Local pastor and his wife left terrified after a home invasion BY DAISY HANDFIELD A LOCAL pastor and his wife were left terrified after burglars entered their home in Blue Hills on Monday and tied them up, demanding the church’s money. The incident took place at the Baptist parsonage on the Millennium Highway, Providenciales, during wee hours of the morning. According to a police, at around 3:54 am police officials responded to a call to that area after Pastor Goldstone Williams, pastor of Paradise Baptist church in Five Cays, reported that he was awakened by three men, dressed in dark clothing, who kicked in his bedroom door and held him and his wife at gunpoint. The pastor also told police that the men tied his hands behind his back, placed a gun to his head and a knife to his throat and demanded money. The culprits allegedly searched a bedroom and stole a number of electronics, jewellery and their silver Chevrolet Captiva jeep, in which they made their escape. No one was injured and the vehicle was later found abandoned. After hearing about the incident, Premier Rufus Ewing visited the distraught couple then shortly afterwards released a press statement on the incident. It read: “This morning I learnt of the terrible news concerning the aggravated burglary and robbery of the home of one of our most prominent pastors. This has not been the first time that this pastor or other pastors have been robbed, but the frequency and manner in which these incidents are taking place without

any respect for life or God, leaves me with a heavy heart and residents living in fear. “I have visited and spoken with the victims of this most recent crime this morning to show my support and express my outrage. And whilst I take comfort that he is a man of God and all will be well, these kinds of crimes must be dealt with and dealt with harshly. “We live in a small community and the persons who are committing these heinous crimes are known to many of us including the Police, and again I am requesting of all residents to be vigilant and report helpful

information to the police whom I know are working overtime to help rid our streets and communities of the criminal elements.” Premier Ewing said he would work with the judiciary to revise sentencing guidelines to ensured that such criminal acts are be met with the fullest extent of the law. “This Friday is our Day of Thanksgiving. I am calling on the churches of this country to come together in prayer and communion for our community. We shall pray, unify and heal on this day,” Premier Ewing said.

THE ENERGY and Utilities Department is planning to rollout a national audit of petroleum storage and handling facilitates across the TCI as part of a qualitative risk assessment of the sector. In a media release issued Tuesday November 15 which sought to update the public on the department`s work. The Department pointed out that the inspection is intended to identify existing operational and structural gaps and to put in place measures for addressing identified deficiencies. It noted that the legislative framework of the petroleum sector will also be improved to ensure improved oversight and monitoring and compliance with industry standards to ensure enhanced safety for personnel and property. The Energy and Utilities Department has also drafted a policy for the Water and Sewerage Sector to ensure the sustainable management of water resources and better oversight of water and sewerage operators across the TCI. The department is currently in the process of modifying institutional arrangements and the regulatory regime.

The release stated that: “Work related to the reform of the legislative and regulatory framework of the energy sector is ongoing. “This work entails significant and fundamental changes to the electricity sector that will ensure a more balanced and robust framework for the regulation of the energy sector, in particular electricity, thereby ensuring a more sustainable energy future for the TCI.” The department noted that it has also embarked on a robust regime to build upon the electrician licensing regime now in place. To this end the department has begun initial consultations with relevant stakeholders for the establishment of a similar licensing mechanism for solar PV installers, practicing in the TCI. The licensing process will ensure only competent and capable persons are allowed to undertake work in this field to ensure safety to personnel, property and equipment. The Energy and Utilities Department has regulatory responsibilities for the electricity services sector, the petroleum sector; the water and sewerage sectors as well as the regulation of electricians.

OSWALD SKIPPINGS, leader of the self-described Christian political party,PDA, has again called for the Police Commissioner’s dismissal, due to his ungodly beliefs. And because, as he claims, the Commissioner does not allow freedom of religion among his officers. At a press conference on Wednesday (November 23), at the party headquarters on Providenciales, Skippings said that Commissioner James Smith does not allow his officers to pray at meetings (a common occurrence in the TCI), or even in the police buildings. “It doesn’t help that the Commissioner of police is an atheist,” Skippings said. “We are a Christian nation, and as incredible as it sounds, he reportedly does not allow officers to pray during meetings, and he demands that they exit the building if they want to pray. “And it is unfortunate that we

are being ruled and dominated by ungodly people that have opposing spiritual cultures.” The party leader stated that what is even more “intrusive, oppressive and disrespectful” is the fact that there is no longer freedom of religion in the Turks and Caicos Islands. This he blames on “intruders” who he claims are abusing their authority, and who he said are refusing to

recognise the Constitutional rights and freedom of people, while imposing their own beliefs on others. He questioned what is really going on in the country, further appealing to voters to cast their ballot for the PDA, a proud Christian party. The leader also urged voters not to be fooled by the lights and glitter, or the money, as their and their children’s futures are at stake.

A Weekly News column that puts you on the spot for your opinions on the issues of the day

TOO MANY CARS? A letter writer in last week’s paper called for a moratorium on imported cars. He observed that there were so many car lots and people bringing cars into the country to sell that the authorities need to place a limit on vehicle imports. What are your thoughts?

What the heck

Well, while we’re about it why not turn the whole place into one massive car lot. The way things are going here, with crime and no border control, what the heck. How about a few more trucks and bulldozers for good measure. He is of course right. You can envisage the whole Leeward Highway at some point becoming a perpetual traffic jam at this rate and the rest of the Islands a graveyard for discarded vehicles. Not forgetting the fact that at least half of the characters you get on the road have no business being behind the wheel of a vehicle in the first place. The tragedy of the Islands is that they had such huge potential in their original pristine condition, but have been subsequently ruined by greed and shortsighted thinking. It won’t change either. Look at the hinterland around the airport or the shanty towns that have sprung up. Planning and foresight? What a joke. Has it ever occurred to you that there is really no one in charge here. We need someone strong in power with common sense, experience, straight and foresighted with the ability to get things done. Hard to come up with anybody isn’t it! Instead all we get are mindless bureaucrats,

jobsworths at workshops, cronyism, and politicians anxiously building up their air miles or yelling into microphones about what they’re going to do. As for the U.K. end, it’s like something out of an Eagling Studios comedy. Instead of passing silly impractical laws, introduce some sensible restrictions on imported vehicles to avert another catastrophe. Otherwise “Beautiful by Nature” is going to look a bit silly and a misnomer. As another contributor aptly put it the other week “we are going to hell in a basket”!

Cars parked all over the place

Persons importing cars for sale should have both an importers license and a car lot. Cars are now parked all over the island and on other people’s property. Provisions should also be made to have a licensing authority at the dock so that Cars have at least a temporary license before they hit the streets.

More competition

No tight. The only Moratorium we need is size and fuel consumption, More competition.

Hon Sean Astwood to organize another clean-up campaign in Five Cays BY DAISY HANDFIELD A CLEANUP campaign will be held in Five Cays over the weekend, under the guidance of Hon. Sean Astwood, MP for Five Cays and in collaboration with the residents of that constituency. The initiative is scheduled to begin at approximately 7:00 am and the route starting from Rubis gas station on the corner of Five Cays, continuing unto the main roads, leading down to Bugaloos Conch Crawl. Mr Astwood explained in an interview that this clean-up was going to be one of many clean-ups that he has conducted in Five Cays. He said: “This is a process that has to be continued and not just the cleaning aspect of it, but also the changing of peoples’ mind set, to stop littering, stop encouraging

dumpsites, to report to the proper authorities to make sure that their surrounding and the community that they live in stays as pristine clean as it could be. “We are having this clean-up for the simple reason that the streets are dirty. The Government refuses to do its duties and keep the streets clean. I am doing what I have been doing for years. The streets of Five Cays have been dirty for a while and after requesting for it to be done and not getting through, I decide to put a group of people together and do it myself.” Mr Astwood stated that there is still a fair amount of trash around the place, and he believes that a missing element is true enforcement. The MP is inviting residents to join in and lend a helping hand in keeping the communities in the TCI clean.

Just trying to make a living

The people who are selling cars are trying to survive and make a living. There are lots of car lots in every country. In Florida alone there are too many, but customers like being able to choose. There is nothing wrong with the many selling of cars, and a little competition. Unless it is a problem to someone who is selling cars also.

There is nothing wrong with the many selling of cars, and a little competition. Unless it is a problem to someone who are selling cars also Customer’s.

TCI has lost its way

The TCI and in particular Providenciales has lost its way and brand recognition. Our beautiful Island is now like all others - a dirty, polluted place filled with old vehicles which some other country wanted to get rid of. We have become the new grave yard or dumping ground for old vehicles which will be obsolete in about 3 years and what will the government do with them. The Importers are laughing to the bank because they often times creates double invoice to save on duties and no one is checking. Dick, Tom and Harry is selling vehicles using the sides of our roads as car lots and I am sure they do not have licenses. This make us look like all other Caribbean Islands- a junk yard. What is obvious is that we do not have a government which understands our tourist brand and really cares about the need to protect it. This is the reason that we will soon be seeing KFC, Wendys, McDonald, Burger King etc all over our Islands and owned by you know who. Look at another new and annoying practice of certain grocery stores littering the environment by having persons place flyers on the windscreens of parked vehicles. This practice goes unnoticed by the EMS who is seen regularly cleaning up the mess along our streets.

Leave it alone

Leave it the way it is as people are able to get affordable cars to transport themselves around and the roads are not overly crowded. People are also able to import cars directly which is cheaper and more effective than going through dealers. Furthermore rental car companies can bring in used cars at a better rate and this will be reflected in lower rental rates which are loved by our many visiting tourists.

Vex because prices are falling

I guess the writer is a car dealer facing problems because car prices are falling.

Why do these people want to make life more expensive for all of us?

Cars are not the problem, just bad drivers

We do not agree with the letter writer. The problem is not the number of cars it is the poor level of driver skill. Also the problem of reasonable quality repairs. It is very difficult to bring an auto in on your own because of the cost of transportation and duty. The government wants to limit imports to 10 years of age. 2006 and younger cars are very expensive and people can not afford them. The ministers are not sensitive because they have awarded themselves two new big vehicles apiece. Dealers are connected politically as well. That would account for the difficulty in bringing in your own.

Duty on cars is ridiculous

We need to train people to drive and train people to repair. 45 % duty on cars is ridiculous. The ministers don’t care because they decided to give themselves cars brought in by a cronie dealer. The people suffer and the government, this government could care less. From taxes to import costs of cars which gives the dealer importing at wholesale price levels in quantity a huge advantage. They want to be re-elected and listen to the cries of the people.

Put a limit on age of cars

11. Don’t limit the sales, have the same ruling as Bermuda. One car in, one car out. Also, put a limit on the age of the vehicle. No more than 5 years old. Next....improve public transit (busses, not more jitneys) so that people don’t have the same need for a car.

Just be sure the cars are not under 2007

People’s livelihood. Just be sure that the cars are 2007 or later models. The big problem with people at home is TUNNEL VISION OR VISIONLESS. THEY CAN NEVER VOME UP WITH THEIR OWN IDEAS. ONCE SOMEONE COMES UP WITH AN IDEA THE WHOLE COUNTRY TAKES IT AND RUNS!! Turkeys!!!

“TCI Healthcare PPP: ebony or irony?” rebuttal Dear Editor, I read with considerable interest the opinion piece in the Turks & Caicos Sun written by Dr. Darren N. Hall with the rubric “TCI Healthcare PPP: ebony or irony?”. Let me hasten to declare straight away in noting that Dr. Hall is my cousin, whom I have the utmost respect for. Hence, my reason for writing this article is not intended to be confrontational. Rather, I have found Dr. Hall’s piece to be illuminating in many respects, as I do agree with some of his observations. However, I do have reservations concerning a number of his positions and I shall expound on those areas as I proceed. In Dr. Hall’s piece, he questions the wisdom of entering into a PPP for healthcare. He further questions the

spiraling medical cost associated with the PPP mechanism for healthcare delivery and the comparative cost of similar hospitals built in cities such as Lesotho and Valencia. These are the areas that I will focus on in making my contribution. I do so because I do not want to leave it open to speculation as to the reasons why the Government pursued the PPP method when we did. In so doing, I am by no means being critical of Dr. Hall’s views as I accept that he wants nothing but the best healthcare for our people as well. Let me, therefore, take the reason for the Government deciding to use the mechanism of the PPP first. As is readily apparent, building modern day hospital facilities can be prohibitively costly. This is even

the more challenging when you are tasked with having to build two of them. As a country, all of our borrowing for infrastructure projects had to be approved by the UK Government. When the PNP came to Office in 2003 there were competing demands on the country’s financial resources for a myriad infrastructural needs. Our Country’s road system was in shambles; schools needed improvement; government offices were in dire need of repair; sporting facilities were non-existent and basically the Country as a whole was crying out for infrastructural attention generally. Back then the Government’s Treasury was completely depleted of funds causing the previous Government to enter into

