FortisTCI proposes 6% electricity rate hike

– Energy and Utilities Department to review proposal

FortisTCI, the sole electricity provider for the Turks and Caicos Islands, has proposed a 6% increase in electricity rates, effective April 1, 2024.

The government of the Turks and Caicos Islands is currently reviewing the proposal.

The Energy and Utilities Department has been analysing the information provided by FortisTCI over the past three weeks and is seeking further details that may aid in the justification of the increase.

According to the government, FortisTCI made its application on February 14, 2024, and the government must complete its review and provide a response to the proposal by March 30, 2024.

The new Minister for Public Safety and Utilities, Hon Kyle Knowles, stated that the government will “continue to exercise due diligence in its examination of the case put forward by FortisTCI, but

the timeframe is very tight”.

He also noted that the 1987 agreement on rate-setting does not give the government the authority to require studies, provide expert opinions, or test evidence.

“This government will soon begin consultations on a policy to increase regulatory oversight of utilities in these Islands.

“Within the confines of the present process, he explained, “the government will continue to press the utility for as much information and justifications as it can before the deadline”.

According to the Minister, under the limited review process allowed by an agreement made in 1987, the government has only six weeks to complete its review before providing a full response.

In the case that the application is denied, the same agreement allows FortisTCI to appeal the decision by referring it to a governmentappointed independent enquirer.

received, the Energy and Utilities Department will make a submission to the government.

A decision will then be made, and a notification sent to FortisTCI and made public on or before March 31, 2024.

The last rate increase application was made in 2018 when FortisTCI proposed an increase in electricity rates to the Turks and Caicos Islands government following the devastating hurricanes Irma and

Maria in 2017.

The request was for an increase to the tariff rates to recoup losses sustained and to cover the costs of rebuilding and recovery efforts.

However, the rate increase was denied by the governor, who cited a lack of sufficient information and assessments regarding the efficiency of investments and the real costs of providing electricity services in the islands.

FortisTCI then requested a

commission of inquiry to examine the reasonableness of their rate variation application, which was granted by the governor.

The commission ultimately found that the rate increase was justified and recommended that it be approved.

However, the increase did not take effect until 2020, when the courts rejected a government decision to deny the findings of the independent commission.

Judge rules in favour of same-sex couple – Constitutional right to work upheld, irrespective of sexual orientation

The Supreme Court has handed down a landmark judgment, granting Timothy Haymon – who is married to Richard Sankar - the right to work in the TCI under the Constitution as awarded to any married couple.

Justice Anthony Gruchot handed down the written judgment this past Tuesday, March 12, having heard the case since November 2022.

In his judgment, Justice Gruchot stated: “I express my gratitude to the parties for their patience in awaiting this decision. This is a sensitive subject and I have been presented with weighty authorities to which I have given careful consideration.”

Haymon and Sankar were the plaintiffs in the matter, seeking several declarations – related to same-sex marriage in the Islands, the right to work and fundamental rights under the Turks and Caicos Islands Constitution. Representing the couple were Tim Prudhoe and Yuri Saunders.

Appearing for the respondents in the matter - former Director of Immigration, Derek Been and the Attorney General – were Ivan Hare KC and Clemar Hippolyte.

In essence, the details of the case are that Sankar – a citizen of the TCI as of May 19, 2021 - married

his partner on November 2, 2020, in Florida. On August 16, 2021, Haymon – who was already in possession of a homeowner permit - applied for a residence permit as per the Immigration Ordinance reflecting his spousal relationship to Sankar.

On October 1, 2021, the director of immigration refused the application.

The couple then sought relief through the court, filing their application under section 21 of the Constitution which provides for the enforcement of the fundamental rights and freedoms of an individual protected under Part 1 of the Constitution.

In his judgment, Gruchot wrote: “The limiting of the grant of a spousal resident permit to only heterosexual couples in my view is discriminatory but not on the basis of marriage.

“It fails to grant equal rights to homosexual couples who are in a permanent and committed relationship.”

The judge said in his view, there is no doubt that the refusal to grant

Haymon the equivalent right to a residence permit as a heterosexual spouse (whether or not they were married in the TCI) offends the protection afforded by section 16 of the Constitution, given the expressed protection afforded on the basis of sexual orientation.

He added: “Accordingly, in my judgment, the plaintiffs are entitled to the declaration they seek, that the refusal to grant a residence permit to Haymon based on the definition of a spouse is in contravention of the protected rights in sections 9 and 16 of the Constitution.”

However, the judge did uphold that a denial of a right for samesex couples to marry in the TCI “is not discriminatory and that such a right is inescapably tied to the recognition of an overseas samesex marriage”.

As such, he refused the order sought by the plaintiffs, which is outlined in the application as: “An amendment to the Marriage Ordinance which would include in the definition of ‘spouse’ (or such other description) same-sex couples or something equivalent.”

UK increases support for TCI following Haiti’s turmoil

The United Kingdom Government has agreed to provide an additional marine patrol craft to the TCI and a wide range of policing equipment to support the RTCIPF in combating serious crime in the wake of Haiti’s unrest.

The TCI is a British Overseas Territory located less than 200 miles from the coast of Haiti. Together with the local government, the UK has a responsibility for the safety and security of its people.

In response to the ongoing unrest in Haiti, the United Kingdom’s government has announced a range of measures to support the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).

Along with the craft and policing equipment, the UK will send support for border security upgrades, including drone surveillance, portable scanners, and new engines for Department of Environment and Coastal Resources vessels.

Additionally, the UK will provide a package of support to the territory, including new capabilities on forensics, body-worn cameras and CCTV.

This support is intended to help the TCI address the security challenges it faces and to improve its ability to respond to future crises.

The United Kingdom and the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) governments released a joint statement on March 13, 2024, expressing their concern about the security situation in Haiti and its potential impact on the Turks and Caicos Islands and the wider Caribbean region.

FCDO Minister for Americas, Caribbean and Overseas Territories, David Rutley MP said the United Kingdom stands by the people of the TCI in response to this challenge, as well as drug trafficking and gun crime affecting the region.

Echoing similar sentiments, Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the safety and security of people in the Turks and Caicos Islands “is vital following the terrible escalation of violence we have seen in Haiti”.

“In addition to our existing support, these measures will help the brave officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force to tackle the threat of illegal migration and gang violence.

“In this fast-moving situation, the UK continues to support regional efforts to restore stability and security for the people of Haiti”, Cameron said.

In response to a request from

the territory’s Governor, HE Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam last month, the UK dispatched firearms officers and additional officers to complement those it had already deployed to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) Serious Crime Squad.

A reconnaissance team from the UK Ministry of Defence, Home Office and UK Border Force has been urgently dispatched this week to assess what further support the TCI requires in addressing threats to national security following the deteriorating situation of Haiti.

Misick, Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam, Minister for Immigration and Border Services, Arlington Musgrove and the Minister of the Overseas Territories, David Rutley MP, the FCDO have agreed to source an additional marine patrol craft for the TCI.

“The UK will provide a comprehensive new package of support to upgrade the TCI’s maritime domain awareness with advanced coastal sensors through the support of the UK’s Joint Maritime Security Centre”, the Joint statement read.

Haiti has been in a state of civil unrest since February 7, 2019, when thousands of people took

to the streets of Port-au-Prince to demand the resignation of thenPresident Jovenel Moise.

The country has been without a functioning government since the assassination of President Moise in July 2021.

The demonstrations have since spread to other parts of the country, and have led to several deaths, injuries, and property damage, and jailbreaks.

The unrest is fuelled by anger over widespread corruption, mismanagement, and poverty in Haiti.

The United Nations has warned that Haiti is on the brink of a major humanitarian crisis.

Henry barred from entering TCI

Ariel Henry, who, this week, agreed to resign as Prime Minister of Haiti has been placed on the Turks and Caicos Stop List.

Sources say the TCI was a potential exile destination for the embattled politician.

Henry, the country’s prime minister since July 2021, was appointed by former President Jovenel Moise just two days before the latter’s assassination.

Since then, he had managed to retain caretaker power, despite the country’s deterioration, the rise in gangs, lawlessness, and violence.

When he exited Haiti late last month to attend CARICOM’s Heads of Government meeting in Guyana, and to meet with Kenya’s government for bootson-the-ground support, Haiti imploded.

Since then, Henry has been barred from re-entering the country.

CARICOM officials were trying to convince Henry not to return home after death threats were made on his life. But he insisted and was adamant about returning to Haiti when he boarded a plane from the US to Port au Prince. Gangs however ensured that his plane could not land when they attempted to seize control of the airport.

He was then forced to land in Puerto Rico after the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola, declined his request to land there.

Sources stated that Henry is seeking asylum to the TCI (this could not be confirmed), while others said they feel he intends to make his way from the Islands by boat to Haiti if given a chance to

a “bloody revolution”, the TCI decided not to get involved and on Wednesday placed Henry on the stop list.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS’ SICK-OUT

Air traffic controllers in the Turks and Caicos Islands staged a sick-out on Friday, March 1, 2024, causing flight delays and disruptions for hundreds of passengers. The action was in protest of low pay and poor working conditions. The controllers demanded a 50-70% pay increase, as well as improvements to their working conditions. Since then, several air traffic controllers who participated in the sick-out, have been terminated and the TCIAA is moving at breakneck speed to recruit new and former employees to fill the vacancies created as a consequence of the industrial action, as part of its efforts to ensure that adequate staffing levels are restored as soon as possible.

The disgruntled workers who direct aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace reported sick and refused to work two Fridays ago, to demand the attention of authorities to issues affecting them in the workplace. Poor working conditions, low pay in comparison to regional standards, and outdated equipment were some of the grievances highlighted by air traffic workers but the industrial action disrupted travel plans for hundreds of passengers coming and leaving the destination. What are your thoughts?

Middle ground

The government should have been proactive in ensuring reasonably good working conditions. While the percentage of raise is a significant markup, there should have been some dialogue to see how best to appease both sides.

It is not a good reflection when employees have to take such steps to bring matters to full attention. As for firing staff, one must always take into consideration what is in their contract before signing and what may be gained or loss by their actions.

Immaturity

Given the importance of service by air to this country, this supposed “sick-out” indicates a tremendous degree of immaturity on both sides of the negotiating table.

and remember we have also suffered similar service disruptions when local taxi drivers blocked access to the airport because of some squabble with the government about their fare schedule.

Kindergarten mentality

Surely the government, TCIAA, or whichever body represents the employers in this matter has been made aware of the deteriorating situation with the air traffic controllers for quite some time and appears not to have shown the employees any sign of good faith in negotiation of their grievances.

At the same time, the air traffic controllers have had plenty of time to make their employers and the general public aware of their concerns and announce some sort of deadline for the withholding of their services. A realistic degree of transparency should be mandatory for any labour disputes arising with any “essential services”.

