TCI nominated in world category of World Travel Awards
The Turks and Caicos Islands has been nominated for three awards in the world category of the World Travel Award, set to be announced this November.
The island destination is nominated for World’s Leading Beach Destination, World’s Leading Romance Destination and World’s Leading Island Destination.
Compliance
The Border Force has increased its compliance checks, recently cracking down on three highrisk commercial importers and recovering over $360,000 in unpaid customs duties and fees.
In a statement on Thursday, October 10, the department said they are sending a clear message to those who attempt to skirt customs regulations.
These stricter measures not only ensure the accurate collection of customs duties and fees, preventing fraudulent activities like undervaluation or misclassification but also level the playing field for legitimate businesses and protect
In July, the Turks and Caicos Islands won the Caribbean’s Leading Romance Destination and the Caribbean’s Leading Beach Destination in the regional category of the World Travel Awards.
Minister of Tourism, the Hon Josephine Connolly said the latest nomination for the destination is further testimony to the lasting
imprint the territory has left on those who visit either as repeat or first-time visitors.
“With our 2024 arrival numbers surpassing those of 2023 in every month, there are more and more people experiencing the unparalleled beauty, culture, cuisine and diverse range of experiences our collection of islands has to offer,” she said.
The minister said the nominations are particularly important as it positions the TCI not just with the Caribbean but the entire world.
“These are the highest in the World Travel Awards programme and it would be a great honour to win so please vote, vote vote,” she encouraged.
Voting for the World Travel
Awards runs until October 20, and votes can be cast by travel professionals, media and tourism consumers, with the nominee gaining the most votes in each category announced as the 2024 World Travel Awards winner. Winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on November 28, in Madeira, Portugal.

Seymour is also reminding the public that submitting false declarations to the Border Force when importing goods can have severe consequences.
In addition to paying unpaid duties and overpayments, importers may face seizure of goods, fines of up to $20,000, and imprisonment for up to two years. This applies to both
paper and electronic submissions.
The public is further advised that the importation of controlled substances, firearms, offensive weapons, indecent materials, and certain plant, food, or animal products can result in fines up to $50,000 and/or imprisonment.
The Border Force plays a crucial role in ensuring a fair and secure trading environment.
By working closely with brokers
and importers, the department is fostering a culture of voluntary compliance and building trust within the trade community. They are also investing in training and resources to help customs brokers and importers understand and meet their obligations, minimising disruptions, streamlining processes, and preventing delays due to non-compliance.
Assets of criminals targeted
– as House of Assembly passes Anti-Gang
In a powerful response to the escalating threat of organised crime, the Turks and Caicos Islands House of Assembly has passed the Anti-Gang Amendment Bill 2024 aimed at targeting the assets and finances of criminal gangs.
This landmark legislation, which received spirited debate before its recent passage, aims to dismantle criminal networks by targeting both individuals and the legal entities they often exploit.
Attorney General Hon Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles, spearheaded the bill’s introduction, emphasising its importance in closing legal loopholes.
“The anti-gang bill seeks to amend the existing Anti-Gang Ordinance to address deficiencies... and establish the liability of legal persons for offences under the ordinance,” she stated.
This amendment directly targets the use of companies, charities, and other associations as shields for illicit activities.
Elaborating on the provisions of the bill, the Attorney General said that the bill would ensure that persons involved in organised crime in respect of their gang activities cannot further the cause of their gangs. She said that without the bill, it’s easy for them to use the funds to form companies, “to hold property, to hold jewellery, to hold money in a bank account, to own cars, to purchase land” to further gang activities. With the bill, she said criminals “don’t have any place to hide”, not behind the company,
not behind the corporate legal entity and not behind another person.
Braithwaite-Knowles highlighted the challenges law enforcement face in combating organised crime, stating, “This poses serious challenges to law enforcement efforts...the liability of legal persons for offenses covered by the organised crime convention is mandatory.”
She further explained that the bill allows for the prosecution of both individuals and the corporate entities they use to conceal their assets and operations, leaving “no place to hide”.
Member of Parliament for Leeward and Long Bay, Hon Akierra Missick, underscored the bill’s implications for those who attempt to legitimise their illgotten gains.
“If the gains you have through unlawful activity have been funded, funnelled, invested in a company for which you have some sort of executive management oversight... the assets of that company can be forfeited,” she declared.
Missick emphasised that this amendment sends a clear message to those involved in organised crime:
“Use a company to do your dirty work...and the police find out and they could trace you back to the company; the company, whatever the company owns, pivoted and given to the men.”
Minister of Education and Youth, the Hon Rachel Taylor, framed the legislation as a critical response to the societal impact of gang activity.
“We as a government, must be seen to be doing something,” she asserted, highlighting the alarming recruitment of young people into gangs.
Taylor expressed hope that the bill’s provisions, which include the possibility of mitigated punishment for those who cooperate with law enforcement, will encourage individuals to disengage from criminal networks.
“They now have an opportunity to come forward as we work together as a community, as a country, so that we can dismantle the gangs that are destroying the lives within our communities,” she urged.
Amendment Bill
The passage of the Anti-Gang Amendment Bill 2024 marks a significant step in the Turks and Caicos Islands’ fight against organised crime. By targeting the financial infrastructure of gangs and offering a potential pathway for those who wish to live a life of crime, the government is sending a strong message that gang activity will not be tolerated.
As the nation observed Youth Week, the focus on dismantling gangs and providing opportunities for young people serves as a poignant reminder of the stakes involved and the importance of community collaboration in
building a safer future.
The Bill was part of a suite of Bills aimed at dismantling criminal networks across the territory which includes the Control of Drugs Amendment Bill 2024 which seeks to bolster existing drug laws by introducing harsher penalties for offenses committed near schools, educational institutions, and social service facilities and the Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2024 which seeks to offer immunity or reduced sentences to individuals who cooperate with authorities and provide crucial information on criminal activities.
TCI’s 37th murder was a vicious targeted attack
Thirty-six-year-old Lewis Francis Jr is the country’s 37 homicide to date, having been shot multiple times about his body by an unknown assailant.
Police related that they responded to a 911 call about midnight on Wednesday (October 9), of gunshots being heard in the Lower Bight community.
A team of officers and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene where they encountered Francis’
bullet-riddled and lifeless body lying on the ground.
Another man was wounded in the vicious attack; however, he fled the scene and police was later alerted to his presence at a residence in the Bight at about 1:27am.
The 38-year-old man (name not provided) was rushed to the hospital by police and is receiving medical attention.
Reports are that Francis was the target of the attack, as his
body was riddled with bullets, causing him to succumb to his injuries at the scene of the crime.
Police said their investigations are continuing, urging anyone with information to notify the closest police station, contact 911, the Serious Crime Unit at 231-1842, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 or the Crime Stoppers P3 app to anonymously provide any information on the above incidents.
ASYLUM
The government is seeking to provide comprehensive legislation establishing various guidelines for persons seeking asylum in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the internal procedures dictating such requests.
On September 26, the Asylum Bill 2024 was read for the second time in the House of Assembly, making way for a debate on its contents and changes in the Committee of Supply.
The six-part Bill is looking to establish an eligibility committee, streamline the application and review process, map out the appeal process for refusal, deportation or departure of refugees and several other miscellaneous guidelines.
At the end of the day, following rousing debate and significant protests from the opposition benches, the bill made its way to the committee of the whole for amendments, where it remains before passage.
However, the Bill is said to be “rushed legislation” by Leader of the PDM Opposition, Hon Edwin Astwood, whose party members staged a protest outside of the Premier’s Office on Wednesday, October 2.
The party is contending that the United Kingdom is forcing the TCI’s hand in exchange for the grant of proposed constitutional changes, a point strongly ventilated by Astwood this week.
What are your thoughts?
A crazy notion
What a crazy idea, the UK isn’t going to force this on us. If we don’t do this they have other ways to deal with the problem. Astwood needs better advisors, now.
Ship the refugees to the UK
Remarks from the PDM opposition and its leader highlight the reason/issues at hand. “The asylum process requires immense resources—legal, financial, and administrative—to function fairly and efficiently. For a small island nation like Turks and Caicos, where the immigration system is already overwhelmed by illegal migration, the introduction of such a bill without careful planning will only worsen an already difficult situation.”
This is where the government should be. It is the British government for centuries
A curious but ominous question arises about the manner in which the Bill was presented and the concerted attack on the few Opposition MPs in the wake of presenting the Bill and seeking to defend it. If the proposed amendments to the Immigration Ordinance Provisions on Asylum were so “good” why attack the Opposition for seeking clarification, opposing the Bill, Forcing amendments to it and demanding that the government bring the Bill to the People?
Forces from the PNP allegedly moved to doctor a video clip of the Hon Alvin Garland, where his presentation spoke to general international obligations of the UK and the TCI, to make it look as if he supported the Bill.
not politics when it comes to issues of a serious nature.
Cosmetic changes
During the 2012-2016 PNP government, the Immigration Ordinance was amended to provide for Asylum relief to persons coming to the Turks & Caicos Islands.
The Immigration Ordinance 2015, provided for adherence to a Refugee Convention which is now coming back to haunt the people of the Turks & Caicos Islands. It created a blanket regime for asylum seekers and no provision was made in that law for illegal or legal migrants.
that has treated these islands and the Caribbean as a trading post. It is time for the Government of the TCI to send the message.
“We will not pass this Bill.”!!!!
Basically what they need to do is address the ‘immense legal and financial issues” arising as the leader of the Opposition has stated. Bring a Bill that would designate the UK, Great Britain as the most reasonable place for refugees.
Ensure that there are provisions that would enable the Government to ship refugees to the UK and have the UK pay for this. It cannot be the TCI. Where the UK are pushing the law, let them pay for it.
More questions than answers
This Asylum Bill as presented by the government creates more questions than it does answers for the people. Yet petty, primitive and backward politics emerge in light of this most serious Bill.
This is a new level of US Republican party and Democratic party dirty tricks. They have followed the US well and learnt a lot from their chicanery.
It would have been a great form of Representation for the PNP to have published the Bill in local media, print, TV, social media, and videos on “Why”, “God Forbid” this Bill as crafted was so good for the TCI. Usually when a government is doing something good for the people, they share the blame for that good to themselves. They do not want it seen that the Opposition had a hand in passing a good law.
These acts show in and of themselves that this law was bad for the people. What the MPs, backbenchers could do to show good faith to the people to vote against it. In sum, if the Hon Alvin Garland did not come forward and deny his support for the Bill, then most persons would have believed that he supported it.
This is reckless and irresponsible on the part of the Government on a matter so serious as this Bill as it clearly presents an existential threat to our people. A fair and balanced party leader would have denied the social media tirade of His MPs and chastised them for misleading the public on this vital issue. Sometimes it is
One can be assured that this was a law being pushed on the then PNP government as they are doing now, but there is no pushback from the PNP, except the public speakers. The Hon Devon Williams, an “independent voice crying in the wilderness” and others and the PDM Opposition.
Arrangements were in the 2015 Immigration law to enable applicants to remain in the Islands while their applications were being processed. In the new law applications may now be made to the most “reasonable place”. Even though it ‘makes no sense’ TCI may be deemed to be a reasonable place to enter on the grounds of asylum. Instead of a Governor making the
decision, it will be a panel.
The changes are not new. In a recent case, regarding the Sri Lankans on this issue, it was ruled that the Director of Immigration had “no power to grant the Applicants, as asylum seekers, permission to engage in gainful occupation in the absence of legislative authority”. Then we have Article 31 of the Refugee Convention, dealing with Refugees unlawfully in the country of refuge. The Refugee Convention of 1954 provides that the TCI will not impose penalties on asylum seekers based on illegal entry.
“The Contracting States shall not impose penalties, on account of their illegal entry or presence, on refugees who, coming directly from a territory where their life or freedom was threatened in the sense of the convention. enter or are present in their territory without authorisation, provided they present themselves without delay to the authorities and show good cause for their illegal entry or presence.”
It will mean that as long as TCI is under the UK, it will have to follow laws and treaties imposed on the TCI by the UK Matters such as maintaining them, feeding them, giving them pocket money to a new country, giving them jobs while here, will fall on the TCI Government. This Government had a duty to inform the people of these issues. They are huge, deep, far-reaching, etc.
Need for public consultation
The PDM Opposition conducted a demonstration in front of the Premier’s office. Speakers spoke to some serious constitutional issues on the matter. The Hon Ralph Higgs, PDM at large candidate stated that the Governor should not assent to the Bill until it is fully taken to the people, the issues relating to the Bill are fully canvassed by the public and they know what is going on in their country.
The Hon Higgs went further and asserted that for her Excellency to assent to the Bill before it is presented to the people, then she would be in breach of her constitutional duties to the people and complicit with the Government in flouting the very requirements of the Constitution that on serious matters, there “must be public consultation.”
Continued
Other speakers such as former Minister of Education and Health, the Hon Clarence Selver spoke powerfully to the matter of a need in 2024 for national unity in the TCI. The Hon Selver spoke to a national unity demonstration in 1995 when it was time to deal with and get rid of former Governor Bourke. Both PDM and PNP came together in in one united force to deal with that issue and came together in 2011-12 to Unite to demand the return of the current Constitution.
The Hon Selver spoke to issues arising from the Bill where the TCIslanders would be obliged to give the asylum seekers money where they were sent to another country. He compared how TCIslanders who accompany their families today for medical reasons are given a mere paltry $200 for the entire trip.
Then in what amounted to a change of pace the sitting of the House where the Bill was to return was cancelled. The PDM of course claimed a “tour de force” and credit for the cancellation of the house sitting. Whatever the reason the Bill should not be passed until there is public consultation.
Illegals are illegals
Nowhere in the Bill did the minister, the PNP government or any of the 14+1 MPs ever put a provision in there that if one is illegally in the Islands one is not allowed to apply for Asylum. That restriction is not in the Law. In the wake of the demonstration the PDM leader, the Hon Edwin Astwood, stated in a release, that “the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) strongly opposes the advancement of the asylum bill by the current government, as it continues a troubling pattern of disregarding the democratic process. Once again, this PNP government is pushing through legislation of significant national consequence without proper consultation with the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands”.
He further stated that “It is alarming that this Bill has not been shared with you, the people, for consultation or feedback. We live in a democracy, and it is our duty to ensure that every voice is heard before enacting such legislation that could profoundly impact our society.”
New deputy commissioner sworn in amidst temporary leadership shake-up
In a significant move aimed at bolstering leadership and expertise, Mr Fitz Bailey was officially sworn in as Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) on October 7th.
The ceremony, held at Police Headquarters in Providenciales and presided over by the Governor, HE Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam, marks a pivotal moment for the RTCIPF as it navigates a period of transition.
Mr Bailey’s appointment, set for an initial three months, comes as Commissioner of Police Edvin Martin proceeds on a sixweek leave, triggering a series of temporary leadership changes within the Force.
During this period, Deputy Commissioner (DCP) Rodney Adams will serve as Acting Commissioner until October 6th, followed by Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Kendall Grant.
The swearing-in of Mr Bailey,
a seasoned veteran with over 40 years of experience in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), is expected to bring a wealth of knowledge and strategic insight to the RTCIPF. His impressive resume includes senior roles in critical areas such as the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), the Intelligence Branch, and the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC).
Mr Bailey, who holds advanced degrees in Psychology, Criminal Investigation, and National Security, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to serve the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. “I am honoured to join the RTCIPF and contribute to its mission of upholding law and order,” he said. “I look forward to working alongside the dedicated men and women of the Force to address the challenges ahead and build a safer and more secure
future for all.”
The new Deputy Commissioner’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance the RTCIPF’s leadership capacity and operational effectiveness. His expertise in areas such as criminal investigation, intelligence, and counter-terrorism is expected to be instrumental in tackling the complex security challenges facing the islands.
Commissioner Martin, in a statement released prior to his leave, expressed confidence in the acting arrangements and the Force’s ability to maintain its strategic objectives during his absence.
“Commissioner Martin stated: “Acting arrangements have been put in place to cover the period of my absence.
“The Force Executive has been fully briefed and will continue to focus on the welfare of all staff,” he assured.
Govt launches public consultations on critical constitutional reforms
The government of the Turks and Caicos Islands is currently spearheading a series of public consultations to gather crucial feedback from residents across the Turks and Caicos Islands on the draft amendments to the 2024 Constitution.
The public consultations began on the island of Salt Cay on Monday 7th, October 2024.
These consultations provide citizens with the opportunity to review and give feedback on the proposed changes aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring the Constitution reflects the needs of the people.
The proposed changes, which have ignited both anticipation and apprehension, encompass a wide
range of critical areas such as governance, accountability, and the balance of power, have been met with a mixture of support and scepticism from various stakeholders.
The government’s initiative to modernise the Constitution, a process that began in April 2019, has culminated in this draft legislation, which reflects extensive research, stakeholder engagement, and public input.
However, the path to constitutional reform has been far from smooth, with contentious issues such as the role of the Governor, the composition of the House of Assembly, and the relationship between the TCI and the UK governments at the
Local authorities
captured 1,142 fleeing Haitians to date in 2024
BY DELANA ISLES
Police reported this week that as of October 8, they have intercepted and detained 1,142 illegal migrants seeking entry into the Turks and Caicos Islands onboard sloops.
This figure is far below that of 2023, for the same period - 4016.
There have been 15 interceptions so far with 947 men, 195 women and 24 children making the perilous journey from the war-torn Haiti to the TCI.
While the figure reported by police is significant, over the past few months, residents have alerted police and the public to the presence
of what appeared to be illegals roaming through communities, a few of whom were captured, and later confirmed to have arrived onboard illegals vessels that were not detected by the radar.
Those not captured had successfully penetrated local communities, and that figure is unknown to authorities.
Meanwhile, in their latest interception on Tuesday, October 8, police responded to a report from the Radar Station of a suspicious vessel near Bird Rock in the Leeward Settlement community of Providenciales. At about 1:28 am officers
forefront of discussions.
Among the most significant proposed amendments is the renaming of the House of Assembly to Parliament, a change that symbolises a shift towards greater autonomy and self-governance. Additionally, the draft legislation seeks to extend the maximum parliamentary term from four to five years, a move that has drawn criticism from those who fear an erosion of democratic checks and balances.
Another contentious proposal is the abolition of appointed members of Parliament, with the exception of the Attorney General. This change, while welcomed by proponents of a more representative legislature, has raised concerns about the
potential for political polarisation and the exclusion of minority voices.
The draft amendments also address the delicate balance of power between the TCI government and the UK government, particularly in the realm of external affairs. While the proposed changes aim to clarify and delineate the responsibilities of each entity, critics argue that they fall short of granting the TCI full control over its international relations.
As the public consultations get underway, citizens across the islands are being encouraged to participate in the process and voice their opinions on the proposed amendments.
The government has scheduled meetings in all major islands, including Salt Cay, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, Providenciales, Grand Turk, and South Caicos, to ensure that all voices are heard.
The release of the Draft Amendments to the 2024 Constitution marks a pivotal moment in the history of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The outcome of the public consultations and the subsequent debate in the House of Assembly will determine the future direction of the territory and its relationship with the UK.
The stakes are high, and the eyes of the nation are on the government as it navigates this complex and challenging process.
onboard the Sea Pursuit intercepted a 34-foot grey Panga fiberglass boat with a 250hp Yamaha engine, transporting 32 illegal migrants - two females and 30 males, suspected to be of Haitian descent. The migrants were handed over to the Immigration Task Force for processing. The Border Force, TCI Regiment, and TCI Customs participated in the operation.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Mat Newton said in the past six months their radar capabilities have expanded, that along with the collaboration and coordination with the Border Force and TCI Regiment, as well as air and marine assets from the United States and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, the force has been better able to intercept and detain.
“We will continue to work closely with national and international allies to deter people from making these perilous journeys and target the gangs who facilitate the illegal trade.

