Hundreds recover from Covid-19 in the TCI
BY OLIVIA ROSE
NEARLY 700 people in the Turks and Caicos Islands have recovered from Covid-19 to date. The high rate of Covid-19 recoveries is due to early detection of the virus and aggressive widescale testing, according to the health minister. From the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the TCI has recorded 711 confirmed positive cases, with more than 5,000 tests conducted throughout the territory. Speaking in the House of Assembly on Tuesday (November 10), Hon. Edwin Astwood said: “The Turks and Caicos Islands continues to see a decrease in active Covid-19 cases. “Additionally, we all can see that the mandatory and voluntary public health measures that have been put in place by our Government to help stop the spread of this coronavirus before it gets out of control, continues to show its effectiveness.” He said that more than 695 persons in the TCI have now recovered from Covid-19. “…about four more since my last availability this past Thursday during my weekly Covid-19 press conference. “There are currently five identified active Covid-19 cases, four identified in Providenciales, and one in North Caicos. Currently,

structured settings, like restaurants or other businesses, where measures are in place to prevent transmission. “Limit your cohorts to no more than three: your core household, your school or work group, and one other sport or social cohort. “Wear a mask in all indoor work settings, except when alone in a workspace like an office or cubicle, where you are safely distanced from others.” Even as the TCI makes great strides in the battle against Covid-19, the health minister reminded residents to offer their support to those who lost their loved ones to the virus. Astwood stressed that the ongoing community testing initiative is playing a crucial role in preventing further spread of the virus in communities. “Community testing is working, it is picking up asymptomatic persons who could have become a super spreader in their community, and those individuals can now be immediately isolated from others.” He reminded residents of the importance of working collectively to prevent and decrease the spread of the disease. “We all must continue to take action now to help with ensuring the slow or better yet the non-spread of the virus, and making sure our health system can continue to be in a position to support patients with Covid-19 symptoms, influenza and many other needs, if and when necessary. “I want to continue to remind all, that the Government’s approach is based on science and evidence, with the purpose of balancing efforts of protecting our people’s health and our country’s economy, and to limit the spread without resorting to more aggressive control measures, that can have a negative impact on the well-being of our citizens, and our country on a whole.” Astwood pointed to a number of voluntary measures that each person can adhere to further prevent the spread of Covid-19. He said: “Stop holding social gatherings in private homes, instead, socialise outdoors or in

Beaches to remain closed for the entire winter season BY OLIVIA ROSE BEACHES TCI will not be reopening its doors on November 18, and will remain closed for the entire winter season. In another unexpected twist in the Beaches and TCIG tax saga, the resort this week informed Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, Leader of the Opposition Washington Misick and Governor Nigel Dakin in a letter of its decision to remain closed until April 2, 2021. This comes just one week after the Government claimed that the resort pulled out of mediation in the ongoing multi-million-dollar tax controversy. Beaches later denied the Government claims and said it remained “ready and willing” to resolve the matter. The resort’s delayed closure is likely to further impact the territory’s tourism sector which is still reeling from the economic downturn brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Although most hotels have reopened, occupancy rates are low across the TCI due in part to the delayed reopening of Beaches. The all-inclusive family resort is responsible for the majority of air passengers to the territory, a reduction of which can affect airline schedules. Generally, December to April is considered peak season for travel to the TCI as thousands of visitors flock to the Caribbean to escape the northern winter. Even though Beaches has not officially announced its decision to the public, Leader of the Opposition Hon. Washington Misick confirmed the resort’s decision. Speaking to the Weekly News on Thursday (November 12), Misick said he has held discussions with the Governor’s Office and the Premier’s Office to work towards an amicable solution. “I think it’s an issue that has significant impact for the TCI and I think it’s one that politics should not play a part in because of the serious implications it has for the economy. “I’ve engaged with the Government so we could all come to a resolution long before the date indicated in that letter. “I believe that Beaches has an interest in resolution because the longer this matter is unresolved it would affect the TCI but it will
affect Beaches so I would have to assume that they want a resolution sooner rather than later.” In an invited comment, Minister of Tourism Hon. Ralph Higgs echoed similar sentiments. He stressed that the Government is hoping for a swift resolution. “Beaches is an important partner of the TCI economy. We would like a resolution sooner rather than later and we are doing everything to bring a resolution to this matter.” ‘FAR REACHING EFFECT’ In a statement issued on Thursday (November 12), former premier Michael Misick called on the Government to “do everything in its power to ensure the smooth reopening of Beaches”. He said the Government and the private sector should work together to find solutions to address this dire situation. “The continuing closure of our largest resort is having a dangerous and far reaching effect on hundreds of citizens who work there and other business persons who provide services to this entity. “Furthermore, it will have a dramatic effect on the level of airline service coming into these islands…” Misick added that if it is clear that Beaches will not be reopening, it is his opinion that the company should be made to repatriate the hundreds of foreign workers in its employ. “In fact, all hotels and businesses that have foreign workers in the Islands and have no work for them to do should be made to repatriate these persons immediately. “There are hundreds of Turks

and Caicos Islanders in the hospitality industry who are out of work. “The existing hotels and villas that are currently operating should be made to absorb our people first in their operations even if it means terminating the services of their foreign staff. “These are difficult times and our people are hurting and need
relief.” Beaches is said to owe the Government $76.4 million in penalties on taxes owed in the amount of $26.7 million. However, the resort claims its development agreement was violated by the current Government and it had been overpaying taxes. In a statement on October 19, the resort said it wanted the
Government to honour the terms of its development agreement and other legally binding commitments. “Breaches of these agreement(s) by TCIG is the reason Beaches was compelled to file its lawsuit in May 2019,” it said. The company maintained that it has not asked the Government for any “favours” or “special treatment” in this matter.
TCI removed from UK quarantine list BY DELANA ISLES THE TURKS and Caicos Islands has been removed from the United Kingdom’s quarantine list. The announcement was made around midday on Thursday (November 12), by Secretary of State for Transport of the United Kingdom, Grant Shapps. The news was celebrated on Instagram by Governor Nigel Dakin who congratulated all who put in the work to have the territory removed from the list. “Some good news. At midday (local) today the UK placed TCI on
its Travel Corridor list. “This means that anyone returning to the UK after a holiday in TCI, or anyone traveling from TCI to spend time in the UK, will not need to self-isolate.” The governor said the decision made by UK ministers was informed by a number of factors, including the latest epidemiological assessments and the entry requirements for UK travellers into TCI. “Baroness Sugg was able to inform the premier of this decision, through myself, earlier today,” Dakin stated.
He said a great deal of work by a number of people went into getting the territory into this position. “Increased testing played a significant part. Having robust border controls another. The extraordinarily long hours and hard work by our health team. “The in-country support by Public Health England (PHE). Enforcement as well. “Employers and businesses played their significant part, and of course the people of TCI did as well - and are the most important of all - wearing a mask and socially distancing is
absolutely key to keeping our economy open. “This is not a moment to rest on our laurels, but build on this progress.” The governor added that this is good news for the TCI: “Given the diligence that went into this decision I hope other destinations - New York for example - weigh today’s decision by the UK in the balance of their own important calculations. “A big thank you to everyone, everywhere, who worked so hard to make this happen. Let’s keep it going TCI.”

A Weekly News column that puts you on the spot for your opinions on the issues of the day
LEADING CARIBBEAN DESTINATION THE TURKS and Caicos Islands is for the first time leading the Caribbean region as US tourists’ destination of choice. According to Squaremouth.com, a US travel insurance aggregator, the TCI is the fifth most popular destination of choice in the world for Americans. It is surpassed only by the US, Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom. The website reported on October 29 that the TCI is also the fastest-growing international destination, shooting to fifth place up from 60th in 2019. What are your thoughts?
Beautiful and safe
While some persons complain about the Government and all the curfews and lockdowns, between the Government and the TCHTA they did a very, very good job. Not only with safety protocols and guidelines but also with promotions. The TCI is still by far one of the most beautiful and safest place to take a vacation. We now wait for places like New York to lift some of their travel restrictions and we will certainly see an even greater number of tourist arrivals to these Islands. I do hope we all do our part to continue to strive for the number one spot.
Does not add up
Maybe we should put this properly into perspective before getting overly Trumpy about this. This data is only based on a squaremouth. com survey of travel insurance policies taken out. The TCI is mandating every visitor to acquire travel insurance now.
More formidable
While we are definitely ‘beautiful by nature’ and I am very pleased of the growing interest and contributions in areas ranging from transportation to villas or Airbnb of
locals in the industry, much is still needed in protecting the interests of the TCI people. However, our rave is owing to the beauties and the beasts among us - each valuably contributes to our gateway, some bigger than others, to which we must be grateful. The Government’s tune and temperament needs to strike the right chord in our present atmosphere of dispute, negotiate for the people and on behalf of a bigger equity in this industry, a pandemic proportion for the locals’ prosperity and employment greater than the past. Let’s get on with making this international presence more formidable, this time around with locals and TCI culture more at the forefront. Together each of us can achieve more.
Change needed
This is great news, however we are not successful until Turks and Caicos Islanders participate more and own our economy. Most of the funds generated in this country are exported out of the country. This must change.
Great marketing
The report from Squaremouth.com, a US travel insurance aggregator, that the TCI is fastest growing international destination,
must be deemed a scientific kind of finding. For the Islands to move from 60th place to number five speaks to great marketing efforts, strategic market initiatives and proper management of the brand TCI by the Ministry of Tourism and the more responsible stakeholders. The brand is solid and the flagship moving to new entrants like the Ritz Carlton, a higher, more reliable five-star brand, the image of TCI moves in better situation. Under this kind of administration, careful management of the reopening of the Islands from Covid-19 lockdowns, means that in 2021 and beyond the TCI will continue to do exceptionally well. The Tourist Board couldn’t pay for this kind of imagery, marketing and outreach for the TCI. The evaluation comes from an independent and objective source. This kind of good news comes at a great time when the Islands are seeking to reopen in a responsible way. It places the pressure on Beaches and others to stop playing games with this country, reopen and get on board with the progress.
More Covid-19 cases
Other countries are sensible in not allowing American tourists because of the pandemic that is rampant in the USA. This news is nothing to brag about as we are opening ourselves to increase Covid-19 cases!
A few ideas
Keep up the good work and urgently try to get crime under control. Look to constructive rehabilitative justice and programmes that work for the young, educate the people and afford full opportunities for all while getting illegal immigration under control. Just a few ideas for starters.
Infinite possibilities
News of this nature is amazing, breathtaking and redolent of more exciting times for the region. Where the TCI is right up there with the US, Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom in terms of attractiveness and popularity tells an exciting tale of progress for these Islands with infinite possibilities for positive growth. More critically it speaks volumes for the product and tourism offerings. It can only mean that word is getting out that the TCI is the place to visit. No doubt, in this online world we live in, potential visitors surveyed see the dramatic decline in Covid-19 cases. Case management of this nature makes the Islands seem safer and the place to be in times of a global epidemic. Despite attacks from within from certain ‘inspired’ quarters, selfish resort stakeholders such as Beaches, the brand is resilient and standing tall through it all. It may be early but it is time to celebrate and take note of this kind of success. Contact with the resorts by visitors, locals, the cuisine, the culture and the general peaceful nature of the gives an enchanting and irresistible feel to the country. One can thank the work of the Tourist Board, Ministry of Tourism and the responsible stakeholders in the Hotel and Tourism Association.

