Electricity bills to drop by 25% Fuel factor forecast to decrease significantly over the coming months STARTING this month, FortisTCI customers can expect “significant reductions” in their energy bills compared to earlier this year thanks to a declining fuel factor. The power company has predicted a sharp dip over the next several months resulting in a 23 to 27 percent drop in power costs for residents and 20 percent decrease for businesses. Medium hotels and supermarkets will see an estimated 23 percent reduction, and large hotels a 26 percent saving on their electricity bills when compared to January. FortisTCI president and CEO Eddinton Powell said: “The company has closely monitored the decline in global fuel prices and is glad to see the reduction in cost from our fuel supplier that can now be passed on to our customers. “The reduction in the cost of energy and the fuel factor
In October, it is projected customers will see a reduction in the fuel factor of up to 80 percent due to the drop in world market prices
will have a positive impact and provide further economic stimulus to our customers. “While this means a reduction in electricity bills, customers must continue to manage their electricity consumption,
especially as some continue to spend more time at home due to the pandemic, and as we enter the warmer summer months.” The fuel factor is likely to drop 52 percent in July, 68 percent in August and 73 percent in
September, while in October customers are likely to see an 80 percent decline over January. The decline in energy costs comes as a result of the near historic drop in world market fuel prices this past March and
April, a company statement on Thursday (June 11) explained. “While the fuel supply chain presents a lag in effective prices, FortisTCI passes these reductions to customers as quickly as possible.” The information provided is a projection and fuel prices may differ at the time of purchase as global crude and diesel commodity markets remain very volatile, the company added. FortisTCI offered TCI customers a 30-day pause on disconnection and a 60-day pause on penalties to ease their financial burdens during lockdown. However, the relief came to an end on May 31, when the company told customers to pay up or face late fees. In February, the Government approved the power giant’s request for an increase in rates of 6.8, however, the company agreed to delay its introduction until June 30.

INCORRECT public use of gloves may give a “false sense of security” and could lead to the transmission of germs including the Covid-19 virus, the Ministry of Health said this week. Prolonged use and unintentional touching of the face, eyes or a cell phone could lead to contamination and transmission, the ministry added in a statement on Tuesday (June 9). Based on guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the Ministry of Health advised the public against their use. Meanwhile, businesses
which require employees and customers to use single-use gloves, should provide clear instructions for the use, removal and disposal of these gloves. Such instructions should be readily available and easily understood, the ministry advised. The need for the use of medical gloves by various categories of healthcare workers and people caring for ill relatives at home who have Covid-19 is well defined by the WHO. They reduce the risk of contamination of hands with blood and body fluids, and the risk of germ dissemination to the environment and transmission from the worker
to the patient. Gloves used while handling cases of Covid-19 at home should be placed in a bag and tied before disposal into the waste bin. To defend against contracting Covid-19, other members of the public should practice proper hand hygiene, maintain a two-metre social distance, avoid crowded spaces and wear a mask. Godly Petiote was fatally shot in Providenciales in March
One brother discharged of Godly Petiote’s murder KENO Kanvon Taylor, one of two brothers initially charged with the murder of Godly Petiote in March this year, has been discharged by Chief Justice Mabel Agyemang. Eighteen-year-old Taylor and his older brother Jumillo Isma, 21, were arrested and charged in March with the shooting death of 21-year-old Petiote on March 11. The brothers appeared in the Supreme Court on Friday, June 5, via video link for their sufficiency hearing on the murder and other firearm related offences. During the hearing, Ashwood Forbes, attorney for Taylor, made forceful arguments for his client’s release on the murder count, which were accepted. Taylor was also charged with possession of an imitation firearm and escaping lawful custody. Shortly after his arrest on the murder charge, Taylor had escaped from the Grace Bay Police station on March 14. Days later he was rearrested and charged.
Three police constables were later placed on administrative leave pending investigations into the circumstances of Taylor’s escape. Meanwhile, older brother Isma is still facing charges of murder, carrying a firearm, carrying ammunition, discharging a firearm, and discharging ammunition. Attorney Lara Maroof-Misick is representing Isma. The case has been adjourned to a date in July. At about 10.33am on March 11, police officers were dispatched to a location on International Drive off Cherokee Road in Providenciales with reports that someone had been shot. The victim - Godly Petiote - had been shot multiple times. He was subsequently rushed to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre where he succumbed to his injuries the next day. Petiote had been gunned down on his way to work at Beach Enclave. (By Delana Isles)

Two murdered in Providenciales shootings TCI records 10th and 11th homicides of 2020 BY REBECCA BIRD A WOMAN, 32, and a 20-yearold man who both died last Friday from gunshot wounds are the latest victims of violent crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The homicides are the 10th and 11th already this year – putting the territory on track to have one of the highest per capita murder rates in the Caribbean for 2020. The first victim, Pierecine Petite, was fatally shot off South Dock Road in Providenciales shortly after 4pm on June 5, the police press office said. She and a young man who was also injured in the shooting were taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for treatment. The woman succumbed to her injures at 4.16pm. Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting who visited the scene offered his condolences to the family of the murdered woman and said these bold acts of gun violence must stop. “The shooting that took place this afternoon was very brazen and it is obvious that these criminals are not afraid of the law,” he said in a press release on Saturday. He said that police are investigating the circumstances behind the shooting. “What we’re asking for right now, anyone that was along the road adjacent to the Red Bar or on South Dock Road, in between those areas, if you saw anything that happened during this occurrence to please call us right now.” Twenty-year-old Garfield Dennie also died on June 5, weeks after sustaining gunshot wounds in a shooting in Blue Hills, Providenciales. Shots were fired on Ralph Close at about 8pm on May 23, during which another young man, aged 19, was injured. Both men were taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre. Dennie, who had a gunshot wound to the upper body, was treated immediately by the trauma team. TCI Hospital press officer Nikira John said: “He

