Think Big, Act Small

hen the email came in listing the 25 national winners of the K880 Emerging City Champions program, with two hailing from Charlotte, I double-checked to see if it met one important criteria — was there anything about a Charlotte woman in the email? (You’d be surprised how often I receive story ideas that don’t have anything to do with Charlotte or women.) I saw the name Varian Shrum, and casually added the email to my “check this story out” list. In the beginning, I thought it would be a little blurb. Maybe a one-page Q&A with Shrum about her experience traveling to Toronto to work with the 8-80 Cities network to explore a civic project of her creation. But when I looked into the details of her project — to create an outdoor, inclusive living space in South End that would unite Charlotteans — the idea took root in my brain. Before I knew it, my one-page story was a multi-page profile story on Shrum and her project. That’s when you know you’ve stumbled upon a good story. When it writes itself. Shrum hopes to engage the community with the creation of a temporary neighborhood living room on an under-utilized lot in the heart of South End. She is currently searching for the perfect spot, and has her eye on the back parking lot of Dilworth Artisan Station on Kingston Avenue. Shrum’s idea is in the beginning stages. Typically, I like to wait until a venture or plan is a reality before I

feature it in the magazine. But something about Shrum’s proposal grabbed me and wouldn’t let go. Maybe it was the artsy excitement of South End itself, which matches this issue’s theme. I have never lived downtown, but I am Charlotte born and raised. I have to admit the South End revitalization of the 1990s took me by surprise. The South End of my childhood consisted of the Pepsi bottling plant and the Scaleybark library branch. Mr. K’s Soft Ice Cream, located in a building that originates to the year I was born. And, of course, AMF Centennial Lanes, the bowling alley where we spent chunks of every summer. I remember a few bland strip malls, and sprawling blocks of land. About the time of the South End transformation, I was busy raising a family, and I wasn’t paying attention to the area’s transformation. Historic South End became a thing long before I sat up and took notice. Now, it is a thriving part of our city, and if Shrum is successful in her crowdfunding campaign, it could continue to thrive beyond our city’s collective imagination. Shrum says the K880 Emerging City Champions program taught her to think big, and act small. “You don’t have to be an expert to shape your community, but resources and supporters will fall into place if you have the passion to spark public conversations,” she says. Here’s hoping Shrum’s story sparks a conversation for you. It certainly did for me.

Kathi Alexander Finds Success With SUGAR. Handmade Gourmet Donuts

ometimes you feel like a nut. Donut, that is. At least, that’s the response Kathi Alexander has experienced since introducing the craft donut to Charlotte in September 2014 by opening SUGAR. Handmade Gourmet Donuts. Alexander launched SUGAR as a food truck operation, and business has been so good that late this summer she and business partner Cassmer Ward are expanding into a bricks-and-mortar store in Ballantyne, while also keeping the truck on the street. “I think Charlotte was clearly ready

for a gourmet donut food truck!” Alexander says. She says the reason behind SUGAR’s success is simple, really. “SUGAR. Handmade Gourmet Donuts are unique because they are made the old-fashioned way, but finished with a modern, gourmet flair,” Alexander says. “We use only real ingredients — no mixes, nothing synthetic — and we make everything from scratch … all of our jelly fillings, cream fillings, frostings, icings, everything!” She adds, “Donuts over the last few decades have become massproduced synthetic rings made with

very inexpensive ingredients. I think most people, once they taste a genuine hand-crafted donut, appreciate the vast flavor difference.” At SUGAR, all items are made by Johnson & Wales University pastry chefs and pastry students. The company’s senior pastry chef, Jasmine Macon, oversees the creation of the craft, making sure all products are made, as Alexander puts it,“the SUGAR way.” Alexander leaves the baking to the professionals, instead taking the lead in defining the business, constantly refining the company’s concept and menu specifications. She notes that SUGAR specializes in

