Ocean Breeze Resort opens in Whitby, North Caicos – 100% locally owned Offering more than the Island’s norm, Ocean Breeze Resort – the brainchild of Darville and Kadra Handfield – last weekend opened its doors to serve the islands of North and Middle Caicos. Hosted on Saturday, at the Whitby location, the opening saw several government officials, family, friends and other invited guests coming together to celebrate an event that is a welcome addition to the islands. A luxurious boutique hotel, Ocean Breeze offers 26 wellappointed and elegantly designed rooms, elegant dining options, amazing views and a familyinspired atmosphere. Offering remarks at the opening, Darville Handfield said the momentous occasion was years in coming and a long-held dream of his. “Years ago, I envisioned creating a boutique resort that would transcend the ordinary and provide an extraordinary experience for all. More than just creating a space for just relaxation and pleasure, imagine a place
where boutique instead of just signifying small places, reflects an uncompromising commitment to excellent service…” Handfield said that is exactly what he and his wife have created at Ocean Breeze. Located just an eight-minute stroll from the beach, the resort offers a serene and opulent experience amidst the stunning backdrop of pristine beaches and turquoise waters of North Caicos. For those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Providenciales, or just an escape from everyday life, Ocean Breeze offers just that, with charming allure and tailored comfort. From its exquisitely designed rooms and suites, with balconies overlooking breathtaking vistas to fully equipped kitchens, every detail has been thoughtfully considered to cater to the needs of the modern traveller. One of the highlights of the resort is the dining experience at Cilantros Bar and Grill, a fully equipped fitness centre, spa and treatment room, to name a few of

its amenities. Deputy Governor, HE Anya Williams, who was among the officials present, congratulated the couple for their accomplishment: “Congratulations to Darville and Kadra Handfield on the official opening of their 100% locally owned boutique hotel on the island of North Caicos. “So happy for the both of you and so proud of your major
accomplishment, which brings with it many opportunities for employment and add-on businesses on the island of North Caicos.” District Commissioner of North Caicos, Jas Walkin also had words of congratulations for the hoteliers on their new venture. “As the District Commissioner for North Caicos, I join with the residents in feeling proud, excited and grateful for this establishment.
“We will support you and help to make sure that this resort never has a slow season and that it will be one of the most successful resorts in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Walkin shared to his social media account. Premier Hon Charles W. Misick was also effusive in his praise, commending the couple for utilising local experience and local talent.

UK commits to ‘modern partnership’ with OTs A Joint Declaration between the United Kingdom and British Overseas Territories has been signed and ratified, making way for enhanced transparency, more democratic rights and respect. The Declaration – which was signed during the recent Joint Ministerial Council- commits to a new, more collaborative and ‘modern partnership’ between the UK and its territories. The agreement includes a “plan to deepen bilateral partnerships, enhance transparency and support the OTs to take on more responsibilities should they wish to do so”, a statement from the
Governor’s Office related. The Joint Declaration defines the ‘modern partnership’ as one that’s based on shared democratic values and respect for human rights. As part of the declaration, the UK and OTs committed to improve transparency and deepen bilateral partnerships; consult OTs on UK primary legislation that impacts them; and support territories to take on more responsibilities where they wish to do so. Commenting on the Declaration, UK Minister for the Overseas Territories, David Rutley, said: “The Overseas Territories are
an important part of the British Family, and our shared values such as support for democracy and the rule of law underpin this close relationship. “Our new Joint Declaration sets out more clearly than ever how the UK and Overseas Territories will work closer together on the opportunities and challenges of the modern world.” Premier Hon Charles Washington Misick stated: “A resetting of the relationship between the OTS and the UK to be more future-facing considering the realities of the current global trends is welcomed.
“I look forward to a strategic engagement on delivery of the commitments.” Other commitments in the agreement include investigating improvements to how the UK provides financial support to its territories and agreeing to speak with one voice on the international stage, such as at the United Nations. It also creates more opportunities for the OTs to take on responsibilities where they want to, such as around transparency measures, and through the development of compacts. The compacts will set out roles
and responsibilities on specific issues bespoke to each community. The UK will seek to agree to these detailed bilateral agreements with each of the OTs, the statement reads. The Joint Declaration includes a number of key commitments by the UK, which will be a key part of the new UK Overseas Territories strategy announced by the previous Foreign Secretary earlier this year. The strategy will pave the way for the UK and British Overseas Territories to work more closely on shared opportunities and challenges.
First batch of home improvement applications approved The first batch of home improvement works, totalling $1,950,000 has been approved by the Housing Committee. The committee announced that on December 7, 2023, it concluded its deliberations on the first batch of applicants who submitted for home improvement under Programme Two. Out of the 12 batches of applicants, the initial group has been approved for home improvement works, marking a significant step in enhancing living conditions within our community, a press release from the Department of Housing and Community Renewal stated. These essential home improvement works, valued at a total of US$50,000 per applicant, are set to commence in the new year.
Of the lot for batch one, 10 are from Grand Turk, nine from South Caicos, eight from North Caicos, six from Providenciales, three from Salt Cay and two from Middle Caicos. “This significant investment is not only a boon for the selected applicants but also marks a positive development for the entire community. The Housing Committee recognises the importance of this initiative, not only for the homeowners but also for local contractors who will benefit through the Framework Agreement for Programme Two,” the release added. The approved works are expected to generate numerous job opportunities throughout the islands, contributing to economic growth.
The Housing Committee recognises the importance of this initiative, not only for the homeowners but also for local contractors
Unfortunately, seven applicants did not pass the home inspection, and as a result, their applications for home improvement have been refused. In addition, three applicants were deferred due to the conditions of their homes. Repairs alone may be insufficient, and further evaluation is needed to determine the appropriate course of action. The approved works are scheduled to commence in the new year, bringing tangible improvements to the selected homes. This investment not only enhances the quality of living for the selected homeowners but also positively impacts the local
community through job creation. The committee said it is gearing up for the next phase and informed that inspections for batch two are scheduled to begin early 2024. “Individuals selected under batch two will be contacted by the Housing and Community Renewal Department to schedule a convenient date and time for their homes to be inspected.” For Programme Three: Community Renewal and Infilling, 14 applicants were selected for home inspections. In early January, the department will be contacting homeowners to schedule a home inspection at their convenience. The release noted that
the initiative aligns with the department’s commitment to create a better living environment for all residents. These programmes are aimed to enhance the quality of life for families and contribute to the overall development of our community whilst fostering economic opportunities for local contractors. The committee and by extension the ministry extended gratitude to all applicants for their interest and patience in this process. The Housing Committee remains dedicated to the successful implementation of Programme Two and looks forward to the positive transformations it will bring to our community.

The session was well received
Beaches help almost 100 students learn the art of tie-dye Nearly 100 grade six and special education students from the Enid Capron Primary School were recently taught the art of tie-dye (tie and dye) with support from the staff at the Beaches Turks and Caicos resort. During the session, members of the entertainment, housekeeping and public relations teams shared in the excitement with the students and teachers of the institution. The partnership was aimed at creating a positive, creative impact on the educational development of the children of the Turks and Caicos Islands. According to information from Beaches, the educational partnership between the Sandals Foundation and one of its adopted schools, “continues to bear fruit as the students and teachers were able to see their creative designs being unfolded right before their eyes”. Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, Heidi Clarke shared, “the teamwork that we continue to experience with the
different departments on resort being able to use their talents in making the lives of children and community better is what we represent as a brand. “We are grateful for the support that we continue to receive from the leaders at the different schools in the Turks and Caicos as we do our part in fostering the educational development throughout the Caribbean.” Vice Principal of the school, Nelene Swann while welcoming the partnership, expressed her excitement for the students to learn a new skill. She noted: “The Beaches Turks and Caicos resort team taught all the grade six and the special education students the art of tie and dye. Each student had the opportunity to help in inspiring their own unique design and at the end of the session, the level of satisfaction was evident from them. This partnership is an invaluable one as Beaches Turks and Caicos and Sandals Foundation continue to give back to those who are most
in need throughout the Turks and Caicos.” Head Boy of the institution, Hareph Saintus, after completing his design shared, “I’m so excited to see all these designs that we were taught today. While watching my classmates with the Beaches Turks and Caicos team, I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to not only show us how to do the designs but to allow us to be involved in making them. I feel good now knowing that this shirt that I will be wearing has my own design. This was my hand-made design. It feels good.” Romain Roach from the entertainment department noted, “As a Sandals Foundation Ambassador, I was delighted to come and share with these students. I enjoyed seeing them tap into their creativity as we provided the expertise to help them bring their own designs to life. “Children learn best when they are involved in the process, and I am delighted we were able to bring this hands-on experience.”

Christmas Message from the Premier Hon C. Washington Misick My fellow Turks and Caicos Islanders, Residents, Guests, and Visitors to our shores: Christmas is an exciting time of the year! We must not forget the reason for the season. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulder. And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” - Isaiah 9:6 Christmas is a time of reflection and thanksgiving for the blessings of the holy child and the gift of eternal life his advent has brought to humanity. It is in that spirit we should celebrate with family, friends, neighbours, and countrymen. It is a time to remember the triumphs and losses of the last year. Triumphs in our achievements and reflections on the memories of those we’ve lost along the way. It is a time to hold family and friends dear around the Christmas tree to express our love and gratitude for all that they mean to us. It is time to stretch our hands to those in need of help, the same
way that God Almighty has stretched his hands to bless us; we should be a blessing onto others. God has been faithful and gracious to our beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands. He has preserved our land, and despite the challenges, we remain a peaceful people and country. My appeal is that we do not trespass on his favour, but we make every effort to show appreciation because the faces we see are the many faces of God, and those that we help will only add to our own blessings. My government has made significant efforts to provide for its people and to safeguard our lives and livelihoods and will continue to do so. Thanks to all of you who supported and prayed for us in the last year. On behalf of the government, myself, my wife, and family, I wish you a very Merry Christmas, a safe and funfilled time with loved ones and friends. May God bless you, and may He continue to bless our Turks and Caicos Islands. Merry Christmas!