MILLS MUSES

Should pastors be involved in politics? In the TCI, this issue gained wings after it became known that a few men of the cloth had expressed interest in becoming involved in formal, active politics. Their official nomination has already taken place, and they have begun to campaign actively. Some are attached to traditional political parties, while others are contesting as independent candidates. Our people are rather religious, and some of us feel that a pastor was called for his or her religious work, and should not be tempted by the pieces of silver which seem to lure many today into running for political office. There are others who say Moses was a political leader, with spiritual functions, and these did not collide. In fact, his spiritual orientation enriched his political efforts to free his people. His spiritual orientation provided the political insights to deal with one of the most powerful political leaders of the time, King Pharaoh, and enhanced his success in liberating his fellow men and women. In fact, it is argued that King David was divinely selected to politically rule his people, and Samuel the prophet was instructed to anoint him. Here, political calling was given

a higher blessing, and adherence to divine instructions brought success. When Jesus said to give to Caesar what was his, and to God the things that are His, there is no contradiction. It meant both activities could be done together, and were not separate or distinct. We exist in a society, where the institutions of government which resulted from political activity, got their legitimacy from the spiritual realm. So politics, or political involvement by the anointed and chosen, is a divinely inspired activity, and means that the chosen, through political activity, can help to release heaven on earth through assisting in transforming the outlook and behavior of the flock manifesting our Creator’s will. When a pastor, or any religious figure by another name, contests political office, it means that they would be able to influence the morals

of the society through their speeches, behavior, and example. They will have a wider audience which makes their spiritual work more meaningful, and helpful to those in need, and others with different needs. They can always access the Great Spirit for further guidance concerning the challenges politics presents, and will be sure to receive the appropriate advice. Spiritual consciousness opens up possibilities we never dreamed of, and results in institutional fairness, trust, and decency in politics. The involvement in politics by pastors, will result in a kinder and gentler society. A more righteous flock, goodness in our interpersonal dealings, and higher aspirations by our people. This stimulates them to be creators of a sustainable and workable economy, and a just society.

negotiations for the sale of Water Cay to augment the Country’s reserves and provide funds to meet recurrent expenditure. We continued the negotiations for the sale of Water Cay and were ultimately able to fund the Treasury’s bank account upon closing on the deal. The United Sates at the time was still in recession which had a knock-on consequence for us. Consequently, we had to explore the various options that were available to us to address our Country’s needs while at the same time staying within the parameters of the Borrowing Guidelines that were prescribed for us by the UK. Decisions had to be made and we decided to use the PPP vehicle to address projects that had a revenue stream as they could be financed off balance sheet and not impact adversely on our Country’s ability to borrow. For those projects such as roads and schools which did not have revenue streams, we borrowed directly for them and they were properly reflected in our Country’s financial statements. It should be noted too that at the time the UK Government was using the PPP model to fund the construction and operation of some of their own hospitals. They in turn encouraged us to go down this path and assisted us with technical expertise in negotiating our arrangement. The process was long and arduous and took all factors into account. I do share Dr. Hall’s view, however, that proper healthcare delivery for a country ought not to have as its driving component a profit making objective. We were able to square our approach in this regard by having the Government implement a national healthcare insurance program which would serve as the mechanism to fund the healthcare needs of our citizens and residents. The profit component that was incorporated in the agreement targeted those patients and services that fell outside of the national healthcare insurance envelope. I can vividly recall that considerable emphases were given to the optimal delivery of primary healthcare as we saw it as being absolutely critical to our Country. Particular attention was paid to the poor and the indigent getting full access to primary care services without being charged. Tourists, cruise ship passengers and persons seeking to do elective procedures at the hospitals would have to pay the full rate for their healthcare needs and this aspect of the service would be profit driven. From this revenue stream, the Government would share in the income 50/50. The proceeds from

this profit center were to then be used to subsidize the medical cost that the Government would have to pay for its citizens. This area of the agreement which deals with the profit driven segment is virtually untapped and needs to be looked into further for proper implementation. If the Government were not able to avail itself of the PPP vehicle, the hospitals would not have been built. If we had chosen to borrow directly for them they would have crowded out the Government’s ability to build roads, classrooms or provide scholarships. That now brings me to the cost associated with the PPP for the hospitals. Dr. Hall is correct that the overall cost for the hospitals is just under US $124 million. He compares this cost, however, with that of the facilities in Lesotho which cost US $120 million and Valencia which cost US $98 million. It ought to be noted though that our cost includes two fully equipped hospitals on two different islands unlike in the case of Lesotho and Valencia where one facility each was built for those respective cities. It should also be observed that unlike in Lesotho, South Africa and Valencia, Spain, we have to import every single thing that is required for the construction and outfitting of these facilities. As a yardstick, in most cases, one should double the cost of what something would cost in an industrialized country where raw materials and cheap labor are usually at your fingertips. On these small island states, such as ours, your most basic need is often in scarce supply. South Africa and Spain have unfettered access to all the types of materials that would have been required for the construction of their facilities. They would have had the advantage to choose less costly options which may not have been available to us in this region. Furthermore, you cannot understate the additional cost that is added on when we have to build to meet very rigorous hurricane code requirements and quality control. And in spite of these inherent advantages for industrialized countries, the Lesotho Government still ended up paying four times as much overall for the new service delivery system for healthcare in comparison to that which they had before. The same cannot be said for the Turks & Caicos Government. In 2009 when the hospitals were under construction, the Government was paying in excess of $20 million on treatment abroad patient care and a further $22 million for primary CONTINUED 

and secondary healthcare delivery through the civil service system. Today, using Dr. Hall’s figure of roughly $50 million (inclusive of the PPP’s unitary and clinical payments) for healthcare delivery within the PPP mechanism and primary care, the increase as a percentage in our overall cost under this structure is rather modest in comparison to Lesotho’s. When you factor into the equation that the GDP for Lesotho is approximately US $1,260 per capita and that of the Turks & Caicos Islands being in excess of US $23,600 per capita, having to pay a paltry $10 to access the system is mere pittance for our people to ante up in comparison to the people of Lesotho. The World Health Organization (WHO) sets as a benchmark for developed countries to allocate a minimum of 18% - 20% of their budget for healthcare. Our annual budget is approximately $250 million. We are spending approximately 20% of our budget on healthcare which puts us in the range specified by WHO. Therefore, it would be dangerous to get bogged down in the minutia of citing statistics, especially for dissimilar territories, as they can convey a misleading narrative if not properly contextualized. For example, when one extrapolates from statistical data the value for money of

9

building a bridge between North and Middle Caicos it cannot be justified. Likewise the same can be said of building high schools, docks and airports on some of our other islands. The social benefits and the desire to keep families together seldom get weighed in these statistical analyses when international studies are done. But for small island states, it is usually the social good that gets factored into most of our decisions for essential services which in turn spawns the building of our Causeway, schools, airports and the like on the lesser inhabited islands. Often in procuring these facilities we have limited financing options at our disposal but as a government you have to perform because our people expect results in these remote areas as well. Let’s now evaluate the number of rooms that these hospitals have. For ease of reference, I will again use the example that Dr. Hall gave of Lesotho. That city has in excess of 2.15 million people. It naturally correlates that they will need far more beds than we do given our population of a meagre 35,000. But then again with hospitals, bedrooms are the most inexpensive component of the facility. The physical plant such as the theaters, equipment, administrative offices and laboratories are by far the more expensive areas of any hospital. I would dare to say that our hospitals’ core physical plant is by far superior

to that of Lesotho’s. Indeed the physical core of our hospitals compares favorably to the best hospitals you will find in America and Europe. Both hospitals in Providenciales and Grand Turk have provisions where more bedrooms can be easily added if needed. And while I am on this topic, the point should not be lost that when these hospitals were being built positive growth was anticipated for the Country for the foreseeable future. The catastrophic events of Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike in 2008 combined with the cataclysmic fallout resulting from the Commission of Inquiry in 2009 were economically devastating for our Country. Therefore, In assessing any country’s healthcare facilities, it would be a mistake to look purely at the financial cost. One has to take into consideration what those facilities deliver, the social benefits of the entity, and the intangibles being contributed to making the country an attractive destination. We pride ourselves on being a high end destination that attracts the wealthy and the elite. Were it not for the modern hospital facilities that we now have, our Country would not have easily gotten the Category One rating for our Providenciales International Airport; and we would not have gotten the BBB+ Country Borrowing rating with Standard and

Poors. There are countless stories of these hospital facilities generating tremendous goodwill for our Country. Many times persons travel here from the UK, Canada and the United States and they are in awe of the modern facilities that we have. Many simply cannot comprehend that we have this caliber of facilities in our Country. I personally have been approached by tourists on a number of occasions with glowing testimonials about our hospitals. Only recently when one tourist asked me who they should write to about the good service she received at the hospital I told her to make a comment on Trip Advisor. Scores of Turks & Caicos Islanders have also had the benefit of getting medical procedures and healthcare treatment done at these very hospitals. Many of the medical procedures now offered would have been inconceivable in our thoughts back in 2003 but are now routinely offered in our Country. I have heard personally many of our people laud the virtues of the staff and the facilities as well. Regrettably, as with any medical facility, there will be those who may have had a bad experience or two. We can only hope that these are kept at a minimum. Unfortunately, the bad experiences are the ones that get the most attention and rightly so when it comes to someone’s health or life. And the Government and PPP provider should make every effort to assuage those concerns and minimize their impact in a timely and responsible manner whenever

they occur. Dr. Hall, in my opinion, has given a compelling account of where he believes there may be deficiencies in the management of the PPP contract. He is absolutely correct when he states that there should be independent monitoring of the PPP by a suitably qualified official. He is also correct when he calls for a Health Regulatory Authority for the proper regulation of healthcare throughout the Country. To my knowledge, provision is made in the PPP contract for both regulatory measures. I believe Dr. Hall would be the perfect candidate to head up such an Authority, but then again I suspect he may have other ambitions in life. In 2033 when the PPP’s agreement expires, both hospitals will revert to the sole ownership of the Government without this Country having to pay another dollar to the PPP provider. It would augur well for both the service provider and the Government to ensure that both parties are satisfying the terms of the agreement so that this arrangement could redound to the maximum benefit for all concerned. Dr. Hall is an invaluable resource and it behooves all stakeholders in this arrangement to consider consulting him on some of the pertinent points he has raised in his article. In doing so, we may yet be able to further improve healthcare service delivery in this Country for those who need it the most. Floyd Hall

COMMENTARY

Breathing, in and out A good working health care system should be the most important TCI organization. Younger voters may not realize this but parents and grandparents lives depend on real health care. As a senior who has experienced good health care I can testify to what works. First you must have a good primary care physician. TCI clinics must be staffed with a doctor, (not just a nurse), who knows his patients and keeps a master record of each patients illnesses, medications, surgeries and prognosis. Records should travel with the patient as he/she visits other doctors. Primary Doctors must be outgoing because human nature keeps us shy of doctors. In TCI we need home visits.

BY DAVID TAPFER

David is a retired mobile hydraulic engineer and business executive. He has been married to Middle Caicos native Yvette Robinson Tapfer for 25 years and has lived in Conch Bar, Middle Caicos, since 2002. David formerly served as branch chairman of the PDM from 2008 to 2011

There must be local seminars to instruct the folks. Serve lunch and draw them in. Maybe Ma will know what’s ailing Pa after she attends the seminar. Our hospitals must have a permanent staff of physicians. Not visiting doctors ! Experts in various illnesses and their treatment. Maternity, childcare and reproductive systems.

Diabetes and high blood pressure are inherited problems easily treated. If ignored they lead to bigger problems, more painful, life threatening, expensive. A doctor able to set broken bones, a surgeon to deal with wounds from bullets, knives and accidents. Digestive system doctors for your throat to your rectum and everything in between.. A urologist is not an

option but a number one need. Prostate issues have taken the lives of numerous TCI men. We need a wide range of specialists. Government needs to reinstate USA hospital referrals fouled up by the PNP Miami Southern Health payment mess and numerous Interhealth Canada regional referrals. We spent 18 million for regional referrals but prior to 2004 we spent 4 million on USA referrals. Primary diagnostic care has broken down and IHC sends patients to the DR for diagnosis ? A Dietitian must circulate among the clinics, giving seminars. Fish and green vegetables are good, too much fat and salt is not. What about disaster health emergencies ? A plane slips off the runway and 80 people or more are injured. Can we handle it ? Do we have a burn unit ? Financial considerations.

According to studies we are paying 10 times what we should. Why ? The entire health system needs serious review. PNP won’t discuss NHIP. It will take government change to enforce an overhaul . As TC Islanders my wife and I have been refused a health card. Yvette is a former TCI clinical nurse born in Middle Caicos, formally trained in Barbados and Nassau, now retired. They will not treat and can not treat my illness. Islanders must use their own funds to access USA care. Is your child, ma or pa next ? Our physician premier sought a hide out in the tourism ministry. Embarrassed he moved to the secret Health Ministry. Something is seriously wrong. Lets all vote for change.

