Bundaleer Forest Reserve

Bundaleer

FOREST Bundaleer Forest, just 9km south of Jamestown, has been a picnicking destination for generations of locals. Today, it is becoming increasingly well known as a place to walk and cycle.

Natural Beauty Bundaleer Forest is one of the nation’s most beautiful forests, courtesy of the vast diversity of exotic and native species planted by foresters in the 1870s in their bid to find the most suitable timber plantation tree. The forest is glorious all year round, but the most striking time to visit Bundaleer is in autumn, when the foliage of the maples, oaks, elms and poplars graduates from summer greens to hues of yellow, red, orange and lime. In winter and spring, immerse yourself in the beauty of towering trees and lush green undergrowth. In summer, the Maple Walk provides a shady haven.

Explore Heritage Buildings

Other Activities

Bundaleer, a South Australian Heritage Icon, remains rich with the heritage of its early days, with many of its buildings restored and heritage listed.

Bundaleer Forest is also ideal for orienteering, rogaining (the sport of long distance cross-country navigation), geo-caching, bird watching, horse riding and exploring flora and fauna and photography.

Visit the home of the first Conservator of Forests in South Australia, 19th century tree planting enthusiast, Scotsman John Ednie Brown. Visit Curnow’s Hut, the home of Bundaleer Forest’s first nurseryman William Curnow, who invented ‘tubestock’ using cut bamboo to nurture his seedlings.

Walking & Cycling Whether you like a gentle stroll, invigorating hike or pushing pedals you’ll find a trail that suits you.

Relax in the picturesque picnic ground surrounded by century old gums. Bring a picnic lunch. In winter, enjoy a campfire or barbecue.

The whole family will enjoy the gentle Maple Walk and the interactive Sculpture Walk. For the more adventurous try the Scenic and Conservator’s Trails which take around 1.5 hours. More walks information opposite page.

Scenic sections of the Mawson and Heysen trails traverse the forest for the more serious cycling or hiking enthusiast.

Most days you’ll see kangaroos and euros, and sometimes an echidna. Listen for kookaburras and spot a brightly coloured Mallee Ringneck.

Sporting Facilities A recreation and sporting ground (featuring a well-maintained cricket oval, newly resurfaced synthetic tennis courts and a hall for hire) is adjacent the picnic ground. A golf course takes pride of place at the northern end of the reserve.

Trail Rides in the Forest The KTM Trail Rides are held annually (in August) in the magnificent Bundaleer Forest. Riders experience open riding and ridge riding which opens up amazing views across beautiful valleys. Phone: Gerry 0427 470 007, www.find-n-trax.com.au

Conservator’s Trail 1.5 hours (4.6 km return) Rating: Moderate The Conservator’s Trail can be accessed from the picnic grounds or from the arboretum on Neindorf Road, a beautiful plantation of native gums and European species. Bundaleer produces timbers with superior structural strength, a result of the slow growth at Bundaleer (radiata pines in SA’s South-East grow three times faster). The forest’s high density timbers are widely used in the building industry for verandah and pergola posts. These structural timbers are milled locally.

If you are more of a power walker, take to the Jacka Creek Walking Trail, a 2 km linear trail that snakes along the western edge of Jamestown. The tree-lined trail is pram and wheelchair-friendly, is ideal for youngsters on pushbikes and has its own outdoor gym. Or head out to Bundaleer Forest, where you can choose to amble along the Maple Walk or step up the intensity on the Conservator’s Trail and the Scenic Trail. These trails all start from the Bundaleer Picnic Grounds. Bundaleer Forest also provides majestic tree-lined sections of the Heysen trail. This is hiking at its best, with great climbs and breathtaking views. Catch magnificent sunrises and sunsets.

Heritage Building, Caltowie

Historical

CALTOWIE During the 1860s, Caltowie became an overnight camping place for bullock teams hauling timber from the forest at Wirrabara to the Burra copper mines. Bullocks would be watered at the Yackamoorundie Creek and teamsters would have a cool drink themselves. No wonder the township was initially known as Carcowie, the Aboriginal name for ‘lizard’s water hole’. While the local pub closed for meals and drinks in 2016, comfortable airconditioned overnight accommodation in the pub is still available – call Phil Dickins on 0488 902 136. A short walk around the town will reward you with a glimpse into the town’s thriving past. Marvel at the beautiful stone homes

and buildings that remain from the early 1900s when Caltowie was home to nearly 600 residents and a host of thriving businesses including a flourmill, chaff mill, machinery manufacturer, three general stores, and two hotels. A great little playground and public toilets are convenient on the main road through Caltowie. Caltowie lays claim to being the birthplace of SA’s ‘brothers of invention’. Don and Ted Both, whose inventions of the portable iron lung and portable humidicrib saved countless lives. Learn much more about their incredible inventions at the Jamestown National Trust Museum. If you are interested in native flora, head just west of the town to the Caltowie cemetery, where indigenous species flourish.

Jamestown

THEN & NOW

Jamestown, originally inhabited by the Ngadjuri people, was first explored by Edward John Eyre and his party in 1839.

stonemasons employed in the town, and their quality workmanship has stood the test of time, with many buildings from that time still standing today.