Have a backup plan The thing you rely on may stop working
I encourage each of you to have a backup plan. We take too many things for granted and think that everything will work fine. We do not expect anything to go wrong. Early this month, I was in Miami, Florida. My roaming feature on my phone did not work so I purchased a GPS feature from the car rental place. Late that night, the GPS battery died and the charger that was provided to me did not charge the GPS and so I was lost driving in Miami. I did not know what to do. I stopped at Walmart to get free Wi-Fi and get the directions to where I wanted to go. I saved the directions, and I was able to get to my destination. There was another occasion in which I left my laptop on the floor. I went next door to one of my units

and when I returned the water heater burst. My laptop was full of water, and I could not retrieve my information. I ended up getting a server and still backup just in case something goes wrong. What is your backup plan? Do you have one? Some may argue that having a backup plan defeats your purpose of trying to achieve something
because if you know you have a backup plan, then you may lose your focus and give up easily on the first plan knowing that you have a backup one. While there is some merit to the above point, having a backup plan can save you time and money. If your plan fails, you may have to start from scratch, and this may involve spending more money.
However, if you have a backup plan, and if your plan fails, you can resort to your backup plan. The point I am trying to make is to always have a backup plan. The things or people you rely on day to day may fail you. What are you going to do when that happens? What if you lose your job? Do you have a backup plan? What if you lose all your information? Have you backed it up? What if your plans do not work out, what will you do? In the same way you are encouraged to document your goals, you should also document your backup plan. Of course, no one should be living their lives thinking about whether their plans will fail or not but at the same time, we must know sometimes things do not go as planned so it is best to
have a backup plan. I hope you understand and appreciate the need for a backup plan. Now there are things that I don’t encourage a backup plan for and that is your marriage. I think when you get married, it is a commitment, and you enter it with the intention of a lifetime. Don’t go to marriage with a backup plan. I gave two examples in the introduction. I wish I had borrowed my wife’s USA phone chip, but I relied on the GPS thinking it would work all the time. It never occurred to me that the charger would die and not be able to recharge. In the example of the laptop, I wish I had backup regularly, but I did not and I lost all of my information. Having a backup plan will help you in a significant way so I encourage you to have one.
Quantifying the water, food, and energy nexus:
A call for resources sustainability and management in the TCI Earth’s natural resources are depleting fast, and supplies are not the only foreseeable hurdle, but the prices of these resources are becoming unaffordable. In the meantime, accessibility to these natural deposits is also diminishing rapidly worldwide. This means that the TCI is not immune! Its most basic resources are either emptying or would become inaccessible in the foreseeable future and in the event of a global catastrophe; the TCI is bound to suffer severely. Eventually, critical concerns have surfaced. The major questions most people are asking is, what is the TCI’s policy framework regarding water, food and energy management? What are the national sustainable development goals and how would the government accomplish them? And what would be the impact of a scarcity? Legislative frameworks surrounding these ideals should be developed relative to resource depletion, soaring prices and the inevitability of supply shortages emanating from the heightened global conflicts and possible

economic blockades. In the interim, these strategies would ensure sustainability and long-term financial viability of integrated water resources management, food and energy security. And considering TCI’s assured population growth, sustainability and long-term resilience would require national policy statements, to include infrastructure for the efficient management of these three resources and periods for validity and reviews. Moreover, legislators should know that 97 per cent of Earth’s water is salty and the remaining amount is mostly trapped beneath the Earth’s surface, in ice caps and glaciers. The quality of the
small volume that we have access to is either contaminated or requires processes for quality and mechanisms to get it to us. Meanwhile, in the TCI there is an acute water stress problem and extreme climatic conditions resulting in high temperatures and prolonged droughts further exacerbate the problem. And because there are no freshwater sources like rivers – at ground level – water supply is mostly acquired from reverse osmosis desalination. In developing countries especially, a decline in investments in research and infrastructure has increased water scarcity and irrigation systems and these events, bolstered by severe
temperatures, would certainly aggravate agricultural produce, which is expected to disrupt TCI’s food security initiatives. Henceforth, global food security will remain relevant for many years to come and although the agroecological approach to food security offers some guarantees for improving yields; still, the TCI cannot secure food security, unless the government substantially increases investment and pursues policy reforms. This is not all though, highquality soil is also vital for healthy food production and poor farming methods, such as monoculture – planting the same crop in the same place – depletes soil nutrients. I should advise that policymakers
should approach energy in like manner. As we know, fossil fuels are important in all aspects of our lives, from powering up our homes, to travel, and manufacturing; however, lately, soaring prices from geopolitical tensions have threatened supply, availability and affordability. What is most concerning for the TCI is, like groundwater and agro-commodities, fossil fuels are depleting rapidly worldwide, and in the TCI. The world is facing extreme water, food and energy challenges from both the supply and demand perspectives. However, this impending resource depletion can be mitigated through governmentled resource policy change.

Unveiling the Unsung Hero of Christmas: The Roman Census I was traveling recently. When I got to the airport, I learned that there was a new requirement for travellers to get into the country I was going to. You had to fill out an online immigration form. That meant you had to scan a barcode, fill out a form, wait for a confirmation email, and then show it to an attendant BEFORE getting in line to check in. It took about 30 minutes, several messages to friends, a plea for divine help, and three attempts before I was able to complete the form. When I reached my destination and got to the immigration desk, the female officer kindly told me she did not see my information, so I had to complete the same online form again, this time on paper. I have been practicing being thankful in all situations as the scripture encourages us, so though I wanted to scream, I thanked God for a good flight, a kind immigration officer, and several other things and promptly filled out the form and

went to collect my bags which took an hour because the conveyor belt was not working. God is so good at teaching us lessons. I know the word “bureaucracy” has become a catchphrase for many things, but the long and short of it is that I do not like bureaucracy. No one does. And when the Roman emperor wanted to fill his coffers and decided to call for a worldwide census, Joseph and Mary would not have been happy campers. Imagine the disruption to their everyday, predictable lives. However, the census was a catalyst for the fulfilment of the birth of Jesus
Christ. As Luke’s Gospel recounts (Luke 2:1-7), the census mandated by Augustus required all men to register in their ancestral towns. This decree prompted Joseph, engaged to Mary, to embark on a journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the city of David, his ancestor. This frustrating journey, driven by the Roman Empire’s bureaucratic demands, became the backdrop for one of the most significant events in human history – the birth of Jesus, the Messiah. In the humble surroundings of Bethlehem, amidst the hustle and bustle of the census,
God chose to reveal His Son to the world. While intended to assert Roman authority, the census unknowingly played a crucial role in fulfilling the divine prophecy of the Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem. This decree brought Joseph and Mary to the place where Jesus would be born, fulfilling the ancient prophecy that the Messiah would be born in the City of David. That the census led to worldwide travel and the coming together of different cultures and languages is a beautiful backdrop to Jesus’ birth that reminds us that as recipients of God’s grace, we are to
take Jesus’ message of love, hope, and joy to all the world. In a world governed by political manoeuvring and ambitions, the census serves as a reminder that God’s plans often unfold unexpectedly, weaving seemingly ordinary events into a tapestry of divine purpose. Though initiated for bureaucratic reasons, the Roman census became an instrument in God’s hands, setting the stage for the birth of the world’s Saviour. As we celebrate Christmas, let us reflect on the unexpected significance of the Roman census. It reminds us that God’s plans are far grander than our own and that even the most frustrating events can play a part in His divine purpose. And let us show kindness to those in authority, even when they make decisions we cannot understand, because, unwittingly, they just may be doing the will of God. Remember this, though: amid bureaucratic frustration, YOU ARE LOVED.
Don’t become an easy victim of crime this holiday season
Greetings my fellow Turks and Caicos islanders! The holiday shopping season is officially upon us once again. This should be a time of giving, joy, blessings and family celebration. Unfortunately, with the uptick of senseless crimes these beautiful by nature islands are experiencing, it could limit us from the way we traditionally shop and celebrate. This time of the year can become a time of sorrow and misfortunes for many who might fall victim to crime due to letting their guards down. Being caught of guard, gives criminals the opportunity to prey on the most vulnerable. With this in mind, as you go about your daily business, below are a few safety tips you should be cognizant off during the holiday season and year-round. We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware. Please share this information with family, friends and neighbours. * Avoid driving alone, especially late at night. * Always set your vehicle alarm or use an anti-theft device. * If you must shop at night, park in a well-lighted area. * Avoid parking next to vehicles

with dark tinted windows. * Park as close as possible to your destination and take notice of who are around and where you parked. * Never leave your car unoccupied, unlocked with the motor running or with children inside. * Do not leave packages or valuables visible on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. * Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car. * Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door. * When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. * Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area. * If possible, ask store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location or walk in groups.
AUTOMATED TELLER MACHINE (ATM) * ATM withdrawals should be done during daylight hours. If it’s necessary at night, choose one that is located inside a store or well-lighted location. * Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you. * Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location. SHOPPING: * Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. * Avoid wearing expensive jewellery. * If possible, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, a purse or exposed wallet. * Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert of your surroundings.
* Pay for purchases with a debit or credit card whenever possible. * Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home in the event it’s stolen or compromised. * Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of mobility to avoid mishaps. * Keep your cell phone easy accessible in case of emergency. * If you feel you are about to be mugged, activate your panic button on your vehicle keys. This will draw attention to the surroundings and possibly scare off a potential mugger.
AT HOME: * Be extra cautious about remembering to lock doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. * When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbour or family member watch your house. * Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer. * Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied. * Large displays of holiday gifts
should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. * When setting up a Christmas tree or other holiday display, make sure doors and passageways are clear inside your home. * Be sure your Christmas tree is mounted on a sturdy base so children, elderly persons or family pets cannot pull it over on themselves. * If you use lights on your Christmas tree ensure the wiring is not damaged or frayed. Frayed or damaged wiring can cause a fire. STRANGERS AT YOUR DOOR: * Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts or repairman. * Ensure that your door is equipped with a peephole and a chain lock that prevents it from opening all the way. Don’t let the holiday Grinch steal your joy. As always, in the event of an emergency dial 911 immediately. Be well Be Kind Be Safe and happy holidays!

Hints for effective communication “Getting messages across depends on the available time for perception of messages which priorities are determined by relevance or pertinence.” I just explained to you, within a 140-character limit, what is essential for communication to be effective. It is the art of deduction using a sniper-level skill. “Get to the point” if you want it even shorter. Strategic communication is communicating essential information to selected audiences, and ensuring that the communication is noticed by the senses, sticks in the mind, and affects the thinking, behaviour, or activities of the audience. Some use a flood of text as if they are trying to be remembered by an audience for the next 30 days. For some opening the floodgates can be a sign of their desperation. How about “Classical Conditioning”? Classical conditioning was discovered many years ago by physiologist Ivan Pavlov. He researched salivation in dogs in response to being fed. Dogs salivate in response to the food in front of them.
CDR BUD SLABBAERT Commander Bud Slabbaert from Sint Maarten is the initiator and chairman of the Caribbean Aviation Meetup conferences. Throughout his professional activities, he was involved in international aviation promotion, development and management matters in the region and in Europe.
However, he noticed that dogs were already salivating whenever they heard the footsteps of the person bringing the food. He experimented further by ringing a bell when offering food. Eventually ringing a bell without the food would already make the dog salivate. So, keep the communication short as ringing a bell. Make it as tasty as delicious food. Keep it short but do it maybe more often and audiences will love to hear all portions of your wisdom. Even your name being announced should make an audience salivate. The wisdom that a message comes across better when one can be extremely short dates back

They had facial hair, instead of eye shadow and lipstick. They went barefoot instead of on high heels, and they had hands like mitts needed for powerful hammering and chiselling. Some historians even suggest that before that in the prehistorian ages, messages were shorter because the human vocabulary was limited to just some variations of aah, ooh and uhh sounds. Times have indeed changed. That we made tremendous progress is proven by the fact that now some
people use 140-character tweets to tell their friends on social media when they go to the bathroom or in what aisle of the supermarket they are. What effect do social media have on humans? There are two schools of thought. On one extreme side, you have the scientific approach suggesting that it results in brain shrinkage. On the other extreme side is the snake-oilquackery approach claiming that it will expand the universe. Between those two extreme opposites communication anarchy thrives. Expressing casual words in an entertainment setting may be a virtue; in a professional situation, it is a waste of energy and can cause a backlash. What about the millions of people using social media to send billions of messages? In communication, it doesn’t matter how many people you reach, if you reach the wrong people. Billions of messages indicate that there is such an abundance of information that there are limits to how much one can or wants to absorb. Instead of being flabbergasted by the mouth-watering kazillion numbers, keep the numbers 8 and 30 in mind. The average attention span is only 8 seconds for a headline and part of a first sentence; an elevator pitch-type introduction takes 30 seconds. Social media cannot stretch time.
There are other things about social media. When signing up for a social medium, one may feel that people are following. And some love to finally get some attention that they otherwise wouldn’t get. Yet, some do not want any part of it and rather prefer secrecy or obscurity. The number of followers on social media is neither proof of market share nor approval; it could be curiosity. The online media, business and private websites included, have created a time-saving mechanism: “Marketing by Permission”! It simply means that if it doesn’t attract the viewer or reader, it is clicked away in a New York minute. That should also make it very clear that it takes much consideration of what will be communicated and how. No text dumping! Online media are easy to access for both those who promote and those who seek information. But it does not mean that anything published is also actually viewed by the targeted audience. The ease of navigating to find the desired information may influence the time spent on the media or website. Smart communication is wellthought-out communication with a strategy behind it. It is not about weaponising but rather about appealing words. One has a huge arsenal of words available and an endless way of combining them in sentences and messages for the sake of appealing texts. On top of it, there is a selection of channels of communication. Not to forget the element of timing. So, yes, with this tremendous array of opportunities for communicating extremely effectively, missing the target is most likely human error by the presenter. Conclusion in three pointing words: exercise strategic communications. It creates a foundation for influence.