Commercial land can now be used for affordable, social and emergency use
– Crown Land Ordinance amendments passed
BY DELANA ISLES
The House of Assembly has passed a few significant amendments to the Crown Land Ordinance allowing commercial land to be used for affordable, social and emergency housing.
Moving the Crown Land Amendment Bill 2024 in the Assembly on September 26 was the Hon Attorney General Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles.
The amendments to the Ordinance further bolster the government’s national housing policy which followed close on the heels of the 2022 Crown Land review.
Last year, the long-awaited National Housing Policy aimed at fostering homeownership and addressing the need for quality and affordable housing in the TCI was approved by the Cabinet.
The intent of the new housing
policy is to address housing challenges that have beleaguered the territory in recent years in a more strategic manner.
The bill substitutes the definition of commercial development in the principal Ordinance with the following new meaning: “Commercial development means any development which is not for private residential or agricultural purposes and includes the use of land by a developer for the building on one parcel of more than one residence for sale or lease to individuals for private residential purposes, such as the creation of affordable housing, social housing, or emergency housing”.
Another amendment in the Bill lays out the definitions of the new insertions to the Ordinance.
Affordable housing is defined as housing that does not exceed 30% of a household’s or individual’s gross monthly income; emergency
housing means housing for which the primary purpose is to provide temporary accommodations for individuals or families who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless.
Social housing means housing options provided by the government or non-profit organisations at a low or subsidised cost, primarily aimed at assisting individuals and families who are unable to afford market-rate housing due to their income levels.
The Attorney General said the provisions are necessary as the territory is suffering from a housing shortage, and that it enables the government’s housing policy to undertake initiatives to increase housing in the islands.
“So, the housing policy and these amendments allow for the use of crown land to increase the housing stock,” she explained.
Another amendment to the
Ordinance sees the substitution of ‘allocation of commercial land’ to ‘allocation of Crown land for commercial development’.
It outlines: “Except as provided in subsection (1A), Crown land suitable for commercial development may not be sold, but the Governor may dispose of an interest in or over such land by means of a long lease, a licence or an easement.
“Crown land suitable for commercial development may be sold if the land is being used for the development of affordable housing, social housing or emergency housing.”
The following rules apply to the sale of Crown land for commercial development: “The allocation will be undertaken through a transparent and public competitive process, the successful bidder must enter into a restrictive agreement which restricts the
allowable development on the land to affordable housing, social housing and emergency housing, the allocation is subject to a performance bond to guarantee satisfactory completion of a project by the successful bidder.
“And the successful bidder will be eligible to receive a 50% discount on the freehold purchase price, which must be passed on to the purchaser.”
The Bill further outlines that no discount will be granted on Crown land for commercial development, unless the land is being utilised for affordable housing, social housing or emergency housing development, in which case a 50% discount off the market value of the land will be applicable.
The bill was passed with unanimous support in the House, with the opposition-appointed member, Hon Alvin Garland calling it “a good initiative”.
Public consultation commences on landmark Renewable Energy Bill
In the wake of escalating electricity bills that have sent shockwaves through households and businesses across the Turks and Caicos Islands, the government is rolling out a major initiative in an effort to harness renewable energy sources and stabilise energy costs.
The centrepiece of this effort is the Renewable Energy and Resource Planning Bill 2023, a comprehensive piece of legislation that is now open for public consultation.
This Bill is a crucial component of the nation’s ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on foreign fossil fuels, stabilise energy prices, and create a more resilient energy system for all citizens.
The Energy and Utilities Department (EUD) is spearheading a series of public meetings and engagement initiatives, urging residents to actively participate in shaping the country’s energy future.
The urgency of this initiative is underscored by the recent announcement of increased energy fuel charges by the Public Electricity Supplier, a development that has hit consumers hard.
“Many households and businesses across the Turks and Caicos Islands are seeing
Energy and Utilities Commissioner, Delano R. Arthur
notably higher electricity bills”, a statement from the government said on Monday, October 7, 2024.
“Recognising the impact this has on our community, the government is taking proactive steps to lessen our vulnerability to these market changes. The Renewable Energy Bill will play a central role in these efforts by creating the legal framework necessary to develop, regulate and expand the use of renewable energy sources in the
islands, including solar and wind power”, the Energy and Utilities Commissioner, Delano R. Arthur emphasised in a recent statement.
“The Renewable Energy Bill represents a long-term solution for the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Commissioner Arthur stressed.
“By harnessing our abundant renewable energy resources, we will not only reduce our reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels but also protect consumers from
the volatility of global oil prices and monopolistic markets.”
THE PROPOSED BILL AIMS TO TACKLE THE ROOT CAUSES OF THE ENERGY
CRISIS BY:
1. Reduced Dependency on Imported Fossil Fuels: By facilitating the production and use of renewable energy, the Bill aims to drastically reduce our dependence on foreign oil,
making our energy system more self-sufficient.
2. Stabilisation of Energy Prices: As oil prices rise and fall unpredictably, electricity costs fluctuate accordingly. With a greater reliance on locallyproduced renewable energy, the Turks and Caicos Islands will be less exposed to these price changes, helping to keep energy costs more stable over the long term.
3. Environmental Sustainability: The Bill encourages investment in clean energy solutions such as solar and wind, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and protect our environment for future generations.
4. Long-term Energy Cost Reduction: While initial investments in renewable infrastructure are necessary, renewable energy production becomes cheaper over time compared to conventional energy sources. This transition will ultimately lower the cost of energy generation, benefiting consumers across the nation. The government is actively encouraging both local and international investments in