Double murderer to spend rest of natural life at HMP BY DELANA ISLES THERE is no possibility of parole for two time convicted murderer Christoper Forbes who will continue to serve the entirety of his life sentence. In a virtual Supreme Court hearing on Wednesday (November 11), Forbes appeared before Judge Tanya Lobban-Jackson. He was brought before the court for a resentencing hearing in accordance with the Parole of Prisoners Amendment Ordinance 2020 which was passed on January 6. The amendment stated that a prisoner sentenced to life becomes eligible for parole after serving 30 years, except where there are extenuating circumstances where a lower period of incarceration may be imposed. Or in the case of Forbes, aggravating circumstances, exceptional in nature, where the court may impose a longer period of incarceration. However, the possibility of
parole was denied and the judge ruled that he will spend the rest of his life at Her Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk. The Weekly News reached out to Forbes’ lawyer, Craig Oliver of Wessex Fairchild Attorneys for comment on this historic decision by the court. Oliver confirmed that he challenged the constitutionality of the ruling, but would like to peruse the judge’s written ruling before further comment on the matter. In 2016, Forbes, a Bahamian national, killed two young Dominican women - Sorineida Moreno Arias and Yuneiry Veras. On October 21, 2019, he was finally found guilty on two counts of murder. Since that time, Forbes has been a steady character on social media, using cell phones to broadcast commentary live online. That is, until officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force were seconded to the penitentiary, seizing phones and
CJ sends three men to trial, two others released KENDALL Missick has been committed to stand trial to face charges of unlawfully and indecently assaulting a female child. The man appeared in court before Chief Justice Mabel Ageyman on November 5, and it was determined that there is sufficient evidence against him for the sexual assault on the child. The case has since been adjourned to the next plea and directions hearing at which time Missick will be required to enter a guilty or not guilty plea to the charge. The accused has since been released on bail. He is represented by attorney Lara Maroof-Misick. Meanwhile, in another case, 22-year-old Erlin Dortastin will face a trial on charges of possession of a firearm and a robbery committed at Pizza Pizza in March. The crime was committed on March 10, when the defendant was alleged to have entered the pizza shop along Leeward Highway in Providenciales armed with a gun and demanded money. Dortastin was swiftly arrested, and on March 11, officers of the Criminal Investigation Department recovered a .40 calibre pistol and magazine. Also discovered were parts of a cash register. These items were found behind a plaza along the Leeward Highway and were processed and
seized by the Forensic Support Unit. Dortastin is being represented in his case by attorney Sheena Mair. He too will plead to the charges at the next scheduled plea and direction hearing. A third matter was heard by the chief justice last week on November 5. Upon application to the court by their lawyers Lara Maroof-Misick and Sheena Mair, the cases against two Haitian nationals Youseline Telmuse and Steeve Santana were dismissed. The defendants were at the time appearing for their sufficiency hearing on firearm and ammunition charges, when it was found that the evidence was not sufficient to proceed to trial. The case against a third defendant Luckendy Pierre was not dismissed. His matter was adjourned to a later date. Pierre is represented by attorney Finbar Grant. Police had to ram the three defendents off the road during a high-speed chase along Five Cays Road in Providenciales a few months ago. A subsequent search of the vehicle unearthed the gun and ammunition. There was a fourth person who fled the scene on foot after the car was forced off the road by police, he remains at large.
other contraband prisoners kept. In August 2016, Forbes was arrested by police following a stake out at a home along Millennium Heights. He was later charged with the murders. Both victims, aged 26, were first reported as missing, then were found dead in Providenciales within three months of each other. Yuneiry went missing on April 18 and was found five days later in Pirate’s Cove, an area in northwest Providenciales. Sorineida went missing on July 10 and was found three days later, also in northwest Providenciales, in Crystal Bay. Prosecuting the case for the Crown was Quinn Hawkins (one of the SIPT prosecutors) and Angeleek Dickenson of the Director of Public Prosecution’s Office. Both lawyers presented the court with overwhelming evidence against the accused. Namely, CCTV footage of Forbes picking up one of the victims in Five Cays in a vehicle he is known to drive on a regular basis, his DNA on a pink towel found around the mouth and neck of one of the victims at the crime scene,
Christoper Forbes (left) killed Sorineida Moreno Arias and Yuneiry Veras
his DNA on a condom found near the body of one of the women, his DNA under the victims’ fingernails and other parts of their bodies. Other evidence included the discovery of both bodies in the same location, close to Forbes’ residence, the strikingly similar manner in which both women were killed, Forbes’ admission to police that he knew the victims. Also handwriting samples found in a victim’s passport that matched that of the accused, and phone records which showed Forbes was in
communication with both victims on the nights they went missing. Testimony given by the medical examiner stated that the victims succumbed to blunt force trauma to their heads. Representing the defendant were Queen’s Counsel Jerome Lynch and Mark Fulford of F-Chambers. Efforts to sway the jury by providing explanations for the evidence and alternative theories, all proved futile. Forbes did not take the stand in his own defence.

Pandemic heroes to be honoured on December 10 BY DELANA ISLES
Sabrina Green, director of the TCI Human Rights Commission, is excited to celebrate pandemic heroes
RESIDENTS are being encouraged to nominate their pandemic heroes to be honoured by the TCI Human Rights Commission this December. They can do this by visiting the commission’s page on Facebook to fill out the form or listening out on Radio Turks and Caicos over the coming days for a cell number to text a vote. International Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on December 10 all around the world. In commemorating this special day, the commission will be hosting an open-air celebration in its parking lot to honour not just one humanitarian, but all who are nominated by residents. The Weekly News spoke with director Sabrina Green about the change in format for this year’s celebration. “This year would be our third award show,” she said, “however, we figure that in the current climate
where so many persons are feeling the brunt of the pandemic, whether its loss of job or income or underemployment, we thought instead of having a glamour and glitzy event, that perhaps it is time to celebrate the persons among us who went above and beyond to ensure that persons in need had the necessary assistance.” Green said there will be no winners this year at the awards, “in fact the entire country would be winning, those persons who rose to the occasion”. Another adjustment to the annual event will be its location. “We’re not going to the Shore Club this year with this event, we are going to host it on International Human Rights Day, December 10. “We are going to be putting up a tent in our parking lot and we are going to celebrate our pandemic heroes.” She said these heroes are frontline workers and individuals or organisations that came to the
rescue of those in need. Anyone can nominate their pandemic hero by visiting the commission’s page on Facebook to fill out the form. The human rights director said people in the sister islands who may not have access to Facebook or reliable internet, can listen out for a notice on Radio Turks and Caicos in the coming days, so that they too can vote for their heroes. She said a cellular number will be aired during the radio notice for those persons to text in their nominees. During the big tent event on December 10, certificates will be handed out to the nominees. Green emphasised that the commission did not want to forego the ceremony, but wanted to put a more humanitarian spin on it. All health protocols and social distancing will be observed during the event.
Dental services available in North Caicos THE GOVERNMENT dentist will be visiting North Caicos on Wednesday, November 25. Anyone needing dental treatment can visit Bottle Creek Health Clinic during normal working hours, a Government press release said this week. All visitors should wear a mask, stay two metres away from other patients and follow all Ministry of Health protocols on prevention of spread of Covid-19. Following this visit, the dentist will be carrying out regular visits to North Caicos on the second and last Wednesday of every month. All non-urgent dental services were suspended in April due to the announcement of the coronavirus pandemic. The Government advised the public to improve home care of teeth by adding a third brushing, flossing twice daily, and using antimicrobial rinse daily, rinse. Other advice to maintain oral health included drinking plenty of water, eating fruit and vegetables, not using any tobacco products, and limiting alcoholic drinks. Father-of-three reported missing CONCERNED family and friends of a missing boat captain have organised a search and rescue mission to locate him. Father-of-three Claudin Noel, who works at the Amanyara Resort on the west coast of Providenciales, was last seen at about 9am on Wednesday (November 11). On Thursday, friend Sandra Dolce reached out to the Weekly News to ask the public for help in finding him. The 45-year-old drove a small boat to Turtle Cove Marina on Wednesday but never returned home, Dolce explained. The police press office released a missing person report on Thursday asking the public to look out for him. It read: “Mr Noel left the Turtle Cove Marina in a grey inflatable vessel powered by a 65 HP Yamaha engine headed for Amanyara Resort, but has
not been seen nor heard from since.” Blue Hills resident Noel has a wife and three children who live with him and is an active member of Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church. “He is known to be very friendly and kind. Mr Noel is about six [foot] in height, dark skin and medium build,” Dolce said. “A known resident of the Blue hills community, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands. There have been no sign of him.” Dolce asked anyone who may have any information on his whereabouts to call 911 or make contact with Pastor Daniel on 332-1960. “We would like the general public to be aware and assist us in this search and rescue. “His family is in dire need of any information,” she said.