Christmas Message from the Leader of the Opposition - Hon Edwin A. Astwood Season’s Greetings “This Christmas, many of us will be looking forward to taking a break and spending time with friends, family, and loved ones. “Many people will also take the time to help others. Kindheartedness and solidarity are vital throughout the year – but it is especially important at this time of year. “And of course, for many Christmas is not a holiday at all – for example, for the people in our Health Services and indeed all of our Law Enforcement Services. Your efforts are appreciated all through the year. But they are particularly appreciated at Christmas time. “If we can, let’s also do our bit
to spread some Christmas cheer – either by helping someone or a family or simply by being a good neighbour or friend. “And I also want to ask people to think about those who have lost loved ones in this year and will be spending their first Christmas without their presence. Loneliness can be a terrible thing at Christmas. So, we should look out for each other. “All of us across our Islands have too often focused on the differences between us, rather than on what ties us together. “So, I hope the magic of Christmas casts its spell on people this year, helping families and friends remember what it is that
unites them, not the things that divide them. “I hope it reminds us that, despite the sound and fury of our national debate, the bonds of family, community, and country are still deep and lasting. “And wherever you are – whether you are in the Turks & Caicos Islands or further afield, whether you are with friends and family or on your own – I hope you have the best possible time over this festive period. So on behalf of my Astwood, Taylor, Robinson, and Seymour Family, and on behalf of my Partythe Peoples’ Democratic Movement. “I wish all of you a very merry Christmas and a happy 2024.”

Dorian and COVID-19 cost Bahamas one year’s GDP The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved doubling its crisis financing facility for The Bahamas to $200m after combined Dorian and COVID losses matched this nation’s annual economic output. Documents seen by Tribune Business show the multilateral lender’s executive directors on December 7, 2023, agreed to increase this nation’s contingent credit facility (CCF) by 100 percent from the original $100m to enable it to cope with health-related pandemics as well as catastrophic hurricanes. Accompanying reports revealed that The Bahamas is estimated to have suffered $13.1bn in total losses as a result of Dorian and the pandemic, a sum that is almost equal to the $13.526bn economic output - or gross domestic product (GDP) - this country is forecast to generate during the current 20232024 fiscal year. And, further illustrating The Bahamas’ need to have financing available to meet the demands of future emergencies, the IDB report said hurricane-related catastrophes have inflicted more than $6.7bn in total damages over the two decades between 2002 and 2022, with that figure exceeding more than 50 percent of this nation’s 2021 GDP. As for COVID-19, the IDB
Scenes of devastation in Abaco after Hurricane Dorian
revealed that the pandemic has been responsible for 844 deaths in The Bahamas through to July 12, 2023, with some 38,000 persons almost one in every ten residents having been infected by the virus over a three-and-a-half year period. Government’s “extraordinary” spending to combat COVID is close to half a billion dollars, standing at around $465m at endJune 2023. The Government used $80m of the original $100m crisis financing facility to address “the humanitarian crisis” created by Hurricane Dorian in Grand Bahama and Abaco and, with its
full replenishment approved back in August, the IDB has now moved to grant the Government’s request that it be doubled to $200m. “In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in May 2020 the bank approved a new expansion of the CCF to include public health risks,” the IDB confirmed. “In this context, due to the country’s high exposure and vulnerability to public health events, the Government requested the bank to modify the contingent loan to increase the total loan amount by an additional $100m.... to a total of $200m in order to incorporate coverage for public
health risks.” Justifying the expanded emergency financing, the IDB pointed to The Bahamas’ long-standing vulnerability to hurricane-related natural disasters, with storms only set to increase in severity and frequency due to the impact of climate change. “In the past 50 years, 20 hurricanes have hit the territory of The Bahamas,” its report said. “Just in the past seven years, three major (Category 4 and 5) hurricanes have made passage through the country. Hurricane Matthew, in 2016, which greatly impacted the country’s major population centres in New Providence and Grand Bahama, as well as the district of North Andros, causing damage and losses of $519m. “Hurricane Irma, in 2017, that affected the provision of basic services in Grand Bahama, and which caused damage in Ragged Island, Acklins, Inagua and Bimini, with an estimated total damage and losses of $118m. “Hurricane Dorian, in 2019, affected approximately 29,472 persons in Abaco and Grand Bahama, surpassing the loss and damages of previous hurricanes Joaquin, Matthew and Irma combined and caused an estimated damage and losses of close to $3.2bn. Total damage from disasters in The Bahamas from 2002 to 2022 (over $6.7bn) is equivalent to more than 50 percent of the country’s economy in 2021.” Hurricane Dorian’s devastation, when added to the estimated $9.5bn losses inflicted by COVID-19 between 2020 and 2023, means the two catastrophic events caused combined damages that are virtually equal to the Bahamian economy’s total output for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. “The Bahamas’ exposure to public health risks is evidenced mostly by the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic, which caused 844 deaths and 38,000 confirmed cases as of July 12, 2023, but also by other epidemic outbreaks of vector-borne diseases like dengue, which in 2011 registered more than 3,500 cases, and chikungunya that reached around 800 cases in 2014,” the IDB report added. “Additionally, the country is highly exposed to infectious disease outbreaks in the aftermath of severe natural disasters like tropical cyclones. The potential economic impact of public health emergencies is high. National losses due to COVID-19 for the period 20202023 were estimated at $9.5bn. “Although there was no infrastructure destruction, this cost was 2.7 times that of damages and losses due to Hurricane Dorian. Furthermore, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimated that the overall extraordinary public expenses to address the pandemic reached approximately $450m between 2020 and 2022.” The latter figure has now advanced slightly higher to just below $470m. Illustrating just why The Bahamas needs instant access to emergency funding in the wake of disasters, the IDB report added: “The country’s vulnerability to natural disasters and the potential of public health emergencies, under the current macroeconomic juncture, highlight the importance of implementing measures that can help increase The Bahamas’ economic and fiscal resilience to disaster risk. “The two recent emergencies caused by external shocks, Hurricane Dorian and the pandemic, are estimated to have cost the country $13.1bn.” It also warned that climate change will increase flood-exposed areas in Nassau by 8 percent over the next quarter-century to 2050. “Disaster risk in the country is considered high due mainly to socioeconomic factors, such as the location of communities and infrastructure, mostly in coastal areas,” the IDB said. “These trends are likely to worsen because of climate change. “With most of its territory a few metres above mean sea level, The Bahamas is highly vulnerable to sea level rise and storm surge associated with increasing intensity of extreme weather events due to the impacts of climate change. Likely impacts include coastal flooding and erosion, mangrove retreat, decreased seagrass bed productivity and saltwater intrusion into existing small lenses of fresh groundwater.

Life in prison for Haiti exsenator over president’s murder A US court on Tuesday sentenced a former Haitian senator to life in prison for his role in the assassination of the Caribbean country’s president Jovenel Moise in 2021. Clad in a brown prison uniform, handcuffed and with shackles around his ankles, Joseph Joel John, 52, pleaded for mercy before the verdict was announced in federal court in Miami. John said he never intended to murder Moise but instead wanted him brought before Haitian courts for his alleged mismanagement of the country. The plot spiralled out of control when other conspirators decided to
assassinate the president John said, adding he believed that backing out at that point would have gotten him killed. “Your honour, have mercy on me,” he implored the judge, speaking in French. “I’m sorry for this heinous crime that should not have happened.” The former senator had admitted earlier to providing vehicles and other resources to support the plot, as well as meeting with several other conspirators in both Haiti and Florida, according to court documents. John was the third person indicted over the July 2021 slaying of Moise at his residence near the
Private companies join forces to release dengue-fighting mosquitoes in the Caribbean In a ground-breaking move to combat the alarming surge of dengue cases across the Caribbean, two private companies have joined forces in an ambitious project aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly virus. Orbit Services Partners Incorporation, a Barbadosregistered firm, has entered into a strategic partnership with Verily, a San Francisco-based health technology company, to release specially bred mosquitoes with bacterium capable of blocking the dengue virus. FIGHTING DENGUE THROUGH SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION Orbit chairman Anthony Da Silva revealed that the two companies have been diligently working on this collaborative endeavour and have engaged with government officials in the Caribbean region. Reports are that the companies have been meeting with government officials in the region as they hope to launch the project early next year, said Orbit chairman Anthony Da Silva. TARGETING HIGH-RISK CARIBBEAN NATIONS The initiative aims to target several nations grappling with dengue outbreaks, including Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Maarten, St. Martin, Suriname, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti.
Similar projects employing the Wolbachia bacterium have already yielded positive results in various parts of the world. The process involves infecting mosquitoes with Wolbachia within a controlled laboratory environment and subsequently releasing them into the wild. As these mosquitoes reproduce, they pass on the bacterium to their offspring, effectively preventing the dengue virus from replicating within the mosquitoes’ gut. A THREE-YEAR ENDEAVOUR IMPACTED BY THE PANDEMIC Da Silva emphasized that the partnership has been in the making for the past three years but encountered unexpected delays due to the global pandemic. The proposal is currently pending approval from individual Caribbean nations, marking a critical step in the project’s progression. UNPRECEDENTED DENGUE OUTBREAK CHALLENGES THE REGION The Caribbean, along with the Americas, has witnessed an alarming surge in dengue cases this year, surpassing a grim milestone with over four million reported cases—the highest number recorded since the inception of dengue record-keeping in 1980. Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The United States has jurisdiction in the case because the plot was partly organized in Florida, home to a sizeable Haitian diaspora. A businessman holding dual Haitian and Chilean citizenship, Rodolphe Jaar, and retired Colombian military officer German Rivera were sentenced earlier this year to life in prison for their role in Moise’s assassination. The 53-year-old Moise was gunned down on July 7, 2021 at his private residence by a hired group of about 20 military-trained Colombians. His security detail did not intervene to protect him. Haiti has spiralled into deeper chaos since Moise’s death. No election has been held and he has not been succeeded. Gangs control around 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, and violent crimes such kidnappings for ransom, armed robbery and carjackings continue to escalate in the impoverished nation.