yeast donuts, although there are a few cake versions on the menu. “Yeast donuts are a much more timeconsuming process to make,” she says, “because after the dough is made it requires two separate rising times, then must be rolled out and hand-cut — each donut, one by one! We make the dough itself in the kitchen, then load it into the ‘proofer,’ which is a refrigerator-like unit that warms the dough to accelerate its rising process. Once we get to the venue, we begin to fry, then finish the donuts, so every donut we serve was fried just minutes ago.” The company updates its selections constantly, offering at least one new item on the menu each week, often with a seasonal fruit or theme. Customer favorite flavors include strawberries and cream and the traditional vanilla-bean glazed. For the more adventuresome, the maple bacon donut is made with real maple syrup glaze and topped with a chunk of hickorysmoked bacon. Alexander expects to add many more flavors to the menu once the retail shop is up and running. At the store, SUGAR will operate as both a take-out and sit-down shop. The food truck will stay in operation for private corporate events, weddings, bridal brunches and Food Truck Fridays. Alexander notes that craft is where it’s at when it comes to food these days. “Across the country, donuts are another example of an iconic American food that

ocal author Resa Goldberg has more than 20 years of experience as a journalist for radio, print and television, and a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Georgia. Her first book, the memoir Love Me Madly, was published in July by Moonshine Cove Publishers. Love Me Madly offers a candid look at how a twoyear trauma Goldberg experienced as a teenager shaped her way of relating to men, and reveals her painful process toward a better way of life — and love. The book covers her failed marriage, debilitating migraines and dating disasters, as well as her healing process along the way. Both poignant and humorous, Goldberg’s book reveals how she relied on faith, close relationships with her children, her writing, and intense therapy to become the healthy, confident woman she is today. Below, Goldberg talks about her book, and her decision to partner with Safe Alliance in the hopes of helping others who have experienced sexual assault, teen pregnancy and domestic violence. Q: How long have you been working on your memoir? A: I have been working on my book for about three years. That includes writing it, working with a professional book editor to help me with the framework

and to polish it, searching for agents and publishers, and finally going through the actual process of transforming the manuscript on my computer into a real book that will be for sale on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.

Q: What was the most challenging part? A: When I first began, I had never written anything longer than a 5,000-word magazine article. Creating a 60,000 word, book-length piece of work was extremely daunting, but I pushed through and just kept writing. Q: As a past victim of mental and physical abuse, was writing this book a healing process for you? A: Yes. The genesis of the book was actually the three chapters that describe in detail the two-year trauma that I endured as a teenager. I had never sought therapy until after my divorce, and as I got into it, my therapist suggested I write about what happened to me. When I reread it, I almost felt like I was seeing the truth for the first time. Writing about it was very painful at first, but ultimately very cathartic.

Q: Was it difficult to reveal your most private moments? A: Until this year, there were not very many people who knew what I suffered between the ages of 15 and 17. In my entire life, I probably only shared those ugly facts with a few people who were close to me. I never would have spoken publicly about it — and certainly never imagined I would write a book for all the world to read — but my divorce seven years ago prompted me to seek intense therapy for the first time, participate in Al-Anon and really work to heal. For a while, it was two steps forward, three steps back, and I made a lot of mistakes, in my marriage and in dating after divorce. I was desperate to find someone to make the pain go away. Since then, I have learned to focus on myself — to be better, do better, smile more often, laugh a lot and live according to the will of my Higher Power. I think that includes finally sharing my story.

Q: What is your ultimate hope for your book? A: If even one person is moved by my story to get out of a violent relationship, seek help and discover some inspiration to find love within herself, I will feel like I have truly accomplished something meaningful.

Scott says, “Is South End the next arts district of Charlotte? My production partners and I all certainly think so!” Donna Scott Productions was the impetus behind two successful pop-up theatrical events in early 2015, both in non-traditional theater spaces, and the latest event is by far the most grand. Partnerships with Historic South End and the Charlotte Art League, plus a grant from the Arts & Science Council, helped make it all possible. “In the arts community, we often give lip service to crossing our audiences. You seek partnerships where you can move the needle for each other and provide more audience for both — but it’s easier said than done. In working in South End with the Charlotte Art League, we think we’ve found something special,” Scott says. “We’re thrilled to be offering