Missick calls on PDM and PDA voters to vote PNP STUMPING under the party 2016 logo “to the next level” Deputy Premier, Akierra Missick held her first official constituency rally last Saturday (November 19). Many people turned out to hear their representative lay out the party plans for the country and that of the Leeward Longbay electoral district 5. A number cultural and musical presentations preceded the stump speech the Deputy Premier during the early evening rally. Thanking the people of her constituency for their support over the years, Missick said she intends to reach each constituent to personally request and thank them for their vote before and again on December 15. Recounting the founding mothers and fathers of the party and the accomplishments thus far, Missick said that from day one the government took steady, strong and steadfast steps to ensure that the country could continuously move up to the next level. “We as a government faced so many obstacles in our early days in office that we eventually became oblivious to our barriers and advanced with a focus only on the goal to bring a better Turks and Caicos and a better life for all. “From the first days in office, the first cabinet meeting and the first steps we knew that if we were to be successful we had to build our people, we had to deliver more and more jobs and we had to create a strong and healthy economy.” She added that they have so far doubled the nation’s investment in education and training and that in the new term, these areas will be increased exponentially. Missick, who holds the portfolio for Education and Youth development, stated that her government is revolutionizing the entire educational system by building 21st century classrooms from Providenciales all the way to Grand Turk. She added: “The opponents of our success can always say this can’t be done – that we cannot afford this massive new investment. “Recently they changed the chant to say that we are spending too much money on building more classrooms. In fact, we have built more classrooms in the last four years than the opposition has built in all their previous years in office.” Pointing to the main Opposition party, the PDM, Missick told her supporters that they deserve an election that is about them, but instead they are presented with one that is about the PDM and their “toxic desire to disrupt the advancements and achievements of this nation”. Disruption of the TCI economy seems to be of major benefit to some people, she said, adding that to achieve this some people are even

Deputy Premier Akierra Missick

willing to lie. “They are lying on our accomplishments and they are lying on our record, they are even recycling tired old lies, forgotten fiction of yesteryear.” The candidate said that she does not need to tell anyone to check her record. “I have represented you with multiple open avenues for access. I was once referred to as the Minister you can always reach, and reach me you did. Some via phone, some via email, some facebook, twitter, instagram and many and I mean many via snapchat.” LEEWARD LONG BAY ACCOMPLISHMENTS Pointing the things her government has been able to achieve these past four years, Missick said that the journey is just beginning. “We have seen the development of an ultramodern secondary school. And I know that the opposition has worked very hard to find something negative to say about that. “We have developed the school and we have already allocated the funding to proceed with phase 3.” She noted that while detractors may find reason to talk, no amount of talk can erase the Long Bay High School from the history of the country. “It is built and it is here for all of us to access and be proud of. “Our Green Community park is progressing and so is our pipe water project for Long Bay.” She stated that during the last 12 months, the water project has meandered through the system and just a little over a month ago the contracts were signed and the payments made. Pointing to the length of time the project has and continues to take before it is realised, Missick said that this is where the need for the next level lies. “No longer can our country wait for a whole year to start small and necessary projects. “No longer should the growth of our nation and the action of our government be stifled and restricted

by slothful processes and paralyzing bureaucracy.” She said that the next level means that the government will be able to act promptly and decisively; that people can get what they need from their government when they need it and that Government systems work for good, for progress and for all. “Our next level is more than street lights; our next level is more than paved roads; our next level is solar powered LED lights and hot mixed asphalt roadways and sidewalks. “Our next level goes beyond the Long Bay High School as you see it but our next level is The Long Bay High School auditorium, Gym, Cafeteria and playground. “Our next level is Long Bay Primary School.” She continued that next level also means an olympic swimming pool, an outdoor skate rink, a green park for Long Bay, more jobs, higher pay, better working conditions, an officer monitored CCTVs, community police, more public/private security partnerships, infrastructural upgrades, and curb appeal enhancements. THE NEXT LEVEL IS ABOUT YOU However, she stated that most important, the next level is all about the people. She promised that the PNP’s next level will will equip people with the necessary support to keep their homes and manage their mortgages. “Our next level will ensure that you have everything required to ensure that your children are educated and that parents can live the dream of seeing their children go places they have never been before unto greater and more spectacular things ever imagined. “Our next level means that every citizen of our constituency, of our community and of our country sees an improvement in their lives and the kind of upward mobility that makes life truly worth living.” Pointing to the PDM election slogan “Enough is Enough”, Missick said that “life is so much more worthwhile when we stop complaining and start acting”. “When we stop bickering and finding faults and move up, move on and move to the next level. “Some argue that the next level may not always be up, that it is all in the mind. If you hear next level and your mind assumes it means decrease, then my friend you may have a self esteem problem.” At every possible opportunity, members of the other side congratulate themselves on four successful years, Missick said, adding that while they are shameless, they must not be blamed for their inability to comprehend the magnitude of CONTINUED 

THE CAPITAL NOTE

Dominoes, devices & back to basics What do two dozen Romanian, Spanish, German and UK cruise ship tourists, sitting at John’s Ocean View Bar on Grand Turk’s West Road, have in common ? No, this is not a trick question nor the opening line to a new joke but rather an observation that illustrates rather well the world we live in. The twenty or so tourists have just left their busy lives and 24/7 entertainment on their BY TITUS DE BOER floating resort behind, they’re Titus de Boer, who originally on a fabulous stretch of beach, moved to the TCI from sipping a cold beer or perhaps Germany in 1989, is a journalist by training and rum punch and what do they currently works as an art do next ? Are they relaxing promoter and consultant in on the beach, perhas going Grand Turk and internationally. for a swim or simply enjoying the moment ? They are not. Instead they fratically huddle around the bar, trying to tap into the (free) Wifi connection. Emails are checked and sent, facebook statuses updated; some attempt to make FaceTime or whatsapp calls. The experience MUST be shared immediately. Real time reigns supreme. All of a sudden a lady takes her grand child by the hand and to the beach. They go for a dip, build a sand castle and just enjoy themselves. And no one takes a picture. A few months ago, I found myself in a local restaurant on Grand Turk with my daughter. A lady tourist walks into the venue, iPad in hand and starts to film the surroundings for a distant family member who she’s having a Skype call with. Her commentary, “and here we have the bar and here is this and this...”, is neither illuminating nor (I think) welcome dinner entertainment and so we try our best not to be part of her little show when suddenly she exclaimes at the top of her voice, “and here we have some rude European tourists who don’t want to be filmed...” Life in the year 2016. No matter where you go, it would seem, one can’t escape reality TV and the “instant gratification crowds” it caters to. And yet, every once in a while, one can still come across the good old fashioned, device free joys in life. Apart from the obvious, which is to go out on a sailboat and simply leave all your devices (worries and stresses) behind on shore, you can also find traditional forms of entertainment just down the road. One such activity is playing dominoes. Here’s a game that’s been played for hundreds of years and yet whether you find yourself in Blue Hills, West Road or the dock on Salt Cay, you won’t have a hard time finding a table around which the game is played, just as enthusiastically as it was 20,40 or even 80 years ago. No need for gadgets here and once you’ve observed the activity for a while (I speak from esperience), you can rest assured that an invitation to join the table will be extended without hesitation. Aside from simply being a lot of fun, I’ve also found that dominoes in the TCI is a multi generational activity. So don’t be surprised if one minute you’re playing against players in their 20’s and the next round, the players are 70 year olds. (Sadly no longer a common sight or experience in most of the “developed world”). This week ended with an experience that sums up uniquely the message this piece is trying to convey. A Saturday morning in the Salt Raker Inn on Grand Turk: A little girl is celebrating her birthday with her family. All of a sudden, Rip Saw legend Zeus interrupts the assembled guests, sitting at their tables having breakfast, explains that it’s the little girls birthday and asks everyone to sing, while he and a fellow musician perform Happy Birthday on just a rip saw and a drum. It was simple, it was spontaneous and most importantly it was fun and a joy to watch. Here’s to living in the moment, for the moment.

Stop fear mongering – PDM Chairman to PNP BY OLIVIA ROSE CHAIRMAN of the People`s Democratic Movement (PDM) Doug Parnell, has urged the ruling party to stop spreading fear and inciting segregation among the populace in an attempt to gain political mileage. Parnell was at the time speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, November 17 at the party`s headquarters. The PDM`s Chairman said: “We`ve noticed that this Government is going around putting fear into the minds of the expatriate voter in the country, by saying if you vote for the PDM the PDM will send you home. He made it clear that the PDM is a party that recognizes the importance of unity. “We are an inclusive party, that’s why the name of our party is the People`s Democratic Movement. He blazed the PNP administration for making the lives of expatriates difficult by imposing exorbitant work permits fees on them. “But it has really been over the last four years of the PNP government that has sought to hunt down and try to make the lives of expatriate people living in this country unbearable.

CHAIRMAN of the People`s Democratic Movement (PDM) Doug Parnell

They`ve increased work permit fees, PRC fees; it has become very difficult for these persons to find a way to live in this country legally, because it’s very expensive. “The cost for the expatriate person, whether you`re from Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, United States – wherever, has gone up considerably under the PNP government. “I recall in 2001, I believe, it was where we had the very same Minister of finance and at the time he was Leader of the Opposition; he tried to shut this country down because the PDM had a small increase in work permit fees.

“So they have increased fees on the very population they claim we`re trying to race out if we get elected. “Our promise to all persons is that we will treat you fairly; we will treat you lawfully and humanely; we are not the party that’s going to go and hunt people down who are here legally, or try to target a certain class of people. “That’s not us and the fearmongering that the PNP is using, especially in the Haitian community, they should put a stop to it.” Parnell called on the population to be wary of those who spread falsehood.

success that her government has accomplished when compared to their continued deceit of Turks and Caicos Islanders. “At every opportunity, there is some form of negativity and discouragement sold as a path to a better TCI, but the truth of the matter is that the opposition’s message is too heavy, the truth is that the cries of wolf is hurting the very back of those who are making the cry and the truth is day by day more and more people are dismissing the complaints and political gimmicks as the useless noise that it is.” She added that this mentality is why many former PDM supporters have gone to the PNP. “They too are tired. And why shouldn’t they be?” She said that there is room for

We are a party of constant positive change. We bring change in each and every election by raising up a new generation of representatives.” Naming her fellow candidates, Missck stated that they all represent fresh ideas and positive change. She cautioned that a careless vote is just too dangerous at this point in the country’s development, adding that the current government represents a continuation of the discipline that has set the TCI on the path to prosperity and will be the foundation for continued progress.

Two Haitian men wanted for the alleged murder of a Dominican man BY DAISY HANDFIELD TWO Haitian men are wanted by the Turks and Caicos Islands police for the alleged robbery and murder of a Dominican man, who was killed in the area of Time Square on Aviation Drive in Providenciales last month. The Police is currently asking the public to be on the lookout for Nicholas Jean Pierre and Johnny Monge, who are allegedly connected to the crime. Both men are believed to be armed and dangerous. If seen, they are not to be approached. Police are

urging informants to contact them immediately. The man known as Ronny Heredia on social media outlets, but identified by Police as Juan Carlos Morla, was killed at a carwash, by armed gunmen on October 7, at 3:30 pm. At the time of the crime, police officials said early indications were that the motive for the shooting was robbery. Juan Carlos Morla was employed by a contracting company, and it is said that it was normal for his employer to pay his workers at the Downtown location.

It is reported that the robbers got way with a substantial amount of money. Meanwhile, Police and Immigration officials conducted a joint operation in various areas of Providenciales on Tuesday, to search for people who are suspects of serious crimes and for illegal immigrants. A number of stolen goods were confiscated and suspects were arrested. Sixteen people, including an infant, were detained by Immigration officers. The infant is presently in the care of the Welfare officers.

First Caribbean donates US $25k to the National Cancer Society of the TCI BY DAISY HANDFIELD A CHEQUE for US $25k was recently donated to The National Cancer Society of the Turks and Caicos Islands by the CIBC First Caribbean banks in Providenciales, to aid cancer prevention, care and research. The funds were collected over a three-month period and is a compilation of money raised by staff, clients, corporate sponsors, and community members through a series of fund raising initiatives. A press conference was held at the bank’s Grace Bay branch in Providenciales on Monday where the hefty cheque was presented to the President of The National Cancer Society, Rosemary Jolly. Jolly started by thanking First Caribbean for their ongoing support and added that while most are aware of cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages. The president then explained that there are about 256 people registered with cancer in the TCI. An additional US $2k will also

be presented to the Turks and Caicos Cancer Foundation in Grand Turk. Bernadya Smith, country’s assistant manager, said that since July, branches held monthly bake sales, a yard sale and Jeans Day, where staff members donated to the cause to work in casual wear. Spare change collection containers in branches also boosted donations from caring clients. CIBC First Caribbean has staged the ‘Walk for the Cure’ fundraising campaign since 2012. In five years the bank has raised close to US $60k in the TCI and over US $1m across its regional footprint. All proceeds are donated to cancer charities in the countries CIBC First Caribbean operates in. In a prior press conference, medical officials elaborated on the statistics and on the types of cancers that are deemed prevalent in men and women in the TCI. Gemma Williams, InterHealth Canada Oncologist, explained that Providenciales, understandably, has nearly three quarters of all cancer patients. Meanwhile, Grand Turk makes up 17 percent and the remaining

percentage covered the smaller islands [in terms of population] South, North and Middle Caicos. Nurse Williams added that women made up 54 percent of the cancer population in the TCI, while

men made up the other 46 percent. She said: “The breakdown of nationality; Turks and Caicos Islands by birth is 75 percent, Jamaica and Haiti combined are about 14 percent and the remaining 11 percent is made

up of about 10 other nationalities.” She also revealed that the most common cancer found among women in the TCI is breast cancer and among men she revealed that the silent killer is prostate cancer.

The history of Thanksgiving BY OLIVIA ROSE THANKSGIVING is a time to reflect upon the things that matter most in life and for which one is most grateful. Many Americans will do just that this Thursday (November 24), when they hold family gatherings, bake turkeys and embrace the warm presence of loved ones, all of which make this holiday the most anticipated holiday for Americans. Thanksgiving is often regarded by Americans as a wonderful time to celebrate getting out of school for a long weekend, and eating a great dinner, it is also symbolic for ushering-in the Christmas holiday season. When it comes to festivities, Thanksgiving is about as American as it gets. Three words – family, food, and football (the US version, that is) sum up the entire celebration. But while the US famously embraces the holiday today, it might not have existed at all had it not been for a group of English separatists who decided to set sail for the New World. According to American Scholars, in September 1620 a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers and an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith, and other individuals, lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious diseases. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March of that same year the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the

Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans. In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organised a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as America’s ‘first Thanksgiving’-- although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time. The festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations. In 1817, New York became the first of several states to officially adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday; each celebrated it on a different day. However, the American South remained largely unfamiliar with the tradition. In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance; instead, it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple, so ubiquitous it has become, all but synonymous with the holiday, may or may not have been on offer when the Pilgrims hosted the inaugural feast in 1621, scholars argue. Today, however, nearly 90 percent of Americans eat the bird whether roasted, baked or deep-fried - on Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Federation. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate. Parades have also become an integral part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route and drawing an enormous television audience.