It is obvious that these criminals are not afraid of the law – Police Commissioner Trevor Botting was admitted to the High Dependency Unit for continuous care and monitoring and was transferred overseas for tertiary level care.” Dennie was airlifted to Jamaica for further medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries. The 19-year-old, who sustained a gunshot wound to the forearm, received immediate care. “The patient was in stable condition and did not require hospital admission thereafter,” John said. This horrific incident brings the murder count to 11 in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the seventh murder since the territory was placed under lockdown. Nine-year-old Samardia Karioka was killed in her Grand Turk home on May 20. Her mother Najaj Karioka, 42, was taken into custody following the
death. Percy Williams, 77, was shot dead in his Blue Hills home on May 3 as he tried to protect his family from armed robbers. A murdered man, who is yet to be identified, was found at Blue Hills dump site on April 18 after reports were made of shots being fired in the vicinity. On April 13, Martin Barga, a 44-year old construction worker from the Dominican Republic, was tragically shot and killed on Millennium Highway in Blue Hills. On March 18, Acyjeune Brunorlien, 57, was shot dead during a home invasion in Five Cays, making it the third murder in just over a week. Twenty-two-year-old Horace Wignal Junior, known as DJ Spookie, died from gunshot wounds on January 21 following a home invasion in Long Bay, Providenciales, earlier that month.
The first murder of the year was that of 29-year-old Fritz Gerald Mossoul who died in Providenciales from gunshot wounds on January 17. In 2019 the TCI recorded a total of 13 murders across the territory. Club Med Turkoise being sued by murdered woman’s family BY DELANA ISLES THE MURDER of Marie Kuhnla, a Long Island woman found strangled in bushes near Club Med Turkoise in October 2018, is still under active investigation by the Royal TCI Police Force. But, the family of the 61-yearold is not satisfied that enough is being done by the authorities to find her killer. Two weeks ago, NBC News 4 reported that the family filed a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against the resort. In that lawsuit, they fingered a guest of the Club Med resort at which Kuhnla was staying during her vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Kuhnla was travelling with two colleagues from the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County, where she worked in the Family Court division. Frank Yacullo, a former employee of Club Med, is accused in the suit of allegedly sexually assaulting one of Kuhnla’s friends who was vacationing with her. The court papers then accuse Yacullo of killing Kuhnla, as he was the last person to see her alive on October 15, and Club Med of covering up the crime.
The court filing reads: “After Marie’s death, Yacullo was arrested and detained by Turks and Caicos police for the sexual assault on Helma, but was released within 24 hours. “Before he could face justice for Marie’s murder, Yacullo quickly fled to the United States to his Long Island home in Nassau County.” Kuhnla’s friends told NBC that they became increasingly concerned when Marie disappeared after a day of drinking at the pool, yet Club Med staff and local police seemed unconcerned when they tried to report her missing. The son and husband of Kuhnla filed the lawsuit after hiring private investigator Eddie Dowd to look into the death. He told NBC that it did not appear that Kuhnla had walked to the location where her body was found - it was either dumped there after she had been killed or she was killed among the bushes where her body was found. Husband Rick Kuhnla told NBC that it does not appear that anyone is taking the investigation very seriously, or were doing much to find his wife’s killer. “They just wanted to sweep it under the rug. It’s the easiest way

to answer that,” he said. The couple’s son, Rick Kuhnla Junior, said the family wants justice for his mum and to know what happened. The family’s attorney Abe George told NBC: “Club Med failed to take the requisite action to keep Marie safe.” He insists that the crime was an act of murder. Yacullo reportedly also told
NBC that he had nothing to do with the crime and had no interaction with the woman away from the pool. A spokesperson for Club Med told the Weekly News that they could not comment on “ongoing litigation”, but added that “the safety and security of all of our guests and staff is our highest priority”. In a December 2018 statement,

the Royal TCI Police Force described the murder as “a complex case” and said officers were exploring a number of lines of enquiry. “We will utilise all available means including sophisticated forensic science in our efforts,” they added. The force has not release any information on the investigation since then.

Improvements promised after serious assaults on prison staff A STRING of measures to protect prison staff have been promised following two serious assaults at Her Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk this June. Riot gear, public order training, cell phone blocking equipment and group insurance, along with a full review of the prison system are all in the pipeline, the Government has said. On June 3, an inmate wielding a plank of wood knocked a prison officer unconscious in an incident that was caught on camera and widely circulated on social media. And on June 5 a prisoner threw items through the glass window of Prison Superintendent Grahame Hawkings’ office causing him to sustain a minor cut to his forehead. A Government statement on Saturday (June 6) said the prison team spoke to Deputy Governor Anya Williams just a day before the second incident. Along with management from the Ministry of Home Affairs which has responsibility for the prison they discussed their safety

issues and concerns. Williams told the prison team that protective gear has been ordered for officers and additional riot equipment has been sourced and is expected to arrive shortly. The UK Security Assistance Team will deliver public order training this week, she added, which will further help to develop skills among prison officers. In addition, group insurance will also be purchased for the coverage of incidents involving
prison officers who are injured in the line of duty. Minister with responsibility for the prison, Hon. Goldray Ewing, said: “We have many brave and caring prison officers, and we recognise and appreciate their hard work on behalf of our society. “As a Government we stand firm in partnership with them and will continue to invest in and support the improvements at the prison, for the safety of all.” The two recent incidents, while
unrelated, were both symptoms of wider issues that the strategic planning group for the prison is working on, the statement said. This group is headed by management of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Her Majesty’s Prison and the Royal TCI Police Force. It will recommend to the Cabinet a full review of the prison to identify opportunities for improvement in the operations, skills and training for staff and
infrastructure. The group will also deliver essential training and skills development to prison staff and will undertake a review of the Prisons Ordinance to allow for more effective incident response. An experienced training manager from the UK will arrive when international borders open at the end of July and will train a small additional prison officer tactical team. A maximum-security wing is under construction now with projected completion within the year, as well as the additional fencing and lighting, the statement added. A contract for cell phone blocking equipment has been signed and installation is due to begin in coming weeks. “The ministry and management of the prison are confident that these measure, along with other key initiatives, will help to improve the overall security of the prison and the skills and confidence of the staff,” the statement said.
TCI Regiment gets its first commanding officer LIEUTENANT Colonel Ennis Grant has been appointed as the first commanding officer of the TCI Regiment. The veteran police officer and TC Islander has already started in the new role and is working with, and being mentored by, the UK military. “We were fortunate to have had such a wellqualified candidate apply,” a press release from the Office of the Governor said on Thursday (June 11). Grant currently commands the Maritime Branch of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police and the Cadet Force, and has links with the US Coast Guard and UK military. He will spend the first year of his appointment on secondment from the force. In the coming months as
the TCI Regiment forms, Grant will develop relationships with his counterparts in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The regiment will have two primary roles. The first is to be in direct support of the Maritime Police, in a role very similar to that being conducted by the Royal Marines during this period. And also, to provide a contingent force capable of preparing and supporting the Islands at time of a natural or other disaster. “Beyond those operational roles the regiment, its ethos and its character, will develop into a proud symbol of the Turks and Caicos Islands,” the release said. “Lt Col Grant - as its first commanding officer - will set the tone of this early and important period in the regiment’s formation.” Positions for the five further
permanent staff who will join Grant in setting up the regiment will now be advertised. Some of these posts will involve training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst starting in September. The 40 reserve (part-time) posts - the non-commissioned officers and marines - of the regiment, will be recruited later in the year. Shortlisted candidates will be assessed over several days drawing on the methodology used by the UK’s Army Officer Selection Board. This includes physical assessment, written communication, led and leaderless command tasks, interviews and the ability to plan and conduct a detailed appreciation of a complex task. “Candidates should expect to be under some physical and mental pressure throughout. We hope the best in TCI will apply,”
Lieutenant Colonel Ennis Grant is the first commanding officer of the TCI Regiment
the Office of the Governor said. “We are looking for leadership potential that can be developed, so no one should be discouraged from putting their name forward for lack of experience. Training will be
excellent.” The selection process will be overseen by the new commanding officer of the TCI Regiment and UK military staff who have, themselves, been instructors at Sandhurst.

