– Says many Islanders on the wait list, while foreigners getting them with ease
The accusation - levelled this week by Hon Oswald Skippingscentres around the issuance license plates for native-owned taxis. In a Facebook post on Monday (August 29), the former leader stated: “It is becoming more and more difficult to quietly endure the audacious, challenging, and belittling insults from foreign nationals and non-native Turks and Caicos Islanders who have somehow managed to get opportunities and privileges that our natives Turks and Caicos Islanders are unable to acquire.

“We as native Turks and Caicos Islanders can no longer settle for being third class citizens who are ridiculed, discriminated against and victimized, while others are being given preferential treatment. “Persons in the system who choose to adapt this stinking and demeaning attitude for whatever reason towards native Turks and Caicos Island people who are deserving fair treatment and equal opportunities, should be kicked out of the system,” he stated. However, Williams advised that the persons who need to investigate the problems within the Road Safety department are the department heads, the permanent secretary and the Deputy Governor, as it is not within the government’s authority to instruct a public servant. The government-appointed member further advised: “While what you have expressed here may have some bearing [Skippings], what I think also needs to be said is that as TCIslanders, those of us who are in position of authority, have to do a better job at pushing and supporting our own.
Notably, Skippings’s frustration with the practice within the Road Safety Department was echoed by government appointed member in the House of Assembly, Hon Jamika“HonWilliams.Oswald Skippings thank you for highlighting this. It is true that there are several TCIslanders who are on a wait list to get taxi plates and are having difficulties with getting them.” She added: “The Department of Road Safety is headed by a TCIslander who uses his discretion as to who he awards taxi plates to. There is also a quota in place (which in my view is being mismanaged).”Theformer chief minister said he has been dealing with the issue for two months, but “enough is enough”, calling on the government to deal with the matter.
Skippings highlights “discriminatory”
“One such example is the situation with the Road Safety Department in Providenciales where native Turks and Caicos Islanders are unable to get license plates to fully operate their taxi business, and therefore deprived from operating at the airport from where the real financial benefits are derived.“Itis incredible yet true that while there are a few that find themselves in this discriminatory unfortunate situation, there is one particular gentleman that has had a taxi license since 2016 and in spite of endless efforts to get a plate or be allowed to operate at the Providenciales airport, he has been denied while persons who have recently acquired status have been given license plates.” Skippings has since called for those persons in positions of power who are responsible for the discriminatory practice to be “kicked out of the system.” He further alleged that “there are some that don’t even qualify to be given license plates, yet there are acquiring them with ease and boasting about it.”

“I had to ask the premier to invite the poll authority of Jamaica to TCI to give the exact same presentation to cabinet and other stakeholders here so that we too can see how to partner with our vendors and commercial operators to better improve our ports in our communities”, he added.
He noted that talks were also centred on enhancing measures to prevent“Securityoverstays.measures are already in place in Jamaica, for the management of visitors to our country, and especially on the side of ensuring their exit and them not overstaying and becoming irregular migrants.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is looking to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jamaica and the Bahamas to crack down on the transnational movement of “guns, drugs, and other undesirable goods”.Due to the proximity of the islands to the US, they are targets for these illegal activities. During a national press conference last week, Minister of Immigration and Border Security, Hon Arlington Musgrove said: “With the understanding of the movement of transnational shipment of guns, drugs, and other undesirable goods, I think it's important for us to understand the role the Jamaican government plays just through its global and regional position, so we will be seeking to commence discussion to enter into an MoU with Jamaica and The Bahamas on this matter.” This comes as Musgrove and Permanent Secretary of his Ministry, Ms Althea Been recently soaked up valuable information relating to matters of national security from their Jamaican counterparts.Musgrove and Been were part of a delegation led by Premier Washington Misick to the island nation on Sunday, August 14. Coupled with the discussions on the MoU, Musgrove said his meeting with the CEO of the Immigration Department within the Ministry of National Security, Mr Andrew Wynter and his team highlighted best practices on issues relating to inland security and the verification of documents.
“They have established an eligibility committee who assists in the decision making for the safety of staff in our line of business, there's always danger and risks to staff, so we got ideas on how we can better protect our staff.

“We were treated to an amazing presentation which clearly demonstrates the ways in which the organisation is literally transforming communities and improving the lives of the people through port and facility development and management in every major area and cargo port. “Due to the sensitive nature of the majority of our decision, I won't say much on this, but to say that we spoke on the following matters, security reports, scanning of containers, and importation permits for vehicles and borders, matters of funding for port development.”Musgrove described this engagement as “successful and very informative”.
He said that the meeting afforded the TCI team the opportunity to Prospective learners in the Turks and Caicos Islands will have the opportunity to study for a degree online by next September. Government should take a zerotolerance approach and demolish the structures and send the message to the offenders that these blatant illegal activities will not be tolerated. The offenders always knew the potential consequences of their actions. However, they would be more surprised if TCIG was to take the appropriate action instead since they have come to accept that we are a people who only talk and do no Theaction.continuance of these illegal activities is a serious threat to our national security and the social and economic fibre of these islands and all responsibilities for the clean-up should be laid at the feet of the UK. This is a big business!!!! Take the profit out of these illegal activities by immediately allocating the necessary resources to stop any new construction in the area until a plan is finalised to address the long-term problem.
‘Not too early to campaign for 2025’, appears to be the mindset of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), as the party is promising major improvements in the health sector if elected in the next general election. In a campaign-themed statement this week, Leader of the Opposition and PDM leader, Hon Edwin Astwood laid out what a PDM government will do for the people of TCI should they recapture the government.Themainfactor being rebuilding the healthcare system of the territory and continuing the work they had already started during theirHonadministration.Astwoodpointed to issues residents raised with him regarding a lack of clinical services at the territory’s two hospitals.

“A good health system under a PDM Government would ensure that our on-island hospitals deliver high-quality secondary or tertiary levels of care to increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes.”Astwood stated that a PDM government will be committed to continuing the work it started of ensuring health services are: “Effective by providing evidencebased healthcare services to those who need them; safe by avoiding harm to people for whom the care is intended; and people-centred by providing care that responds to individual preferences, needs and values.” He said to realise the benefits of quality health care, a PDM Government will also ensure that the TCI’s health services are: “Timely by reducing waiting times and sometimes harmful delays; equitable by providing care that does not vary in quality on account of constituency or island location, and socio-economic status, ethnicity.“Integrated by providing care that makes available the full range of health services throughout the life course, that is, from newborn to old age; and efficient by maximizing the benefit of available resources and avoiding waste.”Theopposition leader stated that the healthcare system under the PNP government is not serving the peopleAdding:well. “We the PDM are confident that we can deliver the health care system that our citizens need and deserve.”
“And when I investigated what clinical services are accessible in Grand Turk, it is extremely far less than being offered at Cheshire Hall.”The party leader said several patients have alerted him to the difficulty they have experienced getting an appointment to be seen, with many expressing that they feel neglected by the healthcare facilities.Hepointed to the work started when he was the minister of health to re-establish old community clinics, saying that a PDM government will continue to work to ensure a “Good Health System” for the islands.
YES, they are afraid, because there are too many in government that are getting kickbacks and taking $$ to turn a blind eye. To expose one will be like a brick wall coming down, brick by brick. They are not enforcing the laws, and that is why it is proceeding illegally as it is. This is on a ministry that has failed and is still failing.
“I am very concerned about the lack of clinical services being made available to our citizens at both the Cockburn Town hospital, Grand Turk, and the Cheshire Hall Hospital, Providenciales.