Socio-economic impact of public transportation in Providenciales
how commuters are set to benefit
Providenciales, once a flat desolate, and sparsely populated landscape, where economic activities were at bare minimum, has since undergone a remarkable transformation. Still, nature is not the only force that has left its indelible impression, so has modernism.
Since then, the paradigm has shifted and the economy accelerated, and now, Providenciales has metamorphosed into a prosperous small island city.
Too, its aesthetic appeal has lured international investors and today, a myriad of world-class accommodations has swamped Providenciales shorelines.
Yet, in the face of modernity and development TCI lawmakers are still grappling to bridge the gap between citizens and socioeconomic activity. As the status quo indicates the public is left to fend for themselves.
So, we ask, how do we cope with this seismic shift? How does TCI’s society thrive in such a fastpaced environment, where there is

limited connectivity? And why is the government demonstrating a sense of inertia when productivity demands efficient movement of the labour force?
As we know, more than half of TCI’s population lives in Provo and that number is growing, owing to the rapid development of hotels, Airbnb, and other luxury accommodations.
In any city, public transport is a rudimentary and requisite public service. And while some cities have successfully acquired international recognition for state-of-the-art public transport infrastructure with worldclass operations, the TCI has
yet to achieve such target – forcing the public to invest in private vehicles and solicit unregulated transportation.
Henceforth, bus services are crucial in Providenciales to connecting people, communities and businesses; therefore, it is important to explore its significance in modern society and the impacts. By extension, this system serves as a lifeline to commuters – allowing those with limited mobility or financial constraints to actively participate in society. And in the absence of a private car, it provides them with a reliable mode of transportation to work,
healthcare facilities, schools and to access other primary services.
Connecting a wider group of prospective employees and customers to businesses and institutions would stimulate economic growth and development within Providenciales.
Additionally, dependable transportation appeals to investors – both local and foreign – and leads to the development of rural communities and the growth of the national economy.
This efficiency will propel social equity within our society and an affordable and inclusive mode of transport permits people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to access job opportunities, education and other social resources.
Simultaneously, using public bus services promise to alleviate traffic congestion on Leeward Highway and other major roads; hence, reducing the number of privately own vehicles.
And considering its land size
and small population, a public transportation system designed for Providenciales is not so complex.
Foremost, the government’s role in transport operation is limited; however, it requires clever government regulations along with robust and functional private companies.
More so, public transport provision requires considerable organization undertakings, meticulous planning, public funding and cooperation from passengers to make it work.
However, to acquire smoother traffic flow, careful planning of bus routes to enhance overall mobility is important; coupled with, the integration of technology to improve efficiency and convenience.
As Provo continues to grow, and its society evolves funding and prioritizing structured and well-organized transport services are critical for establishing overall, sustainable and thriving communities.

Imagine this, you worked hard all your life and was able to save some money and you put all your savings in one financial institution and unfortunately, that institution collapsed.
The institution did not have depositors’ insurance and furthermore, the institution was in a bankrupt state and could not pay you anything and as a result, you lost all your savings.
You could have alleviated or reduced the losses if you did not put all your resources in one basket. To counteract the example above, you should diversify and spread out your savings among multiple unrelated financial institutions so that if one fails, at least you will have resources in other financial institutions.
DO NOT PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET

Do not put all your eggs in one basket. It is risky because as demonstrated above, if the basket falls, and all the eggs break, you will have to start all over.
For those of you that have a job, don’t depend solely on that job or that area you work in. Learn other aspects of your company or start a business on the side. Now don’t do the same business as your employer as you should not be competing against your employer.
Furthermore, if there are issues in the industry, at least you will have something else to rely on, Likewise, for those of you who are entrepreneurs, consider diversifying your business or having more than one business. Even if you have one business, offer multiple products or services so if some of the products or services are slowing getting sold, you can have an opportunity to make sales on other products or services.
For those of you who plan to invest, diversify your portfolio. Invest in different types of assets, different industries and even different countries.
Even from a country level, we should not put all our focus on one industry such as Turks and Caicos and many other Caribbean islands where our focus is entirely tourism.
WHY SHOULD YOU DIVERSIFY?
Diversification may cost you more because you will have to pay fees to the different institutions when you can pay one fee at one institution but hopefully, you have concluded and agreed that it is best not to put all your eggs in one basket. It reduces the risk of you losing everything. It is also an opportunity to learn about different industries and in so doing it can lead to growth. The impact of
COVID taught us why we should diversify.
CONCLUSION
While diversification is good, you need to know what you are doing to maximize your returns. If you lack the knowledge, you may end up putting all your eggs in one basket when you think you are putting them in different baskets. You may ask what I mean by that. Well, you may put your resources in different institutions, but those different institutions may be owned by one parent and that one parent may collapse resulting in all the baskets being impacted.
Mind you, there are some people who are doing well without diversification but if you want to be in a safety mode, you should consider diversification even though there is no guarantee your losses will not be alleviated.
The type of church needed in the Turks and Caicos
based on Revelation 2:8 - 11
We continue to see from scripture what type of church is needed in the Turks and Caicos for this season. The role of the church has never been as important as it is now. We are looking at the Book of Revelation, which was a message from Jesus to John, the last surviving apostle, to seven churches in ancient Asia Minor, which today is the nation of Turkey. Here is what Jesus had to say to a church that was meeting in a city called Smyrna.
“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.9 “‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who

has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’
In the passage, Jesus addresses the church in Smyrna, acknowledging their trials, poverty, and the slander they face from the enemy. Despite their struggles, He assures them that they are spiritually rich and calls on them to be fearless in the face of suffering. This message highlights qualities that are essential for churches in TCI today— faithfulness, resilience, and steadfast hope even in adversity, offering both spiritual encouragement and practical support to the community.
THE CHURCH TCI NEEDS: A CHURCH THAT
EMBRACES SUFFERING WITH FAITHFULNESS
Christ’s words to Smyrna remind us that the path of faith is not always one of comfort but one that often includes suffering. The church in TCI must not shy away from the reality of hardships. Many in the community face personal and economic challenges, and the church must provide a space where these struggles are acknowledged. This is not about glorifying suffering, but rather, it’s about meeting people where they are and guiding them to see the strength and hope that faith in Jesus Christ offers.
To fulfill this role, the church must be a place where people feel they can bring their burdens
and find both compassion and encouragement. The message to Smyrna was one of hope, promising a “crown of life” to those who remain faithful unto death. Similarly, TCI needs churches that remind people of the eternal hope that faith provides, encouraging resilience in the face of trials.
The church in Smyrna faced slander and opposition from those who claimed to be religious but were not. Christ describes these opposers as a “synagogue of Satan,” emphasizing the importance of discernment. The church in TCI must be rooted firmly in the truth of the Gospel, and able to distinguish between genuine faith and false teachings.
As society becomes more complex
and religiously becomes more varied, the church must stand as a beacon of unchanging truth. This commitment to truth does not mean the church should be rigid or unwelcoming. Rather, it should be a place where the Gospel is presented in its full power and grace. The type of church TCI needs will balance doctrinal integrity with a warm and inviting spirit, allowing people to explore their relationship with Jesus while being grounded in sound theology.
THE CHURCH TCI NEEDS: A CHURCH THAT OFFERS HOPE IN ETERNAL LIFE
The promise in Revelation 2:11 that “the one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death” speaks to the eternal perspective that the church must offer. TCI needs a church that emphasizes the hope of eternal life. In a world where people are often consumed by the pressures and anxieties of daily life, the church must remind them of the bigger picture—the
Being intentionally intentional
Last week, someone asked me how intentional I was with my life, and it got me thinking.
To be honest, I’m probably about as intentional as a feather in a gushing wind. I have direction, sure—but more often than not, I’m just going with the flow, reacting to what life throws at me. Lately, though, I’ve realized that a lot more intention is necessary. If you’re anything like me, it’s time we adjust the needle, recalibrate, and start narrating your own story.
We all have days that get away from us, filled with distractions and obligations that don’t align with what we want. But being intentional means claiming control.
Here is my gospel to you. Take them and make them yours:
SOMETIMES WE
CAN SAY NO
BY DAVIDSON LOUIS
Rachel Wolchin once said: “If we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have had roots instead of feet.” On this quest to self-discovery, TC Islander Davidson Louis vowed to travel, write, paint, laugh and forgive. Subsequently, he hopes to find himself and or, leave behind a few pieces of himself. Contact him at hello. octopen@tcinews.tc
One thing I’ve learned is that saying “no” can be just as empowering as saying “yes.” Every “yes” we give is a commitment—it’s a piece of us we’re giving away. And every “no” creates space for something better. So, if you’re constantly feeling stretched thin, maybe it’s time to evaluate what you’re saying yes to. Cookie from Empire said it best: “You have to
put yourself first.” And that’s the kind of intentionality we should aim for.
OUR TIME IS PRECIOUS:
I’ve realized that I need to be more deliberate with how I spend it— whether it’s work, relationships, or just taking care of myself. There’s a fine line between being busy and being fulfilled. Filling our schedules isn’t the same as living with purpose. It’s about
choosing fewer things to focus on but doing them with heart and meaning.
YOUR LOVE:
Being intentional with love is also a game changer. Whether it’s with your partner, family, or friends, love is an active choice. It’s about being present, showing appreciation, and building deeper connections. We all know how easy it is to drift through relationships without really being engaged. But when you choose to love intentionally, it transforms everything.
YOUR PEACE:
Protecting my peace has been another area where I’ve had to get more intentional. Life is full of stressors, but not everything deserves a reaction. Creating boundaries and holding space
for my own well-being has become non-negotiable. I’ve learned that peace doesn’t come naturally—it’s something you actively guard.
YOUR FUTURE:
And finally, being intentional with the future means planning for it, not just hoping it falls into place. It’s about making choices today that shape the life we want tomorrow. I used to think dreaming big was enough, but I’ve come to realise that intentional action is what brings those dreams to life.
Please enjoy a weekend, designed around what “you want”. Iyanla Vanzant said it beautifully and I have stolen it. Don’t be selfish, be selfish. Let your cup runneth over, but what’s in it is yours, and what runs out is for you. Thanks Well.
Justice on ice: Breaking the silence on TCI’s cold cases
The need for justice in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) extends far beyond any single tragedy. It’s about confronting a justice system that, time and again, fails to resolve cases that have grown cold, leaving grieving families without answers. This issue reverberates through tight-knit communities, fostering distrust in law enforcement and depriving survivors of the closure they desperately need.
Law enforcement has an obligation to ensure that every crime, no matter how old, is given the attention it deserves. When these cases go unaddressed, it sends a chilling message: that justice is not a guarantee, but a privilege. For these families, closure cannot be achieved without accountability, transparency, and action from those tasked with protecting them.
The stark reality is—many cold cases languish not because of a lack of desire on the part of our dedicated law enforcement officers, but due to insufficient resources, specialized investigative skills, and a consistent failure to engage with victims’ families on new developments.
To change this, a comprehensive review is needed, starting with a reallocation of personnel and bringing in outside expertise when necessary. This shouldn’t be limited to top level

leadership; boots-on-the-ground investigators with the skills to crack these complex cases are essential.
One proposal high has been reverberated over and over again, is to improve community policing through increased interaction. Providing officers with better patrol equipment like Segways not SUVs is a good start. This could foster trust and make officers more accessible to residents, which could make them feel more comfortable reporting information.
Another strategy is incentivizing information. Local businesses and community leaders can launch fundraising campaigns to increase rewards for tips that lead to arrests and convictions. This could encourage people to step forward, knowing their efforts are valued.
Public trust is the linchpin of effective policing. Unfortunately, limited staffing—currently at around 35 officers for Grand Turk— makes thorough investigations nearly impossible. While this number may suffice for smaller communities, it’s inadequate for a growing city with many living in
the shadows. What we don’t want is another Dook yard.
Citizens must feel confident reporting even minor offenses, as these reports help paint a broader picture of where resources are needed most.
Albeit intervention is a shared space, ultimately, crime prevention is primarily a police responsibility, but it requires community cooperation.
People need assurance that their identities will be protected if they come forward. Establishing safe houses or protection programs— on or off the island—could offer this necessary support. It’s a sad state, if the only time some citizens feels comfortable sharing intel is at town hall meetings among the top leaders.
Transparency is key to restoring public faith. Perhaps, government should consider public-private partnerships that broadcast crime updates on live TV, reaching beyond social media to a broader audience. Such platforms could be pivotal in solving these cases by drawing in fresh eyes and ears.
While overall crime may be down by 35%, this figure does little to comfort those still grieving

As the Turks and Caicos Islands grapples with increasing crime, unprecedented murders, proliferation of guns and gang activity – which many suspect are as a result of illegal Haitian migrants infiltrating the territory’s borders - its crime-ravaged neighbour is seeing a steady increase in criminal activity.
This week a US-based group Human Rights Watch (HRW) published a report outlining how Haitian criminal gangs are now luring more children into lives of crime and sexual abuse, as hunger and poverty drive young people to desperation.
HRW said hundreds, possibly thousands more children have joined violent gangs in recent months, with members forcing them to commit crimes and
The bloodshed and political chaos that has beleaguered Haiti has shown no signs of abating, with a single gang attack last week in the town of Pont-Sondé, about 40 miles from the capital Port-auPrince, leaving 115 people dead and at least 16 others seriously wounded, local officials have reported.
The HRW report published Wednesday says the gangs likely started drawing more children into their ranks in response to law enforcement operations against their members by the Haiti Police and the United Nations-backed Multinational Security Support Mission.
The MSS mission was recently approved by the United Nations.
Led by Kenya, the force has only been partially deployed.