Newlyweds who drowned off Parrot Cay laid to rest
Dangerous riptides cited as cause of tragic deaths BY OLIVIA ROSE A PAKISTANI-American couple who drowned during their honeymoon at Parrot Cay were laid to rest in New Jersey on Sunday (November 8). The victims were corporate attorney Mohammad Malik, 35, and Dr Noor Shan, a 29-year-old surgical resident at NYU Langone Health. They had been married only four days before they were pulled under by a rip current while swimming near their resort, COMO Parrot Cay, on October 28. Their bodies were later released to their families following an extensive investigation by detectives of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. The groom’s brothers, Salman, 41, and Ahmad, 22, travelled to TCI to identify the bodies. His father, Colonel R Maqbool Malik, told Long Island’s Newsday that the couple were swimming in chest deep waters when they were pulled out to deep sea by a rip current. He explained that their bodies
were fished out of the water by witnesses who performed CPR, but unfortunately they died at the scene. “This is a shock beyond belief and it’s a tragedy of different dimensions when you have to lay two children to rest in a joint funeral,” he said. The grieving father criticised COMO Parrot Cay for failing to post warning signs about potentially dangerous riptides. Chris Orlikowski, spokesman for COMO Parrot Cay, told the Weekly News that the resort has fully cooperated with the TCI authorities with their investigation into this incident. “COMO Parrot Cay and the COMO Group are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred while hotel guests were in the ocean off Parrot Cay in late October,” he said. Mohammad Malik’s law firm Olshan Frome Wolosky in a statement said: “They were both shining lights who touched everyone who had the benefit of knowing them. “Mohammad was a humble,
bright and talented attorney and a truly kind and gentle soul. “Mohammad always strove to live life to the fullest and to appreciate the richness of human experience. “We deeply mourn this incomprehensible loss of exceptional members of our Olshan family. They will be deeply missed.” The police force concluded their investigation into the tragic incident on November 4, according to police press officer Takara Bain. Detectives found no signs of foul play, nor any criminal negligence during their extensive investigations and the deaths were ruled as accidental. Last year on August 5, a couple from Houston, Texas, and their family friend died in a while swimming through shallow water with their children on Bambarra beach on Middle Caicos. Irma Barrera, 34, and Roy Perez, 38 and their friend Dr Richard Okoloise encountered a riptide fuelled by high winds which pushed them further out to sea.

Democracy can breathe once again ONE side of a deeply divided nation is celebrating history. Block parties erupted from coast-to-coast in the US with spontaneous celebrations, mostly in cities, shortly after Joe Biden won Pennsylvania and the presidency. More celebrations ensued around the world. In Paris, church bells sounded. The sky over London illuminated with fireworks. Millions more in scores of countries stopped to reflect the ousting of president Donald Trump. World leaders from Europe to Canada, Asia and the Middle East congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Back in America, Biden’s voters are frantically screaming, it was the first time in 3.5 years they’re able to breathe. Meanwhile, Trump is yielding to baseless claims about election frauds and refused to concede, supported by his loyalists: Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz and Rudy Giuliani who are blindly echoing this rootless claim. Nonetheless, a pre-eminent Republican election lawyer, Benjamin L Ginsberg is bulldozing Trump’s propaganda about widespread mail-in voters’ fraud. The famed lawyer for nearly 40 years

who represented four GOP presidential candidates and played a pivotal role in Florida’s 2000 presidential recount penned a Washington Post op-ed, claiming, Trump’s allegations are unsustainable and lack evidence. “Legions of Republican lawyers have searched in vain over four decades for fraudulent double voting. “At long last, they have a blatant example of a major politician urging his supporters to illegally vote twice. The only hitch is that the candidate is Trump,” Ginsberg wrote. Many have lauded America’s political system as the most stable, yet, it has eroded, displaying stalemates in Congress, the White House and voters on both side of the aisle.
President Trump exhibited grave ineptitude and his incapacity to govern efficiently illuminated. His administration’s inadequate response to the Covid-19 pandemic help to annihilate the lives of 238,000 Americans and million more infected. First, he down-played the severity of the virus and called it a hoax. He defied science and refused to follow safety protocols, declined to mandate and wore a mask, and held super spreader events. Amid the pandemic Trump halted funding to WHO, crippling the organisation’s ability to adequately control the spread and when millions of Americans need it the most the president is battling to banish Obamacare. During his slumber the economy
crumbled, catapulting unemployment past ten percent and the stock market plummeted. He aggrandised himself, belittled minorities, and embarked on racist sentiments, igniting and revering white supremacy in America and the populous noticed. In 2016, Trump entered the White House as an unpopular divisive figure – as America’s second pick. He now leaves in the same vein, as a spurned loser of the total votes. The lines from one of William Shakespeare’s 420-year-old iconic spiels, ‘All the world’s a stage,’ explicitly apply to Trump’s ordeal. In it, Shakespeare said: “And all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts.” In the end, these famous phrases purport that a man in his declining years returned to being an infant again, facing “second childishness and mere oblivion”. That Trump leaving as he came, confronting a loss that fuses his presidency as an unpopular chapter in America’s political history.
Lessons learned from the US elections
I LOVE the US political system. I love there is a term limit for the president. There is an established date for elections in the US, unlike the TCI where the incumbent Government has the advantage of setting the day for election and in so doing can manipulate the process. Another aspect I like about US politics is that there are fundamental differences between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, in the TCI there are really no differences between the main political parties. The United States election has been an interesting one in that the process was very lengthy before confirmation of president elect. Now that the election results are over, there are some lessons that we can learn from it. I believe the election was a vote against Trump, not necessarily a vote for Biden and Harris. I believe no matter who the Democratic nominees were, they would have won because Trump has been portrayed as being

racist and a divider. He also was criticised heavily for his handling of Covid-19 and was blamed for the thousands of Americans that died. Even prominent Republicans crossed the party line to vote against Trump. How many of us in the TCI are willing to cross party lines? If there is one thing that we learn from the US elections, is that one vote matters. Biden received more than 75 million votes. In 2016, even though Hillary Clinton
received the majority of popular votes, it is believed because the turnout was not great she did not win the presidency. In the TCI, many people are fed up with the politicians and don’t see the need to vote. Your vote is important. In 2016, the polls predicted that Hillary Clinton would win. In 2020, the polls predicted that Biden would win, but with double digits over Trump. While Biden did win, it was a close and so the polls were wrong just like they were wrong in 2016.
The lesson learned is that there are people who are not saying anything about who they will vote for until they mark that X and when the votes are counted the pollsters are surprised with the outcome. Millions of dollars were spent on campaigns. Despite that, people still voted for who they wanted to vote for. We see that African Americans continue to vote largely for the Democratic Party. Some people vote for the Republican Party because they feel that the values of the Republican Party line up more with the values of God. Despite this, Christian people still vote for Democratic Party. One thing I can say about politics is that if there is one thing in common among politicians it is that they play on the emotions of voters to gain their trust so that the voters can vote for them. Do not take people for granted because when people reach a point in their lives where they had enough, they will vote you out.

TCI celebrates geographic information systems TECHNOLOGY is the central theme of a day of celebration set to be held this November. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day recognises the innovative ways in which technology is used by government agencies and private corporations. It celebrates how it provides increased efficiency and the delivery of critical services to citizens. This year the day will be held under the theme, ‘Share your passion and inspire the world with GIS’. The Department of Environment and Coastal Resources will be
hosting a virtual workshop on November 18 exploring the benefits of GIS on a local, regional and international scale. The day was started in 1999 as an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real world applications. It is often employed to address challenges in critical areas such as emergency response, environmental protection, healthcare, public works, zoning and land use. Ten-year physical development plan completed BY DELANA ISLES A NEW Physical and Sustainable Development Plan has been drafted for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Over the past week (November 9 to 14), the Government has been conducting follow up consultations to present the final draft of the plan. The new plan is an update of the expired 1987 National Physical Development Plan, and will be used for the next 10 years. In June this year, the Office of the Deputy Premier, Ministry Of Infrastructure, Housing, Planning and Development commissioned an international planning and urban design consultancy firm to draft the ten year plan. That firm is EDSA, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The plan is intended to be a master land use zoning planning tool intended to guide and direct future physical, social and environmental development in the Islands. It will be a strategic planning tool for facilitating and giving directions to decisions, so that it can contribute to economic efficiency and the achievement of social goals and objectives, while preserving the natural environment. Most importantly, the plan will be a strategy for sustainable development that brings together the aspirations and capabilities of the Government, civil society and the private sector to create a vision for the future.
The consultants began work on the plan in late 2019 and made two visits to the Islands in January and February 2020, when meetings were held with key public and private sector stakeholders along with ground trothing exercises. Further visits to the TCI were planned for April, May and June this year to continue work on the plan but the consultants were unable to do so due to the globallyimplemented travel ban. Work on the plan was completed in October. The same month, Cabinet approved the establishment of three committees to oversee and inform the development of a National Physical and Sustainable Development Plan for the TCI. A management committee, a review committee and a technical committee will all work together to ensure the plan is implemented and its work is carried out. Appointed to the management committee are chair Ian Astwood, members Dainer Lightbourne,
Kona Gray, Betsy Fulghum Suiter, Toriano Williams, Reginald Charles, Leonardo A Glasgow and secretary Oswald R Williams. The review committee is composed of the deputy director of planning or designate as chair/ secretary, members Stacy Cox, Albert Higgs, Almaida Wilson, Yvette Cox, Cynclair Musgrove, Theophilus Durham, Tomlinson Skippings, Darry Handfield, Pastor Bryant Cox, Hon. Temard Butterfield, the director of the National Trust and representatives from the electricity and water service providers. And serving on the technical committee are the director of planning, director of DECR, director of tourism, director of public works, director of road safety, director of Crown Land Unit, director of surveys and mapping, director of disaster management and emergency, director of agriculture, director of environmental health, director of housing /estate management and the tourism risk manager.

