In 2015, the coffee industry in the UK was valued at £7.9bn. There are over 20,000 coffee shops in the UK and, if the market trend continues, this number will exceed 30,000 in the next decade; the £7.9bn industry is set to become a £15bn industry. Independent cafés make up approximately 30%, with non-specialist outlets, such as McDonald's and Wetherspoon’s, entering the market, and taking a large share, the independent café faces more competition than just Starbucks. The average Brighton resident spends approximately £200 a year on coffee. Brighton has an estimated population of 277,000. You don’t need us to do the maths, but we have anyway; the estimated value of the Brighton coffee industry is a staggering £55,400,000 a year. As well as having two universities, Brighton is a tourist hotspot. Each year brings thousands of new students to the city, as well as thousands of tourists, unfamiliar with the city’s many lanes, deans, and dials. The first edition of The Independent Brighton & Hove Coffee Guide was released in 2018 and the reception from the local community has been universally positive. We’re looking to build upon this. Our plans for the 2019 edition include improving our distribution network, printing more copies of a larger and more comprehensive guide, as well as expanding our online presence.

Digital and Online Through a growing online presence, the businesses featured in The Independent Brighton & Hove Coffee Guide have not only appeared in the print version but have also received support through our social media, as well as appearing on our website. The entire guide is available digitally. There are also regular updates to our Instagram, Facebook page, and Twitter account that is quickly becoming a one-stopshop for all things coffee related in Brighton. In 2019, we’re planning on expanding the content of our website, featuring interviews with local baristas, regular articles, as well as a number of other projects. Going Forward The response to The Independent Brighton & Hove Coffee Guide 2018 was incredible, because of this we are putting all our resources into making the 2019 edition the best it can possibly be. This means more featured businesses, more articles, and a wider distribution network.

Our Mission TD Publications are in the unique position to celebrate the spirit of Brighton’s coffee industry. With over 20 years combined in the publishing world, as well as an extensive knowledge of the coffee industry, we believe we can engage with Brighton’s dedicated lovers of specialist coffee, whilst also informing those unaware of the scene of the benefits of frequenting a specialist establishment.