Varian Shrum Works To Create An Outdoor Living Room For All and offered winners the opportunity to work with experts from across North America, including Gil Penalosa, of 8-80 Cities; Jason Roberts, of Better Block; artist Hunter Franks; and urbanist Kristen Jeffers. Shrum was intrigued by the grant. It seemed like the perfect fit for her idea of creating a “neighborhood living room” — a place that would unite Charlotteans and beautify the city, making an underused section of the city vibrant and viable. “When I researched the program, everything about the mission and approach of 8-80 Cities resonated with me, and I really wanted to be part of it,” Shrum says. “The chance to be mentored by experts, supported

by a network of peers, and funded to improve my neighborhood seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” She created a proposal for the competition, and in late May, Shrum was selected out of 150 applicants as one of 25 winners. Applicants were chosen from eight cities where Knight Foundation invests: Akron, Ohio; Charlotte; Detroit; Macon, Ga.; Miami; Philadelphia; San Jose, Calif.; and St. Paul, Minn. The application asked for projects that offered civic change by addressing mobility, public space or civic engagement. Shrum’s project incorporated all three elements. “I wanted to stand out by incorporating all three elements in my project, so I made the case that existing walking/biking infrastructure like the adjacent Charlotte Rail Trail would see an increase in users if there was a public space destination to anchor their trip,” she says. “Beyond checking off the requirements, I think my passion came across in my application. I really believe in this project!” Winners traveled to Toronto June 12 through 17 to participate in a fourday workshop at the Emerging City Champions Studio. There, activities and presentations were tailored to help participants brainstorm the actions needed to make their concept a reality — from telling their story, to building partnerships, to leveraging funds and project evaluation. arian Shrum is passionate about making connections. A Washington, D.C., native who migrated south to attend Wake Forest University, Shrum is now a planning and neighborhood development consultant in the Queen City. Long fascinated by the connection between the “built environment” and people, she soon fell in love with South End’s emerging arts environment, edgy design and food scene, and intriguing mixture of people. Shrum became particularly enamored with one specific spot in South End — an ugly vacant lot that each Friday is transformed into a food truck mecca that unites people of all backgrounds and interests. This transformation captured Shrum’s imagination, and an idea took root. Why not create a space where civic life flourishes every day … a place that is inclusive, relaxing and, best of all, free? About this time, a coworker introduced Shrum to a grant known as the K880 Emerging City Champions fellowship program, presented by 8-80 Cities and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. 8-80 Cities is a Canadian-based nonprofit that works internationally to help communities reach their ultimate potential by offering ways to encourage people to unite and live healthily. The grant application asked for projects that made cities more “livable,”

Champions were encouraged to begin implementing their community projects over the course of one year, with mentorship and other support from the 8-80 Cities network. “Each of the K880 Emerging City Champions that were selected demonstrated a high level of creativity, passion and a proven track record of community leadership,” says Emily Munroe, executive director of 8-80 Cities.“They all have the potential to make significant and powerful contributions to their cities with the help of the fellowship program.” Shrum will receive $5,000 in funding to help her idea become a reality, along with plenty of support and training from professional mentors. She says, “We were challenged to think big and act small.‘Think big’ by understanding the important role livable cities will play in our lives over the next 50 years. ‘Act small’ by realizing that it starts with you, right where you are, with the skills you

currently have.” She adds, “You don’t have to be an expert to shape your community, but resources and supporters will fall into place if you have the passion to spark public conversations.” Unfortunately, the food truck lot is no longer an option for Shrum’s proposal, for reasons that she can’t elaborate. She is currently searching for the perfect spot, and has her eye on the back parking lot of Dilworth Artisan Station on Kingston Avenue. No matter where she makes her “living room” home, she hopes to engage the community and create camaraderie. Shrum hopes to address her neighborhood’s lack of quality public space by seeding a crowdfunding campaign to bring temporary improvements such as flexible seating, bike racks, and Wi-Fi to an empty lot in the heart of South End, which is accessible to historic neighborhoods such as Wilmore and Dilworth, including the 6,000-plus new residents who live along the light rail.

While in Toronto, Shrum’s mentors challenged her to consider broader themes, events and conversations going on in Charlotte, asking her to consider why South End is lacking public space. She found the answer has much to do with the way the building code is written, and she notes that rewriting the code can take several years, while development is happening now. “There is a lot of talk about Charlotte’s ‘sterilizing development,’ and many community groups are organizing to resist the negative implications of this trend,” Shrum says. “Rather than reacting in anger to developments we don’t want to see, I hope to shift the momentum to proactively showing examples of things we do want to see. In this spirit, I want to lift up my community project as an example of something positive to strive for in Charlotte.”

So what happens when two very different designers team up to decorate the Bailey Springs model home in Davidson? A colorful, whimsical explosion, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what.