Charity horse racing night cancelled THE ANNUAL ‘Surf and Turf’ horseracing fundraiser will not be held this year due to restrictions imposed by the Government to stop the spread of Covid-19. Grant Thornton, formerly PwC, and the Turks and Caicos AIDS Awareness Foundation (TCAAF) announced the news in a statement on Monday (November 9). “In the current climate, with restrictions on gatherings, it is unfortunately not feasible to hold
the event,” it read. “The double disappointments of missing out on a highly entertaining evening, as well as not being able to support the TCAAF and the Edward Gartland Youth Centre, are difficult to accept, but we see no alternative. “We are fully committed to bringing the event back next year, and we hope that everyone will be keen to join us.” Last year the event raised $60,000 for the foundation and
its work at the Edward Gartland Youth Centre. “We all know that TCAAF puts the funds from the event to excellent use, and in these trying times the youth centre programmes are more valuable than ever to the youth of the TCI.” Anyone who would like to support the charities directly can contact TCAAF executive director Anansa Jervis on 3334752.

Actors and producers of last year’s ‘best short film’, The Emperor Swims
JaSheika and JaNeika James, twin writers of FOX TV’s hit show Empire
First virtual film festival to be held this Saturday BY OLIVIA ROSE THE TURKS and Caicos International Film Festival (TCIFF) will take the form of a virtual festival this Saturday to mark its one year anniversary. On November 14, 2019, the widely successful festival which spotlighted oceans and the environment took over the island for the first time. The three day event featured the screening of a range of major Hollywood releases, new documentaries and regional films. The inaugural festival was a world class gala event and launched the TCI as a global player in the creative and entertainment industries. With masterclasses, panels, children’s events, galas and red carpets, the film festival created quite a buzz locally and internationally. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a myriad of measures imposed to curb the spread of the virus, organisers decided to postpone this year’s in person event. A virtual festival will take place in the form of a Zoom webinar instead on Saturday from 4pm to 6pm EST with exciting announcements for 2021. Festival chair Karen Whitt told the Weekly News on November 5:
“It’s important to keep the spirit of the festival alive if we are to establish TCI as a nation that welcomes creatives from film, television, and music.” This year’s theme will follow on from last year, ‘Blue and green – The oceans and the environment’. The webinar will feature local filmmaker Dominique Rolle of Caya Hico Media who won ‘best short film’ last year with The Emperor Swims which he produced with LeMens Welch. And there will be a painting reveal by renowned TCI-born artist Bradley Theodore who now lives in New York. JaSheika and JaNeika James, twin writers of FOX TV’s hit show Empire, will also share their Hollywood journey with participants. The pair graduated with Bachelor’s degrees in Telecommunication from the University of Florida’s College of Journalism before pursuing careers in film and television. The celebrated authors are now committed to creating, developing, and writing projects that enlighten, inspire and entertain audiences around the world. In July, in a Facebook video announcing the postponement of the event Whitt said the 2021 film festival will be bigger and better as organisers are working to expand

“As chairman of the event I can speak on behalf of everyone on the film festival committee in expressing our enthusiasm as we look to return in 2021with a robust and exciting event set to build upon the incredible foundation that was launched with our inaugural festival in 2019. “We are also disappointed that this year’s event won’t be possible
but we are also encouraged as we see the islands and the Caribbean region coming together in unbelievable ways, this is a true test of the resilience of our communities.” Festival director Colin Burrows explained that a lot of work went into hosting the inaugural event. He said: “It took us 12 months to bring the festival to fruition last year and we simply don’t have the
time and resources to do it this year the way we want, so we are going to postpone it.” In 2021 the festival will look to include a broader range of arts such as music, theatre, and dance in an effort to showcase the islands as a centre of excellence for creativity. The annual Remembrance Day ceremony in Providenciales
Grand Turk, the Remembrance Day service will be held at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Front Street
Remembrance Day services held in Providenciales and Grand Turk FOR the first time, the recently established TCI Regiment joined uniformed groups in laying wreaths during the annual Remembrance Day ceremony in Providenciales. Services were held in the TCI on Sunday (November 8) to remember allied, Commonwealth and British personnel who fought in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts. The Providenciales Remembrance Day service was held at St Monica’s Anglican Church on Leeward Highway from 11am. Premier Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, Leader of the Opposition Washington Misick, Governor Nigel Dakin and Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting laid wreaths.
Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Innis Grant, Officer DaSilva, the TCI Cadets and Royal Marines officers laid the wreath on behalf of the TCI Regiment. Organisations also laying wreaths included the TCIG Medical Department, the Guides, Rotary International, Soroptimists International and the Red Cross. In an Instagram post following the event, Governor Nigel Dakin said: “It was a tremendously important and quite moving day for the TCI. “For the first time members of the TCI Regiment were on parade – stood next to royal Marines and British Army.” He added: “It felt – because it was – a moment of national unity
around a period of reflection about others’ sacrifice on our behalf.” In Grand Turk, the Remembrance Day service was held at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral on Front Street at 9am. Acting Governor Anya Williams laid a wreath at the war memorial. Immediately following the service, all uniform groups attended an ecumenical service at the Methodist Church. In a press release on November 3, acting Governor Anya Williams said: “More than a hundred years ago the world came together in the defence of freedom from tyranny. “This action confirmed that even in the darkest of times we can still find light in the darkness when we remember our collective humanity.
“Remembrance Day is a promise to every generation that we will never forget the ravages and real human cost of war; and in this promise we remember and honour those in the armed forces, and those in civilian life, who have made the ultimate sacrifice and continue to make it their personal responsibility to ensure mankind never falls into such darkness again. “This Remembrance Sunday, the Turks and Caicos Islands will once again commemorate allied, British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who have fought and continues to fight in conflict since the first World War. “We must all be inspired by their service, bravery and their sacrifice.
We must never forget!” Remembrance Day, known informally as Poppy Day owing to the tradition of the red remembrance poppy, is a memorial day observed throughout the Commonwealth. It has been held since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. The poppy has come to represent the immeasurable sacrifice made by those who serve. Remembrance Day evolved out of Armistice Day, which commemorated the signing of the Armistice between Germany and the Entente. Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

THE SALT CAY NOTE
Too much of a good thing, as some Salt Cay roads become impassable
After months of extremely dry conditions, Salt Cay finally saw some long overdue rain
Dipsticks, deluges and democracy A week of rain, rain and more rain and a US election of historic proportions IT IS odd, isn’t it? Just like those times when one goes to the dentist and the pain subsides, the car miraculously starts as soon as the repair mechanic makes an appearance and, this week, Salt Cay saw record amounts of rainfall, following months of extremely dry conditions at the very moment when its reverse osmosis plant sprang back into action! I remember similar situations in Provo back in the 1990s, holding out as long as one could before ordering a truckload of water, and as soon as that truck rolled back down the hill the heavens would open up. The house I currently live in comes not only with a fairly large cistern but also with a dipstick for checking the water level. Checking the level after a heavy downpour is a strangely satisfying experience, especially when recording well over an additional foot of H2O. I hasten to add that we have reached a point in Salt Cay when too much of a good thing is, well, too much of a good thing, as some roads become impassable and one has to wade through a foot of water to get home. Still, no one’s complaining, so thanks to hurricane Eta for sending rain our way.
BY TITUS DE BOER
Titus de Boer was born in Hamburg and spent his formative years in the West Indies. After a formal education in Germany and subsequent training as a journalist, he moved to the TCI in 1989. Titus’ Salt Cay stories and photographs can be found on www.saltcaynote.com
Apart from the rain, the other main story of the week was, beyond a doubt, the election in the United States of America. As I write these lines, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been declared winners, while the incumbent occupant of the White House has yet to concede, vowing to challenge the election outcome in the courts for as long as possible. That is his good right, although it would
appear that around the globe and, of course, in many parts of the US the election result has been accepted as a fait accompli. I am not American nor do I have any desire to live in the United States any time soon and therefore my personal opinion or indeed preferences in this contest are of little or no consequence. Of course, the American presidency does have global ramifications that, to a degree, affect even the TCI, many of whose citizens also hold US citizenship. But again, this does not apply to me, and so I will try to be as objective an observer as I can, a role I have actually enjoyed right here on Salt Cay. A large percentage of our ‘winter residents’ on Salt Cay are Americans, and it has been fascinating to hear of their reactions to events in their country over the past four years and yes, to take note of their political preferences. Of the American winter residents, I know 18 of them well enough to have had exchanges that went beyond wishing each other a ‘good morning’. Roughly 40 percent of the US citizens I know on Salt Cay are openly supportive of their current commander-in-chief. Fifty percent are not. One or two of my American Salt Cay associates are what I would call ‘pocket book’ supporters of the outgoing
president, who, while not enamoured with his rhetoric, tweets or behaviour patterns felt that: “He’s been good for the stock market and my 401K, so I’ll keep voting for him.” Emails I received from Salt Cay Americans in the aftermath of the election also reflect the diverse opinions of our US winter residents rather well, and I quote: “Well, things are looking up kind of - around here. “It’s going to get extremely ugly before it gets regular ugly and then, hopefully, by mid-January it will be a nightmare we can put behind us,” wrote one. While another noted: “We expect and declare our president WILL win here soon. The democrats are trying to cheat per usual, with fraudulent ballot harvesting.” In the end, whether in the US or any other democracy for that matter, elections, governments, premiers and presidents, come and go and ordinary people will continue to simply get on with it - and each other. And that is my sincere hope for our American friends, as we observe the events of the coming weeks and months unfolding. As for the ‘big picture’, I’ll conclude with a quote from America’s third president, Thomas Jefferson, who aptly noted: “The government you elect, is the government you deserve.”

