Go For The Holiday Gusto ’m not sure why, but I’ve got a new lease on life when it comes to the holidays this season. As early as November 1, I developed Christmas fever. It’s in full swing now. This year, I am going for the gusto. I want to make ornaments. Glue gun and glitter, anyone? I want to add new cookies and candies to my repertoire, especially anything that mixes peppermint with dark chocolate. I want to hang more lights than ever before — and earlier! I want to have holiday photo cards made of my child, and to create my own gift tags, and to bake little tiny pound cakes for those who have shown me kindness along the way. I want to contribute to the Mitten Tree at my child’s school and give to Second Harvest Food Bank … even if only in tiny increments. I want to visit Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and take a carriage ride with a mug of cocoa in my hands and my 10year-old daughter beside me. I want to look out the window for Rudolph’s redbeacon nose. I want to watch every holiday movie ABC and the Hallmark channel has to offer this season. In other words, I want it all. I’m not sure what is fueling all this holiday energy. I’ve always loved the holidays, but have had to reel myself back in during the last handful of recession-filled years. But this level of excitement — this urgency to make things merry and bright — is at an alltime high for me. Is it the realization that my child is growing up quickly, and I better get it

while the getting’s good? Is it that I’m tired of living like Ebenezer Scrooge? Or is it simply the ill effects of spending too much time on Pinterest? It’s like I’ve hit the holiday lottery, only the money hasn’t shown up in the bank yet. Back to earth for a minute: Yes, I’m still on a budget. I’ve accepted that I will always be on a budget. (Goodbye prerecession spending; we shall never meet again.) But instead of living in holiday lockdown like I have for the last handful of years, I feel like throwing caution to the wind — at least, to a point. If I can’t afford to buy something ornate and exquisitely priced, then maybe, with the help of Pinterest and some artsy friends, I can make it. I can at least say I tried. For me, the holidays are about celebrating the things I believe in, loving others, and spreading good cheer. This year, I think good cheer is needed most of all. And so, I’ve decided to go for the gusto. I’ve decided to take the yuletide by the horns and wrestle all the love and cheer and merriness I can muster out of it. And so, if you get a tiny loaf of pound cake from me, consider it an offering of hope. If you receive an ornate gift made out of toilet paper rolls (you think I’m kidding), consider it a gift from the heart, especially when you notice my glue-gun blisters. Most of all, when you look at my holiday lights, don’t just see a splash of cheerfulness — consider them beacons of hope sparkling in twinkling colors of red, green, blue and gold. Happy holidays!

Meghann Hasty’s Husband — And Redbook Agrees

harlotte-native Meghann Hasty thinks she has a hot husband … and apparently, she’s not the only one. On a whim, Hasty nominated her spouse of 12 years, James, for Redbook’s “Hot Husband” contest, and the financial adviser and father of four made the initial cut out of 1,500 entries. Twenty-five men around the country were named finalists of the contest, which ran from Sept. 11 through Oct. 28. The winner will appear in the February issue of Redbook, and will also earn the grand prize: a five-day, four-night trip to the Hyatt Regency Curacao Golf Resort, Spa and Marina, valued at $5,400. To enter the contest, Meghann had to submit a 500-word essay and three photos of her hottie husband. When James passed the first round and became a possible finalist, she was required to answer nearly three pages of questions, including details about her relationship with James, how she felt when they first met, and a peek at

his parenting skills. Both Meghann and James were born in Charlotte, and reside in Harrisburg. She says people often stop him to say he looks like country music star Blake Shelton. That said, she notes the concept of “hot” goes beyond mere looks. “It’s not just that these men are easy on the eyes, but more the way they are wonderful role models for their children, and love their wives,” Meghann says. “In a day and age when fathers and husbands seem to be lacking respect for women, or nonexistent as fathers, I love the way Redbook honors these men as husbands and fathers. I am really proud of him and all he stands for!” Meredith Rollins, executive editor of Redbook, agrees. “Obviously, all our Hot Husband finalists are great looking,” she