Tread very, very carefully. The resident privileged class here is an unusually small minority. The conclusion of an apartheid policy always leads to violence. The impoverished always rebel eventually. This is politically very complex.

situationDelicate Moving forward would depend on not only pulling down these structures but creating alternative living conditions for persons living there. It should be done through the construction of apartment complexes, with a minimum rent attached to it, this would not only provide a safe place for migrants, some of whom are legitimate in the TCI, but it will provide a means of structure and progress. Having a small rent in place would mean that the TCI government can make back any money spent in the long run.

Minister of Physical Planning, Infrastructure and Development (PPID), Hon Akierra Missick said during an interview on Expressions radio show, the Government is not shying away from dealing with the issue of illegal settlements.
BY DELANA ISLES Leader of the Opposition, Hon Edwin Astwood is underwhelmed by the government’s report of their overseas summer activities, especially when the people of the Islands are still suffering. Employing his now-familiar slogan for the PNP government – ‘out of touch’ – Hon Astwood said he tuned in to last Friday’s press conference with the hope of hearing what the government intends to do to address the real issues of the people. “I wanted to hear their plans to deal with the cost of living, food and fuel cost, power cost, jobs, illegal immigration, unemployment, and underemployment.”Instead, theparty leader said the people only heard about how well the Premier and his ministers were received by the institutions they visited over the summer so far. “A press conference to talk about the welcome reception the Premier received during his travels is not the priority of the people, and it in no way addresses the issues facing our people. “This only confirms how out of touch this PNP government is,” Astwood stated.
“A - Where the current Electricity Ordinance allows for alternative energy production, the government of the day should seek investment in the alternative energy sector. “B - I challenge this PNP government that if they truly care for the people of this country, they will take the small sum of $10,000,000 from the huge surplus that we have, to buy and distribute 1Kw solar panel system to all citizens who own a home, to help reduce the burden on our people.
electricity costs, Astwood recalled that previously the Premier stated that he will get involved with the electricity provider and the issue of escalating prices on the consumers, who can hardly afford to pay. “The position now that unless Fortis does something, he will not intervene is not acceptable and a total abdication of responsibility as a government.“Inatime like this, the Turks and Caicos Islands Government, even if this PNP administration does not perceive it, retains sufficient powers and policy scope to do something.”

As a result, the party leader has five suggestions, namely:
“E - Any taxes or import duties on fuel for the production of electricity should be removed and regulations should be in place to ensure that savings are passed onto theAstwoodconsumer.”stated that there is a lot that can be done “but it requires care and a willingness by the government”.

The Bellefield Landing Welcome Centre project this week took another significant step towards completion.InJune, the building of the welcome centre began construction, and this week, the Ports Authority revealed that the roof of the building has been installed.
“C - With the claim of so much money in the Treasury they should be financing and subsidising local business start-ups in the alternative energy sector. “D - The government should initiate meaningful talks with Fortis to prepare acceptable legislation to enable any savings from the production of alternative energy to be passed onto the consumer.
The party leader posited that the measures that were introduced by the PNP government to tackle inflation and the cost of living are not having any impact. “It is felt that their measures are having the opposite effect, that is, prices continue to rise, the cost of living is getting higher, people are finding it harder to pay bills and buy food, and electricity bills continue to rise.” He stated that while the $1,000 was welcomed by all, the government appears to have no real plans to help the people in the long“Whereterm. are those policies, and where are those real plans? What is being done for the most vulnerable of our citizens, the unemployed and the underemployed, and what about senior citizens on pensions?” He is proposing that the government now consider giving direct monetary assistance to pensioners, the unemployed, and those citizens who make under $3,000 per month. “This could be an additional $500 or $1,000 to these vulnerable groups who are being hit the hardest by the very high cost of living facing our people.”

ISSUES OF IMPORTANCE
To build the human capacity of its people, the TCI Government turned to the University of the West Indies (UWI) to strengthen its relationship with the regional academy as well as Howard University in Washington D.C.
On Monday, August 15, Premier Honourable Charles Washington Misick, and a team comprising of the Hon Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education met with Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and members of the University’s Executive Management Team to advance discussions on partnerships to improve access and efficiency in learning within the TCI education sector.Reporting on the meeting, Premier Misick said strengthening cooperation with UWI is critical towards building the human capacity among the Islands’ citizens.“Aswe develop, and expand our education policy, we want to make sure that we have the best community college or the best educational framework in the region,” he said at a press conference on Thursday, August 25.He continued: “And so we're doing everything that we can to ensure that the quality of education that we deliver here and the ability for that to transfer into institutions abroad as our students exit institutions here and move on to other institutions, that those qualifications will catapult them forward.“Sowe had that very critical, important meeting with UWI to try to build and strengthen that relationship.“Wealso met with at the University of Technology in Jamaica, another alma mater of mine…they have specialised programme that we could benefit from.”As part of the dialogue, joint degree programmes in several study areas were discussed including business studies and socialHonwork.Taylor said: “In our discussions, we spoke about joint degree programmes in key areas such as degrees in primary education and secondary education.
“We also had the opportunity to visit the University of Technology, we looked particularly at the skills gap in relation to quality surveying, construction engineering, land survey, GIS, construction managers, computing and Information Technology, sports, athletic training, arts of science, and“Therecoaching.is also a Technology Innovation Center, which is the first of its kind in the Caribbean— it is actually there at Utech so this was quite pleasing for us to learn”, she added.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY Following the visit to Jamaica, the delegation visited the campus of Howard University on Thursday, August 18, and made a courtesy call on the university’s 17th President, Dr Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D. The delegation sat with President Frederick to discuss ways in which the Turks and Caicos Islands can reignite the relationship once shared with the institution and strengthen the TCI’s ability to access another worldclass learning facility.
Hon Taylor made a case for programmes relating to areas of national interest for the TCI’s continued development including sciences, business, technology, and the performing arts. Howard University was founded in 1867 and produced some of the top African American men and women in the United States. It has also educated some of TCI’s most prominent young professionals. The Premier was also accompanied by former Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands and current PAHO/WHO Country Programme Advisor (Caribbean), Dr the Honourable Rufus Ewing; Deputy Permanent Secretary, Office of the Premier and Public Policy, Mr Miquel Swann; and Aide De Camp, Mr Bently Johnson.
Taylor said: “We looked at the curriculum content and the quality assurance protocols. “It is critical that the course offerings are in alignment with the needs of the country and many times you would have heard me speak to the 2017 skills gap study of the Turks and Caicos Islands.“Soin our discussions, those areas were deemed critical for us to see how best we can have course offerings in partnership with the various“Capacityuniversities.Building of the TCICC lectures was also discussed with UWI to enable our lecturers to receive training in the delivery of lessons as they do have the knowledge but not necessarily the teaching background.” She stressed that this is not unique to the Turks and Caicos Islands as the Mona Campus at the University of the West Indies has recently implemented a policy where all new lecturers recruited to teach at the campus must undergo a capacity-building course to ensure effective delivery of courses.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is looking to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the University Hospital of the West Indies to train nursing students from the TCI. This forms part of the Government’s efforts to bolster the TCI Community College (TCICC) Nursing programme, according to the Minister of Education, Labour, Employment & Customer Services, Hon Rachel Taylor. The proposed partnership stems from a recent visit to Jamaica, where Hon Taylor, Minister of Education, Employment, Labour and Customer Service; Wesley Clerveaux, Permanent Secretary, Premier Hon Washington Misick and other government officials visited UWI’s Regional Headquarters in Jamaica. They met with Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and members of the University’s Executive Management Team to advance discussions on the partnership.Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, August 25 Hon Taylor said discussions relating to the MoU were fruitful and the partnership is looking “quite healthy”.She pointed out that the partnership with UWI Hospital will also include internship placements for TCI’s nursing students.
In May this year, the Education Ministry in collaboration with the TCICC, Inter Health Canada and the Ministry of Health reinstated the nursing programme to better equip nursing students at the community college with the requisite skills and knowledge in the medical field.