TCI citizens return home from Europe
MORE than 100 TC Islanders came back to the territory this week from the United Kingdom and Italy, while several Bahamians returned home. A British Airways flight safely transported 114 citizens from London on Thursday (June 11). The return route was organised through a partnership with the TCI Government, the Governor’s Office and the Cayman Islands government. The Government secured seats for residents and covered travel costs for students under a full scholarship, partial scholarship or grant who wished to return home. Meanwhile, Bahamians who were able to secure seats were transported by a special Bahamasair flight back to Nassau, Bahamas. Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson thanked the partners and welcomed the TCI residents home. Minister of Tourism Ralph Higgs, speaking on June 1, said that Cabinet on May 15 gave consent to allow for the borders to be opened to allow citizens to return home. “To date we have seen the return of persons from the Dominican Republic and some recently trained police officers from Barbados,” he said. “Plans will continue over the next few weeks to bring more Turks and Caicos Islanders home from the South Florida area and in conjunction with other countries in the region, trans-Atlantic flight for persons in those areas. “Our repatriation efforts will follow the stated regulations and are being planned closely with the Ministry of Health.” He said efforts to bring resident home are “not without difficulty” as many airports around the world are closed. “Despite the challenges these repatriation efforts are very important and we will see them through and ask for the cooperation of all concerned,” he added. As of May 15, the Emergency Powers (Covid-19) (No. 4) (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 2020 came into operation. They provided for the return of Turks and Caicos Islanders, permanent residents and residence permit holders who are married to TC Islanders by international air travel. Additional flights will be announced to facilitate the return of residents prior to the reopening of the territory’s borders on July 22. Any citizens wishing to return to the TCI can register with the Tourist Board by sending an email to travel@ turksandcaicostourism.com Applicants must provide their name,

number travelling in party, contact information, country of departure and proof of legal status in the TCI. Returning residents should contact the airlines directly to book a seat. Details will be provided via email.
They will be required to complete and submit to the airline a health screening questionnaire for Covid-19 prior to arrival in the Islands. They will be placed under quarantine in a specified place for a period of 14 days
and will be monitored by a health officer for symptoms and signs of Covid-19. And they will be required to sign a quarantine order and to complete other relevant forms as required by the Ministry of Health.
Queen’s birthday celebrations put on hold IT WAS a public holiday on Monday (June 8), held each year to recognise Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday, but there were no celebrations to be seen in the TCI. The Governor’s Office cancelled the Queen’s Birthday Parade held annually at the Parade Grounds in Grand Turk in order to protect public health and
prevent the spread of Covid-19. “As the world continues to grapple with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, now doesn’t feel like time to celebrate,” Governor Nigel Dakin said in a press release on Sunday. “That time of celebration will come again. We must not let up but keep doing what’s necessary to suppress the virus.”
Instead of the parade the governor suggested celebrating the annual event in a “more personal way”. “We can still celebrate Her Majesty’s legacy of service by helping others in our communities,” he said. The statement added that the parade will continue next year once Covid-19 is under control globally.

Ministry of Tourism meets with representatives from the transportation sector
New tourism and hospitality protocols being developed BY OLIVIA ROSE AS THE TCI gears up to welcome back visitors after nearly four months, new protocols are being developed for the tourism and hospitality sector. The Covid-19 pandemic brought global tourism to a standstill and resulted in a closure of the territory’s borders to local and international travel in March. But now, as the Islands are set to open on July 22 the Government has held a series of meetings to develop and finalise new protocols to guide the sector. Over the past few weeks, Minister of Tourism Hon. Ralph Higgs has led discussions and engaged with the health officials and tourism stakeholders to assess proposed measures. On Tuesday (June 9), the Ministry of Tourism held the final round of consultations. On June 1, in a statement Higgs said: “We are eager to welcome visitors back to our shores.” He said his ministry is working feverishly to ensure all necessary measures are implemented to safeguard the well-being of residents and visitors. “In the days and weeks leading up to the re-opening of our borders, the Ministry of Tourism, in close partnership with the Ministry of Health and our key stakeholders within the sector, will be working expeditiously to guarantee the destination’s readiness. “The tourism industry was one of the hardest hit sectors with the closure of borders and curfews over the past few months. “The measures undertaken were necessary to ensure that the Covid-19 virus was contained and that the country, guided by the Ministry of Health, could establish processes and procedures for health, safety and security once our borders re-open to international travel.”
He said that the new protocols, which will be announced to the public at a later date, are based on regional and worldwide benchmarks. Higgs stressed that ensuring the health and welfare of industry workers, residents and guests is paramount. “The Ministry of Tourism’s key objective is to assure potential visitors that we are taking all the necessary actions to prioritise their safety and the safety of those who will serve our visitors at our
world class hotels, villas, restaurants, airports and taxi services. “We will continue to work with our stakeholders from the various sectors, such as tour operators, accommodation, transportation, etc. to ensure compliance with any and all measures designed by the Ministry of Health to minimise the risk of transmission as much as possible. “This careful planning will put Turks and Caicos at the top of the competitive ladder, as visitors will recognise that we
put their safety first. “I am looking forward to the reopening of our borders in a way that will safeguard the health and safety of all and ensure that TCI remains ‘Beautiful by Nature’ and as safe as possible from Covid-19.” The Office of the Premier said consultative meetings began earlier this month with the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) and the transportation sector.
Retooling our citizens in crisis JULY 22 is the announced date for the reopening of our international borders and with it the reopening of the remaining businesses that were closed due to our response to the Covid-19 pandemic. We in the Turks and Caicos Islands have a unique opportunity to retool entire sections of industries over the next five weeks, but we must do so quickly. Through the Ministry of Border Control and spearheaded by the Labour Department, with support from the Office of Public Service Management and in partnership with the private sector, programmes can be designed and executed to retool or enhance the skill set of every Turks and Caicos Islander whom is willing to participate. We have both TCI Community College campuses, Grand Turk and
BY JAMELL ROBINSON
Providenciales, along with numerous empty hotels with conference room facilities that can be used simultaneously to provide enough social distancing to execute any programme. At present, all returning Beaches TCI
staffers will undergo two weeks training ahead of the reopening of our borders. Why can’t such a similar training programme be offered to other hospitality workers? More importantly, training can be carried out for any sector that is desirous to get people back to work. The target groups should be the unemployed, under-employed (ie. those who might be outside of their area of qualification), persons interested in improving their overall skill set, and especially persons who are on company succession plans. While it might be late in the game, it is never too late to make a difference. Therefore, we must seize the opportunity to position Turks and Caicos Islanders as the preferred employee of choice coming out of this pandemic.