Bahamas: ‘Judges should be held accountable’—Attorney General ATTORNEY General Ryan Pinder said he supports introducing a disciplinary system for the judiciary, adding judges should be held accountable for misconduct like everyone else. His comment in the Senate this week came after Senator Michela Barnett-Ellis called for a system where formal complaints can be made against judges. “There are mistakes in law which can be appealed, and then there is behaviour which is inappropriate and impacts the confidence in the justice system, and that must be addressed,” she said. Mr Pinder agreed and said he would speak to the chief justice. “For years,” he said, “the country has suffered under a regime where judgements and decisions have been delayed unnecessarily in certain instances for years and years and years, which has a direct affect on those who are looking to get justice from the courts themselves. And it is inequitable. It is unfair. In the private sector, you would be terminated. You would not have a job.” “I support the notion that the honourable member raised about having some form of disciplinary framework for the judiciary. Everybody else has to answer to
Attorney General Ryan Pinder
that. The judiciary should have to answer for instances which justifies discipline.” The senators debated a compendium of court bills to improve the judicial system yesterday. Mr Pinder revealed that the government bought space on Shirley Street and conveyed the Rodney Bain building to build a new judicial complex that would house at least 19 courts. Construction will begin next year. The government, he said, will demolish the Rodney Bain building. Complaints about the
deteriorating state of court facilities have been long-standing. Earlier this year, Chief Justice Ian Winder lamented the courts’ infrastructure, saying a new complex is needed. Mr Pinder said that new family and juvenile courts will be built next year as well. “The facility will allow for the confidentiality of sensitive family matters that will be adjudicated at that location,” he said. “Another important component of these courts are the availability of mediation rooms and expertise for pretrial dispute resolution, especially in sensitive matters such as family matters.”

Troubles legacy act: Ireland takes human rights case against UK The Irish government is to begin a legal challenge against the UK government over its decision to offer immunity for Troubles-era crimes. The UK’s controversial Troubles legacy act became law in September, despite opposition from Dublin and all Northern Ireland’s political parties. Critics argued the law gave an amnesty to killers and removed access to justice for victims. Ireland will bring a case under the European Convention on Human Rights. Victims and survivors have already taken the government to court in the High Court in Belfast. The 30-year conflict cost more than 3,500 lives and left thousands more seriously injured. The bill was introduced by Boris Johnson’s government in 2021 in a bid to “draw a line under the Troubles”. The legislation also brought an end to all new inquests and civil actions related to the conflict. In a statement, Tánaiste (Irish Deputy PM) Micheál Martin
said: “This decision was taken after much thought and careful consideration. “I regret that we find ourselves in a position where such a choice had to be made.” He added that the UK government had “pursued legislation unilaterally” despite the concerns of the Irish government and others. “We are not alone in our concerns. Serious reservations about this legislation have also been raised by a number of international observers, including the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,” Mr Martin added. “Most importantly, this legislation is opposed by people in Northern Ireland, especially the victims and families who will be most directly impacted by this Act.” Opponents, including victims groups and Stormont parties, have argued the legacy bill will remove access to justice. The UK government has argued
The 30-year conflict cost more than 3,500 lives and left thousands more seriously injured
that the bill is an attempt to draw a line under the events of the past. In September, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris said the Royal Assent of the Troubles legacy bill marked a “significant milestone as the government aims to deliver on our pledge to deliver better outcomes for those most affected by the Troubles, while helping society to look forward”. He added that the bill offers “a real opportunity to deliver greater information, accountability and acknowledgement to victims and families, moving away from
established mechanisms that have left far too many empty-handed”. The legislation will lead to the establishment of an Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR). The aim of this new organisation is to help families find out more about the circumstances of how their loved ones were killed or seriously injured. Self-confessed perpetrators who provide a truthful account of their actions to the ICRIR can be granted immunity from prosecution. Mr Heaton-Harris said the
commission was part of a move to “build a legacy process founded on integrity, expertise and fairness”. Amnesty International said the Irish government was “doing the right thing” for victims of the Troubles by taking the case. The human rights organisation the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) said it was “the right decision and a necessary one”. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald also welcomed the Irish government’s move, as did SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood. (BBC)
UK tipped for speedier rate cut after surprise inflation fall A surprise fall in inflation in November has raised hopes that the Bank of England will begin cutting interest rates sooner than expected. Inflation - the rate prices rise at fell from 4.6% to 3.9% last month, the lowest for more than two years. The Bank has repeatedly increased rates to try to control inflation, driving up mortgage repayments for millions. But some economists think it may start cutting them in the first half of 2024, much earlier than previously forecast. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that falling petrol prices were largely behind the surprise drop in inflation last month. Slowing prices for food and household goods also contributed. But while inflation is well down from its peak in 2022, it is still almost double the Bank of England’s 2% target, and many households will not feel better off as energy bills and borrowing costs remain high. “It remains vital no one forgets that whilst inflation is falling it doesn’t mean prices are falling,
Despite gas and electricity prices being lower than last year, most households will actually pay more for energy this winter than in 2022 because the Government support for bills is no longer in place
and that not everyone has had an inflation busting wage increase over the past couple of years,” said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. “Some families will be dreading this Christmas, feeling guilty about the presents they’ve been able to afford or worried about paying off debts they’ve racked up just to afford the basic festive treats,” she added. Petrol and diesel prices hit record levels in 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine and global oil prices surged.
But pump prices have fallen back and are now at their lowest level for more than two years. A litre of unleaded costs about £1.43 on average, a price last seen at UK forecourts in October 2021. Meanwhile, the prices of a variety of baked goods, including white and wholemeal sliced bread, along with packs of cakes fell between October and November after rising a year ago. Milk, cheese and egg prices rises also slowed, but olive oil, sugar and onion costs remain much higher, meaning food prices are
still 9.2% more expensive than this time in 2022 . The last time inflation in the UK was lower than 3.9% was in September 2021 when it was 3.1%. Most economists had expected UK inflation to fall to 4.3% last month. But while the cost of living crisis may be starting to ease, many households and businesses remain under pressure. Chef Seema Dalvi, at Dalvee restaurant in Poulton, Lancashire told the BBC that while price rises were slowing down “inflation is definitely killing us”.
She used to order all her ingredients from one supplier but now shops around for the best deals. But it is not just higher food prices Ms Dalvi has to contend with. “Energy prices, rents, business rates, ingredient prices, alcohol prices, staff salaries, it’s a lot,” she said. Despite gas and electricity prices being lower than last year, most households will actually pay more for energy this winter than in 2022 because government support for bills is no longer in place. The Bank of England has also put up interest rates 14 times since December 2021 to try to slow price rises. Rates are now 5.25%, a 15-year high, leading to higher borrowing costs for mortgages but also higher savings rates. Last week the Bank’s governor, Andrew Bailey, ruled out cutting rates anytime soon, despite weakening economic growth. However, on Wednesday Martin Beck, chief economic adviser to the EY Item Club, said the Bank would now find it harder to justify its “high for longer rhetoric around interest rates”.

Colorado Supreme Court kicks Trump off ballot, citing ‘insurrection’ Colorado’s Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump cannot run for president next year in the state, citing a constitutional insurrection clause. The court ruled 4-3 that Mr Trump was not an eligible candidate because he had engaged in an insurrection over the US Capitol riot nearly three years ago. It does not stop Mr Trump running in the other states and his campaign says it will appeal to the US Supreme Court. The decision, they said, was “completely flawed”. The ruling only mentions the state’s primary election on 5 March, when Republican voters will choose their preferred candidate for president. But it could affect the general election in Colorado next November. It is the first ever use of Section 3 of the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment to disqualify a presidential candidate. Tuesday’s decision - which has been placed on hold pending appeal until next month - only applies in Colorado. Similar attempts to kick Mr Trump off the ballot in New Hampshire, Minnesota and Michigan have failed. The justices wrote in their ruling: “We do not reach these conclusions lightly. We are mindful of the magnitude and weight of the questions now before us. “We are likewise mindful of our solemn duty to apply the law, without fear or favor, and without being swayed by public reaction to the decisions that the law mandates we reach.” The decision reverses an earlier
Donald Trump is still favourite to win the 2024 US Presidential elections
one from a Colorado judge, who ruled that the 14th Amendment’s insurrection ban did not apply to presidents because the section did not explicitly mention them. That same lower court judge also found that Mr Trump had participated in an insurrection in the US Capitol riot. His supporters stormed Congress on 6 January 2021 while lawmakers were certifying President Joe Biden’s election victory. The Colorado Supreme Court’s decision does not go into effect until 4 January 2024. That is the eve of the deadline for the state to print its presidential primary ballots. Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, called the ruling “completely flawed” and lambasted the justices, who
were all appointed by Democratic governors. “Democrat Party leaders are in a state of paranoia over the growing, dominant lead President Trump has amassed in the polls,” Mr Cheung said in a statement. “They have lost faith in the failed Biden presidency and are now doing everything they can to stop the American voters from throwing them out of office next November.” Mr Cheung added that Mr Trump’s legal team would “swiftly file an appeal” to the US Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a 6 to 3 majority. Representatives for Mr Biden’s re-election bid declined to comment on the Colorado ruling. But a senior Democrat affiliated with the campaign told CBS News,
the BBC’s US partner, that the decision would help Democrats by supporting their argument that the US Capitol riot was an attempted insurrection. The source said it would also aid Democrats in showcasing “the stark differences” between Mr Trump and Mr Biden. Republican lawmakers condemned the decision, including House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, who called it “a thinly veiled partisan attack”. “Regardless of political affiliation, every citizen registered to vote should not be denied the right to support our former president and the individual who is the leader in every poll of the Republican primary,” he said. On the campaign trail Mr Trump’s Republican primary
rivals also assailed the ruling, with Vivek Ramaswamy pledging to withdraw his name from the ballot if Mr Trump’s candidacy is not reinstated. Mr Trump, speaking at a campaign event in Iowa on Tuesday night, did not address the ruling. But a fundraising email sent by his campaign to supporters said “this is how dictatorships are born”. The Colorado Republican Party also responded, saying it would withdraw from the state’s primary process if the ruling was allowed to stand. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (Crew), the group that brought the case, welcomed the ruling. “It is not only historic and justified, but is necessary to protect the future of democracy in our country,” the group’s president, Noah Bookbinder, said in a statement. The 14th Amendment was ratified after the American Civil War. Section 3 was intended to block secessionists from returning to previous government roles once southern states re-joined the Union. It was used against Confederate president Jefferson Davis and his vice-president Alexander Stephens, both of whom had served in Congress. It has seldom been invoked since. Mr Trump lost the state of Colorado by a wide margin in the last presidential election. But if courts in more competitive states followed suit on Tuesday’s ruling, Mr Trump’s White House bid could face serious problems. (BBC)
US judge orders names of more than 170 Jeffrey Epstein associates to be released The names of more than 170 associates of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein could be made public next month after a ruling from a US judge. Prince Andrew is expected to be among them, if evidence is released from a woman who claims he groped her in 2001. The identities are being revealed under a settled lawsuit against sex trafficker and Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Anyone on the list has until 1 January to appeal to have their name removed. Epstein, a millionaire financier known to mix with high-profile figures like Prince Andrew, died in jail in 2019. His death, as he awaited federal sex-trafficking charges, was ruled to be a suicide by the New York

medical examiner. The 51-page ruling issued on Monday by New York Judge Loretta Preska calls for Epstein’s
connections to be “unsealed in full”. It is the latest filing in the case brought by Virginia Giuffre against
Maxwell, a former British socialite who is serving a 20-year prison term for the crimes she committed with Epstein. Ms Giuffre’s defamation lawsuit was brought in 2015 and settled in 2017, leaving the names of scores of Epstein associates under a courtordered seal. They include 40 documents of evidence from Johanna Sjoberg, who has claimed Prince Andrew groped her breast while sitting on a couch inside Epstein’s Manhattan apartment in 2001. Buckingham Palace has previously said the allegations are “categorically untrue”. Last year, the Duke of York paid millions to Ms Giuffre to settle a lawsuit she filed claiming that he sexually abused her when she was 17 years old.
Prince Andrew said he had never met Ms Giuffre and denied her allegations. In her ruling, Judge Preska noted that many of the individuals named in the lawsuit have already been publicly identified by the media or in Maxwell’s criminal trial. She added that many others “did not raise an objection” to the release of the documents. Some of the names on the list will remain sealed, including those belonging to child victims, the judge said in her ruling. US congressional Republicans are pushing to subpoena the flight logs for Epstein’s private plane. Convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor, Epstein had moved in social circles that included key figures in the world of business and politics. (BBC)