Le jardin des parfums WE HAVE many senses. When we meet someone, or go in a place for the first time, many of our senses are awakened. I love walking and enjoy aromatherapy gardens. You may want to consider adding some fragrant plants to your porch or in your landscape. They come in different flower colours, intensity of fragrance and blooming seasons. Here are just a few to choose from to make your garden more elegant: Sweet acacia (Acacia farnesiana) is one of our native trees that is very fragrant and produces small, yellow, pompom flowers. It grows 15 to 25 foot tall with a 15 to 25 foot spread. The flowers are produced year-round and this tree prefers a location in full sun. Sweet acacia is a slow growing tree and it does have thorns. Night blooming jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum) has a very strong fragrance and it might be best to have just one per yard (or neighbourhood) and have it somewhat away from the house. The white flowers are produced at intervals all year long. This plant will also grow five to eight foot tall and wide.

Find a location that receives full sun or partial shade for this plant. Fiddlewood (Citharezylum fruiticosum) is one of my favourite native plants that produces very fragrant white flowers from the spring through the fall. This plant can get eight to 10 foot tall with a six to eight foot spread. Find a location that receives full sun to partial shade and if you live on the beach that’s okay as it has high salt spray tolerance. Fiddlewood has high drought tolerance and it prefers alkaline soils. This shrub will also attract birds to your landscape. Although it is a native plant, you can find this plant from time to time at the sunshine nursery. Angelwing jasmine (Jasminum nitidum) is a fast-growing shrub that can reach heights of four to six foot and a spread of six to 10 foot. The white flowers are produced from the spring through the fall and have a light fragrance. Plant in a location that receives full sun or partial shade. Rangoon creeper (was Quisqualis indica but now it’s
Combretum indicum) is a large growing shrubby vine that produces star-shaped flowers that come in a variety of colours ranging from white to deep red. The flowers, when they first open, are white then they turn to pink and then finally red. The fragrance is sweet and fruity and will certainly get your attention if you get a whiff. The foliage is also an attractive glossy, deep green. This vine can get quite tall and even climb up into trees, if allowed. Confederate jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is an evergreen. The fragrance is very strong and the white flowers are quite attractive. This vine will also climb high into trees, so beware. You also have the frangipani, citrus, crinum, ginger, seven year apple (native small tree), heliconia, cardboard palm, gardenia and stephanotis. “No elegance is possible without perfume. It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory.” - Coco Chanel.

British Overseas Territories can get Covid-19 as early as next month A VACCINE for Covid-19 could be available to Bermuda and other British Overseas Territories as early as next month, the health minister has revealed. Kim Wilson said the UK had pledged to share some of its stock of vaccinations for the illness with its Overseas Territories when they became available. She added the health ministry was also looking at securing vaccines from the Covax centre through the Pan-American Health Organisation. Ms Wilson said that would mean enough doses for 25 per cent of the population at first. She said on Tuesday that when a vaccine became available for the coronavirus, healthcare workers and the island’s most vulnerable would take priority. Ms Wilson said the Government would not make vaccination mandatory and that no decision had been made on a price for the jab. She added: “We will be required to wear masks, physically distance and the like for a considerable amount of time.” Ms Wilson said there had been a delay in stocking up on flu shots, caused by a temporary halt to British Airways flights imposed this week

as part on an English Covid-19 lockdown. Ms Wilson added no increase in flu cases had been reported to her. Walk-in flu vaccinations have been cancelled at Hamilton Health Centre while a shipment of flu shots from the UK was rerouted. But Ms Wilson told the public that they could still get the vaccine from their general practitioners. She added that the Bermuda
Health Plan, promised in the Throne Speech on Friday, would help with the “economic shock” caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Ms Wilson said: “This government believes that Bermuda must have a holistic healthcare system that prioritises prevention, chronic disease management and healthcare delivery via primary healthcare with a restructuring of the health-system financing.”
Hayward: Long term residents to be required to invest in Bermuda PLANS to offer long term residency for investors in Bermuda will not equate to cash for citizenship, Jason Hayward, the labour minister, said on Wednesday afternoon. Mr Hayward was speaking on the Government’s plans to revise the long-term residential certificate policy, announced in the Throne Speech on Friday. He said the existing policy “does not service in the best interests of the Bermudian people”. Mr Hayward said the plan, promised for this parliamentary year, would require people who were granted the right to live in Bermuda to make economic investments in the island, or to invest in the planned Bermuda Trust Fund. He added: “Right now, if one wants to obtain residency, they must demonstrate that they have substantive means – but the holder of an account overseas never invests in the Bermuda economy. “What we are saying is the economic investment should be placed in the Bermuda economy, for the person to reside in Bermuda on an ongoing basis.” The Progressive Labour Party

DEPUTY Prime Minister Peter Turnquest is disappointed by Scotiabank’s decision to close branches at several islands and says the move would bring “hardship” for residents. While the decision would most likely affect vulnerable communities from a financial inclusion standpoint, the Finance Minister said the government could not force any bank to remain in The Bahamas. Scotiabank has said the decision came as 90 percent of its transactions were now done digitally. However, Mr Turnquest said while this may be true in New Providence and Grand Bahama, it was likely “less true” for the Family Islands. “We take note of the hardship that this lack of a banking presence has on these now vulnerable communities from a financial inclusion point of view,” the East Grand Bahama MP told Parliament this week. He was leading debate on the Financial and Corporate Service Providers Bill 2020 along with the Digital Assets and Registered Exchange Bill 2020, which are being debated as a compendium. Both bills passed in the House of Assembly on Wednesday. “First, let me say that the government of the Bahamas nor the Central Bank of the Bahamas can force any financial institution - international or domestic - to maintain a physical branch presence in any location. “That is a business decision that is made by the banks and in respect to the international banks oftentimes it’s not even a local management decision, but a head office decision made somewhere else based upon an objective review of its business performance. “We are not as a country of the practice of dictating to any financial institution how or where they should be conducting their business. Our obligation is to make sure the financial system of this country is sound and secure, well regulated. That the norms and best practices are
being observed and that our people as a whole can count on safety and confidence that the financial services system is well regulated. “That said we are obviously disappointed that that action has been taken and you would recall a few years ago a similar action had been taken by another financial institution, which left Bimini and South Andros without banking services. Again, we regret these things, but we also understand from a business perspective what’s driving them.” He continued: “In the case of the current closures, the institution has indicated that 90 percent of their business is being transacted digitally. That is either online or using an ATM. Now, some of us may or may not believe that, I don’t know. “I am confident from where I stand that that is true in New Providence. It may even be true in Grand Bahama. It may be less true in the Family Islands.” When he spoke on the matter, Exuma and Ragged Island MP Chester Cooper urged the government to do more, noting some of his constituents had been with the bank since 1968. Mr Cooper told Parliament he understood the bank’s profit imperative, but the government should have done more on behalf of Bahamians. He said: “I want to reiterate my disappointment in the recent announcement by Scotiabank that they will close their branch in Exuma and other Family Islands. As a businessman, I understand their profit imperative. However, I have told the bank that as an MP, I am not a happy man today. “The constituents of Exuma have been members and clients of this institution, loyally so since 1968, for more than five decades. “For the record we believe that it’s the government’s job to negotiate on behalf of the people and we have no way at this stage of being satisfied that adequate efforts were made on behalf of these islands.”