There MUST be some mechanism put in place so that our airport cannot be used as a “choke point” whenever air traffic controllers, airport firefighters or immigration officers have a dispute concerning wages or working conditions –

This critical aspect of our economy can no longer be left in the hands of the “kindergarten class” to manage – time to grow up, kids, and demonstrate a degree of maturity that should be commensurate with these positions!

Power drunk

It really begs the question, which country is Hon Washington Misick premier of? He really sounds like someone who is reckless, and irresponsible and is out to destroy the careers and lives of the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

He is coming off as a dictator who has lost his mind. How dare Washy say to TCIslanders, that he is going to replace them all because they are seeking to assert their rights! If he can take a ginormous annual salary and food compensation package for himself, why can’t he accede to the demands of the workers, some of whom are earning less than $2000 per month and are subject to horrendous working conditions?

In fact, no public worker should be making less than $3000 per month when the Premier takes home such a large salary. You would find this kind of premier in thirdworld African and Caribbean countries where there is “no rule of law or active civil society”.

He must be drunk with power and the autocracy, the British, are allowing him to throw around while he is doing the bidding of His Grace Bay masters.

Under the TCI Employment Law, while people are seeking rights, trying to have deplorable conditions improved, i.e. industrial action, they should not be dismissed. Yet, he fired them. On the campaign trail, Washy and his PNP minions would be saying they are there to fight for

Breaking Ground: TCI could lead in regional communication standards

The PR, marketing, and communications sector is poised for potential growth and could lead the Caribbean region in terms of industry standards says Damian Wilson.

Wilson’s suggestion comes after the release of a new research report into the current trends and future direction of the sector as a possible emerging industry in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).

Wilson, an 18-year PR, media and communications professional and the current Deputy Director of Radio Turks and Caicos is the author of the report which conveys the findings of the research that he initiated.

“One of the key research results is the considerable optimism by industry practitioners and government alike, with persons

seeing growth potential. I believe that we can become regional leaders in this field. I believe that one of the initiatives that could be used to do this is by establishing a ‘TCI Centre of Communications Excellence’ within the TCI Community College. Such an institute would be dedicated to communication and media innovation with a particular focus on digital communications and ICT,” Wilson said in a statement on Thursday, March 11, 2024.

He further explained, “I believe that the PR, marketing, and communications sector, like much of the country, is at a crossroads and could have an even greater impact on our socio-economic fabric.

“Some may have concerns about our small size, but I believe this makes us far more agile than our

Breaches of the law

There is a basic right to assemble, agitate, argue, demand and engage in any form of peaceful tactic by workers to seek better pay and conditions. This is called industrial activity and it’s a right enshrined in law and protected by the Constitution. Ministers and MPs are elected to fight for and to protect those rights. In fact, the TCI’s Employment Ordinance provides that when one is engaging in industrial activity and fighting for one’s rights there cannot be a ground for dismissal. The Premier and his ministers do not care about these rights and the need for them to be upheld.

They need to resign en masse and forthwith. Election time and every four years, these 14 MPs will go around making false and empty promises about fighting and empowering Turks and Caicos Islanders.

TCI people feel that ministers are there for their empowerment, but they are routinely let down by their governments. The threat by the Premier and his 14 MPs, none of which have come out and condemned it, to replace them with workers from the outside of the TCI is treacherous and dangerous.

It means that the TCI worker has no job security in his/her own country. Last election, in the run-up to it, under

neighbours. All in all, any potential growth must be underpinned by new investments, professional development, and a strategy to integrate the sector into the broader economy.”

Wilson also said that he sees his research as a first step in understanding our industry sectors in the TCI and would love to see more profound research and analysis conducted.

He’s hoping that the report will spark discussion along those lines.

the Premiership of Sharlene Cartwright Robinson, there was similar industrial action, except that no one was fired. Premier Misick, some of his minions and candidates were all on the streets supporting the strike. They care little and nothing about the destination and quality of the tourism product. They demanded justice for the workers. Now in office, Premier Misick, instead of sticking to his promises on the street, can now be seen firing people and taking away their job security. He is breaching their employment ordinance rights.

Nip it in the bud

Many might not like the decision of the government to fire some of the workers and find replacements, but the airport is basically our most important gateway to our main earner, tourism.

Tourists are already turning a blind eye to crime just to visit the Beautiful by Nature TCI, don’t let the airport be the final straw that makes them choose another destination.

The government has been arrogant and egotistical in the past, but this seems to be the correct move this time.

Valuable assets

Realities and conditions on the ground require better and upgraded working conditions; and where the workers are subjected to horrible working conditions

there need to be improvements. It begs the question whether the Ministers or those 14 elected MPs and appointed members know or care about what’s happening at the airport.

Bad working conditions can lead to sickness, burnout and collapsing on the job. Could these so-called concerned officials know that should a worker faint or collapse on the job, because of these working conditions such an event could threaten the safety of flights landing? Would that pose a greater threat to the destination than worrying about a few backed-up flights on a given day or week?

The argument cited by the government that they were worried about the destination is none but a ruse. Their actions are ruthless, and dictatorial and display their true inner self and self-interested, selfish “so-called representatives of the people”.

Until the worker in the TCI wakes up and realise that campaign monies are but bribes, deadly poison, designed to elect people who do not care about them, this country and its situation will not improve.

A major crisis

The leader of the Opposition, the Hon Edwin Astwood condemned, without due process, the firing of the workers and demanded their reinstatement. The shoes are “on the other foot” and the 14 PNP MPs are now obliged to join this call, show “leadership” and condemn the actions of the Premier. They must also, like the Opposition, demand the reinstatement of the air-traffic controllers.

This condemnation was well suited because the country has invested years of training, monies, scholarships and funding to train these air traffic controllers. Millions over the years, the country’s monies, all gone to waste because ministers can do what they like without regard to the country’s finances. They gave their lives and careers. This requires the intervention of the labour department and the minister to fight for these workers.

Where is the minister in all of this? It also requires input and comment from the Office of the Attorney General and if these departments “do not do their jobs” the Office of the Ombudsman needs to intervene. Can the Premier and his ministers do what they like?

Can they just fire people just like that and invoke national security and safety reasons? Has TCI finally crossed the line and entered the state of a banana republic? Can ministers just fire people instead of representing them? If this is the case then, why seek more constitutional powers, if that is going to be the end product of vesting more powers in ministers?

It makes no sense of the cries for more powers to “do more for the people” but when the powers are given, the little they have, like Haiti, they go and abuse the powers. Trust and confidence are then all removed and the people of the TCI cannot trust them with more because they are abusing the little. This is indeed a crisis of moral and constitutional proportions. The way government and organs of government are running, seem compromised by the premier and his actions.

Police nabs suspected gang members and traffickers among 200 captured migrants

Law enforcement in the Turks and Caicos Islands have identified and apprehended several criminals from Haiti, some with links to gangs and others suspected to be involved in human trafficking.

With the ongoing unrest in Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands have increased its maritime surveillance and screening process to detect and disrupt criminal activities.

Over 200 irregular migrants were recently intercepted at sea on illegal vessels during two separate operations, lurking among them were suspected individuals with links to the criminal underworld trying to sneak into the Turks and Caicos Islands.

As authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands remain on increased alert as the escalating crisis poses a significant risk to TCI’s security, Acting Commissioner of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, Mr Christopher Eyre revealed the successful interceptions and rigorous screening process has led to the identification of the criminals.

In an update on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, the Acting Commissioner said: “We’ve identified at the outset that immigration crime, organised crime linked in with that and any gun crime issues associated with it and we have clear priorities for the group in the way that we gather information and target our resources”.

He said that the police force will look to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“A proactive policing activity has commenced in that space to deal with those top 10 targets.

“The immigration service have got detention facilities set up and then we screen any persons who were detained to identify those who may be at risk, and that has led us to be able to identify people who we believe are criminals from Haiti, and we have arrested them under the anti-gang legislation that we have for suspicion of

being involved in organised crime, to mitigate any risks that they present.”

He stressed that the screening process and the intelligence assessment of threats are just one of the elements being utilised to mitigate risks.

“We will both enforce the law against them and seek to do everything possible to deter and disrupt their criminal endeavours to make sure we keep our community safe”, the Acting Commissioner said in an audio update shared with the Weekly News.

INTELLIGENCE SHARING

The Acting Commissioner is the Chairman of a Strategic Coordinating Group (SCG) activated on Monday, March 4 to develop a comprehensive strategy to tackle threats relating to the crisis on land, air, and sea.

This includes the deployment of marine assets, the co-opting of air support, and additional land patrols.

Since its establishment, the group has been working with a number of regional and international partners from the United States, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and Haiti as part of its intelligence gathering and sharing process, in an effort to deter criminal activity and stem human trafficking to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Eyre said: “We have a number of different routes in gathering information from partner agencies and other countries, including speaking directly to partners in Haiti to understand the deterioration of the situation that people will have seen in the media over the last 24 hours.”

This includes the resignation of the Prime Minister, which he said was “another consequence that’s further destabilising the situation”.

The Acting Commissioner further explained that the Strategic Coordinating Group (SCG) assesses the intelligence gathered from Haiti and through

other networks and looks at the implications for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

“That’s the process that we manage on a daily basis through something we call a tasking and coordination system, which happens in a daily way for the police service.”

The SCG chair added that sensitive information is shared between agencies, not on a minuteby-minute basis, but certainly constantly throughout a 24-hour.

To further strengthen the territory’s border protection, the police force has deployed its Marine Units to sea.

He said: “So our vessels are pre-deployed at sea with officers working constantly, they work hand in glove with the fisheries and the agencies, farmers, the

United States, and came in to make sure that we are coordinating our efforts to intercept and deal with the vessels before they come to our shores.”

Over the last week, authorities intercepted two vessels with over 200 detainees heading towards the TCI.

Commissioner Eyre commended the dedication and commitment of all personnel involved both in dealing with the interception and those handling the processing on the ground.

He said: “Providing security for our marinas is exemplary and they are working hard to make sure that all assets are safe. He stressed that coastal patrolling remains relentless and is guided by the intelligence on potential threats.

“On land, we have groundbased elements of the Turks and Caicos regiment, the police and immigration teams were patrolling along the coastline, both to deter illegal migration but also to detect those who may have slipped through the maritime net, which unfortunately, is a reality but we work hard to limit that in every way we possibly can.”

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

TCI seeks maritime and aerial support from the UK, amid crisis in Haiti

Leaders of the Turks and Caicos Islands are working assiduously with the UK government to secure additional support to bolster the territory’s maritime interdiction and aerial surveillance capability amid the crisis in Haiti.

Neighbouring Haiti is on the brink of anarchy as chaos and violence escalated when Haiti’s powerful criminal gangs, which were already in control of large parts of the capital city, Port-auPrince, stormed the two largest prisons on March 3, resulting in more than 4000 inmates escaping, further exacerbating the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.