says. “But we fall in love with them because of the stories their wives tell. These guys are amazing husbands and fathers. They help their wives through hard times; they wake up at the crack of dawn to do fun things with their kids. They give emotional support and help around the house, and make a mean cup of coffee — and they have all sorts of romantic tricks up their sleeves. It’s not enough to be a handsome face! Our Hot Husbands have to be the generous, loving, above-and-beyond total package.” Meghann says James does many things that make him worthy of the “hottest husband” honor. “He will bend over backward to fulfill something for me, from giving me a full day away to shop or time to relax with a coffee at Panera, to arranging his day to take care of four small children,” she says. “He’s been known to go to four different Redboxes because I wanted to see a new movie that is all out. And he is really adorable when he spends one-onone time with our 3-year-old daughter, cuddled up next to her, or belting out a Sunday school song together.”

Meghann adds, “He is super hot because he has had to endure four pregnancies of comforting me as I am bawling because I feel so fat and ugly. He needs an award for just enduring all those hormones! He is hot because he knows that every time I go on Pinterest, I concoct a new idea for the house, and he always builds it for me. He is hot because when I am tempted to be all over the place with my emotions, he is strong and steady. We really do work well as a team.” For his part, James thinks his wife is pretty smoking hot, herself. “Of course my wife is hot!” he laughs. “That’s why I married her! In all seriousness, Meghann is my sweetheart. We have four small children who are always pulling for her attention, but in the midst of all the chaos I know that I am first in her heart and she is first in mine. We have date nights; we make each other laugh. I still surprise her with grape Big League Chew — her favorite! It doesn’t have to be a big production. It’s the small things you do that remind your wife that she’s still No. 1 in your heart.”

More Than Coffee Espresso Proprietor Debra DeLano Warms The Heart

estled in the atrium of the Design Center at South End, you’ll find Debra DeLano standing near her shiny Italian espresso machine, ready to make you a hot cup of joe. Her smile is as warm as the coffee she serves. For nine years, the owner of Java Passage Espresso Bar has been winning awards and spreading the love — one cup at a time. “I want you to have a good cup of coffee. I want you to enjoy it and I want you to become family. That’s what coffee has made for me here. Family and community,” she says.

DeLano’s career path — from broadcasting professional to travel agent to espresso bar proprietor — was not an easy one. A survivor of her son’s tragic suicide, DeLano rose from the ashes at the suggestion of her exhusband, Bob, who encouraged her to “get back into life.” “I turned a tragedy into life … in order to live. I couldn’t stay mired in that,” she says. Bob suggested she explore the coffee business, because he and DeLano had discovered flavored coffee through their weight-loss attempts. “The way to cheat on Weight Watchers and get all that flavor was with

flavored coffee,” she says, laughing. “And because of that, we developed a love affair with coffee.” That love is something DeLano tries to share with customers on a daily basis. But for DeLano, it’s not just about coffee. It’s about giving back a measure of happiness to others. “If you walk out of here feeling bad, I’ve failed you,” she says. “Part of my job is bringing people up.” She may own an espresso bar, but DeLano is “not a purist,” she says. “The best cup of coffee is what you like,” she says. “My machine can make the perfect cup of coffee and if you don’t like it, then it’s just not for you.”