Many persons in the Caribbean are optimistic of a Biden-Harris government. The formation of Tropical Storm Theta pushed the 2020 hurricane season to a record-breaking 29 named storms.
The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially has the most named storms on record THE National Hurricane Center named Tropical Storm Theta early on Tuesday, pushing the 2020 hurricane season to a record-breaking 29 named storms. But the season has three weeks left, and another storm is brewing in the Caribbean that could be big enough to name by this weekend, meteorologist Matthew Cappucci reports for the Washington Post. Many people have been watching this hurricane season closely since the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration initially predicted in May that it would be busy. Early estimates predicted up to 19 named storms, and in August NOAA revised their estimate to 25 storms. This summer saw many of the earliest named storms, and by September, the National Hurricane Center ran out of their planned names and began referring to storms
as Greek letters. The last record holding year, 2005 saw 28 named storms, including eight major hurricanes. Three of those, including Hurricane Katrina, reached Category 5 windspeeds. While this year has seen more named storms total, only five have become major hurricanes, and of those, only Laura and Eta made landfall as Category 4 storms, Curtis Segarra reports for Science News. Meteorologists point to the rise of more sensitive technology that has allowed observers to spot more of the powerful storms in the middle of the Atlantic, even those that don’t make landfall. “When one wants to do a fair comparison of storms now versus storms in the past, you really have to be careful about how to interpret the raw number,” says Christopher Landsea, chief of the tropical analysis
and forecast branch at the National Hurricane Center, to the New York Times’ Maria Cramer. “There has been a lot of hype about the record number of storms and, yes, it’s been a busy year. There have been horrific impacts. But is this really a record? The answer is no.” This year has had a terrible impact on communities on the Louisiana coast, where five storms have made landfall this year. That’s also a new record, one more than in 2002, when four named storms barreled through the same region. Tropical Storm Theta is not headed toward the United States. It formed in the eastern Atlantic and it’s moving further east. The storm might weaken or stall in its path in the next few days, but by this weekend, it might hit the Madeira Islands, an autonomous region of Portugal, per the Washington Post.
What a Biden-Harris win means for Jamaica and the Caribbean WHILE there will be considerable euphoria and pride in a Joe BidenKamala Harris win in the US presidential race, Jamaica-born New York-based political scientist, Diana Cassells, is cautioning Jamaica and the Caribbean about their expectations at this time. Cassells, in her analysis of the US election, and what the win means for Jamaica and the Caribbean, said at this moment, things on the ground in the United States will take up the bulk of the attention of the new administration. “We have a series of crises – the COVID crisis, unemployment, student loan, housing – and so a lot of attention will be on bread-andbutter domestic issues as a priority,” she shared with The Sunday Gleaner. “But I believe that tempering the overarching sort of security crisis, where people of the Caribbean and people of colour live in communities that are over-policed and lacking resources, I do hope, and I am optimistic, that a progressive BidenHarris administration will begin to address those issues.”
Cassells also hopes that the duo that trounced the controversial Donald Trump at the polls, making history in the process and earning the largest number of votes in a national election, will make good on their plan for immigration reform. She said, “Because it would lead to some positive net effect for people from the region, who have been in immigration limbo, whether it is DACA, or part of an older migration, where people are yet to adjust their status, so that they can begin to make meaningful calculated contribution to the country they have chosen to migrate to.” Cassells is suggesting that the number of undocumented Caribbean nationals can only benefit if they are brought out of the shadows. For her, they become new voters, and active participants in American life. More important, it increases their earning potential, because not having to work in the shadows frees them up to take advantage of job opportunities that are foreclosed to them at this point.
Bahamas: Immigration Bill being reviewed
Financial Services, Trade and Industry and Immigration Minister Elsworth Johnson.
IMMIGRATION Minister Elsworth Johnson said yesterday the government is reviewing the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Bill – newly proposed legislation that if passed could spark changes to the country’s immigration laws. Speaking to reporters outside Cabinet, the minister said once the final assessments have been made the Bill will then be tabled in the House of Assembly for debate. However, he did not give a timeline as to when the review will be concluded nor when the bill will be presented to Parliament. He said: “Well, what we’re doing now is we’re feverishly going through the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act. As a matter of fact, I spoke to the Attorney General and so we’re trying to wrap that up so we can come to the completion and have
that bill laid in the House. “… We’re working hard to complete that process so that women are able to pass on their citizenship and it represents a lot of things in that bill. So, if you don’t make an application within the required time, then something else will happen. You may be able to get another designation. “But I want to commend Dame (Anita) Allen and the drafting department for all that they have done and we’re properly considering every suggestion that’s been made and very shortly, I will be able to say to the Prime Minister – and Mr Brent Symonette in what he has done in pushing this – I will be able to say that we can have a debate.” The Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Bill, which was drafted by the Law Reform Commission, aims
to replace the Bahamas Nationality Act and Immigration Act. The proposed legislation proposes to address the longstanding problem of statelessness in the country and the issue on whether Bahamian women will have the right to pass on citizenship. Provisions under the bill will allow for individuals — born outside of the Bahamas to a Bahamian mother and born inside the Bahamas to two non-Bahamian parents — the “right of abode” or the right to live in the Bahamas while a minor, up to the age of 18. Regarding those children born to two non-Bahamian parents, they will be given an opportunity to apply for a resident belonger’s permit if they are in the custody and care of a parent or guardian who has the right to live in the Bahamas.

Although President Trump has not conceded, the general consensus is that Joe Biden would become the next US President.
A growing chorus of GOP senators wants Trump to allow the Biden transition to start ONLY a handful of Senate Republicans have publicly congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on his victory, but a larger group is starting to get uncomfortable with the Trump administration’s refusal to start the legal transition process, including giving Biden access to government officials and documents and allowing him to receive the classified President’s Daily Brief intelligence report. “If that’s not occurring by Friday, I will step in,” Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) told KRMG radio in Tulsa on Wednesday. Lankford said he has “already started engaging in this area” and predicted General Services Administration head Emily Murphy will soon sign off on the transition process. If not, he added, he will “push them and say, ‘This needs to occur,’ so that regardless of the
outcome of the election, whichever way that it goes, people can be ready for that actual task.” Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 on Monday that “we’re on a path it looks likely Joe Biden is going to be the next president of the United States,” adding that “it’s not 100% certain but it is quite likely” and “so I think a transition process ought to begin.” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Tuesday that Trump can continue his legal challenge but we “need to have that contingency in place,” and Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said the transition process should “move forward.” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who has congratulated Biden on his win, told NBC News “it’s very much in our national interest, in our foreign policy interest, national security interest,” to have a smooth transition transfer of power.
Nelson Mandela created The Elders group of world leaders in 2007.
Former world leaders denounce Trump’s refusal to concede A GROUP of former world leaders founded by South African civil rights hero Nelson Mandela has condemned Donald Trump for refusing to admit defeat, saying it is “putting at risk the functioning of American democracy”. The Elders, created by the former South African president in 2007, said Trump’s claims of electoral fraud had been made “as yet without any compelling
evidence”. “Continued baseless accusations of subversion risk further deepening the instability and polarisation in American society, and eroding public faith in institutions that is the bedrock of democratic life,” their statement reads. The group’s chair, former Irish president Mary Robinson, called on the Republican Party to “affirm their faith” in US
democracy and accept Joe Biden’s victory. “It is shocking to have to raise concerns about US democratic processes as The Elders have previously commented on volatile and undemocratic situations in states such as Kenya, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe,” she wrote. “President Trump’s refusal thus far to facilitate a smooth transition weakens democratic values.” (BBC)
Top Boris Johnson aide quits amid infighting at No 10 ONE of Boris Johnson’s closest aides, director of communications Lee Cain, has resigned amid reports of internal tensions in Downing Street. He will leave next month, despite being offered a promotion to chief of staff. His departure prompted speculation about the future of the PM’s chief adviser Dominic Cummings, but the BBC was told he would stay for now. No 10 denied Mr Johnson had been distracted by the saga, saying he was “fully focussed” on tackling Covid. Mr Cain has been at the PM’s side since he was a press officer for the Vote Leave campaign under Mr Cummings. Many will not have heard of him before the story broke, but his resignation comes at a time when the government is facing big decisions over its coronavirus strategy and the future of post-Brexit trade with the EU.
Lee Cain arrived for work on Thursday, having already handed in his notice to No 10.
After a number of rows and U-turns within government in recent months, No 10 will see communications as key in connecting with the country and trying to gain support for its decisions. The news that Mr Cain - who worked with Mr Cummings and the
PM in the Vote Leave campaign to get Britain out of the EU - could become Mr Johnson’s chief of staff had led to consternation among some MPs and ministers, said BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg. One Tory source even suggested that Mr Johnson’s fiancee,
Carrie Symonds - a former head of communications for the Conservatives - had misgivings about that plan. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer told LBC Radio: “This is pathetic. I think millions of people will be waking up this morning, scratching their heads, saying what on earth is going on? “We’re in the middle of a pandemic, we’re all worried about our health and our families, we’re all worried about our jobs, and this lot are squabbling behind the door of No 10. Pull yourselves together, focus on the job in hand.” But the PM’s spokesman said Mr Johnson was concentrating on fighting coronavirus, adding: “You can see the progress we are making, in terms of rolling out mass testing, in securing vaccines and also in terms of making improvements to test and trace.” Allies of Mr Cain were unhappy about how he had been treated, which prompted initial speculation
about Mr Cummings’s own future. Mr Cummings and Mr Cain are long-time colleagues, having worked together on the Leave campaign during the EU referendum. Mr Cain, who is set to step down next month, will be replaced as the director of communications by James Slack - a former journalist and one of the PM’s spokesmen. Mr Johnson is thought to be looking to fill the post of chief of staff as part of a wider reorganisation, which will also see ex-BBC journalist Allegra Stratton take on a role fronting new daily televised press briefings. In his resignation statement, Mr Cain said it had been a privilege to work for Mr Johnson, but he added: “After careful consideration I have this evening resigned as No 10 director of communications and will leave the post at the end of the year. In response, Mr Johnson thanked Mr Cain for his “extraordinary service” to him, calling him a “true ally and friend”.

Several killed and 180,000 evacuated as Typhoon Vamco hits the Philippines AT LEAST six people have died and 10 others are missing after Typhoon Vamco made landfall in the Philippines on Wednesday night, according to a report by CNN affiliate CNN Philippines. Citing national police, CNN Philippines reported a 68-year-old and 70-year-old were among those killed. More than 180,000 people were evacuated as the typhoon battered the country, hitting many of the same communities that were devastated by Super Typhoon Goni just 10 days before. Typhoon Vamco, referred to as Ulysses in the Philippines, is equivalent in force to a Category 2 hurricane, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical
Services Administration (PAGASA). It made its first landfall at 11 p.m. local time near Patnanungan, Quezon, then continued moving westward, making a second landfall in Luzon. According to PAGASA, the storm has caused flooding and two to three meters of storm surge. The agency warned the rains could cause landslides. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the impact of the storm in central Luzon is particularly damaging because it is hitting the same 1.6 million people affected by Super Typhoon Goni. Vamco is the fifth storm to impact the Philippines in just over three weeks. “The Red Cross holds particularly grave concerns for more than

240,000 people who lost their homes to Typhoon Goni, especially those who are living in makeshift shelters along the coast as this latest storm hits,” the organization said in a statement, adding that the situation is particularly dire because local government emergency response funds have been depleted by the
coronavirus pandemic. Scientists are warning that climate change is making storms like this more destructive. A study published in May said it was becoming increasingly evident that hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical cyclones worldwide are becoming stronger and potentially more deadly as the
globe warms due to the climate crisis. “These non-stop storms are slamming our communities during a deadly pandemic, making this one of the most complicated disaster responses ever,” Richard Gordon, Philippine Red Cross chairman, said in a statement.