Embracing heart-healthy choices during the Christmas season doesn’t mean sacrificing the joy and indulgence of the festivities. It’s about making conscious decisions that prioritise well-being while still savouring the special moments of the season. As you navigate the array of culinary temptations that come with Christmas gatherings, remember that moderation is key. Enjoy the flavours of the season, but be mindful of portion sizes. Fill your plate with nutrientdense, heart-healthy options like lean proteins, whole grains, and an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Balancing richer dishes with these nourishing choices will not only support heart health but also provide a delightful and fulfilling dining experience. When it comes to dessert, it’s okay to indulge a little, but being mindful of your sugar intake is crucial for heart health. Opt for lighter, fruit-based desserts that are equally delicious and satisfying. By making intentional choices about the sweets you enjoy, you can maintain a balanced approach to festive eating. Furthermore, as you partake in the tradition of raising a glass in celebration, exercise caution and awareness. While a festive drink can add to the joy of the season, it’s essential to be mindful of alcohol consumption and its potential impact on heart health. Understanding your limits and
being mindful of your intake can help you savour the holiday cheer while safeguarding your cardiovascular well-being. Physical activity should also play a role in your holiday season. Joining in on a holiday dance or incorporating festive workouts into your schedule, finding opportunities for movement is crucial for maintaining heart health. By staying active, you can counteract the effects of indulgent holiday feasting and keep your cardiovascular fitness in check. In addition to making heartconscious choices about food and physical activity, fostering a spirit of mindfulness can further enhance your heart-healthy approach to Christmas celebrations. By savouring each bite, being present at the moment, and expressing gratitude for the nourishing and heart-healthy foods on your plate, you can embody the true essence of the season while honouring your well-being. In conclusion, by embracing moderation, prioritising hearthealthy options, and infusing mindfulness into your festive celebrations, you can relish the holiday with a renewed sense of well-being. Here’s to a Christmas season filled with love, joy, and heartconscious choices that honour the health of your most vital organ – your heart. Diana wore the Azagury dress for the first time at a dinner with the Mayor of Florence in 1985
Princess Diana dress sells for record £900,000 at auction A dress worn by Diana, Princess of Wales in 1985 has been sold at auction for 11 times its estimated price. The black, ballerina-length velvet evening dress was sold at Julien’s Auctions in Hollywood for a total of $1,148,080 (£904,262). It has broken a new fashion record as the most expensive dress, worn by Diana, sold at auction. The gown, which came with a matching illustration, was estimated to sell for $100,000 (£78,776). It features shoulder pads, a blue organza skirt, a large bow, and a sash. Diana first wore the dress in Florence, Italy in 1985 at a dinner while on a royal tour with her then-husband Charles, Prince of
Wales, and again to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986. The collector’s item was constructed with fabric chosen by world-renowned textile merchant Jakob Schlaepfer and featured metallic embroidered stars carefully threaded by the design team at Jacques Azagury. The ballerina skirt was considered a nod to her patronage of the English National Ballet and her love of dance. Previously, the most expensive dress worn by Diana and sold at auction was a 1991 velvet gown by Victor Edelstein which sold for $604,800 (£476,437) in January. That means Diana’s Jacques Azagury gown has nearly doubled the gap between first and second place.

TCICC leadership attends P3 Higher Education Summit The Turks and Caicos Islands Community College (TCICC) was recently represented at the recent P3 (Public, Private Partnership) Chair of the Board of Governors, Dr Barbara Ambrister and President/CEO Dr Candice Williams
Higher Education Summit, held at the Grand Hyatt in San Diego, California, USA. Chair of the Board of Governors, Dr Barbara Ambrister and President/CEO Dr Candice Williams, comprised the distinguished delegation representing TCICC. The P3 Higher Education Summit is an annual gathering of influential leaders in the education sector, focusing on advancements in various approaches to procurement, design, financing, and operations and maintenance (O&M) of the college’s infrastructure. This year’s programme delved into innovative ways to apply these insights to campuses and upcoming projects. Dr Ambrister shared her insights on the relevance of the summit, stating, “Participating in the P3 Higher Education Summit has been an enlightening experience. It’s crucial for institutions like ours to stay abreast of the latest trends and practices in higher education, particularly in the areas of procurement and project management. This summit has provided unique ideas and strategies for funding, partnering with public and private investors for short and long-range planning”. Dr Williams emphasised the importance of incorporating new education technologies into P3 projects. She remarked, “The Summit highlighted how we can leverage technology to enrich learning experiences, and how to collaborate on financing capital projects. It’s essential for us to explore these opportunities as we continue to shape the educational landscape at TCICC.” This year’s summit featured discussions on various aspects of higher education, including Financing New Technologies to Enhance Tertiary Education, Asset Monetisation Strategies for Colleges and Universities, A Practical P3 Exploratory Framework and ways to Deliver a Project with the P3 Model, among other areas. The TCICC delegation actively engaged in discussions, bringing back valuable insights that will contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the college’s initiatives. Subsequently, the chair and president will meet with one of the investors in the TCI where ongoing discussions on collaboration will be discussed.

Marvel drops Majors after domestic assault conviction Emmy-nominated actor Jonathan Majors has been dropped by Marvel Studios after he was convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend. On Monday, a jury in New York found that Majors, 34, attacked and harassed British choreographer Grace Jabbari during an argument in March. Following the verdict, a Marvel spokesperson said the studio would no longer work with the actor. Majors could face up to a year in prison when sentenced in February. It marks a stunning downfall for a leading Hollywood actor who had been expected to feature in multiple Marvel films. Majors played villain Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel films. He starred in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania last February and on Disney+ series Loki, now in its second season.
Marvel had already pushed back release dates for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, in which he was due to play the starring role. He was set to perform again as the character in the follow-up film, Avengers: Secret Wars. It is unclear whether Marvel Studios plans to replace him with another actor or write his character out of the films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has already hired the creator of Loki to re-work a draft of the film that had been expected to be called The Kang Dynasty. The new working title for the movie is Avengers 5, sources told the outlet. Magazine Dreams, an upcoming film starring Majors that was being touted as a possible Oscar contender, had its release postponed as well following his arrest.
Jonathan Majors’ films include Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania
The US Army also dropped the Creed III star from a major advertising campaign once the news broke. His former girlfriend, Ms Jabbari, was left with a fractured finger, bruising and a cut behind her ear after the couple fought over a phone in a hire car in New York
City. The incident took place when Ms Jabbari saw a text message from another woman on Majors’ phone, which said: “Wish I was kissing you right now.” In an effort to get his phone back, the film star grabbed his then-girlfriend, twisted her arm
behind her back and hit her in the head, Ms Jabbari testified. He was found guilty of assault by recklessly causing physical injury, as well as harassment. The jury acquitted him on charges of aggravated harassment and assault with intent to cause physical harm, however.

CHRISTMASPages Christmas traditions around the world, from fistfights to KFC In the U.S., holiday season customs can range from the cozy to the confounding, like sharing a kiss under the poisonous and parasitic plant, mistletoe. Around the world, the traditions are as diverse as the countries in which they originated. From flying fists to crispy chicken wings, here's a look at some of the interesting ways in which people celebrate the Christmas season and beyond. A FISTFIGHTING FESTIVAL IN PERU Christmas Day in Santo Tomás, Peru, starts off as families make their way to church. But later that morning, and into the afternoon, is the time for Takanakuy, a series of organised fistfights. Takanakuy means "to strike" in Quechua, an indigenous language spoken in the Andes Mountains region of Peru. The festival is an opportunity for friends, families, neighbours and business partners to settle their differences outside of the courts, which can be difficult to access for Peruvians living in rural Santo Tomás. There are typically at least a couple dozen fights that day. Participants – who usually include men in their 20s and 30s, but also women and teenagers – are not able to fight before Takanakuy. Before the match, they must announce who they are fighting and why, and embrace. Each fight lasts from five to 10 minutes. Opponents cannot hit each other while one person is on the ground, there are no weapons allowed, and a referee will call the fight if it begins leaning too far in one person's favour. Those who are elderly or have disabilities, or otherwise cannot fight, can have someone fight on their behalf. The person who loses must publicly apologise to the town. Both parties must again embrace after the fight. "But the assumption if you agree to fight during Takanakuy is that you announce the umbrage or the offense, and then after the fight, regardless of who wins, you're supposed to hug, make peace in the town square, and you make a promise to the villagers that the dispute is over," said Dr. Raymond March of North Dakota State University. The day is punctuated by a big feast. The very beginning of the festival is hard to trace, March said, but he estimates it dates back to the 1600s when conquistadors began taking over indigenous land
in the Andes mountains to mine for minerals. "You start to have instances where conflicts naturally arise," March said. "And there's not a clear way to resolve that." So in some instances, disputes over land were settled with fistfights. Now, about 8,500 people celebrate Takanakuy, March estimates. It has spread to some nearby cities, but most people come to Santo Tomás to partake. Over the years, there has been resistance toward the event from the Catholic Church and people living in bigger cities, like Cusco. Opponents say Takanakuy is "barbaric ... antiquated, not helpful [and] against Christmas spirit, to say the least," March said. But settling disputes in a courthouse means traveling to Cusco, which can take up to a week and a half, as buses travel to Santo Tomás infrequently. "It is a way to end the dispute so it doesn't go year after year and involve more people and disrupt public life," March said. "So in that instance, it does work. Whereas, in the Peruvian court system, it's not clear that will happen." "They fight, but then they agree that the grievance is over and they're going to make peace after that," he added. "And in that regard, it does have somewhat of a festive flair to it." A JANUARY CHRISTMAS IN ETHIOPIA In Ethiopia, for many, Christmas is celebrated on Jan. 7, in a celebration known as Ganna. It's in January because Ethiopia uses the Julian calendar, while much of the world uses the Gregorian calendar. Ganna is the conclusion of a 45-day fasting period that begins in late November. It is celebrated by most Christians in Ethiopia, but especially by Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Christians, said Amlaku Eshetie, an Amharic language lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley. "Overall, Ganna, or Christmas, is celebrated by all Christians all over Ethiopia, though there could be some minor variations in the intensity and style of celebrations from region to region or tribes to tribes," he said. The fast, in which celebrants refrain from eating meat and dairy, commemorates the Fast of the Prophets, who fasted for 44 days in anticipation for the birth of Jesus Christ. However, the Tewahedo
Church has added an extra day of fasting. On Christmas Eve, people dress in all white and gather for church service, which ends around 3 to 4 am, Eshetie said. People then go home to sleep and break their fast with a light meal. "Next, the actual traditional CONTINUED

