consulted.“Itwas noted that Ms Thomas has a right of appeal against the decision. However, while this decision subsists, its reputational implications on the Office of the DPP, the TCI Public Service and the TCI Bar Association, all of which Ms Thomas was a member, could not permit her to continue in the employment of TCIG as a Prosecutor or as an attorney of the TCI,” Otuonye Accordingly, said. on August 3, Thomas was placed on administrative leave and ceased to perform the functions of her office, save to update, and hand over her case files. The following day, she resigned from the TCI Public Service as a Senior Public Prosecutor with ODPP.Her Excellency, the Deputy Governor Anya Williams accepted that resignation and Thomas’s last day in office was Friday, August 12. Many in the TCI have called into question cases she has prosecuted in the territory, with calls for them to be reviewed to ensure no injustice to any of the defendants in those cases, given her misconduct in Jamaica. However, nothing has been mentioned by the DPP. Allegations against Thomas In 2017, Lowell Spence, who was accused of stealing five million dollars, was charged with money laundering, obtaining money by fraud and conspiracy in 2009. In December 2017, the trial was aborted following issues with witness statements submitted by the prosecution, led by Thomas. Spence’s 2019 complaint stemmed from the prosecutor’s attempt during his trial, to refresh a witness’ memory from a statement. According to media reports out of Jamaica on the case, when asked during the trial if the statement was a replica of the original, Thomas reportedly said yes. However, upon examination of the two documents by the judge, the two statements were not consistent with each other, with several differences between them. During cross-examination by the defendant’s lawyer, Bert Samuels, the witness, Dominic Duval, a bank employee, admitted that he had signed the purported original statement the day before court in November 2017 on the instructions of the head of the bank’s internal investigation unit. The witness said the May 2017 statement submitted to the DPP “is the original statement and that this one was done the day before coming to court”. Duval said he was asked by the bank’s investigator to sign a new statement, which he did, and gave to Thomas.Following this disclosure, in December 2017, Jamaican Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn stepped in and surrendered the eight-year-old fraud case because of prosecutorial misconduct. Thomas is currently awaiting a date to be heard in mitigation before a sanction is imposed upon her by the General Legal Council in Jamaica.

Embattled attorney Sophia Thomas resigned as a Senior Prosecutor one day after her membership to the local bar was revoked and she was placed on administrative leave by the TCI Public Service. Thomas is fighting a verdict by a Jamaican legal disciplinary panel that she intentionally deceived a court of law by producing false evidence during a trial she prosecuted in 2017 in Jamaica.
Following a hearing of the Jamaican disciplinary committee in July, Thomas was found guilty of professional misconduct, and her integrity called into question, causing rippled effects in TCI where she was at the time a member of the local bar and a practicing prosecutor.Thisweek, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Eugene Otuonye Q.C., gave the final decision of his office on the matter.

Paulanjo Gardiner aka ‘Loopi’ was killed last weekend in the South Dock area, after being shot numerous times. The shooting occurred at about 11:45 pm on Friday, August 12, as Gardiner along with female occupants in the car were leaving a location in the Five Cays community in Providenciales. Eyewitness reports are that upon being shot, Gardiner crashed his vehicle into a pole. Police immediately converged on the scene, cordoning off the area. Gardiner was shot several times, resulting in his death, and a woman in the vehicle he was driving also received serious injuries. A murder inquiry has been launched into what the Commissioner of Police, Trevor Botting, is calling a targeted attack. “This appears to be a targeted attack, but detectives are keeping an open mind as to the motive,” the commissioner told the public

Trumped up chargesagendasand While many will see the wisdom in this measure, it is fraught with danger and uncertainties. There are young men in the US who have been arrested and charged and destroyed simply on “Trumped up Charges”. The same result could emerge from a Whistleblower policy. Basically, the problem is that “anyone” could make a call and get away with it. The added incentive in a time when money is sorely needed is a further danger. Motivated by the promise of a reward there could be many pranks, and false and misleading calls. Just for the money. The Whistleblower Policy should contain some degree of truth requirements, penalties for making false reports etc. What about when they admit they “got it wrong” but the call is made and an innocent life is destroyed?
This policy needs "secondguessing" owing to the inherent dangers and concerns that it presents. For every policy, there are countervailing disbenefits: such as public safety, personal liberty and revenge calls. To implement such a policy of whistle-blowers, to fight crimes and for cash creates a tenuous hold on freedoms. There are persons who would make reports to the Police just to “Hurt somebody”. There is malice, hatred, recriminations and abuse owing to ill will and bad “feelings”. Crime stoppers has done a wonderful job over the years but this is a path they should travel down carefully. It is somewhat comforting that this policy came out of the National Security Council (NSC) which is composed of elected officials who are accountable to the people of the TCI. For that alone, there must be some “balance to the policy” and the way it is implemented. With the Premier and Minister of Finance sitting on the NSC, TCIslanders can expect that there is some level of “representation” for them coming out of this council. There should be rules, guidelines, regulations and more critical “safeguards”. Crime continues to spiral out of control The crime wave in the Turks and Caicos Islands has reached a crazy point where some people fear for their lives. There are revenge killings, crimes of desperation where robberies happen simply for survival. None of this justified. The crime wave has gotten out of hand and the system is looking for solutions. The youths who are doing these killings are deemed as “disaffected”. They have no care for life or limb. Many fought to survive, as in some cases, they had no father or mother to provide them with the “Milk of Human Kindness”. This trend has hurt the TCI to no end. What can be done? There aren’t many answers. The Police Force seems divorced from realities on the ground.
How actualaboutpolicework?
The Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force is looking to review its public communications on crime, as well as renew its cash-for-information initiative. These and other issues were discussed at the last national Security Council meeting on August 2. On previous occasions, police have offered cash for information, but according to Commissioner of Police, Trevor Botting, the initiative has not reaped many rewards in the past. The initiative is offered through Crime Stoppers for information given anonymously, and the Commissioner is hopeful that residents will reconsider and make use of the offer, given the recent upsurge in crimes. What are your thoughts?
The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is weighing the feasibility of constructing a centralised headquarters in the near future. The Minister for Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development (PPID) Akierra Missick recently disclosed that her ministry is currently awaiting the final designs from consultants for the central complex which will make it easier for residents to access a range of government services.Missick explained that the project was conceptualised by the previous administration but little was done to bring it to fruition. During an interview with local talk show ‘Expressions, she said: “That was a project that when I became Minister, I found on the table, it hadn't moved in any way shape, or form, so we re-engage the awardee of the consultancy… they came as soon as the pandemic restrictions lifted”. She explained that her ministry has conducted several meetings with the consultants to flesh out the scope of work and the investment needed to commence the project. “We had about five or six meetings with them in Providenciales. “We’ve looked at various sites, we’ve seen their first set of designs and drawings and they’ve also done their detailed designs and drawings for the project and now we’re just waiting for them to issue the final sign-off which should have been done last month, but it is probably in train for us to be in a position to go out and tender for it.”
Well it seems that “no one” is willing to talk. Not even for the money. It is laudable to fight crime but leakers and whistleblowers are not a good idea. It never worked and will not work. How about old-fashioned policing? Officers walking the beat and doing real police work. That reaps more benefits than relying on calls for cash. Police need to rebuild trust Some crimes are very profitable. Especially corruption, people and drug smuggling. Many ex-pats don't trust any law enforcers and will not until the hunting stops. It's difficult to maintain the rule of law under an apartheid regime.

Missick further explained that the Government is weighing its priorities as it contemplates the massive investment against other important projects. “The real question is, what we want to spend the money on, would it be a new airport or a central complex, because that complex is coming in roughly at $100m”, she added.Turning her attention to Grand Turk, Missick stressed that the government is the largest renter of commercial properties on the island, so it has to be very cognisant of its role in the economy. She said: “If government decides, yes we’re going to build a massive complex and pull everyone into it, we are then going to disrupt the economy in this island, so we are looking at a strategic approach to developing possibly the ministry of finance office because once NJS Francis Building is finished the office of the premier will return there, but not the ministry of finance.“We’re looking at probably moving forward with constructing a standalone building for the ministry of finance, but I don’t think it will be prudent or reasonable to kind of vacate all of our rental agreements here in the island (of Grand Turk) until we can get a substantive private population that isn’t government based that can rent all of these spaces”, she added.