Thanksgiving, a time for feast and reflection

It typically features marching bands, performers, elaborate floats conveying various celebrities and giant balloons shaped like cartoon characters. Although the American concept of Thanksgiving developed in the colonies of New England, its roots can be traced back to the other side of the Atlantic. Both the Separatists who came over on the Mayflower and the Puritans who arrived soon after brought with them a tradition of providential holidays - days of fasting during difficult or pivotal moments and days of feasting and celebration to thank God in times of plenty. As an annual celebration of the harvest and its bounty, moreover,

Thanksgiving falls under a category of festivals that spans cultures, continents and millennia. In ancient times, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans feasted and paid tribute to their gods after the fall harvest. Thanksgiving also bears a resemblance to the ancient Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. Finally, historians have noted that Native Americans had a rich tradition of commemorating the fall harvest with feasting and merrymaking long before Europeans set foot on their shores. Since 2014, people of the Turks and Caicos Islands have celebrated the National Day of Thanksgiving on the fourth Friday in November. This holiday has little in common

with the American Thanksgiving Day, but is celebrated on the same day. In 2014 Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Rufus Ewing, declared the fourth Friday in November to be a National Day of Thanksgiving. He encouraged islanders to set aside all their work and give thanks to God for the bounty of being on the islands, and to give thanks to their families and friends for their love and the joy they share with each other every day. Unlike the American Thanksgiving Day, National Day of Thanksgiving is primarily a religious holiday. The churches across the islands will hold special services on this day.

Salvation Army encourages everyone to give a little this Christmas THE ANNUAL Red Kettle is on again this festive season, On Tuesday afternoon (November 22), the Salvation Army, accompanied by the children of the International School, put on a mini concert outside of the IGA Gourmet supermarket to launch the Christmas event. Beautifully played and sung renditions of music by the children entertained attendees and passers-by. Weekly News spoke with the Officer in Charge of the TCI branch of the Salvation Army, Derrick Miller

about this year’s campaign. “What you see taking place this evening is an historic event, it is the launching of our red kettle campaign which was started since 1891 so this year makes it 125 years since its launch.” Miller said that this is the event they use to signal the beginning of the drive whereby they raise funds to give out goodies to the less fortunate at Christmas time. “We give out hundreds of food hampers, toys and we also have sit

down meals. The funds also ensure the continuance of the programmes that we offer this nation.” The red kettles, which are now strategically placed at supermarkets and other stores, will remain out until December 24. After that the funds will be collected, followed by a hamper distribution exercise at one location, a dinner and community hamper distributions, Miller said. This year Rob Ayer of the Gansevoort is the red kettle campaign

chairman, taking over from Stan Hartling of the Hartling group. Last year Hartling raised an unprecedented $50,000 for the Salvation Army in the kettle drive. Miller said that while there is no set expectation, they appreciate all contributions. He also observed that Hartling’s target could not have been reached without the generosity of corporate TCI, further encouraging them to give again this year. “This shows how the people of our

community are very thoughtful of the less fortunate, and that they also place their confidence in the salvation army to actually become willing to donate to us and trust us enough to distribute their donations towards what it was intended for,” Miller said. The public is also reminded that the Salvation Army has a family store where they can make donations this Christmas, which will then be converted into cash to fund the organization’s charitable programmes in the Turks and Caicos.

Fourth grade students learn how to swim through the TCI Swim Federation BY DAISY HANDFIELD APPROXIMATELY 24 students from the Oseta Jolly Primary School participated in a swimming ‘pilot’ program, through a partnership between the school and the Turks and Caicos Swim Federation. The eight-session program geared at teaching fourth grade students how to swim, was carried out throughout the entire month of November, twice a week. During the sessions the students learnt a range of basic and survival swim skills at the International School pool, as well as in the ocean. The students were taught by Jen Martel, Caleb Wilhite, Ben Stubenberg and Kate Skrzypczak. Ben Stubenberg, president of the TCI Swim Federation, said in an interview that he along with several other local swim instructors were very excited to put on this program

and that the goal is to teach as many children as possible how to swim. “Giving youngsters a proper foundation in swimming is a key mission for all of us at the TCI Swim Federation, as it builds selfesteem, promotes heath, and enables them to safely enjoy our beautiful waters. The eight sessions for these youngsters are only a start, but we are confident that with strong support, it can become the model for teaching swimming in partnership with more schools,” he said. Principal of the Oseta Jolly, Rachel Handfield, said that she was thankful for the opportunity granted to her students and that she was hoping for more classes in the near future. “We couldn’t be more excited to implement this valuable learn-toswim program with the TCI Swim Federation. Our students will learn a valuable life skill, and I am hopeful that we can include more classes in

the future,” Mrs Handfield said. TCI Swim Federation members and program organizers, Jill Swann from Total Adventure Co., Morgan Luker from Surfside Ocean Academy, and Ben Stubenberg from Caicu Naniki Sports Adventures, expressed delight in working with Principal Handfield and Oseta Jolly teachers to grow swimming in TCI. The TCI Swim Federation is looking to extend this program to schools throughout the TCI. Due to the lack of funds, the program will only be offered to other schools once a month. The Swim Federation is welcoming donations from private companies and Government establishments to build this program. Anyone interested may contact the TCI Swim Federation at tciswim@ yahoo.com

Rival parties claim victory in Haiti ahead of official elections results TWO of the main parties in Haiti have claimed victory in the general election, although the official results are not expected to be announced at least until Sunday 27 November. The centre-right PTHK party of former president Michel Martelly, who is supporting the presidential bid of his successor Jovenel Moise, proclaimed victory on 21 November. According to reports, spokesman Rudy Herivaux claimed that Moise won the first round vote, securing more than 50% and avoiding a runoff. According to AFP, hundreds of Aristide supporters poured into the streets from the poor neighbourhoods of the capital Port-au-Prince. “We’re going to stay in the street until they give us what we won at the ballot box,” declared one of the supporters. “We voted for Maryse Narcisse and she won on the first round, there’s no way past that.” Around 6.2 million people were called to the ballots on 20 November in the Caribbean nation to elect a president, 16 senators and 25 members of the Chambers of Deputies. The election was called following the invalidation of the 2015 vote, tainted by reports of massive fraud and violence. According to official reports, voter turnout was 22% of the eligible population. The Associated Press reported that nearly 1,000 Haitian

election workers are doing 12-hour shifts inside a warehouse to count the results of presidential and legislative elections. Haiti is still struggling to recover from October’s devastating Hurricane Matthew which claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people. The logistics of the voting operations were complicated by the damage the hurricane brought to the country’s infrastructures, which have been sorely lacking investment. Amid reports of irregularities which have appeared in local media, the weather conditions created a massive challenge in ensuring a smooth voting process. Jessica Hsu, foreign observer with

Reseau National des Droits Humains, was dispatched to the Grand D’Anse departments in the southwestern part of the country. She told IBTimes UK heavy rains resulting in floods across that area and in the north disenfranchised people to vote as well as complicating the process of delivering the right materials to the right polling stations. “In some cases, the voting materials never arrived”, she said. In one of the centres in the Grand D’Anse area, only 99 ballots were used out of 574 ballots available. 22 of the ballots for the senators were left blank. “People are losing confidence not so much in the president but their local leaders.”

Cayman Islands: Over 100 cases of child abuse reported this year MORE than 100 cases of physical, emotional and sexual abuse of children have been reported so far this year in Cayman as well as more than 50 reports of child neglect, but government officials believe the actual number of incidences could be ten times that. The Ministry of Community Affairs, Youth and Sports, which is currently shaping a reporting policy, met last week with representatives from local sports associations about the plans. Officials outlined concerns about the prevalence of abuse and explained the responsibility that people working with children now have to report suspected abuse. Felicia Robinson from the department gave a PowerPoint presentation on the Child Abuse Reporting Policy, as well as the potential for abuse of young people in sports and the duty sports officials have for children in their care. The Cayman authorities are currently in the process of attempting to extradite one athletics coach from the United States following allegations that when he was working in Cayman he indecently assault a girl training with him. And in 2014 a local man was jailed for four years after he admitted having a sexual relationship with a 13-yearold girl playing on one of the teams at the club where he was a football coach. While sexual abuse is nothing new

to the jurisdiction, changes to the legislation and more conversations about the problem have led to more cases being reported and ultimately more convictions. But officials believe that only one in ten cases of abuse are ever reported. The community affairs ministry is in the process of finalising a policy to help meet the requirements of Section 32a of the Children Law (2012 Revision), which mandates that certain people, including sports coaches, report suspected abuse of children to the authorities. Presenting the draft policy, Sports Minister Osbourne Bodden asked the sports associations to support the policy, which includes a codified mechanism for dealing with abuse disclosures, guidelines for mandatory reporting and screening of employees and volunteers. The ministry said the police would also be providing education on safeguarding children. Robinson said local sports organisations need to ensure that officials are provided with the information and training necessary for them to carry out their duty to report suspected abuse or neglect. Global statistics suggest that one in four girls and one in eight boys are sexually molested before they reach 18 years old. Studies also show that the average child molester may victimize 120 children before he or she is caught. (Caymannewsservice)

Prince Harry’s Caribbean visit sparks ‘Not My Prince’ campaign PRINCE Harry’s visit to the Caribbean has sparked an anticolonial social media campaign that has seen the hashtag #NotMyPrince gain increasing attention on Twitter. The 32-year-old Prince has just started a two-week tour of the West Indies after the Queen requested he visit the countries on her behalf. He is visiting seven countries, six of which the Queen is head of state – Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, St Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines. Guyana is Prince Harry’s other stop. While he was greeted in Antigua by honour guards at the airport on Sunday, critics of the monarchy were less pleased about his visit. His next stop is St Kitts. But he has been busy in Antigua and Barbuda, meeting with children and government officials, and attending several events. The #NotMyPrince campaign defines itself as an “anti-colonial welcoming committee for Prince Harry” which wants to “resist

THE world’s largest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas, will make its inaugural call at the Falmouth Cruise Shipping Port in Trelawny today, bringing more than 6000 cruise passengers to Jamaica. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said the arrival of the Royal Caribbean ship is a result of careful planning for the development of the Falmouth cruise port to accommodate mega liners. “We are structuring things so that it is going to be possible to have a Harmony of the Seas on one side and an Oasis of the Seas on the other side, all coming in one day,” he said.

And with cruise-shipping business set to increase significantly, Bartlett said a “fit for purpose” approach must be adopted by tourism stakeholders as they move towards sustainable development of the town. He said an Artisan Village for Falmouth remains on track with the feasibility studies being done, and that construction expected to start early next year. The minister said it would be a game changer, enabling small and micro tourism entities – craft entrepreneurs as well as the artisans – to have a place in the port. (Caribbean360)

Medical cannabis oil officially legal in Cayman THE governor has assented to an amended drug law to facilitate the prescription of medical cannabis oil. The step by government to legalise the medical use of ganja in the form of an oil or tinctures to treat cancer, epilepsy, or as a pain reliever for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, among a list of other conditions, was confirmed by Governor Helen Kilpatrick when she signed the amendment bill last week. With the legislative change Cayman is now a leader in the region when it comes to medical use, although the law that prevents any kind of recreational use of the drug has not been changed. Amendments to Misuse of Drugs Law were supported unanimously by legislators during the last session of the Legislative Assembly. However, there is no sign yet of government amending what many believe are draconian laws regarding the recreational use of ganja, which still criminalises consumption. Nevertheless, facilitating the medical use is a step in the right direction for people suffering from

a range of conditions that cannabis appears to control or in some cases possibly cure. The law was changed in Cayman after local photographer Dennie Warren began researching the drug after his wife was diagnosed with lung cancer. He began talking with government last year about the potential medical properties cannabis oil and the possibility that it could not only help treat and manage his wife’s cancer but there was mounting evidence that it could help put patients in remission. The challenge now for Warren and anyone else suffering from pain, disease and other illnesses that cannabis can help is to import the drug because it is illegal to export even legally sold ganja, and even though the law allows its prescription in Cayman, it is not yet legal to grow the drug here. Warren maintains he has identified ways of getting the drug, and now that the governor has signed the bill, he can begin the process of getting the oil here and for his wife to begin treatment.

Premier Michael Dunkley said that although Bermuda did not get to vote on Brexit, “we respect the decision of the UK people”.

Bermuda: Dunkley optimistic over Brexit BERMUDA’S relationship with Britain will be “stronger than ever” after Brexit, Michael Dunkley has assured the House of Assembly. The Premier, who attended the Joint Ministerial Council meetings in London earlier this month, said that the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union would not change its relationship with the Overseas Territories. He added that Government was working to ensure that Bermudians would retain free movement throughout the Schengen area. Mr Dunkley said that although Bermuda’s people did not get to vote on Brexit, “we respect the decision of the UK people”. Progressive Labour Party MP Walton Brown expressed his concern over the prospective impacts on Bermuda.