Ignite a spirit of national pride and peaceful revolution THE RACIAL, inhumane and prejudicial attack against George Floyd in the USA which resulted in his tragic and fatal demise has sparked an international spirit of political, ethnic and social consciousness. This in turn has triggered an exuberant determination to retaliate and eliminate the cursed, racial and prejudicial hatred against people of colour in the United States of America and indeed globally. There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this brazen display of police brutality against blacks in the USA has highlighted the vast vacuum in cultural, ethnic and race consciousness that exists in the TCI as it relates to the global African diaspora. We appear to be totally divorced and disconnected from this sort of global social pandemic that is not only on our doorstep in disguised and milder forms but sometimes in our living rooms and are even sometimes prevalent within the ranks of our very government. Unfortunately and shamefully, we are undoubtedly guilty of diaspora distancing which is obviously not conducive to global healing, advancement and empowerment within the global African diaspora and within the global sphere of all people of colour. We as a TCI people have lost the consciousness that was sparked, inflamed and inspired by the late great Most Excellent Right Honourable, James Alexander George Smith McCartney, the
BY OSWALD SKIPPINGS TCI’s first chief minister and first and only national hero, and by the revolutionaries that he led. We have lost the zeal and fervour to be free and equally important, we have lost the desire and will to be freedom fighters and rather have shamefully become satisfied with being relegated to subservient, apathetic victims of social, economic, political and racial abuse and injustices as well as oppression and suppression. We have been infected nationally with a contagious virus of apathy and complacency which has catapulted us into a national epidemic state of docile subservience and elaborate sponsors and participants of pity parties on social media. In fact, we have retrogressed to the point where discrimination and other atrocities that we were once afflicted with by the
British administrators, commissioners and governors, are now being perpetrated by our very own indigenous people that we have voted for in the hopes of bringing steady progress. As a consequence of our blind, subjective and traditional voting habits, we have paid the costly price and have been sold out and mama guyed in too many instances over recent years. The nonchalant, autocratic, nonconscious, political self-interest approach that is being perpetuated by political leadership in our ‘beautiful by nature’ Turks and Caicos Islands in this 21st century era, has become overbearing and oppressive. This is to the point where many justifiably feel the ineluctable need for the rekindling of the revolutionary fervour that has effected the appreciable social, economic and political advancement that we were once experiencing when the flames of the McCartney passion for people and country still burned feverishly within the hearts and minds of sufficient wellmeaning governing officials. It is disgraceful to say the least and it is in fact an indictment on those whom we have put our trust in to lead us onward and forward into progress, that they have drastically failed to even rid us of a draconian, oppressive colonial constitution and secure us a modern democratic constitution that empowers us as a people to chart and navigate our own
course forward. Their failure is too glaring and is chronic. For they have been politically impotent even to the extent of us not being able to independently decide how to spend our own monies, place our people in top jobs, give them reasonable access to their own land, or empower our own Turks and Caicos Islanders in their own country. The dedicated will and resolve seem to be simply non-existent among our recent leadership. We have seen in recent years where we have been socially, politically and economically raped and ravished as a people and sadly enough, we have been too comfortable enduring our oppression and embracing our oppressors. This mistake however, has proven to be to our own detriment while our leaders prosper and splurge on the spoils of the land in extravagant, self-aggrandizing and luxurious ways. My suffering and marginalised TCI people, we need to wake up, ignite and invigorate a new rebellious and progressive spirit of national pride, patriotism and peaceful revolution before we are totally reduced to social and economic peons and no class citizens in our own country. We have embraced and exhibited this debilitating and impotent spirit of procrastination and surrender for far too long now. Time is no longer on our side so now is the time. So please help us Lord our people can take no more. Enough is enough!
Gun violence: Let’s have a conversation Dear Editor, The topic of gun violence is a prevalent one in communities throughout this country. As the discourse continues, there are many questions about authentic and sustainable solutions that can work to reduce the rate of activities among youths related to the use of guns. There may be the thinking among young people that owning a gun gives them control of their security. There may also exist the saying ‘an eye for an eye’ based on the number of incidents in recent times stemming from gun violence. As we ponder on the two schools of
thought, what is certain is that each person reading this article has an opportunity to help stop gun violence. Curbing and possibly eliminating the number of persons impacted by gun violence may come through education. Social media is one of the avenues to get the discussion going on how gun violence affects lives. With the influx of more users on social media platforms due to Covid-19, it is also time to let our voices echo through on strategies that will help to achieve the goal of a safe and violence-free Turks and Caicos Islands. It is time to start the conversation that gun violence is affecting all of us.
While I do not wish to highlight our young men or appear biased, I am concerned with the number of young men who were shot or killed due to gun violence amidst the social distancing and lockdown curfews. In my mind, this indicates that there is a need for more in-depth conversations at all echelons of society. We need to communicate and build relationships with our young people. These are fundamental concepts if we are going to influence them to change their mind-sets. Some past hurts and grudges are unresolved, and those affected have not addressed their challenges.
Let us use our civic organisations to empower our young people through education and provide the catalysis for them to work on building relationships and healing old wounds. We must seek to provide opportunities through our civic groups where our youths can model and promote positive behaviour. Let’s take the conversation on a national level that gun violence is not the answer. Let us seek to find the answers by listening to the voices of those who are affected, our youths. A crisis within a crisis George Floyd’s death and the changing political landscape
AS THE coronavirus pandemic passed 100,000 deaths, this tumultuous era in America ushered in yet another crisis. The tragic passing of George Floyd crept upon Americans and sparked outrage in violent protests. Indeed, these latest episodes of social unrest were inevitable, unravelling the judiciary threshold at a pace not seen before. Undeniably, the current phenomenon is a ‘black and white’ issue, which conceptualised a twofold rationality. First, is the political viewpoint. Dating back, systemic racism was expressed in the practice of social and political institutions across America. From wealth inequalities, employment, education, political power and criminal justice. Today, the most glaring remnants are the continuous killings of blacks by white police officers. From the inception, black people have demanded justice in hate crimes without ceasing and have seen no change. Before Floyd’s death, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick protested police brutality and social injustices toward

blacks. His demonstrations were met with fierce pushbacks from president Donald Trump, the GOP, white supremacists, conservative groups and the media, and in the interim, Kaepernick lost his job. In fact, president Trump touted violence, expressing racial sentiments referring to Kaepernick and other kneelers as “unpatriotic” and “SOBs”. Meanwhile, blacks continue to fall victims of police brutality and in the absence of justice, George Floyd’s death was the breaking point. They’ve taken matters into their own hands and although many black leaders throughout the US have condemned the violent protests, it seems, the peaceful disquiet is working.
To date, the culprits were charged for murder. The lesson here is inequity. Colin Kaepernick cannot kneel in protest of the national anthem for equality, but a white policeman can kneel into the death of a black man. Still, Donald Trump demonstrated no sense of remorse or leadership. Instead, he evoked an infamous racial slur, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts,” igniting more tensions. Then he invoked the Insurrection Act, sanctioning the National Guard and Secret Service to counter protesters. In another light, this saga has a biblical connotation and can be likened to the ‘oppressed Israelites’ in Egypt, found in the book of Exodus chapter one.
The Israelites were exceedingly fruitful and multiplied in numbers and the king of Egypt was fearful that they would became a force to reckoned with and feared the worst if a war started. Henceforth, Pharaoh ordered cruel enslavement and decreed that all sons be killed and later be thrown into the Nile river. Despite these oppressions God allowed the Israelites to grow in number and power. In the same way, white supremacists in America feel threatened and are demonstrating Pharaoh-like sentiments. Blacks were brought to America solely as slaves. In retrospect, the white supremacist leaders created an ‘injustice’ system to oppress them, yet, they are increasing in numbers and rising to the occasion. Having said that another lesson is found in Act 17: 25 and 26 – confirmed that ‘all men are created equal. In fact, the 14th amendment of the US Constitution in 1868 bears the concept of equality. Until white supremacists acknowledge this fact, black people will forever be demonised.
Patriotism over politics Dear Editor, I would first and foremost like to express profound gratitude for the outpouring of support following my recent social media post. The purpose and content of the video was to vocalise both grievances and support of a fellow local businessman at this time. It is worth noting that the said video was viewed more times than our entire TCI voting population. We have become accustomed to sweeping our issues and injustices under the rug, afraid of speaking out to avoid being victimised by political henchmen, our own families, cyberbullies, and the Government. But enough is enough. Those numbers, coupled with the support received, is evidence that our community has recognised the urgency of standing up for what is right - patriotism over politics. At this time, we must become strategic and radical (if necessary) in our thoughts
and actions. Our Islands and the progress of this nation is in our hands. The future and the foundation we lay for our forthcoming generation is in our hands. We have suffered under administrations that have sold us fool’s gold. However, I believe there are persons among us, filled with passion and hope, who will do whatever it takes to move our nation to the next level. As a businessman myself, I can confirm that the local business community has been actively assisting our communities both publicly or privately and is still doing so. The notion of wanting businesses to ‘step up’ when they have either been closed or operating at a loss is absurd, unwarranted and uniformed. Now more than ever is the time for our greatest minds to meet and plot the way forward. Conversations and consultations with the business community is the way to
ensure that the best ideas and plans are put forward to avoid further assumptions, frustrations, discord and marginalisation. These consultations should be all encompassing, for example health, agriculture, social development and welfare, tourism, education etc. We are the ones who help support the
majority of families through pay. This is the same money that returns to the economy in order to keep it afloat. Our Government is clearly out of touch with the communities it should be serving. Elery James, Providenciales