A search for a missing man earlier this month led to police uncovering a stash of guns, ammunition and drugs in a Providenciales house. Police reported that during the commission of a search on the residence and vehicle of Keneil Duveril on August 7, detectives found two illegal firearms, ammunition, and a quantity of cannabis. The 20-year-old Duvervil, who lives in The Bight, was arrested the same day, and on August 9, he was charged with the offences. He appeared in court in Providenciales this past Monday, August 15, where he was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk. Duvervil will appear in the Supreme Court for a sufficiency hearing in September.

Most people want a reduction in crime and many can do with the money, but the network of criminals has been woven so thickly that some people are scared. We have seen retribution and retaliation crime over the years, how safe are we if we talk? How many times don’t we see leaks in the police forces throughout the world—the risks outweigh the rewards. The Government is making significant headway with its plan to establish a national communications directorate to efficiently and effectively connect with the populace. This is according to the Leader of Government Business in the House of Assembly, Hon Akeirra Misick.“The communications directorate was funded and I'm advised by the Office of the Premier where this directorate will sit, it is presently recruiting for the staffing of the directorate that will provide a better strategy for us as an administration to communicate what we are doing to the public”, she said during an interview with Mr Robert Hall on Friday, August 5. She stressed that the communications directorate will also allow the Government to garner feedback on its plans and acknowledge concerns that residents may have. “I think a lot of persons generally feel that ministers or permanent secretaries or directors are on Facebook, and they’re reading comments on various things…I can tell you hand on Bible I have not been on Facebook in about five years, I am social media savvy on Instagram. “And so I find that because there's no Director of Communications, the channelling of concerns and questions happens on a public platform like Facebook, but is unable to be addressed because Facebook does not fit within the day-to-day work that we do as ministers and or permanent secretaries or directors.” She emphasised that clear lines of communication are crucial to the Government’s ability to reach its people. “I'm looking forward to the establishment of the communications director so that we can have better communication skills, and services platforms for all those whom we represent”, she added.

Modern boat slips are currently being constructed at Bellefield Landing in North Caicos following the signing of a contract this week between the government and Coastal and Marine Design Build Limited.Astatement from the Ports Authority on Wednesday, August 17, said the project commenced immediately and will provide a new dock for the ferry services and slips to berth ten vessels, with lengths up to 50 feet.
The project supports the goal of promoting prosperity and sustainable livelihood in North Caicos and Middle Caicos.
Minister of Health and Human Services Hon Jamell Robinson speaking to the Weekly News on Thursday, August 18 said: “Presently we have two batches of Covid-19 Pfizer Vaccines which are due to expire 30th of September and 31st of October respectively. “Unfortunately, we can’t say specifically how many will be discarded but can confirm that uptake has remained slow.”

Vials of Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines
The initial batch of 9,750 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, enough to vaccinate 4,875 people (approximately 11% of the population), arrived in the country on Thursday, January 7, 2021, via the London to Providenciales British Airways flight. The TCI, along with the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, were the only British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean to receive this initial batch of vaccines from the UK. This was attributed to the Turks and Caicos having the required infrastructure to maintain the vaccine (requires cooling to -70° C) and to distribute it effectively.
The new boat slips will consist of a floating dock with concrete decking, polythene floats, and an aluminum frame that will replace makeshift wooden boat slips currently in use at the port facility. They will also improve the safety of residents who travel to Providenciales through the port, and tourists who visit North Caicos and Middle Caicos from Providenciales.Theconstruction of the modern boat slips complements several other projects that the Ports Authority is currently implementing at Bellefield Landing, such as the construction of the port office and welcome centre and dredging of the port turning basin and Bellefield Landing navigation channels.

The Ports Authority noted that the project is consistent with their strategic plan for 2019 to 2023 and with several goals of the government’s ‘People’s Plan for Progress: Transforming TCI through Inclusive Growth’, whereby they express their commitment to establishing resilient infrastructure, innovation and industry as well as ensuring sustainable, inclusive, safe, and resilient communities.

Massive vaccine dump imminent as uptake remains low will continue to assist in its supply.” As it refers to the territory’s current vaccination statistics, Robinson said 87% of the territory’s population has been fully vaccinated (two doses) while 92% has been partially vaccinated (oneAlthoughdose). vaccine doses remain relatively scarce globally, concerns around waning immunity have prompted many countries, including the Turks and Caicos Islands to start administering additional doses. These additional doses commonly referred to as ‘booster shots’ are given to fully vaccinated individuals when the protection from the original shots has begun to decline, as well as extra shots given to people, such as the immunocompromised, who did not have a strong immune response from their initial doses. The uptake for these additional jabs has remained staggeringly low in the TCI, according to the Health Minister 22% of the population has received their first booster shot, and only 3% has taken a second booster jab. The Turks and Caicos Government began vaccinating the local population against the COVID-19 virus on 11 January 2021.Governor Nigel Dakin and then-Premier Sharlene CartwrightRobinson were amongst the first to receive the vaccine in an effort to encourage persons to take it.
Large amounts of expired PfizerBioNTech Covid-19 vaccines will be discarded soon, as vaccination rates continue to lag in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The pace of people getting Covid-19 vaccines or booster shots in the islands has plummeted in recent months, resulting in a large number of doses going unused. The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine which has been steadily supplied by the United Kingdom Government to the territory currently has a shelf life of six months.

From Bermuda and the Bahamas in the north to Trinidad and Tobago in the south, near-record numbers of seaweeds are smothering the Caribbean Atlantic coasts, and an unusual avalanche of brown algae have drifted into the Caribbean Sea, releasing a stench from noxious gases, annihilating fish and other wildlife, threatening tourism and economies across the region. The University of South Florida Optical Oceanography lab claims, 24m tons of sargassum blanketed the Atlantic in June this year and subsequently, boat owners were forced to suspend ferry services. Meanwhile, kayaking, paddle boarding, jet skiing and snorkelling tours were also cancelled. Sources revealed, the normally crystalline turquoise waters around the islands turned into a thorny yellowish-brown mush and scientists are speculating that this seaweed invasion of the Atlantic emanates from climate change and the warming of the waters, human activities, nitrogen-laden fertilizer, and sewage, which sustain the algae. The large throngs of seaweeds harbour acute environmental effects, as decaying algae modifies water temperatures and the pH balance and invigorate the deterioration of coral, sponges, and seagrasses.Eachisland had its unique share of challenges. The concentration of algae in Guadeloupe was so severe that it agitated residents suffering from asthma and other breathing complications, forcing the authorities to issue a health alert, and warned communities about the high level of hydrogen sulphide gas exuding from the rotting clods of Aseaweed.similar situation prompted President Biden to declare a federal emergency in US Virgin Islands following a cluster of sargassum clogging machinery at a desalination plant near St Croix, which disrupted the water supplies – unable to meet demands amid the recentAdditionally, drought. the seaweed occupation of the shoreline in Union Island, St Vincent and the Grenadines, has forced the closure of resorts for up to five months. In Martinique, a glut of sargassum killed thousands of fish, trapped in seaweeds, spurring concerns about the plight of endangered sea turtles that are dying off, because the carpet of algae spread across beaches is prohibiting turtles from laying eggs in the sand. While masses of sargassum is unhealthy for humans and marine creatures, tourism, and the economy, it possesses some unexplored benefits to society and the environment. Sargassum in moderation helps to purify water and absorb carbon dioxide and serves as a key component for habitats for turtles, fish, crabs, and shrimps.Too, it is regarded as a biofertilizer, which is useful in crops, biofuel, construction materials and medicinal products. This nutrient-dense macroalgae is minted in minerals, water-soluble polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, which enhance soil health, quality, productivity, and enzymatic activities and considering, the TCI is promoting backyard farming, sargassum could be a game changer. However, since the technology for exploiting such a feat is inexistent – for now – we must focus on the likely challenges it posits. Experts are now saying that this extremity poses grave threats to the health of regional tourism and fisheries industries, society, and economies including the TCI. Coupled with, the pandemic, climate change and global economic downturns, if the incursion of seaweeds in the region does not coerce TCI authorities to activate economic diversification, I am convinced, nothing else will!