Coffee Making The Perfect Cup ebra DeLano, owner of the award-winning Java Passage Espresso Bar, makes a great cup of coffee. Here, she shares a few of her expert tips: Bean there. “You want to grind coffee right before you make it to keep the good stuff in the cup,” DeLano explains. “The minute you grind coffee, it starts changing, and the chemicals escape into the air.” Who brew? “If you think your coffee is too strong, add hot water after you brew it; don’t brew water through it. That’s one of the biggest mistakes people make.” DeLano explains that running water through the same grounds extracts too much from the coffee. “That coffee bean gave so much for you, don’t abuse it,” she laughs. The heat is on. The temperature of the water truly makes a difference. “If you can get a coffee maker that heats the water between 194 to 204 degrees, that’s ideal,” DeLano says. “Honestly, most home coffee machines don’t get hot enough.” [TCW]

South end ... a dynamic choice harlotte’s South End neighborhood is located just south of uptown. Over the past decade, the area has grown into one of Charlotte’s most dynamic places, transitioning from a predominately commercial and industrial area into a creative design district and a vibrant urban residential neighborhood. Beginning in the 1850s and reborn in the 1990s, today’s South End is unique — as a place to live, shop, dine, work, party and chill. There’s really nothing else like it in town. Development is underway in South End. There are currently 11 residential projects either under construction or just opening, which will add 2,400 new homes to South End. Estimates show that by 2015, more than 6,300 residents will live in the area. South End is also Charlotte’s home for small businesses. The district boasts more than 750 businesses, including about 300 retailers. The vast majority of these are small businesses and entrepreneurs. The district has experienced a 50-percent growth in dining and entertainment in the last four years, and many new restaurants and small businesses will open their doors in the next few months. South End has grown into a creative district, with huge growth in furnishings and design businesses in the past few years. The neighborhood has become Charlotte’s center for artists and art galleries. Growing A Garden

All About The Green As director of development for DSBG, Schultz will oversee all membership and

fundraising activities for the Garden. “To me, it’s all about relationship building. That’s what I enjoy about my job — meeting people and finding out what makes them tick. I’m a people person and this fits right in with my personality,” Schultz says. Her positive attitude helps her handle the many “no’s” that are inevitable in her job, which allows her to remain successful in development even through tough economic times. “You either like to ask for money or you don’t,” she says. “When someone says no, I know they are not saying no to me. You can’t take it personally. I look at it as giving folks an opportunity to get involved with a very important cause or organization. It’s giving them a chance to be a partner in something great.”

Carmen Schultz Brings Her Gifts To Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

armen Schultz is a nonprofit’s dream. She’s a singer, an actress, and she can write a pretty mean grant proposal. She doesn’t mind asking for money if it’s for a cause she believes in. She can plan unique events, and is constantly thinking of exciting new fundraising ideas. She’s offering these talents and many more to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, the Gaston County nonprofit known for making the holidays merry and bright.

Mover & Shaker » By Melinda Johnston » Photos By Ben Sherrill Schultz says the nonprofit world hit a rough patch several years ago, but things are on a definite upswing. “The philanthropic climate is actually very positive,” she says.

Early Roots

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | December 2013 24

The Alabama native moved to Gastonia when she was 13. She fell in love with theater in high school and spent one semester at UNC Charlotte majoring in music until, she says, common sense won out. She changed her major, and graduated with a degree in child and family development. After several years in the social work field, she tried her hand at development work and found her niche. “I started writing grants, getting sponsorships and doing event planning, and it all clicked,” Schultz says. She worked in development at the Family Center in Charlotte (now merged with Thompson Child and Family Development), and then the United Way of Gaston County. She joined DSBG in November. “This opportunity was too good to pass up,” she says. “The Garden is a very special place. It’s a beautiful drive to work every day, and it’s a wonderful asset for our region.”