Some 2.7 million people live in gang-controlled territory, including 500,000 children.
Last week (October 2) the UN Security Council authorised deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission, headed by Kenya, in close cooperation and coordination with the Government of Haiti, for an initial period of 12 months, with a review after nine.

will subside and cold cases will be resolved, even if that means creating a dedicated cold case unit. Only then can TCI take a meaningful step toward delivering justice for all its citizens.
The PDM’s rose has withered
Dear Editor,
The recent announcement that Rose Gardiner-Higgs has withdrawn as the PDM candidate for Kew Town and Cheshire Hall is more than just a shake-up; it’s a clarion call for alarm bells ringing across the electorate. Her departure, purportedly due to “personal health reasons,” raises serious questions about the PDM’s stability, internal dynamics, and overall ability to govern.
Let’s be clear: voter confidence is the bedrock of any political party. A sudden withdrawal creates a vacuum of uncertainty, leaving voters questioning whether the PDM can maintain a reliable and organised campaign. When a candidate steps down abruptly, it signals that something is amiss. Voters are not fools. They will wonder: What internal strife is brewing beneath the surface? Is the PDM so disorganised that it cannot support its candidates? Such questions breed apathy and disillusionment, and in an election year, that is a dangerous cocktail for any political party.
The implications of Gardiner-Higgs’ exit are farreaching. It might be tempting to dismiss her departure as an isolated incident, but the public isn’t so easily swayed. The circumstances surrounding her withdrawal can’t help but fuel speculation about deeper issues within the PDM. Are party members feeling unsupported? Are internal conflicts causing rifts that we, the electorate, are not privy to? The perception of instability is often more damaging than the reality, and the PDM is currently drowning in a sea of uncertainty.
Moreover, the PDM is now
under intense scrutiny over its leadership challenges. The inability to maintain a solid slate of candidates raises serious concerns about its viability as an alternative to the current government. The PDM can’t even keep its candidates in the race, how can they convince the electorate they are fit to lead?
This situation indicates that the PDM is not prepared to lead. Their disarray speaks volumes to undecided voters and those disillusioned with the party’s recent missteps. These voters are searching for stability and assurance, hoping for representatives who not only show up but demonstrate the capability to govern effectively. When candidates withdraw unexpectedly, it sows doubt about the party’s organisation and readiness to tackle our communities’ pressing issues. If the PDM cannot present a united front and strong candidates, they risk alienating these crucial voters who want reliable leadership to navigate the challenges ahead.
In the end, the PDM must take a long, hard look in the mirror. They must quash the growing discontent and provide solid candidates who inspire confidence, not confusion. The withdrawal of Gardiner-Higgs is a stark reminder that voters want leadership they can rely on, not a party riddled with uncertainty. If the PDM fails to address these issues headon, it risks losing the very electorate it seeks to serve.

TCI bolsters anti-crime arsenal with sweeping legislative reforms
In a valiant effort to combat the rising tide of organised crime and strengthen the territory’s international standing, the Turks and Caicos Islands’ House of Assembly has introduced a comprehensive suite of legislative bills.
These bills, presented by Attorney General Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles, aim to align the territory with global antimoney laundering and counterterrorism financing standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
Addressing the House of Assembly on September 25th, 2024, Attorney General Braithwaite-Knowles underscored the urgency of the legislative overhaul.
She described this suite of bills as pivotal to the Turks and Caicos Islands’ compliance with international standards established by the Financial Action Task Force, a global body responsible for ensuring jurisdictions have robust systems in place to manage their financial systems, combat money laundering, and counter the financing of terrorism and weapons proliferation.
The Attorney General emphasised the territory’s commitment to meeting these international obligations, stating, “The Turks and Caicos Islands, as a member of the CFATF (Caribbean Financial Action Task Force), is subject to rigorous monitoring and assessment.
“These assessments, known as mutual evaluations, scrutinise not only our legislative and policy frameworks but also the effectiveness of our systems in
areas such as prosecution, mutual legal assistance, and international cooperation.”
Key bills included the AntiGang Amendment Bill 2024, which addresses deficiencies in the Anti-Gang Ordinance, particularly regarding Article 10 of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime.
The Control of Drugs Amendment Bill 2024 was also debated, focusing on aggravating offenses committed near schools and educational institutions.
The Prevention of Terrorism Amendment Bill 2024 and the Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2024 were also introduced.
The Integrity Commission Amendment Bill 2024 and the Chief Justice Responsibilities Amendment Bill 2024 were also discussed, emphasising their roles in maintaining international compliance and addressing serious crime issues.
The proposed bills address a wide range of critical areas, including:
Enhanced International Cooperation: The bills aim to strengthen the territory’s ability to cooperate with other jurisdictions in investigating and prosecuting serious crimes, in line with international conventions such as the Vienna Convention, the

renewable energy projects through incentives and licensing structures. Additionally, initiatives are underway to integrate renewable energy systems into the national power grid, empowering individuals and businesses to contribute to a greener and more affordable energy landscape.
“The implementation of the Renewable Energy Bill underscores our commitment to ensuring energy security and affordability for all,”
Commissioner Arthur reiterated. He expressed confidence that this “progressive step” will position the Turks and Caicos Islands as a “leader in sustainable energy development in the Caribbean.”
The EUD is inviting residents to submit their written feedback on the draft bill by October 25th.
The schedule of public consultation sessions, hosted by the EUD Commissioner and his team, will be announced shortly. Residents can access the bill and related materials on
the government website and are encouraged to follow the EUD’s social media pages for updates.
“We encourage you to engage fully – to review the materials and share your written feedback over the coming weeks, and join us in your local community when we come out to see you in October,” urged Commissioner Arthur.
“These smaller, face-toface sessions provide the best opportunities for meaningful conversation on our country’s energy future.”
including provisions for the forfeiture of assets used in criminal enterprises.
Protection of Vulnerable Groups: The bills include provisions to safeguard children and young people from the scourge of drug-related crime, with increased penalties for offenses committed near schools.
Attorney General BraithwaiteKnowles stressed the direct impact of these legislative reforms on the territory’s fight against crime: “These bills go to the heart of the serious crime situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands. They provide additional tools to law enforcement and foster cooperation with our international partners...ensuring that there is no place to hide for those who seek to engage in criminal activities.”
Palermo Convention, the UN Convention against Corruption, and the Terrorist Financing Convention.
Disruption of Criminal Networks: The legislation introduces measures to dismantle organized crime and gang activity,
The introduction of this comprehensive legislative package signals the Turks and Caicos Islands’ unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding its financial system from illicit activities.
As the territory awaits its next round of international assessments, these reforms are expected to significantly enhance its compliance with global standards and bolster its efforts to combat organised crime.

assurance of life beyond this world.
This message of hope is not merely for the distant future; it impacts how people live today. When the church reminds the nation of the promises of eternal life, it encourages people to live with purpose, integrity, and courage. It gives them the strength to endure hardships, knowing that their faithfulness will be rewarded.
In conclusion, the Turks and Caicos Islands need a church that mirrors the qualities seen in Christ’s message to Smyrna. This church must embrace and support those who suffer, standing as a testament to maintaining faith in the power of Jesus even in times of
adversity. It must hold firmly to the truth, offering guidance and discernment in a complex world. Most importantly, it must offer the hope of eternal life, encouraging its members to live with the courage and conviction that comes from knowing they are part of something greater than themselves.
As TCI moves forward, the church must step up to be more than just a building or a Sunday gathering place. It must become a sanctuary for the soul, a pillar of truth, and a beacon of hope. This is the type of church that can guide TCI through its spiritual and material challenges and offer lasting impact for generations to come.

Grand Turk is undergoing a renaissance. Spearheaded by the Grand Turk Enhancement and Sustainability Agency (GTESA), a wave of revitalisation projects is sweeping across the island, promising to bolster tourism, preserve cultural heritage, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
This ambitious undertaking,
championed by Premier Hon C. Washington Misick, is set to transform the nation’s capital, positioning it as a beacon of sustainable development and historical appreciation in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
In a video address to the nation on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Premier Misick unveiled the remarkable progress of the
Grand Turk Enhancement and Sustainability Agency (GTESA) in its mission to revitalise and preserve the nation’s capital.
GTESA, founded in 2023, has embarked on an ambitious journey to safeguard Grand Turk’s cultural heritage while fostering a sustainable future.
Premier Misick underscored the profound significance of
Two arrested with illegal guns in drugs and prostitution crackdown
Two security guards are currently in police custody following an intelligenceled operation on a business establishment along South Dock Road in Providenciales.
Police said the operation, aimed at disrupting drug and human trafficking, prostitution and illegal firearms, was conducted last Thursday evening (October 3).
Shortly before 11 pm, officers from various units within the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force descended upon the establishment. Following searches, officers seized two illegal firearms and several rounds of ammunition.
Two male security guards were arrested and remain in custody as
investigations continue.
Commenting on the operation, acting Commissioner of Police Rodney Adams said the force anticipates that the recent firearms seizure will significantly reduce violent crimes, particularly homicides and burglaries committed with firearms.
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude and commendation to the officers involved in this operation. Your bravery and commitment to placing yourselves in harm’s way, all in the service of keeping the Turks and Caicos Islands safe, are deeply appreciated. This is the third illegal firearm found within 24 hours.
“I also wish to thank the public, particularly those
who have come forward with information.
“Your vigilance in seeing something and saying something plays a critical role in our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of our communities,” Adams stated.
He said his officers will maintain their unwavering determination to seize illegal firearms and relentlessly pursue those who choose to engage in criminal activity.
Anyone with information about illegal firearms is urged to contact the closest police station, 911, the Serious Crime Unit at 231-1842, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 or the Crime Stoppers P3 app to provide any information anonymously.
historical preservation, stating, “Without history, a society lacks a shared memory of its journey, its fundamental values, traditions, culture, buildings, art forms, and the past decisions that shaped its current state. Without this historical context, it becomes impossible to meaningfully explore the political, the social, or moral issues within that society.”
GTESA’s multifaceted approach encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing Grand Turk’s infrastructure and cultural identity.
Recent accomplishments include the repair and painting of boundary walls along Middle Street and Hospital Road, extensive cleaning efforts in key areas, and the clean-up of North Creek, a vital ecosystem.
The restoration of historical and heritage buildings, particularly along Front Street, is a cornerstone of GTESA’s efforts.
“Grand Turk’s pride of place and position in the Turks and Caicos archipelago is foundational to our national legacy, and it must be protected,” declared Premier Misick.
“It is fundamental to the identity of our nation and our people and, together with its culture, must be used to leverage economic benefits for the island.”
Looking ahead, GTESA has a robust pipeline of projects designed to further transform Grand Turk.
Coupled with this, Misick revealed that a recycling initiative is currently in the tender phase, with submissions closing on
October 23rd.
The agency is also advancing plans for the South Base buildings, with asbestos testing completed and the development of terms of reference for asbestos abatement and demolition underway.
“We will be installing street lighting along Middle Street and Duke Street to enhance public safety, erecting new signage for historical and heritage sites, along with street name signs across the island, and laying street pavers across six alleys in the historic Middle Street district to preserve its charm,” Premier Misick elaborated.
GTESA’s commitment extends to improving public amenities, with plans to install benches at strategic locations, place stationary binoculars at bird-watching spots, and enhance the overall ecotourism experience. These initiatives aim to foster a vibrant community and promote environmental awareness.
In his closing remarks, Premier Misick affirmed GTESA’s unwavering dedication to its mission, stating, “As we continue this work, GTESA will continue breathing new life into our beloved capital, ensuring that the stories of Grand Turk continue to be celebrated and cherished for generations to come.”
With its comprehensive and forward-thinking approach, GTESA is poised to usher in a new era for Grand Turk, where history and progress converge to create a sustainable and culturally rich future.