celebration will begin," Eshetie said. "Traditionally, holidays in Ethiopia are more social or communal than religious. ... Yet, the social part of the celebration continues for days!" Families and neighbours gather, and sometimes, a bull might be slaughtered and divided among various people or eaten together. Traditional Ethiopian meals, such as Doro Wat, a spicy chicken stew, and Kitfo, finely minced beef seasoned with hot spices and butter, are prepared. The Amharic term for Christmas is Lidet, though Ganna has since become synonymous with the holiday, as it is a game that is believed to have been played by shepherds after hearing Jesus was born. The game is similar to golf and is still played. "To deeply understand the what, how and why of Ganna holiday, it's essential to understand the Ethiopian seasons and weather, the history and practices of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and the cultures of the Ethiopian people in general," Eshetie said. KFC FOR DINNER IN JAPAN Christmas is the busiest time of year for KFC in Japan, as, per tradition, many families get their holiday dinner from the restaurant. The tradition started around 1974, but there are a couple theories within the company about how it began. One is that a store manager dressed up as Santa Claus and delivered chicken to a Japanese school. The kids enjoyed it, so he launched an advertising campaign. Another is that Japanese people began buying KFC during the holidays because turkeys weren't easily available. Though, neither of the theories has been confirmed, KFC Japan said. Merry White, a food anthropologist and professor at Boston University, lived in Japan in the 1960s, when there was no KFC. KFC Japan was founded in 1970, and for many years was seen as more of a date night spot. A recession in Japan made people turn to the restaurant as a way to feed their families, White said. Regardless of how the tradition came to be, each year KFC Japan
runs an advertising campaign from Dec. 23 to Christmas Day. Since 1985, it has sold special "Party Barrels," which contain KFC Original Recipe fried chicken, gratin and cake. Christmas is KFC Japan's busiest time of year. It said it had 2 million customers last year from Dec. 23 to 25. Those few days brought in about 6 billion yen, or $41 million, in 2022. Spiders on Christmas trees in Ukraine In Ukraine, some of those who celebrate Christmas hang pavuki, or "spiders" made from materials such as straw, beads and wire, a tradition rooted in the belief that they will bring prosperity to those who participate. There are quite a few theories on how the custom came to be. Natalie Kononenko, a folklorist at the University of Alberta who does fieldwork in Ukraine, says there are two origin stories. One stems from a folktale about a poor family who could not afford Christmas gifts for their children. The dad brings home a fir tree that spiders have woven webs onto. The family is scared at first, but in the morning, the webs have turned to silver, bringing them good fortune. In the second story, Ukrainians weave wheat straws together "to ensure a good crop of wheat in the following year," Kononenko said. Robert Romanchuk, who teaches Slavic at Florida State University, cited a Ukrainian folk calendar written by Vasyl Tymofiyovych Skurativskyi in 1993 that says straw spiders were first hung on roofbeams in the Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine. Christmas trees are a fairly new tradition in Ukraine, and with time and the immigration of Ukrainians to other parts of the world, people likely began hanging the spiders on trees as well as around the house, Romanchuk said. "This would explain why Ukrainians from Ukraine (including those from IvanoFrankivsk) are mystified and even upset by these displays, but diaspora Ukrainians maintain that they are traditional," Romanchuk said. "In a sense, both are right." While some Ukrainians may still make the spiders by hand, others may choose to buy premade spider and spiderweb ornaments. (NPR.org)
The spider tradition is rooted in the belief that they will bring prosperity to those who participate
In Ethiopia, for many, Christmas is celebrated on January 7

JN.1 Covid variant: WHO charts its rapid global spread A sub-variant of the Omicron mutation of the Covid virus has been classified as a “variant of interest”, by the World Health Organization, because of “its rapidly increasing spread”. JN.1 has been found in many countries around the world, including India, China and the United States. The risk to the public is currently low and current vaccines continue to offer protection, the WHO says. But it warns Covid and other infections could rise this winter. Respiratory viruses such as flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and childhood pneumonia are also on the rise in the northern hemisphere. The virus which causes Covid is constantly changing over time and sometimes this leads to new
variants developing. Omicron has been the globally dominant variant for some time. The WHO says it is continuously monitoring the spread of Omicron sub-variant JN.1 and will issue updates as needed. It is currently tracking a number of Covid variants of interest - but none is thought to be concerning. WINTER SURGE JN.1 is spreading fast in all regions, probably because it has an additional mutation in the spike protein to the BA.2.86 variant from which it descended. “It is anticipated that this variant may cause an increase in Sars-Cov-2 [coronavirus] cases amid a surge of infections of other viral and bacterial infections, especially in countries entering the winter season,” the WHO’s risk
Respiratory viruses such as flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and childhood pneumonia are also on the rise in the northern hemisphere
assessment says. Evidence on how capable JN.1 is of defeating the immunity offered by vaccines is limited, the WHO says. There are no reports of people becoming more ill with this variant than previous ones. But more studies are needed,
the WHO says, as the number of countries reporting data on people admitted to hospital with Covid has dramatically reduced. TO PREVENT INFECTIONS AND SEVERE DISEASE, THE WHO ADVISES: · wear a mask in crowded,
enclosed areas · cover up coughs and sneezes · clean your hands regularly · stay up to date with Covid and flu vaccinations, especially if vulnerable · stay home if ill · get tested if you have symptoms (BBC)
DNA sleuths solve mystery of the 2,000-year old corpse How did a young man born 2,000 years ago near what is now southern Russia, end up in the English countryside? DNA sleuths have retraced his steps while shedding light on a key episode in the history of Roman Britain. Research shows that the skeleton found in Cambridgeshire is of a man from a nomadic group known as Sarmatians. It is the first biological proof that these people came to Britain from the furthest reaches of the Roman empire and that some lived in the countryside. The remains were discovered during excavations to improve the A14 road between Cambridge and Huntingdon. The scientific techniques used will help reveal the usually untold stories of ordinary people behind great historical events. They include reading the genetic code in fossilised bone fragments that are hundreds of thousands of years old, which shows an individual’s ethnic origin. Archaeologists discovered a complete, well-preserved skeleton of a man, they named Offord Cluny 203645 - a combination of the Cambridgeshire village he was found in and his specimen number. He was buried by himself without any personal possessions in a

ditch, so there was little to go on to establish his identity. Dr Marina Silva of the Ancient Genomics Laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute, in London, extracted and decoded Offord’s ancient DNA from a tiny bone taken from his inner ear, which was the best preserved part of the entire skeleton. “This is not like testing the DNA
of someone who is alive,” she explained. “The DNA is very fragmented and damaged. However, we were able to (decode) enough of it. “The first thing we saw was that genetically he was very different to the other Romano-British individuals studied so far.” The latest ancient DNA analysis methods are now able
to flesh out the human stories behind events that, until recently, have been reconstructed only by documents and archaeological evidence. These largely tell the tales of the wealthy and powerful. The latest research is a detective story which uses cutting edge forensic science to unravel the mystery of an ordinary person
- a young man buried in a ditch in Cambridgeshire between 126 and 228 AD, during the Roman occupation of Britain. At first, archaeologists thought Offord to be an unremarkable discovery of a local man. But DNA analysis at Dr Silva’s lab showed that he was from the furthest reaches of the Roman Empire, an area that is currently southern Russia, Armenia, and Ukraine. The analysis showed him to be a Sarmatian, who are Iranianspeaking people, renowned for their horse-riding skills. So how did he end up in a sleepy backwater of the empire so far from home? To find the answers, a team from the archaeology department of Durham University used another exciting analysis technique to examine his fossilised teeth, which have chemical traces of what he ate. Teeth develop over time, so just like tree rings, each layer records a snapshot of the chemicals that surrounded them at that moment in time. The analysis showed that until the age of six he ate millets and sorghum grains, known scientifically as C4 crops, which are plentiful in the region where CONTINUED

Hidden lagoon network found with living fossils Scientists have discovered a previously hidden ecosystem with an expansive system of lagoons in the salt plains of Puna de Atacama, an arid plateau in Argentina — with giant stromatolites that could provide a glimpse into the earliest life on Earth and possibly even on Mars, according to new research. Stromatolites are layered rocks created by the growth of blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, through photosynthesis. The structures are considered to be one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth, according to NASA, representing the earliest fossil evidence for life on our planet from at least 3½ billion years ago. “These are certainly akin to some of the earliest macrofossils on our planet, and in really a rare type of environment on modern Earth,” said Brian Hynek, a professor in the department of geological sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, who helped document the ecosystem. “They are a window into the distant past as to what life might have looked like 3½ billion years ago on our planet.” Ancient giant stromatolites used to be widespread in Earth’s Precambrian era, which encompasses the early time span of around 4.6 billion to 541 million years ago, but now they are sparsely distributed around the world. The most well-developed areas are in the Bahamas and the Shark Bay area in Western Australia, according to the nonprofit conservation organization Bush Heritage Australia. Modern stromatolites are

relatively small, Hynek said, whereas ancient stromatolites used to grow to 20 feet (6 meters) tall and 16 to 22 feet (5 to 7 meters) wide, he said. Beneath the waters of Puna de Atacama’s lagoons, the recently uncovered stromatolites are up to 15 feet (4.5 meters) wide and several feet high, according to a news release from the University of Colorado Boulder. Stromatolites also tend to grow in alkaline conditions, but the Puna de Atacama’s system of lagoons are acidic. The stromatolites found today are almost all carbonate rocks (made of limestone), but these
structures are mostly composed of the minerals gypsum and halite (rock salt), Hynek said. It is unclear why the stromatolites are so large, Hynek said, but he speculated that the inland ecosystem sat undisturbed for a long period of time, which allowed them to grow unimpeded. MORE ON ANCIENT STROMATOLITES Unlike modern stromatolites, ancient stromatolites grew in a period when the atmosphere lacked oxygen. In these conditions, the stromatolites’ microbes used