In response to the deteriorating situation, the Turks and Caicos Islands have strengthened its multi-national partnership with intelligence and security agencies across the region to shore up the territory’s defences against the gang-fuelled upheaval.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Government has since declared a National Emergency and activated a Strategic Coordinating Group (SCG) to coordinate its response to the volatile situation and its consequential impact on the security of the TCI.

To further strengthen these ongoing efforts, HE Governor Dileeni-Daniel Selvaratnam and Hon Premier Washington Misick are liaising with the United Kingdom, to secure additional support, according to a joint statement issued by the territory’s leaders.

In addressing this national emergency, the Governor and the Premier are bringing the critical focus of the required operational assistance from the UK Government “who are already engaged in the serious nature of what we face and the significance of the implications to the security, safety, and stability of the Turks and Caicos Islands”, the statement read.

The leaders are seeking support to enhance the territory’s maritime interdiction and aerial surveillance capability; bolster operational enforcement and landbased capability; and strengthen local authorities’ intelligence and operational planning.

In an audio update on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Acting Commissioner Christopher Eyre, said experts from the UK will travel to the TCI soon to determine the level of assistance needed.

He said: I’m aware that we are likely to be having experts from the UK arriving in the next few days to do assessments of what additional assistance may be provided. And we of course stand by ready to support their work when they arrive to make sure that we work hand in glove to maintain our commitment to keeping our community safe.”

Eyre said the immigration service is working extremely hard and is exploring alternative routes to repatriate people to Haiti.

“The situation in Haiti and the level of disruption there means that there are limitations on the number of flights that are able to go out, but the immigration service is highly professional.

“They are mapping and planning how they will deal

In his update, Eyre said the SCG has met regularly to ensure all is being done by enforcement agencies to protect communities and to maintain the integrity of TCI’s international borders to tackle illegal migration, coordinate the lawful interdiction and detention of illegal migrants; and ensure co-ordination across all public bodies to optimise the territory’s response to the National Security Situation.

Over the last seven days, the SCG has strengthened its multi-national

partnership with intelligence and security agencies across the region, which is allowing them to identify potential illegal movements and understand the threats and risks posed by the deteriorating situation in Haiti.

He explained that the SCG has enhanced its air surveillance partnerships to monitor the seas between the TCI and Haiti and developed a coordinated maritime intervention capability to track and intervene with vessels, wherever possible before they reach TCI shores.

This has involved maritime police officers being deployed at

sea to track and intervene with vessels at the earliest opportunity.

Interventions at sea have led to the detention of more than 200 migrants with others detained on shore within the last week.

The border force continues to process those arrested for return to Haiti as soon as the conditions allow.

The Governor and Premier commend the brave and diligent officers of all the agencies who have been deployed at sea, on land, and in the air for long periods and who have, with significant success, captured those they were charged to detain.

Joint Operations intercept 171 illegal migrants in TCI waters

Two vessels carrying a combined 171 illegal migrants in Turks and Caicos territorial waters, were intercepted through joint operations in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

As thousands of Haitians are fleeing their homeland due to several factors, including political instability, gang violence, and economic hardship, the TCI continues to grapple with an influx of illegal migrants, as conditions worsen in neighbouring Haiti.

Earlier this week, March 11, an illegal vessel transporting 140 irregular migrants was intercepted.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Specialist Tactical Operation) Mat Newton, the interception was made based on information from the United States Coast Guard which indicated that an illegal sloop was heading towards the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Newton said: “At 12:43 am today (March 11th, 2024), the Bahamas vessel HMBS Bahamas, with two members from the Turks and Caicos Regiment and one member

of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force onboard as ‘ship riders’, intercepted what is believed to be a Haitian vessel.

“The illegal sloop carried one hundred and twenty-one males (two minors included) and Nineteen Females (two minors included). The irregular migrants were brought ashore to Providenciales for processing by the immigration task force.

“The RTCIPF remains committed to working alongside our regional and international partners to dismantle these

The TCI-Bahamas Shiprider Agreement allows the TCI and Bahamian “ship riders” to board each other’s law enforcement vessels or aircraft. The ship rider can grant authority to enforce TCI law relating to people trafficking, illegal migration, narcotics or firearms trafficking, or unregulated fishing.

Prior to this interception, on March 8, 2024, another MultiAgency interception resulted in 31 irregular migrants being detained following an attempt to enter the Turks and Caicos Islands illegally.

The RTCIPF said around 11:50 a.m. officers of the RTCIPF Marine Branch, TCI Regiment, and the Fisheries Maritime Resource Management unit intercepted 22 males and nine females.

“While conducting patrols, the officers spotted and intercepted a 25ft Grey Go Fast vessel with two Yamaha engines outside Muddy Point, North Caicos.

The irregular migrants were handed over to the Immigration Task Force for processing.

“Their vigilance and dedication to upholding maritime laws have once again demonstrated the Royal

Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our borders.

“Illegal maritime entry poses significant threats to our communities.

“The interception of this vessel sends a clear message that we will not tolerate criminal behaviour on our seas.

“I want to thank the officers involved in this operation for their professionalism, courage, and determination in facing danger.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to identify, disrupt, and prosecute those involved in illegal maritime activities and those facilitating these acts. Through collaborative efforts with our law enforcement and marine agency partners, we will strive to safeguard our waters and protect the TCI’s interests.”

Newton urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious maritime activities to the authorities. Be on the lookout for persons filling large containers of fuel.

Richard Sankar alleges discrimination in pending lawsuit

– calls out Michael Misick for factually incorrect claims

and Broker with Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty has publicly responded to former premier Michael Misick who this week called for him to be deported.

Sankar had a long-standing case against the former Minister of Border Control, the Governor, Attorney General and others, for a review of his application for Turks and Caicos Islander status. He won that case in May 2021.

This week, he and his spouse won a claim for his same-sex partner to work in the Islands, in line with permissions granted under the TCI Constitution.

That landmark ruling was handed down by Justice Anthony Gruchot this past Tuesday, upholding his partner’s right to work in the TCI, as typically provided for heterosexual spouses.

This week, Misick took to his official social media page to blast the Real Estate Broker – who once worked for the Misick family’s real estate business.

The former premier called on the government to revoke Sankar’s Turks and Caicos Islander status, claiming that it was obtained by fraud.

Misick’s salacious claims –

while not backed by evidence of any kind – are that the man married a woman for Islander status, allegedly never consummated it, then married a man to give him status.

“I further call on the government after revoking Richard Sankar status to have him deported never to set foot in our country again. This is making a mockery of our system and country. Deem him to be persona non grata,” the former premier stated.

Thursday afternoon, March 14, Sankar through his attorney Tim Prudhoe responded to the claims, stating that he married the local woman in 2008 and their divorce became final in 2020.

He stated: “At no stage during that period up-to-any, including the Decree Absolute, was any evidence presented either by or on behalf of my then wife that the marriage was not valid or somehow otherwise void.”

He stated that prior to his marriage, in the first half of 2005, he had applied for a Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) based on the then requirement of five continuous years of work permits.

“That application was never decided. Its existence at all was not even acknowledged on behalf of the TCI Government until 2021.”

He further added that between 1996 and November 2007, he held a work permit with a well-known real estate company associated with the Misick family.

“On November 2, 2007, I resigned from that employment for the purposes of entry into business with a Turks and Caicos Islander (then, a “Belonger”) in a competing real estate business to that of my former employer.

“On November 6, 2007, during the period when Michael Misick was the Premier, I was placed on the Stop List (a power of the Director of Immigration, then Desmond Wilson). Thus, preventing my re-

entry to the jurisdiction.

“No reason has ever been given as to why Part VI (Sections 59-60) of the Immigration Ordinance was used to so designate me.

“The inference being that this related to my change of employment status. In circumstances also unknown to me, on or about January 8, 2008, I was removed from the Stop List.

“In January 2008, following that removal of my name from the Stop List, I returned to TCI. As indicated above, I married later that year.”

He said after applicable spousal interviews of him and his then wife during the period of their marriage

and the necessary court application for permission to do so, he started judicial review proceedings in order to force issuance of his immigration status.

Those proceedings were heard before (then) Turks and Caicos Islander Judge, Carlos Simons OBE KC.

Those proceedings revealed that the documentary disclosure by the respondents to the judicial review proceedings could not produce any documents in respect of his early 2005 application for a PRC.

“I was granted that status by a certificate dated May 19, 2021.”

“So, over 15 years after I had first applied for PRC. The existence of such application the government even failed to disclose.”

He stated that:” In the hope that one day it could be made clear how an employment disagreement with a powerful family of Turks and Caicos Islanders could ever be used for the purposes of the Stop List, on September 6, 2021, I issued legal proceedings in the TCI Supreme Court against the then Director of Immigration, Desmond Wilson, relating to the still unexplained decision to place me on the Stop List.”

He said that the case remains pending.

Sankar stated: “If, before posting incorrect and incomplete information on social media, Michael Misick had taken steps to ask me about the facts then I would have been able to provide them. I now do so.”

Fire extinguishing service quickly responds to dumpsite flare-up

As the government valiantly tries to tackle the long-standing issue of the Providenciales dumpsite, residents in the surrounding areas are urged to remain vigilant and protect themselves against smoke emitting from the site.

The warnings came over the weekend from the Environmental Health Department and Minister of Public Works, who also gave an update on ongoing works at the site.

Over the weekend residents complained of smoke from as far as the Leeward Highway area, when typically, the communities

of Wheeland and Blue Hills are the ones affected by smoke from the dumpsite Minister Knowles said the fire originated from a fire extinguishing exercise during the early morning hours of Saturday, March 9.

He said the flare-up was identified by TCI Green Ecological Corporation Limited, during their routine site inspection, in the northwestern area of the landfill site on the edge of the decommissioned landfill cell. The fire is attributed to deep-seated hotspots in the

landfill.

“Swift action was taken by alerting the Domestic Fire Service and other supporting agencies to contain the situation. Consequently, the site was temporarily closed to the public for safety reasons until the fire was brought under control.”

The fire was brought under control the following day and landfill operations resumed.

The minister has reminded residents of the fire extinguishing service put in place last month and has been slated to run until June.

He noted that the primary aim of the initiative is to eliminate hotspots around the landfill, which have been causing smoke issues affecting the Wheeland community.

“Therefore, ongoing extinguishing and remediation activities should be anticipated.

“However, every effort will be made to minimize and promptly address any potential effects such as hotspot flare-ups, which could escalate into larger fires.”

Knowles said public safety and the well-being of all residents remain paramount as these efforts

to mitigate the situation continue. He added: “We appreciate and ask for your continued cooperation and understanding as we strive to modernise the Providenciales solid waste management facility.”

Meanwhile, the Environmental Health Department continues to remind residents to keep doors and windows closed to avoid any potential exposure to smoke when fires at the dumpsite are being extinguished.

highlighting the importance of local history and heritage.

In the secondary school category, Clement Howell High School secured third place, while Holy Family Academy claimed second place.

The coveted first-place title went to HJ Robinson, showcasing their dedication and expertise in local studies.