TCI under threat from sargassum influx
BY DREXWELL SEYMOUR Drexwell Seymour is a certified public accountant and is the managing partner for HLB TCI. His favourite hobby, however, is writing. He has a personal website, www.drexwellseymour. com, where all of his writings are posted. He also has a YouTube channel where you can find inspirational videos. Drexwell has a BA in Accounting and an MBA in Finance. Many times, we cannot comprehend the decisions some people make. You must go through a similar situation to understand. There are people who have been grieving for years. The initial response from some of us is that these individuals need to let go. We don’t know what they are experiencing. I too did not have empathy for persons that went through grief until I lost someone who was very close to me. “He who feels it, knows it.” There are some of you who have an issue with people who got divorced and some of us would say we would never get a divorce. We don’t know what some people went through in their marriage. They may have encountered abuse and betrayal. On the other hand, there are some people that continue to stay in their marriage despite the cheating and abuse. There are also some situations whereby individuals remarried shortly after the loss of their spouse and some of us began to question that. Again, he who feels, it knows it. There are some people who give up easily and many of us questioned why they gave up. We do not know what people are going through. We do not know the stress and what is going on in their minds. We do not know their level of faith. Trust me, it is so easy to give up when the situation looks so impossible to turn around. There are many times I felt like giving up but because of my love for my family and my faith in God, I persevere. However, not everybody will persevere because even some Christians give up. Many of you had a problem with the way your parents chastised you and you probably say you will never chastise your children in that same manner. Until you become a parent, you realise what your parents had to go through and therefore you are repeating the sameSomepatterns.ofyou also criticised your leaders and say you will never do what they do. Being a leader is not easy and from the outside, it looks easy. You do not know half the story that leaders go through. The hands of some leaders are truly tied. You do not know the parameters that some leaders must work with. Furthermore, while you are sleeping, your leaders are “burning the midnight oil.” Some of us also believe that if we were to go into politics, we would do things differently but when we get there, we are doing the same thing as our predecessors. We don’t understand and appreciate how government works until we getInthere.conclusion, there is a patient who makes loud noises while experiencing cramps on dialysis, I used to say to myself, why this lady cannot be quiet as it cannot be that awful. Well, one day, I experienced cramps and I finally understood what the lady was experiencing. Only shame and pride kept me from making noise. He who feels it, knows it more. Therefore, don’t ever say you would never do that. Of course, set and maintain your standards and try your best not to compromise them.
Overcoming the obstacles in your life
Akierra Missick signals intention to lead PNP
I have some good news for you leaders. At some point in your life, you are going to experience some form of adversity, trial, or hardship. I know it’s the beginning of the weekend, and this is the last thing you wanted to hear before forgetting that the weekend is two days long and the work week is five days long. Ok, I should not have said good that was unnecessary. However, the point remains that in the course of your life, no matter who you are, there will come seasons that stretch you beyond your comfort level. The question is when those times of adversity come, how would you respond? I have four things from the third chapter of the scroll of Joshua that may help. Here is the first one. Look to God and not your circumstances. When the road becomes bumpy and the clouds gather, it is very easy to only see how bad things are. Easy, but not helpful. Focusing exclusively on the bad that is happening to us often leads to distraction and discouragement, to the point that inertia steps in, and we become blind to the opportunities to make positive changes. Put your focus on God’s grace – the fact that He treats us better than we deserve - willingness to help you, and commitment to the good purposes that He has for you. Secondly, look in the mirror. More specifically, look at the condition of your relationship with God, with those around you, and with yourself. Sometimes the thing that staples us to the trials in our lives is the person staring at us from the mirror. Our obstacles are overcome quicker when we take responsibility for our actions, make restitution where and when necessary, and do right. Forget the rah-rah of the cheerleading section that shouts to you “you can do it, you can do it, you can do it”. No, you can’t. Your resolve, network, and education would not bring you through life’s adversities. But God’s power would, and because of that, you need to rely on God’s power. Getting clarity about your limitations is one of the most freeing things that can happen to you. Contrary to your daily affirmation devotional you are not super-woman, you don’t have it all together and you are not the universe’s best friend. You are congealed dust supported by tubes with liquids running through them. Ok, that was a bit harsh. But the point is that we need to come to grips with our weaknesses because when we do we are ready to seek, receive and trust God’s help.God would show us what to do, and give us the power to get it done. Finally, when obstacles rise up in our lives, to overcome them we must step out in faith. Joshua was tasked with leading three million people across a raging river. He looked to God for help and was told what to do, but still needed to act in faith. The obstacle you may be facing right now is called unemployment, stepping out in faith is you getting your resume written up and printed, and hitting the road getting as many applications to as many employers as you could. For someone else, stepping out in faith is having that conversation you have been putting off for months. Obstacles come. Some people get crushed by them, others thrive. Which one do you want to be?

We welcome letters from all members of the public on a variety of topics to get the probiotic onto the corals in sufficient quantity and to make it stick for long enough to help. They initially applied it in a paste form the same way the antibiotic mixture has been applied around the region but found that putting it in a bag worked much better.
PROBIOTIC TREATMENT
The Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR), the Turks and Caicos Reef Fund (TCRF) and the South Caicos School for Field Studies (SFS) represented the Turks and Caicos Islands at an Overseas Territories Coral Conservation workshop in the Cayman Islands last week. High on the agenda was the Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD), which is affecting the region.SCTLD is a white plaquetype disease, which was initially reported off the Florida coast in 2014, since then it has spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean. According to information from the DECR, the workshop helped regional entities “share and learn new techniques and management strategies to combat the disease. Focus topics included monitoring strategies, experimental design, photogrammetry, probiotic treatment development and coral reef disease action plans”.

According to information from Dr Blake Ushijima, from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, the university has developed a probiotic treatment. Cayman News Service (CNS), which quoted Dr Ushijima, said that “very early results suggest that the treatment is more effective than the antibiotic paste currently being applied to infected corals, offering hope that this deadly disease can be Thecountered”.research is in its very early stages, but there is some indication that a deficiency or lack of certain bacteria could be making corals vulnerable to the still mysterious disease. Ushijima further explained that the scientific world is still struggling to pin down what is causing SCTLD and exactly how it infects corals. While there are some theories, it is likely to be a multitude of things that are simultaneously impacting the coral, made worse by the increasing sea temperature. He explained that corals are exposed to a variety of viruses and bacteria in their warm wet world. Some of these pathogens can hurt the coral, while others are harmless or even helpful, and the challenge is working out which is which. Ushijima said that, just like humans, corals need good bacteria to be healthy and this is probably why the probiotic mixture they have developed is working. Kelly Pitts from the Smithsonian Marine Station, who is working with Ushijima, was quoted by CNS as saying that among the difficulty they faced was working out how TCI was represented at the Overseas Territories workshop The disease can be considered one of the greatest threats currently impacting Caribbean coral reefs
Stony coral tissue loss disease discussed at Overseas Territories workshop
It said that the SCTLD can be considered one of the greatest threats currently impacting Caribbean coral reefs. The disease arrived on TCI reefs in early 2019. “The cause of SCTLD is still unknown but it is affecting over 30 species of corals - especially brain, pillar, star and starlet corals. The disease spreads quickly causing high coral mortality. Since its identification, outbreaks of SCTLD have been confirmed on coral reefs throughout the Caribbean,” DECR explained.During the workshop, TCI participated in Cayman's Coral Fest', where the festival welcomed local and international coral experts to discuss SCTLD, coral ecosystems, their conservation and other threats faced by this unique biome. During the event, the DECR, TCRF and SFS also presented their ongoing efforts to protect TCI coral reefs from SCTLD.
Commenting on the visit, Premier Misick said: “As the growth and development of the islands continue, it is important that our people are equipped to be employed in the best jobs available and make a meaningful contribution to the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