Sarmatians were known to have lived. But over time, analysis showed a gradual decrease in his consumption of these grains and more wheat, found in western Europe, according to Prof Janet Montgomery. “The (analysis) tells us that he, and not his ancestors, made the journey to Britain. As he grew up, he migrated west, and these plants disappeared from his diet.” Historical records indicate that Offord could have been a cavalry man’s son, or possibly his slave. They show that around the time he lived, a
unit of the Sarmatian cavalry incorporated into the Roman army was posted to Britain. The DNA evidence confirms this picture, according to Dr Alex Smith of MOLA Headland Infrastructure, the company that led the excavation. “This is the first biological evidence,” he told BBC News. “The availability of these DNA and chemical analysis techniques means that we can now ask different questions and look at how societies formed, their make-up and how they evolved in the Roman period. “It suggests that there was much greater movement, not
just in the cities but also the countryside.” Dr Pontus Skoglund, who heads the ancient genomics laboratory at the Crick, told BBC News that the new technology is transforming our understanding of the past. “The main impact of ancient DNA to date has been improving our understanding of the Stone and Bronze Ages, but with better techniques, we are also starting to transform our understanding of the Roman and later periods.” The details have been published in the journal, Current Biology. anoxygenic photosynthesis, which doesn’t require oxygen, to convert light energy into compounds that support living cells. “It is spectacular to find structures that could be biogenic (produced by living organisms) at this unusual altitude,” said Pieter Visscher, a professor of marine sciences at the University of Connecticut who has extensively studied stromatolites, in an email. “A major issue with the discovery, whether biogenic or not, is that these are formed in the presence of oxygen (in the current atmosphere). Until 2.3 billion years ago, there was no oxygen.” While the stromatolites are in an environment containing oxygen, Hynek said he believes the layers farther down in the rock have little to no access to oxygen and are actively formed by microbes using anoxygenic photosynthesis. This would make the structures similar to the ones found on ancient Earth. Hynek spotted the system of lagoons through satellite imagery in April 2022 when he was studying another lagoon in northwestern Argentina that had smaller stromatolites with microbes that use anoxygenic photosynthesis. “We’re not sure if the microbes are actively participating in their growth (in the newly discovered stromatolites). We think they are. But we haven’t done the experiments yet to try to figure that part out,” said Hynek, who documented preliminary observations with microbiologist Maria Farías, cofounder of Punabio SA Environmental Consulting. “There’s a lot of work to be done.
We just discovered them and hardly scratched the surface.” Hynek and Farías were slated to present their findings December 11 at the 2023 meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, according to a news release. POSSIBLE WINDOW INTO ANCIENT MARS If the stromatolites are produced by microbes using anoxygenic photosynthesis, the discovery could provide insight on the possibility of life on ancient Mars, Hynek said. “We’ve identified more than 600 ancient lakes on Mars; there may have even been an ocean. So, it was a lot more Earth-like early on,” he said. Hynek also said the minerals gypsum and halite, found in the stromatolites in Argentina, are also in salt deposits all over Mars. “If Mars ever evolved life through photosynthesis, this is the type of thing we’d be looking for (stromatolites) — and it is the type of thing we’re looking for,” said Hynek, who is also a research associate at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. “If we’re going to find any sort of fossils on Mars, this is our best guess as to what they would be, because these are the oldest ones from the Earth rock record.” Hynek said he hopes to return to the lagoon soon to conduct more research on the stromatolites. “Stromatolites on Mars? A long shot, but who knows. So far, no carbonates at the surface of Mars, but the search continues,” Visscher said, for potential signs of life. (CNN)

Severe childhood obesity has increased in the US: new study A new study revealed that severe childhood obesity rates have risen in the United States — and experts expect to see the upward trend continue. Published in the journal Pediatrics, the study looked at 16.6 million children ages 2 to 4 who were enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Programme for Women, Infants, and Children. This programme “serves to safeguard the health of lowincome pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating including breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals to health care,” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture website.
The children in this test group were weighed and measured. In 2010, research found that 2.1% of kids were considered severely obese. Severe obesity is defined as “sexspecific BMI for age =120% of the 95th percentile on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention growth charts,” according to the authors of the study. In six years, this number dropped from 2.1% to 1.8%, but in 2020, it saw a rise again at 2%. Increases were seen in 20 states across the country, with California having the highest rate at 2.8%. “We were doing well, and now we see this upward trend,” said one of the study’s authors, Heidi Blanck of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), per the Associated Press.
“We are dismayed at seeing these findings.” The exact reason for this increase is unknown by experts. The authors acknowledged the changes to daily routine during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which kids were home for most of the day with many disruptions, like lack of physical activity. “We are thinking it’s going to get worse,” said Deanna Hoelscher, a childhood obesity researcher at the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, per the Associated Press. Childhood obesity can lead to many different health problems down the line. These include but aren’t limited to asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes and risk factors for heart disease,

Scientists have solved the mystery of a strange ‘signal’ from Earth’s core, study reports Scientists in China say they’ve solved a major mystery deep inside the Earth by confirming that the inner core wobbles with a predictable rhythm that repeats every 8.5 years. The research team says that the finding confirms previous measurements made by the team in 2018 and challenges earlier assumptions about the relationship between Earth’s layers and how their movement affects things like our changing day lengths. The study was published in December in Nature Communications. Understanding the solid hunk of iron and nickel, the inner core, floating within a liquidy metal layer, the outer core, is much more difficult than fictional trips to the centre of the Earth have made it seem. A lot of what scientists know about the inner core and its movements has come from waves rippling across the planet, generated by massive earthquakes or nuclear bomb tests. Yet, understanding the inner core and its movements is crucial for unravelling mysteries around Earth’s structure, its magnetic field and earthquakes. In 2018, geophysicist Hao Ding, a co-author of the current study, and colleagues analysed how the motion of the Earth’s poles changes subtly over time. They
A lot of what scientists know about the inner core and its movements has come from waves rippling across the planet
noticed a pattern, or harmonic “signal,” repeating every 8.5 years, which they confirmed in this latest study using measurements of how day length varies over time. That pattern, they report in the new study, is the wobbling of the inner core. Their analysis also led them to conclude that the core must be tilted at around 17 degrees relative to the Earth’s mantle, or crust. This
goes against the current thinking that the tilt is much greater and that the spin of the core matches up with that of the mantle. It also implies that the core isn’t a perfect sphere but rather is egg-shaped and denser in the northwestern portion. “These deviations offer valuable constraints for the 3D density model of the mantle and question assumptions in the liquidity-core
oblate, highlighting potential deviations from a perfectly spherical form calculated using traditional theories,” explained Ding in a press statement. And all this tilt and wobble has a ripple effect. The authors state that the pattern of wobbling of the Earth’s core drives the oddities in the Earth’s overall rotation and day length and may explain other phenomena like the Earth’s
changing magnetic field. “The static tilt may also lead to a certain change in the shape of the liquid core, resulting in a change in the fluid motion and a corresponding change in the geomagnetic field,” said Ding. This latest research isn’t the only way to explain such phenomena however. Other theories say that a geophysical tug of war between the Earth’s magnetic field and the gravitational field of the mantle causes the inner core to spin backwards then forwards roughly every 70 years. Or, it’s because the surface of the core isn’t static and smooth but has changing peaks and valleys. “I’m not sure there are very many things in Earth sciences that are as unresolved as the motion of the inner core,” John Vidale, seismologist at the University of Southern California, who wasn’t involved in the study, said previously. “It’s a long-standing battle to try to figure out exactly what’s happening.” While some uncertainties remain, the current study is a step forward in resolving some of these debates. “We aim to delve deeper into the periodic oscillation and differential rotation of the Earth’s core, seeking clarity on these conceptual theories that are different and may be difficult to coexist,” said Ding. European Court upholds EU inclusion of billionaire Abramovich on sanctions list Russian billionaire and former owner of Premier League football club Chelsea Roman Abramovich has lost a legal challenge to overturn his inclusion on the European Union’s sanctions list following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In its ruling the General Court of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) dismissed the action brought by Abramovich “thereby upholding the restrictive measures taken against him.” In May 2022, Abramovich brought a case against the EU seeking to annul his inclusion on the sanctions list, CJEU documents said. Abramovich claimed there was “manifest error” in the European Union’s assessment and the decision to include him on the list is an “infringement of fundamental rights” and “unjustified interference” of his fundamental rights enshrined in EU law. In Wednesday’s ruling, the CJEU explained that in light of Abramovich’s role as the major shareholder of Russian steel and mining giant Evaraz, the EU “did not in fact err in its assessment by deciding to include then maintain Mr Abramovich’s name,” on the sanctions list. The Russian and mining sector “provides a substantial source of revenue to the Russian Government,” the CJEU detailed. The Luxembourg-based court concluded that Abramovich’s

inclusion on the sanctions list did “not constitute an unjustified and disproportionate infringement of his fundamental rights.” ‘LONG AND CLOSE TIES TO VLADIMIR PUTIN’ Abramovich had also sought compensation of €1 million ($1.1 million) to be paid into a charitable foundation for damages to his reputation. On Wednesday, the CJEU said Abramovich had failed to demonstrate that his inclusion on the sanctions list was unlawful, and “his claim for compensation is also dismissed.”
CNN has reached out to Abramovich for comment. Abramovich was placed on the EU’s sanction list along with Russian officials, including the country’s president Vladimir Putin, prominent business leaders and oligarchs in March 2022 shortly after the conflict began. The European Union said Abramovich “has long and close ties to Vladimir Putin,” and “has had privileged access to the president, and has maintained very good relations with him.” A connection, the EU said, allowed the tycoon “to maintain his considerable wealth.”
“He has therefore been benefitting from Russian decision-makers responsible for the annexation of Crimea or the destabilisation of Ukraine,” the EU claimed. The EU also alleged that as “one of the leading Russian businesspersons,” Abramovich provided “a substantial source of revenue to the Government of the Russian Federation.” To date, the European says almost 1,800 individuals and entities have been placed on the EU’s sanctions list and are subject to travel restrictions and asset freezes.
‘ALL VICTIMS OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE’ In March 2022, Abramovich announced that he was selling Chelsea and he had “instructed my team to set up a charitable foundation where all net proceeds from the sale will be donated,” adding that “the foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.” Last May, in a deal worth $5 billion, Chelsea was sold to an ownership group led by Todd Boehly, of which $3.08 billion would be donated to Abramovich’s charitable cause. Last week the UK’s Europe Minister Leo Docherty told a parliamentary committee hearing “the proceeds from the sale are frozen in a UK bank account,” and that the government was “now going through a process of independent experts establishing a foundation to manage the money.” “The key difference between the Government and those who have been involved” in establishing the foundation, “is whether the funds get used inside Ukraine or for Ukrainians outside of Ukraine,” Docherty told the hearing. Docherty added that the UK government wants “to have this money deployed as quickly as possible to the benefit of Ukrainians inside Ukraine.” Abramovich also appears on the UK’s sanctions list. (BBC)
Nottingham Forest: Espirito Santo replaces Cooper as manager Nottingham Forest have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo on a twoand-a-half-year contract to replace Steve Cooper. Cooper was sacked on Tuesday after two years, with Forest having lost five of their past six league games and sitting 17th in the table. Former Wolves and Tottenham manager Nuno was sacked by Saudi Pro-League club Al-Ittihad in November. The 49-year-old’s first match in charge will be Saturday’s home Premier League game against Bournemouth.
Nuno spent four years at Wolves, guiding the club to promotion from the Championship in his first season before consecutive seventhplaced finishes in the Premier League, while they also reached the Europa League quarter-finals. The former goalkeeper left Molineux in the summer of 2021 to join Spurs, but was sacked after less than four months in charge after a run of five defeats in seven games. He joined Al-Ittihad in July 2022 and led the Jeddah-based side to the Saudi title last season, but

