IGA Supermarkets tell customers to brace for higher food prices
The cost of some food items in supermarkets will increase by as much as 11 per cent in the coming weeks, placing an even heavier financial burden on consumers who are struggling to make ends meet.
Graceway IGA, the largest supermarket chain in the TCI has warned shoppers to brace themselves for increases in food prices triggered by global events.
Communications Manager, Latoya Walkin in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 23, explained that grocery stores around the world are experiencing significant price increases due to global events that include the war in Ukraine, crop-killing droughts and diseases such as the avian flu.
She said: “The ongoing RussiaUkraine conflict continues to affect supply, production, and manufacturing costs worldwide, causing inflation and a significant increase in prices.
“The price of food is expected to increase by up to 11 per cent, with the cost of beef, poultry, milk, eggs, and fruit driving the surge.”
She stressed that prices could
shoot even higher with droughts affecting crops halting shipments needed for both food and crop production.
“You’ve probably noticed price rises on Eggs as the Avian Influenza (H5N1, bird flu) outbreak has significantly reduced the supply of eggs, driving up costs across the board. Most of the eggs sold in US stores are produced domestically.
“The Avian Flu Pandemic began approximately six months ago and has reduced the capacity of the egglaying business by about 10 per cent and the price in Turkey also rose by 20 per cent,” she added.
She further pointed out that the increases in Romaine lettuce are attributed to supply and demand, changes in growing areas, drought, and a plant virus that ravaged a California growing region in recent months.
The price of the popular lettuce has increased some 61 per cent in the last 12 months.
That is the steepest climb in cost for any food product being tracked by the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Walkin stressed that while the cost of inflation is beyond the supermarkets’ control, every effort is being made to help ease the burden on shoppers.
“Graceway shares your concerns about higher food costs and the
challenges you are facing.
“We remain committed to keeping you informed about these global trends.
“While maintaining the quality and freshness of our food, Graceway Supermarkets is making
every effort to purchase from various suppliers.
“We have also launched Everyday Low Prices on over 150 breadbasket items that matter most to you, our valuable customers”, she added.
Deadline looms for stimulus cheques
– Applicants urged to submit outstanding documents
The window for persons to receive the Government’s one-time $1000 stimulus payment is closing quickly.
The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is nearing the conclusion of the processing of approvals under the Citizen Inflation Adjustment Stimulus and as such qualified applicants who have not received the payment are being urged to submit all remaining required documents no later than 3 December 2022, a statement from the Office of the Premier said on Thursday (December 1).
“Once applications are processed, a single payment will be made by the Government Treasury on Grand Turk (and distributed to sub-treasuries on other islands) directly to the applicant via cheque.
“Applicants will be required to present photo identification showing either Turks & Caicos Islands status or BOTC status.”
Cheques will be valid for six months post the printed date. Lost cheques or stale-dated cheques will not be reissued.
Questions concerning this application process may be
directed to the Turks & Caicos Islands Government via email: tciassistance@gov.tc.
The Citizens Inflation Adjustment Stimulus programme was rolled out as part of the government’s efforts to cushion the impact of inflation triggered by the Russia/Ukraine war.
The ongoing war has disrupted supply chains and economic challenges have created an unstable global economy which have caused excessive spikes in the prices of fuel and food across the world.

Public Appeal
Policy to strip status of serious offenders being drafted – Premier
Premier Hon Washington Misick said his Government is “fully onboard” with revoking the legal status of people who commit serious offenses including murder in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
In fact, Misick the Leader of the Progressive National Party (PNP) Government said a policy to strip serious offenders of their legal status in the territory is currently being drafted.
His remarks came in response to a recommendation made by a resident of Cheshire Hall & Richmond Hill, Electoral District (ED 7) during a town hall meeting, held in Providenciales last week.
As a grisly, unprecedented crime wave gripped the territory in recent weeks, residents have not only called on the government to ramp up crime-fighting measures but also to revisit the status laws and rescind them when necessary.
Speaking at the meeting held at the Gustavus Lightbourne Sports Complex in Providenciales, a resident who raised the matter during the public forum said: “We need to implement deprivation of citizenship that is conducive to the public good, for those who pose a threat to the TCI, commit heinous crimes or cause harm to society.
She said: “Revoking someone's
TCI status, or their TCI national status card obtained through a grant and not by a descendant or heritage should be used against the most dangerous people in our society, who we give status to such as murderers, repeat sexual
predators, and those involved in serious organised and gang violence needs to be removed from our society.
“Take away their British passports, take away their TCI status and the status of those
persons who got their status because of the offender to stop aiding and abetting.
The resident suggested that legal citizens who are bent on terrorising residents and disrupting the peace and tranquillity in the Turks and
Caicos Islands should be removed from society and sent back to their birth countries.
She continued: “They wouldn't have any immigration status here, remove them from the TCI and send them to the country of origin, if they are overseas do not allow them to re-enter the Turks and Caicos period, one strike on your status here, it should be revoked.”
In response to the recommendation, Premier Misick said: “Yes, we are fully on board with that…and all of those measures are being looked into as we speak.”
However, he explained that it might not be an easy feat for the government to rescind British Overseas Territory Citizenship.
“Those persons who already have BOTC citizenship there’s a limit to what we can do because British Overseas Territory Citizenship is given by the UK.
“As to whether there’s a way of still removing those people who are British Overseas Territories Citizens from the territory, we have to get legal advice on how that is done. If one has a status in TCI and is not a BOTC citizen then that is a different matter and all of those measures are being looked into”, he added.
As residents in the TCI continue to feel the stings from high inflation, the Government has renewed a suspension on import duties for basket items to help ease the burden.
This comes on the heels of a recent announcement by Graceway IGA, the territory's main supermarket chain, warning residents of up to an 11 per cent increase in food prices in their stores throughout the islands.
Fuelled by global demands, stemming from the recovery of the Covid-19 pandemic and boosted by the war in Ukraine, food commodity prices have been at or near record-high levels for months around the world.
In an effort to ease the pressures of high grocery bills for households across the TCI,
the Government has extended the waiver on import duties for another four months.
This was confirmed by Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, Investment & Trade, Hon Erwin Jay Saunders.
Saunders told the Weekly News on Thursday, December 1, that the exemption will take effect from December 1 and will run until March 31, 2023.
The list of goods includes: rice, flour, grits, bread spaghetti/ instant, noodles, macaroni & cheese dinner, cornflakes - cereals, chicken, canned sausages, fresh and canned meats, cheese, evaporated milk, eggs, and cooking oil.
Duties will also be suspended on fruits, sugar, instant baby food/ juices, water, and cleaning supplies such as (gloves, bleach, alcohol,
CRIME AND TINTED WINDOWS
An aggressive crackdown on tinted windows and irregular number plates on vehicles in the TCI is now underway. This comes as the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force ramp up road operations to push back against a surge of crime in the TCI. Extremely dark-tinted windows were recently pinpointed as a medium for criminals to carry out illegal activities which allow them to evade detection by law enforcement. To this end, the Department of Motor Vehicles recently advised the general public that strict enforcement measures on vehicles with heavily tinted windows and those without license registration plates will soon take effect. As part of the changes to be effected, window tint on Motor vehicles' front windscreen and driver and front passenger windows shall not be lower than 50 per cent. While window tint on the rear windscreen and rear passenger windows shall not be lower than 30 per cent. What are your thoughts?
One of many infractions
Tints are one thing, what about noisy vehicles playing loud music or vehicles that pollute the atmosphere?
Licensing and inspection of private vehicles should be done every two years. With commercial, business, and public vehicles done annually.
Driver's license should be renewed every 10 years like most of the EU and the UK. The fee for the 10-year Driver's license could be $150.
Work permit holders, PRC, and BOTC licenses could be renewable every five years at $300.
Being a TC Islander should have some more privileges than persons here on other statuses.
Crackdown at the government level needed
How about an aggressive crackdown on the government repairing the roads and town planning?
How about TCIG becoming more efficient?
How about instituting two vehicles per household?
How about term limitations on the Office of the Premier, the Deputy Governor, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Attorney General to five years?
Do what’s necessary
I do believe it is a step in the right direction. While we like privacy, we must not allow it to become a means for persons to use in criminal affairs. Also, the Department of Traffic and Road Safety has to ensure that there are sufficient plates on hand for the high demand.
Should be done on all vehicles
Now we will be able to see which minister is in the luxury car. They won't enforce it against expensive cars driven by those rich folks like drug dealers.
Necessary enforcement
Let’s be real, some amount of tinting on windows is definitely necessary to dim some of the harsh sunlight while driving, but there’s no need for drivers to have a total blackout car, some of the tints on these streets are so black it’s scary to think who might be lurking behind those driver seats. We need these laws to be enforced sooner rather than later, people are literally getting away with murder.
Playing catch up
This is nothing new, all over the world law enforcement is cracking down on heavily tinted vehicles, seems like the TCI is now playing catch up. I guess they didn’t need to strictly enforce it because crime was not as rampant as it is now, those days are gone. Get with the times.
Weakness in law enforcement
It is clear that the government held powers long before the crime wave, to crack down on tinted windows and irregular license plates. In the case of the license plates, this is clearly a breach of the law but there is a deliberate refusal, until innocent lives were lost, to enforce this part of the law.
Those “strict enforcement measures” should have been implemented a long time ago. This is a massive admission of defeat and incompetence on the part of the “powers that be” and the government of the day is letting them “off the hook” too easily. There is a clear weakness in law enforcement in the TCI. The security oversight, administration and policy, if any, must be overhauled and removed.
Right to privacy at stake
a little of their security and privacy to serve the “greater good”. This however may be asking too much of the lawabiding citizens who prefer their cars and SUVs to be tinted. Some have medical conditions, and eyesight issues and there is an absolute need for them to have tinted windows and windshields. This last-minute decision would not take account of that. It is usual when you have a “leaderless police force” with a weak “high command”, devoid of strategy and policy, that this kind of decision-making would emerge. These measures will not reduce crimes and will perhaps only add to the spate of crimes and murders taking place in the TCI.
Needed, but can become burdensome on citizens
Let’s face facts, criminals don’t play by our rules. They always find ways and means to navigate around the law. Although the initiative is a good one, the criminals will improvise.
TCI is not a big place and if we have learned one thing over the last few months, it is that there are a lot of informants. Some could simply be lookouts to inspect who is on the road at any given time before the real criminals, armed to commit their crimes, get into action.
So don’t expect the criminals to be that stupid to get caught. Yes, one or two might be netted, but they will evolve and find other ways around the system.
National ID cards to be rolled out in 2025
A National Identification Card which will replace NIB, NHIP, and Status Cards will be rolled out in the Turks and Caicos Islands by 2025.
The National ID card project when brought to fruition will be the linchpin of the Government’s E-Government programme designed to make doing business in the TCI easier and further propel the territory into the digital age.
Speaking at a town hall meeting recently, Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Investment and Trade, Hon Erwin Jay Saunders said a team from the United Kingdom is currently in the territory garnering information to take the project forward.
He said: “The projects that underpin digital government and E-government are two main projects, one of them being the national ID, which we are moving forward with.
“The UK Consulting team is on the island right now and they are starting to gather the information on preparing the strategic plan.
“That strategic plan will include all of the systems that the departments will need… that process is being managed by the Office of the Premier.”
The Deputy Premier informed that the National ID card project has already gone out to tender for the design.
“That project has gone out to tender already for the design of the
national ID so we will be rolling out an ID during this term to replace a number of the ones that you have in your wallet already.”
The tender process will close on January 11, after which a consultant will be hired to start designing the cards.
Saunders stressed that having online databases and connectivity among departments will help to streamline operations and boost efficiency.
“As we know, those cards are recognised internationally and they’re easy to be forged, we’re gonna be rolling out a national ID
that will exist in a physical and digital form.”
He underscored that it will also optimise the economy, by improving Government services to residents.
“That national ID will be with everyone who is allowed to be a resident in the Turks and Caicos.
“If you were born in the Turks and Caicos you will get one— if you come here on a work permit you’ll get one so everyone who’s allowed to be in the Turks and Caicos will get one.”
The installation of fibre optic cables on other islands is also a major project on the cards to be rolled out as part of the territory’s transition to E-Government.
Saunders said this project is expected to start in January.
data from that is sent to the family islands wirelessly.
“So if you're in one of the family islands, you'll find that the service isn't as reliable as it is in Providenciales and so the government is going to be expanding that fibre optic cable from Provo through the family islands, so connecting North Caicos, Middle and South Caicos, and all the way to Grand Turk.
“That project budget has already been approved for the consultation of that project, so that project is now starting to get moving and a consultant will come down to design the business case.
DIGITISATION PROJECTS
implement over 30 major Information Technology (IT) projects that will make doing business in the TCI easier and further propel the territory into the digital age.
The projects which will digitise all Government systems including statutory bodies is being spearheaded by an IT Steering Committee which was approved in August last year.
One of the projects will streamline and speed up the leasing of Crown land, thrusting the territory’s judicial system into the digital age by supporting the electronic filing and tracking of cases.
Other projects will track and capture the workforce demographics, which will allow the government to ensure that TC Islanders are given first preference in the job market.
Other digitisation projects will allow for the electronic filing and tracking of scholarship applications, and allow the electronic filing of vehicle registrations and licenses, and driver’s license applications.
The upgrades to the antiquated systems which are often bemoaned by residents who would often have to wait in long queues to access a range of Government services will also make it easier and more convenient for them to remit fees and taxes.
The online databases and connectivity among departments will further modernise procurement and contract management systems and integrate the social security network, and revenue authority.
He said: “The other project is the fiber optic cable, as we know there's one fibre optic cable coming into Providenciales and then the
Back in May, the Government allocated $2.3m in the 2022-2023 budget to advance digitisation and E-Governance in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The technological upgrades will also facilitate an interoperable platform for policing border control, and other enforcement functions such as road traffic.
The public is being advised to notify the closest police station or to contact Crime Stoppers and give any information regarding this incident or any illegal activity anonymously.
Residents should also note that Crime Stoppers calls are answered in Miami and in Houston by Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers which is a nonprofit and not a police agency.
All calls are anonymous and cannot be traced in the United States or the TCI.