The airside walkway canopy, valued at $1,582,000 and slated for completion by the end of October, is a multifaceted upgrade aimed at optimising aircraft turnaround times and elevating the overall passenger journey. The structure will provide muchneeded shade and a cooler, more comfortable environment for

Restaurant: Provence by Éric
When your guests arrive at your property, the first thing they will ask you is “where is the beach”, that’s why we come to Turks and Caicos isn’t. They will also ask you where to go eat. We are lucky here to have a very wide variety of restaurants, from Italian cuisine, to French cuisine, Japanese restaurants and new fusion cuisines. travellers, particularly during the hot summer months.
Musgrove, who experienced the cooling effects of the canopy first-hand during his visit, said that the project was shaping up nicely. “The constant breeze was noticeable, and I believe travellers will appreciate the comfort as they transition from the aircraft to the terminal, especially if they have to queue outside due to congestion.”
Beyond passenger comfort, the canopy will also incorporate stateof-the-art surveillance systems to bolster security. Integrated lighting, robust construction materials, and a weather-resistant roof will further enhance the walkway’s functionality and durability.
Minister Musgrove emphasised TCIAA’s unwavering commitment to passenger safety and comfort throughout all phases of airport operations. He noted the presence of experienced contractors on-site as an added layer of accountability
“Seeing everyone in their safety gear gives me confidence that TCIAA is prioritizing safety,” he stated. “These upgrades are not just for international travellers; they’re also for locals,” continued the minister.
He also highlighted recent improvements at the airport, including efforts to alleviate congestion and enhance air conditioning in the international arrivals area. He underscored that these initiatives collectively contribute to a more positive and welcoming experience for all passengers arriving in the TCI.
As the airside walkway canopy nears completion, the Howard Hamilton International Airport is poised to set a new benchmark for passenger comfort and safety in the region. With its innovative design and focus on efficiency, the canopy is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for both local and international passengers.

Haiti condemns Dominican Republic’s plan to deport 10,000 migrants weekly
Haiti’s foreign minister blasted a policy announced last week by the neighbouring Dominican Republic to deport tens of thousands of migrants back to Haiti, where gang violence is fuelling a devastating humanitarian crisis.
“The brutal scenes of roundups and deportations that we are witnessing are an affront to human dignity,” Haitian Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy said on X. “We strongly condemn these dehumanizing acts and demand respect and justice.”
The Dominican Republic, which shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with Haiti, last week said it would deport up to 10,000 migrants per week who were in the country illegally, a sharp increase.
So far this month, the Dominican Republic has deported more than 9,000 people, more than 7,000 of those since Thursday, the nation’s migration agency said in a recent statement.
More than 4,900 of the total were Haitians, a Dominican official who declined to be named told Reuters.
The Dominican agency said it was carrying out the deportations while respecting human rights.
The Dominican government blames Haiti’s chaos for crime and security problems on the Dominican part of the island, and says it has lost patience with the slow progress of an international security mission mandated to help resolve Haiti’s crisis.
The United Nations has asked countries in the region to halt
deportations of Haitians home to a situation of danger.
If the Dominican Republic follows through on its plan, the number deported in a year would rise sharply from more than 200,000 Haitians forcibly returned last year.
Dupuy said the Dominican policy contravenes human rights standards and she had alerted relevant international bodies.
Her statement followed unverified video on social media that appeared to show a crowd running away from Dominican officials near Punta Cana, a popular tourist resort.
Dominican media on Monday reported that Haitian construction workers there were protesting to demand their employers provide work permits so they are not
Bahamas: Anger at lack of Dorian answers
The revelation that the Davis administration will not launch a formal inquiry into Hurricane Dorian-related deaths reopened the wounds Sitha Silien has suffered since the category five storm swept through Abaco, taking her mother, brother, and cousin.
She and other Abaco residents this week lamented what they see as a minimal effort by the state to help them get closure and answers to critical questions.
Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis said on Tuesday that investigations into Dorianrelated deaths are ongoing “administratively” to inform future actions. He said his administration decided against a formal inquiry despite his suggestion in opposition for an independent investigation
either by external police or a commission of inquiry into the fate of those still missing in Abaco and Grand Bahama after the hurricane.
This week, the Office of the Prime Minister’s communications officials did not respond to The Tribune’s requests for details on the administrative efforts to which Mr Davis referred.
Ms Silien, who lived in the Mudd shanty town during Dorian in 2019, said her mother died when a piece of plywood struck her as the storm intensified. She said her brother was killed when the roof of a church collapsed on him, and her cousin has been missing since the storm.
She said she had endured a five-year battle to obtain death certificates for her loved ones. She

deported.
William Charpentier, who heads the Dominican Republic’s National Bureau for Migration and Refugees, a rights-focused association of civil organizations, told CNN on Sunday that deporting over 1,000 people a day would give the immigration system too little time to consider individual cases and that mass deportations violated international law.
“We understand that the government has every right to deport people who are in its territory without papers, but this right has a limit,” he said.
In the United States, presidential candidate Donald Trump has also pledged mass deportations and has made false claims about Haitian migrants in the town of Springfield, Ohio.
The thermal anomaly detected at La Soufriere volcano over the weekend has not persisted, according to latest observations by experts monitoring the volcanic activity.
“The low thermal anomaly first detected by the NASA FIRMS hot spot detection system on Sunday 6 October 2024, at the summit of La Soufrière volcano did not persist into Tuesday, 8 October,” the National Emergency Management Organisation’s (NEMO) said.
It indicated that this advisory was issued by the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) based at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, following a field visit to the volcano summit by the NEMO Soufriere Monitoring Unit (SMU), on Tuesday 8 October.
NEMO-SMU then found “no unusual activity was visible in the crater.”
The team also reported that there were “no significant changes in gas composition from vents in the crater,” based on data collected on October 4.
Officials have offered several possible explanations for Sunday’s heat detection saying it was “likely associated with temporal changes in the summit, which may have included a sulphur fire in the crater; an increase in degassing from fumaroles; or a small phreatic (steam) eruption that may have exposed hotter underlying rocks.”
Despite the return to normal temperature readings, authorities warn that risks remain. “Potential hazards associated with the presence of degassing at vents in the crater may still exist for some time as the volcano undergoes periodic fluctuations in background activity,” NEMO stated.
said the Coroner’s Court has yet to declare them dead, and now the lack of a formal inquiry has added to her grief.
“I’m being cut again,” she cried out. “It’s not fair.”
“They keep telling me to wait, and I’m right here waiting. If the
government knew they couldn’t bury my people, I asked to bury them myself, but they refused to release the bodies to me.”

Jamaica voted best Caribbean Culinary Destination at World Culinary Awards
Jamaica has once again solidified its place as a top culinary destination, earning prestigious recognition at the 5th annual World Culinary Awards held in the United Arab Emirates on October 2nd. The country was voted the Caribbean’s Best Culinary Destination of 2024, while Montego Bay was named the Caribbean’s Best Culinary City—a double win for the island nation.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Jamaica has claimed the title of Best Culinary Destination in the region.
Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, expressed his pride in the achievement, saying, “We are honoured to be recognized as the Caribbean’s top culinary destination, and I am fortunate to know first-hand why we are considered a culinary capital.” Bartlett highlighted the island’s
diverse and rich flavours, which are deeply rooted in both local culture and global influences. He noted iconic Jamaican dishes such as ackee and saltfish, jerk chicken, as well as the country’s renowned tropical fruits, Blue Mountain coffee, and rum, as key elements drawing visitors back to the island year after year.
Montego Bay’s win as Best Culinary City, for the second year in a row, further underscores the island’s culinary prominence.
“Montego Bay is home to some of Jamaica’s best culinary experiences,” said Donovan White, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism.
“From oceanfront grills along the Hip Strip to lively bars and fine dining, our culinary professionals work hard to provide extraordinary experiences for both locals and visitors.”