At the primary level, Enid Capron

Primary School and Richmond Hill Preparatory secured third and second places, respectively, while Holy Family Academy captured first place among the 11 competing primary schools.

The event celebrated learning, teamwork, and the rich cultural tapestry of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Celebrating reading during an interminable Grand Turk bank queue

Fridays, it seems, bear a peculiar charm, though this occurrence isn’t confined to them alone. As I ascend the steps toward Grand Turk’s sole surviving retail bank, the familiar sight greets me: a queue, stretching beyond the entrance. This afternoon was no exception. Twelve individuals stood ahead of me, each awaiting their turn with the day’s solitary teller. This spectacle is hardly out of the ordinary for the newly rebranded bank in the heart of our nation’s capital. The era when multiple tellers attended to the customers is a distant memory. Yet, the presence of at least one bank offers a sliver of consolation. With each customer transaction averaging three minutes, I braced myself for a 40-minute wait, clinging to a shred of optimism.

In the serpentine queues of Grand Turk’s sole bank, a curious ballet unfolds. Some residents adopt the stoic grace of statues, embarking on mental voyages far from the drudgery of the line. A few spirited souls wage vocal battles against the bank’s “service” - a term used here more loosely than a banker’s tie on a hot Friday afternoon. Then there are the digital warriors, thumb-gladiators armed with smartphones, deftly swiping

away the monotony. They send texts, fire off emails, or dive into the latest viral game, each tap and swipe a defiant stand against the slow march of time. In the age of instant gratification, these gadgets become their shields against the ancient art of waiting.

I find myself caught in a tangle of feelings with each visit to that sole Grand Turk bank. On one side of this emotional coin, I share the frustration that simmers among us patrons, a frustration borne of the interminable waits and the seemingly indifferent stance of those at the helm. They appear blissfully oblivious to the throng of discontent whispering through the queue. Yet, it’s only fair to tip the scales with a dash of empathy for the lone, beleaguered teller who stands as our solitary beacon of service. Thrust into the limelight, this young individual navigates her daunting role with a grace and efficiency that belies the

pressure cooker environment. It’s a testament to her resilience, serving as a stark reminder of the human element often overlooked in our haste to judge.

Once I resign myself to the inevitable 40 to 60-minute wait in the bank line, my spirits lift. This enforced pause becomes a cherished opportunity to indulge in one of my favourite activities: reading. Kindle in hand, I’ve turned the bank’s inefficiencies into my personal reading retreat.

Over the past year alone, this unexpected silver lining has allowed me to revisit six novels by Graham Greene, delve into an exquisite anthology of Caribbean Short Stories, and begin G.K. Chesterton’s “The Innocence of Father Brown.” This collection of twelve detective stories, featuring the clerical sleuth Father Brown, marks the first in a series of five volumes that have enriched my wait times immeasurably.

It’s no surprise that Chesterton’s works mirror his religious convictions, given his protagonist, Father Brown, is a Roman Catholic priest. Father Brown’s character embodies what many would describe as “traditional values,” yet he stands firmly with the marginalised - workers, underdogs, and the impoverished - adding a layer of appeal. His approach to solving mysteries through psychology contrasts sharply with Sherlock Holmes’s reliance on physical evidence, offering readers a window into Chesterton’s own mindset. Among the 53 Father Brown stories, not every tale reaches the pinnacle of literary achievement, and discerning readers may spot a few implausible elements and narrative flaws. However, these minor shortcomings are vastly outweighed by the rich deposits of psychological insight and timeless wisdom scattered throughout the

series.

The detective stories by G.K. Chesterton captivate with their wit and clever one-liners, exemplifying superb entertainment. A notable example is when a character muses, “The criminal is the creative artist; the detective only the critic,” highlighting the unique perspectives Chesterton brings to the genre. One memorable moment comes at the conclusion of the first Father Brown story, where the priest-detective unveils a jewel thief, impersonating a priest. The revealing exchange - “But, as a matter of fact, another part of my trade, too, made me sure you weren’t a priest.” “What?” asked the exasperated thief. “You attacked reason. It’s bad theology,” Father Brown declares, pinpointing the flaw in the thief’s disguise—serves as a brilliant end to an immensely entertaining tale.

Sometimes it is best to stick with what or who you know

INTRODUCTION

I know that I always encourage you to take the risk because the greater the risk, the greater the reward. However, sometimes you need to stick with what or who you know. The thing is you know what you have but you don’t know what you are getting. You may ask then how to know when to stick with what or who you know.

Let me give you a simple example. I was having an issue with my Samsung phone; at least I thought I was. My family convinced me to switch to an iPhone. I took their advice and did that and now I wish I had stuck with my Samsung phone.

First, I am having some of the same issues with the iPhone so it seems that it was not the phone that was having issues but rather it was the telephone network.

STICK WITH WHAT YOU KNOW

Do not be too anxious to get out of a situation. If you know for sure that what you are doing is your purpose, then stick with what you know.

You will face challenges and life is full of challenges but, it does not mean you need to give up. Perhaps those challenges are there to propel you to fulfil your purpose.

You may be in a relationship

or in a job and you are very bored and so you may consider moving into another relationship or another job. If boredom is your reason for moving on, then you should try to stick with what you know. Don’t move or leave yet. Have a conversation with your partner or your employer about your feelings. Try different things in your relationship or in your job. The thing is you move into another relationship or job and experience the same thing, so it is best to

enhance what you are doing now. You may also want to consider speaking with a counsellor because maybe there are issues in your life that you must yet deal with or overcome.

If you enjoy what you do, then stick with what you know, even if you have an offer for a higher salary. A salary increase is not everything. Review the flexibility and the overall compensation. The same thing applies in a relationship, someone with a lot of money may entice you to leave your relationship. Money is not everything.

WHEN TO NOT STICK AROUND?

There are some circumstances in which you move away. For example, if you are in an abusive or toxic relationship, then you should not stick with what you know. You need to get out of that

You know what you have but don’t know what you are getting implications on safety and security

relationship. Likewise, if you are in a toxic working environment, then perhaps you should not remain in that environment because sooner or later you may end up being toxic. If you were presented with an opportunity that you always long for, then yes, go for it. Take the risk. After all, that is what you always wanted.

CONCLUSION

You see there are times when you should stick with what you know and there are times when you must move on. You must make that decision, but you need to consider the pros and cons. Don’t be too quick and decide based on your emotions.

Think long term and honestly, there are some situations that can be fixed. Try fixing something before moving on but as I said if it involves abuse, then you need to move on.

Haiti’s mass jailbreak, gang violence and political turmoil

in the TCI

The start of Haiti’s history is quite a phenomenal inspiration!

Dubbed“Saint Domingue” in the colonial era, Haiti is home to the world’s only successful slave revolt, which inaugurated the world’s first Black republic, but this was not without a crippling price.

Today, the nation is marred by stagnated economic activities and grave political instability, which has now flared into endless domestic violence.

So, what happened to Haiti?

First, colonialism played a huge role, with big players like France, Spain and the US, amongst others, destabilising the country.

Europeans exploited “Saint Domingue” for coffee and sugar while importing slaves from West Africa to work on plantations.

that exploited slave labour – Spain controlled Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba and; Britain in Jamaica, Bahamas, and the US –feared a similar revolt.

This phobia forced colonizers to isolate the Haitian economy from the rest of the trading world and subsequently, the newly formed nation’s economy was left to deteriorate.

And of course, there isracism. But it did not end there!

The biggest evil was France! Having lost the lucrative source

for sugar, it demanded reparation of 150 million Francs in gold for Haiti’s independence. And over the next century, Haiti would pay an equivalent of US$30 billion in damages.

It is clear, today, that international determinants have led to the current devastating status quo in Haiti.

However, unstable domestic politics, environmental disasters and substandard economic decisions have further exasperated Haiti’s situation, and this is

symbolic of Cite Soleil – a densely populated neighborhood of Portau-Prince that is in complete control of gangs.

You might be asking, what does this have to do with the TCI? Well!

A lot! Just 190 miles away, Haiti’s recent unrest could effectuate a spillover effect here at home.

Since Haiti’s dissensions, 4,800 prisoners have escaped from two major prisons in the capital. Additionally, many residents are fleeing rape, murder, and kidnapping.

But where would they go?

Some might flee to the vast remote areas in Haiti; however, we cannot dismiss that many will take the usual ‘escape route’ to the TCI; therefore, lawmakers must protect its borders, as some of these escapees could find themselves on TCI shores.

If I were the Premier, I’d summon the British Navy right away and

direct the police and marine branch, immigration and customs and the TCI regiment to conduct joint surveillance operations in North Side, Sapodilla Bay, Five Cays and other vulnerable landing areas with drones and boats. This is one time the authorities cannot fail in protecting the borders of the TCI – not with 1,000 gang members on the loose!

More so, I plead with TCI’s Haitian Diaspora to help deal with the dire situation in their ancestral home. Right now, Haitians require food, water, lodging and energy for their survival.

You should know, too, that the Dominican Republic wasted no time in securing its border and now there are hundreds of military personnel on the Dominican-Haiti frontline.

I urge lawmakers to act now, as this gang fever can escalate quickly and far!

TCIG enhances border security on outer islands in wake of Haiti’s unrest

The government has increased shoreline patrols and vigilance in the outer islands, intensified presence with day and night patrols, and embedded border force officers into operations, as part of its efforts to enhance border security in the Turks and Caicos Islands

To mitigate any threats of illegal immigration, guns and organised crime stemming from the ongoing unrest in Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands government has announced a series of proactive measures to enhance border security.

To this end, Operation Verify has been activated to scrutinise highrisk vessels entering Providenciales and Grand Turk ports.

This is according to the Minister of Immigration and Border Services, Hon Arlington Musgrove, who provided an update to the country on the government’s efforts in an audio report disseminated to the local

“We have been on heightened alert since the unrest in Haiti began, and we have not had any landings and we haven’t had any sightings of landings within the

last 24 [hours],” said Musgrove.

“I want to reassure the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands that our border force, with determination and unwavering commitment to your safety, is working to safeguard our borders,

along with our law enforcement partners.”

The Minister highlighted several key initiatives that are being implemented to increase border security.

He said: “We have intensified our presence in the outer islands with border force officers working day and night to bolster vigilance and patrols along the shoreline.

“Additionally, we have embedded border force officers into the Regiment in Providenciales to augment our operations, including shoreline patrols, vehicle checkpoints, and marine surveillance.”

The Minister also emphasised the importance of regional collaboration in addressing border security issues. “We are working closely with our regional partners to ensure that we are all doing our part to prevent illegal activity from entering the region,” Musgrove added.

“We have activated operations to scrutinise high-risk vessels at Providenciales and Grand

Turk ports, and we are working to enhance Operation Verify to scrutinise entry documents of individuals arriving by regional and international flights resulting in the identification of multiple offenders.”

He stressed that these measures are part of a larger operation to safeguard the Turks and Caicos Islands on all fronts.