“The UK doesn’t have a very good track record of listening to the Overseas Territories,” he said. The Premier responded by saying that the JMC meetings were “the most consultative we’ve ever had” and that Government would ensure that its voice would be heard as discussions continue. He added said that potentially tighter offshore tax rules imposed by Brussels “does not concern Bermuda”. “We have consistently had direct engagement in Brussels and EU nations on a bilateral basis,” he said. “In some cases there has been assistance from the UK Government, but for the most part Bermuda has defended its own battles and developed a unique skill in highlighting our valued economic contribution to the global economy.”

Bishop backs use of death penalty in the Bahamas DESPITE calls by Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese Patrick Pinder for regional legislators to abolish the death penalty, another religious leader has come forward with demands for the enforcement of capital punishment. In a detailed statement to the Bahamian press on Monday, Citizens for Justice (CFJ) Chairman and local bishop, Walter Hanchell said he disagrees with the archbishop’s position on the issue, calling it “biblically and morally” contrary to scripture. Bishop Hanchell, of Great Commission Ministries, said his church remains a firm supporter of “restorative justice” for all those convicted of crimes other than murder. For those convicted of murder, Bishop Hanchell said they ought to “suffer the penalty of death for their crimes as prescribed by law”. Archbishop Pinder, last week, in a joint pastoral statement from the Bishops of the Antilles Episcopal Conference (AEC) in commemoration of the Catholic Church’s Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, urged governments and citizens in the region to abolish capital punishment. Nineteen bishops signed the statement. The statement said to take away a person’s “basic right to immunity from fatal harm” is to “compromise his/her sacred dignity”. However, responding to these claims on Monday, Bishop Hanchell suggested that capital punishment was not an act conceived in the mind of any human being, but was an act instituted by God according to scripture to “punish and remove” murderers from society. “It was never meant to be a deterrent even though studies show that it most certainly is,” wrote Bishop Hanchell. “Cries that capital punishment is inhumane and barbaric in the twenty first century are irrational when we consider that God has not changed and his word, which is His will for mankind, certainly has not changed and never will. “The Holy Bible in both the Old Testament and the New Testament commands that persons guilty of committing the crime of murder be punished by death. God is both a God of love and a God of justice. “All moral laws, including capital punishment, have their root in the Bible. A close study of scripture will reveal that the death penalty was always mandatory except in cases of accidental or intentional death. The word of God is clear concerning punishment for murder and no bishop, government, parliament, judiciary or agency such as Amnesty

Bishop Hanchell, of Great Commission Ministries, said his church remains a firm supporter of “restorative justice” for all those convicted of crimes other than murder.

International, has the power or authority to overrule the laws of God,” he added. Bishop Hanchell said rather than advocate for the removal of a law, perhaps religious and political leaders should look at the plight of the thousands of children who are left fatherless and the families who mourn the loss of their loved ones because of senseless killings. “If you believe that human life is a sacred gift from God, then why is the life of a wicked murderer more precious than that of his innocent victim? Nobody has the right to take a life except the state in capital offences.” Analysing the issue from a political perspective, Bishop Hanchell noted that despite the valiant efforts of the police force, the government and legislators have intentionally refused to enforce the laws of the Bahamas to the detriment of all who live here. “The ruling Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) government led by Prime Minister Perry Christie did not carry out a single execution during their first term in office from 2002 to 2007. While serving as the Leader of the Opposition in 2011, Mr Christie declared his party’s support for capital punishment. Despite record murder statistics in the current term, not a single person has been executed for the hundreds of brutal murders that have been committed in the Bahamas over the past 15 plus years.” Bishop Hanchell said politicians who were elected to enforce the law have failed “miserably in this endeavour.” He added: “In March 2006, the Privy Council ruled that the mandatory death sentence was unconstitutional. Members of

Citizens For Justice believe that this ruling was flawed since the Constitution of The Bahamas clearly makes capital punishment legal. “Capital punishment has long been abolished in the United Kingdom and most of Europe and we are of the view that members of the Privy Council have attempted to bring an end to the practice in The Bahamas.” In June 2011, the Privy Council overturned Maxo Tido’s death sentence in connection with the killing of 16-year-old Donnell Connover, whose body was found off Cowpen Road, battered and bruised and her skull crushed. There was additional evidence that parts of her body were burned after her death But the Privy Council concluded that the murder was not an example of the “worst of the worst.” In November 2011, Parliament passed legislation to define the types of murder constituting the “worst of the worst” guidelines set out by the London court. Bishop Hanchell added: “A simple legal definition of what the ‘worst of the worst’ or the ‘rarest of the rare’ has caused cold-blooded killers to have their death sentences commuted to life in prison and many are walking the streets because of technicalities in our justice system.” He said it remains a mystery why Parliament has not addressed this extremely important national concern. “We are calling again on the government to defend the Constitution of The Bahamas and for Prime Minister Christie to deliver on his promise to the Bahamian people to resume capital punishment. Citizens For Justice also calls for the removal of the Privy Council as our final Court of Appeal.” (Tribune242)

Texas teacher who had sex Ministers reject Trump’s call to with underage boy could appoint Nigel Farage ambassador face decades in prison BRITISH ministers rebuffed an unconventional call by Donald Trump for UKIP’s interim leader, Nigel Farage, to be appointed UK ambassador to the United States. In a response agreed across government, the foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, firmly said there was no vacancy for the ambassadorship, and Downing Street lavishly praised Sir Kim Darroch, the current British ambassador who was by coincidence in London briefing the UK National Security Council on the implications of Trump’s election. In a sign of the government’s unease at Farage’s elevated status with the Trump team, ministers held back from directly challenging Trump’s interference, or the president-elect’s judgment of the UKIP leader. Foreign Office ministers are concerned at the extent to which figures like Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon, may be promoting Farage, partly to fuel populist forces in the UK and Europe. Farage said he was very flattered by the president-elect’s tweet, adding it was “a bolt out of the blue”. Urging Downing Street to abandon protocol and take advantage of his connections. “The dislike of me, UKIP, and the referendum result is more important to them than what could be good for our country. I have known several of the Trump team for years and I am in a good position, with the presidentelect’s support, to help.”

As an international politician, Nigel Farage has been one of the biggest supporters of Donald Trump.

Although governments sometimes discreetly consult on the acceptability of a specific proposed ambassador, it is unprecedented for a president to state his preference in public, and to choose someone such as Farage who is determined to break up the entire EU, and has dedicated his professional life to weakening Theresa May’s Conservative party. The Conservative chairman of the foreign affairs select committee, Crispin Blunt, described Trump’s behaviour as extraordinary, saying the episode showed “in transition Trump has not got professional advisers around him who realise how gratuitously insulting it is to try to select the UK ambassador to the United States”. In the Commons, Johnson said hostility to Trump was premature and

not in the British national interest, and insisted his administration could be judged only once in office. “The UK’s relationship with the US is the single most important geopolitical fact of the last century,” he said, adding it was vital to be as positive as possible about the president-elect. He told MPs that any premature verdicts about Trump “could be damaging to the interests of this country”. He added: “It is important for us in this country to use our influence, which is very considerable, to help the United States to see its responsibilities, as I’m sure they will.” The Foreign Office permanent secretary Sir Simon McDonald also continued to claim Trump would moderate his views and prove more malleable to UK policy positions once in office. He said: “One thing I have learned is that what is said in the campaign is different to what happens when the winner is in the White House. It is very important for us to judge the new president by his actions in office.” He added the UK would be discussing Trump’s foreign policy positions, including on NATO, proliferation of nuclear weapons and trade before he finally took office, adding that Trump’s election means the UK was no longer at the back of the queue for a bilateral trade deal with the US. Bolivia schools close early as drought empties reservoirs AUTHORITIES in three Bolivian regions have called an end to the school year two weeks early as the country suffers from a severe and prolonged drought. Three reservoirs which supply the largest city, La Paz, are almost dry, and water rationing is in effect until further notice. More than 125,000 families are thought to be affected, with some communities only receiving water every third day. President Evo Morales declared a national state of emergency on Monday. The recently-created “water cabinet” in the country is planning to distribute water from 100 tankers in La Paz, where long queues for water have formed each day. “We have gone more than three weeks without a water supply,”

The Ajuan Khota water reservoir, pictured, is at 1% of its capacity, and supplies the capital city.

Rocio Lazarte, a school director, said. “All we had for the children was the water from the hillside.” The water cabinet has also asked foreign companies for help with technical advice, the La Razon newspaper reported. He told the newspaper that longterm projects such as the provision

of wells and aqueducts, as well as diverting rivers, were being considered, but such ideas would take up to a year to implement. President Morales has blamed the crisis on global warming, saying he had seen the dry lakes from which the country draws its water first-hand from a helicopter. (BBC)

A TEXAS middle school teacher who was impregnated by a 13-yearold student could face up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child. Alexandria Vera, who was arrested in June, told police that she fell in love with one of her students after the two began a relationship through Instagram messages. The 24-year-old former eighth-grade English teacher at Stovall Middle School in Houston also said that the boy’s family was supportive of the affair. Vera, who pleaded guilty on Wednesday, was initially charged with continuous sexual assault of a child, which carries a maximum punishment of life in prison. By pleading guilty to a lesser charge, her sentence was capped at 30 years, according to the Houston Chronicle. She also is eligible for deferred adjudication, in which case she will be placed on probation and will have no felony on her record if she successfully completes the terms, the Houston Chronicle reported. “We’re very much hoping for deferred adjudication,” Vera’s attorney, Ricardo Rodriguez, said, according to the Houston Chronicle. US atheist sues after Kentucky refuses ‘IM GOD’ licence plate AN AMERICAN atheist is suing officials in the US state of Kentucky after he was refused a personalised car licence plate which reads “IM GOD”. Bennie Hart says the point of the plate is to show the impossibility of disproving anyone’s claim to being God. But transport chiefs in the religiously conservative state ruled that it might distract other drivers and would be in bad taste. Civil liberties campaigners have taken up Mr Hart’s legal case. He says he had the same license plate when he lived in the state of Ohio for 12 years without any problems. “I simply want the same opportunity to select a personal message for my licence plate just as any other driver,” said Mr Hart, who lives in Kenton County, northern Kentucky. “There is nothing obscene or vulgar about my view that religious beliefs are subject to individual interpretation.” The American Civil Liberties

Bennie Hart says he used the number plate in Ohio without any problems.

Union of Kentucky (ACLU-KY) and the Freedom From Religion Foundation have filed a lawsuit on Mr Hart’s behalf against state transportation secretary Greg Thomas on grounds of free speech. ACLU-KY Legal Director William Sharp said that under the US First Amendment, government officials “do not have the authority to censor messages simply because they dislike them”.

World News Dubai: Alleged rape involving British nationals was consensual A RAPE investigation involving a British national allegedly assaulted in Dubai has been closed after a prosecutor concluded the sex was consensual. But officials did not explicitly say what happens to the charge against the woman, who was arrested and accused of extramarital sex, despite her accusations of rape. The Dubai Media Office did say Tuesday that the woman and the two men accused -- also British nationals -- “are in the process of receiving their passports and are free to leave the UAE.” “A thorough review of statements given by the British woman and the two suspects as well as the reports of investigating officers from Dubai police showed that the act happened with the consent of the three parties in question,” the Dubai Media Office said, citing the public prosecutor’s office. “A video obtained from the mobile phone of one of the suspects detailing the act was a key evidence that supported this conclusion.” According to Detained in Dubai, a UK-based legal advice group, the woman was gang-raped by British nationals. “The victim reported the rape to police and was promptly arrested herself on charges of having extramarital intercourse,” the group said. If convicted of consensual extramarital sex, a defendant can face anywhere from a month to

Brought in by a squally cold front, BBC Weather said the high winds were expected to clear to the east through the course of Thursday afternoon. Further strong winds and a brief but intense spell of rain are anticipated, before clearing into the North Sea this evening, BBC Weather added. Dyfed Powys Police said trees and roof tiles were also blown into roads, with several being forced to close. Thomas Scarrott, director of the Clarach Bay Holiday Village, near Aberystwyth, said around 15 to 20 caravans had been upended and overturned. He said: “As I was walking out of

It was a “lucky escape” for Thomas Scarrott at the Clarach Bay Holiday Village.

the door the wind started to increase and it went from zero to take cover in seconds. My initial thought was it must have been a tornado.” He added: “The danger now is that the wind is blustery and blowing the debris. There are large sheets of metal blowing around. We’re OK indoors.” As the high winds spread east, the Grinshill Animal Rescue Centre near Shrewsbury reported “major damage”. She said: “Dogs and cats are safe thank God. We are OK, a little wet and wind swept.” Richard Sherratt, from Preston

Gubbals, north Shropshire, said: “It’s chaos. “I had a telephone call to say two of our trees had broken off, blown down, blocked the road and taken the electric wires with them at the same time. “The road was completely blocked by branches and electricity cables.” Richard Dowman, estate manager at the Leaton Knolls estate in Shropshire, said the estate had lost a “tremendous amount” of trees. “We’ve ended up a bit of a casualty, we’re just trying to get the roads open,” he said. Kenya refuses to Six electors have vowed to register atheist group cast ballots against Trump AN HIV-positive Malawian man who claimed he had sex with at least 100 women — including children — as part of traditional cleansing rituals, has been sentenced to two years in jail. Eric Aniva, 45, known in his town as “hyena” was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for “harmful practices” in a Nsanje courtroom Tuesday after revealing that he slept with 104 women without telling them he’s HIV positive. “I am disappointed because I thought I would be given a suspended sentence,” Aniva said outside the courtroom. President Peter Mutharika ordered Aniva’s arrest in July following his confession. Aniva was supposedly paid to have sex with widows, women who had abortions and teenage girls after menstruation to initiate them into adulthood. The judge’s reason to convict Aniva was that he “had no regard

to the feelings of widows, no regard to dignity of women and it is even doubtful that condoms were used,” adding that “such a culture has no place in Malawi.” But his lawyer, Michael Chipeta called the judge’s decision a “miscarriage of justice.” “There were a lot of errors made in the conviction and sentencing,” the lawyer declared. As a “hyena,” Aniva engaged in those sexual acts as part of Malawi’s spiritual cleansing culture. “Hyenas” are men who are paid to have sex with women to release evil spirits and to prevent death, according to cultural practices. “Harmful cultural and traditional practices cannot be accepted in this country,” a Malawi government spokesperson said in a statement. “These horrific practices, although done by a few, also tarnish the image of the whole nation of Malawi internationally and bring shame to us all. (NYDailynews)