Bernie Sanders says he would accept Labor secretary job if Joe Biden asks VERMONT Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday that he would accept the job of Labor secretary if President-elect Joe Biden asked him to join his Cabinet. “If I had a portfolio that allowed me to stand up and fight for working families, would I do it?” Sanders told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “Yes, I would.” Asked if it is true that he is eying the position of Labor secretary, Sanders said, “What’s true is I want to do everything I can to protect the working families of this country who are under tremendous duress right now.” “Whether that’s in the Senate, whether that’s in the Biden administration, who knows,” Sanders added. “Well, let’s see how
that unfolds.” CNN reported Tuesday that Sanders has started to ramp up a campaign to become Labor secretary in Biden’s Cabinet and is seeking the support of top labor leaders. Sanders’ push comes amid intensified jockeying over the powerful Cabinet position from inside the labor movement. A longtime senior labor leader told CNN on Tuesday that Sanders has personally called union chiefs asking for their backing, but that his overtures have been met with mixed reactions. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, who is among those Sanders has contacted, favors Boston Mayor Marty Walsh for the job, the senior labor leader said. Meanwhile, Michigan Rep. Andy
Levin, a Democrat who is a popular progressive, has also built a base of support among union leadership, including the Communications Workers of America, the senior labor leader said. In public statements and in an interview with CNN before the election, Sanders spoke about his desire to lead a push from inside the Senate to send an ambitious suite of progressive legislation to Biden’s desk. But those plans may have been complicated by the uncertainty surrounding control of the body, after a disappointing election night for Democratic Senate challengers. The caucus will likely need to win both of the January run-off contests in Georgia now to gain a majority.
Bernie Sanders is very popular with Democrats supporters.
About 370,000 people in Brazil – a country of about 210 million – are modern-day slaves, according to the Global Slavery Index by the Australian human rights group Walk Free Foundation.
Slaves rescued from illegal gold mine run by blacklisted Brazilian THE rescue of 39 slaves from an illegal gold mine in Brazil run by a known offender highlights the difficulty in ending crimes where large profits are involved, labour authorities said. Labour inspector Magno Riga said a team raided a mining operation this month run by Raimunda Oliveira Nunes – who is on Brazil’s “dirty list” of people engaged in slave labour – where workers lived in open sheds and without drinking water. It was the third raid on an illegal mining operation run by Nunes – this time with two relatives in the northern state of Para – and her methods of disguising her crimes were becoming increasingly sophisticated, Riga said. The Thomson Reuters Foundation was unable to locate contact details for Nunes to seek comment. Riga said the Labour Inspector’s Office
had also been unable to find her. “They attempted to hide what was happening,” Riga said, describing how a workers’ cooperative was being set up so that the miners would appear to be self-employed, rather than having an employer who would be liable for their working conditions. Nunes was set to become the president of the workers’ cooperative and her sons its directors, Riga said. Nunes was found guilty of enslaving workers in 2018 and received a sentence of five years in prison, but she has not been jailed and is appealing the ruling, Riga said. Miss USA 2020 is the first Black woman to represent Mississippi
Asya Branch was in disbelief when she was crowned Miss USA 2020, asking herself afterward, “What just happened?”
Alex Trebek was the face of Jeopardy for 36 years.
THE first Black woman to be crowned Miss Mississippi USA is now the reigning Miss USA. Asya Branch, a student at the University of Mississippi and Booneville native, was crowned Miss USA on Monday, after the coronavirus pandemic delayed the event by several months. She’ll go on to represent the US in the Miss Universe pageant. Branch shared her historic win with Miss Teen USA 2020 Ki’ilani Arruda, only the second Hawaiian woman to win the teen pageant. From the stage at Graceland Exhibition Center in Memphis, Tennessee, Branch fielded questions about how to mend the polarized country (restore trust in institutions
like the media and government, she said) and gun laws (her family owns guns, she said, but more people should learn how to use them safely before they get their permits). In an interview with Miss Mississippi USA, Branch revealed her father was incarcerated for 10 years. His experience inspired her to advocate for criminal justice reform, and in 2018 she met with President Donald Trump and other officials to discuss measures to help reintegrate former prisoners into society upon their release. “I learned a lot about myself, but at the same time, while sharing my story and going through so much but not letting it stop me, I’ve been able to heal while also helping others find their way,”
she said in the September interview. The pageant was originally scheduled for spring 2020 but, like many other large-scale events around that time, was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Picking up production this fall, the Miss Universe Organization that runs Miss USA followed some coronavirus protocols: Contestants wore bejeweled masks when they were offstage and when they visited landmarks like the National Civil Rights Museum, and audience members at Graceland were told to wear masks indoors and submit to temperature checks, according to the facility. Graceland didn’t mention social distancing within the facility in its Covid-19 protocols.

‘Jeopardy!’ pays tribute to Alex Trebek THE “Jeopardy!” episode that aired the day after Alex Trebek died opened with an emotional tribute to the host. Trebek died Sunday at the age of 80 after battling pancreatic cancer. On Monday’s episode, executive producer Mike Richards had some heartfelt words about its “beloved” host. “This is an enormous loss, for our staff, crew, for his family, for his millions of fans,” Richards said. “(Trebek) loved this show, and everything it stood for. In fact, he taped his final episodes less than
two weeks ago. He will forever be an inspiration for his constant desire to learn, his kindness and for his love of his family.” Richards said Trebek’s final 35 episodes will be aired, adding “That’s what he wanted.” “Jeopardy!” has not announced a new host. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a leading pancreatic cancer nonprofit organization, announced that it has seen a 450% increase in web traffic and more than $55,000 in donations since Trebek’s death. Davis on Hollywood equality: ‘I expect to get the same filet mignon that white actresses get’ EVEN one of Hollywood’s most award-winning actresses still has to fight for pay equality. Oscar, Emmy and two-time Tony Award winner Viola Davis does not mince words when it comes to the disparity Black actresses face in the industry. “Here’s my big thing, and people in Hollywood know this: I have great agents; I love them,” Davis said in a cover story for InStyle magazine’s December issue. “But I say this to them all the time, I say, ‘I want and I expect to get the same filet mignon that white actresses get. Cooked at the exact temperature.” “You cannot throw me a bone with a really nice little piece of meat still on it and expect that’s good enough for me,” the “How to Get Away with Murder” star quipped, adding.

Greg Clarke: Former FA chairman resigns as Fifa vice-president
Ronaldo heads in for Portugal against Andorra.
Cristiano Ronaldo edges closer to international goalscoring record CRISTIANO Ronaldo is now just seven goals away from equaling the international goalscoring record after netting in Portugal’s 7-0 thrashing of Andorra. Ronaldo came on as a secondhalf substitute and scored his 102nd international goal in Wednesday’s friendly as he continues to edge towards the record held by Iran’s Ali Daei. Elsewhere in Wednesday’s games, Croatia captain Domagoj Vida was substituted after his team was made
aware of a positive Covid-19 test, while World Cup winner France was surprisingly beaten by Finland. Goals from Pedro Neto, Paulinho (two), Renato Sanches, Joao Felix, Ronaldo and own goal from Emili Garcia handed Portugal a convincing victory. A far-post header late on in the second-half means Ronaldo has now scored 50 goals in 50 games for Portugal since turning 30. Before 30, he had 52 goals in 118 games. The most surprising result on
Wednesday was France’s 2-0 defeat by Finland, a nation 53 places behind the world champion in the FIFA rankings. Debutantes Marcus Forss and Onni Valakari both scored first-half goals in Paris against a French team that featured Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and N’Golo Kanté. Griezmann, Kante and Manchester United striker Anthony Martial were all introduced in the second half but France, despite dominating possession, was unable to mount a comeback.
PUBLIC NOTICE
FORMER Football Association chairman Greg Clarke has stood down as vice-president of Fifa. Clarke left his job as head of the FA on Tuesday after using “unacceptable” language when referring to black players. He had intended to continue in his position as Uefa’s representative on the Fifa Council but has now resigned. The decision comes after a phone call between Clarke and Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin. Clarke used an offensive term in reference to black players when he appeared in front of a UK government select committee. He was also criticised for comments he made referring to gay players making a “life choice”, the
different career choices of people from black and Asian communities, and a coach telling him young female players did not like having the ball hit hard at them. Clarke was elected as a vicepresident of football’s world governing body in February 2019. On Wednesday he told BBC Sport he would stay on in that role until March 2021 at the request of Ceferin, in order to protect the European governing body’s voting rights until then. However, following a further call with Ceferin, he has now resigned. Uefa will appoint an interim replacement, likely to be from the home nations, to attend Fifa’s next meeting before naming a full-time replacement in March. (BBC)