Stimulus pay-out delays causes stress among residents BY OLIVIA ROSE HUNDREDS of out of work residents say they are under stress and struggling to make ends meet as they have not received their $1,200 stimulus package pay-out from the Government. The Covid-19 Employee Stimulus Cash Grant Programme was launched to provide financial relief during lockdown for employees in the hospitality and tourism sectors. To date, more than 4,000 workers have received relief payments into their bank accounts – but thousands of others have been rejected or are still awaiting their promised money. Over the past week, many residents took to the popular Facebook page ‘The Original Speak Your Mind TCI’ to bemoan the slothful processing system. Many questioned the reason for the delay while others expressed frustration that friends and family had got their payments quickly while they continued to wait. Deborah Lindsay Saimpha, a Providenciales resident, said: “I along with a number of staff work at the airport and we have not received the package.” Sharana Robinson said: “Home three months now, no job, no stimulus, application declined, no call, zip.” Calixte Carline said: “Still waiting, some of my co-workers say they received it twice.” Tajuana Rasheida Ewing said: “My brother works with a tour operating boat company which is in the tourism industry category and he did not get his money.” Irvin Pascal said his patience is growing thin: “As for me I didn’t receive any money. “Shame on these people, was working so damn hard and I can do with that money but unfortunately nothing was sent to my account.” Jay Recklezz Butterfield said: “I’m just ready to go back to work, waiting on the Government is a waste of time.” Harley B Tucker said: “I think it’s unfair that some fortunate enough to receive it and others that applied are not. “The Government lives like royalty and our people are only getting crumbs or nothing at all. Justice for the people.”
Jenny Johnson Handfield said she made some attempts to contact the team working on the applications but is yet to receive a response. “I’m tired of waiting on compliance.” Debbie Manos said: “Been on declined status and no one followed up. Just the standard denial letter of 1-3 thing yet I met every category.” On the other hand, some residents explained that their applications were approved but no money had been deposited to their accounts. Erna Sintus Colvert said: “Mine said approved but I’m still waiting.” Aveta Abigail Arlene Ashton said: “I didn’t receive anything and mine says approved for weeks now.” Ching Simons said: “I was approved for about a month and they sent me an email last week saying they need proof of NIB contributions.” Fleury Jeff said: “My own going for three weeks showing approved, still ain’t receive nothing.” Some residents have organised a peaceful demonstration slated for Friday (June 12), at Butterfield Square, Downtown, for those who have not received their payments. ADDITIONAL INFO NEEDED
The Weekly News reached out to the Office of the Premier for a response to these latest complaints. In a statement, the Office of the Premier said applicants with outstanding issues should respond to emails requesting additional information by Tuesday, June 16. “Applicants are asked to check emails regularly for a response from the compliance team managing individual folders containing documents that are under review,” the statement read. The Office of the Premier stressed that the compliance team has been working to complete the applicants’ folders to ensure that eligible employees receive their much-needed benefits. “All files are managed electronically and any subsequent submissions made under the unique reference number will be immediately captured in the applicant’s personal folder.
Residents take to Facebook to complain about the slothful stimulus payment system
“There is absolutely no manual handling of personal records. This is why it is important that applicants respond in the email portals provided by the compliance team. “By doing so, the applicant is effectively placing his own records in his own file folder.” Applicants are urged to check the junk and clutter folders of their email, as responses may have been filtered there. “If an applicant’s reference number appears on this list, the deadline to respond is Tuesday, June 16, 2020. “There will be subsequent lists as processing continues, but applicants should adhere to the allocated deadlines for the list on which their names appear.” During her national address on May 20, Premier Sharlene
Cartwright Robinson said scores of applications were submitted by people not employed in the tourism or hospitality sectors. As such those applications were denied. Along with this, the required documents needed for validation purposes were not submitted by some entrants. A significant number of applicants also provided information that was erroneous or incomplete resulting in extensive vetting. She noted that some requirements like identification submitted by some applicants were not valid. Cartwright Robinson said: “In this case, the majority of the applicants stem from conditions of work permit or permanent residence certificate (PRC) where
the right to work requirements were not met. “Or that complete copies of work permit, PRC, residence permit spousal could not be seen. “When an application is sent to compliance, it is done so for one or more of the following reasons: “A copy of one of the required documents have not been submitted or payment of NIB contributions could not be verified by one of various means.” She further explained that in addition to these hiccups encountered, the vetting process revealed that duplications numbered in the thousands. The premier cautioned employees against submitting another application since it will be considered a duplication and be placed at the back of the processing line.