Hadassa Smith is 100 not out
– King Charles sends his first Telegram to celebrate the occasion
One hundred years ago Mrs Hadassa Smith was born in Bottle Creek, North Caicos and on November 23, 2022, she reached a milestone many aspire to. She is now 100 years old, a centenarian.
To celebrate her birthday, Mrs Smith, who is described as – ‘one of the most humble, kind and loving soul you would ever want to meet,” by her great niece Magnolia Smith – met with the Governor and members of the Royal TCI Police Force last week.
His Excellency Governor Nigel Dakin visited Mrs Smith at her home in Kew Town to deliver flowers and a telegram from the King.
Commenting on his visit, Dakin said: “I delivered the first ‘Telegram’ we have received in TCI, from the King, passing on his and the Queen Consort’s warmest congratulations and heartfelt wishes.”
The card was signed by both the King and Queen.
Two of Mrs Smith’s daughters and granddaughters were present, and it was more than enjoyable to meet them, the Governor noted.
“Sometimes you have to ask the right question to get treated to something special, and… it was as the conversation turned, I found myself in the presence of a really talented poet - one of her daughters - at an unexpected recital in a family front room.
“And it was very clear there was an awful lot of love, admiration
and respect for their mother and grandmother in that room.
“Mrs Smith had the ability to still make them laugh and when she spoke it was a voice of clear yet gentle calmness,” Governor Dakin observed.
He mused: “I’m uncertain what the family trick is with regard to longevity (and Mrs Smith wasn’t giving away her secret) but I’m told by her daughters that her siblings also lived to a grand old age - one reaching 103.”
Adding his own congratulations to the King’s, the Governor said he was privileged to share the moment with the Smith family.
Later the same day, Mrs Smith was visited by the acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Willet Harvey, ASP Randy Ellis and Sergeant Damien Mitchell, all of whom wished the birthday lady all the best.
She was also presented with a customised birthday card signed by officers and a fruit basket.
Provo Airport redevelopment moving steadily ahead – Minister Musgrove
The legal framework for the redevelopment of the Providenciales International Airport is currently being drafted and bidding on the multi-million dollar project is expected to begin in 2023.
This is according to the Minister of Immigration and Border Services Hon Arlington Musgrove who recently disclosed that legal preparatory work is being carried out in order to get the project off the ground.
“The Project Steering Committee, representing all stakeholders, meets on a bi-weekly basis and as moving forward with the administrative needs of the project”, he said in response to questions from a resident during a town hall meeting in Providenciales on Monday, November 21.
The Providenciales International Airport redevelopment project has been touted as one of the largest and most important projects to be undertaken in the territory.
Musgrove underscored that a project of this magnitude requires an intensive and lengthy consultative and planning process, which is currently underway.
He said: “We have hired some legal consultants from ALG and legal consultants for the Attorney General Chambers.
“The Attorney General Chambers is now vetting the draft regulations that would provide the legal framework needed to undertake a
large project of the size.”
He further explained that the Turks and Caicos Islands Airport Authority (TCIAA) which will be spearheading the redevelopment of the airport has also engaged local legal counsels to specifically, look over interests.
“TCIAA financial advisor is in direct communication with the consultant ALG, the business case has been repurposed for resubmission to the UK Foreign Commonwealth Office.
“ And as anticipated, with the support of the Attorney General
Chambers and the good work of the steering committee, the consultant and the project should be able to pre-qualified bidders by the end of the fiscal year, that is before April 2023”, he added.
The current terminal building at the Providenciales International Airport, the territory’s main gateway, has been deemed woefully inadequate as the tourism sector continues to grow exponentially.
As such, the redevelopment project has been highlighted as a critical infrastructural need for the nation’s growth and development.
As part of the work to be undertaken, the construction of a new world-class terminal is set to get underway in February 2023.
ALG, a leading global consultancy focused on transportation, infrastructure, and logistics, is working on the project, with a team based in Madrid leading the consultation.
The consultancy exercise began in February this year and is expected to be completed within nine months.
The first phase of the undertaking was an evaluation of the kind
of redevelopment that needs to take place, which could mean works to the current facility or the construction of a new facility.
The consultancy also provided a full suite of options to the Turks and Caicos Islands government and the Airports Authority on moving forward with the location of the new airport, the development of the present facility, as well as options for financing.
It also explored ownership of the airport, whether it will be fully owned by the government or a public-private partnership.
Round One of TCREA Real Estate
Mentorship Programme ends
Round one of the Turks and Caicos Real Estate Association’s Mentorship Programme ended last weekend with an afternoon of powerful presentations and a fitting celebration.
On Saturday, November 26, the inaugural class returned to where it all began – the TCREA head office – this time flanked by family, faculty, and media. Smartly dressed as junior realtors, the mentees delivered final presentations to the programme’s mentors and guests.
Showing a perfect range of variety, the teens displayed their mock realtor biographies and a sales pitch on a pre-selected real estate listing. There was a show of
presentations on vacant land, single homes, and condos, all placed on the big screen for viewing while the teens made use of their newly adopted real estate jargon and shared their listings’ best attributes with the room.
“Watching these bright minds deliver their presentations was a proud moment,” programme mentor Nina Siegenthaler of Turks and Caicos Sotheby’s shared.
“There was genuine excitement, and they showed just how much they have learned and retained over these past few months.
“It has been a fulfilling experience sharing the industry with them, and I’m delighted that
one or more of them may now consider real estate as an option for their future career.”
Launched by TCREA Ambassador Trevor Musgrove, the mentorship programme aims to allow high-school and first-year college students to explore real estate through live mentorship sessions with premier industry experts in Turks and Caicos.
Participation was open to all islands, and the inaugural class was comprised of 10 enthusiastic students from Providenciales and North Caicos: Dashawn Brooks and Alyssa Callum of Clement Howell High; Olique Stubbs, Lewis Walkin Jr of Raymond
Gardiner High; Aniyah Bovie of Precious Treasures; Shamya Missick of Maranatha Academy; Pavla Lalakova and Andino Parker of British West Indies Collegiate and Abnise Noel and Antoine Gedeon of Louise Garland Thomas High.
Along with Siegenthaler, the teens had monthly access to Blair MacPherson of REMAX; Manfred Smith of Turks and Caicos Sotheby’s; Vernica Delancy and Dedra Gray of Keller Williams; and Sean O'Neill, Musgrove’s partner The Agency Turks and Caicos.
Asked how he felt about the programme’s start, Musgrove
said: “Overall, I could not have asked for a better outcome. The excitement from both the mentors and the mentees has been amazing to see. We started this initiative to give something of ourselves and our industry to these young men and women, but they have also enriched us.”
Reflecting on the programme’s journey, the Director had one small point of dissatisfaction: “My only wish is that we had seen applications from students in the other islands as well. The Ministry of Education has shown us how serious they are in
The eleventh hour can be critical and miraculous
Have faith and wait a little longer
I don’t know about you, but I used to be very impatient. However, over time, I have learned to put my trust in God knowing no matter how long I have been waiting for something, God will help me to find a way even if it is at the eleventh hour.
Do you remember the story about one of the criminals on the cross with Jesus? At the eleventh hour, while one of the criminals was hung on the cross, he said “Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” You see that criminal got saved at the eleventh hour.
Do you remember the story about Abraham and his son Isaac?
When Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, a ram appeared at
BY DREXWELL SEYMOURthe eleventh hour and so Abraham was able to sacrifice the ram rather than his son.
The eleventh hour can be a very critical time in your life. It is that time that your breakthrough can take place. However, because we lack faith and patience, we may make premature decisions and not wait for our breakthrough.
I know sometimes things seem
impossible and you just don’t see any way out of your situation. However, with God, all things are possible. I have a lot of experience about the eleventh hour and that is why I no longer panic. God always comes through for me and he will come through for you.
I want to share a personal experience with you. As you know, I have an accounting business and
so I provide services and I charge clients based on my time and my staff’s time. There are many times whereby some customers do not pay at all, or they pay late. This of course will impact the cash flow of the company and could delay in the payment of bills including the payment of salaries. There were many moments at the eleventh hour whereby it looked like I would not be able to pay my employees on time. However, on those occasions, God would send me new good paying clients at the eleventh hour which in turn allowed me to make timely payments.
Do not give up on your situation. I encourage you today to wait a little longer. Isaiah 40:31 states that “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they
shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
You see that waiting period is an opportunity to allow you to reflect on yourself and your wants and needs. You may discover that thing you thought you wanted may not be what you need. However, God knows your needs and he will supply them so just wait a little longer.
Your waiting period is an opportunity to test your faith and your relationship with God. Pass the test by waiting on the Lord.
When you don’t wait, you may compromise your integrity and faith in that you may commit some acts that are illegal just to get what you want or need. Do the right thing by putting your trust in God and increasing your faith. God will come through for you even if it is at the eleventh hour.
TCI must upgrade its physical and social infrastructure to sustain economic growth
The tourist industry is booming, the TCI economy is accelerating and if visitors’ arrivals continue to flourish, Providenciales can be catapulted into a giant world-class financial hub, where businesses can thrive and where people can study, work and live.
From this likelihood, and considering the lack of earmarked infrastructure, some important questions have surfaced!
So, I ask, how can this nation –in its current condition – survive the seismic shift that is upon us? And why do we continue to lurk
when all indications of becoming an economic powerhouse are flashing green before our eyes?
The short answer is, if we intend to succeed in this era, the TCI must be ahead of the curve.
We must create innovations with a real-world impact and fashion our infrastructure for the future to meet the needs of the incoming financial waves that promise to escalate the economy beyond all expectations.
As the TCI aspires to become the next financial tier, pertinent statutory bodies and ministries should work toward improving both the physical and social infrastructure in health and wellness, fire and safety, education, financial services, insurance and road network.
While all these sectors require urgent attention and upgrades, it is the lack of public transport – right now – that makes the workforce inefficient. Unquestionably, a public transit system is one of the missing links to the puzzle.
Everyone should know, public
transit will in no way thwart the taxi industry, considering that taxis exist to carry visitors to specific locales, while the public bus system is designed for residents travelling en route to their workplaces, homes and service markets.
In essence, even if the other pertinent sectors are developed, the nation’s workforce will find it difficult to acquire its true potential and production could lag.
Therefore, policymakers must develop a longer-term economic plan for the various sectors to boost TCI’s readiness, while showcasing an economic strategy based on three main pillars. The first is to retain the best people and ensure the talent pool remains strong and vibrant. This includes enhancing the quality of the education system, and attracting quality foreign talents, while maintaining a robust immigration policy.
The second pillar focuses on a world-class workforce, improving employees’ capacity to immediately and efficiently respond to new challenges – as well as –fashioning functioning systems of management, leadership and
governance.
The third pillar aims to reinforce TCI’s next wave of talents, which ensures that the workforce has the necessary skills to compete successfully in the global job market.
In so doing, through governmentlinked corporations, lawmakers should ensure that the government is the major player of gross output in contributing industries and guarantee maximum investments in food, water and energy.
Besides this, the government should engage in limited privatisation, freeing monopolies in determined economic activities, which are already thriving. This move not only engenders the ideal circumstance for the private sector and foreign corporations to invest in TCI’s economy, but it also enables the government to shift its focus to underdeveloped sectors, such as transportation.
Henceforth, if the TCI can improve the relevant infrastructure, the country could potentially move away from servicing only the tourist industry – towards becoming a key
in other areas, such as
Kia Purotu Koe
No, it is not gobbledygook. And it has nothing to do with the car brand Kia. “Kia Purotu Koe” is how people say “Hello” on the Island of Mangareva in Southern Polynesia. It means “May you remain beautiful”. Oh, I tell you, it makes you feel so good. Give it to me 24/7 and this reminder would make me start believing in it since it is a potential compliment! Don’t you think it sounds better than “How are you today?” day in and day out, all year long? It beats a howdy and a handshake big time. Mind, when you do common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.
If I would try on anyone saying it, they would think that I’m off my rocker and put me on the critical list. Say it to a lady and one may get into a fight with her companion, and he will threaten to take your teeth out one by one, especially when he’s got muscles in places where others don’t even have places. Yet, it is so innocent. I would like to be able to hear my heart what the response with her eyes is. But one always has to be aware of the possible consequences of the words that one employs. Like diplomats do. You know? A man who always remembers a woman's birthday but never remembers her age! Their words are like Teflon, they don’t stick. And he never misses a good chance to shut up.
“Kia Purotu Koe” has the flair of a certain “je ne sais quoi”. You may even go further than “May you remain beautiful” by adding the words “May your shadow never diminish.” It will initially
take some courage to do it, but courage is being afraid and doing it anyway. The people that you approach this way may think that there is something about you that reminds them of a fairy tale. It can give them the feeling that you are taking them to the brink of relief and liberation. It is common knowledge that the word of mouth
is of great value. This may be a different interpretation of it. However, there is never anything wrong when you can make a person’s heart flutter with warming words, with flavour in your voice, and eternity on your lips and in your eyes. It brings up anyone’s pulse a beat or two. Wow!
There is another thing that
may flabbergast when greeting someone! A hand kiss, also known as Besamanos. A kiss on the back of a hand can convey appreciation or a deep sense of respect. And sometimes like there is more in the package. It may express so much drama, almost like saying, “I am at your behest”. Nothing wrong with that in a customer service