ELEVEN Hindu men jailed for life for the gang-rape of a pregnant Muslim woman during Hindu-Muslim riots in 2002 have been freed on remission, officials said on Tuesday, drawing condemnation from the victim’s widower, lawyers and politicians.Themenwere convicted in early 2008 and released from jail in Panchmahals in the western state of Gujarat on Monday, when India celebrated 75 years since the end of British rule. The Gujarat violence, one of India’s worst religious riots, led to the deaths of more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims. Bahamas: Final decision on minimum wage expected next week
US authorities have seen a spike in weapons smuggling to Haiti and the Caribbean in recent months, officials said on Wednesday, promising to boost efforts to combat the trade that is fueling rampant gang violence in Haiti and rising crime in the region. The announcement follows several bloody outbreaks of gang violence in Haiti that included gun battles in downtown Port-auPrince, and comes as countries such as The Bahamas and Jamaica are reporting rising incidence of gun-linked homicides. “Not only have we seen a marked uptick in the number of weapons, but a serious increase in the caliber and type of firearms being illegally trafficked,” said Anthony Salisbury, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations Miami. “We have been ramping up our efforts to stem the flow of illicit weapons into Haiti and the Caribbean,” he said, flanked by officials from other agencies including the Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection. A display of seized arms that were destined for Haiti included hand guns and an array of semiautomatic weapons, one of which officials identified as a sniper rifle. Legal export of weapons from the United States typically requires licenses from U.S. authorities. Haiti is still subject to a 1990s arms embargo, which has been amended to allow some exceptions for exports of weapons to Haitian security forces. Guns are frequently acquired in the United States via straw buyers, some of whom identify themselves as the ultimate end users of the guns but later illegally export them. A string of recent armstrafficking scandals in Haiti, including last month’s discovery of weapons in a shipping container labeled as church donations, ignited anger over a steady flow of guns. Haitian police on Wednesday arrested Frantz Cole, a priest with the Episcopal Church of Haiti, as part of the investigation into the July weapons seizure, a police spokesman told Reuters. Samuel Madistin, a lawyer representing the church, declined to comment. (Reuters)

Cayman Islands: New law coming to cut legal drink-drive limit by a third
“I am pleased to advise that the matter is before the Cabinet,” Mr Bell said when asked for an update on the issue yesterday. “The Cabinet is in active discussion, and we anticipate that at the Cabinet meeting, which is next week Tuesday, that we should be able to come to some conclusion with respect to what the minimum wage would look like. “Obviously, as you anticipate there will be more dialogue and consultation, but I am very pleased where we are at this stage with it.”
Currently, the national minimum wage is pegged at $210 per week, while the minimum wage in the public sector is $225 per week. The Progressive Liberal Party committed to increasing the country’s minimum wage to $250 per week during last year’s election campaign, as well as to examine the creation of a liveable wage. Shortly after assuming office, the Davis administration asked the National Tripartite Council, the body responsible for all labour-related matters in The Bahamas, to study the issue and provide recommendations to the government.Aftermonths of research, the body submitted its recommendations on the matter to the government in June, which was confirmed by NTC deputy chairman and labour director Robert Farquharson last month. While he did not want to say what the council had proposed, he noted that the recommendations submitted was a favourable one and that it would put smiles on the faces of many Bahamians. According to the labour director, there are approximately 340,000 men and women in the labour workforce. “We know that about approximately 25 per cent of those persons are impacted by the minimum wage,” he added, “and so before the government takes a decision, the government wants to ensure that there is additional widespread discussion and consultation so we expect in the very near future a number of town meetings to be held where we will invite members of the press and public to hear what the recommendations are. “I will not say what the figure is. I can say specifically that the recommendation will put a smile on the face of many persons who fall within that category, and it will cause them to have greater buying power.” As it relates to the government’s plans for a “liveable” wage, Mr Bell told reporters earlier this month that government has not backtracked on its promise to deliver an acceptable “liveable” wage for Bahamian workers. “This isn’t about something we want to coerce anyone into doing and we have to be mindful in terms of striking a very delicate balance by in terms of what it is that we want to make minimum wage or liveable wage, as well as we have to ensure that we have respect for the pocketbook of the private employers,” Mr Bell said at the time. (Tribune242) CAYMAN’S drink-drive limit, currently one of the most lenient in the world, could be cut by onethird. An amendment to the Traffic Act, which was gazetted today, will reduce the legal blood-alcohol content for drivers from 0.1% to 0.07%.This means that, if the amendment is passed, the legal blood-alcohol limit will be reduced from 100 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 mililitres of blood to 70 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. Bermuda: Increase in residents who are spending less as concerns grow over economy
PRIME Minister Philip “Brave” Davis repeated his calls this week for Caribbean leaders to unite and take action in the fight against climate change. Mr Davis noted that too many countries in the region were struggling with debt caused by climate related disasters. He said now was the time for countries to come up with solutions because our very lives depended on Theit. Prime Minister further spoke about the financial impacts of the environmental threat, noting that most of The Bahamas’ debt could be linked to natural disasters like hurricanes and highlighted the need for regional nations to have greater access to climate funding. He was addressing regional leaders during the opening ceremony of the Caribbean regional heads of government meeting at Baha Mar on Tuesday. The high-level talks ended on Wednesday.“Ourcountries are struggling with debts accumulated by climate disasters,” Prime Minister Davis stressed to Caribbean leaders. “What does this mean for the development of our nations, when our risk profile is becoming so severe that insurers question their willingness to offer risk facilities to offset climate disasters? Put simply, we are in danger of becoming uninsurable. He added: “Many if not all of us have already faced challenges in accessing climate-related funds. “By acting in common cause, we can move with more authority and with greater impact to address legacy issues, which have held us back from making meaningful progress.”MrDavis also pointed to “historic” steps taken by countries like the United States and Australia to address carbon emissions, which he said demonstrates that nothing is impossible, and called for all heads of states to come to the table to brainstorm ideas. “Let us work together to construct a joint solution in respect of climate risk insurance and other climate risk facilities and let us take practical steps to improve access to climate finance,” the prime minister added.

He also expressed optimism that talks from the conference will prove fruitful, noting that countries are tired of hearing unfulfilled promises related to climate change like the 2009 pledge made by wealthy countries to mobilise $100 billion annually to aid developing states with climate finance. “We are commitment fatigued and we are pledged fatigued so the pledge to make available $100bn has yet to be realised and that was made (nearly) 15 years ago and so the question now is the time for action is now. The time for talking needs to cease,” he also said. (Tribune242)
According to Narrative Research Bermuda, lower and middle-income earners were more likely to have bought less. The research company added: “With inflation surging and interest rates on the rise, residents in Bermuda are increasingly pessimistic about the Island’s economy, becoming more wary about their ability to afford goods and services. “Given rising inflation, increased interest rates, and lingering effects from supply chain issues, Bermudians are growing increasingly wary about the island’s economy, including the cost of living and their purchasing power.”Thesurvey showed that 54 per cent of residents were concerned about their ability to save for their retirement.Other concerns centred on health issues, with 49 per cent of participants claiming to be worried about their ability to buy healthy food, and 39 per cent anxious about the cost of health insurance. PM Davis calls on Caribbean leaders to take action on climate change “We are well aware that, going into COP27, work is underway to advance the implementation of a Santiago Network on Loss and Damage, along with the establishment of a Loss and Damage Facility.” He continued: “These are important tools to support our countries. However, we also need to ensure that risk or insurance facilities are also in the toolbox of solutions to help our people. Access to climate finance should not be unclear or cumbersome. “And the application of per capita overseas development assistance eligibility should not be taken as the main consideration for offering climate finance, which means that many Caribbean states would be frozen out from the start.”
The BBC’s Central America and Cuba correspondent Will Grant says the move is something hardliner revolutionaries have opposed for years and its success is by no means guaranteed. GRENADA’S former Climate Resilience Minister Simon Stiell will become the new United Nations climate chief, UN Secretary General António Guterres announced yesterday. Stiell will take over as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change with under three months before the latest round of climate negotiations at COP27 in Egypt. He will replace Mexican diplomat Patricia Espinosa. Stiell served for five years as Grenada’s Minister for Climate Resilience and the Environment until June 2022 and previously served as Minister for Education and Human Resource Development. The UN called Stiell a “true champion for formulating creative approaches for our collective global response to the climate crisis” in a statement. Stiell has been a prominent figure at UN climate negotiations, often calling for the world’s largest polluters to set more ambitious climate goals and to deliver finance promised to vulnerable countries, including small island nations. That funding is key to preparing for future climate impacts including extreme temperatures, rising sea levels, more frequent storms and drought. Stiell told Reuters in an interview last year that the G20 group of the world’s most powerful countries “generate 80% of global emissions and constitute 85% of global GDP. They have the wealth and technology to act.” (Reuters) Cuba is facing its worst economic crisis in 30 years.