THE SALT CAY NOTE
Standing on the top of a roof Salt Cay’s White House, its roof and a man on a mission A MAN stands on a roof and gazes into the distance. Every so often he takes his eyes off the horizon and inspects the day’s work. It has been a long, hard journey since hurricanes Irma and Maria slammed into Salt Cay in 2017. “This is the third highest point on Salt Cay,” my conversation partner informs me, “in fact when I am up on that roof, I am 51 foot above sea level and can see every island in the Turks Islands, except Penniston Cay.” He goes on to tell me: “This is the first thing you see from the sea, from as far as 10 miles away, and it’s been a navigational reference point for 185 years.” By now the more astute reader will probably have figured out that “this” is not just any old house, but indeed the legendary White House on Salt Cay. The man on the roof is none other than its current occupant, Tim Dunn, descendant of Daniel Harriott (Tim’s great-great-great-grandfather) who built the White House in (circa) 1840. So much has been written about the history of the salt industry generally and specifically the Salt Cay ‘Salt Barons’ that I decided it was best to focus only on the recent, post-hurricane repairs of the TCI’s most famous (and only remaining) Bermuda limestone roof. In order to get my facts straight and grasp the historical context, I asked Tim to join me (socially distanced of course), for a coffee and a chat about Bermuda limestones, Salt Cay’s history and his family. How long could that possibly take? An hour? Try five. This man, of undoubtedly many talents, (among them repairing roofs, diving and seafaring) has a seemingly endless repertoire of island stories and histories which he tells with such boyish enthusiasm that one simply doesn’t have the heart (nor the desire) to discontinue the conversation. So, after a very informative (and entertaining) five hours, which produced far too much information for an 800-word column about a roof, we simply agree to use all the other material for future columns. THE HISTORY At the time of the construction of the White House, the salt industry in the Turks Islands was on a roll. What had begun in 1678 with an annual output of 20,000 bushels of salt had grown to 6.5 million bushels by 1850, half of which came from Salt Cay. This not only made Salt Cay the most prosperous island (per capita) in the archipelago but also the second most populated island with a population of about 900. By comparison, about 50 people lived in Providenciales - at that time commonly referred to as Blue Hills. About 80 percent of this lucrative industry in Salt Cay was controlled by the Harriott family and until the outbreak of World War II, they prospered. With the Second World War came the

beginning of the end of the salt industry in the Turks Islands, for while production didn’t cease completely until the early 1970s, with shipping lanes to the main market, the US, interrupted (during the war) and production moving to new locations (after the war), the gradual demise of the industry in these islands was inevitable. In 1951, as the UK government nationalised the salt industry, Franklyn Harriott (Tim’s granduncle), sold the business for 10 cents on the dollar and left for Canada. The one asset however Franklyn did not sell was the White House (which he felt had been grossly undervalued), instead leasing its lower level salt storage facility back to the newly formed Turks Islands Salt Company (TISCO). Before departing, Franklyn Harriott entrusted a Salt Cay native, Mr Felix ‘Fee’ Lightbourne, to look after the house, which Felix did diligently until his death in 1994, when this role fell to his son-in-law, Lionel Talbot. Between the early 1970s and 1999, various members of the Harriott family lived periodically in the White House and come for extended visits but it wasn’t until Tim Dunn decided to move to the TCI in 1999 that once again a member of the family resided permanently in the White House. In the meantime, while Felix and Lionel had
looked after the house as best they could, some renovations and upgrades had been carried out by the family over the years, namely in the late 1990s and 2003 (this time under Tim’s direction). And then came Ike. “I had left briefly in 2008,” remarks Tim, “and then Ike brought me back.” Hurricane Ike ripped three large holes into the roof, knocked out 10 of the 21 windows and left a total of 300 square foot of roof damage. It took until 2011 for all the repairs to be completed, but in the end it all seemed worth it. “By the winter of 2011 we were in great shape,” notes Tim, “probably the best we’d been in over 60 years.” And then came Irma - and Maria. “Irma changed everything,” says Tim, who between 2011 and 2017 had owned and operated a successful watersports business out of Grand Turk. “And we thought we were ready for it, much more so than we had been ready and prepared for Ike.” As he recounts the experience you can still sense the shock and awe of Irma’s aftermath. “I must confess that I underestimated Irma. We had prepared for a storm like Ike, and we ended up with the strongest storm in 500 years.” This time, the White House is in critical condition, with 1,200 square foot of its 5,000 square foot roof severely damaged. After a few months of digesting the events of September 2017, the family decided in November 2017 to restore the historic landmark and work began that same month. As I sit with Tim, having coffee in May 2020, I can’t help but discern the relief he no doubt feels now that the roof repairs are all but completed. And yes, I could go on for another 500 words about the critical concept of “compressive force” when restoring a historical Bermuda limestone roof, but instead I ask Tim to sum up his personal relationship with this incredibly special building. “This house,” he concludes our conversation, “is why I am here. And every time I have left Salt Cay, for one reason or another, it has always brought me back here. “It is as if my fate and that of this old house are somehow, inextricably linked.”

Outreach Turks and Caicos donates food to residents in need BY OLIVIA ROSE LOCAL charity Outreach Turks and Caicos has delivered much-needed food vouchers, groceries and breakfasts to people across the territory as part of its Covid-19 food campaign. The organisation, which was established to create a home for the aged and homeless, generously put some of its funds towards a more immediate cause over the past few weeks. Founder of the organisation Stephanie Duncanson told the Weekly News that she hoped the donation would help fight the increase in food insecurity brought on by the pandemic. “It is during times like these that we need to work together and support each other, so we decided to feed some people
during this crisis,” she said. Before carrying out the drive, the charity reached out to the Social Welfare Department for a list of the most vulnerable residents across the TCI. “We are aiming to feed approximately 100 people, the majority of them being from communities in Providenciales,” Duncanson said. Members and volunteers have already delivered bags of groceries and hot breakfasts to a number of vulnerable people in Five Cays. They also gave some Providenciales residents IGA food vouchers worth up to $75 while others, including residents in North Caicos and Grand Turk, received food boxes. The boxes include staple food items such as milk, fruits, pasta, tea, chicken,
sugar, cooking oil, tuna and water, to name a few. The charity founder said those who are receiving assistance from the organisation are experiencing a difficult time due to the pandemic which put many people out of work. “One of our members, Hazel Greenwood, suggested that we spend the money we have in our account, and we can always get it back,” she told the Weekly News. “Many of us gave from our own pockets to see the initiative through, and we trust that our small gesture will make a difference in the lives of those affected.” The organisation will continue to feed the needy and plans are in place to start distributing seeds and soil to the public as part of a backyard garden initiative.
“We would like to do this with the help of a nursery, this will help people to grow their own food,” Duncanson said. She appealed to the public to give any amount they can afford to help those in need during this time by sending cash to the Outreach Turks and Caicos bank account: 10557291 - FCIB. Several volunteers gave up their time to assist in the outreach exercise. “On behalf of Outreach Turks and Caicos, thank you to Nay Robinson and Edith Cox they have been of tremendous help in both Middle and North Caicos. “We’re especially grateful to Digicel for donating $500, and trust that companies will continue to give to our cause not just with Covid-19 but continuously. “Thank you to our members, Dr Dawn