extending the support needed. Because of it, the students from North Caicos had the transportation and chaperone necessary to facilitate their participation. We would love to see students from all the islands take advantage of the access so that we can share this opportunity with them all.”
The programme exposed the teens to the technical and practical sides of the profession. Terminology, securing a listing, marketing, selling a listing, professional etiquette, and following a strict code of ethics have all been shared with them. The programme's highlight was the open house exercise, which gave the mentees an opportunity for a real-time showing of a luxury oceanfront villa in Long Bay to a group of mock buyers, including the Minister of Education, Hon Rachel Taylor.
“To watch this programme materialise and grow has been an exceptional experience, Hon Taylor said.
She added: These are the opportunities our school leavers need to know are out there, and I applaud Mr Musgrove and his committee for doing their part in exposing our young men and women to this flourishing industry that is available to them right here in our islands.”
The minister said she had the pleasure of visiting several sessions and was an inch away from buying a villa from the very bright and persuasive Andino Parker at the open house.
“The energy and excitement from the students were all the testament necessary to confirm that this was a much-needed, fresh opportunity that many will be delighted to take advantage of.”
The Ministry of Education has previously shared that the programme aligns perfectly with the new Youth Policy, which incorporates seven pillars.
Pillar 1 focuses on Enhancing Youth
Economic Participation and Economic Empowerment. Both the association and the ministry have expressed hope that the mentorship opportunity will result in more Turks and Caicos islanders becoming interested in joining the thriving sector, aiding in its sustainability, and opening other doors to local entrepreneurship.
TCREA Ambassador Musgrove expressed his gratitude to the real estate association for sanctioning the programme and to his colleagues for dedicating their time to mentoring the participants.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for the support this programme has received. I am grateful to the TCREA Board of Directors for giving the programme the green light and to Honourable Rachel Taylor and her team for their support and presence throughout the programme. I must extend special thanks to my colleagues for sharing their time and knowledge and to
department environment or the hospitality industry in general. It is a gesture like a promise. In the modern world, wherein people may be accused of appropriation and even mockery, people have shied away from this old-age tradition. Nowadays people are not accustomed to the brilliance of chivalry.
The hand kiss is symbolic and shows that one is courteous. It will come over as being considered a person of a high ecclesiastical position. There may be a fear that the meaning will be lost or misconstrued. It certainly will be if the hand kiss is followed by the words: “Don’t I know you from the Golden Globes Awards celebration?” It may create an unusual and surprising miracle in communication. But then again, the response may come in the form of a blessing for communicating so much admiration. Where did the age of chivalry go where the combination of knightly qualities were expected, namely courage, honour, courtesy, justice, and a readiness to help the weak?
“Kia Purotu Koe” doesn’t get out of my head. In my idle time, I dream a lot. Maybe it is just the meaning “May you remain beautiful” that intrigues me. Wouldn’t you want to remain beautiful? Well, if anyone intends to get rid of me, give me a oneway ticket to Mangareva and I’ll be on my way. How about creating a collection for it? Want to come along too? Just to remain beautiful? You may not be committing a mistake! Beauty is never a mistake. Ask a beautician.
SOS Media for the public relations and social media support. Most of all, I am humbled by the community's feedback and encouragement. I am ready to return to work for round two of the programme.”
Musgrove also presented certificates of participation and appreciation to the mentees and mentors, also sharing his thanks to the media for their support throughout the life of the programme. Saturday’s close-out ended with a celebratory lunch sponsored and hosted by Big Al’s Island Grill in Salt Mills, Grace Bay.
Another ten spots will be available for the programme’s second round, which begins in January 2023.
Interested parents and students are encouraged to look out for the invitation for applicants in December 2022 and to follow the TCREA Mentorship Programme’s Facebook page for information and updates.
Footsteps4Good dubbed better than previous years
BY DELANA ISLESSome $60,000 and counting has been raised so far during the annual Footsteps4Good charity event put on by Mrs Amanda Dakin, wife of the Governor.
Speaking with the Weekly News this week about the two-week trek across the territory – from October 22 to November 3 – Mrs Dakin said this year’s charity donations – monetary and otherwise – may well end up being the biggest yet.
The event raises money for all local charities, and this year 30 registered charities and three South Caicos schools will be recipients.
“I know the money goes a long way… because last year Provo Children’s Home told me it kept food on the table.
“Thirty-three charities will benefit from this year’s fundraising and not one of them will be left out,” she promised.
She said they have done amazingly well this year: “We have now raised over $60,000 thanks to the generosity of so many businesses and individuals, and I still hope to bring in a few more
– More money raised for local charities
dollars for our local charities so it’s not over yet.”
Day one of the event started with a six-mile hike from the Bight to Leeward community, then a kayak across the Leeward channel to Little Water Cay. This was followed by an eight-mile hike along the beach to Pine Cay, culminating with a half-day hike and swim via Fort George, Dellis Cay and ending at Parrot Cay resort.
Whew!
But that’s not all, they still had a long way to go. More than 230 miles to go, to be precise, across 24 islands and cays in total.
“Footsteps4Good this year was better than last year.” Mrs Dakin, who started and ended the event, said.
“Sharon Weil Hornstein and I, we did it all!”
John Galleymore, a well-known island adventurer - who came up with the route for the event - joined the trekkers on East Caicos and
kept them safe.
They were joined for the rowing by all girls’ team Kaja Lepczyńska and Morgan Luker, with help from Adam Foster and Jamie Pollen, who met them halfway to French Cay and supported the group all the way into Sapodilla Bay.
There were also community walks on all the populated islands starting at the crack of dawn, the longest route being Bellefield landing to Mudjin Harbour.
School children came out again this year to join the group, as did officers of the TCI Regiment on Providenciales and Grand Turk.
THE EXPERIENCE
This is Mrs Dakin’s second and last year hosting the event, but she said she may be coming back just to participate.
“It is my last year, but you never know maybe I’ll be back to participate in part of it at least.”
As for the future of the event,
she noted: “I don’t know who is going to take on the organisation as it takes up a significant amount of time, however, whoever it is will have a significant file handed to them to get the event started and I know John Galleymore will always be on hand to add some creative twists to the event.”
She has hopes it can go international: “I would love to see the event evolve into something much bigger and to bring with it, international participants. It could be huge, but let’s see what happens next.”
“To say I have loved the experience may be belittling the significance of such an event. To have started this year knowing what was coming felt mad. The variation in terrain - hot tarmac, spiky iron shore, sinking sands; the fatigue which accumulates day after day and a smattering of mosquitoes and blisters messes with your head before you even start.
“Saying all of that I would not have changed it for the worldwhat an experience walking with the communities on all the family islands and being uplifted by their enthusiasm was fabulous.
“To experience the diversity of all the islands, stunning sunrises and sunsets, to have pelicans and dolphins escort you is phenomenal and when it came to the team this year, they were phenomenal.”
She recalled the amazingly calm seas the group encountered while crossing to Grand Turk in record time, a crossing supported by East Bay Resort, then on to Salt Cay with Deep Blue Charters.
“Richard from Salt Cay Divers guided us safely to Great Sand Cay where once again we were supported by East Bay before being handed off to bear from Ambergris Cay.”
She noted: “This is what makes the pain and the tiredness worth it. The people who support you on the way our partners, the Provo Road Runners, the Red Cross and Inter Health Canada, they all went out of their way to make the event successful.”
OVER A THOUSAND CELEBRATE IN THE PINK AT THE PALMS
Over a thousand persons went down the rabbit hole and experienced the wonders of the twelfth annual In The Pink event two Saturdays ago at The Palms.
The theme was “Alice in Wonderland” and the magic was on full display with some fashionable costumes to relive the enchanting tale.
Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit all attended the party and it was a success. Funds raised from the event went to the
National Cancer Society and according to information over $85,000 was raised for the cause, which broke the previous record of $75,000 in 2019.
Information from the Shore Club indicated that the annual gala hosted “a mega-shopping frenzy where The Palms transforms rooms and suites into a shopper’s dream come true offering incredible deals on new and gently used designer clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories as well as jewellery and other
fabulous offerings”.
Many of the rooms offered signature cocktails and champagne as well as delicious gourmet treats.
“The entire resort was buzzing with excitement and laughter as guests wandered from room to room to see all the wonderful sales and grab the best deals early.
“There were also dozens of very generous silent auction items and Pink’s long-time sponsor, and generous partner
Jai’s Jewelers featured an incredible raffle prize, a dazzling diamond necklace which raised $15,200 all being donated to the National Cancer Society.”
After the shopping, crowds transitioned into the courtyard for the theme event, while there was a sip and paint area and “plenty of room to lounge and socialise”.
The ballroom was also the venue for the sold-out popular Pink Poker Tournament, which was sponsored by Casablanca Casino.
‘WE GOIN’ KEW’ DEEMED A HUGE SUCCESS
The WE GOIN' KEW' festival was a huge success bringing people together to experience a cultural explosion in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
On Saturday, November 19, 2022, residents from across the TCI chain found their way to the Bellefield Landing in Kew, North Caicos, to enjoy food and cultural performances organised by the Turks and Caicos Islands Unity Committee.
The inaugural charity event has been described as the biggest festival of the year with an estimated two thousand people in attendance.
The event also had 15 vendors, serving local Twin Island dishes, and featured three local bands, and artistes from The Turks and Caicos Islands and The Bahamas.
Proceeds garnered from the WE GOIN' KEW Festival will support key projects across North and Middle Caicos and assist with completing the homeroom at Ashley's Learning Center, according to the Director of the TCI Unity Community, Mr Alvin Hegner.
Hegner told the Weekly News that: "This charitable event was held for the people of the Twin Islands and Ashley's Learning Centre”.
He said: “We wanted to give back to the community while showcasing local food vendors and craft and farmers' markets.
“On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to express thanks and appreciation to the people of the Twin Islands for their unwavering support and for helping us to create an extraordinary outcome. Thanks to Sharmaine Clarke for her coordinating efforts on the Twin Islands.
“A special thanks to the event's sponsors for making it all happen in various ways: The Wine Cellar, Turks Head Brewery, Anderson Media, Big Josh Country Club, Play Big Win Big Entertainment, Prime DJ's, JACA TCI , Grant Thornton, LEW 1 Shipping, Rasco Sounds, Building Materials, Do it Center, Engel & Volkers, Wymara Resort and Villas, Fortis TCI, FLOW, Dragon Cay Resort, Digicel, MEP Solutions: Electrical and Plumbing, HAB Group, Waratah Construction TCI, RED Hospitality and Leisure and Lady Grace, Catamaran, Mac N Cheese Adventures, The Strand, Beaches Turks and Caicos, BCQS, Turquoise Horizons, Franks Hardware, Delta Electric, AE&S Construction, COMO Hotels and Resorts, Caicos Isle Management, Island Drilling, Ports Authority, Turks and Caicos Islands, Robinsons’s Variety, Island Convenience - Grace Bay, Got You Covered, Reliable Security, Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, TCI Ministry Of Health, District Commissioner Of North Caicos Madam Musgrove, and the District Commissioner of Middle Caicos Sir Delancy.”
The WE GOIN' KEW Festival is now an annual event and preparations are already underway for the second event on Saturday, November 4, 2023.
The proceeds from WE GOIN' KEW 2023 will assist with housing projects throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.
TCI Unity is a non-profit organisation geared towards helping those in need in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the TCI Unity distributed over 500 meal boxes to families in need throughout the country.
Spain boosts security as PM and US embassy targeted amid series of letter bombs
SPAIN said Thursday it was boosting security measures after a series of letter bombs was discovered in the country, including one that was sent to Spain’s prime minister last week and another to the US embassy.
The sixth and latest bomb was detected Thursday afternoon and sent to the US embassy in Madrid. It was intercepted at around 12.30 p.m. local time at the security post of the embassy, a police source told CNN. A special protocol was activated for these cases, the source added.
“We are grateful to Spanish law enforcement for their assistance with this matter,” Jamie Martin, a spokeswoman for the US Embassy in Madrid, told CNN.
A previous bomb, sent to an air force base near Madrid, was discovered before dawn Thursday, after one exploded at the Ukrainian embassy in the capital Wednesday and another was deactivated at an arms manufacturer.
A device addressed to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez arrived in the post at his official Moncloa
compound on November 24 and his security detail singled it out as suspicious. After establishing a security perimeter, they conducted a “controlled explosion” of the envelope, an interior ministry statement said.
The bomb “would be similar, for its features and content” to those received on Wednesday at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid and at the arms manufacturer Instalaza in Zaragoza, and on Thursday at Spain’s Torrejon air force base near Madrid, the statement said.
The most recent letter bomb was intercepted just before dawn Thursday after being sent to the Torrejon air force base.
Spanish defense ministry officials said a suspicious envelope was detected by a scanner at the base. The scan indicated the envelope could have “some type of mechanism” inside, a statement said. Police were called to the base to analyze the envelope, which was addressed to the Satellite Center at the air base.
The Spanish defense ministry also received a letter bomb
addressed to Defense Minister Margarita Robles, the Secretary of State for Security Rafael Perez said Thursday.
Perez said the letters were likely sent from Spanish territory, and that in four out of the five cases, protection measures worked successfully to neutralise the bombs.
People should remain “calm,” the minister said, and there was no reason yet to justify raising a terror threat.
EARLIER TARGETS
The latest developments followed the discovery of two letter bombs on Wednesday. The first exploded at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid in the afternoon, injuring an employee, Spanish officials
said.
That envelope, addressed to the Ukrainian ambassador to Spain, exploded after being handled by a Ukrainian worker at the embassy, Spain’s foreign ministry said in a statement. Later, in the evening, police deactivated a letter bomb at a weapons manufacturer in northern Spain, a senior Spanish official said.
The envelope sent to the arms maker had the same return address as the envelope that exploded at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, said the official, Rosa Serrano, in an interview with Spain’s radio station SER late Wednesday.
“The return address on the envelope is an email that is the same” on both envelopes, said Serrano, who is the top Spanish
government official in the Aragon region where the second letter bomb arrived.
The envelope at the weapons maker in the city of Zaragoza, in Aragon, “apparently came from Ukraine,” Serrano said, adding that authorities suspect the one at the embassy may have also come from Ukraine.
An executive at the arms manufacturer was apparently aware of the Madrid explosion, so when an envelope arrived soon after that no one seemed to recognise, the company called police, Serrano said.
The bomb squad arrived and police determined there were explosives inside the envelope, designed to explode on opening. It was deactivated, Serrano said.
China signals ease in Covid policy after mass protests
CHINA has signalled a shift in its Covid stance as it moves to ease some virus restrictions despite high daily case numbers.
Dozens of districts in Shanghai and Guangzhou, cities that have seen rising cases, were released from lockdown measures on Thursday.
The country’s vice-premier also announced that the country was facing a “new situation”.
It comes as China is seeing mass protests against its zero-Covid policy.
The unrest was triggered by a fire in a high-rise block in the western Xinjiang region that killed 10 people last week. Many Chinese believe long-running Covid restrictions in the city contributed to the deaths, although the authorities deny this.
It led to days of widespread protests across various cities, which have since ebbed amid a heavy police presence.
Restrictions in major cities like Guangzhou were abruptly lifted on Wednesday, hours after the city
saw violent protests that resulted in clashes between police and protesters.
A community in the capital Beijing also allowed Covid cases with mild symptoms to isolate
at home, according to a Reuters report - a far cry from protocols earlier this year which saw entire buildings and communities locked down, sometimes as a result of just one positive case.
Other major cities like Shanghai and Chongqing also saw some rules relaxed.
It comes as one of China’s most senior pandemic officials, vicepremier Sun Chunlan, said the
virus’ ability to cause disease was weakening.
“The country is facing a new situation and new tasks in epidemic prevention and control as the pathogenicity of the Omicron virus weakens, more people are vaccinated and experience in containing the virus is accumulated,” she said, according to a Reuters report.
This comes in stark contrast to an earlier message from authorities that the country needed to maintain a strict zero-Covid policy.
Former state media editor Hu Xijin, who now offers proCommunist Party commentary on Twitter, insisted the moves showed China was now “speeding up to cast aside large-scale lockdowns”.
Following the lifting of lockdown measures in many parts of Guangzhou, Lijin Hong, an associate professor at Sun Yat-sen University, said it would “take a while for the city to recover. Yet it is awesome to see Guangzhou city again.”
Hakeem Jeffries: The Democrat who is replacing Nancy Pelosi as leader
US lawmaker Hakeem Jeffries has been unanimously elected to succeed Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives.
The four-term New York congressman, 52, has served in the fifth-highest rank of Democratic leadership since 2019.
With his ascension to the top spot, held by Mrs Pelosi for two decades, he will be the first black person to lead a major party in the US Congress.
But he would be minority leader, and not the speaker.
In the US midterm elections earlier this month, Republicans failed to secure the “red wave” of victories many had predicted but regained a slim majority in the House, Congress’ lower chamber.
California Republican Kevin McCarthy, who currently serves as minority leader, was nominated as the party’s choice to be House speaker but he must win a majority vote of the full House - 218 votes - in January to secure the role.
When Mrs Pelosi, 82, announced her retirement on 17 November, she said: “The hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus.”
The move was apparently co-ordinated with Mrs Pelosi’s top two deputies - Steny Hoyer, 83, and Jim Clyburn, 82 - who quickly followed suit by releasing