The collaborative force behind the design company known as 431 Designs sprang from a friendship. Robusto and Kelly met several years ago when they were both building new homes, and as their friendship grew, they began to lean on each other for feedback on their design selections, which forced them both to think outside of their own box. Robusto was offered a design job by Chesmar Homes, but the deadline was too tight for her to finish the project alone. She asked Kelly to pair up, and 431 Designs was born. “When I asked Jacy to collaborate on this project, she knew it was a fun

opportunity, and the result was a great mix of our styles with awesome overall flow,” Robusto says.“The name 431 was a clever mix of our ages at the time — 43 and 31 — which really sums us up as a team, as a clever mix of our styles and personalities. We take the best of both worlds and combine them.” Robusto is happy with the team’s end result in Bailey Springs. “This latest house, also a Chesmar home, is a really cool mix of weathered wood, glam pieces, bold art and color,” she says. “It’s really fun working with your best friend, but it can also be a challenge at times. While we grow and learn from each

other constantly, we don’t always see eye to eye. We have great respect for each other, which helps us compromise and figure it out with flair, and in most cases the resulting compromise is better than either separate option would ever have been!” Below, Robusto answers a few design questions about her latest project. Q: Tell me about your philosophy toward color ... how does it define the home? A: The use of color is really client specific. But the use of color, and which color, trends just like everything else in

home and fashion. Using all neutral and tone-on-tone is classic, but going bold with color is really hot right now. Q: What colors are trending? A: All hues of blue continue to be hot, but the trend is mixing in other bold pops of color. It’s also popular to mix different hues of the same color — you get almost the same neutral effect but with much more character. Mustards, oranges and bright greens and pinks are hot and all look great with blues. But we are also seeing a lot of the pastel palette of the ’80s in the corals and sea foams and purples (and some shocks of neon), but updated on a backdrop of gray. Gray continues to be the hottest neutral and is a perfect combination with most other colors. I think we’ll start seeing warmer muddy colors again soon, like olive, rust and aubergine, but still with a splash of bright color. Q: Blue plays a role throughout the home, and yet you have many pops of contrasting colors. A: Blue in almost any hue is hot. It’s probably the easiest color to incorporate

into any design because it can be really neutral in the lighter tones or add the pop to a room in the aqua and turquoise hues. Navy can be scary to a lot of people because it’s so dark. But we wanted to show how this dark hue of blue could be used to actually add the unexpected “pop.” We painted the entire fireplace — mantel, surround, trim and walls — navy. And we loved how well fuchsia plays off of it in a glamorous way. It also looks awesome with other shades of blue and metallic; it’s like a good neutral base with tons of personality! Q: This home features lots of whimsical, bold-colored accessories. How do homeowners make bold décor work for them? A: Again, the use of color is very client specific. But for those less daring, you can always “ease” into color by going bold in one room rather than the entire house. Or, add more subtle pops of color to existing neutral rooms. We wanted to show how fun and versatile color can be with this home, but also how it can be used in art and accessories that can easily be changed when trends change. We stayed neutral with the larger pieces of furniture, such as the sofas, chairs, tables, etc., and added in pops of color. A fuchsia sofa would be amazing, but it’s a lot easier (and less expensive) to change toss pillows on that sofa than to buy a new sofa or reupholster it when you grow tired of pink!

hey say the eyes are the windows to a person’s soul. Every expression, every emotion … the eyes simply don’t lie. It’s no wonder women work tirelessly to keep this area as youthful as possible. Unfortunately, the eye area is especially susceptible to aging due to the area’s delicate, thin skin. Other factors, such as age, genetics and sun damage, also can wreak havoc on this area. Dr. Stephen Giordano, with Carolina Age Management Institute in Huntersville, is an expert in anti-aging and internal medicine. Dr. Giordano strives to help women protect their skin by tailoring his regimen for each individual patient. He offers tips to women on protecting this area. For instance, Botox can help protect the delicate eye skin. “By significantly decreasing the daily wear and tear a woman places on her delicate eye area, we can reduce the aging affect around the eyes dramatically,” Dr. Giordano says. “Starting with Botox is probably the first treatment most people try, and it works extremely well. It is safe and affordable, and time-tested to be extremely effective.” But that’s just the beginning. At CAMI, Dr. Giordano offers multiple treatments to help women find that youthful feeling. “The most common is to use a combined approach of different modalities to make the skin look the best it can,” he says. “Some of those modalities include Botox or similar product, dermal fillers such as Juvéderm, and then for the more aggressive modalities, we can do laser resurfacing and tightening as well as THERMiTight Skin Tightening.”