Davis: We support worldwide protests over Floyd killing THE Bahamas’ Progressive Liberal Party leader Philip “Brave” Davis said that his party stands in solidarity with the protests across the world over the killing of George Floyd, the African American who died while being detained by police officers in Minnesota. Videos of Floyd’s death made its rounds on social media, showing a white police officer kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes while other officers knelt on his back. Mr Floyd repeatedly gasped “I can’t breathe” before he died The incident has since sparked public outrage and protests nationwide in the US and elsewhere in recent days, with reignited calls for justice against police brutality and an end to racial discrimination. Calling the protests a recognition that police violence against African Americans is “rarely prosecuted”, Mr Davis pledged the PLP’s support against police brutality and injustice against black people. Local activists have said while Bahamians are rightly outraged over Mr Floyd’s killing, the spotlight must also be shone on the Bahamas’ issues with police brutality and excessive force. Speaking during his monthly press conference at the PLP headquarters, Mr Davis said: “Many Bahamian families have a son, or daughter or nephew or cousin or grandchild who study or work in the United States. We stand in solidarity with the peaceful protestors. “We understand how high the stakes are. We know the costs of systematic racism, the costs of justices postponed. It is not just policing that needs reform. Racial inequality remains widespread in housing, employment and education.” Mr Davis continued: “This is true here at home as well. The wealthy and wellconnected have been able to weather the storm with their lives mostly untouched. This is not the case for the large majority of Bahamian families, however - for whom these lockdowns and economic crises are catastrophic.” Mr Davis said if the PLP is elected to office in the upcoming election, the party hopes to bridge the gap of economic inequality. “We intend to through intervention and through our social programmes to reach and ensure that the aspirations of many Bahamians is not stifled in any way,” he told reporters yesterday. “And we hope to be able to bring those who have to understand and appreciate that they have a role to play in ensuring that the common good requires meaning that which is good for them as well requires them to give back and to reach their hands down and pick up their brothers and sisters.” Saying Bahamians have lost confidence in the Minnis administration, Mr Davis also called for the government to be more transparent with the Bahamian people concerning the future of the country in the
aftermath of COVID-19. “The Bahamas is reeling from the impact of COVID-19, but the government continues with its ad hoc, imbalanced and scattered approach to the re-opening of our economy,” he said. “…The number of cases continues to rise in 20 US states. This is before the
projected increase from the protests, the size which we will not know for several weeks. What the Minister of Tourism and the Prime Minister owe the Bahamian people right now is honesty about the challenge before us.” He added: “It may be true we cannot afford to wait for a vaccine to open our
borders. But it may be that in order to protect Bahamians, we need a faster, more reliable way to test people seeking in.” During a recent press conference, Mr Davis also responded to Finance Minister Peter Turnquest’s recent comments about the government’s rental assistance programme.

Alvin Hegner RESORT MANAGER
Wymara Resort and Villas is pleased to announce Alvin Hegner as our new Resort Manager. Alvin joined the team in 2019 as Director of Engineering and Security, coming from a proven career where he had worked his way up to Vice President of a Fortune 500 Company in the U.S. As an executive, Vice President in technical operations and President of Global Services, he led thousands of employees worldwide. Alvin was extremely successful in operations, strategic innovation, and made positive impacts to inclusion and diversity. We are thrilled that he decided to bring this talent back home to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Alvin originates from Turks and Caicos Islands, the community of Kew, North Caicos. He moved back to the Turks and Caicos Islands early in 2019 after living in Europe, the United States and working throughout Asia. Since moving back, he worked in the hospitality industry as a consultant. Alvin then sought out Wymara Resort and Villas to further build on his career, identifying the need and want to give back to his fellow Turks Islanders by providing comprehensive leadership, training, and opportunities for all. We are excited that he is back in the Turks and Caicos Islands and that he ultimately decided to join Wymara on a full-time basis.
Genomics UK consortium (CogUK), completely quashes the idea that a single “patient zero” started the whole UK outbreak. The analysis also finds China, where the pandemic started, had a negligible impact on cases in the UK. Instead those initial cases came mostly from European countries. The researchers analysed the genetic code of viral samples taken from more than 20,000 people infected with coronavirus in the UK. Then, like a gigantic version of a paternity test, the geneticists attempted to piece together the virus’s massive family tree. This was combined with data on international travel to get to the origins of the UK epidemic. They found the UK’s coronavirus epidemic did not have one origin - but at least 1,356 origins. On each of those occasions somebody brought the infection into the UK from abroad and the virus began to spread as a result. “The surprising and exciting conclusion is that we found the UK epidemic has resulted from a very large number of separate importations,” said Prof Nick Loman, from Cog-UK and the University of Birmingham. “It wasn’t a patient zero,” he added. The study showed that less than 0.1% of those imported cases came directly from China. Instead the UK’s coronavirus epidemic was largely initiated by travel from Italy in late February, Spain in earlyto-mid-March and then France in mid-to-late-March. “The big surprise for us was how fluid the process was, the rate of and source of virus introduction shifted rapidly over
the course of only a few weeks,” said Prof Oliver Pybus, from the University of Oxford. “This happened later than perhaps we would have expected,” added Prof Loman. The study estimates 80% of those initial cases arrived in the country between 28 Feb and 29 March - the time the UK was debating whether to lockdown. After this point, the number of new imported cases diminished rapidly. The earliest one could be traced back to the beginning of February, but it is possible there were cases even earlier that could not be picked up by the analysis. The study also says the controversial football match between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, on 11 March, probably had very little impact on bringing the virus into the country. An estimated 3,000 fans flew in from Spain to watch the game, but there were 20,000 people flying in from Spain every single day in mid-March. “[It] shows that individual events such as football matches likely made a negligible contribution to the number of imports at that time,” the study says. The imported cases each started off a chain of transmission where the virus is passed from one person, to the next, to the next and so on. However, the study shows lockdown has massively disrupted the spread of the virus. “If there’s good news here, these chains of transmission were and are being suppressed and going extinct as a result of social distancing and we continue to see that now,” Prof Loman said. (BBC)
While this announcement comes at a time where we are facing the biggest impact to the hospitality industry in our existence. Alvin has risen to the challenge and played an influential role in managing both Wymara’s assets and resources during this crisis. He worked closely with ownership in laying out our strategic direction and building business continuity plans to lead Wymara forward. With considerable experience in customer service and operations, Alvin will support our General Manager Jorge Collazo, and lead the operations at Wymara Resort and Villas with our 170 employees. He is highly capable in guiding our human capital strategy as we take the next steps in making Wymara a great place to work. Alvin will inspire the operational team while implementing processes and business strategy across various departments. The initial cases came mostly from European countries.

Trump threatens to ‘take back’ Seattle protest zone US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has threatened to “take back” a police-free district where protesters have been given free rein in Seattle. Police abandoned a precinct in the city on Monday after days of violent confrontation with demonstrators. Mr Trump said the area had been overtaken by “Domestic Terrorists”, but Washington state leaders told him not to meddle in their affairs. Since police withdrew, demonstrations in the area have been largely peaceful. It has been called Chaz, an abbreviation of Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone. Hundreds of people have been gathering there to demonstrate, hear speeches and attend events. The protests in Seattle, Washington began in response to last month’s death in police custody of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. President Trump, who has pushed states to take firm action against protesters, has meanwhile outlined proposals for reforming police, including greater funding for training and national guidelines on the use of force. However, he dismissed calls for defunding the police as an “extreme agenda”. Such a measure involves budgets being allocated directly to communities rather than law enforcement. The area around East Precinct in Seattle became a battleground between protesters and police in the past two weeks, leading the governor to send in the National Guard and for the mayor to impose a curfew. During the violence, demonstrators threw petrol bombs and other missiles at police, cars were torched and looting broke out, according to local media. At the weekend, Seattle police used tear gas and flash bangs to disperse protesters. Members of the city council rebuked the police department, accusing them of heavy-handed tactics. Then on Monday, the mayor ordered barricades removed near the precinct and the police building was boarded up. Since then protesters have taken over a zone spanning about six blocks of Capitol Hill, a hub of the city’s trendy arts scene that has been gentrified in recent years as tech workers drive up
property prices. Local media describe a festivallike atmosphere, with poetry readings, music and movie nights.
Free fizzy water, snacks, sunscreen and hand sanitiser are available. While the protesters say they are leaderless, armed volunteers have
been spotted at checkpoints asking for the ID of people entering. In a series of tweets, the Republican president lashed out
at liberal Democratic leaders in the north-western US state of Washington and its most populous city of Seattle.