WI v England: Salt’s century sets up visitors’ record T20 total to level series Phil Salt’s second successive century helped England hit their highest T20 international total in a chaotic 75-run win over West Indies to level the series. Salt’s astonishing 119 - the highest score by an England men’s batter in the format - came from just 57 balls and included 10 sixes as the tourists finished with 267-3. Captain Jos Buttler smashed 55 from 29 balls and Liam Livingstone added an unbeaten 54 from 21 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. West Indies kept up with the imposing run-rate during their entertaining chasing effort, but regular wickets cost them, the hosts falling to 192 all out. The hosts amassed 87 from the first six overs, but England held their nerve and fought back to break every dangerous partnership, with each bowler taking at least one wicket. All-rounder Andre Russell gave the hosts late hope with a dynamic 24-ball half-century before he was the last batter to be dismissed in the 16th over by Reece Topley, who claimed 3-37. England have come from 2-0 down to level the series at 2-2, with the decider taking place at the same venue on Thursday. SALT LEADS ENGLAND’S BATTING CARNAGE On the same day Salt went unsold in the mini-auction for next year’s Indian Premier League, he subjected West Indies’ weary bowlers to another brutal onslaught. A depleted bowling line-up, with attack leader Alzarri Joseph resting for the final two matches of the series, had no answers to the opener’s power as he launched anything full down the ground, was quick to pull short balls and scored freely against spin and pace on a flat pitch. Salt added 117 in just 9.5 overs with Buttler, bettering the 115 they hit together in Saturday’s third T20 for the fifth highest opening stand for England’s men in this format. Buttler’s 26-ball half-century went somewhat under the radar
compared Salt’s brilliance but a second straight fifty for the captain provides England with a welcome boost after his disappointing World Cup showing. Salt was not fazed when Buttler picked out long-on, putting on stands of 56 from 23 balls with Will Jacks and 73 from just 29 deliveries with Livingstone. This batting performance, alongside their successful chase of 223 in the third T20, was so dominant that England’s recent white-ball woes seem scarcely believable, with the confidence of Salt and Buttler oozing into each new batter who was able to strike with conviction from their first ball. West Indies’ bowlers, who lacked the consistency and pace of Joseph, were guilty of bowling
Dani Alves: Trial set for February 2024 for ex-Brazil and Barcelona defender Former Brazil and Barcelona defender Dani Alves’ trial in Spain for alleged sexual assault has been set for 5-7 February 2024. Alves, 40, has been in prison without bail since he was arrested in January over an allegation he assaulted a woman in a Barcelona nightclub last year. He said he had consensual sex with his accuser after initially denying any sexual encounter with her. A Spanish prosecutor is seeking a prison term of nine years for Alves. The prosecutor has also asked for him to receive a restraining
order following the jail term and for him to pay damages worth 150,000 euros (£130,000) to the woman. A court in the Barcelona area formally indicted Alves in August and later decided there was enough evidence to send him to trial. Alves, capped 126 times for Brazil, played for his country at the Qatar World Cup in 2022. He had his contract with Mexican club UNAM terminated after his arrest. In Spain, a claim of rape is investigated under the general accusation of sexual assault and convictions can lead to prison sentences of between four and 15 years. (BBC)
Dani Alves played in the team that won six league titles and three Champions Leagues during his time at Barcelona
too straight, with T20 debutant Matthew Forde conceding 54 from three wicketless overs. Spinner Akeal Hosein’s 1-36 was a rare bright spark, as he and Kyle Mayers - who strangely only bowled one over - were the only two to concede fewer than 10 runs per over. West Indies’ chase promised to be almost as eventful as England’s from the moment opener Brandon King slashed the first ball of the innings to short third off Moeen Ali. Chasing such a big total gave their powerful line-up plenty of freedom but while each cameo was entertaining, especially Nicholas Pooran’s 39 and Sherfane Rutherford’s 36, both off 15 balls, they were unable to keep the momentum going in the same ruthless manner of Salt. Russell struck five enormous sixes in his trademark style but coming in at 106-5 required a feat beyond even his abilities. England were disciplined, with Buttler leading from mid-off as Salt instead kept wicket, and did not panic when the boundaries were flying, with Sam Curran taking 2-25 and teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed claiming two in two balls, despite also conceding 42 from three overs. With the series decider taking place at the same ground, few would bet against another highscoring thriller, with England having a chance to avenge the 2-1 ODI series defeat earlier this month. (BBC)

Jon Rahm to LIV Golf: Shane Lowry ‘not surprised by anything’ after Spaniard’s move Shane Lowry has said he is “not surprised by anything that happens at the minute” as he discussed Ryder Cup team-mate Jon Rahm’s decision to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf. World number three Rahm joined the Saudi-funded tour earlier this month. Before Rahm’s move, the Masters champion and Ireland’s Lowry helped Europe regain the Ryder Cup in Rome. Lowry said: “It had been rumoured for a while so there’s no smoke without fire, is there? “We weren’t too surprised in the end, but I’m not surprised by anything that happens at the minute.” Spain’s Rahm had previously ruled out joining LIV after the PGA Tour’s rival circuit launched in 2022. The 29-year-old will reportedly earn upwards of £450m ($570m) as part of his deal, but while the two-time major winner’s departure represents a significant blow for the PGA Tour, Lowry remains hopeful the fractured landscape in men’s professional golf will soon
be a thing of the past. In June, the PGA and DP World Tours announced they had a ‘framework agreement’ to merge with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has pledged $2bn (£1.6bn) of support to LIV. However, the agreement has a deadline of 31 December to be ratified, with the American government examining the PGA Tour’s plans to take massive investment from Saudi Arabia. “’Hopeful’ is the word I’d use,” said 2019 Open champion Lowry when asked about what the future of the men’s game looks like. “I mean, I’m not involved in anything. I just try to worry about my own thing and get on with my own game. “But I’d be very hopeful that at some stage in the near future we will be back playing the same tournaments together and I think that’s what the world of golf needs.” ‘If we need Rahm to retain Ryder Cup, we probably should have him’ Following Rahm’s move, world
Lowry and Rahm helped Europe regain the Ryder Cup with a thrilling win over the United States in Rome in October
number two Rory McIlroy - a staunch critic of LIV - reversed his stance on golfers from the fledgling circuit playing in the Ryder Cup by calling on the Europe-based DP World Tour to rewrite the eligibility rules. McIlroy had previously said LIV players should not represent Europe in the biennial match against the United States, which will next be held at Bethpage Black in New York in 2025. “I don’t know what should happen or what could happen,” Lowry said. “The one thing I do know is that I want to be on a winning Ryder Cup team in Bethpage and if we do need Jon Rahm to do that, we probably should have him, but who knows what’s going to happen, who knows what the DP World Tour
will do.” While helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup is one of Lowry’s main goals for 2025, the 36-year-old is gearing up for a big 2024 in which he will aim to add to his major tally and win a medal for Ireland at the Olympic Games in Paris. Having captured the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush in 2019, Lowry says he has attempted to peak for the Masters in April over the past couple of years. He intends to tailor his schedule in a similar fashion in 2024 as he bids to become the first Irishman to win at Augusta. “That would be nice if we could get a green jacket back home in Ireland,” said Lowry, speaking at the launch of the 2024 Irish Open, which will take place at Royal County Down in September. “That would be very, very
special. It’s a bucket list thing and something you want to achieve as a professional golfer.” Lowry, whose last individual win came at the BMW PGA Championship in September 2022, added: “I feel like I’m very motivated going forward. I’ve got a lot to achieve still and hopefully have a few more good years left in me. “The second week in April is first and foremost. It’s at the front of all of our minds. My goal is to build towards that. I’ve tried to get myself peaking for then and I feel like I’ve done a good job with that, playing some of my best golf at the Masters over the last couple of years. “That’s my plan. I don’t know if it’ll work but we’ll give it a go and see what happens.” (BBC)
IPL auction: Starc becomes most expensive player at Indian Premier League Australia bowler Mitchell Starc became the most expensive signing in Indian Premier League history when he was bought for 24.75 crore Indian rupees (£2.3m) by Kolkata Knight Riders. The bid for Starc broke the record set earlier in Tuesday’s auction when Pat Cummins was sold for 20.5 cr (£1.9m). That fee beat the 18.15 cr (£1.85m) paid for England’s Sam Curran in 2022. Elsewhere, England bowler Chris Woakes was sold to Punjab Kings and team-mate Harry Brook went to Delhi Capitals. Woakes cost 4.2 cr (£400,000) and Brook 4 cr (£380,000) - a drop from the £1.35m fee paid for him last year. After retiring from international cricket last month, all-rounder David Willey was picked up by Lucknow Super Giants for 2 cr (£189,000). England quick Gus Atkinson was signed by Kolkata for 1 cr (£94,000) while Royal Challengers

Bangalore signed Surrey and England bowler Tom Curran for 1.5 cr (£142,000) and Rajasthan Royals moved for Somerset wicketkeeper-batter Tom KohlerCadmore for 40 lakh (£38,000). Opener Phil Salt and leg-spinner Adil Rashid were among a host of other English players to go unsold, alongside Australia pair Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood. Moeen Ali (Chennai Super Kings), Jos Buttler (Rajasthan
Royals), Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone (all Punjab Kings), Jason Roy (Kolkata Knight Riders), Will Jacks, Reece Topley (both Royal Challengers Bangalore), Mark Wood (Lucknow Super Giants) were the England players already retained by their franchises. WORLD CUP STARS EARN BIG SUMS The third biggest purchase was
New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell, who was signed for 14 cr (£1.3m) by Chennai Super Kings. The fees paid by franchises are the amount paid to each player to play for them in the tournament. CSK also picked up Mitchell’s Black Caps team-mate Rachin Ravindra for 1.8 cr (£170,000) after his breakout performance at the 50over World Cup this autumn. Australia’s title win in India was expected to put their players in demand and there were gasps in the room when the bidding for captain and bowler Cummins, 30, went over 20 cr for the first time in an IPL auction as Sunrisers Hyderabad won a bidding war with RCB. Starc, 33, has not played in the T20 competition for eight years but was signed after intense bidding, which started between Mumbai Indians and Delhi before being taken on by Gujarat Titans and KKR. Sunrisers also picked up Australia batter Travis Head, player of the match in the World
Cup final win over India, for 6.8 cr (£645,000). Left-armer Spencer Johnson, who was not part of Australia’s squad and only made his Big Bash and international debuts this year, was bought for 10 cr (£944,000) by Gujarat Titans. RCB spent 11.50 cr (£1.1m) on West Indies quick Alzarri Joseph and his team-mate, all-rounder Rovman Powell, was bought for 7.40 cr (£702,000) by Rajasthan. Mumbai signed South Africa bowler Gerald Coetzee and Sri Lanka left-armer Dilshan Madushanka for 5 cr (£473,000) and 4.6 cr (£435,000) respectively. Punjab signed India pace bowler Harshal Patel for 11.75 cr (£1.1m) and paid 8 cr (£756,00) for South Africa batter Rilee Rossouw. Twenty-year-old Sameer Rizvi and 19-year-old Kumar Kushagra were two young, uncapped Indians to pick up large sums with Rizvi signed by CSK for 8.4 cr (£793,000) and Kushagra 7.2 cr (£680,000) by Delhi. RICHMOND HILL AND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL WIN RUGBY TOURNAMENT Richmond Hill Prep and the International School of the TCI won the annual Inter-Primary Tag Rugby Tournament which was recently played at the Meridian Field in Grace Bay. According to information from the Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Football Union (TCIRFU), the tournament culminated rugby activities for 2023. Two Saturdays from now, youth rugby will recommence, while in late February next year, the TCIRFU will look to host a high school tournament. Eight schools participated in the primary school event earlier this month, with a keen battle in the U9 division. However, International School, which finished with four wins from four games, emerged victorious. According to the official results, Provo Primary finished just behind in the U9 division. Precious Treasures U9 won the Fair Play award. In the U12, Richmond Hill Prep
defeated Provo Primary in the final, but the latter won the Fair Play award. Provo Primary threw a lot of big passes to create space but the Richmond Hill Prep defence had them covered. On attack, Jamari Heath of Richmond Hill Prep scored twice in the left corner after running the ball from the middle of the field. Jace Mullings scored the other try for a final score of 3-0. The other schools that competed included Thelma Lightbourne Primary, Enid Capron Primary, Precious Treasures, Shining Stars Prep and British West Indies Collegiate (in the U12 category only). The tournament was sponsored by Graceway Supermarkets, The Agency, TCI Waste and GraceBay Paints and Supplies. The volunteers and referees, including Aiden Doherty, Stanley Haven and Coach Andrew among others played a pivotal role, while the Sports Commission also lent support.
This is the last edition of the year. Our next edition will be on January 6, 2024. Provo Primary finished second in the U9 division