The students who had already completed three years of theory at the TCICC embarked on an 18-month practicum at the InterHealth Canada Hospital. She said: “The students had their theory component of the course, but they were not privy to actually receive their internship. “So this meeting was actually to discuss the memorandum of understanding between the University of the West Indies and the TCI Community College, giving our seven students who are currently at InterHealth Canada, the opportunity to travel to Jamaica, to continue the remainder of their six months at the hospital at the University of the West Indies. “We are aware that Interhealth Canada is a level two hospital and as such, these students will not have the benefit of full exposure to all areas of medicine, which is offered at a level three hospital Hon Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education, Employment, Labour and Customer Service

“Our medical students who have completed their studies, and going through their residency had discussions with us in terms of wanting the opportunity to do their residency at the University of the West Indies, rather than at Spanish Town hospital.” In order for this particular change to take effect, the Turks and Caicos Government will have to consult with the Minister of Health from Jamaica, Taylor explained.
She added that this is necessary because the “University of the West Indies is not responsible for placing the residency students, so that has to be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, so that is just discussion that we will continue to have”.

The end of time as we know it is rapidly approaching and the defining characteristic of the twenty-first century is the “Clash of Civilizations.” Undoubtedly, an unfortunate ‘cultural shift’ is upon us, as we grapple with the idea of how this new chapter of our lives will play out in the final days of the existence of society in the TCI and the world around us! The evidence of this critical moment is dramatized throughout, and the answers are documented in the Scriptures. However, the outcome depends on the willingness of the authorities to observe and act; coupled with, the desire of individuals, and civic society to address this paradigm shift. For decades now, popular culture – especially entertainment, media objects and secular music trends have fashioned our social lives. Focusing on music, Billboard's top five artists in October 2021 featured songs by Polo G, Lil Nas X, Silk Sonic, Justin Bieber and The Weeknd, respectively – all of which contain contents, which are demeaning and either promote violence, sexual immorality, or lavishTheselifestyles.songs are antichrist in nature and not recommended for listening. Sadly, the damage is already done, as these demonic songs, at the time, had more than 300 million views – collectively. In a similar vein, real fashionista from dominant cultures is taking fashion trends too far, promising to bring dramatic changes to TCI cultural scape. For decades, seminudity was only viewable from television shows and magazines and lately, changing dynamics have made it accessible through theFastinternet.forward, denuded bodies are just eyes away. Just step into any major restaurant, supermarket, fried chicken shacks or on Grace Bay Road and you’re certain to encounter women wearing just enough polyester, barely covering three distinct parts of their bodies, leaving other body parts exposed. Not too long ago, women were circumspect about dressing in this way, even in their private spaces, upholding community standards, as these vile outfits are deemed socially unacceptable. Today, it has become a public spectacle, even in the TCI. I am aware that this is a touchy subject and to those who disagree with this view, I’d ask, what message do you think this trend is conveying to young females? And if this is socially unacceptable in those dominant cultures, why establish it here?
I believe, that if this public display goes unnoticed, it becomes the passport for young females growing up to perceive this as ‘cool’ and accept the new normal as a legitimate subculture; therefore, don’t be appalled if moments from now, young women in the TCI trade decency to adapting a similar standard! However, if there are genuine concerns about this public attire, it should propel everyone to address the situation. The Scripture is clear on this matter and; therefore, the church should be at the forefront.

Also, think about the names that people called you. Weren’t you impacted by it? Calling someone a negative name may impact someone’s selfworth. Some people have even committed suicide due to these negativities. You see some people have been called negative names from their homes and so they think that is who they are. That is why it is important for us to have a positive home environment so at least when people go into the community, hopefully, they will remember the positive things spoken at home and so they will be not bothered by what is spoken to them there. One way to counteract negative calling is to be positive and to speak positive things over the lives of individuals. Parents no matter how your children look or act, don’t say anything negative to your children. Encourage their siblings and friends to say something positive to one another. The more positive things that you instil in others, the more they can think positively about themselves.Another way to overcome negative calling is not to respond with a negative calling. I know sometimes people may tell you if someone call you a negative name, you should also call them a negative name. This does not solve anything. In fact, it makes matters worst because it may become confrontational and end up in violence.Ifsomeone calls you a negative name, talk to someone about it. Don’t be like me. I kept everything to myself, smiling on the outside but suffering on the inside. I believed if I had talked to someone about what was going on, I would not have suffered that long from low self-esteem. The thing is if you don’t say anything to someone, people may not know what you are going through and if they do not know what you are going through, then no one can help you. I hope after reading this article, you become conscious of the impact that name-calling has on individuals. Negative name-calling is so mean. Why do we have to be mean to others? Let us be kind to one another.
Let us stop the negative name-calling

The naked truth about the spread of nudism
If you have been following my writings or reading my book, you would know that I suffered from an inferiority complex, and it all started from negative name calling. Thankfully, I have overcome this painful experience. I was tested recently when someone called me ugly three times and this prompted me to write this article. Too many people are speaking negative words. Parents are saying negative things to their children and when children become what they spoke over their lives, they wonder why their children are like that. Siblings are calling each other negative names. The power of life and death is in the tongue. We are killing people by the very words we speak, and we are interfering with their destination. Many people are suffering from low self-esteem just because of name-calling. Unfortunately, some of us do not even realise what we are doing. If you keep calling someone dumb, they may become dumb. You called someone nasty, they become nasty. You call someone stupid; they may become stupid. You called someone an idiot; they may become an idiot. By calling people these names, we are basically putting a curse on the lives of these individuals. If you don’t think this is true, think about some of the people who you addressed negatively.
Paul the Apostle impress upon women to dress modestly with decency and propriety, as documented in 1 Timothy 2:9,10 and in 1 Corinthians 6:19.20, he exhorts, your bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit; therefore, honour God with it. Few things in our society are so evidently coherent and straightforward, while simultaneously, long overdetermined – and even mystified – by the ornate layers of socioculture-inspired definition, as the unclothed body. We must consult the Scriptures, constructively discuss this issue, and foster societal standards!

Now, there is enough truth in that for us to spend time working on becoming the best leader we can be, but there is also enough of a red flag there to cause us to pause and think a bit deeper. The danger we have to be aware of is thinking and acting like every single problem an organisation or family faces can be fixed if only we had a great leader at the helm. That is what I mean when I use the term magical leadership, it is the idea that “only” leadership is needed to achieve greatness in whatever endeavour is pursued. Leadership is necessary and important, don’t get me wrong, you should try and be the best leader you can possibly be, but leadership is not the only ingredient needed to make a great organisation.Iknow a leader who was applauded for doing a great job in getting a venture off the ground and then, as that venture grew, seeing some measure of success and recognition. From the outside, it looked like this leader personally embodied all that was good about leadership. At least that was what others thought, and to a certain extent, that thought crept into this leader’s heart also. It was even whispered that the principles which worked in that venture should be bottled and used as a model for others. This is an example of what magical leadership looks like. The idea is that if it works and is successful it has to be only because of the great leader steering the ship. Forgotten was the unique context in which this leader was placed, a context and time that could not be replicated. Also forgotten was the reality that great ventures are the result of great leaders and great people.Africans who were forcefully made to work in appalling conditions on plantations in the United States of America created a genre of music that W.E.B. DuBois called “sorrow songs”, today we call them “negro spirituals”. One of the more popular songs from that genre goes like this, Wade in the water Water in the water, children Wade in the water God’s gonna trouble the water