Haiti gangs are recruiting more child soldiers, human rights report says
Haiti’s armed gangs are increasingly recruiting children into their ranks, a report by Human Rights Watch warned on Wednesday, as nearfamine conditions push boys to pick up guns while girls are sexually abused and forced into domestic work.
The group, which advocates for human rights globally, said it had spoken to six children recently involved with gangs, all of whom said they wanted to leave and had joined because they were hungry and gangs were often the only source of food, shelter or money.
Boys are often used as informants, trained to use weapons and ammunition, and deployed in clashes against the police, HRW said. It cited the case of a boy
Children are targeted by gangs
called Michel, an orphan who was recruited six years ago when he was 8 and living on the streets and was given a loaded Kalashnikov. Girls are raped and forced to cook and clean for gang members, the report said, and often discarded once they become pregnant. Haiti’s powerful gangs have
been expanding their influence in recent years while state institutions have been paralyzed by a lack of funds and political crises. Gangs now control territory where 2.7 million people live, including half a million children.
As they have grown, the gangs have ramped up child recruitment, said HRW.
About a third of gang members are children, according to estimates by the United Nations, which has also warned of boys being used for killings and to attack institutions, and girls being forced into exploitative sexual relations and killed in broad daylight for refusing to do so.
HRW said the criminal groups are increasingly using popular social media apps to attract recruits.
Hurricane Milton spawned high number of destructive, deadly tornadoes
Dozens of tornadoes spawned by Hurricane Milton caught many Floridians by surprise as they braced for heavy rain, strong winds and storm surges. Violent twisters were seen crossing highways, ripping off roofs and downing trees and power lines.
When Debbie Jones felt a drop in pressure and her ears popping in the Holiday Pines neighborhood of Ft. Pierce, she knew it was a tornado.
“All of a sudden, the power went out. I started hearing the wind pick up and debris start hitting very loudly. So I cranked the hurricane shutters shut and bolted out of there with them,” said Megan Brown, whose boyfriend is Jones’ son. The family barricaded together with their four dogs in the back of the house away from windows.
There have been 38 preliminary eyewitness reports of tornadoes in Florida since Wednesday night, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center. The state sees 50 tornadoes on average total in a whole year. The number confirmed is expected to rise over
the coming days as damaged sites are assessed.
“Certainly that will be a notable part of this storm, was how many tornadoes occurred within such a short period,” said Matthew Elliott, warning coordination meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Center.
Five deaths related to tornadoes occurred in the Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, according to authorities. At a White House briefing, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said there were reports of as many as 10 fatalities from tornadoes, but he cautioned that the number was tentative.
Eyewitness reports came as the National Weather Service issued 126 tornado warnings on Thursday in the state.
The ferocity of the twisters was also an unusual aspect of Milton.
“It’s definitely out of the ordinary,” said Northern Illinois University meteorology professor Victor Gensini. “Hurricanes do produce tornadoes, but they’re usually weak. What we saw today
Hurricane Milton also spawned a number of tornadoes
was much closer to what we see in the Great Plains in the spring.”
Conditions for breeding tornadoes were particularly favorable. Hurricane Milton spent the day offshore with warmth from the sun and instability in the atmosphere creating the right environment.
Tornadoes spawned by hurricanes and tropical storms most often occur in the rightfront quadrant of the storm, but sometimes they can also take place near the storm’s eyewall, according to NOAA. The heat and humidity present in the atmosphere during such storms and changes in wind direction or speed with height,
known as wind shear, contribute to their likelihood.
“There’s an incredible amount of swirling going on,” Gensini said of the conditions that allowed for the twisters to grow. “Those tornadoes were just in a very favorable environment.”
Earlier this year, Hurricane Beryl spawned 65 confirmed tornadoes, across several states. The most ever caused by a hurricane was 118 from Ivan in 2004. The difference is the tornadoes from Milton all came in Florida and over just eight to 10 hours.
Teasing apart the damage caused specifically by Milton’s tornadoes could be complicated,
but scientists say keeping accurate records of tornadoes is important. Tornado activity can be grouped into three seasons: spring, tropical cyclone season, and late fall and winter. “It really goes to show that tornadoes can be a significant part of a tropical cyclone, in this case, a Category three hurricane,” Elliot said. The warming of the oceans by climate change is making hurricanes more intense, but Gensini said he did not know of any connection between human-caused warming and the deadly tornadoes that Floridians experienced with Milton. Kate joins Prince William for her first public appearance since ending cancer treatment
Britain’s Prince and Princess of Wales made a surprise visit to Southport, northwest England, on Thursday, where they met the bereaved families of three children killed in a knife attack in July.
The visit was the first public appearance for Catherine, known as Kate, since she finished her chemotherapy treatment.
Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9, were fatally stabbed while attending a Taylor Swiftthemed dance class in the town on July 29.
The royal couple met privately with the families of the three young girls, as well as with their dance teacher who was present during the attack.
William and Kate – who has only carried out a handful of public appearances this yearalso met with emergency services personnel who responded to the scene in July, as well as mental health practitioners who have
been supporting the “blue light” community in the months since.
“I can’t underestimate how grateful they [the families] all are for the support you provided on the day,” Kate told the responders,
according to Britain’s PA Media news agency, during the deeply emotional sit-down. She then thanked the frontline staff on behalf of the families.
Meanwhile, William, the heir to
the British throne, told the group that they were “heroes” and urged them to “make sure you look after yourselves.”
“Please take your time, don’t rush back to work,” he added.
Following the unexpected appearance in Southport, William and Kate spoke of their “powerful” visit on social media.
“We continue to stand with everyone in Southport. Meeting the community today has been a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting one another in the wake of unimaginable tragedy. You will remain in our thoughts and prayers,” the couple wrote in a post on X.
At the time of the knife attack, the Waleses released a statement on social media from their perspective as parents. “We cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through,” they said in July, before sending their
“love, thoughts and prayers” and gratitude to emergency responders.
The pair also made a donation through their royal foundation to a fundraiser set up to provide psychological and physical rehab for police and ambulance personnel involved in the attack and the subsequent riots.
CNN understands the princess made the decision to join her husband on Thursday to show her support, empathy and compassion to the local community.
Kate, 42, has been easing her way back into public life following her announcement that she had completed chemotherapy and was cancer free in a video last month. She has not revealed the type of cancer she was being treated for.
The princess said the past nine months had been challenging but that “I am, however, looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.”
Harris and Trump gamble $200m on biggest prize
The White House’s address may be 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but the real road to the presidency runs through the state of Pennsylvania, the biggest prize among the electoral battleground map.
According to calculations by elections analyst Nate Silver, the candidate who wins Pennsylvania has more than a 90% chance of winning the White House.
“It’s the granddaddy of all the swing states,” said former congressman Patrick Murphy, who represented north-eastern Pennsylvania as a Democrat from 2007-11.
With its 19 electoral votes, Pennsylvania – the fifth most populous US state - is the lynchpin of the swing-state electoral firewalls for both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
If the Democrats win Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, along with one congressional district in Nebraska, she’s the next president. If the Republicans carry Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia, Trump is back in the White House next year.
Without Pennsylvania, there is no way Trump can win without flipping at least three of the states Joe Biden won in 2020.
Nicknamed the Keystone State, Pennsylvania could in fact be the key to the White House.
It is also where BBC Question Time will broadcast a US election special on Thursday 10 October, diving into the issues and voter concerns behind the presidential contest.
A BATTLEGROUND THAT LOOKS LIKE AMERICA
Pennsylvania is not only the most valuable swing state, it also can
Liberty Bell in Philadelphia
be seen as a microcosm of the US as a whole – demographically, economically and politically.
It is a former manufacturing state that has been transitioning to newer industries and businesses, but it has a large energy sector because of its abundant oil shale deposits. Agriculture is still the second-largest industry in the state.
The majority of the population is white, but there are growing immigrant communities. Some areas, like Allentown – the working-class factory city made famous by a Billy Joel song – are now majority Hispanic. The state’s black population, at 12%, is just under the US total of 13%.
As for the politics, the state’s two large urban areas, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, heavily favour the Democrats. Between the two are vast stretches of rural territory
where Republicans dominate. And the suburbs that once were reliably conservative are now tilting to the left.
That gives rise to the old quip that Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with (deeply Republican) Alabama in the middle.
Somehow, all these political cross-currents and shifting dynamics have kept Pennsylvania at a near dead-even balance when it comes to presidential elections. President Joe Biden won the state by about 80,000 votes in 2020. Donald Trump carried it by about 40,000 in his surprise 2016 win over Hillary Clinton.
Only once in the last 40 years has a candidate won Pennsylvania by double-digits - Barack Obama in his 2008 electoral landslide.
Current polling puts the race
between Harris and Trump in the state at a virtual dead heat.
According to the 538/ABC News poll tracker, Harris holds a lead by less than a percent – a margin that has hardly shifted over the course of this tumultuous political year.
THE KEYS TO A WHITE HOUSE VICTORY
Both the Harris and Trump campaigns have been pouring enormous resources into Pennsylvania. They are spending more on television advertising there than any other swing state. Both candidates make regular visits.
Harris introduced her running mate pick, Tim Walz, at a rally in Philadelphia. She spent days preparing for her presidential debate in Pittsburgh. She made a tentpole economic speech there
two weeks ago.
Last Saturday, Trump held a massive rally in Butler, where in July he was nearly assassinated. On Wednesday he was in Biden’s hometown of Scranton and Reading.
And when the principals aren’t around, both campaigns have other politicians and officials to drum up support.
“A candidate can’t go into a county to talk to 1,200 people,” says former Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell. “The state is too big. There’s just not time. That’s what surrogates are for.”
Rendell notes that the current governor, Democrat Josh Shapiro, is a big help for Democrats here, as he is very popular in the state and a dynamic speaker – qualities that had made him the odds-on favourite to be Harris’s vicepresidential pick.
For Harris, her keys to victory are to post dominating numbers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and win the suburbs by enough to offset Trump’s margins in the rest of the state.
An essential part of this strategy is to win over moderate voters and some Republicans – including the more than 160,000 who turned out to vote for former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in the state’s Republican primary, held earlier this year, well after Trump had already locked up the party’s nomination.
“What these people need to hear is ways in which both the past record of Kamala Harris and the future plans of Kamala Harris are basically centrist positions – that she is not this crazy, wild-eyed radical leftist,” said Craig Snyder, former Republican Senate staffer who is running Pennsylvania’s “Haley Voters for Harris” effort.
UN accuses Israel of war crimes over attacks on Gaza hospitals
A United Nations commission of inquiry has accused Israel of carrying out a “concerted policy to destroy Gaza’s healthcare system” during its ongoing war with Hamas.
The commission said Israeli attacks on Gaza’s healthcare facilities and Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees amounted to war crimes, as well as the crime against humanity of “extermination”.
Hamas and other Palestinian groups are also accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity for their treatment of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Israel is yet to comment, but has long accused the UN of bias and
dismissed previous critical reports.
The report, which will be presented to the UN General Assembly on 30 October, was led by Navi Pillay, the South African former UN human rights chief.
Israeli security forces have “deliberately killed, detained and tortured medical personnel”, the report said, while children have “borne the brunt” of “the collapse of the health system”.
was also shelled, and Hind, her family, and the ambulance crew all died.
The commission says the attacks on the healthcare system have “inflicted conditions of life resulting in the destruction of generations of Palestinian children and, potentially, the Palestinian people as a group”.
The commission cites the case of five-year-old Hind Rajab, whose car was hit as she and her family tried to flee bombing. Several family members were killed, but Hind managed to

The report alleges Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas, have subjected Israeli hostages to “physical violence, abuse, sexual violence, forced isolation, limited access to hygiene facilities, water and food, threats and humiliation”. It calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the remaining hostages.
Combs spending his time in jail preparing for his case, source says
Sean “Diddy” Combs has spent his three weeks in jail speaking with his defense attorneys, preparing for his case and receiving visiting from his family, a source close to the music producer told CNN.
“His family is visiting. He speaks to his lawyers. Those are the only visitors he has,” the individual said. “He needs to focus on his case. That’s all he is doing all day.”
The musician is currently in federal custody as he awaits trial on counts of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty.
The source added that Combs’ children have visited him at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. (Combs has four adult children and two teenage twin girls who have all visited him in jail. He also has a 1-year-old daughter.)
“He’s doing fine, but it’s hard for him. He’s a family person and he loves being a father,” the source said.
Combs will be present at Thursday’s status hearing, according to the source, who said he is not expected to speak in court.
His lawyers have said they want to go to trial quickly since he was twice denied bail.
In a letter to Judge Arun Subramanian, Combs’ attorneys said on Wednesday that they intend
to request a trial date in April or May 2025.
Prosecutors said they will be ready on the date the judge sets, but note that a trial date doesn’t have to be scheduled at this time, according to the letter, which was submitted by both sides.
ALLEGATION OF MEDIA LEAKS
Attorneys for Combs filed a motion late Wednesday accusing the government of leaking a video of the hip-hop mogul beating
his former girlfriend and other evidence to the media, asking a judge to potentially bar the footage from a trial.
The motion filed in the Southern District of New York references the 2016 hotel surveillance video published exclusively by CNN that shows Combs dragging and kicking his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura.
Combs initially denied allegations of abusing Ventura, which were included in a November 2023 lawsuit she filed
before the video was made public.
Following the release of the video, Combs apologized. Combs’ lawyers accused the government of leaking the video to CNN. They did not provide evidence for their claims.
In a letter to the judge Wednesday night Damian Williams, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York wrote that “the Government was not in possession of the video before its publication by CNN” and that there is no “factual basis” for Combs’ assertion that authorities leaked the video to CNN or in violation of grand jury secrecy rules.
CNN DECLINED TO COMMENT.
The motion filed by Combs’ attorneys also alleges that authorities alerted the media about the searches in March of his homes in Los Angeles and Miami.
The motion claims the leaks “taint the jury pool and deprive Mr. Combs of his right to a fair trial.”
Combs’ attorneys asked the judge to impose a gag order prohibiting the government from providing information about evidence in the case to the media.
They contend the leaks came from agents of the Department of Homeland Security, whose Homeland Security Investigations division conducted the search, and not from prosecutors on the case.
A spokesperson for HSI New York declined to comment.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Combs’ court appearance on Thursday will be his third since his arrest and his first in front of Subramanian, a Biden-nominated jurist who has been on the bench since last year. He was assigned the case last week after Judge Andrew Carter recused himself.
Carter transferred the case because of a long-standing personal and professional relationship he has with one of the new attorneys, according to a spokesman for the court.
Carter, who was nominated by Obama, was initially assigned the case. He denied Combs bail saying he had concerns about witness tampering and physical violence after prosecutors alleged Combs was in contact with witnesses who received grand jury subpoenas. Since then, Combs beefed up his legal team by adding new attorneys and appealed the ruling.
Prosecutors have started turning over evidence to Combs legal team, including Combs’ cell phone that was seized in March during a search, and started copying 40 devices and five iCloud reports to provide to the defense.
Combs’ attorneys said they want the judge to order the government to immediately produce the materials seized over six months ago.
“The timely production of these materials is critical to Mr. Combs’ ability to prepare for his defense,” they wrote to the judge. (CNN)
Deputy Premier of the British Virgin Islands, Lorna Smith has responded to claims that popular Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel is being contracted by the government to perform in the British Virgin Islands later this year.
Speaking recently on local radio, Smith expressed her disapproval of the news, which she, along with many others, had heard. She stated:
“I do not support it and I have no problem in saying so.”
Smith urged that this matter should be addressed promptly, emphasizing her hope that it can be “nipped in the bud” regarding government support. She highlighted that engaging in such an activity would not be appropriate at this time, given the pressing issues that need to be prioritized.
Brazil lifts ban on Musk’s X after it pays $5m fine
Brazil’s Supreme Court has said it is lifting a ban on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
In his decision, Justice Alexandre de Moraes said that he authorised the “immediate return” of X’s activities in the country after it paid hefty fines and blocked accounts accused of spreading misinformation.
According to a statement, the site has paid fines totalling 28 million reais ($5.1m; £3.8m) and agreed to appoint a local representative, as required by Brazilian law.
Moraes had blocked access to the platform, owned by Elon Musk, after it had refused to ban several profiles deemed by the government to be spreading misinformation about the 2022 Brazilian Presidential election.
Anatel, Brazil’s telecoms watchdog, has been
instructed to ensure service has resumed for more than 20 million users in the country within 24 hours.
After months of defying the court’s orders, Musk fired the company’s Brazilian staff in late August and closed X’s office in Brazil.
“The decision to close
X offices in Brazil was difficult,” Musk, who also runs electric carmaker Tesla and rocket company SpaceX, wrote at the time.
A self-declared “freespeech absolutist”, the billionaire entrepreneur had described Justice Moraes’ move to ban several dozen
accounts as an abuse of power and a violation of free speech.
Several days later, Justice Moraes ordered for the entire platform to be blocked across the country.
Many users switched to alternative sites such as Bluesky, and demand for VPNs (Virtual Proxy Networks) in Brazil soared.
But in September, the platform began to comply with the court’s orders in an apparent U-turn.
On Tuesday, X said that it was “proud to return to Brazil”.
“Giving tens of millions of Brazilians access to our indispensable platform was paramount throughout this entire process,” its government affairs team wrote in a statement.
It appears that X has now complied with all of the judge’s demands in order to have the ban lifted.
Chris Pine is now a children’s
book author
Actor Chris Pine is telling a different type of story these days.
The “Star Trek” star has a new children’s book out, titled “When Digz the Dog Met Zurl the Squirrel: A Short Tale About a Short Tail.”
“A lot of the impetus for writing, the joy of writing, was thinking about parents reading it, because I remember when I was a kid and fell in love with a book, I’d have my father read it over and over again,” Pine told People magazine.
“Even though I’m not a parent, I can’t tell you how many parents I’ve talked to, and for whatever reason, they are just sick and tired of reading book X for the umpteenth time, so I thought, ‘Well, it would be great to write something that hopefully feels so delicious in the mouth and is so fun to say … that they would want to come back and explore over and over again,’” Pine said. “The story of it is really quite simple, but I think it doesn’t mean that it’s any less important to state the importance of compassion and seeing past judging a book by its cover, so to speak.”
It focuses on a dog names Digz, who believes he is the ruler of a garden and a squirrel, Zurl who disagrees.
The pair soon learn that they have some things in common.
“It was during the first part of [COVID] quarantine, I was out on a walk with a friend, and my dog chased after a squirrel,” Pine said. “My friend was like, ‘I don’t think I know about a story about a dog chasing a squirrel.’ It seems so universal. Doesn’t every dog chase a squirrel? And I said, ‘Yeah, that sounds about right.’”
The star is a dog owner himself and said he “really wanted the book to have that timeless feel, but also the musicality of the language that you’d find in Dr. Seuss.” “I wanted to write and create something that felt like it had existed already for 50 years,” he said. “It’s a book that’ll be relevant now, it could have been relevant 50 years ago, it’ll be relevant 50 years from now, … and it’s a story that’s very simple, digestible and easy to articulate to young children, and something that hopefully is fun for the parents to read,”