European pastoralists settled the area around Jamestown a few years later, running sheep on large pastoral stations.

By 1881, only 10 years after initial settlement, Jamestown boasted a population of 995, making it the largest of the new towns in the north. It was seen as one of the most progressive towns thanks to tree planting and road improvements instigated by the town’s first mayor, Dr John Cockburn, in 1878.

Following the passing of the Wastelands Amendment Act (Strangways Act) in 1869, the stations were opened up for agricultural settlement, with the prime aim being to increase wheat production. The land was surveyed into 100 square mile areas, known as Hundreds, and the district’s first farmers (purchasing up to 640 acres each) arrived in time to sow their first crop in the autumn of 1871. Surveyed in the Hundred of Belalie, the township of Jamestown was named after Governor of the day, Sir James Fergusson (whose Scottish background is reflected in many of Jamestown’s street names). Agriculture in the district developed rapidly, and with Bundaleer Forest established during this time as well, a myriad of opportunities opened up for enterprising business men and women.

Rapid Early Growth As a result, Jamestown’s initial growth was extraordinary. In 1877 at the height of activity, there were more than 100

18

By the turn of the century, Jamestown’s facilities included a hospital, primary school and secondary agriculture school, a flour mill and stock selling yards. It’s no surprise that the founding fathers thought Jamestown would quickly establish itself as the capital city of the north. While that was not to be, throughout the 20th century Jamestown continued to progress, highlights being the hospital extensions and upgrades including a theatre wing, building of the medical centre and Belalie Lodge aged care facility. Construction of many of Jamestown’s sporting facilities, including the swimming pool, football & cricket oval, tennis courts, bowling green and golf course occured during this time.

Through to Today In the 21st century, progress in Jamestown has been substantial, with upgrades to the medical centre and sheep saleyards, building of a hydrotherapy pool and gymnasium, as well as a multi-million-dollar renovation to Belalie Lodge and restoration of North Bundaleer Homestead. Jamestown’s sporting community has also benefited from improved facilities, most notably the building of the town’s massive indoor sports facility, affectionately known as the ‘Big Shed’, and a new world-class bowling green. Today, Jamestown has a town population of 1700 and a district population of around 3000.

A Progressive Community Throughout its history, Jamestown has been fortunate to be the home of many progressive communityminded citizens. These people, backed by a community willing to support initiatives with donations and hard work, have ensured the town remains at the forefront of rural living Come see for yourself why Jamestown is a great place to live, work and play.

Explore Jamestown’s fascinating history while in town. Spend some time at the museum or history centre, or learn as you walk along the cemetery and mural walks.

National Trust Museum Jaemstown’s Railway Station Museum has many stories to tell, with themed rooms covering sport, home activities, and social stories. Featured are some of the people who worked toward making Jamestown what it is today: MS McLeod; Dr James Cockburn; the Gordon family; Sir Hubert Wilkins and inventors Both and Trilling. Learn about the The Emu Factory (known for its cordial, chutney and butter); the South Australia Farmers Union, a farmer co-operative formed in Jamestown in 1888 which went on to employ 1000 people in the 1970s. See 19th century farm machinery, medical equipment, railway items and machinery from Jamestown’s Flour Mill, and JJ Christie’s paintings. Resident caretaker Liz Bentley-Stevens cherishes the opportunity to help you make the most of your visit. Jamestown Mural Walk

If geneaology has brought you to Jamestown, then the local history centre is for you. Friendly volunteers will help you source information about your family members.

Murals on the walls of many Jamestown businesses tell the story of Jamestown’s early days. See Ayr St as it was in 1876, an image of the town’s first motor car, and the butcher shop which has been in the longest continuous use in Australia.

Look through heritage photos, local newspapers (from 1878 to present) and cemetery and school records. The centre has a comprehensive collection of general business and community history, including club minutes, business accounts and ledgers. If time is on your side, listen to a collection of taped reminiscences or watch an audio visual history of the local flour mill and Bundaleer Forest. Open: last Sunday in the month 1.30pm–4.30pm or by appointment 08 8664 1380or 08 8664 1099 Admission: donation Doon Tce, Jamestown

Dr John Cockburn’s Bust See the bust of Jamestown’s first mayor and doctor, Dr John Cockburn at the eastern end of Ayr St, in the centre of the annual mural festival exhibits. Dr Cockburn went on to become Premier of SA and prepared the enabling legislation in 1897 that paved the way for Federation in 1901.

A brief history of each mural has been prepared by Jamestown’s National Trust branch and can be downloaded from www.visitjamestown.com.au Ian Walker painted the mural on the eastern wall of Glasgow House to mark the town’s centenary in 1971 and repainted it in 2013. The other murals were originally painted in the early 1990s, by former Jamestown art teacher John Whitney with the help of local school students. They have been given a fresh lick of paint in recent years by local sign-writers.

A Walk in the Cemetery Take a walk through Jamestown’s wellmaintained cemetery to visit the graves of your ancestors. You’ll also find the headstones of many pioneers of Jamestown and district.