Schultz joined the nonprofit at the perfect time. DSBG has just broken ground on a new, magical space planned for the heart of the 380-acre Garden specifically with children in mind. Lost Hollow: The Kimbrell Children’s Garden is a garden like no other in the United States, and slated to open in October 2014. Part of her task is to help secure the remaining $300,000 for the $4 million project. It’s not an impossible task; a whopping $1.7 million has already been raised. When the fund balance reaches $2 million, Gastonia textile executive Duke Kimbrell and his wife, Dot, will match it. “This is going to be an amazing place for children,” Schultz says. “There will be different destinations throughout the gardens. We were able to get some artifacts from Mr. Stowe’s estate, and they will become part of Lost Hollow.” She adds, “My favorite item is the round aviary. It will be installed on a turntable and surrounded by bushes that attract birds. The children will get in the aviary and be looking out at the birds while slowly spinning around, completely opposite of what you would normally expect.” The Garden is also gearing up for the

2013 holiday season, a regional favorite. The facilities crew started stringing the first of the estimated half-million lights in September, and this season promises to be the most exciting yet. Traditional favorites will return, such as the 16-foot Orchid Tree and, of course, Santa and his workshop. There will be plenty of new attractions, as well. “This year, Holidays at the Garden will feature a 30-foot tree, new train sets, and other surprises I don’t want to give away,” she says. “There will be train and carriage rides, and special activities and classes each day. In addition to the usual hot drinks and snacks, we will feature a cash bar with beer and wine on Fridays, Saturdays and New Year’s Eve.” Schultz adds, “It’s a wonderful way to spend a December evening. I hope folks will add Holidays at the Garden to their to-do list for December. I promise they won’t be disappointed!” [TCW]

n Nov. 5 at Chima Brazilian Steakhouse, Today’s Charlotte Woman and Make-A-Wish® honored the inaugural class of 2013 W.I.S.H. Society honorees, for Women Inspiring Strength & Hope. There, Robin Smith-Salzman was announced as the first Make-A-Wish® Woman of the Year. Smith-Salzman, the owner and marketing director of Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, raised $20,150 for Make-A-Wish®, to be used to fulfill wishes in the Charlotte community for children with life-threatening medical conditions. The mother of three and grandmother of six was born in Pittsburgh but raised in Orlando. She is an active member of the Charlotte philanthropic community, and has led her business’ charitable efforts over the past 10 years to include donations totaling a million dollars. Professional achievements include Business Today’s Top Women Business Leaders Award, Market Manager of the Year Award for CBS Radio, and the Lake Norman Chamber Champions of Diversity Award. On a personal note, Smith-Salzman enjoys reading, cooking and Pilates. Her connection to Make-A-Wish® developed earlier this year, when she and husband Jack funded a wish, and witnessed the power of that wish firsthand. When presented with the award, Smith-Salzman said, “Woman of the Year … that’s a stretch! But I really appreciate this. I really want to thank others who opened both their hearts and their wallets to us, and to encourage others to remain ambassadors to this amazing program.” The freshman class of honorees raised a collective $137,861 for Make-A-Wish®. In addition to Smith-Salzman, honorees who raised more than $6,000 included: Lana Lamkin, $8,000; Heather Lutz, $8,500; Helen Hollifield, $8,750; Brandi Parker, $12,287; and Leigha Smith, $12,515. TIME FOR REFLECTION Celebrate All You Have Accomplished In 2013

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | December 2013 28

hances are you started 2013 with at least a hope for the year. Maybe you went as far as to set some goals. And while this month will be busy with celebrations of all types, it is important for you to take a little time to celebrate what you have learned and experienced this year. Consider the challenges you faced and how you overcame them, and determine how you want to use this information moving forward. But before we talk reflection, let’s go over some ground rules. Oftentimes, the idea of looking back makes us uncomfortable because we feel that if our expectations don’t match our outcomes, then we have failed. But we cannot always predict how things will go or what curveballs might come our way. Instead of having a black and white attitude about success and failure, approach this exercise with a real sense of curiosity and a willingness to look at the insights as an opportunity to grow and not judge. Finally, don’t be stingy about celebrating your accomplishments. Too often, we deny ourselves the opportunity to take pleasure in the ways that we are growing and consciously coming closer to who and how we want to be in the world.