statements on their future plans.
Both men endorsed Mr Jeffries, with Mr Clyburn writing that his focus was “doing whatever I can to assist our new generation of Democratic Leaders, which I hope to be Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar”.
In a letter to his party colleagues, Mr Jeffries had asked Democrats for their support “as we once again
prepare to meet the moment”.
At the time, he lauded Mrs Pelosi as “the most accomplished Speaker in American history”, writing that she had been “the steady hand on the gavel during some of the most turbulent times the nation has ever confronted”.
In closed-door leadership elections this week, Congresswoman Katherine Clark,
Ian Blackford to stand down as SNP leader at Westminster
IAN Blackford is to stand down as leader of the SNP group at Westminster, it has been confirmed.
Mr Blackford said he believed it was time for “fresh leadership” after five years in the role.
He said he would formally stand down at the group’s annual general meeting next week.
There has been speculation in recent weeks that some SNP MPs were plotting to replace Mr Blackford as group leader.
In a statement, he said he would continue in his role as the MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber and had also accepted a new role at the centre of the SNP’s independence campaign.
Mr Blackford said: “After more than five years in the role, now is the right time for fresh leadership at Westminster as we head towards a general election and the next steps in winning Scotland’s
independence.
“During my time as leader, the SNP won a landslide victory in the 2019 general election, with an increased share of the vote and MPs, and support for independence has continued to grow with polling this week showing a majority in favour.”
Mr Blackford has become as well-known figure in the House of Commons through his weekly appearance at Prime Minister’s Questions.
He faced calls to resign from political opponents after the Daily Mail reported in June that it had obtained a recording of Mr Blackford urging fellow MPs to give “absolute full support” to SNP MP Patrick Grady, who was suspended for sexual misconduct.
Mr Grady, a former SNP chief whip, was suspended from Parliament for two days over a
sexual advance towards a colleague in 2016, and also suspended from the SNP’s Westminster group for a week.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP leader, subsequently said that the support expressed for Mr Grady had been “unacceptable”.
There have been reports that some SNP MPs were also unhappy at Mr Blackford’s handling of the case, with Aberdeen South MP Stephen Flynn recently dismissing suggestions that he was “on manoeuvres” with a view to replacing him as group leader.
At the time, Mr Blackford made clear that he intended to stand for re-election to the post at the upcoming AGM.
He also denied rumours in March that he was considering resigning amid further reports of party infighting.
SNP sources have told BBC
59, of Massachusetts won the post of whip, the number two Democratic leadership job, while Pete Aguilar, 43, of California, currently vice-chairman of the caucus, was chosen to succeed Mr Jeffries in the role of caucus chairman.
The leadership shuffle will do much to quell complaints from some Democratic voters that their party’s leaders are too old.
But the trio of young up-andcomers is seen as being more closely aligned with the party’s establishment wing, and Mr Jeffries in particular has been known to clash on occasion with his party’s left flank.
A lawyer who was born and raised in the Brooklyn borough of New York, he served in the New York State Assembly before running for the House in 2013.
His message was simple: “Washington is broken. Congress is dysfunctional. People are suffering. We deserve more.”
During the campaign, he was touted as the “Barack Obama of Brooklyn”, a comparison he rejected because he saw little professional resemblance to the then-president.
Since taking federal office, he has positioned himself as an outspoken Democrat, popular with most colleagues and growing in influence.
As whip for the Congressional
Black Caucus, he led members in protest on the House floor in 2015 against the killing of AfricanAmericans by police.
He once paid tribute on the House floor to rapper The Notorious B.I.G., who was born as Christopher Wallace in Mr Jeffries’ district and gunned down in Los Angeles in 1997.
On the 20th anniversary of his death, the congressman said that the hip hop artist represented “the classic embodiment of the American Dream” and rapped some lyrics from his 1994 hit single Juicy.
During the Trump presidency, Mr Jeffries frequently attacked “radical Republicans” who were “bending the knee to Donald Trump”.
In 2020, he served as one of seven Democratic managers at President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial.
He has also warned that Mr McCarthy - his Republican counterpart in the next Congress - is “a wholly owned subsidiary of Donald Trump and the Trump machine”.
With Democrats retaining power in the upper chamber of Congress, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer will remain at his post. That means the Democratic leaders in both chambers of Congress will hail from the state of New York.