AT least six electors — members of the Electoral College whose votes actually elect the President — have vowed to cast ballots that don’t align with the popular vote results of their states, Politico reported Tuesday. If they carry out their intentions — in effect, becoming “faithless electors” — they would narrow Donald Trump’s margin-of-victory in the Electoral College over Hillary Clinton. “The Founding Fathers created the Electoral College as the last line of defense, and I think we must do all that we can to ensure that we have a Reasonable Republican candidate who shares our American values,” he said. Added elector Bret Chiafalo, who along with Baca is part of a small group called Hamilton Electors, “All we’re trying to do is honour what the Founding Fathers gave us.” Some electors told Politico that they were attempting to persuade

some of their Republican colleagues in the body to vote for someone other than Trump, but they would need at least 15 additional electors (and likely many more) to sway the race. As it currently stands, Donald Trump has won 290 electoral votes, while Clinton has won 232. The results in Michigan, which has 16 electoral votes, remain too close to call. If Trump fails to win Michigan — an unlikely outcome, as he leads Clinton by more than 11,000 votes — Clinton would still need at least 22 electors to disregard their states’ popular vote and pick her over Trump. Alternatively, Trump could be prevented from winning the Electoral College if he — in addition to losing Michigan — saw at least 21 electors abstain from voting altogether. That outcome would leave Trump with 269 electoral votes, which would then result in the House of

Representative determining the election. “If it gets into the House, the controversy and the uncertainty that would immediately blow up into a political firestorm in the U.S. would cause enough people — my hope is — to look at the whole concept of the Electoral College.” To win the election, a candidate must secure 270 electoral votes. The Electoral College comprises 538 electors from the 50 states. The number of electors is determined by the number of senators and representatives for each state. Members will meet on Dec. 19 in their respective states to vote for President. It is extraordinarily rare for an elector to not obey the will of the voters from her or her state. Throughout U.S. history, the highest number of faithless electors occurred in 1808, when six declined to vote for James Madison. (NYDailynews)

West’s hospitalisation could lead to hefty insurance pay out for cancelled shows: report KANYE West’s recent hospitalisation could lead to a hefty pay out, according to reports. The “Famous” singer has an insurance policy in place that covers him if an illness prevents him performing — and it takes care of not only the money he would have made, but also what he owes, according to TMZ. West reportedly lost $30 million for cancelling the shows — which were slated to wrap up with a New Year’s Eve show at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center — and he is also on the hook for even more cash owed to venues and other vendors. The insurance company could deny coverage if there was a previous condition that was undisclosed or if the illness was caused by “unreasonable or capricious behaviour,” according to TMZ. However, it is unclear if West was suffering from anything prior to this week.

The rapper cancelled the remainder of his tour on Monday, just hours before he was hospitalised for his own “health and safety” after he began behaving erratically during an examination for sleep deprivation at his trainer Harley Pasternak’s home. “He’s been working around the clock on fashion design, both his own line and the Adidas line,” the source said. His mother-in-law Kris Jenner also said the stresses of the tour really started to weigh down on the “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” rapper. “(I think he’s) just really tired,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s a gruelling tour.” Not to mention he’s been spending a considerable amount of time away from his wife Kim Kardashian, who was recently robbed at gunpoint and his two young children, which played a factor in his breakdown, sources told TMZ. ‘Wedding Crashers’ sequel is in the works more than a decade later IT’S time to crash another wedding. The hit comedy “Wedding Crashers” is getting a sequel — 11 years after it first hit theaters, Variety reports. The celebrated 2005 film starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson is getting a second shot in a sequel being developed by New Line, one of the film’s stars Isla Fisher said on “Today” this week. Fisher reportedly heard the news from Vaughn, but had no other details. New Line confirmed a project was in the works, but have yet to seal the deal with stars Vaughn, Wilson, Fisher, Rachel McAdams, Bradley Cooper and Will Ferrell — or the original film’s director David Dobkin, according to the Guardian. Dobkin discussed the possibility of a sequel back in 2014 — but nothing had come of it at that time. “Wedding Crashers came out at a time when people weren’t doing lots of sequels. We did come up with a great take. Vince, Owen and myself sat around at Owen’s house one day and broke the story. It was really, really funny,” the told the website

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn starred in 2005’s “Wedding Crashers.” There has been no confirmation yet that the duo will be back for the sequel.

Quora at the time. “We wanted Daniel Craig to be the ultimate wedding crasher, with his sexy body and his speedo, and the two guys would be incredibly threatened by him. He was like the next generation terminator of wedding crashing,” Dobkin added.

The original film follows divorce mediators Vaughn and Wilson as they show up to weddings uninvited in order to hook up with vulnerable single women. “Wedding Crashers” grossed $285 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.

Trump welcome at Hamilton, says Broadway musical’s creator Beethoven composed and wrote Allegretto in B minor on 29 November 1817.

‘Beethoven’ musical score row between Sotheby’s and expert A ROW over a handwritten score “by Beethoven” being sold at auction for up to £200,000 has broken out between an expert and its sellers. Professor Barry Cooper, who has studied the composer’s manuscripts, claims there are inconsistencies within the 1817 piece, Allegretto in B minor. Auctioneers Sotheby’s said copying the piece was “not conceivable”, adding the lot would go on sale on 29 November. Ludwig van Beethoven composed and wrote Allegretto in B minor on 29 November 1817 for an English visitor to Vienna, the auctioneers said. Mr Cooper, professor of music at The University of Manchester, claims the 23-bar piece was written a day earlier on 28 November 1817. He said inconsistencies in the auction item include one note D being copied as C, and double bars and natural signs do not resemble Beethoven’s handwriting. Professor Cooper, who has

studied Beethoven’s manuscripts for more than 40 years, said. “I am thoroughly familiar with every detail of his handwriting, which is why I am certain this manuscript is not in Beethoven’s hand. “My hunch is that it was copied from the original shortly after it was composed and that the copyist tried to reproduce it by carefully working to the best of his ability,” he said. Simon Maguire, head of musical manuscripts at Sotheby’s, said: “The experts that I have shown it to are world renowned. “I don’t think it’s really conceivable that you can get that handwriting of music so fluently if at the same time you are trying to copy somebody whose handwriting is idiosyncratic [distinctive/unique].” Mr Maguire has invited Prof Cooper to view the manuscript being sold. Professor Cooper has said studying a copy is “as good as the original”. (BBC)

THE creator of Hamilton has said Donald Trump is welcome to attend his musical, the cast of which Trump attacked this week for “harassing” his running mate. “We welcome anyone,” LinManuel Miranda told the BBC, adding that the American presidentelect’s daughter had seen the show and written “wonderful things”. Mr Trump demanded the cast of Hamilton apologise for addressing Mike Pence from the stage after Friday’s show. Miranda, however, insisted Mr Pence had been spoken to in a “respectful” way. ‘We welcomed Pence’ Vice President-elect Pence was booed by some audience members as he arrived at New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre on Friday. Later, as he prepared to leave, he was asked by cast member Brandon Dixon to stay in the auditorium and listen to a brief address. “When we found out he was coming we welcomed him, we asked him to lead on behalf of all Americans and we related to him the anxieties that some of us feel,” Miranda told the BBC. “But I feel like we did it in a really respectful way.” Miranda went on to answer in the affirmative when asked if Mr Trump would be welcome to attend a Hamilton performance.

Miranda answered “yes” when asked by the BBC if Trump would be welcome at Hamilton.

His comments, on Saturday, preceded Mr Trump’s tweets criticising Mr Pence’s treatment. Miranda was a vocal supporter of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the US presidential election. The award-winning actor and writer, who gave up the title role in Hamilton earlier this year, is currently in London rehearsing for his role in Disney’s upcoming Mary Poppins sequel. Mr Pence’s experiences at Hamilton prompted Mr Trump to lambast the Hamilton cast for their “terrible behaviour”. He also suggested the show itself was “highly overrated”.

His opinion, though, differs from that of his daughter Ivanka, who wrote that her “very high expectations” had been “surpassed” when she saw the musical in March. Hamilton, a musical about America’s first treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton, won 11 Tony awards in June and is one of the hottest tickets on Broadway. The show, which has a mixedrace cast and a score made up of rap, hip-hop and R&B tracks, will open in London next year. Miranda’s music can currently be heard in Moana, a Disney animation about an adventurous Polynesian teenager, whose songs he co-wrote. (BBC)

NEARLY 100 women decked out in their finest dresses and embellished in exotic hats, attended the fourth annual Ladies Hat Luncheon over the weekend, geared as a fund-raiser for the improvement of schools throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards the Holy Family Academy and the Enid Capron Primary, both Providenciales schools.

The event was held last Saturday at the Grace Bay resort and featured an array of activities, such as live entertainment and raffles. Rebecca Reaston-Brown, a committee coordinator, who was present at the event said that she was more than enthused that she along with other committee members are able to raise funds for positive causes in the TCI. “We are delighted to have the Ladies fourth annual Luncheon which raises much needed funds for local education. We love seeing how excited these schools are when we

are lucky enough to present them with money, to help with different causes. It could be air-conditioning, classroom extensions, or just as simple as a photocopier. “We hold the event because it is so much fun dressing up. All these ladies come together on the island and they always look fabulous. Their husbands and some gentlemen attend the event, sometimes matching the ladies’ outfits. We have wonderful hat categories, phenomenal judges and amazing entertainment,” she said. Local songbird, Barbara

Johnson, performed in conjunction with the Enid Capron choir during the event.” Special attraction for the event was a silent auction, which offered amazing prices on items and gift certificates for the Amanyara, a cruise on Kenard Cruises and certificates for restaurants, hotels and spas. The main highlight of the event was the display of hats, ranging in all styles and categories. Great prizes were awarded to the winners. Alex Sky was the winner of the ‘Beautiful by Nature’ hat. The ‘Most

Creative’ hat went to Ellen Wright. Kanzy Dillon took home the ‘Best Ensemble’ hat, while Nicola Gregorie and Anna Bourne both tied first place for the ‘Best Hat’. The Ladies Hat luncheon is held in November of every year, and funds raised from the sale of tickets, silent auctions, donations and live auctions are donated to various charities in the Islands. Last year the committee raised approximately US $25,000 that was split between the Ianthe Pratt Primary School and the Holy Family Academy.

Astronomers discovers one of the most massive objects in the universe THROUGH the thick fog of our own galaxy, astronomers have spotted an ultimate prize: one of the largest known structures in the universe. Called the Vela supercluster, the newly discovered object is a massive group of several galaxy clusters, each one containing hundreds or thousands of galaxies. “I could not believe such a major structure would pop up so prominently” after an observation of that region of space, said Renée Kraan-Korteweg, an astrophysicist at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, in a press release. Kraan-Korteweg and her team published their discovery of the supercluster — named after the constellation Vela, where it was found — in the Monthly Notices Letters of the Royal Astronomical Society. A GIANT HIDING BEHIND THE MILKY WAY It may be hard to believe that such a huge object could go unnoticed, but it makes more sense when you consider where we all live. The Milky Way is our expansive galactic home. It hosts more than 100 billion stars, trillions of planets, and colourful clouds of gas and dust. This makes for a brilliant playground to study individual objects like black holes, the formation of alien solar systems, or potentially habitable extra-solar

planets. This is especially true of objects behind the galactic plane, which is us looking through the 100,000 lightyear-wide disk of the Milky Way from the inside out. To peer through it, KraanKorteweg and her colleagues combined the observations of several telescopes: the newly refurbished South African Large Telescope near Cape Town, the Anglo-Australian Telescope near Sydney, and X-ray surveys of the galactic plane. Using that data, they calculated how fast each galaxy they saw above and below the galactic plane was moving away from Earth. Their number-crunching soon revealed

that they all seemed to be moving together — indicating a lot of galaxies couldn’t be seen. “It became obvious we were uncovering a massive network of galaxies, extending much further than we had ever expected,” Michelle Cluver, an astrophysicist at the University of the Western Cape, said in a release. Despite that extra and rapidly increasing distance, however, Vela’s influence can’t be denied. The researchers estimate that Vela’s gravitational tug on the Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way, has sped them up by about 110,000 mph (50 kilometers per second).