Magical leadership does not work
For the past several weeks we have looked at how Joshua, Israel’s leader, and military strategist, exemplified what leadership for moving forward looks like. We have looked at a number of valuable leadership qualities and actions that help to make a great leader. So, as we get closer to the end of the first five chapters of Joshua that detail his leadership preparation and practice, this point needs to be made. Magical leadership does not work. Let me explain. One of the first articles in this series looked at leadership through one of John Maxwell’s best leadership quotes, “everything rises and falls on leadership”.
There are a few things I really dislike about travelling. I don't like sudden turbulence, overpriced airport snacks, endless security queuing and really cold hotel rooms. Wouldn’t it be lovely to be teleported directly to your final destination without any of these faffing? I am almost certain that I am not alone. During my much-anticipated trip to New York City, I did something I would have never done five years ago! I took a fivehour bus from Midtown New York to Boston_ all alone! But you know what… I am so glad I did. So from NYC to Boston, here are the latest eight musts in both cities before winter comes. You do not need to be Sarah Jessica Parker to have an incredible time in the city, there is something for us all. Here are a few:

It has been said that this song reflected the Israelites' deliverance and journey from Egypt to the land promised to their ancestors. It is a song that speaks about a hopeful future in the midst of a difficult present. For a moment imagine the Israelites camped on the overflowing banks of the Jordan watching a fertile Canaan and being told that to get to Canaan, they have to first cross the overflowing Jordan. Imagine hearing that God was going to stop the river from flowing so that the Israelites could pass through. Imagine the first dude who had to step into the water and get his feet wet. We do not even know his name. But it was his obedience, courage, and faith in God and Joshua that made it possible for those who came after him to walk on dry ground, even while his feet were wet. The great leader Joshua had a bunch of great no-name people following him. Joshua’s leadership was not magical leadership, if he did not have a great group of people around him, nothing would have happened. Leader, love your people, take care of them, they are making you look good.

In a booming economy, how can TCI get the most out of direct foreign investments?
On August 24 and 25, Hon Kyle Knowles, through the Wheeland Community Foundation, along with the ministry of health successfully hosted its inaugural Wheeland Community Health Check initiative in the parking lot of the Bethany Baptist Church, in Providenciales. Speaking on the initiative this week, Hon Knowles stated that recognizing the importance of health and overall wellbeing – both mentally and physically - amongst the Wheeland Community, particularly with the elderly in mind, the Wheeland Community Foundation saw it fit to provide the residents of Wheeland with the opportunity to examine the state of their health without having to leave the community, offering an element of convenience. At the event, eye examinations, dental checks, blood pressure checks as well as diabetic testing were done, with the support of staff of the ministry of health.
He has extended special thanks to the Ministry of Health and doctors at the Ophthalmology department for making the event possible.“The Wheeland Community looks forward to upholding their commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the residents of Wheeland by continuing to organise initiatives such as this,” he said, urging residents of the community to keep tuned to their social media pages for updates on similar events.
An initiative-taking move by the elected representative for the Wheeland and West Caicos last week saw residents getting their health status checked and other necessary tune-ups. ‘The health of a nation is said to be the wealth of a nation,’ and with Covid-19 still nipping at our collective heels and the recently discovered case of monkey-pox in the territory, it is an adage worth taking seriously.
service jobs. Not to take anything away from these kinds of jobs, but traditionally they are held by migrant workers and come with low-paying wages unless you’re in top management positions. Erecting more and more hotels mean there will be a need for more transportation, which drives the demand for more vehicles and additional access roads. There will also be a need for more grocery stores and products on demand etc. What our citizens would like to see more from our politicians, is a stronger push for foreign investments in our basic infrastructure needs. This may require more community-driven discussions to help determine the pathway.Arguably, there isn’t enough emphasis being placed on these critical areas to support such growth. For example, there is a growing need for a public transportation system, farming on a larger scale, waste management and recycling opportunities, etc. These types of investments will help to alleviate a number of our socio-economic issues.
“The event was a resounding success, with many residents coming out to support the initiative and take advantage of the services offered,” the MP said.
Perhaps, the creation of higher paying jobs for our people, and jobs that will attract citizens in the diaspora who may have the necessary skill sets beneficial to our country’s development. With wages not keeping up with the growing rate of inflation, our people also need real paying jobs that match their qualifications, not just any jobs. If we fail to change course, I'm afraid we run the risk of losing more of our young people to crime or migration as we have seen over theWeyears.cannot and should not let big foreign investors dictate the outcomes for TCI without giving back to our communities in a meaningful way. This could be in the form of direct investment in trade schools, banking, reefs and sea life sustainability projects, etc. This is our moment Turks Islanders!Inafree enterprise economy like ours, the truth to the matter is, that the strength of our democracy will only work when everyone has an Notopportunity.onlyshould our country be in a position to attract private investment but to retain and leverage it for inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Bermuda: 300 plus passengers left stranded after AA flight diverted
“At 12.40 a.m. this morning [Monday], American Airlines flight 38 en route from Miami, Florida to London Heathrow, arrived at the L.F. Wade International Airport with 317 persons on board having diverted to the island due to a mechanical issue,” the spokesman said.“The aircraft, a Boeing 777300, landed safely and without incident. All passengers and crew deplaned the aircraft at 1.10 a.m. and were housed in the international departures lounge of the new terminal as American Airlines officials advised that they were unable to find a sufficient number of available hotel rooms to accommodate all persons from the flight. “The airline made light refreshments available for passengers before having meal options catered by late morning. The airport duty-free and retail shops, the bar and restaurant facility and the Prime class VIP Lounge with shower facilities were all open and available to passengers during the Accordingday.”to UK news reports, some passengers claimed they were “abandoned” — and that facilities at the airport were not satisfactory. THE British Virgin Islands recorded its 64th Covid-related death since the start of the pandemic two years ago, according to an epidemiological summary issued Tuesday by Health Ministry officials. No information on age or the gender of the deceased was provided. Based on the dashboard summary, there are currently 23 active cases in the territory, with 20 on Tortola and three on Virgin Gorda. No cases are listed for Anegada and Jost Van Dyke or on vessels. The dashboard noted that there are three persons currently hospitalized.Thelastdeath was recorded on JuneSince1. the pandemic began in 2020, the territory has lugged a total of 7,291 cases. To date, 18,211 residents have been fully vaccinated and 1,231 partially vaccinated, meaning they’ve received a first shot, but not the second.
Lo said passengers waited for more than three hours until their first update on the situation, and it only became clear they would need to sleep at the airport at about 5 a.m. local time when airport staff provided them with blankets and pillows taken from the aircraft itself.“We feel abandoned by the airline really … literally in the middle of the Atlantic. When we landed, we didn’t know how long it was going to be. Had we been kept updated regularly, we would have been able to make plans and I’m sure the airport staff would have been able to make plans quicker.”
The Ministry of Health office has said the territory’s residents in Tortola, Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke can call the above number, and will be directed to a specific clinic on the island they live on. (Virginislandsdailynews)