Lady Susan Hussey’s race comments were abuse, says charity boss
A BLACK British charity boss who was repeatedly asked where she was “really” from at a royal reception has told the BBC the encounter was “abuse”.
Ngozi Fulani was questioned about her background by Lady Susan Hussey, Prince William’s godmother, at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. The late Queen’s ladyin-waiting has since resigned.
Ms Fulani likened the conversation with Lady Hussey, 83, to “an interrogation”.
The palace described the remarks as “unacceptable and deeply regrettable”.
And a spokesperson for Prince William said “racism has no place in our society”. The incident has overshadowed the Prince and Princess of Wales’s visit to the US to hand out awards for his Earthshot Prize.
Ms Fulani was a guest at the reception representing domestic violence charity Sistah Space when she described Lady Hussey moving her hair to see her name badge, and then challenging her repeatedly to explain where she was from.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Ms Fulani described how the conversation unfolded.
“It was like an interrogation. I
guess the only way I can explain it, she’s determined: ‘Where are you from? Where are your people from?’”
Ms Fulani also rebuffed suggestions that Lady Hussey’s remarks had anything to do with her age.
“Let us be clear what this is. I’ve heard so many suggestions it’s about her age and stuff like that, and I think that’s kind of a disrespectan ageism kind of thing.
“I have to really question how this can happen in a space that’s supposed to protect women against all kinds of violence.
“Although it’s not physical violence - it is an abuse.”
Ms Fulani continued: “If you invite people to an event, against domestic abuse, and there are people there from different demographics, I don’t see the relevance of whether I’m British or not British.
“I’m very proud of my African heritage. This is like the Windrush thing to me. You’re trying to make me unwelcome in my own space.”
She added she felt like she was being asked to “denounce my British citizenship”.
Lady Hussey was a key figure in the Royal Household for many decades, having started working
for the Royal Family in the same year the Queen gave birth to Prince Andrew, eventually becoming her longest-serving lady-in-waiting.
Buckingham Palace announced last week that Lady Hussey and the other former ladies-in-waiting would subsequently be known as “ladies of the household” - a role which involves helping to host occasions at the palace.
Asked if she had wanted Lady Hussey to resign or if she would have been content with an apology, Ms Fulani said: “I would have preferred it did not happen...
“I have to keep the focus where it should be and that’s against violence against women and girls.”
An eyewitness to the conversation, leader of the Women’s Equality Party Mandu Reid, told BBC News that Lady Hussey’s questions had been “offensive,
racist and unwelcoming”.
In its statement on Wednesday, Buckingham Palace said: “We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to establish the full details.
“In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made. We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes.
“In the meantime, the individual concerned would like to express her profound apologies for the hurt caused and has stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect.
“All members of the household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times.”
A spokesperson for Prince William said “racism has no place
in our society”, adding: “The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect”.
In an interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Ms Fulani said Buckingham Palace had not contacted her about the incident, insisting she would accept an invitation to discuss it with them.
“See, what we’re about is positive results, so absolutely, I think a discussion should be held,” she said.
Ms Fulani, who was representing her charity which supports women of African and Caribbean heritage across the UK who have faced domestic and sexual abuse, was one of 300 guests at the event where the Queen Consort, Camilla, had warned of a “global pandemic of violence against women”. (BBC)
Trump taxes: US lawmakers get access to former president’s returns
Donald Trump’s tax returns have been handed over to a committee of the US House of Representatives after the former president lost a long legal battle to keep them sealed.
The Treasury Department said it had complied with a Supreme Court order that the records should be given to a panel in the Democrat-controlled House.
It is not clear if the returns will be made public, or what they will reveal.
Mr Trump is yet to comment, but has previously denied any wrongdoing.
He declined to release the documents during his 2016 presidential run or subsequentlybreaking a decades-old presidential custom.
Mr Trump recently announced a bid to run for the White House again in 2024, and has described the efforts to obtain his tax documents as politically motivated.
Various details about his finances have already emerged as he faces a range of investigations, including into his business dealings.
It is therefore unknown whether the tax return information will yield any major new revelations.
Following Wednesday’s announcement from the Treasury Department, a congressional committee now has access to his returns for the years 2015-2020.
It was not disclosed whether the committee had immediately accessed the documents.
The panel in question - the Ways and Means Committee - is
investigating whether presidents are being properly audited, and whether new laws are needed.
However, it may not have long to do its work.
The House will only be controlled by the Democratic Party for a few more weeks, before Mr Trump’s Republicans take over in January - after winning a slim majority in last month’s midterm elections.
The committee made its first request for Mr Trump’s tax documents in 2019, after the Democrats took over the House.
Mr Trump took legal steps to block any such release, though ultimately failed when the Supreme Court last week cleared the way for his papers to be accessed by the panel. (BBC)

Atlantic hurricane season ends, breaking the six-year streak of above-normal seasons
THE 2022 Atlantic hurricane season ends Nov. 30 with a final tally of 14 named storms, eight hurricanes and two major hurricanes. Originally expected to be an above-average season, this year’s season wraps up as the first near-average season since 2015. The last six years have seen a streak of above-average seasons from 2016 to 2021.
NOAA’s pre-season outlook published in May called for 14-21 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes, and 3-6 major hurricanes.
Matthew Rosencrans, the lead hurricane forecaster at the CPC, verified in a news release that the 2022 seasonal activity fell within NOAA’s predicted ranges. Originally, the Climate Prediction Center at NOAA gave a 25% chance of a near-normal season.
Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences also publishes several outlooks before and during the season. The observed conditions are below what CSU originally expected for this season. The CSU outlook published in April originally predicted 19 storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes.
Phil Klotzbach, senior research scientist at CSU’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences, said he characterizes this season as “the most abnormal, normal hurricane
season on record.”
“We had no storms in August, a very busy September, a quiet October and a very busy November,” Klotzbach said.
The pacing of this season, Klotzbach explained, is what makes it so “abnormal.” According to the National Hurricane Center, most Atlantic activity occurs between mid-August and mid-October.
However, there were no named storms between July 3 and Aug. 31,
the first time this has occurred since 1941. October also ended with the lowest Accumulated Cyclone Energy, a metric used by NOAA to measure frequency, intensity and duration of tropical activity, since 2009. The three hurricanes formed during November ties 2022 with 2001 for the most November Atlantic hurricane formations on record. And Hurricane Nicole made history as the latest calendar year hurricane to make landfall on
Florida’s east coast ever.
September saw the most activity, and destruction. Six storms including the two major hurricanes of this year, Fiona and Ian, brought high winds, flooding and storm surge to Puerto Rico and Florida, respectively.
Hurricane Fiona brought over two feet of rain to some areas of Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Ian had the fifth strongest winds on record. The latter is also shaping
up to be a multi-billion-dollar event with more than a hundred fatalities.
Kloztbach said this season highlights that a hurricane season can have peaks and troughs.
“You can have busy times during an otherwise quiet season, or you can have quiet time during a busy season,” he said.
One factor that contributed to dampening tropical activity, Klotzbach said, is more vertical wind shear than was anticipated. Wind shear is the change in wind direction and speed. High wind shear tends to “tear up” systems while less shear creates more favorable conditions for tropical cyclones to develop. Interestingly, this hurricane season coincided with a La Niña weather pattern, which typically brings lower shear.
“This is one of the reasons it was surprising we ended up with higher shear, despite La Niña,” Klotzbach said.
La Niña years increase the chances of a landfalling hurricane, with a 40% chance of a 10 billion dollar or higher disaster along the east coast, according to Klotzbach.
Though we are half a year away from the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, weather emergencies can happen year-round. Make sure to stay connected to your local emergency management and have a way to receive alerts. (Wuft.org)
Bahamas surveying shanty towns with aim to crack down on problem
THE GOVERNMENT’S shanty town committee has started surveying several irregular communities in the country as it seeks to crack down on the growing problem, according to Works and Utilities Minister Alfred Sears.
He said this week that surveys will have to be expanded to more islands that are also grappling with the vexing issue.
A multi-agency committee, composed of representatives from various government departments, ministries and law enforcement agencies, was formed earlier this year in response to the illegal developments.
The group was given a 45day deadline in September to review and survey people living in the unregulated developments and another 15 days to report back to ministry officials with recommendations on the way forward.
When asked for an update on the committee’s work yesterday, Mr Sears said an assessment of those communities was already underway, but he could not say when preliminary reports would be completed by the group.
However, once completed, the minister said officials will compare the data with previous surveys to determine the degree of expansion in those areas.
“They’ve started to work,” he told reporters before going to a Cabinet meeting yesterday. “There are a number of surveys which are being done. Those surveys will have to be expanded because it has come to our attention in other islands, other than the ones we were focused on initially, that there are communities which are irregular, which are squatting on land, so, the scope has had to be expanded.
“And that means more resources
in terms of aerial surveys, in terms of persons going in and ascertaining who are in these communities. So the preparatory work is ongoing and you know, this is not a matter that has just developed overnight.”
He added: “It really requires a national survey, because it is not restricted to one or two islands, but there are multiple islands and we want to address it comprehensively.
Clearly, there will be international implications.
“And our communication is being made with multilateral bodies concerned with emigration and resettlement issues so that we are dealing with the national issues, but certainly, the rule of law has to be maintained and the response has to be comprehensive.”
There have been heightened
calls in recent months for the government to address the issue of shanty towns due to an increasing number of illegal communities springing up on several islands, including Abaco, Eleuthera and Andros.
Mr Sears said yesterday before action can be taken, there must be preparation as the matter calls for a multi-agency approach.
“It involves multiple government agencies, the natural resources of the country and multiple interests, because in some areas from the intelligence we are getting, you have Bahamians who are leasing land on which some of these irregular communities are located,” he added.
He also highlighted Andros as one such island where these activities were taking place, saying “Andros is one of the places which has been brought to our attention most recently.”