Space engine that defies laws of physics might actually work GOOD news for all you EmDrive enthusiasts: A new study suggesting that the seemingly impossible space engine may actually work has passed the peer-review process. The study — which was led by physicist Harold “Sonny” White, of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston — found that an EmDrive design generated small amounts of thrust in the lab. These results were leaked online recently, and now the paper has been published, in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ Journal of Propulsion and Power. Development of the EmDrive was begun by British scientist Roger Shawyer about 15 years ago. The engine works by bouncing microwaves around inside a chamber; it requires no propellant

and could therefore usher in a new era of superfast and efficient spaceflight, advocates say. There’s just one little issue: The EmDrive shouldn’t work, if you put any stock in Newton’s Third Law of Motion (“for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction”). The EmDrive doesn’t blast anything out the back, so just how it produces thrust. The new study is just a lab test, and it doesn’t prove that the EmDrive definitely works — White and his team couldn’t rule out all sources of experimental error, for example — so don’t let visions of EmDrivepowered spaceships fill your head. However, its publication is the latest in a series of recent steps suggesting that the technology may be more than a sci-fi dream. (Space.com)

Bagged salad is Salmonella risk, study finds BAGGED salad can fuel the growth of food-poisoning bugs like Salmonella and make them more dangerous, a study says. University of Leicester scientists said the moist environment combined with nutrients leaching out of chopped leaves created the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The researchers said they were shocked at the way the bacteria thrived, even in the fridge. They advised people to eat bagged salad on the day they bought it. Despite their wholesome nature, fresh green leaves and salad foods are often involved in food poisoning. An outbreak that affected more than 2,000 people across Europe in 2011 was traced back to bean sprouts and this year, officials in England traced an outbreak that killed two people back to bags of rocket leaves. Studies have shown that salad can carry bacteria, but the research team showed the bag made things much worse. Bags are often moist to help keep

the salad crisp and fresh and the plants have often been chopped into individual leaves for convenience. The study showed sugars, proteins and minerals escaped from the cut leaves into the water in the bag. “That’s a reasonable amount of nutrients if you’re a bacterium,” said researcher Dr Primrose Freestone. The study, published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, showed that an initial contamination

of 100 Salmonella bacteria would increase to 100,000 within five days. “That’s more than an infectious dose,” Dr Freestone said. She said she was also “shocked” that the bugs did so well in the chilled environment in the fridge. “Don’t be alarmed, we still eat bagged salad, but don’t keep bagged salad any longer than you need to, we normally buy it on the day we eat it.

THE mosquito-borne Zika virus will no longer be treated as an international medical emergency, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared. By lifting its nine-month-old declaration, the UN’s health agency is acknowledging that Zika is here to stay. The infection has been linked to severe birth defects in almost 30 countries. These include microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally small heads and restricted brain development. The WHO says more than

2,100 cases of nervous-system malformations have been reported in Brazil alone. Although the virus is mostly spread by mosquitoes, it can also be sexually transmitted. It was first identified in monkeys in Uganda in 1947. Most were small and Zika has not previously been considered a major threat to human health. But in May 2015 it was reported in Brazil and has since spread rapidly. “Its current explosive pandemic re-emergence is, therefore, truly remarkable,” the US National Institutes of Health said. Being sexist could harm men’s health, study suggests IF you’re looking for a noncontroversial topic for the Thanksgiving table, this may not exactly be it—but there’s a fascinating psychological phenomenon, outlined in the Journal of Counselling Psychology, that’s worth knowing about, given the social and political climate these days. The new study finds that masculine norms (a.k.a. sexism) are strongly linked to poorer mental health and well-being in the men who exhibit them. It’s rather a no-brainer that experiencing sexism would harm a woman’s mental health, but the fact that it also seems to be linked to worse mental health in men is telling, and disturbing. The meta-analysis, carried out by a team at Indiana University Bloomington, looked at data from almost 19,500 male participants taking part in earlier studies. The men had answered questions that measured various indicators of sexism. The team was especially interested in traits that are that are considered markers of traditional masculinity: Winning, emotional control, risk-taking, violence, dominance, playboy (promiscuity), self-reliance, primacy of work (how important one’s work is to him), power over women, disdain for homosexuals and pursuit of status. It turned out that the more a person conformed to masculine norms on average, the more likely he was to have poorer mental health, the less likely he was to have good mental health, and the less likely he was to seek psychological help. Three of the norms—self-reliance, playboy behavior, and power over women—were more closely linked to the negative mental health outcomes. And this is likely because these items are more strongly tied to sexist beliefs. “The masculine norms of playboy and power over women are the norms most closely associated with sexist attitudes,” write the authors. “The robust and unfavourable association between conformity to these two norms and mental healthrelated outcomes underscores the idea that sexism is not merely a social injustice, but also has deleterious mental health-related consequences for those who embrace such attitudes.” A couple of items didn’t hold the same connections: Primacy of work wasn’t linked to any of the mental health outcomes, which the authors suggest may reflect how complicated our relationship with our work can be. And risk-taking was linked to both poor mental health and good mental health, which may imply that it can have different outcomes depending on the person. Overall, though, the

study calls out some interesting insights about the sometimes serious pitfalls of classic masculine norms. “Much of what this study unpacks is what a lot of us have known, perhaps anecdotally and through our own life experiences, for a long time,” says Andrew Reiner, a professor at Towson University, who has written extensively on the subject, and is now writing a book. “The more that men of all ages insulate themselves in traditional and, especially, hypermasculine norms, the more they wrap themselves in behavior that distances themselves from their deeper emotional honesty and needs. This kind of behavior, especially the old Marlboro-Man-ruggedindividualist ethos, distances men in their relationships with women, with other men and with, most poignantly, themselves. It encourages an emotional, and ultimately physical, isolation because it teaches men that—if they’re going to earn their Man Card—then they need to handle all of life’s problems on their own.” And that’s the particularly disturbing part of the study—that not only are masculine norms associated with unhappiness, but they’re also associated with the absence of help-seeking, which makes the phenomenon selfperpetuating. For these men, says Reiner, “seeking mental health counseling smacks of too much vulnerability and is perceived as the ultimate failure when it comes to masculine accountability…. And the hyper-masculine message of needing to dominate women is a way of hiding their deeper insecurities— just like with the Marlboro Man ethos, it teaches them to mask their insecurities and desire for emotional connection through behavior that gives the appearance, the false front, of strength.” The issue also extends way beyond a man’s personal experience, since it heightens the risk for other serious problems, like substance abuse and suicide, says Reiner. It may also permeate business interactions and even politics, which we’re certainly seeing these days. Hopefully a younger generation will begin to break down the conventional norms. But it may take some work, and some time. “This isn’t a problem for macho guys alone,” says Reiner. “Many younger, more sensitive, emotionally balanced young men also still buy into this traditional masculine norm and fear themselves failing as men for this reason. It’s a big reason why we’re seeing an uptick in the growth of men’s groups. They want to exorcise this old demon for the sake of their own survival, literally.”

Does the coconut crab have the most powerful claws? The enormous claws of a coconut crab may be more powerful than they look – and they look pretty scary. The crab native to islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans can grow up to a leg-span of 3 feet and a weight of nearly 9 pounds, making it the largest terrestrial crab. Being such massive animals, coconut crabs (Birgus latro) try to eat whatever they can get their burly claws on. While that mostly means vegetation like the hard-shelled coconut for which they are named, they are also know to prey on other small animals like kittens. Anyone who has ever tried to crack open a coconut without tools knows this is quite the feat, even for a 9-pound crab. So a team of scientists decided to measure exactly how much force these hefty crustaceans can exert when they pinch their prey. As it turns out, the coconut crab’s claw can pinch with a force greater than that of any other crustacean that has been measured, according to a paper published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. The 9-pound crustacean could exert a force of up to 3,300 newtons, according to the new research. That’s more than 4.5 times as forceful as the grip strength of most humans. As for the top land-dwelling predators, crocodiles top the crabs with bite forces of about 16,460 newtons. But the crabs come closer to hyenas, lions, and tigers, which snap their jaws shut with a force of about 4,450 newtons. (It is important to note that the coconut crabs do not snap their pinchers shut like the big

cats. It’s more of a crushing force than a sudden snap.) “We expected the force would be very strong. But the actual powers exceeded our expectation,” study lead author Shin-ichiro Oka, a chief researcher at the Okinawa Churashima Foundation in Japan, writes in an email to The Christian Science Monitor. “And we were also surprised that their pinching force was approximately 90 times of their body weight,” he says. If he himself were a coconut crab, Mr. Oka points out, at about 145 pounds, he could crush something with about 6 tons of force. So what is behind these massive

pinching forces? “One of the things that crabs have is a very large concentration of muscle fibers that have a unique property, being exceptionally long sarcomeres,” Graeme Taylor, a biologist at Western University in Canada who studies animal biomechanics but was not part of the coconut crab study, explains in a phone interview with the Monitor. Sarcomeres are a component in skeletal muscles that make it able to contract, so by having especially long sarcomeres, he says, “what that enables the crabs to do, in fact, is be able to produce a quite large force per unit area of muscle.”

Antarctic explorers help make discovery—100 years after their epic adventures Heroes of Antarctic exploration have played a crucial role in research that suggests the area of sea ice around Antarctica has barely changed in size in 100 years. Ice observations recorded in the ships’ logbooks of explorers such as the British Captain Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton and the German Erich von Drygalski have been used to compare where the Antarctic ice edge was during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration (1897-1917) and where satellites show it is today. The study, published in the European Geosciences Union journal The Cryosphere, suggests Antarctic sea ice is much less sensitive to the effects of climate change than that of the Arctic, which in stark contrast has experienced a dramatic decline during the 20th century. The research, by climate scientists at the University of Reading,

estimates the extent of Antarctic summer sea ice is at most 14% smaller now than during the early 1900s. Jonathan Day, who led the study, said: “The missions of Scott and

Shackleton are remembered in history as heroic failures, yet the data collected by these and other explorers could profoundly change the way we view the ebb and flow of Antarctic sea ice.

Football sex abuse claims: White latest ex-player to come forward FORMER Manchester City and England player David White has become the fourth footballer to speak publicly about being sexually abused as a child by a coach. White follows ex-Crewe players Andy Woodward and Steve Walters, and former Tottenham forward Paul Stewart. The 49-year-old claims former Crewe coach Barry Bennell, a convicted paedophile, abused him. Cheshire Police said 11 people had come forward since Woodward went public. The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) expects that number to rise. The four players to speak publicly have each waived their right to anonymity as sex abuse victims. White said: “For a number of reasons, and for nearly two decades, I kept my ordeal secret from my family and friends. “While I believe throughout my football career I have come to terms with what had happened, I now realise the effects of Bennell’s actions were much more far-reaching than I knew then.” White, who is not one of the 11 people to come forward to Cheshire Police, said “circumstances took me away from the abuse before it escalated”. “I salute Andy Woodward, Steve Walters and Paul Stewart for so bravely revealing their personal tragedies,” he added. “The physical abuse they and others suffered was certainly more extreme and prolonged than my ordeal, and I cannot be sure that I would have their courage.” Woodward, 43 and Walters, 44, have spoken about being abused by Bennell, who was jailed for nine years in 1998 for sexual offences against children. Bennell, who worked as a football scout and coach at Crewe Alexandra in the 1980s and 90s, admitted 23 specimen charges of sexual offences against six boys, aged nine to 15. Stewart, 52, a former England

Barcelona forward Neymar attended Spain’s national court earlier this year.

David White, who is releasing a book about his abuse, said he was targeted at the age of 11 by a coach he “hero-worshipped”

international who started his career at Blackpool and also played for Manchester City and Liverpool, told the Mirror an unnamed coach abused him daily for four years up to the age of 15. White, who is releasing a book about his abuse, said he was targeted at the age of 11 by a coach he “heroworshipped”. After making more than 340 appearances for Manchester City, he went on to play for Leeds United and Sheffield United, and won a single cap for England. He said he does not feel “brave” but “like one of the lucky ones” despite the “profound effects of 1979-80”. White added: “I have come to terms with the fact Bennell’s actions influenced almost every event and relationship in my life. “The process of writing the book became sometimes painful, always cathartic and incredibly liberating.” PFA chief Gordon Taylor said: “Because of Andy Woodward’s bravery, many other ex-players and apprentices are now contacting us - it is double figures now - and that is a timely warning for everybody in football about our duty of care to these youngsters. “It is up to all of us now to grasp the nettle and we make sure we learn from this.” Det Insp Sarah Hall, from

Cheshire Police’s public protection unit, said: “We have now been made aware of a number of people who have come forward wishing to speak to the police. “At this stage we are in the process of making contact with them, and to date no arrests have been made and no-one else is under investigation.” Crewe chairman John Bowler has told BBC sports editor Dan Roan he was “infuriated and very disappointed” about Bennell’s crimes. Bowler, who was chairman at the time of Bennell’s offences, was asked whether more could have been done. He replied: “When we’ve done our inquiries and looked at the detail of the various accusations, then I’ll be in a position to answer that kind of question.” Woodward told BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme on Tuesday that he believed his experience was “the tip of the iceberg”. A spokesman for the NSPCC praised the former Sheffield United and Bury defender for coming forward, adding there was “more to be done in the world of sport” to keep children safe. Sue Ravenlaw, head of equality and safeguarding at the Football Association, has also praised Woodward, 43, for his “immense courage” in going public with his story. (BBC)

Champions League: PSG star Serge Aurier barred from UK AN Ivory Coast international soccer player was not allowed to play for his French club in a key Champions League match after the British government revoked his visa. Paris Saint-Germain had wanted to include defender Serge Aurier in their squad to play Arsenal in Wednesday’s game but he’s had to stay behind in Paris. Aurier was granted a UK

entry visa in October, but British authorities have since reversed the decision because of the player’s September conviction for assaulting a police officer. The club argues it informed the UK government of the case from the outset, and says Aurier’s pending appeal should render him innocent until proven guilty. PSG says it only learned of the

decision at 1400 CET Tuesday despite six days of negotiation to find a solution and calls the “extremely tardy response.” “The immigration rules clearly state that non-EU nationals who have received a custodial sentence of less than 12 months within the last five years will be refused on criminality grounds,” the UK Home Office said in a statement.