“In this instance, the decision for arranging accommodations is not one to be made by the Ministry of Health. The airline must organise hotel rooms for its passengers in such situations. At no time did American Airlines communicate a desire to have its passengers landed to transfer them to a hotel, even if only for the day. “The Port Health team at the Ministry of Health stood ready to administer supervised antigen tests for all passengers – as we have done for passengers on previous diverted flights. However, the airline did not make that“Thedecision.Ministry of Health’s compliance team also stood by in case a decision was made to allow the passengers to leave the building and stretch their legs in a designated area. A COMMUNITY activist has criticised Haitian Embassy officials for not doing enough to help relatives of victims of a migrant boating tragedy collect theirLoubyremains.Georges told The Tribune the administration at the embassy is a “bit lax”. He also claimed that Chargé d’Affaires for the Haitian Embassy, Anthony Brutusm, has been recalled following criticisms of his performance in office. Mr Georges posted the news on Facebook yesterday adding that Mr Brutus is now the “former” Chargé d’Affaires. “You would note that he was the one who recently misspoke at a recent press conference when he said that there are 150,000 Haitians in The Bahamas. His tenure was one of, if not the worst, for Haitians seeking services and documents at the Embassy,” he wrote.
Haiti embassy ‘did not do enough’ after migrant boat tragedy best to say, you know what, we will take your contacts or we’ll be in contact with us for the next few days. Let us see how best we can make contact with the coroners and to facilitate the process on your behalf.“But what I’ve found is that when I contacted the chargé for this particular family that is quoted in the article, he simply sent over the (numbers) for coroners and said that they can make contact themselves.”MrGeorges noted some of the relatives of the migrant victims are not residents of The Bahamas.
FREE National Movement chairman Dr Duane Sands said this week that it is difficult to take the Prime Minister seriously on inflation warnings when his administration is spending so much money.DrSands’ comments came after Prime Minister Phillip “Brave” Davis recently urged Bahamians to be frugal with their spending habits due to the rising inflation and cost of living in the country. Earlier this month, John Rolle, the Central Bank’s governor, warned locals to brace for higher inflation rates, saying the cost of living crisis facing many Bahamian families has yet “to peak.” In an interview with The Tribune, Dr Sands said the Davis administration has not been “frugal” in its spending and has abused the tax dollars of Bahamians.“Thegovernment of The Bahamas has been extracting tax dollars, every dollar they could get out of the pockets of struggling Bahamians. Because they have an insatiable appetite to travel, to live high on the hog, to give consultancies up to $60 million, and to hire in every single government agency and ministry. To give jobs to all of the connected at the same time, they have made a decision that they don’t have the ability to reduce VAT on bread basket items, on medication, on insurance, or on the cost of fuel. Why? because they need that money and they need it bad,” Dr Sands said. He continued: “So when you now have the prime minister saying, you know, ‘be frugal,’ be frugal with what, you want me to not pay my rent and pay my light bill? You want me to buy gas, but don’t buy food, what you want me to be frugal on? Because you didn’t leave me with nothing.”
“These are persons that maybe at one point did live here, but then moved on to the States or probably never lived here in The Bahamas and so because they’re not in the jurisdiction, they need that assistance,” he explained. He roughly estimated around six or seven of the victims have already been buried so far. When contacted yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell could not confirm if Mr Brutus has been recalled, saying no formal communication has been sent to his ministry. (Tribune242)
Bahamas: ‘If inflation is so bad, stop spending money’ their favourite individuals, right? They got to get it from somewhere so they’re going into your pocket to take it. They are hiring who they want to hire, not because of need, but because of patronage. They’ve brought back, I believe, 14 retired senior civil servants or permanent secretaries, retired. And now you can say, you should be frugal. Well, show me the frugality of the government.” Dr Sands questioned when the government would make the necessary changes to cut down on its own spending. He said: “When are you going to say that there is a government policy that says for cabinet ministers or senior executives, everybody will travel economy? When are you going to insist that we are going to limit the size of delegations that are travelling? When are you going to say that we are not going to spend all of this money on consultancies? If you looked at the statement by the minister of education, she said on her feet in the House of Assembly, that school repairs would (cost) $15 million. Now the minister of works comes back and said it was $30 million, but it’s not just repairs as capital works. But when you go into the budget, you don’t see it ain’t there.” Dr Sands also questioned whether Mr Davis was clear on the Central Bank’s comments on inflation. “I’m not sure the prime minister knows what the central banks of the world are saying because are they thinking that they’re going to increase interest rates or decrease interest rates, because in that statement, he said they were going to do both. So, let’s, let’s make a determination of what exactly Bahamians are being asked to do,” he Drsaid.Sands said if the government wants Bahamians to be frugal, then the administration’s actions should match their words. He stressed: “It’s very difficult to take the prime minister seriously when his government is spending more money than any other government in the history of The Bahamas.”
The chairman noted that the government has the choice to reprioritise its spending habits to aid in the financial struggles of Bahamians, however, they chose notDrto. Sands explained that the Davis administration is setting a different standard when it comes to frugality because the administration is not showing the same discipline in its leadership. “If the government has no discipline with spending, the government is giving out $2 million dollars and $3 million to
The news comes after Mr Brutus received backlash for comments he made about the number of Haitians living in The Bahamas in the wake of last month’s boating tragedy that left 17 Haitian migrants dead, including a pregnant woman. Labour and Immigration Minister Keith Bell believes the remarks were “irresponsible” and “callous” and also called the claim “unfounded”.Meanwhile, Mr Georges’ critique came after an article in a local daily describing the struggle one of the victim’s relatives, who lives aboard, was facing travelling to identify and claim the body. Mr Georges told this newspaper yesterday: “Maybe they themselves don’t understand these things - the processes. Maybe they lack the will to go out there and do everything within their power – I don’t know if it is resources to ensure and like you just said to mitigate should families reach out. You know, for example, if they saw the news stories, if the families reached out to them. “I would think that it would be Dr Duane Sands said that the Davis administration is setting a different standard when it comes to frugality.