Cuba bids for foreign investment to tackle goods shortages
A unique team of naval architects, electrical engineers, investment managers, experienced mariners and environmental activists from around the world incorporated e- Link in 2018 with base of operations established in Bermuda.MrVaucrosson, president of e-Link, said: “We’ve had strong interest from operators in the UK, Boston and Toronto and elsewhere. This is not a hybrid but a fully electric vessel that can be quickly charged even on the water.”
A BERMUDA company expects to deliver in the near future a new class of waterway vessels powered entirely by sustainable energy — vessels envisaged as the next generation of commercial ferries. Breakthrough technology and preliminary approvals from a number of shipping and municipal organisations had the company on deck just before the pandemic hit. The Bermuda company, e-Link Commuting Co Ltd, with co-founders Alan Burland and Andrew Vaucrosson, are working with Aspin Kemp & Associates, an energy integration and electrical engineering company with headquarters in Montague, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Their goal is to make electricpowered water taxis and ferries a reality across the globe. They are collaborating to accelerate net-zero waterway transportation. The development would put Bermuda on the map for a number of reasons, including another first in maritime expediency (the Bermuda sloop) and a highly developed environmental victory in green energy implementation. AKA and e-Link, the local company said to be transforming human and package mobility on the water, are combining extensive sustainable energy expertise with deep understanding and experience in the transportation sector to design and build the new class of vessels.
Bermuda’s Olympic sailor and business executive Mr Burland said that he and Mr Vaucrosson intended to deliver a product that cities around the world will find useful. He said: “This environmental consciousness is a fundamental component to how we are designing the power system and propulsion systems for our eLC shuttle platform.”
He added: “We recognise there will be ongoing innovations in battery technology, shore power recharging and drivetrain technology requiring foresight and dedication, which is why our collaboration with AKA and other strategic partners will lead to our success.”
The e-Link team will focus on the technical aspects of the boat design and shuttle build/assembly, while AKA’s team will design the vessel’s power system and drivetrain propulsion as well as the addition of hydrogen fuel-cell innovation to help to extend the battery life of the e-Link shuttle platform.
Economy minister Alejandro Gil said the move will allow for the “expansion and diversification of supply to the population and contribute to the recovery of domestic industry”. In 1969, Fidel Castro nationalised Cuba’s private wholesale and retail industry. The new foreign investment bill, however, recognises that the country’s centralised government cannot resolve its essential goods shortage without investment from overseas.Under the new policy, businesses that have been based in Cuba for several years will be prioritised. Government officials said they will prioritise deals with businesses selling green energy technologies and equipment that could boost domestic production. It added that there will be no market competition at first.
The Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, is facing a backlash after being seen partying in a leaked video. In the footage, thought to be taken from social media, she and friends including Finnish celebrities are seen dancing and singing. She has faced criticism from opposition parties, with one leader demanding she take a drug test. Ms Marin, 36, denied taking drugs, saying she only drank alcohol and just partied “in a boisterous way”.
China’s decision to fire missiles over Taiwan must be contested, a top US military commander has said.Seventh Fleet commander Vice Admiral Karl Thomas said otherwise such action by China would become the norm, calling it “a gorilla in the room”. Beijing held military drills around the self-governing island earlier this month but did not confirm if any missiles passed directly over it. Tensions soared after US politician Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August. Her high-profile visit infuriated Beijing, which claims the selfruled island as part of its territory. Tuesday’s comments by Vice Admiral Thomas are significant, Based in Yokosuka, Japan, the Seventh Fleet is the largest forward-deployed fleet in the US Navy, with some 50 to 70 vessels and submarines - and is a key part of its military presence in the region. “It’s very important that we contest this type of thing. I know that the gorilla in the room is launching missiles over Taiwan,”

China’s decision to conduct nearly a week of military drills in the waters around Taiwan disrupted major shipping and aerial routesa move the island said effectively amounted to a blockade. It also accused Beijing of using the drills as practice for an invasion. Taiwan said the missiles China fired flew high into the atmosphere and posed no threat. Its defence ministry did not disclose the trajectory of the missiles, citing intelligence concerns.
It wants contestants to come up with promotions, branding, and even cutting-edge plans involving artificial intelligence. Japanese media say the reaction has been mixed, with some criticism about the bid to promote an unhealthy habit. But others have posted quirky ideas online - such as famous actresses “performing” as virtual-reality hostesses in digital clubs.Contestants have until the end of September to put forward their ideas. The best plans will then be developed with help from experts before the final proposals are presented in November.

The Japanese embassy in Washington said it believed four missiles fired by China had passed over Taiwan’s capital Taipei. The US and other allies have stepped up naval crossings in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, another area of strategic importance to Beijing, to emphasise that these are international waters. While the US has official diplomatic relations with China and not Taiwan, it maintains a special relationship with the island, which includes selling weapons for defence - an arrangement that has long troubled China. In recent years it has also become yet another flashpoint between Washington and Beijing as tensions between the two soured. (BBC)
JAPAN’S young adults are a sober bunch - something authorities are hoping to change with a new campaign.Theyounger generation drinks less alcohol than their parentsa move that has hit taxes from beverages like sake (rice wine). So the national tax agency has stepped in with a national competition to come up with ideas to reverse the trend. The “Sake Viva!” campaign hopes to come up with a plan to make drinking more attractiveand boost the industry. The contest asks 20 to 39-yearolds to share their business ideas to kick-start demand among their peers - whether it’s for Japanese
The campaign’s website says Japan’s alcohol market is shrinking and the country’s older demographic - alongside declining birth rates - is a significant factor behind it. Recent figures from the tax agency show that people were drinking less in 2020 than in 1995, with numbers plummeting from an annual average of 100 litres (22 gallons) to 75 litres (16 gallons). Tax revenue from taxes on alcohol has also shrunk over the years. According to The Japan Times newspaper, it made up 5% of total revenue in 1980, but in 2020 amounts to just 1.7%.
Just last week, Ms Marin was dubbed the “coolest prime minister in the world” by German news outletCommentingBild. on the video on Thursday, she said she knew she was being filmed but was upset that the video had become public. “I danced, sang, and partiedperfectly legal things. And I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve seen or known of others [using drugs],” she Oppositionadded.party leader, Riikka Purra, called for Ms Marin to take a voluntary drug test, saying there was a “shadow of doubt” hanging over the prime minister. Other opposition party politicians have criticised both the prime minister and the media for talking about partying - instead of more important domestic problems. Ms Marin told journalists: “I have a family life, I have a work life and I have free time to spend with my friends. Pretty much the same as many people my age.”
The World Bank estimates that nearly a third (29%) of Japan’s population is aged 65 and olderthe highest proportion in the world.
Vice Admiral Thomas told reporters in Singapore. “It’s irresponsible to launch missiles over Taiwan into international waters. “If you don’t challenge it... all of a sudden it can become just like the islands in the South China Sea [that] have now become military outposts. They now are full functioning military outposts that have missiles on them, large runways, hangers, radars, listening posts.”