Richard Drax: Jamaica eyes slavery reparations from Tory MP
JAMAICA is considering whether to seek compensation from a wealthy Conservative MP for his family’s historical role in slavery.
Richard Drax’s ancestors were pioneers of the sugar and slave trades in the Caribbean about 400 years ago.
The MP is facing demands to pay Barbados for harm caused by slavery at an estate he inherited in the country.
Now Jamaica’s National Council on Reparations is also examining the case for pressing Mr Drax for damages.
Mr Drax said he did not wish to comment on the reparations claims.
The case came to the attention of the Jamaican council after British newspaper reports suggested the government of Barbados was planning to demand reparations from Mr Drax.
It is thought to be the first time a government has urged a family to pay compensation for the role of their forebears in the slave trade.
Between the 16th and 19th centuries, millions of Africans were enslaved and transported across the Atlantic by Europeans and Americans as a labour force to work, especially on plantations.
Members of the Drax family were among the earliest English colonists to establish sugar plantations built on slave labour in Barbados and Jamaica in the Caribbean.
A member of the Drax family received compensation when the slave trade was abolished by the British Parliament in 1833.
Records show John Sawbridge Erle-Drax was awarded £4,293 12s 6d - worth £3m today - for 189 slaves.
Mr Drax has previously said his family’s slave-trading past was “deeply, deeply regrettable”, but “no one can be held responsible today for what happened many hundreds of years ago”.
The 617-acre Drax Hall plantation in Barbados was passed down the family line until the MP inherited the estate, where sugar cane is still grown, from his father in 2017.
For years, reparations campaigners have been calling on
Haiti still needs foreign strike force to confront gangs, official says
THE international community should send a strike force to Haiti to confront gangs even though police have ended a blockade of a fuel terminal that caused a humanitarian crisis, Haiti’s ambassador to the United States said this week.
The U.N. Security Council in October discussed sending troops to confront gangs, but those proposals have received little attention since police took back control of the Varreux terminal in November.
“The situation has not changed, the opening of the fuel terminal did not bring a solution to the problem,” said Bocchit Edmond in an interview at the Haitian embassy in Washington, adding that gangs continue to expand their territory.
“If you don’t have an
international presence to help confront the armed gangs, the situation will become even more dire,” he warned.
Such a force should support the police, and troops should be provided by what he called a “coalition of the willing for Haiti,” Edmond said.
Most countries have appeared skeptical of sending troops to Haiti.
Brazil’s incoming government is unlikely to provide military assistance to Haiti, two officials said, noting that Brazil’s participation in the MINUSTAH U.N. peacekeeping force, which operated in Haiti from 2004 to 2017, was unpopular.
Gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier in September blocked the entrance to the fuel terminal
Mr Drax to donate the property to Barbadians, but he has not done so.
The BBC has been told the South Dorset MP recently visited Barbados, where he had a meeting with its prime minister, Mia Mottley.
JAMAICA’S REPARATIONS CASE
A different branch of the Drax family founded a plantation in Jamaica in the 17th century. William Drax established the estate but it was later sold to different owners.
Men and women “were brutalised in Jamaica” under the Drax name, said Verene Shepherd, director of the Centre for Reparation Research at The University of the West Indies.
The professor of social history said families who can trace their inheritance to slavery should be held accountable, “whether they want to say they’re responsible or not”.
She said “insofar as [Richard Drax’s] lineage is connected to William Drax” and “inheritance was passed down along the linewhether from Jamaica or Barbados - then I think we should also join Barbados in pressing a case for reparations”.
She said the National Council on Reparations should investigate “where that money from Jamaica went”.
The council examines the past injustices suffered by victims of slavery and advises the Jamaican government on what form compensation should take.
Its chairwoman, Laleta DavisMattis, said she would convene a meeting to discuss the case for claiming reparations from Mr Drax.
She said the council needed to review the link between Mr Drax’s family and slavery in Jamaica “to make a substantive judgement and recommendation”.
‘HIGH HURDLE’
Matthew Parker, who researched the family’s history for his book, The Sugar Barons, said there was an ancestral connection between Richard Drax and the Drax plantation owners in Jamaica.
The author said there was a debate about the legitimacy of reparations claims over injustices suffered centuries ago.
“The extreme example is: shouldn’t the Italians be paying [the UK] for the Roman invasion?” he said.
Mr Parker said targeting individuals for reparations was a departure from the approach up until now, which has been to put claims to governments.
Caribbean countries have sought slavery reparations from European governments for several years with limited success. Descendants of slaves have also brought lawsuits against companies for their involvement in the trade, with few wins.
The case against Mr Drax is undoubtedly a tough one, said Martyn Day, the founder of law firm Leigh Day.
In 2012, Mr Day won compensation for hundreds of Kenyans tortured by the British colonial government in the 1950s.
“That was a tough case but we won it,” he said. “It’s a high hurdle to get any case going which is hundreds of years old.”
He said any serious case would have to establish that Mr Drax had benefited from the assets and wealth his forefathers had gained in the slave trade.
Mr Day said the most likely route to win compensation would be in a British court. (BBC)
in response to a decision by the government of President Ariel Henry to cut fuel subsidies.
The nearly six-weeks-long blockade prevented the distribution of gasoline and diesel, halting most
economic activity and creating critical shortages of basic goods just as the country reported a renewed outbreak of cholera.
Barbecue on Nov 6 said workers could return to the terminal,
and fuel distribution has slowly resumed since then.
But gang activity including kidnappings and confrontations with police have jumped as day-today activity resumed. (Reuters)

Local rapper urges TCI youth to ‘Stop the Violence’ with inspiring music video
Local rap artist, Andy Missick ‘Yung Blacks’ has taken an assertive step forward, using his talent to promote unity among the young men of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Missick is a familiar face throughout the Islands – particularly through his community work as a social worker, working with the youth through mentorship and providing service above self with his Rotaract colleagues.
Recently the young artist released a music video titled ‘Stop the Violence’; it came at a time when the territory was, and still is, fighting a scourge of violence that has left many local families grieving the loss of loved ones.
The music video comprises of a short skit acted out by teen basketball players. The teens were playing basketball which resulted in one of the boys receiving a ‘dirty foul’. This then led to an altercation between the boys.
Missick and others, who were courtside, ran onto the court and intervened by parting the fight, with Leo Lightbourne – a local author and filmmaker - delivering an impactful lecture followed by another from Benson Williams, local filmmaker.
The two young men spoke about violence not being the way to resolve conflicts, and violence
not being the culture of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The music video consisted of many different messages attempting to change the mindsets of youth toward violence.
The video shows Missick rapping about the negative impact that violence has, the spiritual consequences of violence in the form of karma, history of trauma that may be leading to violence and what it means to be a ‘Real Man’ attempting to alter the perspectives of young men and women on violence, influencing them not to engage in violence against each other.
The ‘Stop the Violence’ video was recorded by Kilo Walkin also known as Tchart. av, and the photos were taken by photographer Jelani Riviere. Other special appearances in the video included Cam Missick, clothing brand owner; Rudi Delancy, rap artist; Donnie Gardiner Youth Parliamentarian and Rotaractor; Abimael Martinez, coach; as well as Jude Thermitus, Allen Gedeon, Aziline Gedeon and Love Jean as the teen basketball players.
Earlier this year, Missick won the award for Best Music Video at the inaugural ADIP Film Festival for his song ‘Thank You Lord’.
The music video for “Stop the Violence” can be found on Missick’s YouTube channel “Andy Yung Blacks Missick”.
Christine McVie, Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter, dies aged 79
CHRISTINE McVie, who played with Fleetwood Mac and wrote some of their most famous songs, has died aged 79, her family has said.
The British singer-songwriter was behind hits including Little Lies, Everywhere, Don’t Stop, Say You Love Me and Songbird. She died peacefully at a hospital
in the company of her family, a statement said.
McVie left Fleetwood Mac after 28 years in 1998 but returned in 2014.
The family’s statement said “we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician
who was loved universally”.
Born Christine Perfect, McVie married Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie, and joined the group at the start of the 1970s.
Fleetwood Mac became one of the world’s best known rock bands in the 1970s and ‘80s.
Their 1977 album Rumours - inspired by the break-ups of the McVies and the band’s other
couple, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks - became one of the biggest selling of all time, with more than 40 million copies sold worldwide.
McVie was one of eight members of the band inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
In the same year, after the success of their live album The Dance, she retired to Kent, saying a fear of flying meant she was leaving the band.
But she rediscovered her love of performing at a one-off appearance with the group at London’s O2 arena in 2013 and returned to them a year later.
“It was amazing, like I’d never left. I climbed back on there again and there they were, the same old faces on stage,” she told the Guardian newspaper at the time.
In 2017 she told BBC Radio 4’s
Desert Island Discs programme that she had developed agoraphobia after leaving the band.
A statement by the band said of McVie: “We were so lucky to have a life with her.
“Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.”
In a post on Instagram, Stevie Nicks wrote: “A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away.
“I didn’t even know she was ill... until late Saturday night. I wanted to be in London, I wanted to get to London - but we were told to wait.
“So, since Saturday, one song has been swirling around my head, over and over and over. I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her, and so, I’m singing it to her now.
HARRY Styles’ introspectivebut-gossipy pop smash As It Was has been named the UK’s moststreamed song of 2022.
Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer all said the track was their top performer of the year, beating competition from Ed Sheeran, Drake and Taylor Swift.
It was also the biggest song globally on Spotify and Deezer, with Justin Bieber’s Stay topping Apple’s chart.
Styles has said the song is about “metamorphosis”, as he reflects on loneliness, growing up and moving on.
Spotify said As It Was had been streamed a total of 1.5 billion times this year.
That would have earned the star and his co-writers about £1.5m in royalties.
While Styles’ hit was uniformly loved across the three streaming services, there was a huge divergence further down the chart.
Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, which gained a new lease of life this year after being featured in Stranger Things, was the UK’s fourth most-streamed song on Spotify, for example, while being entirely absent from Apple’s Top 10.

Sharks4Kids programme expands conservation efforts
PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands, November 21, 2022—With the objective of strengthening ocean conservation, Sandals Foundation has collaborated with the marine educational organisation, Sharks4Kids, to engage nearly 2000 children in interactive learning sessions about sharks.
During a week-long visit to primary and secondary schools in Grand Turk, South Caicos, and Providenciales, the students learned about shark conservation, shark tagging, and science, as well as the lemon shark and other sharks found in the Turks and Caicos Islands' clear waters.
“As we continue to work towards sustainably managing and protecting our marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, it is more evident that environmental awareness is a crucial component of this process,” explained Georgia Scarlett, Environmental Coordinator at Sandals Foundation.
"Many people are unaware that sharks help to maintain delicately balanced ecosystems by influencing prey distribution and density," Scarlett added. "We saw how critical it was to assist in increasing environmental education about these species so that more people are aware, understand their role in enhancing biodiversity and
benefiting from healthy and productive oceans, and change their perceptions of these creatures."
Jillian Morris, the Founder of Sharks4Kids, expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of shark conservation and the significance that this programme that engages children in shark education will have on the achievement and maintenance of healthy seas and oceans.
“Kids are the future for our oceans and for sharks. We must empower and inspire them. By providing facts and hands-on learning opportunities, we are changing fear to fascination."
Through this partnership, Sandals Foundation and Sharks4Kids participated in the recently held Turks and Caicos International Film Festival, which continued its ever-present theme, 'Oceans and Environment'. This provided a larger platform for the continuation of enlightenment, empowerment, and inspiration amongst students, locals, and international guests. The teams took part in the Youth Day Expo, where students participated in mock shark tagging and a virtual reality shark dive. Beaches Resorts Turks and Caicos also contributed to this awareness chart by sponsoring the festival.