Ready to get started? Set aside a little time. Grab some paper and a pen. Settle into a quiet place with a nice patch of light and something to drink, and begin. Consider. What were you thinking and feeling at the beginning of this year? What did you most want out of 2013? Why did you want those things? What did 2013 bring you? What did you bring to this year? Let go. What were the hardest moments from this year? How did they impact you? How did those things help you to grow? How did you meet those things? How did they leave you? How did you leave them? Celebrate. What were your favorite moments from this year? What images will stay with you from this year? What are some of the most powerful lessons you learned? In what moments were you your best self this year? Honor. What do you need to do to say goodbye to this year and all that it offered you? Who do you need to thank? What boundaries do you need to define or redefine? What more do you need to say or do? What closure is still needed?

Recalibrate. What have you learned about yourself this year? What did you learn about the world this year? How are you different from who you were at the beginning of this year? What are you most grateful for having experienced or learned? Too often, we resist really mining our experiences and gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves. Selfawareness is a powerful tool that opens us up to growing and getting really comfortable with ourselves and real about the way we want to be in the world. By rediscovering our essence and integrating our life with what we know to be true about ourselves, we become more of the person we wish to be. The joy of life is that it is rooted in journey. When we put our focus on the journey itself, rather than the destination, we set ourselves up to enjoy — or at least, learn from — every step. And when we act in that way, we keep ourselves from stagnating. We make every year essential and vital. [TCW] Rosie Molinary is an author, speaker and educator who empowers others to be intentional. Perfect Gift

t makes sense that the season of gifts is one of Simone McDowell’s favorite times of year. The creator of HoneeBee Gifts considers giving presents to be an art form … and for those who consider gifting a chore or a challenge, she will handle the job, merrily. HoneeBee Gifts evolved out of McDowell’s own love of shopping and gifting. A public relations and marketing guru (she’s worked with companies such as Queens University of Charlotte and the American Heart Association), McDowell always had a flair for gift giving. In 2008, she started a blog sharing her gift ideas and inspiration, and before long it evolved into a viable business. These days, McDowell provides “hands free” shopping experiences for clients, from helping select the proper present, to picking it up, wrapping it elegantly, and delivering it. She offers gift consulting, event hosting and speaking engagements. In addition to individuals, she has worked with the Southern Women’s Show and the Carolina Panthers, to name a few. Just in time for the holidays, McDowell shares her tips for giving the perfect present:

Q: What inspired you to create HoneeBee Gifts? A: I have always had a love for shopping, and I found myself always giving gift ideas to friends and family. I started blogging in 2008 as a way to organize my gift ideas. The blog was, and still is, a great place to house these

fun, unique gift ideas for everyone to browse at their convenience. A few years later, the blog organically turned into a business, where I began offering various services, such as personal gift shopping and gift consultations. The blog still showcases unique gift ideas and experiences, but I have added etiquette tips, gift trends/statistics, as well as a glimpse into my life and the things that inspire me.

Q: Where do you find your inspiration? A: I am constantly inspired by events I attend, boutiques I peruse, inspirational messages, flipping through magazines and simply life’s daily occurrences. If you think about it, gifts have such a lovely impact! When they arrive, happiness fills the air and there are usually smiles and hugs involved … who doesn’t want that?

Q: Is your business a seasonal one? A: I feel that gifts should be given all year round — not just on holidays or birthdays. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, but it does need to leave a lovely impression. There’s nothing wrong with a “just because” gift.

Q: Do you have a favorite holiday memory?

At Giving Properly

A: One of my favorite memories is opening presents with my family while listening to holiday music on Christmas morning. There is so much that I love about the holidays … from decorations to freshly fallen snow and holiday soirees. But seeing the smile on someone’s face as they open their present tops the list.

• Do think about the giftee when making a gift purchase.

Q: What are the components of the “perfect” gift?

A Pro’s Look

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | December 2013 44

• Don’t rush the shopping process. Take your time and do your research. • Do have a well-stocked gift closet. • Don’t give a gift that you feel ashamed to give, or would not want to receive. • Don’t stop with the gift. Pay attention to the giftwrap, boxes and bags.