Investors, worried about the riskiness of lending to the government, demanded higher returns for doing so, making it more expensive for the country to borrow money. In August, the yields, or the effective interest rate you would get, on some of those bonds have jumped the most since 1994.Colin Ellis from ratings agency Moody’s told the BBC’s Today programme the jump in yields needed to be put in context. “Energy bills are very very high, and set to go up again. which means inflation is going to be high and that the Bank of England is raising interest rates in “Thoseresponse.expectations for higher interest rates are part of what’s driving these moves in the bond market at the moment.” However, he said: “We still have a stable outlook on our UK government rating so we see the risk as broadly balanced. In the centre of the picture, a large area of dark blue shows the Indus overflowing and flooding an area around 100 kilometres (62 miles) wide, turning what were once agricultural fields into a giant inland lake. It’s a shocking transformation from the photo taken by the same satellite on the same date last year, which shows the river and its tributaries contained in what appear by comparison to be small, narrow bands, highlighting the extent of the damage in one of the country’s hardest-hit areas. This year’s monsoon is already the country’s wettest since records began in 1961, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, and the season still has one month to go. Kelly was charged with obstruction of justice in connection with that trial. Jane and her mother have testified this year that Kelly bullied them into silence. Jane did not testify at the 2008 trial, and Kelly was acquitted. Multiple jurors said they didn’t convict Kelly because the girl from the video did not testify. This time was different. Jane took the stand and identified herself as the girl and Kelly as the attacker. Kelly’s attorneys have not yet challenged that account. Jane described Kelly’s process of grooming her, saying he began calling her and saying sexual things almost immediately. She said Kelly started groping her at age 14 and that by 15 he “started penetration.”Kellythen had sex with Jane “uncountable” times over the next three years, she said. Days later, one of Jane’s middle school classmates testified that Jane introduced her to Kelly while they were teenagers. The alleged victim, testifying under the pseudonym Pauline, said Kelly sexually abused her more than 100 times while she was a minor. When Kelly’s attorney questioned her inexact recollection, Pauline responded, “Whether it is once or twice, what’s wrong is wrong.” Jurors had the day off on Wednesday before the defense began presenting its case on Thursday. Closing arguments are scheduled to begin about a week later. Defense attorneys have not said if Kelly will testify in his own defence. He did not testify in the New York trial that led to his 30yearTwosentence.menassociated with Kelly, Derrel McDavid and Milton Brown, are also defendants in the case. McDavid is accused of helping Kelly prevent Jane from testifying at the 2008 trial. Brown is charged with receiving child pornography. They have both pleaded not guilty. (NYDailynews)
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power dazzling but slow, say critics
R Kelly is already set to serve 30 years in prison after he was convicted last year in Brooklyn federal court.
Prosecutors rest case in R. Kelly child porn trial in Chicago
Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movie trilogy were box office hits from 2001 to 2003. Speaking to the BBC last year he revealed The Beatles had attempted to make their own version before it vetoed by Tolkien. Fans were given the first glimpse at footage from Amazon’s latest prequel in February. And after the first two episodes were viewed by critics, The Financial Times noted how the series, despite its “dazzling visuals” and “epic dialogue” can “quickly become monotonous” and “has yet to find its large, furry feet”.The Telegraph also awarded three stars saying the show was “slow, sprawling - and lovely”, with largely the “swashbuckling Galadriel” to thank for keeping it on the move.
“It might take a second to get accustomed to these new characters, but the signs are that it will be worthwhile,” Helen O’Hara wrote.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be released from September 2.
FEDERAL prosecutors rested their case against R. Kelly on Tuesday at his federal trial in Chicago. Kelly, 55, faces several charges including child pornography, enticing minors for sex and obstruction of justice. He’s already set to serve 30 years in prison after he was convicted last year in Brooklyn federal court. In Chicago, four women testified that Kelly sexually assaulted them when they were teenagers. A fifth alleged victim was expected to testify but did not. The feds did not sayThewhy. case centered around one woman, testifying under the pseudonym Jane, who said Kelly first had sex with her when she was 15 years old and continued to assault her hundreds of times over multiple years before she turned 18.Jane, now 37, said Kelly sometimes took videos, and said she was the 14-year-old girl in a child sex tape that was at the center of Kelly’s 2008 child pornography trial in Illinois.
CRITICS have said the opening episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are “dazzling” butThe“slow”.Amazon series is set thousands of years before JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books and Peter Jackson’s movies. Set in the second age of Middleearth, it follows an ensemble cast of characters as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil. The Guardian said it was “astounding” TV and would be fit for the Developedcinema.by showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay, the fantasy series, which is released on Prime Video on Friday, begins during a time of relative peace and concisely brings together all the major events of Middle-earth’s SecondTheseAge.include the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron and the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, as well as the last alliance between Elves and Men. “This is TV that is made for big screens, although surely destined to be watched on smaller ones,” wrote Rebecca Nicholson in her four-star review for The Guardian. “It is so cinematic and grand that it makes [Game of Thrones prequel] House of the Dragon look as if it has been cobbled together on Minecraft.” “Now, I just need to find someone with a huge telly to let me watch with them,” she added. Nicholson, who said she was willing to disregard some of the “smell-the-fart” acting and the attimes “all-or-nothing” pace of the show, was particularly enamoured with Morfydd Clark’s performance as the fighter Galadriel. “She is valiant, flawed and haughty, as bloody-minded as she is brilliant, scarred by the horrors of war,” she said. “If that doesn’t sound like much fun, wait till you see what she does to a snow troll.”. The Independent generally agreed with her assessment, also awarding four-stars for “a spectacularly cinematic return to Middle-earth”.TheRingsof Power is thought to be the most expensive TV show ever made, having cost a whopping $1bn (£800m) - and Amazon boss Jeff Bezos made a surprise appearance at its world premiere in London on “AmazonTuesday.were right to trust their dump truck full of cash to relatively unproven first-time showrunners,” opined Kevin E G Perry. But he warned that “fans of hobbits should note that the show takes place so far before The Hobbit that hobbits aren’t even hobbits“Insteadyet”.they’re a tight knit group of ‘harfoots’, an evolutionary predecessor to the creatures we know and love,” he explained. “It’s the harfoots that really make The Rings of Power work.” He saved special praise for Megan Richards and Markella Kavenagh, giving “stand-out performances” as the young harfoots, adding: “Maybe it’s just the reassuring presence of British comedy icon Lenny Henry among the cast (playing elder harfoot Sadoc Burrows), but these pastoral scenes manage to capture the magic of the late-Eighties BBC version of The Chronicles of Narnia, an enchanting series which never had quite this budget.” Empire described the series as “lavish and sweeping”, and one that “puts its money where its mouth is.”
“For all its diversions, [Jackson’s] The Lord of the Rings had a single, simple plot: get the ring in the fire!”, wrote Ed Cumming. “There’s less of that here.“The scene-setting keeps being interrupted by action sequences, like a pointless elf versus dwarf stone-breaking exercise. That’s one of the problems with immortality: there’s no sense of urgency.” However, The Daily Mail gave the series one star, describing it as “so staggeringly bad, it’s hilarious”.“Everything about it is illjudged to a spectacular extreme,” wrote Christopher Stevens. “The cliche-laden script, the dire acting, the leaden pace, the sheer inconsistency and confusion as it lurches between styles - where do we start?” (BBC)

“Midnights” will be Taylor Swift’s first new album since her surprise duo, “Folklore” and “evermore,” dropped five months apart in 2020.
Sigourney Weaver won’t retire from acting: ‘I enjoy it more now than ever’
Sigourney Weaver is 72 years old.
A graduate of Yale School of Drama, where she was classmates with Meryl Streep, Weaver made her stage debut in 1973 and was first seen on the screen in 1970, with a role on the series “Somerset.” She made her big screen debut as one of the women dating Woody Allen’s Alvy in the now-controversial writerdirector’s seminal romantic comedy, “Annie Hall” in 1977. Weaver last year talked to the Daily News about revisiting a “disappearing” version of the Big Apple in the film adaptation of “My Salinger Year,” in which she played a fictional incarnation of J.D. Salinger’s literary agent. Filming the movie “was just one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had,” Weaver said at the time. (NYDailynews)
TAYLOR Swift is ready to begin again. The 32-year-old singer, who has spent most of the past several years re-recording her old albums amid a rights feud with former manager Scooter Braun, announced Sunday night that she is finally back with fresh content. “I had sort of made up my mind that, if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand-new album comes out Oct. 21,” Swift said to raucous applause while accepting the award for video of the year at the VMAs for her 10-minute music video for “All Too Well.” The “Paper Rings” singer followed up the surprise news with a few more details online at the stroke of midnight, announcing that the album, called “Midnights,” will be “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life.”“We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our selfmade cages and pray that we aren’t — right this minute — about to make some fateful life-altering mistake,” she wrote. “This is a collection of music
SIGOURNEY Weaver’s still a working girl — and plans on keeping it that way.
Taylor Swift announces new album, ‘Midnights,’ to be released in October written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching — hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.”“Midnights” will be Swift’s first new album since her surprise duo, “Folklore” and “evermore,” dropped five months apart in 2020. (NYDailynews)
That, said Weaver, is “the most exhilarating thing in the world.”

“I’m fine that I might be the oldest person on the set,” continued Weaver. While she often adjusts to “a period of “Oh my god, it’s happening again,” the three-time Oscar nom said that feeling doesn’t hold a candle to “the joy and the explosion of letting this person out to live.”
The “Alien” and “Working Girl” star, 72, shared in a new interview with Interview Magazine that she intends to keep the grind going, age be Askeddamned.by Elizabeth Banks whether she has any plans to retire in the near future — despite having five projects in the pipeline — the native New Yorker said: “I would hope not, because I probably enjoy it more now than ever.”