New exercise pill mimics the effects of running a 10K — without effort
Talk about a lazy workout.
Researchers in Denmark have developed a new drug that mimics the effects and benefits of strenuous exercise without moving a muscle.
The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, maintains that the drug produces the same health benefits as running a long distance at a fast clip.
Currently called LaKe, the drug has been shown in lab rats to flush toxins and strengthen the heart.
“We’ve developed a molecule that can mimic the body’s natural metabolic response to strenuous exercise and fasting,” Dr Thomas Poulsen, a chemist at Aarhus University who led the research, said. “In practice, the molecule brings the body into a metabolic state corresponding to running 10 kilometres at high speed on an empty stomach.”
Following exercise, the body typically enters a period of inflammation wherein levels of lactate and ketones spike.
In addition to triggering the release of appetite-suppressing hormones, this spike also flushes fatty acids from the bloodstream,
The drug can revolutionise fitness
reducing the risk of conditions like heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes and precipitating the body’s repair systems.
According to the American Heart Association, one-third of U.S. adults have three or more risk factors that contribute to heart disease, kidney disease, and metabolic disorders such as diabetes.
The release of lactate helps maintain metabolic function.
Meanwhile, ketone is produced by the liver and kicks in anytime the body begins to convert fat into energy: after long periods of exertion, during fasting, or when there is a carbohydrate deficit.
Researchers say LaKe can safely and effectively control the amounts
of lactate and ketones produced by the body.
“It can be difficult to maintain motivation to run many kilometers at high speed and go without food,” Poulsen explained. LaKe promises to deliver the benefits without the difficulty of exertion, which could be a game changer for those with injuries or compromised health.
“‘For people with physical ailments, such as a weak heart or general weakness, a nutritional supplement can be the key to better recovery,” Poulsen said. LaKe will soon undergo human trials to determine its safety and efficacy. If successful, the molecule could be developed and marketed for humans. (NYPost)
AI discovers 161,000 new viruses
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to reveal details of a diverse and fundamental branch of life living right under our feet and in every corner of the globe.
161,979 new species of RNA virus have been discovered using a machine learning tool that researchers believe will vastly improve the mapping of life on Earth and could aid in the identification of many millions more viruses yet to be characterised.
Published in Cell and conducted by an international team of researchers, the study is the largest virus species discovery paper ever published.
“We have been offered a window into an otherwise hidden part of life on earth, revealing remarkable biodiversity,” said senior author Professor Edwards Holmes from the School of Medical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.
“This is the largest number of new virus species discovered in a single study, massively expanding our knowledge of the viruses that live among us,” Professor Holmes said.
“To find this many new viruses in one fell swoop is mind-blowing, and it just scratches the surface,
the world and may even play key roles in global ecosystems. In this study they were found living in the atmosphere, hot springs and hydrothermal vents.
“That extreme environments carry so many types of viruses is just another example of their phenomenal diversity and tenacity to live in the harshest settings, potentially giving us clues on how viruses and other elemental life-forms came to be,” Professor Holmes said.
HOW THE AI TOOL WORKED
The researchers built a deep learning algorithm, LucaProt, to compute vast troves of genetic sequence data, including lengthy virus genomes of up to 47,250 nucleotides and genomically complex information to discover more than 160,000 viruses.
“The vast majority of these viruses had been sequenced already and were on public databases, but they were so divergent that no one knew what they were,” Professor Holmes said.
“They comprised what is often referred to as sequence ‘dark matter’. Our AI method was able

Covid-19 may increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and deaths for three years after infection
Covid-19 could be a powerful risk factor for heart attacks and strokes for as long as three years after an infection, a large new study suggests.
The study was published Wednesday in the medical journal Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. It relied on medical records from roughly a quarter of a million people who were enrolled in a large database called the UK Biobank.
Within this dataset, researchers identified more than 11,000 people who had a positive lab test for Covid-19 documented in their medical records in 2020; nearly 3,000 of them had been hospitalised for their infections. They compared these groups with more than 222,000 others in the same database who didn’t have a history of Covid-19 over the same time frame.
People who caught Covid in 2020, before there were vaccines to blunt the infection, had twice the risk of a major cardiac event like a heart attack or stroke or death for almost three years after their illness, compared with the people who didn’t test positive, the study found.
If a person had been hospitalised for their infection, pointing to a more severe case, the risk of a major heart event in was even greater – more than three times higher – than for people without Covid in their medical records.
What’s more, for people who needed to be hospitalised, Covid appeared to be as potent a risk factor for future heart attacks and strokes as diabetes or peripheral artery disease, or PAD.
One study estimated that more than 3.5 million Americans were hospitalised for Covid between May 2020 and April 2021.
A FINDING UNIQUE TO COVID-19
The elevated heart risks from infection did not appear to diminish over time, the study found.
“There’s no sign of attenuation of that risk,” said study author Dr. Stanley Hazen, who chairs the department of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Sciences at the Cleveland Clinic. “That’s actually one of the more interesting, I think, surprising findings.”
That finding is striking and seems to be unique to Covid-19, said Dr. Patricia Best, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who was not involved in the research.
“We have known for some time that infections raise your risk of having a heart attack, so that if
you have influenza, if you get any kind of infection … whether it’s bacterial or viral, that increases your risk of having a heart attack,” Best said. “But it generally goes away pretty quickly after your infection.
“This is just such a large effect, and I think it’s just because of how different Covid is than some of the other infections,” she said.
The researchers involved in the study say they don’t know exactly why Covid has such apparently long-lasting effects on the cardiovascular system.
Earlier studies have shown that the coronavirus can infect the cells that line the walls of blood vessels. The virus has also been found in sticky plaques that form in arteries that can rupture and cause heart attacks and strokes.
AI discovers 161,000
to organise and categorise all this disparate information, shedding light on the meaning of this dark matter for the first time.
The AI tool was trained to compute the dark matter and identify viruses based on sequences and the secondary structures of the protein that all
RNA viruses use for replication. It was able to significantly fast track virus discovery, which, if using traditional methods, would be time intensive.
Co-author from Sun Yatsen University, the study’s institutional lead, Professor Mang Shi said: “We used to rely on tedious bioinformatics pipelines for virus discovery,
“There might just be something that Covid does to the artery walls and the vascular system that is sustained damage and just continues to manifest over time,” said study author Dr Hooman Allayee, a professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.
Their working theory, Allayee said, is that Covid may be destabilizing plaques that are building within the walls of arteries and may make them more prone to rupturing and causing a clot.
SOME PROTECTIVE FACTORS
Allayee and his graduate student James Hilser took a closer look to see how Covid might be causing this long-term trouble in the body.
They looked to see whether people with known genetic risk factors for heart disease, or gene changes linked to being susceptible to Covid infection, were more likely than others to have a heart attack or stroke or to die after being hospitalised for Covid. But they weren’t.
What did show up, the researchers say, was a distinction by blood type.
Researchers have known that people with certain non-O blood types – A, B or AB – are at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Blood type also appears to play a role in how likely a person is to get Covid. People with O-type blood seem to be a bit protected there, too.
In the new study, people with O-type blood who were hospitalized for Covid didn’t have quite as high of a risk of heart attack or stroke as those with A, B or AB blood types.
But that doesn’t mean they were in the clear, Hazen said: They were still at higher risk of heart attacks and strokes, but their blood type was just another variable to consider.
The researchers believe that the gene that codes for blood type may be playing a role in the increased risk in heart attacks and strokes after Covid, but they aren’t sure exactly how.
There was some hopeful news in the study, too. People who were hospitalized for Covid but who were also taking low-dose aspirin had no increase in the likelihood of a subsequent heart attack or stroke. That means the risk can be mitigated, Hazen said.
“Cardiac disease and cardiovascular events are still the number one killer around the world,” he said.
When he sees patients, Hazen said, he now makes sure to ask about their Covid history.
“If you’ve had Covid, we have to be especially attentive to making sure that we’re doing everything possible to lower your cardiovascular risk,” Hazen said.
That includes controlling blood pressure and cholesterol and perhaps taking a daily aspirin.
The study didn’t look at the effects of Covid-19 vaccination on a person’s cardiovascular risk, but Hazen suspects that it would be protective, because vaccines usually keep Covid infections from becoming severe.
The study also didn’t dig into whether repeated Covid infections might be tied to even greater health risks, as some research has found.
Still, Hazen said, anyone who was hospitalized for Covid –whether vaccinated or not – should be attentive to their heart risks. (CNN)
which limited the diversity we could explore.
“Now, we have a much more effective AI-based model that offers exceptional sensitivity and specificity, and at the same time allows us to delve much deeper into viral diversity. We plan to apply this model across various applications.”
Co-author Dr Zhao-Rong Li, who researches in the Apsara Lab
of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, said: “LucaProt represents a significant integration of cuttingedge AI technology and virology, demonstrating that AI can effectively accomplish tasks in biological exploration.
“This integration provides valuable insights and encouragement for further decoding of biological sequences
and the deconstruction of biological systems from a new perspective. We will also continue our research in the field of AI for virology.”
Professor Holmes said: “The obvious next step is to train our method to find even more of this amazing diversity, and who knows what extra surprises are in store.” (Neuroscience)

Vitamin D supplements may help improve blood pressure, cholesterol, and insulin
A new, comprehensive review of existing, often conflicting, research on the benefits of vitamin D supplementation extracts a fresh view of its value in maintaining cardiometabolic health.
The authors of the meta-study found that taking a median dose of 3,320 International Units (IU) of vitamin D per day, or around 83 micrograms, was associated with several significant cardiometabolic benefits.
These benefits included reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, overall cholesterol, hemoglobin A1C—a marker of type 2 diabetes—and fasting blood glucose and insulin.
The researchers from China and the United States examined the details of 99 randomised, controlled trials (RCTs) published until March 26, 2024. The trials involved 17,656 participants and were conducted among widely varying populations in various global locations.
A key component of the
meta-study was a cataloging of differences between the RCTs that might explain their varying conclusions. Once those differences were understood, the authors of the meta-study could re-analyze and compare the RTCs’ data in a more balanced, apples-toapples manner.
The resulting findings were less hampered by conflicts, and a few special cases relating to specific populations emerged.
The researchers found vitamin D supplementation provided the greatest benefit to non-Westerners, people with lower levels of circulating vitamin D in their blood, people with a BMI of under 30, and people ages 50 and older.
WHY PREVIOUS FINDINGS ON VITAMIN D HAVE BEEN INCONSISTENT
Simin Liu, MD, ScD, professor of epidemiology, surgery, and medicine at Brown University, Providence, RI, and corresponding author of the meta-study, described
fasting blood glucose and insulin
some ways in which the RCTs differed from each other that caused them to arrive at different conclusions.
“Several main sources of heterogeneity in earlier studies that led to conflicting findings relating supplementation to cardiometabolic risk factors included ethnocultural background, age, body weight, and study participants’ circulating 25[OH]D levels at enrollment,” he said.
The level of serum 25[OH] D circulating in one’s blood is
considered the most reliable indicator of the body’s total vitamin D supplyTrusted Source, including naturally produced vitamin D from the skin and from dietary supplements.
Jayne Morgan, MD, cardiologist and the Executive Director of Health and Community Education at the Piedmont Healthcare Corporation in Atlanta, GA, who was not involved in the meta-study, noted another reason the medical community is not as confident regarding vitamin D as one might hope.
Still, “Here is where the data is leaning but [there is] nothing definitive yet regarding cardiovascular endpoints. So while there is not the standard of evidence-based data here, it certainly reaches the metric of evidence-informed,” Morgan said. “Further, there are benefits on bone health, muscle function, and reduced inflammation. It’s possible positive effects on both hypertension, diabetes, and lipids are worth watching as well,” she added. (Medicalnewstoday)
Experts discover factor during pregnancy they think causes autism
Scientists have grappled with the puzzle of autism’s origins for decades - now a study suggests a bad cold or flu during pregnancy could be a cause.
They’ve shown that when the mother’s immune system is ramped up in response to a viral infection, it can stunt the development of the growing baby’s brain.
Female embryos seemed protected from these effects, but one third of male embryos were impacted to some degree, according to the research on mice.
This aligns with the fact that autism is more prevalent in boys than girls, said the team from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in New York.
Researchers simulated a viral infection in mice and tracked the fetus’ reaction to how the mom’s immune system responded to a cold or flu virus, known as maternal immune activation (MIA).
MIA is activated when the immune system kicks into high gear, increasing the levels of cytokines and chemokines which
can cross the placenta and baby’s blood-brain barrier.
Chemokines fight the flu by moving other immune cells, like cytokines, to the site of the infection.
Cytokines are small immune cells that fight off harmful pathogens by summoning other immune cells through creating symptoms like fever, runny nose and body aches.
Because a fetus’ brain is so sensitive to environmental signals in the womb, this reaction can cause a wide range of behavioral issues including social impairments like autism spectrum disorder.
Irene Sanchez Martin, a postdoctoral student at CSHL, said that her recent experiments with mice showed that when the mother contracted a virus, the embryo’s brain development slowed.
‘The difference in my work is that I check what happened to the fetus’ 24 hours after exposure to maternal inflammation, rather than analyzing the behaviors of the offspring as adults.’
One of the most major
breakthroughs showed that although female embryos appeared to be protected from the MIA, about one-third of male embryos showed signs of a brain development deficit that was consistent with autism.
Additional research still needs to be conducted to unravel the connection between the immune system’s reaction to a virus and how it impacts the fetus.
More than 5.4 million people in the US are currently diagnosed with autism and 40 to 80 percent are likely related to genetics, but that still means 20 to 60 percent are caused by other factors.
Diagnosing early is crucial in autism because there are currently no treatments, and it takes years to test and diagnose the disorder.
Sanchez Martin said her research is still in the early stages and more needs to be conducted to definitively link cold and flu viruses to autism.
However, she is hopeful that future findings could help doctors recognize the early warning signs of autism before a child is born. (MSN.com)