A: There are various elements that come together to create the perfect gift. When choosing the gift, you must keep the giftee top of mind. Make sure the theme of the gift carries over to the packaging. Be sure to take your time while shopping, too. The perfect gift is thoughtful and well planned out. My gift tips and services help in the preparation and purchasing of the perfect gift.

Q: In your opinion, are women the best gift givers? A: I think when we think of gift giving, we

“If you think about it, gifts have such a lovely impact! When they arrive, happiness fills the air and there are usually smiles and hugs involved … who doesn’t want that?” — Simone McDowell think of women first. But ultimately, the best gift giver is the person who takes the time to pick the best gift for the giftee. Gift giving takes time, thought and, believe it or not, a bit of research. You would be very lucky to visit one store and find the perfect gift for your giftee. You must keep in mind the personality, style and other factors of the giftee. Shopping is a process! [TCW]

“Why did we choose Noda?” ell, the spot we have kind of fell into our laps. It just happened to be available when we were needing a new location. The ‘old mill’ look is exactly what we wanted. “And the foot traffic in this neighborhood is great. People walking around, walking their dogs, and riding their bikes. There are people stopping in and taking notice all the time. In the last four years we have also had photo shoots, commercials and a television show episode shot in the gym.” – Doug Brafford, Ultimate Gym

NoDa has a sense of community. “I love NoDa and am really excited that I chose this community to open my boutique. It’s ideal for promoting local talent. There is so much diversity in the people who hang out here. It has a real sense of community because everyone looks out for each other, and shares information freely. You can’t pick a better environmentally conscious community where everyone is welcome, including your pet!” – Barbara Smalls, Life Support NC

NoDa captures the passion of local artists. “When folks in Charlotte think of places they can go to hunt for local art — they come to NoDa. “Here in Ruby’s Gift, we feature the work of more than 100 all-local artisans. That means we know them personally, ask them about their techniques and inspiration, see their current pieces, and follow the 100 different creative lives and directions from which they come. We’re not just a small, local business; we’re more than 100 small, local businesses. “It’s eclectic. It’s textured. And that’s what makes NoDa great. There’s a lot of passion here — this is what our artists love doing and would be doing all the time if they could. “Handcrafted. Original. Full of independent thinkers. NoDa is where you come to feel connected to your community.” – Christine VanColt, Ruby’s Gift

Less Equals More With Seasonal Décor

The power of the wreath. “A wreath can provide powerful yet understated elegance,” Holland says. “They can adorn your front door, or hang on a special spot in your living room or dining room.”

hen many homeowners plan their approach to decorating for the holidays, they take a no-holds-barred approach, with lights, ornaments and greenery covering every available surface, from door to banister to tree to porch. Certainly, if ever a time of year was made for “going over the top,” the holidays are it. But interior designer Anita Holland says there is hope for those who want to enjoy the holidays without losing themselves in the grandeur and glitter. “For holiday decorations, I prefer ‘less is more’ for our home and my clients,” she admits. “In my opinion, there is nothing like a fresh tree with white lights, boxwood garlands, paper whites and the smell of apple cider with cinnamon sticks brewing in the kitchen.” Holland graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in interior design, and she formed Anita Holland Interiors 17 years ago. In 2001, she opened her studio in the Cedar Street Design Center. Today she specializes in traditional/transitional design in the Southeast, offering a blend of antique elements with modern style. “Regardless of the style, I think the same design principles of scale and balance apply to every aspect of the design,” Holland says. “It is my job to honor my client’s preferences and reflect them in the best manner in their home.” Holland offers simple yet striking ideas for decorating this holiday season:

