit, inducement, or arrangements (e.g. cash, clothing, cars, gifts, loans, etc…) to encourage you to sign a National Letter of Intent. TCU may offer you a one-year scholarship that covers room and board, tuition and fees, and required course-related books, or any part of these. NOTE: TCU can recommend that this aid is renewed each year, as is the general practice at the institution, but this renewal is not guaranteed.
Correspondence and Recruiting Materials What can TCU send me?
A Division I institution may provide you with the following materials for general correspondence, including letters, U.S. Postal Service postcards and institutional note cards and materials printed on plain white paper with black ink; business cards; e-mails; NCAA education information; pre-enrollment information subsequent to signing a National Letter of Intent with the University; and one athletic publication (media or recruiting guide) which may include one color printing inside.
Institutional Control
"Institutional control" of athletics is a fundamental requirement of NCAA rules. The NCAA constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for ensuring that studentathletes, members of the institution's staff and other individuals or groups that represent the institution's athletics interests comply with all applicable NCAA regulations.

Frogs Host 2009 NCAA Championships
uring the 2008-09 campaign, the Horned Frogs’ rifle team earned the distinction of being the first TCU program to host the NCAA National Championships. The
Frogs had never advanced to the NCAA Championships until three seasons ago,
but since then has posted three consecutive top-five finishes.
The Frogs also had the honor of being the only all-female squad of the eight competing teams at the NCAA National Championships where seven teams were co-ed programs.
The Frogs hosted the smallbore competition at the TCU Rifle Range, located in the ROTC Building on campus, while air rifle competition took place in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Large screens displayed the targets of all shooters, and spectators could see the shots as they were fired, which were then scored instantly.

NCAA Championships Return to TCU
or the second consecutive year, TCU has been selected as the site of the 2010 NCAA National Championships, which will take place on Mar. 12-13, at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum and TCU Rifle Range.
“The NCAA Committee couldn’t be more excited to return the rifle championships to TCU. TCU succeeded in taking the championships to another level last year, and we know it will only be better in 2010,” said Paul Klimitas, Chair of the Men’s and Women’s Rifle Committee.