Nadal announces his upcoming retirement from tennis
Tennis legend Rafael Nadal has announced his upcoming retirement from the sport after a glittering career in which he amassed 22 grand slam titles.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Nadal’s final tournament will be with Spain at the Davis Cup finals in November.
The 38-year-old last played at the Paris Olympics but continuing injury struggles, which have hampered him throughout his career, have severely limited his time on the court over the past two seasons.
“Hello everyone, I’m here to let you know that I am retiring from professional tennis,” Nadal said in a video posted on social media. “The reality is that is has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations.
“It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end.
“And I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined.”
Nadal, who was forced the skip last month’s Laver Cup over fitness concerns, announced last year that 2024 would likely be his last season on the tour.
His 22 grand slam titles are the second-most in history of men’s tennis behind only Novak Djokovic, his great long-time rival, as are his 36 Masters 1000 titles.
Nadal has also won singles and doubles gold for Spain at the Olympics and led his country to five Davis Cup titles.
Dubbed the “King of Clay” due to his remarkable dominance on the surface, Nadal won 14 of his grand slams at the French Open and lost just four of his 116 matches in Paris.
He also won the US Open four times and the Australian Open and Wimbledon twice, while his victory over Roger Federer in the
2008 Wimbledon final is widely considered the greatest tennis match of all time.
“I am very excited that my last tournament will be the final of the Davis Cup and representing my country,” Nadal added. “I think I’ve come full circle since one of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup
final in Seville in 2004. I feel super, super lucky for all the things I’ve been able to experience.
“I want to thank the entire tennis industry. All the people involved in this sport, my long-time colleagues, especially my great rivals. I have spent many, many hours with them and I have lived many moments that I will remember for the rest of
my life.
“Talking about my team is a little bit more difficult for me because in the end, my team has been a very important part of my life. They are not co-workers, they are friends. They have been by my side at all the times I have really needed them. Very bad moments, very good moments.” (CNN)
Jets’ Aaron Rodgers denies rumours he played role in Robert Saleh’s firing
Aaron Rodgers denied rumours that he was involved in the firing of New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh when he appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday.
The Jets fired Saleh on Tuesday after a disappointing 2-3 season start.
“As far as any of the ridiculous allegations out there, I’m not gonna spend more than one sentence in response to it and that is that I resent any of those accusations because they are patently false,” Rodgers told McAfee.
“It’s interesting the amount of power that people think that I have – which I don’t – but I love Robert and it was one of those days yesterday.”
While rumors swirled Tuesday following Saleh’s abrupt departure, Rodgers said he had a good relationship with the 45-year-old coach.
“I love Coach Saleh. We have a very solid relationship. We have since I met him in 2021 and had a nice conversation when they came and visited (the Green Bay Packers) for joint practices. He was a big reason why I came to the Jets,” Rodgers said of their
partnership. “I just had a lot of respect for him and so it was just a reminder yesterday how tough the business is.”
Despite denying rumors of his involvement, the 40-year-old admitted he spoke with franchise owner Woody Johnson the day before Saleh was dismissed.
“I did talk to Woody. Woody called me on Monday night. We had
a short conversation. I appreciated the call. It was a genuine call and he just asked me how I was doing.”
Rodgers said Johnson phoned to ask about the quarterback’s bangedup ankle from Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. Rodgers professed to the Jets owner that he was disappointed in his performance versus the Vikings and that the pair discussed how the
team could turn the season around.
Following Saleh’s shock departure, Rodgers touched on how quickly things can change in the industry and how days like Tuesday can be particularly difficult for all those involved.
“Yesterday was a day that reminds you of the simple fact that all of us who played know all too well, and that is that it’s a tough
business,” the 20-year veteran said. “It’s a beautiful profession. It’s incredible. It’s done so much for our lives, but it’s also a really tough business.”
The Super Bowl champion also reminded viewers that Saleh is not the only person impacted by the decision.
“I think what people can forget in this is not only is Robert a fantastic human being and a damn good football coach, he’s also a family man. He’s got seven kids. He’s got an incredible wife, and the business of football can be hard. Not just on those of us who are playing and coaching and doing personnel things and ownership, obviously, but it’s tough on the families.”
Rodgers said he had gotten to know Saleh’s family well during their time together, particularly Saleh’s son Adam, whom he said he would throw to at training camp. The Jets star later said he sends a big hug to Saleh’s son.
“Anybody who is kinda championing this decision, I would just appeal to the humanity of the situation and remind you there’s other people involved,” the fourtime NFL MVP added.

Greece beat dismal England for first time after late winner
England interim manager Lee Carsley’s all-out attacking strategy backfired badly as they slumped to a shock defeat by Greece in the Uefa Nations League at Wembley.
Jude Bellingham’s 87th-minute goal looked to have rescued a desperately disappointing England display after Vangelis Pavlidis gave Greece a deserved lead with a composed finish four minutes into the second half.
Greece responded to earn a deserved victory as Pavlidis struck again deep into stoppage time on a chastening night for England and interim boss Carsley.
In the absence of injured captain Harry Kane, Carsley went without a recognised striker by using Jude Bellingham in a false nine role and playing Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer.
The result was a disjointed, confused mess, as Carsley’s 100% record since succeeding
Gareth Southgate was ended by a well-organised Greece side, who actually had the ball in the net five times only to see three ruled out for offside.
England were fortunate to survive until four minutes after the break, especially when keeper Jordan Pickford was stranded outside his area early on and had to be rescued by Levi Colwill’s superb goalline clearance from Tasos Bakasetas, but it was no surprise when Pavlidis put Greece ahead with a fine finish.
The Greek players interrupted their celebrations to lift a shirt bearing the name of George Baldock, their former international colleague, who died on Wednesday aged 31.
Carsley, seeing his tactical plan failing, sent on strike duo Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke, winning his second full cap seven years after his first.
England pushed for an unlikely
victory after Bellingham fired high past Greece keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, but the visitors were a threat all night and punished Carsley’s side once more in a dramatic finale.
CARSLEY’S
PLOY BOLD BUT BADLY FLAWED
Carsley’s ambitious game plan of packing his side with attacking talent such as Bellingham, Palmer, Cole, Saka and Foden looked
More than 11 million fans have attended Major League Soccer matches this year, breaking the regular season attendance record. With 16 games still remaining before the start of the MLS Cup playoffs, the total has already surpassed the previous record of 10,900,804 set in 2023. The average attendance across the league is 23,240, and it is the third year in a row that MLS crowds
have totalled more than 10 million during the regular season.
The arrival of soccer icon Lionel Messi in July 2023 has likely played a significant part in the increase in attendance.
At just over 17,000, the average crowd for Inter Miami games, home and away, was the second smallest in the league in 2022. That number increased to 24,407 in 2023 as Messi signed for Miami
part of the way through the season, and to 29,778 in 2024 – the second highest in the league behind Atlanta United.
Two of the top three highest attendances this season have come at Inter Miami matches. The Herons’ 3-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium in April was watched by 72,610, the fourth-largest crowd in MLS history.
exciting on paper - but was exposed within minutes.
Greece, more structured, took advantage of this imbalanced England throughout as attacking areas were overcrowded, defensive areas left undermanned and Declan Rice overrun in central midfield as he tried in vain to plug the gaps left around him.
England keeper Pickford, normally so reliable for his country, added to the nerves with a hectic, error-strewn opening, the tone set
for a night when Greece were the more threatening side throughout, their supremacy only undermined by a habit of running offside in moments of over-excitement. Carsley ignored the claims of Solanke and Watkins to start, giving the team a focal point in attack, instead leaving players packing into areas in a classic “too many cooks” scenario. England’s front-loaded team left the defence vulnerable every time possession was turned over.
For the first time in its 147year history, Wimbledon will be removing line judges from all of its courts during the tournament.
The All England Club announced on Wednesday that from the 2025 championships onwards, electronic line calling (ELC) will be used after it was successfully tested in 2024.
ELC will replace the line judges who call “out” or “fault” during a match and will also be used in Wimbledon qualifying ahead of
the tournament.
Sally Bolton, the chief executive of the All England Club, said the decision was taken after a “significant period of consideration and consultation.”

Jessica Campbell made history on the opening night of the National Hockey League (NHL) season by becoming the first ever female assistant coach in the league.
Campbell was behind the bench as the Seattle Kraken took on the St. Louis Blues at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old was named an assistant coach in July by incoming head coach Dan Bylsma. The duo previously coached together with a Kraken minor league team.
“The year ahead is going to be a lot of fun. But to know and to understand that obviously there’s still at the forefront the thoughts of other women and other people who have the same aspirations as I do,” she told NHL.com. “So, to carry that torch every day and keep my focus
on being a coach, but it definitely puts meaning into the work.”
It was business as usual for the history-making Campbell during the season opener.
“Much like riding a bike,” the coach explained to ESPN after the opening period. “Been at this for a while now but definitely the emotions, the excitement and the energy just the start of a new year, so feeling it all.”
Campbell’s resume speaks for itself coming into her first season as an NHL coach.
As a player, the Kraken’s new assistant coach won the under-18 Women’s World Championship in 2010 after winning silver the previous year. Campbell also won silver in the 2015 Women’s World Championship.

Klopp to become Red Bull’s global head of soccer in first job since leaving Liverpool
Jürgen Klopp was announced as the global head of soccer for the Red Bull group on Wednesday in what will be his first job since leaving Premier League giant Liverpool earlier this year.
Klopp will assume the role with the Red Bull organization – which owns several clubs including RB Leipzig in Germany, RB Salzburg in Austria and New York Red Bulls in the US – on January 1, 2025.
“After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this,” Klopp said in a press release. “The role may have changed but my passion for football and the people who make the game what it is has not.
“By joining Red Bull at a global level, I want to develop, improve and support the incredible football talent that we have at our disposal.
“I see my role primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs,” he added, “but ultimately, I
am one part of an organisation that is unique, innovative and forward looking. As I said, this could not excite me more.”
In his new role with Red Bull, Klopp won’t be involved in the day-to-day running of the network of clubs but will instead “focus on supporting the sports directors in advancing the Red Bull philosophy,” a press release from the company said.
“He will also leverage his extensive network to aid in scouting top talent and contribute to the training and development of coaches.”
Klopp left Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season after a successful nine-year tenure at the club.
During his time in Liverpool, the German won almost every trophy possible including the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super League. Liverpool also finished runner-
up twice in the Champions League and once in the Europa League.
According to Sky Sports in Germany, Klopp has a clause in his contract with Red Bull allowing him to leave to become the German national team head coach should the position become available.
Klopp has long been linked to the Germany post. Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann currently occupies the role.
Before managing Liverpool, Klopp won the German league title twice with Borussia Dortmund.
“We are very proud of this outstanding and certainly the strongest signing in Red Bull’s soccer history,” Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of corporate projects and investments at Red Bull, said in a statement.