Make your mantel memorable. Holland’s personal mantel features Dickens Carolers she has collected over the years. But mantels can take on any shape or theme imaginable. A wreath, combined with fresh greenery and berries is all it takes to make the mantel one of your favorite things for the holidays. Classic equals simple. A spectacular centerpiece doesn’t have to be time or cost prohibitive. Holland prefers classic centerpieces that can be pulled together in minutes. She suggests filling an antique porcelain bowl with silver balls and sprigs of holly to create an elegant, easy focal point. Pack it with personality. Holland enjoys adding personal touches to her holiday décor to help create memories that last a lifetime. This includes turning to family, friends and even pets for decorating inspiration, such as her golden retriever, Bailey (left). Last year, she created a tree specifically for one special member of her family. “We bought a 3-foot artificial tree for our 2-year-old grandson, and put it on our kitchen island,” Holland explains. “We decorated it with a variety of cookie cutters shaped like trees, stars, trains and snowflakes, to name a few. It is our grandson’s very own tree to redecorate as many times as he wants!” [TCW]

Affordable Direct Composite Resin Veneers

e before Gingers’ smil t. treatmen

Dr. Ross W. Nash Ross W. Nash, DDS is one of only 46 Accredited Fellows in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, meaning he has acquired extraordinary skills in the area of esthetic and cosmetic dentistry. Founder of the Nash Institute for Dental Learning, Dr. Nash is the epitome of “expert.” Here, he answers questions about direct composite resin veneers. In today’s economy, more people are looking for affordable ways to improve their smiles. Direct composite resin veneers can be placed for around one half of the fee of porcelain veneers because there is no laboratory cost and they can be placed in a single appointment. The final result is in the hands of the dentist who is both the clinician and the artist. Some dentists have more artistic ability than others, so the results can look different from one dental office to another. In many cases little or no tooth reduction is needed, so drilling on the teeth and numbing is often unneeded. In the case illustrated here, Ginger Herbert, Mrs. Virginia United States 2013, wanted an improvement in alignment and color of her front teeth before she was to participate in the Mrs. United States Pageant. In a single appointment and with no tooth drilling and no numbing, I placed 12 direct composite resin veneers to accomplish her goal.

How long can direct composite resin veneers last? A: Used in the proper clinical indications and with proper care, direct veneers can be expected to last many years.

What is composite resin? A: Composite resin is made of glass particles in a matrix of plastic.

Ginger’s new smile

How is the material applied to the tooth? A: The tooth is treated with a conditioner and then a strong bonding agent is applied and hardened with a bright light. Then the composite resin material in a putty form is layered and sculpted before it is hardened with a strong curing light and then shaped and polished.

HEALTHFLASH An Apple A Day & Other Wisdom

PARTIES AHEAD? Stay Calm And Strategize

here’s good news and bad when it comes to holiday weight gain. The good news: Research shows that the average American puts on only about a pound and a half between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. The bad news: Most people never shed the extra pound, according to a

report in the New England Journal of Medicine. Since the average weight gain during adulthood is about one to two pounds a year, doing the math suggests much of midlife weight gain can be chalked up to excesses of the season. No wonder eating over the holidays can be stressful. “My clients sometimes dread this time of year because it’s full

of food temptations,” says Lisa Stimmer, a Charlotte-based nutritionist and healthy lifestyle coach. People also feel pressure to eat traditional foods that may be unhealthy. “It can be tough to say ‘no.’ ”

With that said, how do you avoid the holiday weight trap when dinners and parties abound? Try these tricks: Eat something before the party. “By eating a small meal beforehand — one with protein and high-fiber vegetables — you won’t be as hungry, and therefore are less likely to overindulge,” Stimmer says. A broth-based chicken and veggie soup is a good choice. Party smart. If there’s a buffet, inspect it without your plate first, to see what’s there and to carefully decide what you really want. That way you won’t load up your plate with too much food. After you’ve made your plate, steer clear of food areas, so you don’t find yourself eating mindlessly. “Find a way to move the conversation into another room that doesn’t have food,” Stimmer advises. “When you socialize around food, you are more likely to keep snacking.”