Furthermore, additional enforcement support has been deployed to the other islands with plans in place for rapid assistance to North and Middle Caicos if needed.

The Minister concluded by thanking the multi-agency partners who have been working together to protect the borders of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

“I want to thank the Border Force officers, the regiment, and the TCI police officers for their we appreciate you, we know you’re out day and night and we want to thank you for protecting the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Musgrove said.

Haiti’s prime minister Ariel Henry resigns as law and order collapses

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has agreed to resign following weeks of mounting pressure and increasing violence in the impoverished country.

It comes after regional leaders met in Jamaica on Monday to discuss a political transition in the country.

Mr Henry is currently stranded in Puerto Rico after being prevented by armed gangs from returning home.

He said his government would resign following the “installation of [a transition] council”.

“I’m asking all Haitians to remain calm and do everything they can for peace and stability to come back as fast as possible,” Mr Henry said in a video address announcing his resignation.

He has not been allowed back into Haiti after leaving in late January for visits to Guyana and Kenya, where he signed a deal on the deployment of an international security force to help tackle violence.

Mr Henry had led the country on a supposedly interim basis since July 2021, following former President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination, but had repeatedly postponed elections - saying security had to be restored first.

Many Haitians questioned the length of his unelected governance and Mr Henry’s resignation had been one of the key demands of the heavily armed gangs that have recently tighten their grip on the capital, Port-au-Prince.

These gangs have attacked the main prison to help thousands of inmates escape, as well as targeting police stations, the capital’s international airport and its port.

Port-au-Prince and the surrounding region is under a month-long state of emergency, while a curfew has been extended.

The head of the UN’s World Food Programme in Haiti, JeanMartin Bauer, said on Monday that more than 360,000 people had now been displaced.

“We’re also seeing an interruption in the flow of goods, and this has huge impacts on food

markets in Port-au-Prince,” said Mr Bauer, adding that goods were currently unable to get into Haiti by land, sea or air.

The country was already dealing with malnutrition and there are serious concerns that the problem will soon become significantly worse.

Matthias Pierre, a former elections minister in Haiti, described the current situation in the country as “very precarious” with an army and police force that is unequipped to deal with the unrest.

Mr Pierre, who broke the news of Mr Henry’s resignation to the BBC’s Newsday programme before it was publicly confirmed, said the gangs were now pushing to be part of any new powersharing deal.

He added that such a political settlement was impossible without the “support” of an international armed force.

There are now questions over what will happen to the 1,000-strong UN-backed security force Kenya is expected to lead in Haiti to try and restore order there.

The top civil servant in Kenya’s foreign affairs ministry has told the BBC that its deployment of police to Haiti has been put on hold

following Mr Henry’s resignation.

Korir Sing’oei added that Kenya would wait for the installation of a new constitutional authority before further decisions were made.

The US said it saw no need to delay the mission.

Its proposed contribution to this security force now stands at $300m (£234m) after Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged a further $100m to it.

Another $33m has been allocated for humanitarian aid.

The Caricom group of Caribbean nations, which has been meeting in Jamaica to discuss the crisis in Haiti, has outlined what it wants a transitional council to look like.

It would be made up of seven voting members and two observers and include representatives from several coalitions, the private sector and civil society, and one religious leader.

Anyone intending to run in Haiti’s next elections will not be able to participate.

The US said it expects the council will be appointed within the next two days, which will then appoint an interim prime minister.

It is hoped the council will pave the way for the first elections in Haiti since 2016. (BBC)

BVI: Attorney at law found dead with gunshot wounds

There is shock and disbelief in the British Virgin Islands as prominent attorney Jamal S. Smith was found dead with gunshot wounds at his residence on Tortola. This is the territory’s first homicide for 2024.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) said on Monday it received a report via the 911 call centre at 7:30 pm about a shooting at Manuel Reef. Officers of the RVIPF and ambulance immediately responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, thorough searches were conducted in the area, but nothing suspicious was initially found. Further investigations by officers led them to a residence in the Manuel Hill area.

After a thorough search of the premises, officers discovered the lifeless body of Jamal Smith, 46, of Manuel Hill, an Attorney at law, with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police force said it is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The RVIPF is appealing to anyone who may have seen Jamal Smith on Monday evening or anyone who have any information related to this incident to

confidentially call the Crime Stoppers line at 800-8477 (TIPS) or overseas call 1-284-800-8477 with the relevant information; or contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.

Jamal S. Smith, an attorney, is the Founder & Principal of THORNTON SMITH, a general practice law firm which expertise in complex corporate transactions. His death has created much concern on the usually quiet island of Tortola.

Governor of the BVI, Daniel Pruce in a Facebook post said: “I’m deeply saddened to see this. Jamal’s commitment to public service made an important contribution to the Virgin Islands. My thoughts are with his loved ones. I would urge anyone with any relevant information to be in touch with the RVIPF”

Acting Governor of the Virgin Islands, David Archer Jr, has expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Jamal Smith.

He said Smith will be remembered for his altruism as a prominent member of the Virgin Islands legal community who

gave many years of service to the Territory by serving on a number of Boards including the Labour Arbitration Tribunal.

“As Acting Governor, I have already spoken to the Commissioner of Police and will attend the National Security Council meeting this afternoon. I am appealing to anyone with relevant information to contact the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).”

Security Council (NSC) in a statement said it convened a special meeting today to receive a briefing from the Commissioner of Police in light of Monday’s homicide of attorney Jamal Smith.

The NSC acknowledged that the Territory unfortunately recorded its first homicide for 2024.

The NSC further acknowledged that the recent murder is shocking and disturbing and has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy to crime.

All communities throughout the Territory are being encouraged to support the police in the current investigations, specifically anyone who had contact with Jamal Smith over the past 24 to 48 hours, by calling Crime Stoppers and the confidential and untraceable hotline 800-8477[TIPS], 800-8478477 and 368-9339.

The NSC said it continues to deliberate strategically on all options to confront and eradicate the scourge of crime in the Territory.

In its condolences to the family of Smith, the NSC recommitted to introducing measures and any relevant legislation to bring a resolution to this and all other unsolved crimes.

The National Security Council said it considers matters relating to internal security and any significant security developments in the Territory, including the occurrence of significant criminal activity.

Haiti violence: ‘We’re living with death on a daily basis’

The sound of gunshots piercing through the air has become all too familiar for people living in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

Armed attacks have been mounting in recent weeks as the capital’s notorious gangs united to oust Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Around 80% of the city is now estimated to be under gang control and more than 15,000 people have been displaced just in the past weeks.

Many of the Haitians who have contacted the BBC World Service’s Outside Source programme during this latest surge of violence say that they have long suffered under the rule of the gangs.

Annie is one of them. The 28year old fled her home in Port-auPrince two years ago, along with her brother and her mother.

“It felt like I lost my childhood memories, they are all destroyed, completely erased,” says Annie, who works in education.

“When I left the house, I left it without any hope of coming back,” she adds. “I saw so many awful things I never thought I would see. We were afraid for our lives.”

After some time had passed, Annie and her family returned to their home, but there was nothing left for them to save.

“It started with gunshots… particularly in the night,” she recalls the time when gangs started to take control of the neighbourhood where she lived.

Although they moved to a safer area, she says some nights she still hears gunshots and the anxiety and violence are a constant in her life.

“We are living with death on a daily basis.”

Now that gangs control Haiti’s

Hundreds of thousands of Haitians have been displaced, more than 15,000 in recent weeks

major ports and many of its water facilities, access to food and water is severely limited - bumping up prices that are already high because of inflation.

Annie says she and her family avoid going out and if she needs to buy food from a nearby market, she varies her route to ensure her safety.

“Many people are living on less than a dollar a day and they cannot afford food and that is really, really hard,” she says.

‘I CRY BECAUSE I LOST EVERYTHING’

Another Port-au-Prince resident, Kerby, laments that he wakes up most mornings with “no money in [his] pockets”.

It was not always like this.

Kerby used to have a business in Port-au-Prince and a house where he lived with his wife and daughter.

But one day in 2022, gang members came to his business demanding protection money.

When he was unable to pay, they came to his home and threatened to kidnap his family. Unable to raise the sum the gang demanded, he took his family and fled to CapHaitian.

Cap-Haitian, Haiti’s second biggest city, located in the country’s north, is a safer place to live and Kerby says he can now go outside without coming face-to-face with violence.

But he has lost all of his financial security: “Right now, I don’t have anything.

“I wake up in the morning and if we have sugar in the house, we make sugar water and put a bit of salt in it, just to drink it and stop the pain of hunger.”

But even the price of water, which he buys in plastic bags from a roadside stall, has recently tripled in price.

On a good day when he has some money, Kerby says he buys some bread for himself and his family.

He is struggling to come to terms with this new reality.

“Sometimes I cry because I lost everything,” he admits. But he says he does not regret leaving Port-auPrince in order to provide a safer life for his daughter.

SEPARATED FROM FAMILY Bernado is currently stuck in the north of the country after being sent there for his work. He usually

lives further south, with his wife and three children.

He says he is unable to travel as the streets are unsafe.

Six months ago, when his wife went into labour with their youngest child, gangs were exchanging gunfire close to his house.

“With a lot of shooting outside, my wife waited to give birth, there were no cars outside to bring her to a hospital,” he recalls.

He also describes the struggle to find a hospital for his wife to give birth in, as the public one that is closest to his house is in a gangcontrolled area.

In the end, Bernado got her to a nearby private hospital. A costly option, but the only one which allowed her to deliver her baby in a safer environment.

Even before the recent escalation of violence, the health system in Haiti was struggling, with only about 60% of Haiti’s residents having access to some form of health care services, according to the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

‘WE HAITIANS ARE RESILIENT’

Tatiana, a 47-year-old headteacher, has just returned to her home in a suburb of Port-au-Prince.

She, her husband and their two daughters were displaced twice in recent months, most recently when thousands of inmates escaped Portau-Prince’s main jail.

They quickly packed all their necessities in a car, left their dogs behind with food piled high in their bowls, and kept in touch on handheld radios with neighbours who had stayed behind.

They left in a convoy with others who were fleeing their area.

Tatiana says she is lucky she can stay with family in the mountains. Conditions are cramped, but they have solar panels for electricity.

But their daughters have nevertheless picked up on the tension. “My youngest [daughter] feels the anxiety her dad and myself are experiencing.”

Despite all the challenges, she is still determined to keep teaching her classes via online lessons.

Most students in Port-au-Prince currently do not have access to education as schools remain shut.

Tatiana knows of one school in the city centre which had to shut its doors after bullets were fired into the classroom while students were inside.

She says she and her pupils are fortunate to have access to relatively reliable internet and electricity.

“I have teachers sitting in their cars because they use the electricity from the lighters in their cars to teach the students,” she explains.

“Some of them used to teach from the roof of their houses to get better internet, but that is not possible any more with all the violence.”