Study reveals how drinking two or more cups of black tea a day could affect your longevity in-depth genetic and health information, between 2006 and 2010. The database included information participants reported about their own tea drinking habits, such as frequency and what they added to their cup, according to the study. Some participants didn’t drink black tea at all, but since the data came from the United Kingdom, there also were plenty of people who drank it regularly -- and some who drank up to 10 cups a day, said lead study author Maki Inoue-Choi, an epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute in theTheUS. Biobank followed up about 10 years after the original survey, and researchers found that people who drank two or more cups of tea daily in the interim were less likely to have died from causes such as cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease and stroke, according to the study. The research is an exciting look into tea drinking habits, but there is still more work that needs to be done before recommending dietary changes, said Howard Sesso, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Sesso was not involved in the study.
“The authors tried to control for other dietary factors, but tea drinkers typically differ from non-tea drinkers in other ways that would likely weaken these findings. We really need more randomised clinical trials testing tea intake,” Sesso said in an email. For many tea drinkers, the process of making their tea is crucial. What temperature does the water need to be? Do you take it black? Do you add milk? Sugar? How much? If you can’t imagine taking your tea black, don’t worry just yet. There was no significant reduction in health benefits for those who CONTINUED

timescales longer than about 1,000 years because the global “conveyor belt” of ocean circulation turns over on that timescale. Oxygen isotopes in that water reflect ocean surface temperature, and by extension global climate, because water with the heavier isotope oxygen-18 is a bit harder to evaporate than water with oxygen-16; when the sea is warmer and there’s more evaporation, oxygen-18 builds up in the Thisoceans.isotope buildup is calibrated to temperature, but that calibration requires knowing ocean salinity and how much water is locked up in ice caps.
“The global [oxygen isotope] curve… has always had this semihidden uncertainty due to the dual influences of temperature and ice volume that we can now resolve using clumped isotopes,” said Sierra Petersen of the University of Michigan, who was not involved in Meckler’s study.
SIGNS OF WEIRD OCEAN CIRCULATION Meckler’s team also uncovered large, multi-million-year swings in ocean-bottom temperature. They found surprisingly cool temperatures 55 million years ago, sandwiched between super-warm temperatures 57 and 52 million years ago. Meckler told Ars she was “very puzzled” by such large temperature swings, with cool temperatures showing up shortly after a well-known global warming event called the “Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum” or “PETM.”
Enlarge / Isotopes in sediment cores like these can provide indications of past temperatures.
Benthic foram oxygen isotopes have been a mainstay of ancient global climate studies, with the latest most detailed record extending back 60 million years. Deep ocean temperatures reflect ocean surface temperatures over added milk or sugar, according to the Thatstudy.doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the healthiest way to drink tea, though. Inoue-Choi said health experts strongly encourage limiting sugar and the saturated fats like those in milk.Should you change your drinkingAlthoughhabits?it’s hard to say for sure from the research so far, Inoue-Choi said there are some good reasons why black tea might be so beneficial. “There are multiple possible mechanisms,” she said. “Tea is rich in bioactive compounds ... They have the potential to decrease oxidated stress and inflammation. That could protect against health conditions such as cancer and heartTheredisease.”has been plenty of research on the health benefits of green Observationaltea. studies, like one from 2013, suggest that it could slow the growth of precancerous legions, while a 2014 study found that green tea consumption is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline. Both black and green tea come from variations of the same plant, camellia sinensis, but little research before now has looked into the impacts of drinking black tea, Inoue-Choi said.Because of the lack of research, it may not be time to add black tea into your daily routine just yet, she added. “Our findings may provide reassurance to people who already drink tea every day, but we don’t recommend making decisions about whether people start drinking tea or change how much they are drinking right now,” Inoue-Choi said. People shouldn’t rely on the results from a single study for these kinds of changes, she said, and more research is needed to round out the findings.
The clumped isotope method removes the need to make that assumption about how much water is locked away in ice because it simultaneously measures the levels of carbon-13 found in the same sample of calcium carbonate in a foram shell. Thermodynamics favors “clumping” of heavier isotopes in calcium carbonate in cold water, but as the water gets warmer, entropy increasingly exerts its influence, and the heavier isotopes become more scattered in the shell material.
A HOTTER GREENHOUSE? Comparing these new temperatures to the CO2 levels prevalent at the time produced a bit of a surprise. “Perhaps most striking is the evidence this study provides for tight coupling between geologically brief periods of high CO2 and deep ocean temperature,” said John Eiler of Caltech, who pioneered the use of clumped isotopes to measure ancient temperatures but was not part of Meckler’s study.
warmer temperatures suggest that CO2’s capacity to warm during that time in Earth’s past was higher than was found in earlier studies. “This would lead to a higher climate sensitivity to atmospheric CO2,” the paper says. Alternatively, reconstructions of atmospheric CO2 levels at the time may underestimate those past gas concentrations. “There’s quite a lot of uncertainty still in the CO2 reconstructions,” Meckler said. She also noted that the researchers don’t yet have global coverage with their data. “I do want to want to put a caveat here that we have only looked at the Atlantic Ocean so far, so it could be that the Atlantic Ocean is doing something special,” Meckler told Ars. “This increased sensitivity to CO2 would only be the case if this was really a global signal—we don’t know that yet.”

The degree of isotope clumping is calibrated to temperature in the lab for a variety of materials, enabling clumped isotope measurements to yield temperature measurements in deep time. The new method indicates that between 57 and 52 million years ago, the North Atlantic abyss was about 20°C. That’s a big difference from the oxygen isotope data, which yielded temperatures of 12–14°C. “That’s a whole lot warmer,” said Meckler. For comparison, today’s equivalent is around 1–2°C.
A NEWER, THERMOMETERCLEARER
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s best estimate is that doubling our CO2 from preindustrial levels will result in 3°C of global warming, but the uncertainty remains large—it could be between 2.5°C and 4°C for that same increase in CO2. If the value is closer to 4ºC, Earth will warm more for the same amount of CO2 in the Meckler’sair.
In a paper recently published in Science, Professor Nele Meckler of the University of Bergen and colleagues argue that the climate between around 35 and 60 million years ago may have been considerably warmer than we thought. Their finding suggests that a given level of CO2 might produce more warming than prior work indicated, and it hints that the ocean circulated differently during that warm, ice-free climate. Their conclusions come from new measurements of carbon and oxygen isotopes found in the shells of tiny creatures, called benthic foraminifera or “forams,” that lived on the seafloor at the time. Earlier work with similar samples had estimated temperatures using oxygen isotopes—a technique that could be confused by changes in how much water was locked away in ice at the poles and, to a lesser extent, variations in ocean salinity. The new study used a technique that registers temperatures more reliably and produced much warmer numbers.

Pfizer’s updated vaccine is a 30-microgram dose authorized for people age 12 and older. Moderna’s updated vaccine is a 50-microgram dose authorized for people age 18 andTheolder.shots can be administered after they’re recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC’s vaccine advisory group is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to support recommending the boosters for use. Then, the CDC director must sign off on the recommendation. An OK from the CDC would mean updated boosters could be administered within days -- both to older people who may have received a booster just a few months ago and younger people who haven’t been eligible for an additional booster during the latest wave of cases.
Both are now bivalent vaccines that combine the companies’ original vaccine with one that targets the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sublineages.

monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are not authorized as booster doses for individuals 12 years of age and older,” the FDA said.Individuals ages 12 and up are eligible for the Pfizer bivalent booster if they have received their primary series and it has been at least two months since their last vaccine dose. Individuals ages 18 and up are eligible for Moderna boosters on the same schedule. People too young to receive an updated booster can still be boosted with the earlier vaccine. The FDA said it will “work quickly” to evaluate future submissions for authorization of bivalent boosters for younger people. Pfizer said in a news release it expects to submit an application for authorization of its updated booster for children ages 5 through 11 in early October, and it’s working to prepare an application for children ages 6 months through 4 years.“We want to make sure that adults and the adolescents covered by this authorization are able to get the most up-to-date version of a booster vaccine, and that’s why we are no longer authorizing the monovalent -- the original -- booster for administration as a booster dose to those populations,” Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said during a news briefing. About two-thirds of the total US population is vaccinated against Covid-19 with an initial series, according to data from the CDC. But less than half of those with their initial series -- and less than a third of the total population -- has also gotten a booster. There’s no plan yet to phase out the earlier vaccines used in the primary series, Marks said, but this is a “transitional year,” when people need to make sure they have a “good base upon which we build ... which will help protect us against the unknown.” “If you’ve not yet received a booster dose, or it’s been several months since your last booster dose, now’s the time to consider getting one,” Marks said.
The US Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday authorized updated Covid-19 vaccine booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer. This is the first time updated Covid-19 vaccines have received emergency use authorization in the United States. Both are bivalent vaccines that combine the companies’ original vaccine with one that targets the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sublineages.
FDA authorises Pfizer and Moderna’s updated Covid-19 boosters
On Wednesday, FDA officials defended their swift emergency use authorization of the updated Covid vaccine booster. Pfizer and Moderna submitted for authorization last week. “The public can rest assured that a great deal of care has been taken by the FDA to ensure that these updated boosters meet our rigorous safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality standards for emergency use authorization,” Marks said. The agency has authorized these boosters after studies in mice, but ahead of the results of clinical trials in humans. This is similar to the way annual flu vaccines are tested each year, but it’s a first for Covid-19 vaccines. The approach has generated some controversy among vaccine experts. In making the authorization, the agency did not call a new meeting of its independent vaccine advisers, who often weigh in on vaccine changes; the advisory group had offered its insight on updating the original vaccine in meetings over the“Wesummer.have been planning for and gathering input on our approach to updated boosters since earlier this year,” FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said during the news briefing.
The updated vaccines do not replace shots for the primary series, but they do replace the booster people older than 12 receive. “With today’s authorization, the RECORD-BREAKING hot and dry weather this summer has seen more exotic plants including figs and avocadoes growing in the UK, gardeners have told BBC News. It’s part of a trend of Mediterranean and sub-tropical plants thriving in recent years, they say. Some varieties previously thought of as houseplants are now growing successfully outside, while traditional British garden varieties struggle. But scientists warn that lack of water in the future could threaten plants. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) predicts that wetter winters and warmer, drier summers with greater variability in rainfall will produce conditions favourable to some more exotic plants. Our planet has warmed by 1.1C since the industrial revolution about 200 years ago, which scientists link to human-induced climate change. The UK is warming slightly faster than the average pace of global temperature increase, according to the Met Office. Gardens in the north of England
“The FDA has extensive experience with evaluating strain changes for influenza vaccines and is confident in the data supporting these latest booster authorizations.” In addition to the animal data, the FDA said it was basing its decision on more than a year of experience with hundreds of millions of doses of mRNA vaccines given around the globe. They are also relying on human clinical trials of different bivalent vaccines that target the original Omicron strain. That vaccine has been authorized in the UK, but will not be available in the US. More than 1,400 participants were enrolled in clinical trials of the Pfizer and Moderna bivalent vaccines against BA.1. Human studies of the bivalent boosters, which combine the companies’ original vaccine with one that targets the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sublineages, have started, Marks said on Wednesday. Data from those studies is expected in another month or two.

Sub-Tropicana at RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate.
Climate change: Avocados and exotic plants grow in hot UK summer are feeling the effects including Harlow Carr in Harrogate which has had a sub-tropical garden since 2020.The Royal Horticulture Society garden is curated by Russell Watkins who first started working there 17 years ago. Back then, he grew plants standard to the UK - a mix of hardy shrubs and perennials that live for many years. “We have all pushed the boundaries of what we can grow”, he says, pointing to the huge tropical-looking foliage of the rice paper plant, saying “a few years ago it wouldn’t have survived”. Hardy bananas, various dahlias, and some species of ginger are increasingly surviving winters, he says, and “thriving in the long spells of sunny weather that we have had this year.” Higher temperatures are being felt further north than they used to be as a result of human-induced climate change, according to Dr Mark McCarthy, head of the Met Office National Climate Information Centre.
How good were Verstappen and Red Bull at Spa. A little vignette in the last part of the race proved it. He set fastest lap - on medium tyres, on his first lap of his final stint, still with 13 laps of fuel left in the car.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc made a late pit stop to try to grab it back, in a vain attempt to limit the championship damage. It went wrong, as so many things have for Ferrari this year. Leclerc broke the pit-lane speed limit because Ferrari’s back-up system after an early failure was wrongly calibrated. He was passed for fifth place by Fernando Alonso’s Alpine as he rejoined the track. And could not get within 0.6secs of Verstappen’s time, despite an empty tank, soft tyres, and the aid of the DRS overtaking aid and a tow as he repassed Alonso. To add insult to injury, Leclerc was penalised five seconds for the pit transgression, which demoted him back behind Alonso, and the loss of two further points. (BBC)

Belgian Grand Prix: No have ever won a race starting from 14th on the grid.” In 2013, it is worth reminding oneself, Vettel won the final nine races in a row. Verstappen is already on a run of three, and he heads into his home race in Zandvoort this coming weekend, a race he utterly dominated last year in his close championship battle with Lewis Hamilton.

‘THE CAR HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE’ Verstappen acknowledged that this was, in terms of an entire grand prix weekend, the most dominant performance of his career. Not even a penalty for using too many engine parts, that led him to start the race in 14th on the grid, delayed him too much at Spa. By lap 12, he was in the lead for the first time after Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz made his first pit stop from the lead; seven laps later, after his own first pit stop, Verstappen had it for real. And that was the last time anyone saw him. “The car has been incredible from first practice,” Verstappen said. “We didn’t expect it to be like this but it is nice when things positively surprise you and it has been really enjoyable to drive it around here. “We had difficulties starting 14th which wasn’t easy, it was very hectic in front of me but once everything calmed down literally overtaking one car every lap and when I saw the softs were holding on I knew there was a good possibility we could win the race.” Horner said that “to be fighting for the lead by lap 18 was beyond any of our predictions; when you look at pre-race plots, it looked like by the last pit stop we could be somewhere around the podium.” Others had already seen the writing on the wall. Mercedes’ George Russell said after qualifying he expected Verstappen to win. And up and down the paddock on Sunday many more agreed.

THERE is just no stopping Max Verstappen right now - not on his way to a stunning victory in the Belgian Grand Prix, and not as he heads inexorably towards a second consecutive world championship. The Red Bull driver’s first title may have been won in dramatic and controversial circumstances in Abu Dhabi last year, but the only remaining question marks over his second are when he will clinch it. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said after Sunday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps that it would be by the time Formula 1 leaves Europe.Asthat is in two races’ time and there will still be six races to go at that point, that is highly unlikely. But shortly after that, in either Singapore or Japan, now looks distinctly possible. When it comes, he will deserve it. His driving this season has been peerless, and in Spa that was more the case than ever. On pole by more than 0.6 seconds; consistently quicker than anyone else in the race by at least a second. He was, as his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez put it, “on another level”. The Red Bull team principal Christian Horner described it as “a phenomenal performance”. “Max was quite simply in a league of his own,” Horner said. “And not just today; all weekend. He has excelled here in the past and today he has basically smashed it out of the park.” Horner added: “Max, since winning that championship last year, has taken another step. It’s in many ways released him, and he’s driving at an incredible level. “A driver that is completely at one with the car and is in an absolute purple patch of his career.”

It was Verstappen’s ninth win in 14 races, and right now it is difficult to see how anyone else will win another race this season. They probably will, of course.