TURKS AND CAICOS WEEKLY NEWS
The former national athlete had suffered a broken arm and a broken jaw.
Deangelo Germain has recovered nicely since the accident.
Germain “recovering well” after car accident FORMER national athlete Deangelo Germain is back on his feet after recovering from most of the injuries he sustained during an automobile accident on April 14. After a lengthy stay at the hospital, the dental hygienist is now back home. “So far I am recovering pretty well,” the 26-year-old stated in an invited comment this week. Germain who faced isolation, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was in immense pain after he had completed two surgeries in the latter part of April.
When he had spoken to the Weekly News, he noted that the pain he was feeling was so intense that he would not wish it upon his worst enemy. The former Munro College athlete, who represented TCI with distinction in his primary and high school years, had suffered a broken arm and a broken jaw, after he was struck down while exercising on Butterfield Drive. The bone in his right arm had pierced through his skin, so he was rushed to surgery when he arrived at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre. To
fix the problem doctors implanted a metal rod. He also completed a surgery to the mouth, which had left him with temporary speaking problems. Throughout his time in the hospital, Germain had praised the doctors and nurses and they did not disappoint, since his jaw, which he claimed was “broken up”, and had nine screws, has almost healed. He is now left to fix his two front teeth, which were cracked. Despite the recoveries, the former
400M and 800M specialist noted that there are still both physical and mental hurdles to cross. “At first I was feeling self-conscious about my face, especially with my teeth but I am trying to get used to it…. Physically, I am not 100%, because there are still some things I can’t do and it has affected me mentally but I trying to cope with it.” Along with his teeth, Germain still has to look after his hand, which he hopes can recover quickly enough for him to return to work.
No masks and no ball boys - Premier League return plans revealed PLAYERS and coaching staff will not be required to wear masks at stadiums when the Premier League restarts. Players will be encouraged not to spit or clear their noses and not to break social distancing during goal celebrations. There will be no ball boys or girls - a system of sterilised replacement balls will be used. Aston Villa v Sheffield United will be the first game when the league returns on
17 June. In Germany's Bundesliga players and staff have been required to wear masks at all times, except for during play. In the Premier League they will not have to wear masks at all, even in the changing room or on the bench, although the fourth official as well as doctors and physios will have to. On Thursday the Premier League announced there will be a minute's silence to remember those who have died with
coronavirus before the first matches. Heart-shaped badges in tribute to frontline NHS staff will also be worn on kits. Clubs agreed to a range of medical and operational protocols for the restart of the season at a meeting on Thursday. There will be strict limits on those allowed into stadiums on matchdays and grounds will be split into zones, including the tunnel and pitchside. In total only 300 people will be in each
stadium, with no more than 110 in the 'red zone' including players, club staff and officials. There will be deep cleaning of corner flags, goalposts, substitution boards and match balls before and after each fixture. Some extra disinfection, such as of the substitution board after it is used, is likely to take place during matches and at half-time, while other work will be carried out during drinks breaks if they are permitted by the league.

Steve Kendrew (extreme right kneeling) enjoyed the game as a player and then as a player/administrator. Two years ago, he played his last season with the Sharks.
Steve Kendrew took over from Stephen Wilson in 2011.
Kendrew steps down after nine-year reign as PPL president – Cites personal reasons for decision THE Provo Premier League (PPL) will commence its next chapter later this year without long-standing president Steve Kendrew. The charismatic official decided to step down this week after nine years of service. Citing personal reasons (need for more family time, work time and personal time) for his departure, the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) Executive Committee member responsible for men’s football, noted that he is confident that the league would continue to grow. “Although it’s sad to step down, I will still be a fan and on the TCIFA ExCo overseeing the progress of the league, but it’s a big, time-consuming job and I hope it is given sufficient resource to operate well. I’m sure my committed Competitions Committee colleagues including Andrew Edwards, Hortnel Johnson, Tamara Hall, Sabuton John and Marvette Darien and whoever my successor is, will continue to grow and improve the PPL further.” Kendrew, who has been on island since 2008, noted that he enjoyed transitioning from a player to a player/administrator. “I was playing for SWA Sharks when I arrived on island in 2008 and so it was a pleasure to get involved in the administration side also later on.” In March of 2011, after five years as Men’s Football League (MFL) president, Stephen Wilson handed over the reins to Kendrew. Over the next two years, the senior valuation surveyor was able to
Steve Kendrew says he would now focus a lot of his time and energy on his four-year-old son Louis.
acquire the services of WIV as the title sponsors while he grew the league in terms of players and teams. During this time, he also changed its name to the Provo Premier League. Over the years, numerous national players were able to get much need playing time in the PPL, including the likes of Marco Fenelus. Kendrew said that a number of players who defined what football was on the island inspired him and they became friends. “Over that time, I have gotten to know many local and ex-pat players, many of them super-talented players including the
following that stand out: Many of the national team but particularly Marco Fenelus, Alex Bryan, Jepthe Francois (Belbwa), Lenford Singh, Junior Paul, Wildens Delva and Fred Dorvil but also Patrick Alouidor, Raymond Burey, Junior Paul, Peterson Pluviose and Elton Charles. Still playing: Brian Gregg, Fritzgerald Norvius, Samuel Nacius, Jeanlis Job, Chris Bryan, Romain Small, Rodne Etienne, Kevern de Bellot and Rodrigo Torres. Going back a bit: Horace James, Richie Lock, James Rene, Lee Coulton, Daz Meehan, Dane Ritchie, Syed Hassan, Steve Thompson, Barrington (Tunk) Somers,
Xavier Arnau Gili and Paul Button. As for talented Coaches, Gary Brough, Gerry Gregg, Dane Ritchie and Oliver Smith all stand out.” The departing PPL head added that Simon Wood, the Sharks’ Chairman and goalkeeper and Vernon Johnson who is in charge of Beaches FC have also been supportive. Kendrew tried to keep the league relevant by adding new layers. He later obtained the services of Digicel and then that of Gilley’s Enterprises, who is the current title sponsor. Overall, the football enthusiast noted that he has always been a fan of the league and enjoyed its growth and development under his watch. “I have enjoyed developing the PPL and am grateful for all who have helped me, including Syed Hassan for designing our great logo, Gilley and Desmond Williams for their sponsorship support and Sonia Fulford for her support generally, not to mention all of the TCIFA staff, including Fritz Elvariste. My fondest memories are mainly Sharks moments… and saving a penalty in a President’s Cup penalty shoot-out was up there. Also, there have been some great games that I have watched that have been too many to mention.” As he bows out, the FA executive member is hoping that more persons can support the league. “The PPL is super entertainment for football fans and it’s a shame more English Premier League football fans that I know here onisland do not come out and support our local league.” Overall, we at the Weekly News join the rest of the football community in thanking Steve for his years of service with the PPL.