Alzheimer’s drug lecanemab hailed as momentous breakthrough
The first drug to slow the destruction of the brain in Alzheimer’s has been heralded as momentous.
The research breakthrough ends decades of failure and shows a new era of drugs to treat Alzheimer’sthe most common form of dementia - is possible.
Yet the medicine, lecanemab, has only a small effect and its impact on people’s daily lives is debated.
And the drug works in the early stages of the disease, so most would miss out without a revolution in spotting it.
Lecanemab attacks the sticky gunge - called beta amyloid - that builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s.
For a medical field littered with duds, despair and disappointment, some see these trial results as a triumphant turning point.
Alzheimer’s Research UK said the findings were “momentous”.
One of the world’s leading researchers behind the whole idea of targeting amyloid 30 years ago, Prof John Hardy, said it was “historic” and was optimistic “we’re seeing the beginning of Alzheimer’s therapies”. Prof Tara Spires-Jones, from the University of Edinburgh, said the results were “a big deal because we’ve had a 100% failure rate for a long time”.
Currently, people with Alzheimer’s are given other drugs to help manage their symptoms, but none change the course of the disease.
Lecanemab is an antibody - like those the body makes to attack viruses or bacteria - that has been engineered to tell the immune
system to clear amyloid from the brain.
Amyloid is a protein that clumps together in the spaces between neurons in the brain and forms distinctive plaques that are one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s.
The large-scale trial involved 1,795 volunteers with early stage Alzheimer’s. Infusions of lecanemab were given every fortnight.
The results, presented at the Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease conference in San Francisco and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, are not a miracle cure. The disease continued to rob people of their brain power, but that decline was slowed by around a quarter over the course of the 18 months of treatment.
The data is already being assessed by regulators in the US
who will soon decide whether lecanemab can be approved for wider use. The developers - the pharmaceutical companies Eisai and Biogen - plan to begin the approval process in other countries next year.
David Essam, who is 78 and from Kent in the UK, took part in the international trial.
His Alzheimer’s meant he had to give up work as a joiner - he could no longer remember how to build a cabinet or use his tools. He now uses a digital watch as he can’t tell time using a clock face.
“He’s not the man he was, he needs help with most things, his memory in general is almost nonexistent,” said his wife Cheryl. But she said the trial had given the family hope.
David said: “If somebody can slow it [Alzheimer’s] down and
eventually stop it all together that would be brilliant, it’s just a horrible nasty thing.”
There are more than 55 million people in the world like David and the numbers with Alzheimer’s disease are projected to exceed 139 million by 2050.
WILL IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
There is debate among scientists and doctors about the “real world” impact of lecanemab.
The slower decline with the drug was noticed using ratings of a person’s symptoms. It’s an 18-point scale, ranging from normal through to severe dementia. Those getting the drug were 0.45 points better off.
Prof Spires-Jones said that was a “small effect” on the disease, but “even though it is not dramatic, I would take it”.
Dr Susan Kohlhaas, from Alzheimer’s Research UK, said it was a “modest effect... but it gives us a little bit of a foothold” and the next generation of drugs would be better.
There are also risks. Brain scans showed a risk of brain bleeds (17% of participants) and brain swelling (13%). Overall, 7% of people given the drug had to stop because of side effects.
A crucial question is what happens after the 18 months of the trial, and the answers are still speculation.
Dr Elizabeth Coulthard, who treats patients at North Bristol NHS Trust, says that people have, on average, six years of living independently once mild cognitive impairment starts.
Slow that decline by a quarter and it could equate to an extra 19 months of independent life, “but we don’t know that yet”, she says.
It is even scientifically plausible that the effectiveness could be greater in longer trials. “I don’t think we can assume that this is it,” says Dr Kohlhass.
The emergence of drugs that do alter the course of the disease asks big questions of whether the health service is ready to use them.
The drugs have to be given early in the disease before too much damage to the brain is done, whereas most people referred to memory services are in the later stages of the disease.
That requires people coming forward at the earliest signs of memory problems and doctors being able to send them for amyloid tests - either brain scans or spinal fluid analysis - to a determine if they have Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. At the moment only 1-2% of people with dementia have such tests.
The Alzheimer’s Society says more than 850,000 people in the UK have some form of dementia. More than half have Alzheimer’s, but everyone would need testing.
“There’s an enormous gulf between current service provision and what we need to do, to deliver disease modifying therapies,” said Dr Coulthard.
She said that, currently, only those living near big medical centres or paying privately were likely to benefit.
Scientists also stressed that amyloid was only one part of the complex picture of Alzheimer’s disease and should not become the sole focus of therapies.
The immune system and inflammation are heavily involved in the disease and another toxic protein called tau is the one that’s found where brain cells are actually dying.
“That’s where I would put my money,” said Prof Spires-Jones.
She added: “I’m very excited we’re on the cusp of understanding enough to get a hold of the problem and we should have something that will make a bigger difference in a decade or so.”
Kate Lee, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Society charity, called for a 10-year government strategy on dementia to deal with what she called the “biggest health crisis we face in the UK”.
Speaking to Radio 4’s Today programme, she also said Lecanemab would not have a “huge impact” on those who already live with dementia.
But she added it should “make a big difference” for future generations. (BBC)

Somalia meteorite: Joy as scientists find two new minerals
A HUGE meteorite that fell to Earth contains two minerals never seen before on our planet, scientists say.
Canadian researchers said the rock was found in rural Somalia two years ago, but locals believe it is much older.
They call the stone Nightfall, and say it is documented in poems, songs and dances that stretch back five generations. It is used today to sharpen knives.
The official names for the new minerals are elaliite and elkinstantonite.
They were identified by scientists at the University of Alberta who looked at a 70g fragment from the 15-tonne meteorite, which is said
to be the ninth-biggest to reach our planet and is about 90% iron and nickel.
The name “elaliite” honours the fact that the meteorite was unearthed in the district of El Ali in Somalia, and “elkinstantonite” is named after Nasa expert Lindy Elkins-Tanton.
“Lindy has done a lot of work on how the cores of planets form, how these iron nickel cores form, and the closest analogue we have are iron meteorites. So it made sense to name a mineral after her and recognise her contributions to science,” said Prof Chris Herd who curates the University of Alberta’s meteorite collection.
A slice of the El Ali meteorite, now housed in the University of Alberta’s meteorite collection
A third, as-yet unidentified mineral, is being analysed by the university’s researchers who now hope to get their hands on more of the meteorite - not only to see
what else they might discover, but also how it could be used on Earth.
“Whenever there’s a new material that’s known, material
scientists are interested too because of the potential uses in a wide range of things in society,” Prof Herd said of the “exciting” research. (BBC)
Bats use the same techniques as death metal singers to vocalise, study finds
DEATH metal fans might just have a new animal mascot.
Some bats use the same vocal structures as death metal singers to make their unique vocalisations, a new study has found.
Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark investigated the noise-making techniques of Daubenton’s bat, a small species of the winged mammal found across Europe and Asia. The study, published Tuesday in the journal PLOS Biology, focuses on the different structures of the larynx — also known as the voice box — that bats use to expand their vocal range.
Vocal communication is essential for bats: They famously use sound to navigate their surroundings and locate their prey in a process known as echolocation. The flying critters also use sounds to communicate socially.
And bats that use echolocation have an impressive, seven-octave vocal range to match their sound needs, the researchers said. By comparison, most mammals, including humans, have a vocal range of three to four octaves. Bats use extremely high-pitched sounds to echolocate, but employ lowpitched growls to communicate with each other.
The scientists set out to understand exactly how
Daubenton’s bats maximize their vocal range.
The research team extracted the larynxes of five bats who had been euthanized and filmed the organs while applying air flow to mimic natural breathing. This allowed the scientists to directly observe the vocal membranes and ventricular folds, also called “false vocal folds,” vibrating at different frequencies. These are “the first direct observations” of these vocal structures in Daubenton’s bats, the researchers said.
“We identified for the first
time what physical structures within the larynx oscillate to make their different vocalisations. For example, bats can make low frequency calls, using their so called ‘false vocal folds’ — like human death metal singers do,” said Coen Elemans, the lead study author and a professor of biology at the University of Southern Denmark, in a news release.
Ventricular folds, or false vocal folds, are located on top of the true vocal cords. Historically, these folds were thought to have no role in normal human speech — hence
the term “false.”
LOW-FREQUENCY GROWLS
But studies have revealed that these folds are crucial for a few unique forms of vocalisation, like the distinctive “growling” death metal singers use or the throat singing from vocalists in Mongolia and Siberia.
The folds are likely also the source of bats’ low-frequency growls, the researchers found. They didn’t directly observe the vocal cords vibrating or oscillating.
However, the researchers wrote, “We venture to speculate that in bats, the ventricular folds have taken on the role of lower frequency vibrations.”
Scientists still don’t know what exactly the bats are communicating when they use their death metal growls. “Some seem aggressive, some may be an expression of annoyance, and some may have a very different function,” said study coauthor and University of Southern Denmark biologist Lasse Jakobsen in the news release.
Brock Fenton, professor emeritus of biology at Western University in London, Ontario, told CNN that the study is an interesting first step into understanding bat vocalisation. But there are over 1,400 known species of bats in the world — so a study focusing on just one species is limited in its application. He was not involved in the study.
“For vocal cords, this is interesting and new,” he said, but “there is a huge diversity of larynges in bats, that has hardly been described (in the paper).”
Fenton especially called for future research on bats that make long sounds, in contrast to the Daubenton’s bat’s high-pitched but short-length calls, saying that was necessary context to understand the breadth of bat vocalisations. (CNN)

Big UK trial to find best drugs to fight flu
With flu cases rising, UK Covid scientists are turning their attention to finding the best life-saving drugs to fight the winter virus.
A trial will run across 150 hospitals this year and next, recruiting thousands of patients.
Flu vaccines help prevent infection but each year some people become very sick.
And antiviral tablets - given within a couple of days of symptoms developing - are designed to reduce the severity of these bad infections.
One of the pills the Imperial College London team will be testing is oseltamivir, or Tamiflu, which the government has been criticised for stockpiling and spending hundreds of millions of pounds on when there were concerns about swine flu.
It is recommended to treat severe flu - but whether it saves
lives is unclear.
Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, the Randomised, Embedded, Multifactorial, Adaptive Platform Trial for Community-Acquired Pneumonia (Remap-Cap) will study how good the treatments are at reducing deaths and intensive care admissions.
The ineffective will be dropped and new ones added.
WINTER PRESSURES
Chief investigator Prof Anthony Gordon told BBC News: “We want to learn at pace what works, just like we did during Covid.
“We’ll test multiple treatments in different combinations. Some are antivirals that stop the virus, others are steroids or other treatments that work on how the body responds to infections.
“We hope that our trial will help to
Flu vaccines help prevent infection but each year some people become very sick.
find urgently needed flu treatments rapidly. Our Covid trial changed clinical practice globally and we hope we can impact flu treatment and reduce winter pressures on the NHS in the same way.”
Minister for Health and
Secondary Care Will Quince said: “This innovative trial will use the lessons we learned from Covid and deliver treatments to reduce serious illness in patients with flu, ease pressure on the NHS and ultimately save lives.
“While this trial aims to prevent illnesses for future flu seasons, we are now seeing increased levels of flu this year and it is vital that all those eligible for a free vaccine come forward as soon as possible.” (BBC)
Monkeypox given new name by global health experts
Monkeypox will now be known as mpox, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced, after complaints over racist and stigmatising language linked to the virus’s name.
The old term will be used alongside the new one for a year, before being phased out.
Mpox was decided on after lengthy discussions between experts, countries and the general public.
It can easily be used in English as well as other languages, the WHO said.
Human monkeypox was first identified in 1970 and named after the disease caused by the virus was discovered in captive monkeys more than a decade before.
Since then, the WHO has introduced advice on naming diseases.
It stresses the need to minimise unnecessary negative impact on trade, travel, tourism or animal welfare, and to avoid causing offence to any cultural, social, national or ethnic groups.
During the Covid pandemic, it recommended that variants were referred to using letters of the Greek
alphabet because they were “nonstigmatising” and easy to pronounce.
This year, there has been unusual spread of mpox virus - a member of the same family of viruses as smallpox - in many countries outside central and west Africa, where it is often found.
In July, the WHO declared a global health emergency because of the worldwide surge in people developing symptoms, including a high fever and skin lesions or rash.
Cases of the disease have been declining for several months now, but more than 100 different countries have been affected in 2022 - prompting huge demand for vaccine supplies to protect those most at risk.
The US, Brazil, Spain, France and the UK have reported the highest total number of mpox cases this year. Globally, there have been 50 deaths from the virus.
Since May, the UK has reported more than 3,500 cases but a rollout of vaccines to vulnerable groups helped drive down numbers following a peak in July.
Most people affected were men who have sex with men. (BBC)
Tour de France: 2024 race to finish in Nice instead of Paris
THE Tour de France will finish outside of the Paris region for the first time in its 121-year history when the 2024 edition concludes in Nice.
The final stage of the Grand Tour has traditionally finished on the Champs-Elysees in the French capital.
But because of the Olympics starting days later in Paris, the 110th edition of the race will end with a time trial.
It will return to Paris in 2025, 50 years after the first finish on the Champs-Elysees.
“Nice is a city that shines, it’s known around the world,” Tour director Christian Prudhomme said.
“There is the beauty of the setting and the mountains nearby. The city offers an exceptional setting and a great course.”
Nice hosted the Grand Depart in 1981 and 2020 and is familiar territory for cycling’s elite as it has hosted the finish of the Paris-Niceone of the most iconic races in the sport - since 1933.
The Tour has not concluded with a time trial since 1989.
The final stage has usually been ceremonial, with the leader not challenged, but that will change in 2024 when the time trial means the race could be undecided until the last moment.
The 2023 edition of the Tour, taking place from 1 to 23 July, will finish in Paris as usual.
The first edition of the Tour, in 1903, finished in Ville d’Avray, a suburb of western Paris. The next two Tours also finished in the surrounding Paris area but the winners were celebrated at the Parc des Princes. (BBC)
Pelé’s daughter calms fears over Brazilian football star’s hospitalisation
BRAZILIAN football legend Pelé has been hospitalised to receive treatment for an ongoing medical condition, his daughter Kely Nascimento said on Instagram.
She captioned the post after reports emerged that Pelé’s health deteriorated, saying, “Hello Friends. The media is freaking out again and I want to calm down the rumors here. My dad is hospitalised, he’s receiving treatment. I’m not rushing to a flight to get there.”
She went on to say, “My siblings are in Brazil and I’m going there for New Year’s. This is not a surprise nor an emergency. We thank all the kindness and love you
all send to us!!”
Pelé has been hospitalised at Albert Einstein Hospital in central São Paulo, according to CNN affiliate CNN Brasil.
The Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital confirmed in a statement that Pelé was taken there for a “reevaluation of the chemotherapy treatment over the colon cancer identified in September 2021” and that he is in “stable clinical condition.”
“After medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a regular ward, with no need for a semi-emergency unit or an ICU.