Spanish court calls for Barcelona player to serve two-year prison sentence SPANISH prosecutors have called for Barcelona forward Neymar to be sent to prison for two years for his part in a corruption case over his transfer from Brazilian club Santos in 2013. Judge Jose Perals also called for a five-year sentence for former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and a fine of 8.4million euros (£7.2m) for the club. Rosell, Neymar and his father are set to stand trial. Under the Spanish legal system, prison terms of under two years are typically suspended. The case stems from a complaint by Brazilian investment group DIS, which owned 40% of Neymar’s transfer rights and alleges it received less money than it was entitled to from transfer fee. Rosell resigned as the club’s president in 2014 for his role in the affair and testified in court in February alongside Bartomeu,

Neymar and Neymar’s father. The club struck a deal with prosecutors in June to settle a separate case, paid a £4.7m fine and avoided trial on charges of tax evasion over the transfer. Barcelona thought they had brought the affair to a close when judge Jose de la Mata archived the case in June, although Spain’s public prosecutor successfully overturned the ruling in September, allowing the case to proceed. Neymar’s Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi was sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud earlier this year. He has appealed against the sentence. Since moving to the Nou Camp, 24-year-old Neymar has won two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, the Champions League, the European Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Club World Cup. He signed a new five-year contract with Barcelona in October. (BBC)

Andy Murray clinched the tennis world number one spot for the first time at the beginning of November.

New York JFK airport shooting scare ‘was sparked by Usain Bolt 100m celebrations’.

Bolt spurred JFK airport panic, World number one Andy Murray cops made it worse, review finds ‘too young’ for knighthood TENNIS world number one Andy Murray has said he is “too young” for a knighthood. The 29-year-old, who beat Novak Djokovic in the ATP World Tour Finals on Sunday, has been tipped to be named in the New Year honours list. However, the Wimbledon champion and successive Olympic gold winner said he could “still mess up” and “make mistakes” in his career. Murray was previously honoured with an OBE after winning the US Open in 2012. In order to receive an honour, the names of nominees must be put forward by members of the public or government departments before being considered by a selection committee. Murray became tennis world

number one at the beginning of November after a year which saw him reach 12 finals in 13 events and achieve an impressive 24 wins in a row. Among those calling for him to be recognised are businessman and TV personality Lord Sugar, while former prime minister David Cameron said back in 2013 that he could not think of anyone “more deserving” than Murray of a knighthood. “I am still young and there are still a lot of things that can go wrong, I could still mess up and make mistakes. Do stuff wrong. I am just trying to keep doing what I am doing, working hard, and achieving stuff.” While a knighthood remains a possibility, Murray is now favourite to be named this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year - an accolade he has already won twice. Arena returns to lead US soccer team after Klinsmann sacking BRUCE Arena’s return as the head coach of the United States men’s soccer team was confirmed Tuesday following the sacking of Jurgen Klinsmann. The 65-year-old Arena leaves his role as head coach of Major League Soccer team LA Galaxy and returns to the US side after eight years in charge from 1998-2006. Arena won 71 of 130 games in charge of his country and took the team to fourth in the FIFA rankings. “When we considered the possible candidates to take over the Men’s National Team at this time, Bruce was at the top of the list,” US Soccer president Sunil Gulati said in a statement. “His experience at the international level, understanding of the requirements needed to lead a team through World Cup qualifying, and proven ability to build a successful team were all aspects we

felt were vital for the next coach. “We all know Bruce will be fully committed to preparing the players for the next eight qualifying games and earning a berth to an eighthstraight FIFA World Cup in Russia.” Klinsmann, 52, was relieved of his duties with the US bottom of its World Cup qualifying group following losses to Mexico (1-2) and Costa Rica (4-0.) Highlights of Arena’s US managerial career include beating Portugal 3-2 in the 2002 World Cup, before overcoming rivals Mexico 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals. “While we remain confident that we have quality players to help us advance to Russia 2018, the form and growth of the team up to this point left us convinced that we need to go in a different direction.” The next World Cup qualifier for the US will take place against Honduras in March. POOR communication among police, private security and other personnel contributed to a mass panic that erupted at a New York City airport when loud cheers for Usain Bolt somehow led to a false report of gunshots, according to a review by a team of top security officials. Passengers at Kennedy Airport ran for the exits on Aug. 14 after cheering at a terminal bar during the Olympics was mistaken for something sinister. Panic spread to two other terminals when news of a gunman spread on social media, and police responded by drawing their weapons. A letter from the officials to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, made public on Monday, blamed both airport employees and law

enforcement for fuelling the hysteria by overreacting to several mistaken reports of gunshots, instead of seeking to calm travellers. Among the more glaring missteps: At the height of the chaos, the flight crew of a Korean Air jetliner deployed evacuation chutes, “producing a ‘popping’ sound that may have been mistaken for gunfire.” The officials also said that in the end, the airport had no efficient way to let travellers know the threat wasn’t real. Since the Sept. 11 attacks, “the spectre of terrorism has embedded itself in the national psyche and created a persistent, abiding tension that cannot be ignored,” the letter concluded. “Coordination and training … is absolutely fundamental to properly address this new

paradigm.” Cuomo ordered the review after the episode raised questions about the ability of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport, to respond to an actual terror attack. “The events at JFK were a wakeup call to rethink and re-evaluate our security procedures to reflect the new, changing reality of 21st century threats and to better ensure the safety of all New Yorkers.” A review of security video and recordings of 911 calls found that the chain-reaction scare began with a call about a disturbance at a cafe, where travellers were watching TVs showing Bolt sprint to a gold medal victory in the Olympics. Several calls that followed reported shots fired in the same terminal, the letter said.

Jordan and Kareem honoured by President Obama WITH the clock running out, President Obama took one last shot. The man who spent the morning of his historic election eight years ago playing basketball spent some time on his way out of the White House to pay homage to two of the sport’s all-time greats. Tuesday was about much more than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan, of course. Obama used his last presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony to honour 21 high-achieving Americans, from the woman whose computer programming enabled the Apollo program to land on the moon to the singers who have provided the soundtrack to our lives. And after Obama vocalized his appreciation for each and every honoree, be it actor or architect, then draped medals around their necks -- and with the teleprompter turned off -- Obama took a turn toward the personal. “These are folks who have helped make me who I am,” Obama said. Unlike the software of Bill Gates or even the songs of Bruce

Michael Jordan (in picture), along with fellow NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, were among 21 to receive the highest American civilian honour.

Springsteen, incorporating sports stars into American life is more optional than necessary. But if you care about basketball, Kareem and MJ were practically mandatory. Of Abdul-Jabbar, Obama said “The reason we honor Kareem is more than just a pair of goggles and a skyhook. He stood up for his Muslim faith when it wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t popular. He’s as comfortable sparring with Bruce Lee as he is advocating on Capitol Hill, or writing with extraordinary eloquence about patriotism. Physically, intellectually, spiritually, Kareem is one of a kind:

An American who illuminates both our most basic freedoms and our highest aspirations.” Serious praise for someone known primarily as a basketball player, and likewise a banner day for the sport. Sometimes it takes the White House to make you realize how much basketball matters. On my first visit there in 1997 to see Bill Clinton honor the 1996 champion Chicago Bulls, the post-ceremony throng around Jordan was larger than the group waiting on Clinton. I shook Clinton’s hand that day; never got within shouting distance of MJ.

Nick Diaz believes he would have led Nate Diaz to victory over Conor McGregor Nick Diaz wasn’t allowed to corner Nate Diaz in his rematch with Conor McGregor and the former UFC title contender believes it may have cost his brother the fight. The elder Diaz brother was banned from cageside after failing to pay a fine to the Nevada State Athletic Commission when he was suspended for 18 months following a failed drug test for marijuana. Now Diaz says his absence may have been the difference in his brother getting a victory rather than leaving the Octagon that night with a majority decision loss to McGregor. “It’s just like one inch. That’s the difference on how that fight could have gone and as far as I’m

concerned, I definitely would have been that inch. They just wanted to keep me out of there. It would have definitely helped him out a lot,” Diaz told “The Opie Show” this week. “I was seeing things in that fight that I would have called and told him. Like I was seeing things that he wasn’t seeing ‘cause I do these things and I know how they work out for me. It’s kind of like a formula. It’s like this is what you do. Come the third or fourth round if I would have been there, I think we would have been able to put it together and get that guy out of there.” With Nick not being allowed to corner his brother or even help him warm up in the back, the responsibility fell to former

lightweight title contender Gilbert Melendez to lead the way instead. Melendez has cornered both Diaz brothers several times throughout their careers, but Nick believes he could have offered a few minor details that would have clinched the victory at UFC 202. “The thing is (Gilbert) Melendez is there and the thing about Melendez, he’s great, he’s really smart, he knows what he’s looking at but they’re training partners so they’re kind of opposites stylistically cause he’s more of a wrestler. He goes on top. So the things that Gilbert would tell him to do is more of what Gilbert would do. Like what I would tell him to do is more of what he would do,” Diaz said.

DANE RITCHIE has gained his first appointment on the FIFA Referee’s list. The sports enthusiast has been appointed as an assistant referee. He joins Gianni Ascani, who was reappointed as a FIFA referee for the third consecutive year. The appointments are the highest in the football refereeing world. According to a press release from the TCIFA, both Ascani and Ritchie have been involved with the TCIFA initially as players and volunteer coaches over the years. During that time they joined the TCIFA’s Referee Programme and readily took advantage of the various training courses and refereeing opportunities that ultimately led them to the plateau on which they now stand. As FIFA referee and assist referee they will be assigned to future international and club games including World Cup Qualifiers and CONCACAF Champions League Games throughout the Caribbean, Central American and North

American region. The release stated: “The ultimate goal is to be assigned to a World Cup Finals Tournament and the TCIFA is both hopeful and optimistic that as an organisation, one of our referees will reach that goal. This is just the beginning.” “We are so proud of Gianni and Dane’s accomplishments, which they truly deserve. Both gentlemen are very committed to the refereeing programme and invest a lot of time into their personal development and the development of other officials. Hopefully, this will serve as a motivational factor for other referees in the programme. “The FIFA appointments no doubt further raises the profile of the TCIFA. Even though we are a small organisation, but by having a structured refereeing development programme with dedicated people at the helm, we are certain there will be many other appointments to follow,” stated President Sonia BienAime.

24TH ANNUAL PGC CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Dods, Glugosh and Srinark claim top prizes – But youngsters shine FRASER Dods won his second Men’s Club trophy in seven years, while the consistent Tammy Glugosh retained her Ladies’ Club title and made it number three in total when the curtains came down on the 24th annual PGC Club Championships last weekend at the Provo Golf Club. Veteran national golfer Jumphol (JP) Srinark was not left out as he copped the Senior Club title. The TCI Golf Association president Dods finished with a score of 157, while Srinark tallied 159 and Glugosh 162. A total of 37 golfers competed in five men’s flights and three women’s flights. Among them were some outstanding youngsters. Nine-year-old junior national

golfer Kurt Rivers won the Men’s 5th Flight with a score of 173, while another national junior, 11-year-old Brooke Rivers won the Ladies’ 1st Flight with an outstanding 164. In July, the preteen finished tied for first place in the U14 age division at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships in Barbados. Fellow teammate at the junior competition, Augustina Rebolledo won the Ladies’ Second Flight. The 13-year-old tallied 182. The Ladies’ 3rd Flight was won by Carol Brown with a score of 193. Srinark won the Men’s 1st Flight, Rick Sanmiya (162) won the second flight, Mike Kenney the third and Peter Waltz the fourth.

The three overall winners from last weekend’s PGC Club Championships.

Former national athlete wins bodybuilding trophy in Canada FORMER national sprinter Denique Scott finished second overall in a bodybuilding competition last weekend in Canada and he just might change sports. The 25-year-old, who is finishing his bachelor’s degree in Mineral Engineering at the Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, began weight training to improve his fitness for track, but he soon fell in love with it. Now he is torn between the two sports. “As of now I have a genuine interest in both track and bodybuilding, however track is currently on a pause, yet I am still in great, if not better shape to lace up the spikes,” he told the Weekly News. The former Clement Howell high school student finished second overall in the Men’s Physique Class at the Santa Anderson East Coast Classic last Saturday night. He advanced to the finals after winning his group. With the finish Scott has qualified for the Provincials for 2017 and 2018. “My plan is to improve and bring a better package to the provincial stage which will take place April 15th, 2017. Hopefully I can do well enough to qualify for the national stage and see what happens from there.”

Scott was undecided about competing up to two months ago, but once he decided he was totally devoted to his cause. “Honestly I was getting a lot of compliments from family and friends ever since I started getting serious about the gym and they encouraged me to do a show. I didn’t make up my mind on whether I was going to do the show for sure until about eight weeks ago, but really got the prep going exactly seven weeks out. At this point there was no turning back and it was hard work, dedication, determination, patience and good work ethic to make it to show day. Day in, day out was all hard-core training, topped off with HIIT cardio to dial in on my already lean physique. The goal was to come in as lean, proportionate and full as possible. By show day I had only lost 5-6lbs and that’s including water.” The 2009 CARIFTA Games sprinter said his diet fuelled his transformation. “Diet was strict to complex carbs, healthy fats, vegetables and high protein. This made up six meals total per day. I also consumed 6L of water every day.” On the track Brown is the only athlete to have medalled for his school over the last four years. He competes in the 60M.