Bahamas drafting “very, very aggressive” anti-gang bill

National Security Minister Wayne Munroe said a draft antigang legislation is “very, very aggressive” and Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis wants Cabinet ministers to review it before it is released for consultation.

Mr Davis said weeks ago that the bill would be released imminently.

The murder rate has dropped after a bloody January. Still, government officials have said the anti-gang legislation is critical to reducing murders, many of which are suspected to be gang-related and retaliatory.

In January, Mr Munroe said the administration was grappling with how to prove someone is a gang

member.

“The nature of The Bahamas is this: a bunch of us are related to each other,” he said. “So, if you see us together and acting in concert, are you saying we’re a criminal gang? And when you charge us being a criminal gang, I say, well, that’s just my cousin. The question of burden of proof, standards of proof, have to be looked at with regard to particular circumstances.”

“The starting issue is this: How do you prove someone’s in a gang? There’s issues about the burden of proof,” he told reporters at an Office of the Prime Minister press briefing. “One of

the most vexing things is your relationships are often known by the person themselves who are in a relationship.”

Asked if he believed the current anti-gang legislation was ineffective, Mr Munroe noted the lack of prosecutions over the years.

He said: “It’s been in place for some time, right? The police have their intelligence of who these gang members are. The fact that you’ve not had a multiplicity of prosecutions indicates that the current law in our reality has issues around proof that are challenging, and that is what we’re looking at to address.” (Tribune242)

Schumer calls for new government, ‘course corrections’ by Israel

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Shumer called on Thursday for new elections in Israel, harshly criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an obstacle to peace.

Democrat Schumer, long a supporter of Israel and the highestranking Jewish elected official, told the Senate that Netanyahu’s government “no longer fits the needs of Israel” five months into a war that began with attacks on Israel by Hamas militants on Oct. 7.

“As a democracy, Israel has the right to choose its own leaders, and we should let the chips fall where they may. But the important thing is that Israelis are given a choice. There needs to be a fresh debate about the future of Israel after Oct. 7,” Schumer said.

“In my opinion, that is best accomplished by holding an election,” he said.

Schumer said it would be a “grave mistake” for Israel to reject a two-state solution and urged negotiators in the Israel-Gaza conflict to do everything possible to secure a ceasefire, free hostages and get aid into Gaza.

Hundreds rescued from love scam centre in the Philippines

Hundreds of people have been rescued from a scam centre in the Philippines that made them pose as lovers online.

Police said they raided the centre on Thursday and rescued 383 Filipinos, 202 Chinese and 73 other foreign nationals.

The centre, which is about 100km north of Manila, was masquerading as an online gambling firm, they said.

South East Asia has become a hub for scam centres where the scammers themselves are often entrapped and forced into criminal activity.

Young and tech-savvy victims are often lured into running these illegal operations, which range from money laundering and crypto fraud to so-called love scams. The latter are also known as “pig butchering” scams, named after the farming practice of fattening pigs before slaughtering them.

Thursday’s raid near Manila was sparked by a tip-off from a Vietnamese man who managed to flee the scam centre last month,

police said.

The man, who in his 30s, arrived in the Philippines in January this year, after being offered what he was told would be a chef’s job, said Winston Casio, spokesman for the presidential commission against organised crime.

But the man soon realised that he, like hundreds of others, had fallen prey to human traffickers running love and cryptocurrency scams.

Those trapped in the Bamban centre were forced to send “sweet nothings” to their victims, many of whom were Chinese, Mr Casio said - they would check in on their recipients with questions about their day and if and what they had eaten for their last meal. They would also send photos of themselves to cultivate the relationship.

Mr Casio said those running the scam centres trapped “good looking men and women to lure [victims]”.

In May last year, Philippine authorities rescued more than 1,000 people who were held captive and forced to run online scams inside a freeport zone in Clark, a city also north of Manila - in what remains its biggest bust to date.

A UN report last August estimated that hundreds of thousands of people from around the world have been trafficked to Southeast Asia to run online scams.

The BBC has previously spoken to people who have fallen victim to these criminal networks.

Many have said they travelled to South East Asian countries such as Cambodia and Myanmar in response to job ads and promises of perks. They are trapped once they arrive, and threatened if they refuse to participate in the scams. Escapees and survivors have alleged torture and inhuman treatment.

Michael Gove names groups as he unveils extremism definition

Michael Gove has named five groups he said would be assessed against a new government definition of extremism.

The communities secretary told MPs he had concerns about the “Islamist orientation” of three of the organisations.

He also named two groups he said promoted a “Neo-Nazi ideology”.

The new extremism definition applies to, but does not criminalise, groups promoting an ideology based on “violence, hatred or intolerance”.

Groups judged to meet the new definition - expected to be named in the coming weekswill be blocked from receiving government funding and meeting officials.

Spain MPs back amnesty law for Catalan separatists

Spain’s Congress has approved a controversial amnesty law that seeks to benefit nationalists facing legal action for separatist activity in the north-eastern region of Catalonia.

The law, a revised version of a bill rejected in January, received 178 votes in the 350-seat chamber.

The amnesty aims to remove pending legal action against people accused of separatist activity, mainly stemming from a 2017 Catalan bid for secession.

It now has to be backed by the Senate.

Socialist Party spokesman Patxi López said the amnesty helped “end a period of conflict and open a time of reconciliation and unity”.

The most high-profile potential beneficiary of the law is former Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont, who led the failed independence attempt and has been living in Belgium ever since,

to avoid the reach of the Spanish courts.

Mr Puigdemont is being investigated for terrorism-related crimes for his alleged role in protests in 2019.

However, his Together for Catalonia (JxCat) party voted against the amnesty in January, arguing that it failed to provide guarantees protecting him and several others from prosecution for terrorism.

The revised version of the bill stipulates that only crimes deemed terrorism by the EU, rather than Spanish law, will be unprotected by the amnesty.

The parliamentary support of Mr Puigdemont’s JxCat and the fellow pro-secession Catalan Republican Left (ERC) has been crucial in allowing Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to govern since his investiture in November.

Three years ago, Mr Sánchez’s

advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance, that aims to:

1. negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or

2. undermine, overturn or replace the UK’s system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights; or

3. intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve the results in (1) or (2).”

‘INSUFFICIENTLY POLICED’

Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner said her party would “challenge and probe” the government’s new definition,but pressed Mr Gove for more detail on how it will “work in practice”.

She also questioned the timing of the announcement, noting the Conservatives have been in government for 13 years.

In response, Mr Gove said the previous extremism definition, in place since 2011, was “insufficiently precise” and had been “insufficiently policed”.

Groups and individuals labelled extremist will have the right to seek reassessment and submit new evidence to a review.

If they still disagree, they can challenge the government’s decision through a judicial review of the decision. (BBC)

Catalan MPs celebrated outside Spain’s Congress of Deputies after MPs backed the amnesty law

Socialist government granted pardons to nine Catalan separatists who were given long jail terms for their part in a 2017 independence declaration after a referendum declared illegal by the courts. The amnesty could benefit hundreds of people.

While Mr Sánchez has insisted the initiative aims to improve the social and political climate in Catalonia, his critics say it is unconstitutional and is purely aimed at maintaining the support of nationalists.

Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who is president of the Madrid region for the opposition conservative People’s Party (PP), described it as “the most corrupt law of our democracy”. PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said the prime minister had now “fulfilled everything” that the separatists had asked for, with the sole aim of remaining in office “for a while”. Mr Puigdemont has been thrust further into the spotlight after Catalan President Pere Aragonès on Wednesday called a snap

election for 12 May, because parties were unable to agree on the region’s annual budget.

JxCat’s secretary general, Jordi Turull, has appeared to suggest that Mr Puigdemont will be the party’s candidate for president of the region.

The Spanish prime minister praised the vote as opening a “new period of coexistence and prosperity in Catalonia”, but the Catalan president said it marked a “new stage towards achieving liberty for Catalonia”. (CNN)

Oscars 2024: Oppenheimer sweeps awards as Cillian Murphy wins best actor

Cillian Murphy has become the first Irish-born winner of the best actor award, as Oppenheimer swept the Oscars.

The film dominated proceedings, winning best picture, best director for Christopher Nolan, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr.

Murphy was named best leading actor for his acclaimed portrayal

of theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer.

The actor said he was “overwhelmed” to have won, adding: “I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.”

He thanked Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for “the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on”.

He concluded: “We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better

or for worse, we are all living in Oppenheimer’s world, so I’d like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.”

The ceremony saw Oppenheimer win seven prizes overall, while Poor Things took four - including best actress for Emma Stone - and The Zone of Interest scored two.

Downey Jr won best supporting actor for his portrayal of US government official Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.

Accepting the award, the actor joked: “I’d like to thank my terrible childhood, and the Academy, in that order.

“I needed this job more than it needed me,” he continued. “I stand here before you a better man because of it.”

The star also paid tribute to his wife Susan Downey, who he said had found him as a “a snarling rescue pet”, adding that she “loved me back to life, that’s why I’m here”.

Downey Jr, best known for his run as Marvel’s Iron Man, has enjoyed a hugely successful Hollywood comeback after serious drug addiction issues more than two decades ago, which saw him serve a prison sentence after missing courtordered drug tests.

He concluded his speech by telling the audience: “What we do is meaningful and what we decide to make is important.”

Host Jimmy Kimmel joked the cast and crew were “getting Oppen-hammered at the bar”, such was the film’s success.

furniture online. During an interview with Complex on Monday (March 11), Long, whose real name is Priscilla Renea, shared the backstory of how she composed one of Rihanna’s most beloved ballads with producer Jermaine Jackson of The Runners.

“They had the chords and everything. I listened, I went back into the room, and they gave me the file,” Long recalled.

“At the time I was planning to move to L.A. I was actually online looking for furniture when Maine comes in the room, and he’s like, ‘What you got?’ I didn’t have anything, because I had been messing around, and I looked at my computer,” she went on.

“I said ‘California King Bed,’ and he said, ‘OK,’ and then he left. So I was like, ‘Oh, now I gotta write that,’ Long recalled.

“I wrote the song in like 10 minutes. I was like, ‘Turn it up, let me get this done real quick,’ so I could go back to looking for my furniture.”

Originally written for Kelly Clarkson, her publisher decided “they were going to cut it for Rihanna” which was a thrill for Long.

“I was super excited,” she recalled. “She was on tour at the time, but she cut the song, and the rest is history. You

wouldn’t think that she would do something like that.”

The success of the song catapulted Long from an “unknown” artist into an in-demand composer which was life-changing as she went on to write hits for Fifth Harmony, Ariana Grande, and many others.

“After that, I did work with her in the studio many times, but that was my first entry point into my journey with Rih,” Long said.

Despite all of the success, Long also explained the struggles that songwriters face in the industry.

“Songwriters get beat up a lot,” she said. “They take a lot of L’s in order to deliver this incredible product, which is really like the genesis of all the other things that come.”