Maradona, who led his country to World Cup triumph in 1986, had a successful operation for a blood clot on the brain earlier in November.
Maradona to be treated for alcohol dependency after leaving hospital ARGENTINA legend Diego Maradona was discharged from hospital on Wednesday and taken to a recovery clinic to be treated for alcohol dependency. Maradona, who led his country to World Cup triumph in 1986, had a successful operation for a blood clot on the brain earlier in November. However, alcohol withdrawal symptoms kept him in hospital for longer. “The good thing is that Diego is
together, Diego is solid,” his lawyer, Matias Morla, said. Maradona was admitted to the Ipensa clinic in Buenos Aires last week with anaemia and dehydration. Only a few close friends will be allowed to visit the 60-year-old at the rehabilitation clinic. “Diego has gone through maybe the most difficult moment of his life and I think it was a miracle that they found this bleeding in his brain that could have cost him his life,” his lawyer added. Groenewegen (center) and fellow riders collide during the opening stage of the Tour of Poland.
Cyclist Dylan Groenewegen given nine-month suspension after Tour of Poland horror crash DUTCH cyclist Dylan Groenewegen has been suspended for nine months following a horrific crash in the Tour of Poland earlier this year. Groenewegen drifted into the path of fellow rider Fabio Jakobsen at the end of the first stage of the race in August, causing Jakobsen to collide with a barrier. According to his DeceuninckQuickStep team, Jakobsen -- who was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent facial surgery after the crash -- faces a “long and arduous” recovery. “It was a crash where the severity of the consequences was
unfathomable,” said Richard Plugge, director of Groenewegen’s JumboVisma team. “Now that the disciplinary case has been concluded, we can start looking forward again. We will do that together with Dylan. “We are relieved that there is now perspective and clarity. We wish Fabio Jakobsen the same. The encouraging reports about his recovery do us good.” Groenewegen’s suspension dates back to the Tour of Poland incident, meaning he will be clear to race again on May 7 next year. “The crash ... will forever be a
black page in my career,” said the 27-year-old. “During the sprint I deviated from my line. I am sorry, because I want to be a fair sprinter. The consequences were very unfortunate and serious. “I am very aware of that and I hope this has been a wise lesson for every sprinter. I follow the news of Fabio’s recovery very closely. I can only hope that one day he will return completely. “Closing the disciplinary matter creates clarity. That gives me the opportunity to look ahead again. I am happy about that, even though May 7 is still far away.
Lewis Hamilton ‘much prouder’ of equality action than potential seventh F1 world title LEWIS Hamilton says he is “much prouder” of the work he has done to promote equality this year than the prospect of winning a seventh title. The Briton will win the championship at Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix if team-mate Valtteri Bottas does not outscore him by more than seven points. Hamilton said: “The drivers’ title doesn’t necessarily impact people’s lives. Trying to improve conditions for people around the world - equal human rights - that’s the most important thing to me.” Hamilton will clinch the championship if he wins or finishes ahead of Bottas. If the Finn wins, Hamilton can still clinch the championship with second place as long as Bottas does not set the fastest lap, which earns a point. A seventh title would put the Mercedes driver equal with all-time record holder Michael Schumacher, whose record of career victories Hamilton has already surpassed. “Matching an icon like Michael; I’d be incredibly proud of that,”
Lewis Hamilton has worn shirts bearing the ‘Black lives matter’ message before and after Formula 1 races this season.
Hamilton said. “But it’s more the message it sends to not just kids but mostly kids that you have to dream bigger than you think you can dream and don’t let anyone tell you you can’t go for that.” However, Hamilton said he had not thought about the prospect of a seventh title, and was “just focused on trying to do a good job, just taking
it one race at a time, trying to do the best we can as a team, not thinking about anything else.” He added: “I have learned not to add pressure that’s unnecessary. I have four races to battle for those points so I don’t put it all onto one weekend, one day. “For me it is another race, I need to approach it exactly as I have in the
past. “Maybe then that’s why sometimes it’s a shock. All of a sudden it hits you because you have not thought about it much and you don’t know what to say, because you never truly know whether it is going to happen. “I am not focused on the ‘what if?’ I am focused on preparing myself the same as before to try to deliver the way I have all season.” But he did give a strong indication that, while he has not yet discussed a new contract with Mercedes to keep him at the team beyond this season, he would continue to race on next year. “The numbers and the figures and the titles and all that stuff perhaps appears to mean more from the outside,” Hamilton said. “I remember watching Michael get seven and thinking: ‘Wow.’ But when you’re in it, it’s different. “We’re going to continue to fight for more championships, continue to try to improve and continue to race and do what we love doing. “What’s important is the journey
this year has been combined with the fight for equality and a real growing process of learning what’s happening around the world and being more aware of surroundings and starting to see progress with that.” With regards to a new contract, Hamilton said he “hadn’t got all the answers to what I want to do yet”. But he added: “I am very conscious of the idea I want to continue with Mercedes. I would love to help them on this quest of pushing for change. “They are taking their cars green, electrifying more, I want to help them on that road, I want to help them pushing for diversity. There is a lot to discuss and a lot to go through but it is something we will do if not after the job is done at the end of the year. “Nothing is set in stone - it is just about talking about it. I don’t feel I’m finished, I don’t feel moving forward… there are always areas to improve. I love racing and the challenge and I don’t think that is going to change any time soon.” (BBC)

One run supporters come from every corner of the globe.
One Run hoping Turks Islanders can compete in global event Runners (at all levels) from the Turks and Caicos are asked to compete in what is dubbed as the first truly global event that the entire world can compete in, the One Run event, which is billed to take place on Human Rights Day— December 10 at 7pm local time. The idea is for persons to run, walk or move their body for one hour, uniting the world to show that love is a fundamental right. In a correspondence from the
organisers of the run, they noted that they have so far attracted participants from 170 different countries, but none from the TCI. “Whether it’s running a 10k in your local park with friends or walking around the dinner table due to lockdown restrictions, everyone is invited,” a release from the body stated. The release added that 2020 has been filled with extraordinary events, stories of inequality,
injustice and hardship so the run will hopefully act as a beacon of hope. “We’re coming together to show the world that love is a human right and no child should be hated for who they are”, explains One Run Co-Founder Danny Bent. “We welcome every country, every age, every ability, every gender, every human with open arms. This isn’t about being fit or getting a personal best. It doesn’t matter if you’ve
never run - what matters is showing up and taking part in whatever way you are able.” The One Run Global Challenge takes place on Human Rights Day - 10th December 7pm-8pm at local time. As participants begin to move in their time zone, the One Run Map will light up, burning bright with a wave of positivity. Backed by a whole host of inspirational individuals such as Tom Daley, Mayim Bialik and Billy Porter.
According the body, they are “also encouraging participants, partners, artists and celebrities to join together and raise funds for causes that stop injustice and inequality against children. Their five charity partners are Unicef, No Bully, NOH8 Campaign, Do Something and Know Your Rights Camp. Anyone can participate. All are welcome.” To register sign up at: https:// onerun.global/take-part/free/.
Farah and Arnold trusted to make right decisions, says British Athletics BRITISH Athletics “trusts” Mo Farah and Hollie Arnold will make the “right decisions” regarding their Tokyo 2020 plans during their stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The duo are part of the line-up for the ITV show, which starts on Sunday. Last year, Farah, 37, revealed his plan to return to the track and bid for a third successive Olympic 10,000m title at the delayed Tokyo Games. Arnold, 26, is looking to defend her Paralympic F46 javelin title in 2021. A representative of Farah has confirmed to BBC Sport that
provisions are in place for antidoping testing to continue as normal during his time on the TV show. Because of coronavirus restrictions, this year’s I’m a Celebrity is taking place at Gwrych Castle in north Wales, rather than the usual Australian jungle location, and will last for three weeks. “I hope by going on the programme, it inspires people,” said Arnold in a statement. “Yes I have a missing arm and I am in the Paralympics, but I want to show people nothing stops me and it shouldn’t stop anyone else either.” British Athletics confirmed that in line with its policy, it will suspend
the APA (athlete personal award) funding for athletes involved in the programme and will reinstate it once they return to full-time training. BBC Sport understands this will only impact Arnold as APAs are means-tested and Farah’s commercial income makes him ineligible. “We trust in them and their support networks to make the right decisions around their preparations before the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics,” said a British Athletics spokesperson. Olympic champions Sam Quek (hockey) and Rebecca Adlington (swimming) have both taken part in the series in recent years, albeit after

announcing their retirements from their respective sports. Both the Olympics and Paralympics, scheduled for last summer, were postponed in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Olympics, which will still be called Tokyo 2020, will be staged from 23 July to 8 August 2021 and the Paralympics will take place from 24 August to 5 September 2021. (BBC)

The TCI national footballers have intensified their preparations for next March’s Qualifiers
National football team set for four-game engagement in Florida IN an effort to warm up for next year’s CONCACAF Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup (Qatar 2022), the Turks and Caicos Senior National Football team will venture into their first set of practice games from next week. According to head coach of the side, Omar Edwards, the team is scheduled to travel next Friday for over a week of football action in Florida. On November 21, they are scheduled to meet Miami, while on November 24 they will tackle Orlando. On November 27, TCI will play a PLC United team, before they challenge an All-Star side on November 28—the day prior to their return. A number of big names have been training on island, since the FA return to the field several weeks ago. That group is expected to join US based footballer and national captain Billy Forbes in the US. Forbes had an amazing run for Austin Bold FC in the United Soccer League this year. He finished as the leading goal scorer for the club.
Billy Forbes (left), who was outstanding in the United Soccer League (USL) for Austin Bold FC, is expected to join the side for the friendlies.
IMPROVEMENT According to Edwards the players at home are also showing improvement. “We have a consistent amount of players in training, a total of 25 on a regular basis. “The players have shown signs of improvement.
They have decided that they want to play a major part in improving the standard of football here.” Edwards noted that he was very happy about the players’ attitudes, their enthusiasm and the progress that they are showing. He noted that the coaching staff would
continue to work daily to improve the unit. Due to the pandemic, the games which were initially scheduled for this October and November will now be played next March. In September this year, Edwards had stated that the move was welcomed. “It’s the best thing to do at this time as many teams are unable to prepare adequately. Indeed, it will be an advantage for all the teams to prepare better. This will ultimately make the football product look better on the field.” When we play next year, we will battle against Central American sides, Nicaragua and Belize along with fellow Caribbean nations, Haiti and St. Lucia. For TCI, Nicaragua and Belize will be new clashes. We played Haiti and St. Lucia before. We went down two games to nil against Haiti and won one and lost the other against St. Lucia. Haiti have a rank of 86th globally, and 10th in CONCACAF. Nicaragua are ranked 151st in the world and 16th in CONCACAF,
while Belize are ranked 170th globally and 23rd in CONCACAF. Just behind them on 24th in CONCACAF are St. Lucia, who have a 176th global ranking. TCI are 203 in the global rankings and 32nd in CONCACAF, they are however ahead of the US Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla in the regional division. At the end of the group stages, the six winners will progress to the second round. There, teams will play home and away in a direct elimination format, with the three winners progressing to the final round. The final round will see those three teams join the CONCACAF member Associations top-five ranked teams consisting of Mexico, United States, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Honduras. The eight teams will play each other home and away, with the topthree finishing teams qualifying directly to the World Cup. The fourth-placed team will qualify for the Intercontinental Play-off, scheduled to be played in June 2022.