with a piece of fruit or a bit of dark chocolate,” Stimmer recommends. But if you really want one of Aunt Joan’s special brownies, go for it … just be sure to stop at one. Or, take only half a serving of your favorite pie. Keep moving. “One of the best ways to counter those cookies, cakes and creamy dishes is to make sure to incorporate 30 minutes of physical activity into your day,” Stimmer says. Try speed walking around the mall while doing your holiday shopping. And on holidays themselves, create a new family tradition, such as taking a walk after the big meal or shooting hoops in the driveway with the kids. Be realistic. Now may not be the time to embark on a weightloss plan. Your goal: To simply maintain your weight without gaining. [TCW]

A GIFT WORTH SMILING ABOUT!

Don’t skip meals. In the countdown to New Year’s Day, it’s tempting to “save up” calories for a party or other holiday gathering — but the strategy just doesn’t work. “You’re apt to overeat, because you’re overly hungry,” Stimmer explains.

Offer healthy choices. If you are the one throwing the party, include healthy alternatives, such as fruit ambrosia or a vegetable tray and lowfat dip. And send leftovers of fattier fare home with your guests so there is nothing left to pick at, post-party. Treat yourself. “If you have a craving for something sweet, try to satisfy it

A JOYFUL NOISE Holiday Music Equals Magic

www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | December 2013 58

The Charlotte Symphony’s “Magic Of Christmas” comes to Belk Theater: Thu., Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m. Fri., Dec. 6, 8 p.m. Sat., Dec. 7, 2:30 and 8 p.m. Sun., Dec. 8, 2:30 p.m. Handel’s “Messiah” will be performed Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

o you have an activity in your life that makes you happy? Perhaps dancing, knitting or gardening fills you with joy. Me? I enjoy music. I joined the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte in 1996 just so I could sing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Learning new pieces of music gives me a sense of accomplishment, especially when they are complex. The more difficult the music, the greater the sense of accomplishment. Lucky for me, Oratorio sings many difficult pieces throughout the year. But December is different. In December, we dust off the simpler songs that most people know and love. We polish them, sing from our hearts and create a kinship with the audience bound by the warmth of tradition. The Charlotte Symphony’s “Magic Of Christmas” concert showcases peace, beauty and love, mixed with Santa and a sleigh full of fun. I can barely breathe when the Charlotte Children’s Choir sings. I get misty-eyed hearing their pure clear tones, sweet enough to make the angels smile. When the symphony plays “Sleigh Ride,” there is a horse whinny so fine that I always look for the horse. So far, one hasn’t turned up! The show sparkles with excitement, and I leave the stage feeling wonder at the beauty of the season. During my first year in Oratorio, I was eager for “Messiah” rehearsals to begin. I had sung a few movements from it, but never the

majority of the work. Most of the chorus members were well versed in the piece, so just a couple of rehearsals were scheduled. Stepping on a fast-moving train is not something I had dreamed of doing, but that’s what it felt like that first year of “Messiah” rehearsals. I spent many hours at home listening to the recording, with my eyes glued to the score. I was determined to learn it. After years of singing it, Handel’s masterpiece is now an old friend. These days, I’m a retiree and feeling my age. One day, when I’m too achy to keep up this busy rehearsal schedule, I’ll have to give up singing with Oratorio. That will be a tremendous loss in my life. Until then, I’ll cherish every Christmas season singing music that inspires hope and fills me with happiness and sheer joy. This year, when I go to the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in my black concert dress and Christmas earrings, it will be my 17th time singing the “Magic of Christmas,” and I will delight in the joy of being among performers who love music as much as I do. We are all ages — from 22-year-olds to retirees — but age differences fade as we blend our individual voices to make something larger than ourselves. We’ll strive for that glistening sound that takes us to another level. We’ll find the magic. [TCW]