After grinding for years, 2023 was when Long stepped fully into her destiny as a star. She received three Grammy Award nominations, winning Best R&B Performance for her chart-topping hit “Hrs & Hrs Day”. (Bet.com)

Vybz Kartel: Jamaica dancehall star’s murder conviction overturned

Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel’s conviction for murder has been overturned.

The 48-year-old had been given a life sentence for the killing of associate Clive “Lizard” Williams on the Carribbean island in 2014.

Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, and three codefendants successfully appealed on grounds of juror misconduct.

Authorities in Jamaica will decide whether the case should be retried.

The musician, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is

one of the Commonwealth country’s most popular artists and has collaborated with performers such as Jay-Z and Rihanna.

His 64-day trial was one of the longest in Jamaican history, and ended with Kartel being ordered to serve a minimum of 35 years in jail.

This was later reduced to 32-and-a-half years.

Kartel and his co-accused Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John had maintained their innocence since the original trial.

Max Verstappen: Mercedes would ‘love to have’ Dutchman, says Toto Wolff

Toto Wolff said that Mercedes would “love to have” Max Verstappen next season but admitted his team need to improve their car first.

Verstappen’s future is a subject for debate because of the controversy within Red Bull following allegations made about team boss

Christian Horner.

Wolff said: “A driver will always try to be in the fastest possible car.

“This is where Max is at the moment. I would love to have him but first we need to sort out our car.”

Verstappen, who dominated the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, was drawn into a debate over the future of Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko over the race weekend, amid a power struggle at Red Bull.

Verstappen is under contract to Red Bull until 2028 but BBC Sport has been told Verstappen’s management have had talks with Mercedes in case the situation at Red Bull worsens.

Mercedes have a spare seat alongside George Russell following Lewis Hamilton’s decision to move to Ferrari for 2025.

Wolff said Verstappen, his father Jos and manager Raymond Vermeulen were

“very straight - sometimes uncomfortably straight”, adding: “That is something they will make up their minds (about), but fundamentally a racing driver is calibrated to be in the best car.

“This is a decision Max needs to take and there is no team up and down the grid who wouldn’t do handstands to have him in the car.”

Horner said: “I can’t see any reason why anybody would want to step out of this team. He has great support around him and he is doing a wonderful job with a great car.

“No individual is bigger than the team. We have a phenomenal car. We have one seat open for next year. I have 16 drivers desperate to

be in that car. Checo (Sergio Perez) is in pole position, it is his seat to lose. We have a strong relationship with Max, he is doing a wonderful job and our focus is on track.

“We listen to whatever Max has to say but the team will always make the right decisions for the team.”

Wolff said after the Saudi race, in which Russell and

Hamilton finished sixth and ninth respectively, that the team were perplexed by their lack of performance.

The car was uncompetitive in high-speed corners and Wolff said: “There is something which we don’t understand.

“It’s a more fundamental thing which we believe that the speed should be there. We measure the downforce but we don’t find it on the lap time.

More climate records fall in world’s warmest February

Last month was the world’s warmest February in modern times, the EU’s climate service says, extending the run of monthly records to nine in a row.

Each month since June 2023 has seen new temperature highs for the time of year.

The world’s sea surface is at its hottest on record, while Antarctic sea-ice has again reached extreme lows.

Temperatures are still being boosted by the Pacific’s El Niño weather event, but human-caused climate change is by far the main driver of the warmth.

“Heat-trapping greenhouse gases are unequivocally the main culprit,” stresses Prof Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization.

Carbon dioxide concentrations are at their highest level for at least two million years, according to the UN’s climate body, and increased by near-record levels again over the past year.

Those warming gases helped make February 2024 about 1.77C warmer than “pre-industrial” times - before humans started burning large amounts of fossil fuelsaccording to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

This breaks the previous record, from 2016, by around 0.12C.

These temperatures saw particularly severe heat afflict western Australia, southeast Asia, southern Africa and South America.

Recent records haven’t just been limited to air temperatures. Countless climate metrics are far beyond levels seen in modern times.

One of the most notable is sea surface temperatures. As the graph below shows, the margin of records in recent months has been particularly striking.

Scientists are struggling to explain exactly what’s going on.

Until 2017, Antarctic sea-ice had defied predictions that it would shrink, unlike in the Arctic, where the downward trend has been much clearer.

The apparent recent shiftoccurring at the same time as other records are being broken around the planet - adds to concerns that Antarctic sea-ice may finally be waking up to climate change.

“I don’t think you can say it’s coincidental,” Prof Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter, told BBC News.

“It’s absolutely frightening. The records are just off [the] scale.”

El Niño will continue to have an effect on temperatures and weather patterns for the next few months.

However, a switch to neutral conditions in the Pacific is likely between April and June, according to US science body NOAA, and a further switch to the cool phase known as La Niña could then happen between June and August.

This would likely put a temporary lid on global air temperatures, with a cooler sea surface in the East Pacific allowing less heat to escape and warm the air.

But as long as human activities keep releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gases, temperatures will continue rising in the longterm, ultimately leading to more records and extreme weather.

AN END TO EL NIÑO IN SIGHT

Researchers are keen to stress that the scale and extent of the oceanic heat is not simply a consequence of the natural weather event known as El Niño, which was declared in June 2023.

“We know what to do - stop burning fossil fuels and replace them with more sustainable, renewable sources of energy,” says Dr Friederike Otto, senior lecturer in climate science at Imperial College London.

The 12-month average now sits at 1.56C above pre-industrial levels - after the first year-long breach of Dietician and cancer prevention expert Cynthia Thomson knows you can’t always diet or supplement your way out of getting cancer.

“I was a dietician running marathons when I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and I was in my early 40s,” Thomson, a University of Arizona professor, told Business Insider. “There’s a lot of cancer that we can’t prevent, that we have no idea why people are getting.”

But, as Thomson has discovered through decades of studying the effects of supplements on tens of thousands of people, getting enough calcium and vitamin D can make a clear difference to your risk of developing deadly diseases, including some cancers. In fact, a person’s nutrient intake, which is

largely influenced by their diet, is thought to be responsible for about 30% of their cancer risk.

Her latest study, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, followed more than 36,280 postmenopausal women who’d been randomly assigned to either take vitamin D and calcium or (unknowingly) get a placebo pill instead, for a period of about seven years.

Over time, those supplements seemed to have a small, but measurable effect on reducing cancer deaths. But taking the supplements didn’t come without risks.

After 22 years, when researchers looked back at how the supplementtakers did over time compared to the non-supplementing study participants, they found a 7%

reduction in cancer-related deaths among women who took vitamin D and calcium supplements.

The reductions were especially impressive for invasive breast cancer (19%), and colorectal cancer (31%), like what Thomson once had.

But the news wasn’t all good. Women in the study who took the two supplements together also had a modest but measurable 6% increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US.

Thomson’s team doesn’t know for sure exactly what’s behind that increase, but they suspect the difference may have been caused by the calcium supplements

There are signs that the run of global temperature records may finally come to an end in the months ahead.

Daily fibre supplement may improve brain function in older adults, study finds

Everyone wants to know how to improve their gut health and their brain health. But, what if a daily pill could have a positive effect on both? New research shows that something as simple as a fibre supplement could be used to improve brain function in older adults.

A study published in Nature Communications looked at how fibre might play a role in brain health. Researchers recruited 36 pairs of twins—72 individuals in total—over the age of 60. Each twin received either a placebo or a 7.5-gram fibre supplement (which the study specifies as a prebiotic, which is a type of fibre that feeds the good bacteria, a.k.a probiotics, in your gut) every day for 12 weeks. In addition, all participants performed resistance exercises and ate a protein supplement daily throughout the study.

After 12 weeks, researchers found that the prebiotic supplement had led to significant changes in the participants’ gut microbiomes. In particular, participants taking the supplement saw a significant increase in the number of beneficial bacteria, called Bifidobacteria, in their gut.

Within just 12 weeks, researchers also found that those taking fibre supplements were performing better in tests assessing brain function,

including the Paired Associates learning test which is a key assessment for early Alzheimer’s, together with tests of reaction time and processing speed.

Doctors identify tapeworm larvae, likely from undercooked bacon, in man’s brain

A Florida man with worsening migraines was found to have parasitic tapeworm larvae in his brain, according to a report published this month in the American Journal of Case Reports. Doctors believe that the tapeworm infection originated from his habit of eating undercooked bacon.

The unidentified 52-year-old initially went to see the doctor because his migraines had suddenly worsened over four months. They were happening almost weekly, were very painful and were not responding to migraine medications, according to the report.

His doctor ordered a CT scan, which showed multiple cysts –fluid-filled sacs – throughout his brain. Initially suspecting that he may have a rare neurologic condition called congenital

neuroglial cysts, doctors admitted him to an Orlando hospital to consult with neurosurgery.

Further labs and imaging at the hospital showed that the cysts were parasitic tapeworm ?larvae that had taken up residence in his brain and caused an infection called neurocysticercosis, the report said.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic tissue infection that happens when a person swallows tapeworm eggs from the feces of a person who has intestinal tapeworm. The tapeworm eggs then become larval cysts that can infect the brain, muscles or other tissues, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Research has found that people

who consume higher amounts of dietary fibre are less likely to develop dementia, says Prest. “While the direct link between fibre and dementia is still being investigated, some reasons why fibre may play a role in reducing the development of dementia include the reduction in blood pressure which protects against vascular dementia, and a healthier gut microbiome which lessens inflammation and protects the brain from developing dementia,” she explains.

More specifically, research supports that a meal plan rich in fiber (such as Mediterranean, MIND, and DASH diets) may help prevent cognitive decline and dementia, says Keri Gans, M.S., R.D., registered dietitian and author of The Small Change Diet. Still, keep in mind that forestalling dementia requires using the brain throughout your life, maintaining a healthy body, and avoiding habits that harm the brain, notes Dr. Sachdev.

So, why does this study make a difference? Well, finding an improvement in cognition by fueling the gut microbiome with a prebiotic confirms what other studies have previously reported about the brain-gut axis, says Prest. “Building and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome may be the key to improving age-related changes in cognition.”

Adding more fiber to your daily diet is an easy step in the right direction for better brain health later in life, says Gans. If you want to start loading up on fiber at mealtime, Prest recommends aiming for 25-30 grams of fiber a day. “You can do this by making half of your grain choices whole grains and choosing more fruits in vegetables during meals and snacks,” she suggests. In this case, the man did not have typical risk factors: He did not travel to high-risk areas, and he did not have close contact with pigs or live in an area with poor sanitation. the man most likely contracted the parasite via “autoinfection.” He may have gotten an intestinal tapeworm, called taeniasis, from eating undercooked bacon that had larval cysts in it and then, after improper handwashing, eaten the tapeworm eggs that he had excreted in feces, leading to neurocysticercosis.