AT least 38 people have been killed and dozens more injured in forest fires that have devastated northern Algeria. Kamel Beldjoud, the country’s interior minister, said 24 people died in El Tarf, near the border with Tunisia, as well as a mother and daughter in Setif. Local media said at least 200 others have suffered burns and respiratory problems. Firefighters, supported by helicopters, were still trying to contain several blazes on Thursday morning.Thenames of the mother, 58, and her 36-year-old daughter who died in Setif have not yet been released, but officials there said flames had reached dozens of homes and villages. Officials said that some 39 fires were ravaging various parts of northern Algeria, and they warned that hot winds could spread the flames further. The civil protection agency said that the city of El Tarf was the worst hit area with 16 fires currently burning. And reports say some 350 residents have been evacuated in several provinces. Northern Algeria is affected by forest fires every year, with Mr Beldjoud noting that 106 fires have broken out in Algeria since August, destroying 800 hectares of forest and 1,800 hectares of woodlands.Some90 people are thought to have died in fires last year- and more than 100,000 hectares of woodland was burnt. Last August, Mr Beldjoud blamed a spate of fires in Algeria’s Kabyle region on arson, claiming “only criminal hands” could explain “the simultaneous outbreak of about 50 fires across several localities”. Thursday’s toll brings the total number of Algerians killed in wildfires this summer up to 42. The latest blazes come during a summer which has seen a number of countries in the Mediterranean region ravaged by wildfiresparticularly in Europe, with France, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy all affected. Just last week, more than 1,000 fire officials battled what they described as a “monster” wildfire near Bordeaux. (BBC)

Afghanistan: Deadly blast rips through crowded Kabul mosque
Critics of the president have voiced fears that he is preparing to follow the example of former US President Donald Trump and allege widespread fraud if he loses the election.
Some victims were buried on the outskirts of the city.
“Our doctors... operated [on] the patients in need of surgical assistance all night long. The injuries were mainly related to the blast, so there were shells inside the bodies and burning injuries all over the bodies of the victims.” He said he believed the blast was inside the mosque. “There was probably someone entering during the prayer time, so it was crowded at that moment and then [the attacker] activated this body burning improvised explosive device.“So that all the persons that were close to the attacker were basically dead and the ones all around received several injuries,” Mr Sozza said. News agency AP quoted Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid as saying that the “perpetrators of such crimes will soon be brought to justice and will be punished”. But in a series of tweets, the UN mission in Afghanistan (Unama) urged the Taliban to take “concrete steps” to prevent terrorism and provide additional support to vulnerable communities. It said the attack was “the latest in a disturbing series of bombings which have killed & injured more than 250 people in recent weeks, the highest monthly number of civilian casualties over the last year”. Senior Taliban officials are meeting more than 2,000 tribal and religious elders on Thursday in Afghanistan’s second city Kandahar, the movement’s main power base. A spokesman quoted by AFP news agency said “important decisions” would be taken at the major gathering. The Kabul bombing comes days after the assassination of prominent cleric and Taliban supporter Rahimullah Haqqani in a suicide bombing. The Islamic State group said it carried out the attack on Mr Haqqani, one of the highest profile figures to be killed since the Taliban returned to power a year ago. (BBC)

LAST year’s “Rust” shooting in which a firearm handled by actor Alec Baldwin discharged and killed the movie’s cinematographer was accidental, the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico said Monday. The medical investigator says there was “no compelling demonstration” that someone purposefully loaded the gun with live ammunition before that Oct. 21, 2021 incident on a Santa Fe-area movie set, nor was there any “obvious intent to cause harm or death.” Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died after being struck by a gunshot inside a church at the Bonanza Creek Ranch. Baldwin’s lawyer says the medical investigator’s findings are the latest evidence that he shouldn’t be charged.

Experiments on 437 people showed the updated vaccine was safe and gave better immune protection against newer variants. Levels of antibodies that were able to stick to and disable Omicron (BA.1) were 1.7 times higher in people given the new vaccine. Tests against more recent Omicron variants (BA.4 and BA.5), which are causing the UK’s current wave, also showed higher levels of protection with the updated vaccine. However, it is far from clear what that means in terms of preventing someone from becoming seriously ill. Additionally, it is uncertain what variants we will be facing in the coming months and exactly how well the updated vaccine will perform against them. Health ministers have officially given the go-ahead for the bivalent vaccines. In England, Health Secretary Steve Barclay said it was “very good news for the UK population” and those eligible “will have the comfort of knowing that their immunity has been topped up”. People will be contacted from early September, he said. Wales’ health minister Eluned Morgan said vaccines “have saved countless lives” and urged everyone who was eligible to come forward. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which advises governments in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, has confirmed the following groups should be offered some form of booster in the autumn: health and social care staff · everyone aged 50 and over carers who are over the age of 16 people over five whose health puts them at greater risk, this includes pregnant women people over five who share a house with somebody with a weakened immune systemStéphane Bancel, the chief executive officer of Moderna, said he was “delighted” the vaccine had been approved. “This represents the first authorisation of an Omicroncontaining bivalent vaccine; this bivalent vaccine has an important role to play in protecting people in the UK from Covid-19 as we enter the winter months,” he said. Prof Wei Shen Lim, from the JCVI, said: “It is important that everyone who is eligible takes up a booster this autumn, whichever vaccine is on offer.”
THE UK has become the first country to approve a dual vaccine which tackles both the original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant. Ministers say the vaccine will now form part of the autumn booster campaign. Moderna thinks 13 million doses of its new vaccine will be available this year, but 26 million people are eligible for some form of booster. Health officials say people should take whichever booster they are offered as all jabs provide protection. The original vaccines used in the pandemic were designed to train the body to fight the first form of the virus which emerged in Wuhan, in China, at the end of The2019. Covid virus has since mutated substantially, with a stream of new variants emerging that can dodge some of our immune defences. They have caused large surges in cases around theTheworld.original vaccines still provide strong protection against becoming severely ill or dying, but companies are tweaking them to match the virus as it evolves. Cases of coronavirus are currently falling in the UK. In mid-to-late July, around 2.5 million people tested positive for coronavirus.

and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has considered the evidence and given the vaccine approval for use in adults. Dr June Raine, the regulator’s chief executive, said: “What this bivalent vaccine gives us is a sharpened tool in our armoury to help protect us against this disease as the virus continues to evolve.”