Davis Cup: Canada win title for first time with victory over Australia
Canada won the Davis Cup for the first time by beating Australia in the final in Malaga.
In the opening singles rubber, Denis Shapovalov made up for his defeat in the semi-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win over Thanasi Kokkinakis.
His Canada team-mate Felix Auger-Aliassime, the world number six, then beat Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 to give his country an unassailable 2-0 lead.
“The emotions are tough to describe,” said Auger-Aliassime.
“All of us here - we’ve dreamed of this moment. It’s really a dream come true.”
Canada were appearing in only their second Davis Cup final.
Their first, in 2019, brought defeat by Rafael Nadal’s Spain but they got their hands on the World Cup of tennis on Sunday - 109 years after they first played the tournament - at the expense of 28time champions Australia.
Shapovalov, ranked 18th in the world, raced into a 4-0 lead against Kokkinakis before the Australian got a game on the board.
But after wrapping up the first set comfortably, Shapovalov broke early in the second to put his country on course for a historic win.
Auger-Aliassime faced a tougher challenge in world number 24 De Minaur and was forced to fend off three early break points in their singles rubber.
He finally got a break himself in the eighth game, and after sealing the first set with an ace, he defended two further break points before going on to clinch the title for Canada.
“We all developed as players individually; we got better and better over the years,” AugerAliassime added.
“We’re more ready for these type of moments but it’s never easy to pull through.” (BBC)
Pelé has been hospitalized at Albert Einstein Hospital in central São Paulo
control of his living functions and stable clinical condition,” read the statement.
In December 2021, Pelé was hospitalised and underwent chemotherapy treatment. In
September of that year, he underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his right colon, which doctors found during routine examinations.
Pelé is widely considered to be one of the greatest soccer players
in history. He played in four World Cups, winning three (1958, 1962, 1970) and scoring 12 goals in 14 games. He scored 1,281 goals in his professional career in 1,363 games. (CNN)
US Women’s team earns more money from men’s World Cup than previous tournaments
THE United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) earned more money from its male equivalent reaching the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar than it did from winning its own tournaments in 2015 and 2019.
As a result of the equal pay agreement forged earlier this year between the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the United States Women’s National Team Players Association (USWNTPA) and the United States National Soccer Team Players Association (USNSTPA), the men and women’s teams split all World Cup earnings.
Under the landmark agreement, US Soccer became “the first Federation in the world to equalise FIFA World Cup prize money” awarded to the teams for participating in World Cups.
“This is a truly historic moment,” US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement in May.
“These agreements have changed the game forever here in the United States and have the potential to change the game around the world.”
FIFA’s website details the prize fund for this men’s 2022 tournament, stating that teams who finish between ninth and 16th – i.e. those who are defeated in the first round of the knockout stages – earn $13 million per team.
That means the USWNT will earn $6.5 million for the US Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) exploits thus far in Qatar. If the team defeats the Netherlands in the round of 16 and reaches the quarterfinals or beyond, that figure will continue to increase.
In contrast, the USWNT earned $6 million in total for its successive World Cup wins in 2015 and 2019 – $2 million in 2015 and $4 million in 2019.
The 2019 Women’s World Cup total prize money was $30 million,
The USWNT is set to reap the rewards for the US men’s team’s run at Qatar 2022
doubled from the $15 million in 2015.
The US jcocer equal pay agreement means the USMNT will pick up half of the USWNT’s prize money in the future.
Meanwhile, at the men’s World Cup this year, the winner of the tournament will get $42 million and the total prize money is $440 million – over 14 times as much as the women’s edition of the tournament.
“FIFA has always treated the women’s World Cup as an afterthought, which is a big reason
why equal-pay deals like the one struck between the USMNT and USWNT are so important,” wrote sports reporter Lindsay Gibbs in her newsletter “PowerPlays.”
“They put more pressure on FIFA to invest in the women’s game, because now the lack of resources given to the women directly impact the men, too. Solidarity truly does matter.”
She added: “It’s beyond time for FIFA to step up and treat women’s soccer like the money-maker we know it can be. Until then, we’ll celebrate the wins along the way, like finally achieving true pay equality in U.S. Soccer.”

SPANISH IndyCar driver Alex
Palou will be one of McLaren’s Formula 1 reserve drivers in 2023.
The 25-year-old will be McLaren’s reserve at all grands prix that do not clash with his commitments in IndyCar, where Palou races for the Ganassi team.
Palou, who won the 2021 IndyCar title, this year drove for McLaren in practice at the US Grand Prix and in two private tests.
McLaren have not said who will fill the role at other times.
In 2022, the team had access to a
total of four reserve drivers.
Palou said he was “excited” about his new position and was looking forward to continuing his development as a driver.
Team principal Andreas Seidl said: “Alex impressed with his first practice session in Austin and his driver development tests this year.
“He has many notable motorsports achievements so far, particularly the 2021 IndyCar championship title, so it’s brilliant to be able to expand his role in the team and we look
forward to working more closely with him.”
Earlier this year, Palou was involved in a contract dispute between McLaren and Ganassi in IndyCar, when both teams said he was under contract to them for the 2023 season.
After legal threats, and Ganassi filing a lawsuit against Palou, an agreement was reached between the parties that he would continue with Ganassi in IndyCar next season while being allowed to test for McLaren.
Verdasco accepts two month ban for failing to renew ADHD medication
FORMER world number seven Fernando Verdasco has accepted a two month ban from the International Tennis Integrity Agency for breaching anti-doping rules.
The Spaniard, 39, tested positive for methylphenidate at an ATP Challenger event in February.
The world number 125 had forgotten to renew his Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) for the medication, which is used to treat ADHD.
The ITIA said it “accepts that the player did not intend to cheat”.
A TUE is an official medical
document giving an athlete permission to take a medication that is ordinarily prohibited but for the treatment of a legitimate condition.
The ITIA added in a statement: “His violation was inadvertent and unintentional, and he bears no significant fault or negligence for it.”
Verdasco’s ban was reduced from two years to two months to reflect his degree of fault, meaning he will be able to resume playing in January.
He has been granted a new TUE for the medication. (BBC)
Formula 1: Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto to leave at end of year
MATTIA Binotto is to leave his position as Ferrari team principal at the end of the year.
A statement from Ferrari on Tuesday said the 53-year-old had resigned from his role and that the process to identify a replacement was “underway”.
Binotto, who has been with Ferrari since 1995, said: “With the regret that this entails, I have decided to conclude my collaboration with Ferrari.
“It is right to take this step, as hard as this decision has been for me.”
Binotto worked his way up through the company to first head the engine department, then be technical director of the entire F1 team and finally to lead it.
He leaves at the end of a season in which Ferrari achieved their goals of returning to winning races, but which was marked by
a series of reliability failures and operational errors.
Binotto said: “I am leaving a company that I love, which I have been part of for 28 years, with the serenity that comes from the conviction that I have made every effort to achieve the objectives set.
“I leave a united and growing team. A strong team, ready, I’m sure, to achieve the highest goals, to which I wish all the best for the future.”
Ferrari chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna thanked Binotto and wished him well, adding that his work meant the team were “in a strong position to renew our challenge, above all for our amazing fans around the world, to win the ultimate prize in motorsport”.
Alfa Romeo team principal Frederic Vasseur has been tipped as Binotto’s replacement. (BBC)

Bruno, St Ange lead Police to cricket win
Garvin Bruno and Damian St Ange found form with half-centuries to lead Police to a 37-run victory against Vibes when action in the Turks and Caicos Islands Cricket Association (TCICA) T-20 Cricket Competition continued on Sunday last at the Downtown Ball Park.
Vibes won the toss and opted to field, but they did not anticipate that Bruno would find form.
Bruno took just 54 balls to race to 97 after blistering the boundary with 15 fours and five sixes.
During the middle part of his innings, he was pegged back, due mostly to the bowling of Ajay Vyas.
He and St Ange, who was also dominant with the willow, managed to bat their team to a very comfortable position with a 76-run third-wicket partnership before Bruno became the second victim of fast bowler Ian Heath.
St Ange continued to push the score, but along with boundaries, he also ran the wicket well, picking up the singles and doubles with the fielders on the boundary rope.
In the end, he finished not out on 69 (9X4s, 2X6s) from 37 balls as he lifted the Lawmen to 202-3 from their allotted overs.
Heath finished with 2-52 from his four overs, while Vyas ended with 1-18 from his four overs.
Needing to score at over 10 runs per over, Vibes lost wickets at regular intervals, before G. Campbell started to play some shots. He and Ricardo Brown put together a game-high 89-run fifth wicket partnership, but none could match the firepower of Bruno or St Ange and the side could only muster 166-5 before the overs ended.
Campbell finished with 62 (9x4s, 2X6s) from 46 balls, while
Brown finished with 35 (4X4s, 1X6) from 26 balls.
Police used six bowlers, including Bruno and St Ange, but it was Lyndon Tyson, who led the charge with 3-22 from three overs.
fourth Golden Boot award
Fenelus told the Weekly News.
He added that the team knew “it was mission impossible”, but as defending champions, they believed in themselves.
“We had to win all the remaining six games to win the championship and with God’s grace and the hard work of everyone, we won all of them to win the Championship.”
During those last six games, Fenelus registered six goals and made five assists.
“Credit to all the players, the staff and thanks to the fans for their support. This one is special…”
He said that this season “has been the hardest, most challenging. There were times things didn’t work out, we doubted ourselves, even gave up at some point but God was always in control”.
For his dominance in the scoring department, which included 19 goals, he again finished with the Golden Boot award.
St Ange and Haiden Spring finished with a wicket each in support.
With both Bruno and St Ange finding form, the Lawmen will be the team to beat.
They play Vibes again this
weekend in the semi-finals, while Beaches, the early season favourites tackle the Jaguars.
The winners of the two clashes will meet on December 11 in the final.