“It can only be speculated but given our patient’s predilection

for undercooked pork and benign exposure history, we favor that his cysticercosis was transmitted via autoinfection after improper handwashing after he had contracted taeniasis himself from his eating habits,” the report said. The man was treated with steroids and anti-parasitic agents. His headaches improved, and the cysts in his brain shrunk, according to the report.

Doctors have witnessed a spike in colon cancer cases among younger populations in India. A 2023 study by the Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) found that the occurrence of colon cancer is shifting to young adults in the age group of 31 to 40 years. In contrast, earlier it affected older people above the age of 50.

Colon cancer, also called colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that affects the large intestine or rectum. It is a highly treatable and often curable disease when localised to the bowel.

It can cause symptoms like rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, and abdominal pain, and may spread to other organs if untreated.

“Colorectal cancer is on the rise among young adults under 50 years of age. This is because of factors like obesity, physical inactivity, and smoking. Paul Alexander, who spent the vast majority of the past 70 years in an iron lung and defied expectations by becoming a lawyer and author, died Monday afternoon at the age of 78, according to his brother Philip Alexander.

His death was announced Tuesday on a GoFundMe page set up to help pay for his housing and health care.

“It is absolutely incredible to read all the comments and know that so many people were inspired by Paul. I am just so grateful,” Philip said on the GoFundMe page.

The exact cause of Paul’s death is unclear. He was admitted to the hospital three weeks ago due to a Covid-19 infection but was no longer testing positive this week, Philip said.

“Paul, you will be missed but always remembered. Thanks for sharing your story with us,” Christopher Ulmer, organizer of the GoFundMe fundraiser, said on the page.

Paul developed polio in the

summer of 1952, at the age of 6. It was the height of the polio epidemic; more than 21,000 paralytic polio cases were recorded that year in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Today, polio is considered eliminated in the United States thanks to vaccines that were developed in the late 1950s, according to the CDC.

The disease left Paul paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own. He was placed in an iron lung, a large metal cylinder that varies air pressure to stimulate breathing, according to his autobiography.

“The doctors told us Paul could not possibly live,” Doris Alexander, Paul’s mother, said in his autobiography. “There were a few times when the electrical power failed and then the lung had to be pumped by hand. Our neighbors would run over and help us pump it.”

Alcohol consumption, diabetes, and environmental factors such as exposure to certain toxins or pollution may also contribute to the development of the disease.

The treatment plan will differ from one individual to another and will be decided by the treating doctor. It is essential to follow the guidelines given by the doctor for tackling cancer and improving the quality of life.

However, raising awareness and adhering to preventive measures is the need of the hour.

Dr Amruth Raj said that early detection through regular screenings and encouraging lifestyle modifications such as eating a nutritious diet, exercising, and avoiding processed foods reduce the risk of colorectal cancer in young people. (India Today)

Polio left Paul Alexander paralysed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own

in an iron lung. In March 2023, he was declared the longest surviving iron lung patient in the world by the Guinness World Records.

Paul’s ambitions were not limited by his condition. He learned breathing techniques that allowed him to leave the iron lung for a few hours at a time. He graduated

college, earned a law degree and went on to practice as a courtroom attorney for 30 years. He also self-published his autobiography, “Three Minutes for a Dog: My Life in an Iron Lung,” titled after the accomplishment of learning how to breathe independently for at least three

minutes – a feat that took him a year to master and was rewarded with a dog, according to the book.

Paul told CNN in 2022 that he was working on a second book. He demonstrated his writing process, using a pen attached to a plastic stick held in his mouth to tap keys on a keyboard.

The English Football League says the Premier League’s failure to reach a decision on a ‘New Deal’ for the league’s funding is a “setback”.

It comes after a meeting on Monday between Premier League clubs ended without an agreement.

The EFL says action from football’s Independent Regulator is “more important than ever”.

It added it is “disappointed” at the league’s “repeated failure” to put forward a new offer.

“Whilst it [a new funding offer]

has been expected on a number of occasions, the lack of positive progress once again demonstrates how difficult an issue this is for football to address, without independent input,” the EFL’s statement said.

“The latest development represents a further setback, and the League now awaits a formal update from the Premier League as to how it proposes to re-engage on its latest commitment to deliver ‘a sustainably funded financial agreement with the EFL’.”

Former UFC star Coleman ‘battling for his life’ after saving parents from house fire

Former UFC star Mark Coleman is “battling for his life” after saving his parents from a house fire in Ohio on Tuesday, his daughter said on Instagram.

Morgan Coleman wrote that her father went back and forth into the house and was able to carry both of his parents from the fire and save their lives, before attempting to rescue a dog, Hammer, from the blaze.

CNN has reached out to the Toledo Police, Fire Department and Coleman’s manager for comment for more details about the house fire and the former UFC fighter’s condition.

Morgan said that the former MMA star was airlifted to a hospital where he is “currently battling for his life after this heroic act.” She also said that Hammer passed away despite Coleman’s best efforts.

Oliver Bearman wants to fulfil a “childhood dream” by earning a Formula 1 seat next year after making his debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old became the youngest Briton to start a grand prix when he was called up by Ferrari to replace Carlos Sainz, who had appendicitis.

Bearman finished ahead of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

“Getting a taste of this amazing world... I know what I’m missing out on up there in F1,” Bearman said.

Russian figure skater given 56 medications and supplements over two years

Kamila Valieva was given 56 medications, nutritional and dietary supplements, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has revealed.

They were given to Valieva over a two-year period from January 2020 to December 2021, when she was aged 13-15.

None of the substances are on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (Wada) banned list.

Valieva, 17, was given a fouryear ban for doping by Cas in January.

She tested positive for banned heart medication trimetazidine in December 2021, shortly before competing in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Cas has released a document, external on the other medications and supplements, which were prescribed by the Russian federal medical and biological agency (FMBA), specifically Dr Adamov, Dr Shumakov and Dr Shvetskiy. A Russian Anti-Doping Agency (Rusada) investigation found the teenager bore “no fault or

negligence” for a failed test on 25 December 2021, before Cas upheld an appeal by Wada in January.

“The doping of children is unforgivable,” Wada said in response.

Speaking on Tuesday, Wada’s director general Olivier Niggli said:, external “It is clear that the taste of this case is very unpleasant when you see that there was a choice made to sacrifice an athlete rather than indicating who actually helped her dope.”

Valieva became an instant global star as the first female skater to land a quadruple jump at a Winter Olympics.

Russia won gold in the team figure skating event on 7 February 2022, but it was announced four days later that Valieva had failed a drugs test before the Games. Her ban was backdated to the date she took the failed test, which Valieva claimed could have been caused by a strawberry dessert prepared by her grandfather on the same chopping board he used to crush his pills.

Kansas City Current: NWSL team launch first bespoke women’s football stadium

Kansas City Current will begin the new NWSL season on Saturday at the first bespoke women’s football stadium.

They host Portland Thorns in the first game at CPKC Stadium, which holds 11,500 spectators.

Co-owned by NFL star Patrick Mahomes, KC Current believe the move can be a seminal moment for women’s football across the globe.

“We are the first and we won’t be the last,” said co-owner Angie Long.

“I’d like to know what major successful sports franchise in the world is just happy to sit back and be a tenant in somebody else’s stadium.

“Every time one team levels up, the expectations of the players become that they deserve this - it begins to feel like the new norm.

“For too long, many female athletes are used to the norm of being second and we can set the role model that they aren’t and that can change [the] perspective.”

Angie and co-owners Chris Long and Brittany Mahomes - wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick - announced plans for the construction of the $117m arena in 2021.

It was to be the first stadium purpose-built for a team in the NWSL - the top tier of women’s football in the United States.

“World-class facilities have proven to be a catalyst in transforming all professional sports,” said Angie Long upon the announcement.

Darren Gough: Ex-England paceman steps down as Yorkshire managing director of cricket

Former England fast bowler Darren Gough has stepped down as managing director of cricket at Yorkshire.

Gough, who played for Yorkshire for 15 years, took the role in December 2021 replacing Martyn Moxon.

The 53-year-old had to negotiate the county through the fall-out from the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal, which saw 16 people leave the club at the end of 2021, including Moxon.

“It’s been an absolute honour to work for my boyhood club,” Gough said.

Women’s football has

transformed across the globe in recent years, with Women’s Super League teams regularly playing to big crowds in stadiums that were previously the preserve of men’s teams, and England’s Lionesses winning Euro 2022 at a packed-out Wembley.

Just last month, Arsenal hosted Manchester United at Emirates Stadium in front of a WSL record 60,160 crowd, as visibility and popularity continue to grow.

There is expected to be further progress to come, with a number

of women’s sides in England currently sharing grounds with men’s EFL and non-league sides.

In 2023, Brighton and Hove City Council voted to build a new stadium for Brighton’s women’s team, which will be the first of its kind in England.

KC Current’s Chris Long says it is “common sense” to give female athletes the same elite facilities as men, and he considers the CPKC Stadium as just the start for women’s football teams across the world.

Gough’s initial arrival was on an interim basis, followed by a permanent appointment in November 2022.

He said “rebuilding the club” and “rebuilding trust in the county’s management” were his main aims.

He was involved in the appointment of new staff such as Ottis Gibson as head coach, the overhaul of the men’s squad, and also the continued development of the women’s game notably in the shape of Hundred side Northern Diamonds.

“The contribution he has made to stabilise the club and drive our playing squads forward has been critical and, I know that, as a Yorkshireman who lives and breathes this club, he has been so proud to carry out the role,” chief executive Stephen Vaughan said.

The GBCR Islanders and the Temple Financial Panthers bounced back from losses at the end of the regular season, to dominate the playoffs of the Provo Hockey League (PHL), which concluded last Saturday at the Graceway Sport Centre.

The L’Heureux Canadiens were also clinical in the playoffs with two wins in a three-team battle.

With the results, the Islanders topped the Novice Division with nine points and will meet the Saunders and Co Greyhounds (six points) in the final.

A solid bowling performance from Omar’s propelled the side to a 38-run victory when they played Kishco in the latest round of the TCICA Cricket Competition on Sunday at the Downtown Ball Park.

Omar’s won the toss and elected to bat. They managed to score 147 before they were bowled out in 16.4 overs.

Opening batsman, Delovan Hardware led the attack with 31 runs from 25 balls (7x4s), while Ian Heath, batting at seven, supported with 21.

Bowling for Kishco, Mario Smith, who got the prize wicket of Hardware, bowled and caught, led the attack with 3-23 from four overs, while Narendra Seecharan was equally impressive as he picked up 3-18 from two overs.

Yogesh Khude supported with 2-21 from 2.4 overs.

In reply, the Kishco batsmen never settled as all five bowlers, including Hardware finished with two wickets each.

Khude showed some fight in the middle with 30 from 28 (5X4s), but he was undone by Hardware.

In the end, the side fell for 109 all out in 18.2 overs.

On Sunday, the competition continues with a doubleheader. Police will battle Jaguars at 1:30pm, before Omar’s and Beaches play a day and night encounter from 4:30pm.