Originally those aged 50-65 were not going to be jabbed. However, the immunisation campaign has been expanded because of the rapid spread of variants, uncertainty about how the virus will mutate and the expectation that we will are likely to be more socialand therefore give the virus a helping hand this winterincluding at Christmas. However, most people under 50 will not be boosted in the coming months. The focus remains on preventing those most at risk from becoming seriously ill, rather than stopping the young passing the virus on to older relatives.Moderna is not the only company updating its vaccines. MORE than half of people—56%— who are infected with the Omicron variant are not aware of their infection. That’s the conclusion of a small study published on Aug. 17 in JAMA Network Open. It’s good news, in some ways, since it underscores the fact that The downside is that many people are likely spreading the virus unintentionally.DrSusanCheng, director of the Institute for Research on Healthy Aging at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute, and her colleagues at the University of California, Los Angeles and Abbott Laboratories, studied 210 employees and patients at Cedars-Sinai who provided at least two blood samples for antibody testing—one before the Omicron surge and one after. The researchers analysed them for levels of antibodies to the SARSCoV-2Mostvirus.of the people in the study were vaccinated, and the researchers measured levels of two different types of antibodies: those that the immune system made in response to the vaccines, and those that the immune system made after infection with the virus. At the start of the study, all of the volunteers had to have infectioninduced antibody levels below a certain threshold, indicating they had not recently been infected with the virus. That way, any rise in antibody levels served as a proxy for an infection. The participants also filled out health surveys describing their symptoms and any COVID-19 PCR testing to determine if they had an infection during the study period.
spread of the virus. “If one message comes out of our study, I hope it’s that awareness of your infection status is going to be really key to get us through this pandemic faster,” says Cheng. “Lack of awareness and lack of knowing could lead to walking around with something transmissible, and unwittingly passing the virus to a household member, neighbor, co-worker, or someone at the grocery store.”
“Increasing people’s awareness of their status is our goal,” she says. “Unfortunately, we have to live with this virus for some time, and if we can be more aware, then we can potentially help ourselves, our families, and our communities to curb the spread of the virus.” (Time)
Half of people with Omicron don’t know they’re infected, study says
The researchers found that 56% of the people in the study who tested positive were not aware that they had been infected, either because they did not experience any symptoms of COVID-19 or felt only mild symptoms they attributed to a cold or allergies. The findings support early data from around the world suggesting that throughout the pandemic, anywhere from 25% to 40% of SARS-CoV-2 infections have been asymptomatic, which presents challenges for publichealth officials trying to control the WHEN an asteroid slammed into what is now the Gulf of Mexico 66 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs, did it have a companion? Was Earth bombarded on that terrible day by more than one spaceTherock?discovery of what seems to be a second impact crater on the other side of the Atlantic, of a very similar age, is raising these questions. It’s not as big as the one we know at Chicxulub in Mexico, but still it speaks to a catastrophic event.Dubbed Nadir Crater, the new feature sits more than 300m below the seabed, some 400km off the coast of Guinea, west Africa. With a diameter of 8.5km, it’s likely the asteroid that created it was a little under half a kilometre across. The hidden depression was identified by Dr Uisdean Nicholson from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK. He’d been analysing seismic survey data, looking for somewhere to drill, to better understand past climatic changes on Earth. Such surveys, frequently obtained by oil and gas prospectors, record the different layers of rock and sediment underground, often to a depth of several kilometres. “These surveys are kind of like an ultrasound of Earth. I’ve Mexico’s famous sinkholes (cenotes) have formed in weakened limestone overlying the crater.
Omicron tends to cause relatively mild symptoms (or no symptoms at all) in vaccinated people.
Dr Nicholson’s team has to be cautious about tying the two impacts together.
Nadir has been given a very similar date to Chicxulub based on an analysis of fossils of known age that were drilled from a nearby borehole. But to make a definitive statement, rocks in the crater itself would need to be pulled up and examined. This would also confirm Nadir is indeed an asteroid impact structure and not some other, unrelated feature caused by, for example, ancient volcanism. The idea that Earth may have been hit by a cluster of large space rocks in the past is not a new one. And people have already speculated that the impactor that created Boltysh Crater in Ukraine may also be related to the Chicxulub event in some way. Its age is not too dissimilar. Prof Sean Gulick, who co-led the recent project to drill into the Chicxulub Crater, said Nadir might have fallen to Earth on the same day. Or it might have struck the planet a million or two years either side of the Mexican cataclysm. Scientists will only know for sure when rocks from the west African crater are inspected in the lab “A much smaller cousin, or sister, doesn’t necessarily add to what we know about the dinosaurs’ extinction, but it does add to our understanding of the astronomical event that was Chicxulub,” the University of Texas at Austin researcher told BBC News.
The data showed that people’s awareness of their infection status improved after at-home rapid test kits became widely available earlier in 2022. While about 75% of people were unaware of their infection in January and February, only about 56% were by May.
Impact crater may be dinosaur killer’s baby cousin spent probably the last 20 years interpreting them, but I’ve never seen anything like this,” he told BBC News. “Nadir’s shape is diagnostic of an asteroid impact. It’s got a raised rim surrounding a central uplift area, and then layers of debris that extend outwards.” The asteroid that created the Chicxulub Crater in the Gulf of Mexico is estimated to have been about 12km across. It gouged out a 200km-wide depression, and in the process set off mighty earth tremors, tsunamis, and a global firestorm. So much dusty material was thrown into the sky that Earth was plunged into a deep freeze. The dinosaurs couldn’t ride out the climate shock. By comparison, the effects from a Nadir-sized impactor would have been much smaller. “Our simulations suggest this crater was caused by the collision of a 400m-wide asteroid in 500800m of water,” explained Dr Veronica Bray from the University of Arizona, US. “This would have generated a tsunami over one kilometre high, as well as an earthquake of Magnitude 6.5 or so. “The energy released would have been around 1,000 times greater than that from the January 2022 eruption and tsunami in Tonga.”
The fact that one out of two people infected with Omicron aren’t even aware that they have COVID-19 makes a strong case for more frequent testing. Regularly testing yourself with at-home rapid antigen kits is a good idea even if you don’t feel sick, since transportation, work, school, and crowded public venues—like for concerts or sports games—are all places where you can potentially getKnowinginfected. your infection status, says Cheng, could become increasingly important as studies show that people are getting infected not just once, but twice and even multiple times with Omicron subvariants. She is currently studying reinfection to better understand how many times people are getting multiple infections, and what risk factors make it more likely.
A group of 111 healthy women participated in a task that evoked the dopamine-related RPE response. The task involved a classic sucrose taste-conditioning paradigm where participants learned to expect or not expect a sucrose reward. Throughout the task, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to measure participants’ brain activity. Additionally, the women reported how much aerobic exercise they engage in on a weekly basis. The researchers then analyzed the fMRI data, focusing on brain responses when participants either unexpectedly received a sucrose reward, unexpectedly did not receive it, or expectedly received it.
Overall, the results suggest a link between aerobic exercise and the brain’s response to unexpected reward.
a person receives an outcome of an event that is different than expected, causing dopamine neurons to send out a signal. This unexpected outcome could be positive, like receiving an expected reward, or negative, like having a reward unexpectedly taken away. The RPE is thought to reflect motivational salience — a cognitive process that drives a person’s behavior toward a positive outcome. The researchers speculated that people who exercise more often might show a stronger salience response in the dopamine system. “The type of reward system response that we focus on responds to unexpected stimulus receipt – one could say excitement over receiving a reward unexpectedly, or unexpected stimulus omission, or disappointment over not receiving a reward that was expected,” Frank told PsyPost. “The stimuli we use are taste stimuli sucrose or water.”
The physical and mental health benefits of exercise are widely known, yet finding the motivation to exercise can be a challenge. The authors of the study said that a look inside the brain may shed light on how people can be encouraged to maintain healthy exercise habits. More specifically, the dopamine reward system may play a role in motivating people to exercise, and the study authors proposed that regular exercise might alter the brain reward response.
Neuroimaging study finds people who exercise more display an elevated brain response to reward
For all three conditions, increased exercise was associated with a stronger response in the right medial orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). But after correcting for multiple comparisons, this heightened activity was only significant during the unexpected receipt condition. “Higher amount of cardio/ aerobic exercise was associated with higher brain response (orbitofrontal cortex, an area between the eyes that is important for valuation of rewards) when participants received the sugar stimulus unexpectedly, but did not affect the response to unexpected stimulus omission or disappointment,” Frank explained. “We believe that higher amount of exercise might change your brain that receiving a reward unexpectedly is more enjoyable.”
“My background is in eating disorders research and those individuals frequently engage in very high amount of exercise. Before we explore the effects of exercise in that population, I wanted to study the relationship between exercise and brain reward processing, specifically dopaminerelated reward processing,” said study author Guido K.W. Frank of the University of California, San Diego. The researchers examined brain activity during a reward prediction error (RPE) task. An RPE is when Scientists say they have solved an evolutionary mystery involving a 500 million-year-old microscopic, spiny creature with a mouth but no anus. When it was discovered in 2017, it was reported that the tiny fossil of this sack-like marine beast could be humans’ earliest-known ancestor.Theancient animal, Saccorhytus coronarius, was tentatively placed into a group called the deuterostomes.Thesearethe primitive ancestors of vertebrates - including humans. A new study now suggests Saccorhytus should be put into an entirely different group of animals. A team of researchers in China and the UK carried out a very detailed X-ray analysis of the creature, and concluded that it belongs to a group called the ecdysozoans - ancestors of spiders andOneinsects.source of this evolutionary confusion was the animal’s lack of an Emilyanus. Carlisle, a researcher who studied Saccorhytus in detail, explained to BBC Radio 4’s Inside Science: “It’s a bit confusing[most] ecdysozoans have an anus, so why didn’t this one?” One “intriguing option”, she said, is that an even earlier ancestor of this whole group did not have an anus, and that Saccorhytus evolved after“Itthat.could be that it lost it during its own evolution - perhaps it didn’t need one because it could just sit in one spot with one opening for everything.”Themain reason though, for the “repositioning” of Saccorhytus on the Cambrian tree of life is that, on the initial examination, holes that surrounded its mouth were interpreted as pores for gills - a primitive feature of deuterostomes. When scientists looked in more detail - using powerful X-rays to examine the 1mm creature closely - they realised that these were actually the base of spines that had snapped off. Scientists studying these fossils try to place each animals on a tree of life - much like a family treeenabling them to build a picture to understand where they came from Artist’s reconstruction of Saccorhytus coronarius, based on the original fossil finds. The actual creature was probably no more than a millimetre in size.
Notably, the right medial OFC is implicated in goaldirected decision-making and the calculation of reward value. The findings may suggest that exercise strengthens this circuitry, driving higher brain activity in the OFC. Alternatively, it could be that higher activity in the OFC reinforces engagement in exercise. “It is therefore possible that individuals who engage in more aerobic activity may be intrinsically more responsive to salient stimuli and especially stimulus receipt,” the researchers wrote, “or alternatively, engagement in aerobic exercise has modulated brain activity and dopamine signaling, which may then reflexively reinforce and functionally maintain the exercise behavior.” The authors note that both of these explanations could be Overall, true. the results suggest a link between aerobic exercise and the brain’s response to unexpected reward. “It is possible that exercise may in particular enhance the ability to value or enjoy stimuli or experiences, which could be important for intervening on psychiatric disorders,” the authors said, adding that an “altered brain salience response is characteristic of many psychiatric Illnesses.”
If exercise is found to improve motivational salience, this could reveal potential treatment options for affected individuals.
Mystery of half-billion year old creature with no anus solved and how they “Saccorhytusevolved.would have lived in the oceans - in the sediment with its spines holding it in place,” explained Ms Carlisle, who is based at the University of Bristol. “It would, we think, have just sat there - in a very strange environment with lots of animals that would have looked like some creatures alive today, but a lot that looked completely alien.” The rocks containing these Cambrian fossils are still being studied. “There’s so much we can still learn about its environment,” Ms Carlisle added.