Resurfacing and lasers can dramatically eliminate wrinkles, but patients need to choose clinical providers carefully.“Not all lasers are equal and not all clinical providers using the laser are equal,” Dr. Giordano cautions. “There’s a very broad spectrum of laser treatments available, from very superficial treatments to very deep treatments. In order to get effective wrinkle removal or reduction, you need to have a fairly high skill-set to be able to do deep resurfacing.” Deep resurfacing is one of the most effective tools in Dr. Giordano’s anti-aging toolbox. “This literally vaporizes the wrinkle right off the skin, allowing new skin to populate,” he says. “The downtime can vary from three to four days, to as much as 10 to 14 days, depending on how much younger a person wishes to look. I generally say, if you give me 10 to 14 days, I’ll give your face back 10 years.” The cost varies depending on how aggressive the treatment, ranging from $500 to as much as $3500. “All in all,” Dr. Giordano says, “given the fact that no scalpel is required, and you basically get the results of the surgical facelift, it’s still a pretty good deal.”

More Than A Number Carmel OB/GYN Offers Personalized Care

ovant Health Carmel OB/GYN, south Charlotte’s premier OB/GYN practice, offers truly personalized obstetric and gynecological care, treating patients as people rather than numbers on a chart. The practice’s state-of-the-art technology and training also allows for some gynecological procedures such as uterine ablations and permanent birth control procedures to be performed in their Blakeney office instead of the hospital. Practice manager Erin Kelchner says the practice’s 10 providers — nine doctors and one nurse practitioner — have designed the office to offer a family atmosphere that is unique to their specialty. Patients can enjoy everything from personalized care, to high-resolution sonography, to coffee service and Wi-Fi in the waiting room. “Patients are real people to our doctors and they treat them that way,” Kelchner says. “In most OB/GYN offices, when a woman is pregnant, she will rotate between all the doctors. We don’t do that. A patient is assigned a physician who will see her through her entire pregnancy.” Though that same doctor may not be available during delivery, Carmel OB/ GYN offers a “Meet and Greet” several times each year. At that time, patients are

invited to bring their spouses or significant others to meet the other doctors, ask questions, and ease any nervousness they may have about who will walk in the room in the middle of the night to deliver their baby. This protocol allows the doctors to offer more personalized care and strengthens the relationship between patient and provider. Babies are delivered at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, which has recently remodeled its labor and delivery rooms and is currently building a new women’s wing, which will have a number of resources for new moms, as well as a separate entrance for labor and delivery to streamline hospital admission. Kelchner says the one-on-one philosophy extends to the support staff. Patients take comfort in knowing the friendly

voice on the other end of the phone is also a mother, someone who has been there and experienced the same sort of issues, and will do her best to solve whatever problem they are calling about. Expectant mothers are usually seen at eight weeks, but Kelchner encourages them to call for an appointment as soon as they suspect they are pregnant. She also advises expectant moms to check out the practice’s website for helpful information to make those first few weeks of pregnancy a little more comfortable. And since providers aren’t bound by quotas at Carmel OB/GYN, they can take their time talking to each patient to ensure they get the very best of care. “You will still fill out forms, but our doctors will ask questions about your health, and if you have a problem or concern, they will investigate it further. To them, it’s about the entire body and what they can do to make you feel better,” Kelchner says. Patient opinions count at Carmel OB/ GYN. Patient feedback is encouraged, and the practice makes changes based on those comments. “I get patient comments emailed to me every week and I disburse them accordingly. Usually they are praises, but if a patient suggests an improvement, we will incorporate that suggestion into our practice,” Kelchner says. [TCW]

Pearl has such a good time, though, that Brownie can’t get her out of the car after they return. It takes some yummy cat treats to get Pearl out of the car, as Pearl loves takeout! Sea Otters by Margo Gates (2014) is part of the Blastoff! Readers Animal Safari series. This book tells the basic facts about sea otters, and it is representative of the other titles in this series about different animals.