NEW research published in the journal Biological Psychology revealed that people who exercise more show increased brain activity when receiving an unexpected reward, specifically in the right medial orbitofrontal cortex. The new contract takes the 37-year-old to $532 million in guaranteed career earnings, making him the highest paid player in terms of salary in the league’s history, surpassing Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant. The deal includes a player option for the 2024/25 season, which means that James will be able to opt out of the final year of the contract if he no longer wants to stay with the team.
The new deal puts to rest any notion of James, who is already an official billionaire, becoming a free agent next year with the four-time NBA champion and MVP instead focusing on making more history with the Lakers. Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) cautiously welcomed the interest from Ratcliffe but said a takeover would need the support of fans. A MUST spokesperson told BBC Sport: “While supporters have called for change, this of course has to be the right change. “Any prospective new owner has to be committed to the culture, ethos and best traditions of the club. They have to be willing to invest to restore United to former glories, and that investment must be real new money spent on the playing side and the stadium. “Finally, any new ownership structure must embed supporters, including a degree of fan share ownership, in their operating model.”Earlier on Wednesday, Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, said he was joking after tweeting he was going to buy United. Musk, 51, is reported to have a net worth of $270bn (£223bn) according to Forbes, while Ratcliffe is worth an estimated $16.3bn (£13.5bn). In May, Ratcliffe made an unsuccessful £4.25bn offer to buy Chelsea after owner Roman Abramovich put the London club up for sale. He was honoured with a statue in his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama earlier this year and said that played a part in his decision to accept the bout with Helenius, who has won 31 of his 34 fights. “I thought so many times about whether I should stay out of the business or come back,” added Wilder.“Once I got my statue in my hometown and saw so many people arrive and celebrate with me [it] made me feel like my job is not done.” (BBC) Casemiro won the Uefa Super Cup with Real Madrid earlier this month.

Ronaldo has a year left on the contract he signed when he rejoined United from Juventus a yearDespiteago. his return, United missed out on Champions League qualification last season after finishing sixth in the Premier League. They are now bottom of the table for the first time since 199293 after losing their opening two games of the season.
The 30-year-old would become one of the club’s top earners if he decided to join the side currently bottom of the Premier League after two matches. After talks to sign Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot collapsed over the player’s demands, United have turned their attention to Casemiro as they look to address weaknesses in Erik ten Hag’s midfield. Casemiro has been with Real since 2013, winning three La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues.

Although Casemiro has a contract that runs to 2025, Real are mindful of the scale of United’s offer of a contract that could extend to 2027 once the option of an additional season is added on. They would not stand in his way if he decided to accept. He would arrive at United on a big salary in keeping with his status as one of 30 players nominated for this year’s Ballon D’Or, even if his place at Real is under threat from new arrival Aurelien Tchouameni.
One of the best defensive midfield players in the world, Casemiro has been effective in a team that drops deep when it does not have possession, which Real tend to do with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in their team. Casemiro’s impact can be seen by looking at Opta statistics to compare his figures against those of other central midfielders in La Liga last season. The Brazil international ranked top for successful blocks, placed second for tackles made, behind Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets, and also came third overall for possession won. Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino was first and Busquets runner-up in that latter category. He also contributed to Real’s attacks, ranking fifth for forward passes and joint-sixth for shots among the league’s central midfielders. thrashes Victoria Azarenka in Cincinnati
triumph in New York last year, when she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in what was only her fourth senior tournament. The victory propelled the previously little-known teenager into global superstardom, but she has since faced the difficulties often encountered by young players in their first full season on the WTA Tour. Regularly hampered by fitness issues this year as she adjusts to the rigours of the senior tour, Raducanu arrived in Cincinnati with a record of 11 wins and 14 losses this season. But with her fearless and accurate groundstrokes, she has so far shown a similar level in the WTA 1000 event to the one which led to her success at Flushing Meadows.Pegula, however, is likely to provide a sterner test - and a more accurate appraisal of Raducanu’s current level - than Williams or Azarenka. In what was her first career meeting with 23-time major champion Williams and likely to be the last, the teenager clinically took advantage of the 40-year-old’s lack of sharpness by hitting 14 winners and making just one unforced error in a ruthless victory. After that night session, Raducanu returned to Cincinnati’s centre court against 33-year-old Azarenka and produced another dominant display. The forehand continued to be a potent weapon, while she was also helped by wayward returning from the two-time Grand Slam champion. After cruising through a 26-minute opener to record a second straight bagel, Raducanu raced into a 4-0 lead in the next set, before Azarenka finally got on the scoreboard with back-to-back holds. She offered a little more belated resistance when Raducanu served for the match, earning two break points and saving a match point before the Briton wrapped up victory.“Inthe second set I could feel the important moments and a couple of turning points that could have made the second set really difficult,” added Raducanu. “I am really pleased with how I dug in, and serving it out in that last game was really difficult.” Gauff plays down injury fears before US Open American teenager Coco Gauff has played down the seriousness of the ankle injury which forced her to retire from a first round match against Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova on Tuesday. Nadal has spent six weeks recovering from the abdominal muscle injury and the defeat in the round-of-32 match is a blow to his US Open preparations. The year’s final Grand Slam event gets under way on 29 August. “In terms of New York, it’s a Grand Slam, a different kind of tournament,” said Nadal, who has won the US Open in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019. “I was only able to play two sets before this match in the last 40 days. “I know that to gain condition, I will have to be on the tour practising with the guys.”
